WhenHaroldJ.LaskiwasProfessorofPoliticalScienceinLondonUniversityhepublishedan illuminatingbookonCommunism. Itstillremainsoneofthebest worksinEnglishinBolshevik thoughtandtactics,though,like nearlyallbooksinthetheme,it ispermeatedwithprejudiceand decidedlyone-sided-thesidein thiscasebeingtheextremeLeft. Thoughitisnottwentyyears sincethebookwaspublishedby ThorntonButterworth,Ltd.,in whichintervalbothMr.Laskiand thesubjectofhisstudieshaverisentodisturbingheightsofpower andprominence,theprinciplesso clearlyandcunninglysetforth remainthesame.
Twentyyearsagoitmusthave seemedfantastictomanytobe toldthatCommunismwouldchallengeCatholicisminitszeal anduniversality.Thesepost-war monthshaveshownthefantasy giveplacetogrimfactsasthe SupremePontiffhadforetold, WhenMr.Laskiwrotehis CommunismhegavetheJesuit OrderinparticularandtheCatholicChurchingeneralaLefthandedcompliment.Heaccepted Catholicismastheoneauthentic brandofChristianityremainingin theWorldandtheJesuitmissionaryasthehighestexpressionof itsapostoliczeal.Butwhenhe comparestheBolsheviststothe JesuitsandtheCommunist "Weltanschauung"toCatholicism wearestruckbyacertaingrotesquesimilaritywhichMarxianism inpracticebearstotheChurch, asimilaritythathasallthebathos andbelittlementofacaricature.

InthedaysbeforetheRevolutionthepeasantsofRussiawere wonttoreciteattheirgatherings thetraditionallegendscalled"The CrownoftheKingdomofBabylon"and"TheWhiteHood."The firsttoldofaworld-widesovereigntydestinedbyGodforthelandof HolyRussia."TheWhiteHood" wasthelegendtheylovedbestto repeat,anditranbrieflythus:

AproposoftheCommunistoppositiontoChristianityhehaswritten:"Althoughitissohostileto Christianityandtoreligioningeneral,Communismisutilisingthe resultsoftheChristiantrainingof
CatholicChurch,Communisinis organisedhierarchicallyonanabsolutebasis.Itscentralexecutivemightevenbecomparedto theCollegeofCardinals,sinceit exercisedalikefunctionandauthority.CommunismasMr. Laskisooftenremindsus,hasits missionfields,basedontheprincipleof"onecountryatatime." Communismisamirrorheldup toCatholicism,butadistorting mirrorwhichmakesthethingit reflectsseemfitformonstrous mirth.OneofthegravestdistortionsisthatoftheChristianideal oftheuniversalBrotherhoodof Man,whichhasbeencontorted intotheCommunistComradeship oftheProletariat.Itisdoubtfulif theBolshevikswouldeverhave conceivedtheideaofuniversal brotherhoodwithouttheChristian precedent,foritwasquitealien totheolderculturesofGreece andRome,whichwereessentially aristocratic.TheCommuniststook theChristianidealofthebrotherhoodofallmenundertheFatherhoodofGod,andmadeofita toolofclass-hatred,adoctrine whichCatholicismwillalwaysoppose,sinceitdeniestheequality ofallmenbeforeGod.Christian charityembracesmorethanthe workersoftheworld.

