-Thefirstobviouspointisthat the'Archbishopwasaccusedof actiondatingfromthetimewhen YugoslaviawasunderGerman andItalianoccupation,thecrime beingthathetriedtogainindependenceforCroatia.Inother words,theArchbishophasbeen labelledacriminalfortryingto getthebestpossibledealforhis people,atthattimesuffering fierceoppressionundertwoforeigninvaders.

WhethertheArchbishopdidor didnotplayanydirectpartin seekingtoestablishindependence fortheCroatswedonotknow.

BishopRosman,ofLjublana, arefugeeintheBritishzoneof Austria,andwhowasrecently sentencedinhisabsencebyTito's judiciarytoalongtermofimprisonment,vouchesforthisarbitraryinterpretationoftheword inTito'speculiarvocabulary.

BishopRozmanhasrevealedthat duringtheoccupationthepartisansusedtorushdownfromthe hillsonthedefencelessvillages, massacringtheinhabitantsand lootingtheirproperty.Seeing this, theGermanssuppliedthe partisanswitharms.Meanwhile thevillagersbandedthemselves intoakindofHomeGuardto protecttheirhomes.TheGermans, whomthesesuicidalfrays suited, armedtheHomeGuard. BishopRozmanapprovedofthe people'sdefenceoftheirhomes againstthesavagehillinvaders andsomeofhisclergybecame chaplainstoHomeGuardunits.

Finally,thereisthequestion: "Why.ifArchbishopStepinacis suchanotoriouscriminal,did Titonotarresthimlongago?"If itissaidthatevidenceislacking.thereistheobviousretort thattheArchbishop'sconductduringtheGermanoccupationhas beenwellknownthroughoutthe countryforyears.Furthermore, itismanymonthssincetheArchbishop'sresidencewasraided,his secretaryarrestedandthe archivestakenawaybythesecretpolice.Onthatoccasion thequestionwasaskedbynewspapermen:"IstheArchbishop himselfimplicated?"TheGovernmentspokesmanhedged,answeringineffect:"Well,whatdo youthink?"Butnoactionwas taken.

Undismayed,theArchbishop foughtforjustice.Withinthe past'year,protestingagainstthe chargeof"warcriminals"the YugoslavBishopschallengedthe Alliestosendaninternationaltribunaltojudgetheaccusations publiclymadeagainstthem.They courageouslydeclaredthatsuch acommissionwouldbesoonconvincedthat,notthey,butthe Communistswerethetruecriminals.
