OnSeptember22,1900,theMinister-GeneraloftheFriarsMinor receivedfromtheVicar-Apostolic ofPekingatelegramwhichread:

"TheMostReverendCraasiand Fogolla,FathersElias,TheodoriensandsevenSistershavebeen killed."Itwasthefirstsad,but glorious,newsofthemartyrdomof agreatnumberofFriars,Sister,' andTertairiesinFranciscanMissionsinChinaduringtheBoxer Rising.Inthemonthsthatfollowedmorenewscameofthehavoc wroughtintheMissions,especially intheprovincesofShansiand

Itisofinteresttonotethatmany yearsbeforePeterUNganPanwas astudentforthepriesthood,but hadtoabandontheideaowingto hisdifficultyinlearningLatin, NeverthelesstheBishop,whoheld triminhighregard,retainedhimas hissecretary,ashewasanaccomplishedChinesescholar.Thusthe humblePeterwhofailedtobecomeapriest,byhisfidelitywon amartyr'scrown.

Thebodiesofallthemartyrsof Taiyuanfuwerehorriblymutilated andthrownintoapit,whiletheir headswereexposedonthenorth gateofthecitytillthefollowing October.Whenpeacewasrestoredthespotwherethebodieswere buriedwasacquiredbytheecclertiasticalauthorities,andoverita splendidmonumentwaserected, "Thesearetheywhtohavecome outofgreattribulation,andhave washedtheirrobes,andhavemade themwhiteintheBloodofthe Lamb andGodshallwipeaway allnearsfromtheireyes"-Apoc. 8,14, 17.

Howdidallthishappen?Itwas notachievedbypropagandafrom Britain,wheretheMovement wasfoundedbyBaden-Powellin 1908.Hisgeniushasledhimto selectjustthoseactivities and methodswhichappealtoboysand girlseverywhere;menandwomen ofothercountriessawhowthe Movementcapturedtheyouthof thiscountry-theywenthomeand startedBoyScoutsandGirlGuides, Somesoonfoundthemselves,to :heirsurprise,attheheadofrapidlygrowingorganisations.Thefirst country,outsideGreatBritainand theDominions,tostartBoyScouts wasChile,andSouthAmericahas developedtheMovementstrongly, Itseemedas;,hough Scouting wouldreachalllands,butthere havebeensetbacks.Germany,for instance,neverestablishedagenuineBoyScoutsMovementwhich couldberecognisedashavingthe sameprinciplesas'othercountries. Anevenmorestrikingstory comesfromIthly.TheJubileeYear of1926wasfullofhopeforScouting.Some10,000BoyScoutsfrom allcontinentsgatheredinROMP--theyincludedalargecontingent fromthiscountry.TheywerereceivedinaudiencebytheHoly Father,PiusRI,whoencouraged themtocontinuewiththeirtrainingasScoutsbut,aboveall,notto forgetthattheywereCatholicBoy Scouts.Alas,thefollowingyear sawthedissolutionoftheItalian BoyScoutsinfavouroftheROM.

OccasionallyoneoftheLormer Scoutmasterswouldvisitaninter. nationalJamboreeandsomaintain aslightcontact,but20yearsisa longtimeandnoonedaredhope thattheideaofScoutinghadsurvivedtwodecadesofFascisttraining.Yetthemiraclehappened.

SomeoftheScoutmastersin1926 hadsufficienthopeinthevitality

oftheMovementtostoreuptheir Troopflagsandbadges.Asthe jeerspassed,thathopemusthave .eemedadelusron.Vet,immediatelyliberationbecameafactinSicily, theoldideasbegantoputforth newlife.Itwas,forinstance,a remarkablesceneonSt.George's Day,1944,inPalermoCathedral whenCardinalLavitranohanded backtheScoutflagswhichbad beenstoredtherefor18years.

Itisunhappilytruethattheworldtendsmoreandmore tseducemenfromthespiritofChrist.Anditisequally trueandequallyunhappythatmendonotperceivetheir owndrifting.Thereisaboutthissomethingoftheterrible prophecyofthelastdayswhenthethingsoftheworldshall "deceive,ifpossible,eventheelect."SoitisthattheHoly FatherinhisrecentEncyclicals,stressesandrestressesthe renewaloftheChristianlifeasthecorner-stoneofreform fortheindividualandforsociety.Inpracticethisdemand oftheHolyFathermeansthatthereissomethingwanting togoodCatholics..That"practicalCatholicity"representedbyfidelitytoprayer,attendanceatMass,andfrequent receptionoftheSacraments,needsimplementingbymental prayerandtheconsciousacquirementoftheChristianvirtues.ItispossiblefoitheCatholicreligioneventodegenerateintoamereformalismlikePharisaismundertheold Law,unlessitispromptedandsustainedbytherealspirit ofCatholicism.Onthenegativeside,Catholicsmust realisethatthedangeroftheworldforthemdoesnotlie merelyinthefactofsin.Sinisabottleplainlylabelled "poison."Themanwhodrinksfromitknowswhattoexpect Buttherealdangeroftheworld,thesubtlerpoison,:spassedoverbecauseitissoobvious.Oneistemptedtolaugh whenonehearsthetritesayngthatthedangerfromthe worldisthespiritofworldliness.

