ThenettresultfromtheSociety ofSt.Peter'ApostlefortheeducationofNativePriestsinmission lands,during1945was£2,174Os. Od.,representingaslightincrease overtheamountrealisedin1944. Theactualincreaseshouldbe greaterthan-this,asseveralcurtsiderablesumsarebeingheldby diocesandirectorsagainstthecompletionofperpetual'busses. ApostolicDelegateOdngratulatee Cardinal. HisExcellency,attheconclusion 01theNationalDirector'sreport said:

"Firstofallitismypleasant dutytoextendthemostcordial congratulationsoftheEpiscopal CommitteeofthePontificalMissionworkstoHisEminenceCardinalGilroy,onhiselevationto theSacredCollegeofCardinals. TheRev.AR.E.Thomashas beennominatedtosucceedMonsignorHannanasNationalDirector.FatherThomas,Directorof theCatholicSocialServiceBureau,hasbeen withthe PontificalMissionWorkssince 1939asDiocesanDirectorofSydneyandamemberoftheNational Council.Heresignedhisposition ofDiocesanDirectorattheendof lastyear,butretainedhisseatin theNationalCouncil. Hisheadquarters,asNational DirectorofCatholicMissions,will beinSydney.

THELATEFATHER SHANNON

ThenumberofpromotersworkingforthePropagationofthe FaithinAustraliaatthepresent timeis11,667.Thisshowsanincreaseof47overthenumberlistedforthepreviousyear,andisa markofrealadvancementasthe tendencyhasnotbeentoincrease thenumberofpromoters,but rathertoconsolidatethenumber thatwerealready'working.

Duringthecourseoftheyear thepromoterswerefurtherorganisedunderchiefpromotersina greatmanyparishesinorderto maketheworkmoreeffectiveand moreco-ordinated.Inthisregard,theorganisationintheArchdioceseofSydneyisoutstanding. Regularmeetingofchiefpromotersareheld;inthecourseofthe year,thechiefpromoters,both menandwomen,madespecial -weekendretreats

In1899,FatherClunewassent toAustralia,arrivingatFremantle on,October2nd,andimmediately joinedFathersO'FarrellandHunt inathree-weeks'missionatthe Cathedral.From1899to1904 FatherClune'slabourswereince,antthroughouttheWest,conductingsomeremarkablemissions ontheGoldfields.

In1904hewaschosentogive theannualretreattotheclergyof Sydney,andalsotoconducta missioninSt.Mary'sCathedral, Sydney.In1905hewenttoWellington,N.Z.,astheSuperiorof thenewfoundation.There,ona magnificentsiteoverlookingthe harbour,hebuiltthebeautiful churchofSt.Gerard.From1905 to1909hepreachedmissionsand retreatsthroughoutNewZealand.In1909hereturnedtoPerth asrector.Againheknewnorest, travellingthegreatdistancesof theWestgivingmissions.

OnMay20th,1910,hewas calleduponbyBishopGibneyto preachthepanegyriconthedeath ofKingEdwardVII.Beforea crowdedCathedralthatincluded thefirstcitizensoftheState,the Governor,theJudiciary,theGov-

OnMarch17th,1911,PatCck JosephClunewasconsecratethe fourthBishopofPerthbyCardinalMoran.Theearlyyeasof hisepiscopacywerespent,ashe said,''intheguiseofabeggar" movingaroundthedinci-se,appealingtohisflockincity,town andcountry,toassisthiminreducingthecrushingdebtthatlay soheavilyuponhisshoulders.On May11911,thecentraldiocesan debtthathehadtoassumereachedthestaggeringtotalof 2120.612.Thattheresponseof thepeoplewasgenerousisapparentfromthefactthatnearly £70,000waspaidoffdu,-inghis firstyearasaBishopandonApril 30.1922,2110,964hadbeen'paid offthecentraldebtof1911.

FirstArchbishopofPerth: 1913. In1913Dr.Clunepaidhis adliminavisittoRome.AfterwardshevisitedIrelandinsearch ofpriests,anditwasinthetown ofMullingarthathereceivedthe newsthattheDioceseofPerth, whichhadhithertobeensuffragantoAdelaide,wasmadean ArchiepiscopalSeewithDr. CluneasitsfirstArchbishop.