Communism,Ihavefound,aims atestablishingatyrannyoverthe humanspirit:itisatunending conflictwithreligionandtruefreedom."Preciselybecauseitisa caricatureoftheCatholicChurch Communismisthemoreinsidious. Ithasmanyclevercamouflages wherewithtodisguiseitself,and thecleverestoftheseisCharity. Thereasonforthischangeof attitudetowardthetyrantsofthe SovietUnionisalmostridiculouslysimple,DictatorStalinkicked hispublicdownstairsafewtimes toomany.Andwhenyouhave beenkickeddownstairsasufficientnumberoftimes,yourcontusionsareapttodisplaceyourillusions.
Ifweconsiderwhatthefaithful "fellow-traveller"hashadtoacceptandtheviolencedonetohis intelligenceandjudgment,there willbenomysteryabouthisbeginningrevolt.Thosewhotook asympatheticviewofStalin's 1939dealwithHitlerprotested thathewasforcedbyahostile worldintoaregrettablebutnecessarydefensivemood.Then,when theNaziarmies-grounduphalfof Poland,Stalinmovedinandplunderedtheotherhalf.Theexplanation-thathewasmerelytakingwhatbelongedtoRussiaanyhowandwasgivingthePoles"democracyinreturn"-stuckinsome "liberal"throats,butitwent down.
SovietresistancetoHitler'sinvasionofRussiadrovethehamIner-and-sicklestocktoitshighest point;butithasdeclinedsteadily sincetheendoftheshootingwar inspiteofwhatwasprobablythe mostextraordinaryeffortin'all historytopersuadethereading andradio-listeningpublicthat small-poxisgoodfortheworld's complexionandisreallyonlya littlecaseoffrecklesanyhow.
RememberthearrivalofMr. MolotovatSanFrancisco,completewithstrong-armbodyguard, thevetoschemeinhispocket? Thingsweregoingtobedifferent underUNO,buttheyhaven't been.Beforeandsince,ithas beenpossibletodobusinesswith StalinonlyonthebasisestablishedbyHitler,hisformerpartner andcollaboratorincrime-you saveyourlife,temporarily:you giveuponallotherpoints.
TheCommunistbosseshavebeen cantankerouswranglersanddouble-dealersineveryconference theyhaveentered.Theyhave beenbrutalbulliesineverycountrytheyhaveoccupiedortaken over.TheyhavelootedChina and,inspiteofpiousagreements tothecontrary,havedonetheir
besttokeepthatcountryina stateofcivilwar.Theyhave madethepeopleofthenorthern partofKorea,wheretheyarein control,sighfortherelatively goodolddaysofJapanesemisrule.
Stealingthevocabularyofdemocracy,butignoringitsspirit andsubstance,theyhavesetup fake"people'sgovernments"in PolandandintheBalkans.New reasonsareputforwarddailyfor avoidingthepromisedfreeelectionsinPolandandthestalling,in thatinstance,hasbecomesoraw thattheUnitedStatesisholding backonaloanagreementinthe hopethatatleastanappearance ofhonestymaybeforcedonthe situation.

Iftheiralleged"diplomacy"is subtle,soisthediplomacyofa blackjack.Theyare,indeed,a completepainintheneckandwe aretemptedtosaythatitwould bepehectlyallrightwithusif Mr.StalinandMr.Molotovand Mr.Vishinskyandthatnotedpedestrian.Mr.Gromyko,andallthe lesserfry,wouldduckbehindtheir famous"ironcurtain"andstay there-juststaythere,chewing eachother'stailsuntiltheywent thewayoflittleSambo'stigers.
Thefactthatevensomeofthe "fellow-travellers"intheaudience areatlastgettingtiredofthe "ham"actingofthesecrudecharacters,however,givesrisetothe hopethattheircontinuedpresenceonthestagemaYresultin great,andlongdelayedbenefits totheirmostnumerousandleast consideredvictims-theRussian people.Intheirblindarrogance, theKremlinboyskeepbumping intothesceneryandknockingit over.Bitsofthebackstageterritoryarebeingrevealed-Russian territorywhichholdstentimesas manypoliticalprisonersasthere areinalltherestoftheworld.
Inthisconnection,EugeneLyons, whowasUnitedPresscorrespondentinRussiaforsixyears,makes animportantpointinaletter publishedinthe"NewYork Times,"May12. "Itisobviouslydifficult,ifnot impossible,"Mr.loonswrites,"to be'friendly'towardadictatorship anditssubjectsatthesametime. TheSovietboostersaccomplish thisfeatbyconvincingthemselves thatthesubjectsinthiscasearea despicablelotwhoneitherknow norcareaboutpoliticalliberties andactuallylikebeingterrorised.
ThusithappensthatfervidfriendshipforRussia,intheofficialMoscow-sponsoredsense,hasbecome equivalenttoderogationofthe Sovietpopulationandhigh-mindedapprovaloftheirmartrydom asnoble'sacrifices'imposedona subhumanspeciesbytheirsuperhumanmasters..
"Thecurrentforeignpoliciesof theKremlin,itstreatmentofconqueredandliberatedpopulations, thenewly'tough'Partylineofour domesticCommunistsandother factorsarerapidlyswingingAmericanopinionagainstRussia.It wouldbetragicallyunfairand politicallydisastrousifthatopinionfailedtomakeaclear-headed distinctionbetweentheSovietregimeandtheRussianpeople.The alleged'friends,'whosefriendship restsoncontempt,aredoinga'terribledisservicetoRussiansand Americansalike.Ineffect,they areloadingthepeopleofthe USSRwithresponsibilityfora systemandpoliciesofwhichthey arenottheauthorsbutthevictims."
Itreallyistimethatsome thoughtbegiventothelongsufferingpeopleofRussiaandtothe possibilityofrescuingthemfrom enslavement.Ithasbeenremarked,significantly,thatthesoldiers oftheSovietarmiesofoccupationaretheonlysoldierswhohave shownnoeagernesstogohome: wherevertheyareseemsbetterto themthanwheretheywere.
Perhapsajointexpressionby theSecurityCouncilofUNO (ComradeGromykoandComrade Langenotvoting,ofcourse),of "moralcondemnation"ofthe Stalindictatorshipwouldstart theballrolling.Followingthe precedentithadestablished,the Councilcouldthenappointacommitteetotakeevidenceonthe questionofwhetherornotthere existsintheSovietslavestatea conditionthatthreatensthepeace oftheworld.Suchaninvestigationwouldbeeversomuchmore usefulandinterestingthanthe ponderousfarcethatwasenacted fortheadvertisedpurposeofsavingtheworldfromannihilationby themassivelyarmedandsoterribleMr.Franco,who,itwasalleged,wassuspectedofharbouringa concealedatom. Wemerelyofferthisthought toMr.TrygveLie,orwhoeveris inchargeoftheCouncil'sagenda department.Wedonotintend tostandonourheaduntilthe Counciltakesthematterupand wedonotadviseanyoftheRussianpeopletodosoeither. April 1markedtheseventhanniversaryofFranco'svictory. BeingMonday,itwaskeptin manyplacesthepreviousdm (Sunday),andsocoincidedwith thePope'sday,intheseventh yearofhiscoronation.Itwas celebratedwithgreatrejoicing throughoutthenation,inaspontaneousoutburstofenthusiasm, whichoughttohavebeenconvincingenoughevenforthosewho arehardofhearing.Thereligious celebrationstooktheformof thanksgivingforvictoryandpeace achieved,nolessthanforthepreservationfromthehorrorsofthe worldwar.Oneprovincialpaper illustratedthefrontpagewith

