WhenHaroldJ.LaskiwasProfessorofPoliticalScienceinLondonUniversityhepublishedan illuminatingbookonCommunism. Itstillremainsoneofthebest worksinEnglishinBolshevik thoughtandtactics,though,like nearlyallbooksinthetheme,it ispermeatedwithprejudiceand decidedlyone-sided-thesidein thiscasebeingtheextremeLeft. Thoughitisnottwentyyears sincethebookwaspublishedby ThorntonButterworth,Ltd.,in whichintervalbothMr.Laskiand thesubjectofhisstudieshaverisentodisturbingheightsofpower andprominence,theprinciplesso clearlyandcunninglysetforth remainthesame.

Twentyyearsagoitmusthave seemedfantastictomanytobe toldthatCommunismwouldchallengeCatholicisminitszeal anduniversality.Thesepost-war monthshaveshownthefantasy giveplacetogrimfactsasthe SupremePontiffhadforetold, WhenMr.Laskiwrotehis CommunismhegavetheJesuit OrderinparticularandtheCatholicChurchingeneralaLefthandedcompliment.Heaccepted Catholicismastheoneauthentic brandofChristianityremainingin theWorldandtheJesuitmissionaryasthehighestexpressionof itsapostoliczeal.Butwhenhe comparestheBolsheviststothe JesuitsandtheCommunist "Weltanschauung"toCatholicism wearestruckbyacertaingrotesquesimilaritywhichMarxianism inpracticebearstotheChurch, asimilaritythathasallthebathos andbelittlementofacaricature.

InthedaysbeforetheRevolutionthepeasantsofRussiawere wonttoreciteattheirgatherings thetraditionallegendscalled"The CrownoftheKingdomofBabylon"and"TheWhiteHood."The firsttoldofaworld-widesovereigntydestinedbyGodforthelandof HolyRussia."TheWhiteHood" wasthelegendtheylovedbestto repeat,anditranbrieflythus:

"IndaysofyoreConstantinethe Emperor,havingacceptedthe ChristianFaithandreceivedabsolutionfromSylvesterthePope, desiredtogivethePontiffakinglycrown.Butanangelappeared untohimandbadehimgivea crown,notofearthly,butofspirit. ualsupremacy-awhitehoodlike untoamonkishcowl.Nevertheless,theRomanChurchlaidclaim totemporalnolessthanspiritual power:whereastheangelappeareduntothePope,andcommanded himtosendthehoodtoPhilotheus,thePatriarchofConstantinople;andwhenhewouldhave retaineditthereappearedtothe Patriarchanothervision:ConstantinetheEmperorandSylvester thePopebiddinghimsendonthe hoodstillfurther,intothecountry ofRussia,toNovgorodtheGreat

NicholasBerdyaev,whowasimprisonedandexiledbytheBolsheviksforhisreligion,isoneofthe greatestauthoritiesonCommunism,sincehehashadgrimopportunitiesofstudyingits"modus operandi"atclosequarters. AproposoftheCommunistoppositiontoChristianityhehaswritten:"Althoughitissohostileto Christianityandtoreligioningeneral,Communismisutilisingthe resultsoftheChristiantrainingof

CatholicChurch,Communisinis organisedhierarchicallyonanabsolutebasis.Itscentralexecutivemightevenbecomparedto theCollegeofCardinals,sinceit exercisedalikefunctionandauthority.CommunismasMr. Laskisooftenremindsus,hasits missionfields,basedontheprincipleof"onecountryatatime." TheSpanishexperimentwasan exampleofsuchmissionaryexpansion.ItsfailureintheIberian peninsulahasbeenmorethancompensatedforbyitssuccessesbehindthe"IronCurtin."ObviouslytheCommunistsaretryinga differentmethodforthepropagationofunfaithalongtheirmission front.