OnAugust23rd,1916,Dr.Clune leftFremantleonthetroopship "Orontes"asChaplain-Generalto theCatholicmembersoftheAI.F. withtherankofColonel.The missionaryzealwaskindledinto flameonthatcrowdedtransport. Completelycharactristic of Christ'searthlyexistencewasHis allembracingcharityandlovefor sinfulman.Acrossthepagesof theNewTestamentyoumight writethewordMERCYHeknew betterthananyoneelsethatman isunhappymostofallbecauseof sin.Totheconscience-ladenand sickofheartHeappearedasa divinemessengerofhope.Oneof thegravestreproachesofHisselfsatisfiedenemieswasthatDewas thefriendofthosewhomthey superciliouslycalled"sinners."Recallthescenewhenthesesame

enemies,notwillingtofacethe MasterHimself,askedHisapostles:"WhydothyourMastereat withpublicansandsinners?"Tu themChristgavethebrusqueand completeanswer:"Theythatare inhealthneednotthephysician, buttheythataresick. Iam notcometocallthejust,butsinners,torepentance."Therewas nosinladensoulbutfoundinHim theveryincarnationofunderstandingandmercy,Againand againHetriestodescribeinhumanlanguageHisoverpowering longingtocalltheunfortunate andthesinfultoabetterlife,and totheknowledgeofthemercyof God.SeehowHedescribesHimselfastheshepherdwho,oncountinghislittleRock,findsthatoneis strayingtodangerouspasturesor topoisonedwaters.Heleavesthe 99sheepwheretheyare,safeand sound,andgoesoffseekingthe wanderingstraggler.Whenatlast Hefindsit,Hebringsitback, HisHeartalightwithjoy.Nor doesHedriveitbeforeHim,but putsituponHisshouldersand callsonallHisfriendstorejoice withHiminthesaferecoveryof thelostone.InHisclassicstory oftheprodigalson,Hepaintsthe storyofeverymanwholeavesthe houseofGod,tofindhishappiness intheso-called"goodtimes"of sin.Aswillalwayshappen,the humanheartcannotfindpermanentpleasureinaroundofgaiety orinsimplyhavingone'sownway. Butwhenatlastthesinner,heart sickandweary,determinestore turntohisFather'shouse,hefinds thatsamedivineFatherwaiting andanxiousforhisreturn.The welcomehometoGod'shouseis alwayscomplete.Thereareno halfmeasures.Hereturnsupon hisoldfooting,asonandaneternalhero,aslongasheistrulyrepentant.Butallthisteachingis amplybroughtoutbytheclassic examplesofChrist'slifeinthepardonofsomanyunfortunateswho perhapsthoughtthemselveseternallylost.Menhadlongsincediscardedthem.Theyhadbeencast outuponthedustheapsofthe world,whenChristcameintotheir lives.TheyheardHimspeak. TheysawtheeternalloveinHis eyes.Theyrealisedthathereat lastwashopewhenmendeniedit them,ThinkofMagdalene,with allthesensualityofthebrothel burnedintohersoulandmarked inherface.kneelingbeforeHim whoseheartwassocleanand whoselifesoutterlychaste."Many sinsareforgivenherbecauseshe hathlovedmuch."Thinkofthe womantakeninadultery,lyingin theroad,surroundedbyaccusers. hearingthewordsofeternalhope:

