"Student,"Crawley,writes:
"IdonotbelievethatEvewas formedfromtheribofAdam, anymorethanIbelievethat Athenesprangreadyarmed fromthebrowofZeus."
Answer:TheScienceofTheologyhasestablishedthatthe Bibleis.thewordofGod,and knowledgeofthatsciencesaves usfrommakingtheratherelementarymistakewhichyouhave made-thatoftreatingtheBible asonewouldtreatbooksof paganmythology.WhenIread thatAthenesprangready-armed fromthebrowofZeus,Iknow thatthestatementisjustapagan myth,asindeeddidalltheeducatedpagans.But,whenJread intheBiblethatGodformed Eve'sbodyfromaribofAdam, IknowthatIamreadingthe Bible,andthatthisstatement containsatruthwhichcomes fromGod. Ithereforesetabout totrytofindoutjustwhatis meantinthetextandcontext.I examinethepassagecritically, readwhatsomeoftherecognisedcommentators,someofthe greatestscholarstheworldhas known,havesaidonthesubject, and,whenIhavefoundoutwhat exactlyismeantinthetext,then Ibelieve,ontheauthorityof God,whoseworditis. IrememberthatBiblicalinterpretationisaverydifficultthing,and thatwemustfollowtheprincipleswhichscholarshavelaid down.Theytellus,anditis obvious,thatthetruthsinthe Scripturemaybeconveyedby anysuitableliteraryform,prose orpoetry,historyorparable. ChristOurLordmadeuseof manyparables,i.e.,smallstories inventedtoteachaparticular lesson.Healsousedinnumerablefiguresofspeech:"Iamthe GoodShepherd..""Iamthe trueVine,"etc.Similarly,in theOldTestament,figuresof speechabound.Ifwewantto knowthetruthtaughtinaparticularpassage,wemusttryto discoverwhetherthepassageis simplehistory,orratheraparable.Whenwecometoparticularstatements,wehaveto decidewhetherthelanguageis figurativeornot.Then,wecan doourbesttodiscoverwhatis themeaningofthepassage.At thisdistance,itmaybe,attimes, difficulttoknowinsomepassagesoftheOldTestamentwhat issimplehistoryandwhatis

Thatisasillymistakewhich getsusnowhere. WithregardtoEve,youstoutlystatethatyounomorebelieve thatshewasformedfromAdam's ribthanyoubelievethatAthene sprangfromthebrowofZeus. MayIaskwhy? Anyonewho believesinanomnipotentGod wouldnotdenyforaninstant thatGodcould,ifforHisown reasonsHesodesired,have broughtherintoexistencein thatmanner.Thereisnothing contradictoryinit.But,perhapsyourefusetobelieveitbecauseyouthinkthatitissilly. Againwhy?Godcouldhavedone literallywhatiswritteninthe Bible,andHemayhavehadHis ownreasonsforsodoing.He wouldnotbeobligedtoaskfor ourapproval.Ourattitude,once wehaveestablishedthatthe BibleisinspiredbyGod,mustbe oneofreverence,andsuchisthe attitudeofCatholics.Webelievethatthefirstwomanwas formedfromthefirstman.We inclinestronglytobelievethat shewasformedinthemanner describedinthebookofGenesis.