Communismisamirrorheldup toCatholicism,butadistorting mirrorwhichmakesthethingit reflectsseemfitformonstrous mirth.OneofthegravestdistortionsisthatoftheChristianideal oftheuniversalBrotherhoodof Man,whichhasbeencontorted intotheCommunistComradeship oftheProletariat.Itisdoubtfulif theBolshevikswouldeverhave conceivedtheideaofuniversal brotherhoodwithouttheChristian precedent,foritwasquitealien totheolderculturesofGreece andRome,whichwereessentially aristocratic.TheCommuniststook theChristianidealofthebrotherhoodofallmenundertheFatherhoodofGod,andmadeofita toolofclass-hatred,adoctrine whichCatholicismwillalwaysoppose,sinceitdeniestheequality ofallmenbeforeGod.Christian charityembracesmorethanthe workersoftheworld.

misledbythisworldlywisdom andconfusethefanaticalzealfor socialjusticewiththeChristian thirstafterrighteousnessmust choosetoignoretheterribleexamplesofMexico,China,Spain andPoland.Itisworsethanstupidtoconfusethecaricaturewith theoriginal:itisatragicdisloyaltyinthesedifficultdayswhen CatholicismandCommunismare setoveragainsteachotherin Titanicconflict.

ReferringtotheBolshevistsMr. Laskiwrote:"Theyare,asaparty, comparabletonothingsomuchas theSocietyofJesus.Thereis,in both,thesamerigorousunyielding ,etofdogmas,thesameironrigour ofdiscipline,thesamepassionate loyaltycapableofunlimitedselfconfidence.TheJesuitwhoset forthtopreachhisfaithinChina (AtheunknownArcticNorth-West isnotdissimilartotheCommunistwhovolunteeredtoburythe infectedcorpsesinthecholera epidemic.LiketheJesuit,also. theRussianCommunisthasthe assurancethatheworksfor causethatishoundtoendintriumph Thecourageofits exponentsineverycountrywhere theyhavesoughtinfluencehas beenasremarkableasthatofthe Jesuitmissionariesinthecentury aftertheformationoftheOrder..." ThisMessianiclegendisbutone ofthemanyexpressionsofa dreamwhichhaslainatthecentre ofallRussianidealism.When Communismcameitdidbutdirect thatage-longdreamintoruthlesslypracticalchannelsintheinterestsoftheworld-widemissionof theSovietUnion.WiththerehabilitationoftheOrthodox Church,ashostileasevertoCatholicism,thisMessianismhas addeditsancientreligiousimpetus tothenewsocio-politicaldrivefor universalrecognition.TheJewish ancestryofthefounderofmodsrnCommunismhasworkedsubconsciouslyontheMessianic dreamofRussia,asecularised dream,itistrue,butdynamic enoughtocovertheearthwith nightmarerealitieswhenitsfanaticismisfurtheredbysomeof thediabolicalingenuitiesofmodernscience.

Theenthusiasmandfidelityof thosewhosufferedcrueldeathsat thehandsoftheCzaristshave beencomparedtotheholyenthusiasmofthosewhodiedinthe FlavianAmphitheatre.Forthe CommuniststheMessiashasappearedinourday,notasanIndividual,butasacollective-the divineproletariat.Thecollective, inwhichtheindividualisswamped,isdeified,andthe'"voxpopuli"becomesthe"VoxDei"ina moreabsolutesensethanChristian Democracyeverdreamtof,Communismhashaditsprophets,and someofthemhavesharedthetraditonalfaithofprophets.Ithas haditsheretics,likePaulLevi, ZinovievandTrotsky,dulyexcommunicatedandcutofffrom theCommunistfaith.Likethe

Thus,theBolshevikshaveshown themselvesadeptsatseizingopportunities.Theywerequickto seizeontheenormousadvantage whichtheChristiantraininghad giventheRussiansoul,andthe immensespiritualdynamisminherentinRussianMessianism,for thefurtheranceoftheiraims. Anditmustneverheforgotten thattheirtriumph,despiteappearances,wasmoreonthepsychologicalthantheeconomic plane,fornocausebasedona TheoryofValuecouldhaveproduced such world-shattering events,TheCatholicswhoare