Sir,-Itwouldbewelltorealise thattheFederalGovernment,in doingthis,ismerelycarryingout thepolicyoftheLabourParty withregardsthenationalisationof land.Itisdoingsobymeansof the99-yearleasesystem,andthis systemallowsallsortsofSocialisticinterferencewiththeindividualinregardtotheworkingof theland.Theessentialcharacter ofSocialismisthatitlookstothe extensionofthefunctionsof-the Statefortheremedyofsocial evils;thatitwouldsubstituteregulationanddirectionforcompetitionandintelligentcontrolby organisedsocietyforthefreeplay ofindividualdesireandeffort,and thusforfailingtoseetheorder andsymmetryofnaturallaw,it failstorecogniseGod.Sothat thefactthattheGovernmenthas decidedtochargetheChurch ratesandtaxes,notwithstanding thatthesebuildingshavebeen builtforthepurposeofChristian worship,isonlywhatwecanexpectfromaGovernmentthat adoptsaSocialisticsystem.On theoneh;u,d,wewhowouldhave thepeopleadopttheHenry Georgesystem,wouldnothave takenthefreeholdtitlefromthe churches,norwouldwemake thempa:,ratesandtaxes,for thesebuildingsareforthepurposeofadcringGod,andsinceit wasGodthatcreatedtheland, andnotthepeopleortheirgovernment,nogovernmenthasany righttoteveethechurcheswith ratesortaxesonlandthatis beingusedforreligion,charity,or education,sincetheselandsare beingusedforthepurposeofcarryingoutGod'scommands,and whenthe,churcheshavebeentaxed,whowillhavetopaythe taxes?Itwillbethosewhogoto church.'thereforewenowhave itthatwt.areevengoingtobe taxedforgoingtochurch.Why shouldanygovernmentstoopso lowinraisingrevenueastodo thissortofthing?Theanswer tothatquestionisbecauseSocietyuptothepresenttimehasnot realisedthatthereisanaturaland rightway,thatis,awayintended byGod,forraisingofpublicrevenue,justasthereisanatural andrightwayforamantowalk onhisfeetandnotonhishands. Weknowthatwhileamanis walkingonhisfeetalltheother organsofthebodyarefreetoperformtheirproperfunctions;while ifheweretowalkonhishands alltheorganswouldbeupside downandnotfreetoperformtheir properfunctions.SowithSodety,itinsistsonrefusingandmisusingtheblessingsthatGodhas profferedtoit,withtheresultthat theyturnintoevilsthatscourge us.Weraiseourpublicrevenuesbytaxingtheproductsand processesofindustry,andevery taxwelevyviolatesthemoral