"NeitherwillIcondemntheGo, sinnomore."Recalltheparalytic,hopingforthecureofhiswizenedlimbs,andreceivingaswell thehealthofHissoul."Goin peace,son,thysinsareforgiven thee."Neverforgetthemighty dramaofGolgotha,whenhewhom weknowastheGoodThiefturned wearyandpain-filledeyestothe twistedbodyofChrist.Recall thehopethatspranginhisheart whenHemetthegentleglanceof JesusofNazareth:andfeelthe thrillthatranthroughhispainrackedbodywhenthosebroken lipsgavehimpardonbetweenthe saddleandtheground."Thisday shaltthoubewithmeinParadise."Recallalltheseexamples,brethren,andyouwillhave butonethought,onejudgment uponthelife-ofChrist.Itwasa lifeofmercy;itwasalifeofpardoningmentheirdailytrespasses: itwasalifegivenwhollytothe

pursuitofmen'ssouls.Seethe personaltouch-howmuchit counted.YoudonotfindOur Lordgivinggeneralpardons.He knew%theneedthateachofushas, alongingfurtheassurancethat weourselvesarepardonedforour faults;andsoHislifeonearthwas devotedtothatmightyworkof mercy-tobringtomenthepersonalpardonofGod.

Christ'sPowerOverSinTransferredtotheChurch.

NoChristian,noonewhoreally believesthatChristisGod,will denytheforceofwhatIhavejust said.Asamatteroffact,many peopleindulgeinavaindreaming wishthattheyhadbeenbornat atimewhentheytoomighthave madepersonalcontactwith Christ,andmighthavereceived Hispersonalassurancethattheir liveswerecleansedofalldefilement.NowtheCatholicdoctrine oftheSacramentofPenanceis justthis-thatJesusChristDID transfertoHisChurchtheimmensepowerthatHewieldedso generously-thepowertoforgive sins.

OneofthemosttriumphantobjectionstotheCatholicdoctrine ofConfessionisputinthese words:"HowcanaMANforgive sins?"Icalltheobjection"triumphant,"becauseithasbeenmy' experiencethatwhenithasbeen puttomeithasnearlyalways beenproposedasanobjectionof suchweight.thatmyquestioner hasobviouslybeenoftheopinion thatitwasunanswerable.Yet theanswerto'itissosimplethat itrequiresnospecialtrainingin logictogiveit.Hereitis.Aman canforgivesinsIFGodgiveshim thepowertodoso.Theforgivenessofsinisobviouslyamatter forGod.HeistheOneoffended.Healonecangrantpardon. Hecan,ofcourse,deputiseothers toforgivesins,asHehasgranted tosomanythepowertowork miracles,Idonotrefermerely tomiraclesrelatedinthestories oflivesofourCatholicSaintsofrecenttimes.OpentheNewTestamentandyouwillfindSt.Peter curingaparalyticataword.You willfindthatpeopleactuallyleft theirsicksothattheshadowof theApostlemightfalluponthem andcurethem.Well,ifGodcan transferHispoweroverthepower ofnaturetoamereman,surely Hecandothesamewiththepoweroversin.

Lookatitthisway.Ahuman beingsitsuponthechairofjustice inoneofourSupremeCourts.He passessentencesoffines,imprisonment,evenofdeathuponhisfellowman. Bywhatauthority doeshetaketohimselfthispower overhisfellows'property,liberty, orlifeitself?Surelynotinhis ownname,No,heactsinthe nameoftheState.Hesitsthere mantledwiththeawfulpowerof humansociety.Soalsoapriest canforgivesinsIFGodhasgiven himthepowertoforgivesins.So thewholequestionisnotHOW canamanforgivesins,butDID GodgivetoHisChurchthepower overthesinsofmen.Andthe answeris,Hemostcertainlydid.

Recallamomentthecircumstancesofthetextofmysermon. ThescenesissetinJerusalem aftertheResurrectionofOurLord. Christcomessilently,mysteriouslyintothemidstoftheApostles. andtheyaregladwhentheyknow thatitistheLord.ThenHeperformsthetransferofpowerof whichIhavebeenspeaking.SolemnlyHebegins:"AstheFather hathsentme,Ialsosendyou." Thereisaninklinghereofwhat Heintendstodo.TheFather hadsentHimtoseekandsave thatwhichwaslost.SonowHe wassendingHisChurchuponthe samemission.Hebreathesupon them,asasymbolofthebreath ofpowertobegiven:"Receiveye theHolyGhost"-theDivineSpirit oftruth-"Whosesinsyoushall fergivetheyareforgiventhem, andwhosesinsvoushallretain theyareretained."Brethren,if humanwordshaveanymeaning, surelythesewordsofChristare selfevident.Ihaveneverbeen abletounderstandhownon-Catho-

lies,whoclaimastheironeauthority-thewitnessoftheBible, candenytheterrificforceofthese wordsofChrist,ortheCatholic doctrineofConfession.Obviousy thishistoricoccasion,Christ OurLord,GodandMan,gave powertomen,toHisapostlesand totheChurc,11ofwhichtheywere thefoundationstones,thepower toforgiveornotforgivesinsas theyjudgedbest.