AstheSupremePontiffshave predicted,Communismremains thegravestandmostpowerful forceopposingCatholicisminthis post-warworld.TheSocialist compromiseswithCommunism liketheProtestantcompromises withCatholicism,aredyingoutor aresplitinto"athousandsects warring."EvenMr.Laskihas changedhisopinionradically aboutCommunismsincehiseulogyoftwentygoldenyearsago, andhehaslatelydenouncedthe MessianismofMoscowasaworld menace,atermwhichtheRev. HenryTownsendusedoftheVaticanwhenheaddressedameeting inLondonoflate.ThemostardentsupporterofCommunismin theU.S:A.,LouisBudenz,managingeditorof"TheDailyWorker," hasreturnedtotheCatholicFaith afteranintimateinspectionof thecaricature.Andhiswords mightgivecausetothewordyand superficialtothink:"Communism andCatholicismareirreconcilable. Communism,Ihavefound,aims atestablishingatyrannyoverthe humanspirit:itisatunending conflictwithreligionandtruefreedom."Preciselybecauseitisa caricatureoftheCatholicChurch Communismisthemoreinsidious. Ithasmanyclevercamouflages wherewithtodisguiseitself,and thecleverestoftheseisCharity. AndhasnotChristwarnedHis followersthatwhenAntichristappearsasthefalseMessiasheshall besolikethetrueChristastodeceive,ifpossible,eventheelect?

Let'sbeFriendlyWith RUSSIA

TheKremlingangisbeginning togetitstruepictureinthe papersandevensome"liberals" arepeeringguardedlyatitsoutlines.Itisonlyveryearlydawn asyet,butwepredictthat,asthe repulsiveportraitismoreclearly revealed,someformer"fellowtravellers"willbeafterStalin withhatchetsandsashweights.

Forhellhathnofurylikeaninnocentsoulwhohasbeen"taken."

Weawaitwithpleasuretheserecruitstothevolunteerfirebrigade.Theyarewelcometothe hats,theaxesandthebuckets. Therearemoreconstructiveoccupationsthanwettingdownthe blazeskindledbyDictatorStalin's incendiariesofhate.TheCatholicpresshasdonemorethanits shareofthisfirepatroldutybecausenooneelseseemedmuchinterestedinthework.Assoon asweareconvinced,therefore,of thefervourandperseveranceof ournewallies,weshallmoveon withoutregrettomoreagreeable tasks,leavingtheCommunists bossestothemercyoftheerstwhile"fellow-travellers"theyhave bamboozledanddetrayed.

Thereasonforthischangeof attitudetowardthetyrantsofthe SovietUnionisalmostridiculouslysimple,DictatorStalinkicked hispublicdownstairsafewtimes toomany.Andwhenyouhave beenkickeddownstairsasufficientnumberoftimes,yourcontusionsareapttodisplaceyourillusions.

Ifweconsiderwhatthefaithful "fellow-traveller"hashadtoacceptandtheviolencedonetohis intelligenceandjudgment,there willbenomysteryabouthisbeginningrevolt.Thosewhotook asympatheticviewofStalin's 1939dealwithHitlerprotested thathewasforcedbyahostile worldintoaregrettablebutnecessarydefensivemood.Then,when theNaziarmies-grounduphalfof Poland,Stalinmovedinandplunderedtheotherhalf.Theexplanation-thathewasmerelytakingwhatbelongedtoRussiaanyhowandwasgivingthePoles"democracyinreturn"-stuckinsome "liberal"throats,butitwent down.

SovietresistancetoHitler'sinvasionofRussiadrovethehamIner-and-sicklestocktoitshighest point;butithasdeclinedsteadily sincetheendoftheshootingwar inspiteofwhatwasprobablythe mostextraordinaryeffortin'all historytopersuadethereading andradio-listeningpublicthat small-poxisgoodfortheworld's complexionandisreallyonlya littlecaseoffrecklesanyhow.

RememberthearrivalofMr. MolotovatSanFrancisco,completewithstrong-armbodyguard, thevetoschemeinhispocket? Thingsweregoingtobedifferent underUNO,buttheyhaven't been.Beforeandsince,ithas beenpossibletodobusinesswith StalinonlyonthebasisestablishedbyHitler,hisformerpartner andcollaboratorincrime-you saveyourlife,temporarily:you giveuponallotherpoints.

TheCommunistbosseshavebeen cantankerouswranglersanddouble-dealersineveryconference theyhaveentered.Theyhave beenbrutalbulliesineverycountrytheyhaveoccupiedortaken over.TheyhavelootedChina and,inspiteofpiousagreements tothecontrary,havedonetheir

besttokeepthatcountryina stateofcivilwar.Theyhave madethepeopleofthenorthern partofKorea,wheretheyarein control,sighfortherelatively goodolddaysofJapanesemisrule.