OnJuly7,bythekindnessof MotherPrioress,theHomeofthe GoodShepherdbecametheappropriatesettingforthehalf-yearly DayofRecollection.Beginning withDialogue-Mass,the"Day" wasconductedbyRev.Father Lawlor,S.J.,who,inseveralinspiringtalks,stressedthefactthat theTherrySocietyisnotjusta groupofCatholicpeoplebanded togetherfortheirownenjoyment, butamuchneededworkofapostolate,demandingfromeachofits membersacapacityforsacrifice, andtheabilitytostandstrong andtrustfullyagainsttrialand persecution,Aleisurestatewas fastapproaching,andtheneed wasincreasinglygreatformento beshownhowtospendtheirleisureinactive,fruitfulways.The Therryapostolateofentertainmentwasofvitalimportancein theworldto-day,helpingtoovercomethemoderntrendtopagan passivity,andrestoringtomen theCatholicconceptofart,even inthedoingofeverydaythings.

Inordertoforestallasfaras possiblethiseventuality,the Churchhasinstitutedthesecond detailoftheceremony-theEnquiry.Evenafterthepresentationofthecandidatesbythe Archdeacon.theBishopmustsatisfyhimselfastotheirfitness.To hisquestionconcerningtheir worthinesstheArchdeaconrepliesthatasfarashumanweaknesscanascertainallareworthy oftheOffice.
TheBishopremindsthepeople oftheirdutyofrevealingany-
Priestthoughheis,thenewlyordainedcannotyetperformthe functionsofapriest;hemustreceivethepowertoexercisehis office-thepoweroverthedual BodyofChrist-theRealandthe Mystical.Hemustreceivethe powertosayMassandthepower oftheKeys.

Thenewpriestimmediatelyproceedstotheexerciseofthis power.Everyremainingwordof theHolySacrifice,eventothe sacredwordsofConsecration,are saidinunisonbyBishopand priest.Thushavewefulfilled thewordsofChristontheoccasionofthefirstOrdination:"Do thisforacommemorationofme." Weseetheyoungpriest,bythe

AtFatimaOurLadyconveyed severalsecretstothethreechildrentowhomsheappearedin 1917,firstonJune13,thenonJuly 13. Inalatercomment,Lucydos Santos-nowtheonlysurvivorof thethreechildren-hasobserved ofthe"firstsecret":"OnJune13 theBlessedVirgindidnotexplicitlytellustokeepthosethings secret.butwefeltthatOurDivineLordwasurgingustobesilent." Infact,therewasreallyno"secret"atall.

TheMethodistConferenceatWestminsterwastoldduringtheweekthattheMethodistChurchwasslowlydying. Intenyears,itwasalleged,thechurchhadlost83,000members.ThePresidentoftheConferencedeniedthespeaker'sclaims,however,andsaidthatthechurchhadbeen advancingthroughouttheworld,manyconvertshadbeen added,andnexttotheCatholicChurchthetwobiggest denominationsweretheBaptistsandtheMethodists. WhateverbethetruthOfthematter,Catholicswouldnot rejoiceifthestoryofdissolutionweretrue,unlessthereasonforthedissolutionofMethodismweretheabsorption ofitsinherentsintoCatholicism.Forthereligiousconfl;ctofourageistoberesolvedontheprimaryquestionof whetherGodbe.ItisregrettablethatMethodists,like allnon-Catholicsects,donotpossessthefulltruthofChristianity,butatleasttheyaretheists.Andwhileitisthe missionoftheCatholicChurchultimatelytoattemptto bringthemintotheunityoftheonetrueFold,abeginning maybemadeininducingthemtojoinusinacommonfront againstthehordesofmilitantgodlessness.