ofGodtellsusthatwemust believeandbebaptised.How thencanbabiesbebaptised?
Thereisnorecordofinfant baptismintheScriptures. Answer:TheGreekwordfor baptismdoesmean,etymologically,"todipintowaterseveral times."Butitalsobearsthe meaningofwashingorpurifying. BothintheOldTestamentand intheNewTestament,theGreek wordisusedofalegalpurificationorasimplewashing,without anyideaofimmersion,stillless ofrepeatedimmersion.Thus, inSt.Mark'sGospel,ch.7,v.4, theEvangelistwritesofthePharisees,saying:"Andwhenthey comefromthemarket,unless theybewashed,theyeatnot." TheGreekwordusedfor"be washed"isthewordforbaptise, andobviouslythereisnoques-
tionofimmersion.Youhave thesameuseofthewordinSt. Luke,ch.Xi.,v.38,wherethe writertellsusthatthePharisees criticisedOurLordbecauseHe wasnotwashedbeforedinner. Again, theGreekwordisnotmisusedwhengiventhemeaningof pouringwaterontheheadofa persontobebaptised.Thecustomofbaptisingbypouring water'isveryold. When,on thefirstPentecostSunday,St. Petergavethatsplendidsermon whichyoucanreadinthesecondchapterofTheActsofthe Apostles, andwhenthreethousandpeoplewerebaptised,It looksquitecertainthatthese threethousandpeoplewerebaptisedbythepouringofwater. Suchanumbercouldhardlyhave gonedowntotheriverandbeen baptisedbyimmersion.
Yousay:
"ThewordofGodtellsusthat wemustbelieveandbebaptised.Howthencanbabies bebaptised?"
Answer:WhenOurLordsaid thatwemustbelieveandbebaptised,Hewasobviouslytalking tothosewhohavecometothe useofreason.Hecouldnot commandbabiestobelieve.But, becauseHegivesanorderto peoplewhohavecometotheuse ofreason,thatdoesnotprevent Hiswishingthatthose,whohave, notyetreachedtheuseofreason,andwhomaypossiblydie beforereachingit.shouldbe baptised,andthusbereceived intothesupernaturallifeof God'sgrace.Andsuchisthe willofChrist.InSt.John's Gospelwearetoldthateveryone,andthatincludesbabies, mustbebornagainofwaterand theHolyGhostiftheyaretoentertheKingdomofHeaven.We must,therefore,concludethatinfantsnotonlymaybebaptised, butthattheymustbebaptised. TheChurchcametothatconclusionfromthebeginning.
SABBATHCHANGEDTO SUNDAYFOREXCELLENT REASONS
Thenextquestionis:
"HowcanwekeepSundayas theSabbath,withoutdisobeyingChrist?"
A.Iamafraid,"OnlyMe," thatyoumustlearntodistinguishbetweenwhatisessential andwhatisaccidentalinanylaw. Moses,inGod'sname,orderedthe JewstoobservetheSaturday. Thelawincludestwoelements, oneessential,thatonedayin sevenshouldbededicatedtoGod; theotherceremonial,thatthe dayshouldbeSaturday.The essentialdedicationofone(layin sevenhasbeenretained.The ceremonialandaccidentalelementhasbeenchangedbythe apostles,withtheauthorityof Christ.AndChristshowed quiteclearlyandexplicitlythat HewasLordoftheSabbath, abletodoasHepleasedwith thatSabbath.NowheredoesHe reasserttheobligationofobservanceoftheSabbath.Inmarkedcontrast,theNewTestament paysspecialhonourtoSunday. ChristroseonSunday,appeared toHisApostlesonSunday,chose thefollowingSundaytoappear whenSt.Thomaswaspresent. FiftydayslaterHechoseSundaytobestowHisHolySpiriton theApostles,onPentecostSunday.ThefirstChristiansthemselvesobservedSundayfromthe verybeginning.Thistheydid forverygoodreasons.Firstly, tocommemorateandhonourthe ResurrectionofChristfromthe dead.Secondly,toimpresson themindsofthenewChristians thetransitionfromtheOldLaw totheNewLaw,andfinally,as theSaturdaymarkedtheterminationofGod'screativework,the Sundaymarkedthecompletion of.Hisredemptivework.AsI havesaid,theApostlesretained
thesubstanceofthepreceptin theOldLaw.Theychangedthe specificationofthedaytoSunday,andthatforexcellentreasons.

A.:Iamglad,"NM.,"that youareinterestedinoursession; Iamequallygladthatyouknow thatonlytheteachingofOur DivineSaviourcansavethepeopleoftheworld.Afterall,He istheCreatorandLordofusall, andifwerefusetoobeyHis teaching,theconsequenceswill followinevitably,andtheywill notbepleasant.Individuallife, familylife,andnationallifewill necessarilygowrong,unlesswe followthelawsoftheAuthorof life.
WORKOFTHERELIGIOUS ORDERS
"N.W.'s"firstquestionis: "HastheCatholicChurchan OrderofPriests,whoarenot ParishPriests?Ifshehas, whatistheirwork?"

A.:ThewordCatholicisa Greekone,andmeansliterally"throughoutthewhole,"orin oneword,"universal."Thecombination,"TheCatholicChurch," isfoundforthefirsttimeinthe letterofSt.Ignatiustothe Smyrneans,writtenaboutthe year110A.D.
NOAUTHORITATIVEVOICE ONBANKING
Thethirdquestionaskedby "N.W."is:
"IstheChurchto-dayinfavouroftheStatetakingover theBanks?"
A.:Thetakingoverofthe Banksisapoliticalandeconomic, notareligionoramoralquestion.Consequently,theChurch doesnotregarditasherbusiness tospeakauthoritativelyonthe subject.Individualsinthe Church,bothleadersandmembersoftheChurch,are,of course,entitledtotheiropinions onthematter,andmanyofthem havesaidwhattheythink.