Stealingthevocabularyofdemocracy,butignoringitsspirit andsubstance,theyhavesetup fake"people'sgovernments"in PolandandintheBalkans.New reasonsareputforwarddailyfor avoidingthepromisedfreeelectionsinPolandandthestalling,in thatinstance,hasbecomesoraw thattheUnitedStatesisholding backonaloanagreementinthe hopethatatleastanappearance ofhonestymaybeforcedonthe situation.

tittheUNOSecurityCouncil meetinginNewYork,thepetulantschoolboybehaviourofMr. GromykohasearnedfortherepresentativeofthegreatUSSR thetitleof"walkingdelegate"and "DanO'Leary,junr."Atthe CouncilofForeignMinisters,in Paris,Mr.Molotovemergesfrom hiscoverofbullet-proofglassonly longenoughtodisagreewiththe proposal,whateveritis,andto predictthatallwillbefailureif Mr.Molotovdoesn'thavehisway.

Thepeculiargentlemenofthe Kremlin,inshort,haveheckled, stymiedand'scuttledeveryattemptthathasbeenmadetobring somesoreofdecentorderintoa tragicallydisorderedworld.They likethingsthewaytheyarefor thesamereasonthatpickpockets likesaroiling,jostlingcrowd;it's goodfortheirbusiness.Noone cangetalongwiththemorlike thembecausetheyarethemselves incapableoflikinganyone.They aresuspiciousandjealousofthe strongandtheydespisetheweak. Iftheiralleged"diplomacy"is subtle,soisthediplomacyofa blackjack.Theyare,indeed,a completepainintheneckandwe aretemptedtosaythatitwould bepehectlyallrightwithusif Mr.StalinandMr.Molotovand Mr.Vishinskyandthatnotedpedestrian.Mr.Gromyko,andallthe lesserfry,wouldduckbehindtheir famous"ironcurtain"andstay there-juststaythere,chewing eachother'stailsuntiltheywent thewayoflittleSambo'stigers.

Thefactthatevensomeofthe "fellow-travellers"intheaudience areatlastgettingtiredofthe "ham"actingofthesecrudecharacters,however,givesrisetothe hopethattheircontinuedpresenceonthestagemaYresultin great,andlongdelayedbenefits totheirmostnumerousandleast consideredvictims-theRussian people.Intheirblindarrogance, theKremlinboyskeepbumping intothesceneryandknockingit over.Bitsofthebackstageterritoryarebeingrevealed-Russian territorywhichholdstentimesas manypoliticalprisonersasthere areinalltherestoftheworld.

Inthisconnection,EugeneLyons, whowasUnitedPresscorrespondentinRussiaforsixyears,makes animportantpointinaletter publishedinthe"NewYork Times,"May12. "Itisobviouslydifficult,ifnot impossible,"Mr.loonswrites,"to be'friendly'towardadictatorship anditssubjectsatthesametime. TheSovietboostersaccomplish thisfeatbyconvincingthemselves thatthesubjectsinthiscasearea despicablelotwhoneitherknow norcareaboutpoliticalliberties andactuallylikebeingterrorised.

ThusithappensthatfervidfriendshipforRussia,intheofficialMoscow-sponsoredsense,hasbecome equivalenttoderogationofthe Sovietpopulationandhigh-mindedapprovaloftheirmartrydom asnoble'sacrifices'imposedona subhumanspeciesbytheirsuperhumanmasters..

"Thecurrentforeignpoliciesof theKremlin,itstreatmentofconqueredandliberatedpopulations, thenewly'tough'Partylineofour domesticCommunistsandother factorsarerapidlyswingingAmericanopinionagainstRussia.It wouldbetragicallyunfairand politicallydisastrousifthatopinionfailedtomakeaclear-headed distinctionbetweentheSovietregimeandtheRussianpeople.The alleged'friends,'whosefriendship restsoncontempt,aredoinga'terribledisservicetoRussiansand Americansalike.Ineffect,they areloadingthepeopleofthe USSRwithresponsibilityfora systemandpoliciesofwhichthey arenottheauthorsbutthevictims."

Itreallyistimethatsome thoughtbegiventothelongsufferingpeopleofRussiaandtothe possibilityofrescuingthemfrom enslavement.Ithasbeenremarked,significantly,thatthesoldiers oftheSovietarmiesofoccupationaretheonlysoldierswhohave shownnoeagernesstogohome: wherevertheyareseemsbetterto themthanwheretheywere.