ThereisonestrikingnoteaboutMethodismwhichis atonceconsonantwithandcontrastingagainstCatholicism.Thatisitsconceptoftheessentialsimplicityofthe Christianwayoflife.True,mostofitstemsfromaprohibitionistattitudetowardsalcohol,nicotine,dressfashions,andgambling,whichtend:-tolenditanaspectfar frominviting.Afteralloneofthemostinsistentnotes whichChristusedinspeakingofHisChurchwasjoyjoywhichcouldbepreservedinthehearteveninthemidst ofpersecution.TheMethodistshaveundoubtedlylargely confusedthevirtueoftemperancewiththeviceofsuppression.Andiftheyarefailingto-day.theymightreasonablyinquirewhethertheyare.nottieingundulyrepressivetowardstheiryoungpeopleinthematterofpleasure. Nomaterialthingisinitselfevilithasnotthefacultyof beingeithergoodorevil.Onlythewillofmancreates evil,sothatfromtheoutlookoftheChristianlifeitismore importanttoensuredisciplineofthewillthantheabolition ofthingsuponwhichthewillislikelytoseize.
Butapartfromthisaspect,Methodism,alongwiththe listofthenon-Catholicworld,issufferingmostseriously fromtheinroadsofModernism.TheCatholicChurch, throughtheguidanceoftheHolySpiritpromisedHerto theendoftime,wasabletopurgeherownranksfrom thisdiseaseofthespiritwhenPopePiusX.issuedhis CatalogueofErrors.Butthenon-Catholicworld,lackinganauthoritativecorpusofdoctrineandlanguishingfor wantofinternaldiscipline,fellaneasyvictimtotheinsidiousattacksofModernism.Thenon-Conformistchurches wereevenmoreseriouslyhitthantheparentbody,the EstablishedChurch,becausemanyofthem,andnoteably Methodism,hadnodoctrinalbasisatall.Itmustvery soonhavebecomeapparenttotheirintellectualmembers that,infaceofthe"highercriticism,"thepositionoffundamentalismcouldnotbemaintained,Itwas,therefore, hailedasanescapebeforeitwasapprehendedasatrap. * * *
Thatthereisconfusionintheranksofnon-Conformity isamplyattestedbythefactthattheArchbishopofCanterburycouldsaytotheMethodistConference:"The ChurchofEnglandmayberegardedbyMethodistsas'a ratherfossilisedparent,'butitisstillaparent,whileMethodism,whichmaybe/regardedasaratheradolescent, waywardchild,isstillachildoftheChurchofEngland." Hepromisedtodoeverythingpossibletowardsachieving reunion."OurLorddoesnotwantustorestcontent withthepresentsituation."SimilarmovestowardsreunionarereportedfromtheUnitedStates!Thisseems toindicatethatthethinkersofnon-Conformity,having beenseducedbyModernism,thesimpleradherentsare castingaboutformorereliableleadership.Ifthereunion ofProtestantismispossible(includingtheOrthodoxchurches)itmaybenobadthing.ItmayfacilitatethemissionoftheCatholicChurchtodrawallbackintotheprimitiveunityoftruth.

Itiswelltostressanother point:thispositivecondemnation bytheChurchisareflectionofthe NaturalLaw.TheNaturalLaw forbidsthereadingofallmorally dangerousworksofliterature,as anoccasionofsinandathreatto moralintegrity.Thereisatendencytoregardthelawsofthe Church,inthisasinotherthings, asanunwarrantedinterference withpersonalliberty;manyCa-
tholicsevenfailtoappreciatethe reasonsbehindtheselawsand tendtoregardthemasnecessary perhapsfortheordinaryrunof thefaithful,butavexatiousrestrictionfortheenlightened.

Butitisanotherstorywhenwe cometobooksandplayswhich possessorpretendtosomedegree ofliteraryexcellence,Thenitis contended-persistentlyandpassionately-thatartisall,thatthe rulesofgoodliteraturetranscend thelawsofmorality.
Sometimesthiscontentioniscarriedtoitsextremeand,itmust beconfessed,logicalconclusion,as itwasbythepaladinsof"Aestheticism"inthenineteenthcentury"Decadent"periodofEnglishliterature.Theirslogan was:ArtforArt'ssake.
ThusOscarWilde,duringhis libelsuitagainsttheMarquisof Queensbery,whenaskedincrossexaminationbyEdwardCarson ifheadmittedthatacertainstory wasimmoral,replied:"Itwas worse;itwasbadlywritten." Whenaskedifhethoughtitblasphemous,hereplied:"Ithinkit violatedeverycanonofartistic beauty."Thatisanattitudeof mindinanutshell.Awriter shouldnotbelimitedinhisfreedomtosayanything,totreatof anysubjectinanyway;hisliterarycraftsmanshipisallthatmatters. THREENUNSSENTENCED UNHEARD.
Threenunsweresentencedto death,anotherwassenttoprison for21years,75wereexiledand 241dismissedfromStateinstitutions,saysareportfromYugoslaviadetailingthepersecution againsttheSistersofCharityof St.VincentdePaul. Thenunssentencedtodeath werenotallowedanydefence. Theywerechargedwithmurdering woundedPartisansinhospital. Presscampaignsaccusethenuns ofill-treatinghospitalpatients. OnenewspaperpublishedacartoonshowingSistersofCharity murderingchildren.Threatsof violenceagainstthemhavebeen madeatpublicmeetings.

