OnThursday,September19,the ArchbishopofBrisbanewillcelebratetheGoldenJubileeofhis ordinationtothePriesthood.The Priests,ReligiousandCatholic peopleofBrisbaneinparticular, andofQueenslandingeneral,will gathertogethertocongratulate thegreatwatchmanandtothank Godforthesplendidachievements oftheirbelovedArchbishopand topraythatmanymoreyears maybevouchsafedtohimas watcheronthetowerofGod. TheCountyofLimerickhasalwrysstoodoutasoneofthemost religiousandpatrioticcountiesof Leland.Throughitflowsthe lordlyShannonRiver.Itsgloriousmountains,itslovelydales, itsshoreswashedbytheAtlantic waves,itssacredruins-alljoin tomakeLimerickoneofthe grandestcountiesinIreland. Limerickcityisknownas"The CityoftheViolatedTreaty."made bytheBritishandwhichwas brokenbeforetheinkonitwas dry.Ithasanoutstanding statueofGeneralSarsfield,the greatfightingpatriot.Ithas placedinaprominentposition thetreatystone.Limerickis famousforitspatriotsandmartyrs.Itisfamousalsoforthe magnificentFaithofitspeople. OrmylastvisittoLimerick,a fewyearsago,Iattendedthe ChurchoftheRedemptorist Fathers,whereisestablishedthe chiefbranchofSodalityofthe
12.000menmembers.Everynight, exceptSaturday,2,000mengather inthatchurchfordevotions,sermonandBenediction.Iwent onenightandfoundthe churchcrowdedandagoodFather givingalectureonthemiracles ofLourdes.Iwrotetohimnext day,andtoldhimthatIhadvisistedLourdesonthreeoccasions overtheyears.Itdidproduce miracles,Iwrote,but hadnomitt acleofgraceandtriumphof Faithequaltothatofhischurch inwhicheverynight2,000CatholicmenassembledtoglorifyGod.
'Itwasinthemidstofallthis grandpatriotismandgreatfaith thatJamesDuhigwasborn.

JamesDuhig,withhisparents andfamily.canoetoBrisbane whenhewasquiteyoungwell ONersixtyyearsago.Hebecame apupilatSt.Joseph'sCollege,recentlyestablishedbytheChristianBrothersatGregoryTerrace. Herehecameundertheinfluence ofBrotherJosephMullens,oneof themostdistinguishedBrothers whohasevertaughtinAustralia.
YoungDuhighadamostsuectssfulschoolcareer.Hiszeal forlearning,andhisoutstanding ability,placedhimattheheadof everyclass.Itwasprithablydue totheinstructions,pietyandexampleofBrotherMullensthatthe seedofavocationtothePriesthoodwassowninYoungDuhig's heart.
It,therefore,wasnosurprise tohisteachersandhisfellow pupilswhenheannouncedthathe haddecidedtoacceptthecallof theGreatMastertoleaveall thingsandfollowonlyHim.
ThethenArchbishopofBrisbanedecidedtosendyoungDuhig toRometostudyforthePriesthood.Thatbroughtgreatjoyto hisheart,ashelongedtoseethe EternalCity,wherePeterhadestablishedthecentreoftheChurch fortheworld.
Hereadadistinguishedcourse andagainbyhiszealandability gainedmanydistinctions.

Therearemanygreatmountains offamewhichmenseektoascend.Someseekthepinnacleof Science;somethatofLaw;some thatofSurgery.Othersseekto climbthemountainofMilitary greatnessorStatesmanshipor Kingship.ButthereisonepinnaclethattranscendsalloftheseitisthepinnacleoftheCatholic Priesthood-wherehewhogains thesummitismadeapartakerof theEternalpriesthoodofChristaCoadjutorofGod.
OnSeptember19,1896-fifty yearsago-JamesDuhigsethis footonthatpinnacle,sohigh aboveallothersummits,thatit islostinthemistsofHeavenitself. He,thatday,becamea priestofGod-anAmbassadorof HolyFamily,andwhichhasChrist.Andhisheartwasfullof
joyandgratitudetoGodwho hadledhimtothesummitof thatmountain.
Itisthatdaywhichwewill commemorateonThursday,September19-theGoldenJubileethefiftiethanniversaryofhisbecomingawatchmanonthetower ofGod.Nextday,withgreat joy.hecelebratedhisfirstMass inoneofthefamousshrinesof theEternalCityandagainrededicatedhimselftotheserviceof theGreatHighPriest.