Perhapsajointexpressionby theSecurityCouncilofUNO (ComradeGromykoandComrade Langenotvoting,ofcourse),of "moralcondemnation"ofthe Stalindictatorshipwouldstart theballrolling.Followingthe precedentithadestablished,the Councilcouldthenappointacommitteetotakeevidenceonthe questionofwhetherornotthere existsintheSovietslavestatea conditionthatthreatensthepeace oftheworld.Suchaninvestigationwouldbeeversomuchmore usefulandinterestingthanthe ponderousfarcethatwasenacted fortheadvertisedpurposeofsavingtheworldfromannihilationby themassivelyarmedandsoterribleMr.Franco,who,itwasalleged,wassuspectedofharbouringa concealedatom. Wemerelyofferthisthought toMr.TrygveLie,orwhoeveris inchargeoftheCouncil'sagenda department.Wedonotintend tostandonourheaduntilthe Counciltakesthematterupand wedonotadviseanyoftheRussianpeopletodosoeither. Recentanti-Spanishpropaganda rendersthefollowinginformation, directfromSpain,veryinteresting andenlightening.Itgivestheactivitiesofaprogressivepeople, whosepeaceandcontentment seemstobetheonlycausefor alarmin"peace-loving"minds.

April 1markedtheseventhanniversaryofFranco'svictory. BeingMonday,itwaskeptin manyplacesthepreviousdm (Sunday),andsocoincidedwith thePope'sday,intheseventh yearofhiscoronation.Itwas celebratedwithgreatrejoicing throughoutthenation,inaspontaneousoutburstofenthusiasm, whichoughttohavebeenconvincingenoughevenforthosewho arehardofhearing.Thereligious celebrationstooktheformof thanksgivingforvictoryandpeace achieved,nolessthanforthepreservationfromthehorrorsofthe worldwar.Oneprovincialpaper illustratedthefrontpagewith

thepictureoftheHolyFatheron oneside,theGeneralissimoonthe other,andSt.Peter'sstatuefrom theVaticaninthecentre;underneaththisthelastwarcommunique(April1,1939)crownedwith laurels,theVaticanononeside, and"ElEscorial"ontheother.

Itwasatthisstageofhisvocationthattherichyoungmanturnedaside;hereceivedtheSupreme Call:"Come,followme."But whentheyoungmanhadheard thisword,hewentawaysad.for hehadgreatpossessions.Itis truethatnoonechoosesthisdramaticmomentnowadaystowithdrawfromthe'Altar.Butthere isalwaysthepossibilitythatthe effectofGod,whileapproachingat theCalland'agreeingwiththeir lips,mayatthesametimeturn awayinspiritandthussharein thefateoftheyoungmaninthe Gospel.VowsofPoverty,ChastityandObediencemaybecome mereemptyformulas,andthe seriousobligationsofanexalted stateoflifemayrestaslightly onyoungmindsasdothefuture caresofanarduouslifeoncarefreeadolescentshoulders.

Inordertoforestallasfaras possiblethiseventuality,the Churchhasinstitutedthesecond detailoftheceremony-theEnquiry.Evenafterthepresentationofthecandidatesbythe Archdeacon.theBishopmustsatisfyhimselfastotheirfitness.To hisquestionconcerningtheir worthinesstheArchdeaconrepliesthatasfarashumanweaknesscanascertainallareworthy oftheOffice.

TheBishopremindsthepeople oftheirdutyofrevealingany-

Priestthoughheis,thenewlyordainedcannotyetperformthe functionsofapriest;hemustreceivethepowertoexercisehis office-thepoweroverthedual BodyofChrist-theRealandthe Mystical.Hemustreceivethe powertosayMassandthepower oftheKeys.

