Celibacy-AMatterofChurch

ST.PAULANDMARRIAGEOFBISHOPS

Mrs.F.S.,Coorow,asksfor anexplanationofthetextfrom theApocalypse,"Hethatshall overcomeshallnotbehurtby theseconddeath."

A.:Thistextisexplainedby thewriteroftheApocalypse himself.Ifyoucontinueto readthebook,youcanseeit yourself.Hesays:"Theirpart shallbeinthelakeofburning fireandbrimstone,whichisthe seconddeath."Hence,neither thistext,northosewhichIexplainedlastweek,inanyway contradicttheteachingofGod, andofHisChurch,thatthehumansoulisimmortal.

Yournextquestiondealswith thecelibacyoftheclergy,and yousaythatyouhavestudied thedifferenttexts,ofwhichyou quotequiteanumber,andyou askhowtheyprovethelawfor thecelibacyoftheclergy.

A.:Theydonot,norarethey meantto.Thecelibacyofthe clergyintheCatholicChurchis notamatterofrevealedteaching,norisitadivinelaw,that is,oneimposedbyAlmightyGod. ItisamatterofChurchdiscipline,andaChurchlaw.Therefore,itisquiteuselesstolook intheBibleforsuchalaw.It isnotthere.Theteachingof

OurLord,however,andthatof St.Paul,makesitquiteclear thattheyregardedthelifeof celibacy,whenitisembraced forsupernaturalmotives,asa higherstatethananyother state,andtheyteachthatithas manyspiritualadvantages.

Thecelibacyoftheclergyis not,therefore,adivinelaw,nor wasitrevealedthatsuchalaw shouldbeintroduced.Itisjust partofthejurisdictionofthe Church,anditisquiteinkeeping withtheGospellessons.

YouaskanexplanationofSt. Matthew,ch.19,v.12.

TheteachingofOurLordin St.Matthew,ch.19,v.12,is simplythattherearesomewho areincapacitatedformarriage bynaturalcauses,thereare otherswhoareincapacitatedby theactionofman,andfinally, therearesomewhoforspiritual motives,renouncetheirrightto marriage.Wemustnottake thewordsofOurLordliterally. Besupposesustohavecommon sense.Hedoesnotadvocate self-mutilation,whichisforbiddenbytheBibleandbythe naturallaw.

Againyouaskforanexplanationofthetext:"Itbehovesa bishoptobeblameless,thehusbandofonewife,sober,prudent, ofgoodbehaviour."(1.Tim.,ch. 3,v.2.)

WhenSt.PaultellsTimothyto choosefortheministry,"menof onewife,"hemeans,asallcommentatorsoftheBible,Catholic andnon-Catholic,agree,notthat suchmenmustbemarried(for St.Paulhimselfwasnotmarried),buttheymustbesnenwho havenotmarriedmorethanonce. TheChurch,ofcourse,inthose days,hadnotthoughtofintroducingthelawofcelibacy.

Ihaveansweredyourquestions aboutcallingpriestsbythetitle ofFather,andalsoyourquestionabouttheobservanceofthe SundayinsteadoftheSabbath.

Youmustnotimaginethatall Christ'steachingiswrittendown intheScripture.Thereisno foundationforsuchanideainthe Scriptures.OurLorddidnot ordertheApostlestowritebut toteach.Hedidnotorderthe peopletoread,buttolistenand toobeyandbelievewhatthey weretaught.ThusSt.Paul:2 Thess.2,15,writes:"Holdfast tothetraditonswhichyouhave beentaught,whetherbyour word,orbyletter.Andagain, I.Cor.II.,2:"HoldfastthetraditionsasIhavedeliveredthem toyou."

WhyNotWomen Priests?

"Wehavewomensaintsand numerousnunsofvariousOr. ders, yettheymusthavea malepriesttocelebrateMass, HolySistersministertothe poorandneedy, butapriest ONLYcanadministerHoly Unctionorhearconfessions."

A.:Ifailtoseehowthefacts youbringforwardareanargumentforwomenpriests.AsI suggestedamomentago,itisreservedtoChristtodetermine whoshallexercisepriestlyfunctions.SinceHedecidedthat thesefunctionsweretobereservedtomen,Hemusthave hadgoodreasonsforHisdecision.Wecanspeculateasto whatthosereasonsare,butwe mustadmitthatHedidnottell usHisreasons.Onething whichisclearisthattheview