Brethren,cannotyouseethefull beautyoftheConfessional?Itis theprojectionintoourowntimes ofthepersonalpardonthatChrist grantedsoofteninthedaysofHis fleshtopoorsinnerslikeourselves whoneededHispardonnoless thanwedo.TheSacramentof Penancedoesnotgetbetweenus andGod.ItbringsusTOGod. ItflingsusbeforethefeetofJesus Christ,andwiththesinnersofall timewehearintheabsolutionof thepriestthetendermercyofthe cryofChrist:"Goinpeace,thy sinsareforgiventhee."When youkneelthereintheshadowy darknessoftheCatholicconfessional,youkneelatthefeetof Jesus.Whenyoutellyoursins withcourageandwithoutwithholdinganythingthatisreally serious,youpourthatstoryoffailing,selfishness,impurity,dishonesty,bitterness-whateveritisyoupourthatwretchedstoryinto theinfiniteseaofthemercyofthe SacredHeart.Whenyoumurmur Youractofsorrow,youtellyour taleofgrieftoHimwhohaslisten. edtosomanysuchtales;and 'whenatlastthepriestliftshis handandpronouncesyouabsolved fromsin,youknowthatfromthe lipsofChristontheCross,from thelipsofGodinHeaven,comes thatverysamepardon.And whenyoucomebacktoyourplace amongyourfellowsyouknowthat youhavecastoffaloadofsinfor ever.Neveragaincanthose crimes,betheyasscarlet,be chargedagainstyou.Theyare eternallyobliterated.Nomatter whatyoumayhavedone,nomatterwhatdepthsofhumanweaknessyoumayhavesounded,once youhavebroughtyourburdento theConfessional,youmay'forgetit all;Youcanstandheadhigh amongyourfellowsandknowthat youhaveatonedforalifetimeof crimeinthesacredwatersofthe PasionofChrist.

ConfessionMakesSinEasyFor Catholics. InthelightofwhatIhavesaid, youmightatfirstimaginethatthe doctrineofConfessionmakesit easyforCatholicstoleaddouble lives;tosinstrongly,touse Luther'simpiousexpression.Unfortunatelytherearethosewho givethisimpression,Ihaveat timeshearddiscussionsamonglayfolk,whohavespokenwithrather brutalfranknessaboutthehypocrisyofsomewhousethisSacramentandyetleadverysinfullives. Mindyou,wearereallyinnopositiontojudgeothersortoknow thedreadstruggletheymayundergoagainstevilhabits.Weshould neverforgettheadviceofChrist: "Judgenot,thatyoumaynotbe judged."Still,thissortofthing isnotuncommon.Womenhave beenheardtosaythattheydo notintendtogiveupthepractice ofcontraception,yettheyinsist upongoingtoConfession.Their ratherridiculousexplanationis: Oh,Ijustdon'ttellthepriestthat sin.Ofcourse,thatishypocrisy. Itisworse.Itissacrilege. A businessmanmayuseallkindsof sharppracticesinbusiness,may stooptoanykindoffraud,and stillappearattheCommunion rail,orfrequenttheSacramentof Penancewithoutanyideaofamendment.Yetheknowsthathe socloselyresemblesthewhited sepulchreofChrist'sparablethat OurLord'swordsmaybeapplied tohim-beautifulwithout:butinsidefilledwithdeadmen'sbones, allevilrottenness.Ayoungwomanmay,inthedaysofpreparationformarriage,goSaturday afterSaturdaytoConfession,confesstosinsofunchastitywithher "boy-friend,"andyetneverintend togiveupthosesins.She,too, liketherest,isnotonlyguiltyof hypocrisy,she,too,notonlybrings