ItwasadelighttohimtorevisitLimerickandcelebrateMass amongsthisownfriendsandrelatives.HereturnedtoBrisbane andwassoonengrossedinthe workoftheArchdiocese.He tookupthatworkwithgreatenthusiasm.Hebecamenotedfor hisdiscourses.HeinterestedhimselfinthewelfareofCatholic youth.HewasappointedassistantatIpswich,wherehiszealhad amplescope.

TothegeneralpublictheappointmentofFatherDuhigas BishopofRockhamptoncameas asurprise.Afteronlyeight YearsintheSacredMinistry-and notevenaParishPriest-hewas elevatedtotheEpiscopacy.But tothosewhoknewhim,thisapiiointmentwasnosurprise.He hadprovedhimselfarealwatchmanonthetoweroftheLord, andwaswellfittedtotakecharge oftheFortressofGod.Hewas consecratedintheRockhampton CathedralonDecember10.1905.
HisworkasBishopofRockhamptonwascharacterisedbythe samezealthathehadshownas asimplecurate.Hetravelled overthisvastdioceseandthere learnedthatcontemptofdistances,whichhascharacterisedhim eversince.HisworkinRockhamptonwassooutstandingthat onFebruary26,1912,hewasappointedCoadjutorArchbishopof Brisbane,withtherightofsuccessiontoArchbishopDunn,then failinginhealth.
ThoughIamanativeofBallarat,abeautifulcity,Ihave knownBrisbaneforoverforty years.IknewitbeforeArchbishopDuhigcametoruleit.'I knowitto-day.Whatatransformation-especiallyfromtheCatholicpointofview-andalldue tohiszealandenergyandhis greatfaithandtrustinGod.Brisbanehasmanycharms.Itsdelightfulsituation;itsglorious beachesatSandgateandRedcliffe;itsinvigoratingclimate,all makeanappealtothevisitor. Butitschiefcharmisitspeople. Theirhospitality,theircharming manners;theirloveoffreedom; theircalmoutlookonlife,alljoin tomakeBrisbane.InBrisbane onefeelsathome.Thereisa spiritofbrotherlyloveabroad. Anabsenceofnarrowbigotry.In itsfineshopsthereiscourtesy,In itshotelshospitality;initspublic service,cordialco-operation.There isanabsenceofanysnobbishness. Thereisnomadrush.Itisa beautifulcitywithadelightful peoplewithacommonsenseoutlookonlife.
CatholicBrisbane. Possiblythesequalitiesinits citizensareconducivetothe growthofFaithandUnionwith God.TheCatholicsofBrisbane areamongstthebestinAustralia. Thelastcensusshowedanincreaseof16percent.inQueensland,thehighestofanyState.I wouldplaceSt.Stephen'sCathedral,Brisbane,asthemostfrequentedchurchinAustraliaafter St.FrancisinMelbourne:Iknow ofnochurchwherethereissuch anoutpouringofgraceasSt.Stephen's. Iventuretosaythat thewonderfulincreaseintheBrisbaneCatholicpeopleismainly duetothezealofArchbishop Duhig.
OnhisreturntoBrisbanefrom Rockhampton,hesettoworkto advancetheChurchineveryway. Hehasspentover£40,000onimprovementstotheCathedral. Whenhetookchargetherewere veryfewparishesandonlyone CommunityofteachingSistersthegreatOrderoftheSistersof Mercywhohavedone,andare still'doing,suchfinework throughoutQueensland.
ArchbishopDuhighastrebled thenumberofdiocesanpriests andhasintroducedseveralOrders ofPriestswhenbeforetherewas notone.TheseincludetheJesuits,Redemptorists,theMarist Fathers,theCarmelites,theSacredHeartFathers,theVincentians,theFranciscans,theSodetyoftheDivineWordCapuchinFathers;allofwhichare helpingsomuchinthespiritual lifeofthepepple.