Thefirstoftheseisconferredimmediately,when,followingapreparatoryprayerandtheinvocationoftheHolyGhost,theBishopanointsthehandsofthe priestandgivestohim,alongwith theinstruments,thepowerofconsecratingandsanctifying.Christ, weknow,appliedthisanointingto Himselfwhen,asrecordedinthe fourthchapterofSt.I,uke'sGospel,Heunfoldedthebookand readtherein:"Thespiritofthe Lordisuponme.Whereforehe hathanointedmetopreachthe gospeltothepoor."Thespirit oftheLordjustassurelydescendsoneachofthosereceiving theSacramentofOrders.They cantaketheBookofIsaiasand saywithequaltruththatthe spiritoftheLordisuponthem, thattheyhavebeenanointedto preachthegospel;thatthespirit helpstheminthisministry.It isforthemselvestoactaccordingly.

"ReceivethouthepowerofofferingsacrificetoGod,andofcelebratingMass,aswellfortheliving asforthedead,inthenameof theLord."

Thenewpriestimmediatelyproceedstotheexerciseofthis power.Everyremainingwordof theHolySacrifice,eventothe sacredwordsofConsecration,are saidinunisonbyBishopand priest.Thushavewefulfilled thewordsofChristontheoccasionofthefirstOrdination:"Do thisforacommemorationofme." Weseetheyoungpriest,bythe

SecretsoftheFatimaApparitions

OurLadyPromisedthe ConversionofRussia-

AtLaSaletteOurLadyconfidedasecrettoeachoftheshepherd children,whichtheyfirmlyrefusedtorevealexcepttotheHoly FatherhimselfanditwasacceptedandreceivedinsolemnconfidencebyPopePiusIX.asapledge oftheauthenticityoftheApparitionsofOurLadyatLaSalette. WhateverdoubtsmayhaveexistedinthemindofthePopevanished,Henceforththefullweight oftheHolySeewasgiventosupporttheauthenticityofLaSalette. Subsequently,inanswertoa question,HisHolinessdeclared:

"Youwishtoknowthesecrets ofLaSalette?Well,hereare thesecretsofLaSalette:Unless youdodenanceyoushallallperish."

AtFatimaOurLadyconveyed severalsecretstothethreechildrentowhomsheappearedin 1917,firstonJune13,thenonJuly 13. Inalatercomment,Lucydos Santos-nowtheonlysurvivorof thethreechildren-hasobserved ofthe"firstsecret":"OnJune13 theBlessedVirgindidnotexplicitlytellustokeepthosethings secret.butwefeltthatOurDivineLordwasurgingustobesilent." Infact,therewasreallyno"secret"atall.

Thechildrenwereshownthe visionofaHeartsurroundedwith thorns,andweregiventounderstandthatitwastheImmaculate HeartofMary,piercedbythesins oftheworld,pleadingforpenance andreparation-repeating,in effect,theforgottenmessageofLa Salette.

SECRETS.

ThirdPartKept.

Thesecondorrealsecretwas revealedatthethirdapparition onJuly13. Thechildrenwere forbiddentotellanyone.Itwas chieflythisrepusattotellthat createdsomuchsuspicionand troublebetweenLucyandthe sub-prefect,ArthurOliveiraSantos.Notevendisgracefulthreats ofdeathproposedbythesub-prefectcouldinduceLucytobetray hertrust, Thesamereluctancewasshown byMelanieandMaximin,thetwo childrenofLaSalette.Itwas onlytheassurancethatthePope hadtherighttoknow,andthe promiseofHisHoliness'sconfidence,thatpersuadedthosechildrenoftheirduty.Accordingly in1851theirsecretswereconveyedinsealedenvelopestotheHoly Father.

"Sacrificeyourselvesforsinners,andsayoftenespecially whenyoumakesacrifices:'Jesus, itisforloveofYou,fortheconversionofsinnersandinreparationfortheoffencescommitted againsttheImmaculateHeartof Mary.'" Thegazeofthechildrenwasdirectedintoavastseaoffirewhereinsoulsanddemonswereplunged inagonyanddespair.

LASTWAR.