Whatvirtuallyamountstoapublicwarningtotheclergythatthey mustaltertheirattitudetothe Stateorelselosemanyofthe"privileges"whichtheynowenjoyhas beenissuedby11,Bierut,President ofPoland.

ThePresident,notoriousforhis Communistleanings,utteredthis veiledthreatinanintervewhe gavetoavoell.knownPolhill.jour. nalist,KsaweryPruszynski,which wasreportedinthedailypaper, ''Reetzpoospolita.''WarsawRadio regardedtheinterviewassufficientlymomentoustobroadcastitin full.

Inthecourseofhisremarks, BieurtattackedtheHolySee, blamingitforthe"differences" whichexistbetweentheChurch andStateinPolandandcriticising theVatican'sallegedpredelictionin favourofGermany.

Thereislittledoubtthattheinterviewwasacarefullyarrangedalfair,withthejournalist'squestions carefullycompiledbeforehand;its objectobviouslybeingtointimidate theclergyintocomparativesilence inthisandmpoiteatelectioneve iodand,takingalong-termview,to securefromthemagreatermeasureofsubserviencetowardsthe evolutionoftheintendedCommunistregimeinthecountry.

"Pre-warPolandwasanold-fashionedonecanevensayretrograde, countryasfarasherpoliticaland socialstructurewasconcerned.The warandtheliberationbrought intopowerprogressiveforcesin thePolishState.Theseelements haveintroducedseveralreforms, whichoftenonlyrepairedpast shortcomings,suchasthelandreformandthenewmarriagelaw.

"WearesincereInourendeavourstoreachagreementwiththe Church.Wehavenointerestin chasingnunsfromhospitals,orin closingdownCatholicschools,as wasdonehalfacenturyagoin France.Wehavenointerestin closingdownchurches.Onthe contrary,theGovernmentisproridingfundsforthereconstruction ofdevastatedchurches.Icanquote numerousexamplesofourgoodwill.

"Nevertheless,itisobviousthat ifdespiteallthese,thedistrustof theclergydoesnotdiminish,ifthey continuetheir'waitandsee'policy, orsupportourenemies,wemayfinallyreachtheconclusionthatno adequateconditionsyetexistinPolandforanunderstandingbetween theforcesofprogressandthe Church. State'sDesire.

"ThepositionoftheChurchin PolandisthebestproofofthedesireoftheStatesohavethebest possiblerelationswiththeChurch. Thepositionconsistsinthefirst placeofthesituationofprivate Catholicprimary,secondary,and highschools,fullyrecognisedbythe State.

"Wemustaddthat,despitethe landreform.thepropertyofthe clergy,inparticular,agricultural property,hasnotbeentouched,althoughinothercountriesChurch

ValueofStatement,

Asaresult,theclergy,onthe directinstructionsoftheBishops havetakenadecisivestandforthe ritentionofChristianprinciplesand practisesagainsttheGovernments sustainedeffortstoabolishthemin favourofmaterialisticconcepts. ThisisthestandwhichthePresident'spresentstatementisintended toundermine.

Furthermore,Governmen-directedpresscontinuestolaunchvicious attacksupontheChurch,OnerecallsthecampaignofabuseanddenigrationthathasbeendirectedagainstCardinalHlondandtheoutburstagainstCardinalGriffinwhen itbecameknownthatheistovisit Polandnextyear.

TheCatholicPresshascertainly increasedincirculationrecentily, butitcould,atmanycases,multiply itsreadingpublicten-foldifitreceiveditsrightfulpaperration. SufficetosaythattheCatholic pressinPolandisonlyashadowof itspre-warself,

TheattackontheHolySeeisas cynicalasitisuntrueBysaying thatthePopeleftPolandtoits sufferingsthePresidentismerely repeatingtheNazicalumnyata timewhentheGermanswere'trying togainPolishsupportagainstRussia,andtheWesternAllies.The Germansmetwithnosuccesson thatoccasionandtheirpropaganda wasimmediatelycounteredwith chapterandversebythePolish GovernmentinLondon.