Thesewordsfittinglydescribe oneoftheArchbishop'striumphs, hiseffortsforCatholicEducation. WithZachariashesaid:"Iwill ternmyhandtothelittleones." (As.,13,7.'Helookedafterthe lambsofhisflockandtookthem tohisbosom.Seeingtheneeds ofhisgreatArchdiocese,he broughtinnewOrdersofteachers. TheseweretheGoodSamaritan Sisters,theSistersofSt.Joseph, theSistersofOurLadyHelpof Christians,theReligiousofthe SacredHeart,SistersofOurLady oftheSacredHeart,UrsulineSisters,SistersofCharity,PresentationSisters,BrigidineSisters,MissionaryFranciscanSisters,Sisters oftheGoodShepherd,Franciscan MissionariesofMary,Missionary SistersoftheHolyGhost.
AlltheseOrderscarryonthe splendidworkofCatholiceducation.TheMaristBrotherswere broughttoBrisbanebytheArchbishop,andhavethreesplendid schoolsandcolleges.TheSisters ofMercy,whocamefromDublin in1861,havebornetheheatand burdenoftheyears,andarestill thelargestOrderintheArchdiocesewith27conventsandschools andover500Sisters.AllHallows' Collegestandsoutamongstthe educationalinstitutionsofBrisbane.NudgeeCollege,conducted bytheChristianBrothers,islookedonasoneofthefinestboys' schoolsinAustralia.IthasproducedmanyofthegreatestCatholicpublicmeninQueensland.
Thenewjuniorcollegeonthe bendofthebeautifulBrisbane River,atIndooropilly,isanarchitecturalgem.
TheChristianBrothershave otherfineschools-St.James,in thecity;St.Laurence,SouthBrisbane:AlbionHeights,Ipswich, MaryboroughandGympie.
Oneofthetriumphsofthe Archbishopistheestablishment ofthePiusXII.Seminaryforthe educationofpriestsforQueensland.Togetherwiththeother BishopsoftheProvince,thegreat undertakingwascommenceda fewyearsago.Dr.Duhigprovidedthesite,whichinhiswisdomheboughtyearsagoatBan. yo.Thebuildingisbothhandsomeanduseful,withaunique chapel.Thecollegehasreached itsfullobjectiveandyoungmen aretakenfromthe'preparatory stagesinseculareducationright throughtoordination-asplendidtriumphfortheChurchin Queensland.
Besidestheseinstitutionsthere isinBrisbanetheCollegeofSt. Leoforyoungmenattendingthe University;theSeminaryofthe MaristFathersatOxley,andrecentlyestablished,aSeminaryat MarburgfortheSocietyofthe DivineWord.
Thereare81parishesinthedioceseofBrisbane.Itissafeto saythatDr.Duhighasestablishednolessthan60oftheseduring his34yearsatBrisbane.Many finebuildings-churches,monasteriesandconvents,aswellas schools-havebeenbuiltinthose years.Oneoftheoutstanding accomplishmentsoftheArchbishopwashiseffortsforthenew CathedraloftheHolyName.The yeartheplanswereproducedthe BritishArchitecturalSocietyvoteditthebesteffortintheEmpire forthatyear.Onehopesthat HisGracewilllivelongenoughto seehiscathedralcompleted.If hedoesnot,itwillbecompleted oneday,andwillstandasagloriousmonumenttoGodandafittingmemorialtothegreatArchbishop.

Theracialproblemisimportant, the64-year-oldArchbishopsaid. Iambutoneofmanywho havenotceasedtoregretthequirk offortunewhichturnedProfessor Murdochfromthemostdelightful essayistinthecountryintoatwopennyencyclopaedist.For,once embarkedontheperilousbusiness ofansweringtheproblemsofthe nationandresolvingcosmicdiffi.culties,itisfairlyclearthatthe Professorcontractsamoralobligationforthetruthofhisanswers. Hedoesnotprofesstobeinfallible,buthisliteraryeminence doestendtosurroundhimwith somesuchaurainthepopular mind.Itis,however,thekindof taskuponwhichtheCatholic Churchwouldnotventure.It confinesitselftomattersoffaith andmorals,i.e.,questionswithin itscompetencewhichmayberesolvedbyreasonworkingonRevelation.
