Howdidallthishappen?Itwas notachievedbypropagandafrom Britain,wheretheMovement wasfoundedbyBaden-Powellin 1908.Hisgeniushasledhimto selectjustthoseactivities and methodswhichappealtoboysand girlseverywhere;menandwomen ofothercountriessawhowthe Movementcapturedtheyouthof thiscountry-theywenthomeand startedBoyScoutsandGirlGuides, Somesoonfoundthemselves,to :heirsurprise,attheheadofrapidlygrowingorganisations.Thefirst country,outsideGreatBritainand theDominions,tostartBoyScouts wasChile,andSouthAmericahas developedtheMovementstrongly, Itseemedas;,hough Scouting wouldreachalllands,butthere havebeensetbacks.Germany,for instance,neverestablishedagenuineBoyScoutsMovementwhich couldberecognisedashavingthe sameprinciplesas'othercountries. geveralyearsitcarriedon,butin 1922wassuppressedinfavourof theGovernment-sponsored Pioneers.InGreecea healthyBoy ScoutAssociationwassuppressed in1939tinderthemetaxasGovernment.Herearemarkablerevival hascomeaboutwiththeaidof BritishScoutmastersandothers stationedinthecountry.Plansfor startingtheMovementweremade byexiledGreekleadersduringthe war.Scoutmastersarebeingtrained asrapidlyaspossible,buttheboys areclamouringtobecomeBoy ScoutsorWolfCubsandtheyare beingformedwhereveradultscan meettheirneeds STRIKINGSTORY.
Anevenmorestrikingstory comesfromIthly.TheJubileeYear of1926wasfullofhopeforScouting.Some10,000BoyScoutsfrom allcontinentsgatheredinROMP--theyincludedalargecontingent fromthiscountry.TheywerereceivedinaudiencebytheHoly Father,PiusRI,whoencouraged themtocontinuewiththeirtrainingasScoutsbut,aboveall,notto forgetthattheywereCatholicBoy Scouts.Alas,thefollowingyear sawthedissolutionoftheItalian BoyScoutsinfavouroftheROM.
OccasionallyoneoftheLormer Scoutmasterswouldvisitaninter. nationalJamboreeandsomaintain aslightcontact,but20yearsisa longtimeandnoonedaredhope thattheideaofScoutinghadsurvivedtwodecadesofFascisttraining.Yetthemiraclehappened.
SomeoftheScoutmastersin1926 hadsufficienthopeinthevitality
oftheMovementtostoreuptheir Troopflagsandbadges.Asthe jeerspassed,thathopemusthave .eemedadelusron.Vet,immediatelyliberationbecameafactinSicily, theoldideasbegantoputforth newlife.Itwas,forinstance,a remarkablesceneonSt.George's Day,1944,inPalermoCathedral whenCardinalLavitranohanded backtheScoutflagswhichbad beenstoredtherefor18years.
Thelandingoftheliberating forcesonthemainlandreleased thesameurgetore-startScouting, andtodaytheMovementisonce moretobefoundinallpartsof Italy.OnSt.George'sDayofthis yeartheBoyScoutsofRome broadcastovertheVaticanwireless thefollowingmessage:

Itisunhappilytruethattheworldtendsmoreandmore tseducemenfromthespiritofChrist.Anditisequally trueandequallyunhappythatmendonotperceivetheir owndrifting.Thereisaboutthissomethingoftheterrible prophecyofthelastdayswhenthethingsoftheworldshall "deceive,ifpossible,eventheelect."SoitisthattheHoly FatherinhisrecentEncyclicals,stressesandrestressesthe renewaloftheChristianlifeasthecorner-stoneofreform fortheindividualandforsociety.Inpracticethisdemand oftheHolyFathermeansthatthereissomethingwanting togoodCatholics..That"practicalCatholicity"representedbyfidelitytoprayer,attendanceatMass,andfrequent receptionoftheSacraments,needsimplementingbymental prayerandtheconsciousacquirementoftheChristianvirtues.ItispossiblefoitheCatholicreligioneventodegenerateintoamereformalismlikePharisaismundertheold Law,unlessitispromptedandsustainedbytherealspirit ofCatholicism.Onthenegativeside,Catholicsmust realisethatthedangeroftheworldforthemdoesnotlie merelyinthefactofsin.Sinisabottleplainlylabelled "poison."Themanwhodrinksfromitknowswhattoexpect Buttherealdangeroftheworld,thesubtlerpoison,:spassedoverbecauseitissoobvious.Oneistemptedtolaugh whenonehearsthetritesayngthatthedangerfromthe worldisthespiritofworldliness.