ItWasForetold. Thiswastopreparethecousins andtoteachthemtoturnfor helptothatsameImmaculate Heart. -For,almostatonce,as theyturnedbacktothevisionof theDivineMother,sheturnedto themandsaidsadly:

"YouhavejustseenHell, whereendthesoulsofpoorsinners.TosavethemOurLord wishestoestablishintheworld thedevotiontomyImmaculate Heart.IfwhatItellyouis done,manysoulswillbesaved andtherewillbepeace.The war(1914-18)'drawstoanend, butifthereisnostoptotheoffendingofOurLord,underthe nextPope(PiusXI.)therewill beginanother,evenworse," OurLadywenton:

TheMethodistConferenceatWestminsterwastoldduringtheweekthattheMethodistChurchwasslowlydying. Intenyears,itwasalleged,thechurchhadlost83,000members.ThePresidentoftheConferencedeniedthespeaker'sclaims,however,andsaidthatthechurchhadbeen advancingthroughouttheworld,manyconvertshadbeen added,andnexttotheCatholicChurchthetwobiggest denominationsweretheBaptistsandtheMethodists. WhateverbethetruthOfthematter,Catholicswouldnot rejoiceifthestoryofdissolutionweretrue,unlessthereasonforthedissolutionofMethodismweretheabsorption ofitsinherentsintoCatholicism.Forthereligiousconfl;ctofourageistoberesolvedontheprimaryquestionof whetherGodbe.ItisregrettablethatMethodists,like allnon-Catholicsects,donotpossessthefulltruthofChristianity,butatleasttheyaretheists.Andwhileitisthe missionoftheCatholicChurchultimatelytoattemptto bringthemintotheunityoftheonetrueFold,abeginning maybemadeininducingthemtojoinusinacommonfront againstthehordesofmilitantgodlessness.

ThereisonestrikingnoteaboutMethodismwhichis atonceconsonantwithandcontrastingagainstCatholicism.Thatisitsconceptoftheessentialsimplicityofthe Christianwayoflife.True,mostofitstemsfromaprohibitionistattitudetowardsalcohol,nicotine,dressfashions,andgambling,whichtend:-tolenditanaspectfar frominviting.Afteralloneofthemostinsistentnotes whichChristusedinspeakingofHisChurchwasjoyjoywhichcouldbepreservedinthehearteveninthemidst ofpersecution.TheMethodistshaveundoubtedlylargely confusedthevirtueoftemperancewiththeviceofsuppression.Andiftheyarefailingto-day.theymightreasonablyinquirewhethertheyare.nottieingundulyrepressivetowardstheiryoungpeopleinthematterofpleasure. Nomaterialthingisinitselfevilithasnotthefacultyof beingeithergoodorevil.Onlythewillofmancreates evil,sothatfromtheoutlookoftheChristianlifeitismore importanttoensuredisciplineofthewillthantheabolition ofthingsuponwhichthewillislikelytoseize.

Butapartfromthisaspect,Methodism,alongwiththe listofthenon-Catholicworld,issufferingmostseriously fromtheinroadsofModernism.TheCatholicChurch, throughtheguidanceoftheHolySpiritpromisedHerto theendoftime,wasabletopurgeherownranksfrom thisdiseaseofthespiritwhenPopePiusX.issuedhis CatalogueofErrors.Butthenon-Catholicworld,lackinganauthoritativecorpusofdoctrineandlanguishingfor wantofinternaldiscipline,fellaneasyvictimtotheinsidiousattacksofModernism.Thenon-Conformistchurches wereevenmoreseriouslyhitthantheparentbody,the EstablishedChurch,becausemanyofthem,andnoteably Methodism,hadnodoctrinalbasisatall.Itmustvery soonhavebecomeapparenttotheirintellectualmembers that,infaceofthe"highercriticism,"thepositionoffundamentalismcouldnotbemaintained,Itwas,therefore, hailedasanescapebeforeitwasapprehendedasatrap. * * *

Thatthereisconfusionintheranksofnon-Conformity isamplyattestedbythefactthattheArchbishopofCanterburycouldsaytotheMethodistConference:"The ChurchofEnglandmayberegardedbyMethodistsas'a ratherfossilisedparent,'butitisstillaparent,whileMethodism,whichmaybe/regardedasaratheradolescent, waywardchild,isstillachildoftheChurchofEngland." Hepromisedtodoeverythingpossibletowardsachieving reunion."OurLorddoesnotwantustorestcontent withthepresentsituation."SimilarmovestowardsreunionarereportedfromtheUnitedStates!Thisseems toindicatethatthethinkersofnon-Conformity,having beenseducedbyModernism,thesimpleradherentsare castingaboutformorereliableleadership.Ifthereunion ofProtestantismispossible(includingtheOrthodoxchurches)itmaybenobadthing.ItmayfacilitatethemissionoftheCatholicChurchtodrawallbackintotheprimitiveunityoftruth.