QuiterecentlytheProfessorwas answeringariddleastowhyCommunismcannotbediscussedin anycircleorinthehomewithout everyonegettingbitterandbadtempered.Theobviousanswer itseemstome,isthatCommunismcanbe,andisfrequentlydiscusseddispassionately.TheclassicexampleisPopePiusXI'sencyclical,"DiviniRedemptoris." Papaldocumentsarenotconspicuousfordisplaysofpassion.Of course,itisalsotrue,thatdiscussionsofCommunismoftenenough dotendtofraynervesandtempers,andthisisduetotheemotivecontentofthethingitself.It isnoteasytositquietlybywhile someonecalmlyproposestodestroyoursocialandpoliticalinstitutions,therighttoownabit oflandoranythingelse,thesacrednessandprivacyofmarriage andfamilylife,freedomof thoughtandworship.andexpression,etc.-allthistobebrought
aboutbybloodyrevolution.It islikewisetruethatwedon'toften hearCommunismdiscussedso frankly,foritsexponentsdonot greatlyvaluehonestyexceptto suittheirownends.
ProfessorMurdochansweredthe querybyinvokingtheaneology ofreligiousdiscussion,andindoingsothrewinagratuitoussneer attheAgeofFaith-"itwasreal lytheagewhenmenweresoun sureoftheirfaiththattheyhad toflyintoatemperwhenanyone wantedtodiscussit;theironly argumentswerethefaggotand thestake."To-day,hebelieves, religionhasceasedtoexciteviolentpassions.Nowthegeneral lineoftheseanswersismostunsatisfactory.ForonethingProfessorMurdochentirelyoverlooks theenormousprovocativenature ofthedenialinbothinstances, heresyandCommunism.Upto apointhisanalogyisagoodone, buthemissedoutontheessential factthatCommunismhasprovokedanotherandthegreatestreligiousstrife.Thebasicelementof itsdoctrine-atheism-4stheroot causeofthemodernconflict.Like theheresiesintheAgesofFaith, Communismrepresentsadeadly threattoman'sprimaryrightto worshipandservehisCreator,and inconsequenceitimperilsalso hisphysicallibertyandgood.For man,whoisabody-soul,cannot sufferinonerespectwithoutexperiencingreactionsintheother.
ProfessorMurdoch'sstrictures ontheAgesofFaitharesadly superficial.Onecannotcomeat anyexplanationofthehatredof heresyoritspunishmentbythe Inquisitionwithoutaknowledge oftheorganicstructureoftheCatholicsocietyofthosetimes.In theAgesofFaithlifewasnot artificially"departmentalised"as itisto-day.Religionwasnot justanother"extra"tackedonto life.Itwastheverystuffof civilisationwhichintegrated,explainedandstimulatedotherhu
manactivities.Itwasthechief formativeelementoftheGuild structure,oftheartisticspontaneity,ofthelegalsystem,ofsocialinstitutionsandoflearning. Likewiseitwasthewarpand woofoftheEuropeanconceptof civilgovernment.Menrecognisedthatallpower,includingthat ofthepolitician,derivedfrom Godandmustbeexercisedwithin theframeworkofHislaws.In suchatheocentricsystemheresy wasablownotonlyatreligion butattheverycentralideaof civilgovernment.Henceitwas judgedbytheChurchinitssupernaturalaspectassinandpunishedbytheStateinitssubversive aspectastreason.Moreover,it waspunishedinaccordancewith thepunitivenotionsofthetime, whichwereofapproximatelyless savagerythantheEnglishpenal codeofthe16th..17th.,and18th. centuries.
WhenProfessorMurdochclaims that"religionhasceasedtoexcite violentpassions,"onesuspects thathemeansthatreligionhas ceasedtobeavitalworldinfluence.Oneonlylacksthedesire tofightforsomethingsupremely goodbecauseofdoubtorindifference.Buttheverycontraryis Trueto-day. Menfoughtwith supremegallantryfortheirFaith intherecentCivilWarinSpain. Mendiedwithheroicpassivity :ortheirreligioninMexicounder Calles.Theydieto-dayinYugoslavia,Poland,andelsewhere withintheRussian"ironcurtain."
Menmayhaveceasedtodiscuss religionpassionately,butthey havenotceasedtryingtoextirpateitwithabrutalityofwhich theInquisitionwouldbeashamed. AndiftheProfessorhadreadany Russianliteraturewhentheir anti-Godcampaignwasinfull blast,hemightevenreconsider theabilityofmodernmantodis:ussChristianitywith"sweetreasonableness."