Theattendanceandenthusiasm displayedbythosepresentnot onlybodeswellforthefuutreof theY.C.W.inNedlands,butalso fortheinter-parishactivities whicharebringingtheCatholic youthoftheArchdiocesetogether.
Theurgentnecessityofthisis beingadmirablyrealisedbothin theY.C.W,andN.C.G.M.Inthe absenceofHisGracetheArchbishop,MastRev.Dr.Prendiville,theceremonywasconductedbyRev.Dr.Sullivan.
Afterbeingintroducedbythe NedlandsPresidentoftheY.C.W., Mr.M.Child,Dr.Sullivanexpressedhispleasureinofficiallydeclar ingtheY.C.W.ofNedlandsaconstitutedbranch,andconveyedthe Archbishop'spleasureandgood wishesattheevent.
Hethenwentontodescribethe workoftheY.C.W.andwhatwas -expectedofitsmembersinthe furtheranceofChrist'steachinys.

TheVaticanWirelesshaslately givenagooddealofinformation aboutthehostilityshowntothe ChurchintheFarEastbythe Sovietauthoritiesandbythe ChineseCommunists.Mgr.Hans Schonhoger,whoresidesinRome andisattachedtotheCongregationdePropagandaFide,broadcastingonApril2,said:
"ReportsfromPekin-speakof greatanxietybecauseofCommunistactivitiesopenlyhostileto theChurch.FromKorea,too, especiallyfromthenorth,where SwissandGermanmissionariesare active,highlydisquietingreports havebeenreceivedfromreturn. ingsoldiers.Therealmisery,the reportssay,beganafterhostilities hadceased.Duringthewarnot onebombfellonHam-heung.A fewhitswerescoredonWo-san. butthemissionremainedunscathed.Foodandothermaterialsbecamescarce,andmission workmoredifficult.Onepriest diedoftyphoid,whiletheother recoveredfromtyphus,thanksto thedevotedcareofhisflock.
"OnAugust15thewirelessannouncedtheJapanesecapitulation.Withoutmuchdelay,Russianofficersandsoldiersarrived, searchedeverything,andtook awaythemoneywhichtheChristians,forsafety'ssake,haddepositedwiththemissionaryatthe hospital.Complaintswereofno avail.Othersoldiersforcedtheir wayintothechurchthroughthe windowsandstolecarpets,clothing,altarcloths,etc.Thetabernaclewasprizedopen.Fortunatelythemissionaryhadtaken theBlessedSacramenttosafety. Whatthesoldiersdidnottake awaytheysmashedanddestroyed. TheJapanesefaredevenworse; theyarewanderingaboutthe countryasbeggars,notknowing wheretoturn."

Food,money,clocks,clothing,were carriedoffbythe"liberators',"and ofanotherwhere"thewholetown, includingthebeautifulchurch,the vicarageandtheschool,were burntdownbytheJapanesebeforetheirwithdrawal.Thebody ofFatherDittmarwasfoundby theChristians:itisnotcertain whetherthebulletinhischest wasofJapaneseorRussianorigin.""ManyKoreans,especially Youngpeople,havejoinedthe Communistmovement,"Mgr. Schonhofferconcluded.

Twodayslateragain,onApril 5,theVaticanwirelessreported: "Thetemple(sc.,cathedral?)of Sienhsien,inHopei,northern China,seatoftheVicariateofthe samename,whichisgovernedby theChineseJesuitBishop,Mgr. FrancisXavierChao,hasbeeninvadedandsackedbytheChinese EighthArmy,whichisCommunist.Thenewsofthishasjust reachedthe"Fides"agency.It wasbroughttoPekinbyayoung Christianreligiouswhomanaged toescape.Thereisnoprecise newsofEuropeanandAmerican religious.Severalaresaidtobe inprison. "TheVicariateofSienhsienhas apopulationoffivemillions.Accordngto1939statistics,86,1000 oftheseareCatholics."