Butitisanotherstorywhenwe cometobooksandplayswhich possessorpretendtosomedegree ofliteraryexcellence,Thenitis contended-persistentlyandpassionately-thatartisall,thatthe rulesofgoodliteraturetranscend thelawsofmorality.

Sometimesthiscontentioniscarriedtoitsextremeand,itmust beconfessed,logicalconclusion,as itwasbythepaladinsof"Aestheticism"inthenineteenthcentury"Decadent"periodofEnglishliterature.Theirslogan was:ArtforArt'ssake.

ThusOscarWilde,duringhis libelsuitagainsttheMarquisof Queensbery,whenaskedincrossexaminationbyEdwardCarson ifheadmittedthatacertainstory wasimmoral,replied:"Itwas worse;itwasbadlywritten." Whenaskedifhethoughtitblasphemous,hereplied:"Ithinkit violatedeverycanonofartistic beauty."Thatisanattitudeof mindinanutshell.Awriter shouldnotbelimitedinhisfreedomtosayanything,totreatof anysubjectinanyway;hisliterarycraftsmanshipisallthatmatters. Butsometimesthecontentionis notcarriedsofar.Itisnotcontendedthatmoralityhasnopart intheartofliteratureorinthe artofthetheatre;butitiscontendedthatthemoraljudgment shouldbesubordinatedtoartistic truth,thataworkwhichoffends againsttheconventionallawsof moralityisnotimmoralwhenthe authorisfaithfultohisconceptionoflifeanditsrealisticportrayal.Thiscontentionisput veryforciblybyDouglasStewart inatiltatofficialcensorship,a RedPagearticle,"TheDangerous Farce,'inarecentissueofthe Sydney"Bulletin."MightIsay' inpassingthat1amnotconcernednowwiththerightsorwrongs ofthemethodofofficialcensorship.Mr.Stewartsays:"Why,it isasked,didthegiantsofthe world'sliteraturegotoofar!"The answeris,simply,theyweretellingthetruthastheysawit;and thesentencethatshocks,the pagesthatoffend,themoment whenthewritersanalysisoflife reachesitsextreme-thatislikely tobetheabsolutelyvitalmoment ofhisbookwhenthewholetruth isrevealed.Anhonestwritercannotsacrificethatextrememomentoftruth.Ifhedoes-ifcensorshipmakeshimaliar-thefalsitywilldestroyhiswholework."

ThelatestprotesthasbeendirectedagainsttheGovernment's refusaltoallowtheCatholicpress, whichwassuppressedbythe Nazis,toresumepublication.The positionisworsenedbythefact thattheCommunistpressconsistentlyattackstheChurch,theHierarchyandtheclergy.Thatthis situationcanariseinacountry whichis70percent.Catholic showsthestrangleholdthatthe Communists,backedbyRussia, haveontheadministration.

Protestshavealsobeenmade againsttheassaultontheschools. Messagesarestillpouringinto thePremier'sofficescondemning theGovernment'sproposalto withdrawfinancialaidfromthe Church;schools.Theyalsobring tolightthefactthatCatholic schoolchildrenhavebeenforced toattendmeetingsandlecturesat whichtheChurchhasbeenattacked,AnotheraspectoftheantiCatholiccampaigntakestheform ofplaysattheState-subsidisednationaltheatreinBudapestridiculingtheChurch.

THREENUNSSENTENCED UNHEARD.

Threenunsweresentencedto death,anotherwassenttoprison for21years,75wereexiledand 241dismissedfromStateinstitutions,saysareportfromYugoslaviadetailingthepersecution againsttheSistersofCharityof St.VincentdePaul. Thenunssentencedtodeath werenotallowedanydefence. Theywerechargedwithmurdering woundedPartisansinhospital. Presscampaignsaccusethenuns ofill-treatinghospitalpatients. OnenewspaperpublishedacartoonshowingSistersofCharity murderingchildren.Threatsof violenceagainstthemhavebeen madeatpublicmeetings.

AtCollegeParkonSunday, Claremontweredefeatedbutnot disgracedbytheunbeatenHighgateteam.Thewind,blowingat almostgaleforceacrosstheoval, r.Adegoodfootballanimpossibility,andneitherteamwasable toshowitstrueform.