TEMPERANCEAND PROHIBITION
Theannualconferenceofthe IndependentOrderofRechabites washeldrecentlyinClaremont. Itwouldappearthatthisorganisationtakesapoorviewofthe drinkingofalcoholicbeverages, andhassomebasisinScripture forsuchaview.Itisrecorded inthefourthbookofKingsthat theRechabites(descendedfrom Rechab,fatherofJonadab),when invitedtodrinkwineanswered: "Wewillnotdrinkwine,because Tonadab,thesonofRechab,our father,commandedus,saying: Youshalldrinknowine,neither younoryourchildrenforever: Neithershallyebuildhouses,nor sowseed,norplantvineyards,nor haveany,butyoushalldwellin tentsallyourdays,thatyoumay livemanydaysuponthefaceof theearth,inwhichyouare strangers"Itwasevidentlythe beliefoftheRechabitesthatsettledlifewithitsformsofcivilisationledtoapostasyfromthe Jewishreligion.Ican'ttellfrom pressreportswhetherthemodern Orderclaimsgenealogicaldescent fromtheScripturalfolkorwhethertheyprofesstofollowtheir beliefsfromsimilarmotives.Nor canItellwhethertheyarecontenttobetotalabstainersthemselveswithoutdesiringtoinflict prohibitiononotherpeople. Butthewholebusinessiscurious,foriftheydobasetheir tenetsontheviewsoftheScripturalRechabites,itispuzzling whytheyshouldacceptoneprohibitionandnottheothers.I noticetheyhaveasmallState membership,butes-ensoifsome hundredsofpeoplebeganlivingin tentsIamsureweshouldhave heardofit.Inthesedaysofthe housingshortagewhichhascreatedanewclassof"squatters,"such aphenomenonastent-dwellers mightbeconnivedat.Butin ordinarytimesIamcertainthere wouldbesomekindofregulationsprohibitingthepermanent dwellingintents.Buttorevert totheprohibitionofwine-drinking,itisdifficulttobelievethat anyonewouldbecomeateetotaller onScripturalgrounds.Forin thisparticularmatterthereisconsiderableconflict.Somewhereor otheritisrecordedthatwinewas madetorejoicetheheartofman. AnditwasSt.Paulwhoadvised Timothytotakealittlewinefor hisstomach'ssake.Inthisconnectionitisinterestingtonote thattheprohibitionistsholdthat "little"istheoperativeword, whileChristiansclaimitistobe foundintheword"wine."
Howeveritmaybe,itiscertainthattheaveragedrinkercan elicitquiteasmuchconsolation fromHolyWritascantheprohibitionist.Again,iftheRechabitesaremerelytotalabstainers, Ihavenoquarrelwiththem.Particularlyiftheirmotivesare Chiistian,theirabstinencebe-

Havingascertainedthemeaningofthewords"Communionof Saints,"itbehovesusfurtherto learnwhywemakethisthreefold division.Whobelongtoeachof thisgroup?Sincethebeginning ofcreation,everyrationalcreaturefindshimselfatthismoment inoneofthreedifferentstatesof existence.EveryfaithfulChristianisincludedintheChurch Militant.Forhim,sincethefall ofAdam,lifeisonecontinuous struggle.St.Paulcallsitawarfare,acontinualwarfarebetween thegoodandtheevilspirit.Surely,then,thenameiscorrectly ChosenwhenwearecalledmembersoftheChurchMilitant.
ThesecondgroupofthisCommunionofSaintsisknownasthe ChurchSuffering.Itsmembershipiscomposedofthesuffering soulsinpurgatory.Theirbattle isoverandwon,buttheirtriumphisdelayeduntiltheir woundsarehealed;until,bysuffering,theyhaveexpiatedthesins theyhavebeenguiltyof;oruntil theyhaveatonedforthepunishmentduetothem.
Thelastandhighestdivisionof theCommunionofSaintsisformedbytheblessedinheaven,and isknownastheChurchTriumphant.Notonlyistheirtimeof strifeandprobationover,butthey arealreadycrownedasconquerors withanincorruptiblecrownof indescribablebeauty.Theyare thosewhoform,asitwere,acontinual triumphal procession aroundthethroneoftheLamb, givingthanksforthegraceofvictory
Thisbond,firstofall,mustbe inthemind,intheheart,andin thesoul.Beginningwiththe ChurchTriumphant,itisquite certainthatthethoughtsofthe blessedinheavenoftengobask tothosewhomtheyleftbelow, mourningtheirgoing.Thisearth wastheirbattlefield.Itwashere theyfoughtandwontheirvictory, andherethefoundationsoftheir sanctitywerelaid.Surely,they willrememberuswhohavecome forwardtofilltheirplacesinthe ranks,tofaceandwithstandthe samefoe.Yes,surelytheytake thekeenestinterestinus,justas certainwarriorslovetoliveover againthei;battles,goingbackin theirmindsconstantlytoformer engagements,andcountingup theirdeedsofvalour,withthe marchesaccomplishedandthevictorieswon.