discredituponherreligion,butshe ispilingupsinuponsin,sacrilege uponsacrilege.Because,brethren,Confessiondemandsaboveall thingsthevirtueofhonestyand sincerity.ToobtainGod'spardon intheSacramentofPenanceyou mustnotonlybesorryforwhat youhavedoneinthepast,butyou mustbeutterlydetermined,with God'sGrace,toavoidthatsinfor thefuutre.Catholicswhouse thisSacramentwell,findinita mostpowerfulmeansoflivingholilyinaworldofevil,Bythe graceandhelpgiventhem,andby theirrepeatedgoodresolutions theygraduallyshakeoffthefaults ofcharacterthatthreatentoruin them.Bylisteningto,andtaking theadviceoftheirconfessor,they findthatvirtuebecomesmorenaturaltothem.Inaword,bythe properuseoftheSacramentthey finditasteppingstonetoanobler ChristiancharacterandtoadeeperloveofGod.

Confession'sGreatestAdvantage. But,mydearbrethren,thereis oneaspectoftheSacramentof Penancethatwecannotaffordto losesightof-itsmostsatisfying qualityisthesureguaranteeit givesofpardonforsin.Idonot intendtostandhereto-nightand tellyouthatConfessionisalways easyorpleasant.Itisnevereasy toadmitthatYouare.wrong.It isneverpleasanttoadmitthatyou havebeenguiltyofcrimeswhose memoryiseverareasonforshame. But,Confessionwellmadeissoassuring,sopermanentlysatisfying, thatweshouldthankGodforiton ourknees,ForConfessionisa Divineguaranteethatoursinsare forgiven.Letmeputitthisway. SupposetherewerenoSacrament ofPenance.Supposethatwehad todependuponanactofperfect contritionforoureternalsalvation.Wouldyouhaveconfidence inyourself?inYoursorrow?in yoursincerity?Seethatdying maninhislasthours.Alonglife ispassing.Forty(fifty,more yearsliebehindhim.Theyare mistedoverwiththefogsoftime. Heknowsthathehasmademany mistakes.Hecanremembersome ofthem.Othersaregonefrom hismind.Heliestherewiththe creepingparalysisofdeathupon him.Theworldisslippingaway. Thiswastheoccasionofthefirst recitalinthefifthseriesofthe Everyman'sMusicconcertsarrangedandsponsoredbytheAdult EducationBoard.Theremaining tworecitalsinthisserieswillbe presentedonApril4andApril25.

Itisneveroutofplacetosaya wordinfavouroftheimaginative policyoftheAdultEducation Board,which,undertheinspired leadershipofFredAlexander, strivescontinuallytobringbefore Perthaudiencessomethingworthy oftheirattention,Thereisnothing shoddyaboutthefareofferedby theAdultEducationBoard,and onecanalwaysbesurethatthe eagleeyeofProfessorAlexander willnotmissanopportunityto furthertheBoard'sinterestswhicharelargelyours.

TheconcertatWinthroplosta gooddealoftheinformalitywhich distinguishedthemid-summer meanderingsattheSomervilleAuditorium.Thiswasanatural concomitantofthechangedlocale. Itisnoteasytobeateasewithin theaugustwallsofWinthropHall -evenUniversitystudentshave foundthisout.

TraditionofEveryman'swasobserved,however,whenNoraCoalstadprefacedherplayingwith what,accordingtopractice,should havebeenexplanatorynotes.The explanationdevelopedsmoothly intoamusicallectureofgreatinterestandconsiderablebrilliance. Effortlessly,andwithpreciseclarity,thespeakertracedthegrowth ofpianoplayingfromScarlattito Prokofiev.Anintroductionof thisnaturewasaninvaluableaid tounderstandingwhenmusic alonewaslefttoworkitsmagic onthelisteningear.