Inturn,thethoughtsofthe soulsinPurgatory,theChurch Suffering,mustdwellagreatdeal upontheblessedinheaven.For heavenistheirfuturehome,the objectofalltheirhopesandlongings.Wearealsotaughtthat theyfrequentlyturntheirthoughts tousbelowwhoareboundto thembysomanyties.Itmaybe bythebondofbloodandfriendship;butthereisatleastthe bondofacornmanfaithandthe self-samehopes,andalas,sometimes,thebondofourownsins whichledthemthere, Andwe,theChurchMilitant, whostillsojourninthisvaleof tearsandtemptation,turnour thoughtsandeyes,ifnotfrequent. ly,atleastattimes,towards heavenandtothesoulsinPurgatory.FornobelievingChristian canfailtothinkatleastoccasionallyofthedestinationtowards whichheishurrying.Andifthese thoughtsandaspirationsdonot cometousnaturallyandspontaneously,thentheChurchtakes caretoIssingthemtoourminds onsuchfeastsasthatofAllSaints andonthedayofCommemorationoftheHolySouls.

WhenDr.Kiernanwrotehis thesison"TheFinancialAdministrationofIreland"forhisdoctorateofphilosophy,itsoimpressed a theProfessorofPoliticalTheory asOxfordthatheadopteditas atextbookforhisstudents.
Dr.Kiernanplaysneithergolf norbridge,butpreferstospend hisleisuremomentswithhisfamily Heisgreatlyinterestedin musicandpainting.
Mrs.Kiernanhasadelightful personalityandareadywitand charm.Sheiswellknownabroad asasingeroftraditionalIrishballads.Shehasafinecontralto voice,andhasmademanyrecordings.ThosepresentattheCathedralHallandtheCelticClub weredelightedwhenMrs.Kiernanreadilyaccededtorequests forsongsafterthespeechesofwelcome.
Onedaughterstudiedmedicine inRomewhileDr.Kiernanwas attachedtotheVatican.Shegainedfirst-classhonoursandheaded theclasseveryyearofthefirst fouryears.Inherfifthandfinal yearshemarriedayoungJohannesburgminingengineer.Sheis completinghermedicalcoursein SouthAfrica.
Anotherdaughterwasrecently appointedanairhostessforthe ffri:hAirline,andisflyingregularlyontheDublin-Parisroute.
BeforethefamilyleftRome HisHolinessthePopeconferred theKnighthoodoftheOrderof St.Silvester(withplaque)onDr. Kiernan.Mrs.KiernanwasgiventheProEcclesiaetPontifice Medal,andwasmadeaDameof theHolySepulchre.

AAsyouhavestated,theCatholicReligionwascompletely stampedoutofNorway,afterthe patternfollowedinallcountries wheretheLutheranprinciplewas enforced,viz.,thatthereligionof therulermustbethereligionof thepeople.ThebraveNorwegiansheldoutaslongasitwas humanlypossible,butwiththe Catholicreligionproscribed,withoutpriests,withoutMassand withoutthesacraments,therewas littlehopeofsurvival.TheneighbouringgovernmentsofDenmark, Sweden,andtheNorthernGermanStates,allhaddecidedthat thereligionofthepeoplemustbe Lutheran;thus,throughthesein fluences,itcametopassthatthe lastsparkofCatholicismwasextinguishedinNorway.Itwas notuntil1845-just100yearsago -thatsometolerationwasgrantedinNorway.Afterthis,itwas notagainstthelawtobeaCatholic,andtherehasbeensome progressmade,butveryslowly, inthebringingtheTrueFaith backtoNorway.Thedifficulties areenormius.Thechiefbeing thedeep-seatedprejudiceofthe NorwegiansagainsttheCatholic Church.Noonecanblamethis finepeopleforthisprejudice, whichhasbeendeliberatelycreatedbythreehundredyearsofconstantcalumnyandcontempt pouredoneverything Catholic.