Thecontrastbetweenthesingle, cohesiveoutlineprovidedbyCoalstadandthescrappy,unsatisfactoryannotationsofMissLorraine Davieswasmostmarked,andgives risetoaqueryastowhetherthe lattermethod-theoneusuallyfollowed-isreallyasusefulasthe former.Itistrue,ofcourse,that theformermaynotalwaysbepracticable.OnemusthastentoexcuseMissDaviesbecauseofher rawnessandnotunexpectednervousness.Infact,theobviousdiscomfortofthisartistwhenfaced withaddressingtheaudienceposes

Sir,-Inlastweek'sissueofyour paperyoupublishedabiographyof thelateBishopGibney.Injustice tohismemory,Idesiretopoint outseveralgravemistakesthat Youmade.However,Iperceive throughyourwritingsadesireto putthekindestconstructionon whatyouconsiderhismistakes,so thatinitselfleadsmetobelieve thatyoucollectedyourinformationratherloosely.

InthefirstplaceBishopGibney wasnotborn,asyousay,"under thethatch,"butIpassoverthat asofnoconsequence,andgodirect tothetwomostseriouscharges youhaveaccusedhimof.

IwishYoutoknowthatIhave travelledextensivelyintheWest andhavemixedwithpeopleinalmosteverycalling,andIhavehad towaittolearnofthepriestswho gave"gravescandalindeed"from yourprintedpages.Ifthiswere trulythecaseImustexpressmy unboundedadmirationforthe charityofourpeoplewhopreferred toallowthescandalstodiewith thoseunfortunatepriestswholived andlabouredinsuchprimitive andlonelysurroundings.

TheimplicationinyourbiographythatHisLordshipwasobliged toresignin1910onaccountofthe financialburdenshewasunableto copewithisnotcorrect.That twoofhisbusinessventureswere failuresisnotveryextraordinary whenoneconsidersthelonglistof successfulonestohiscredit,

IthinkIamrightinsayingthat verbalannotationsareacarry-over fromEveryman'searlydays,when HanlYandBlackperfectedthe techniqueinfrontofArmyaudiences.Programmeswerethee, ofcourse,outofthequestion.

Moreover,itwasprobablymuch moresuitableandpopulartoestablishhumancontactbetweenartistandaudience,andadistinct advantagefromtheeducational pointofview,Soldierstalkingto soldiersinthelanguageofsoldiers mayhavebeenagoodthing-and withHanlYandBlackdoingthe talking,itwas-butinthecivilihn sphere,wherethereisanaccepted concertatmosphereandartistsare ofalltypes,itisdoubtfulwhether itisworthwhileadheringrigidly toverbalannotations.

ThepianismofNoraCoalstad wasentirelydelightful.Itwas characterisedratherbysparkling precisionanddeftmanagementof subtlechangesinspeedandcolouringratherthanbytranscendentfireorsheerinspiredbrilliance.

Theworksperformedwerefour sonatasfromScarlatti(Pastorale, Capriccio,SonatainBFlatMajor andSonatainCMajor),Chopin's SonatainBMinorandagroup composedofthefollowing:"Bythe Seashore"(Smetana),"Voiles" (Debussy),"Evocation"(Albeniz),andSonataNo.3inAMinor (Prokofiev).

MissLorraineDavishasavoice ofhuskyqualitywhich,combined withhergoodstageappearance, shouldearnhermanymoreengagements.Onefeelsthatnotall thesongschosenwerewell-suited tohervoice.Herfirstgroupconsistedof"TheGentleMaiden" (LouisLavater),''ByDimpled Brook"(Dr.Arne),"Secrecy" (HugoWolf),and"Sunday" (Brahms).Inthesecondhalfof theprogrammethesongswere"At Night"(Rachmaninov),"TheRose HasCharmedtheNightingale" (Rimsky-Korsakov),"Fromthe TombofanUnknownChineseWoman"(GranvilleBantock),and "TheCuckoo"(MartinShaw). Eventhepethobby-horseoftheAustralianCommunism-Indonesia-isnolongerfitforthecourse.Forthe CommonwealthGovernment,afterquiteunnecessaryhesitance,delayanddilly-dallyingwithUnionextremists,has recognisedthesovereigntyoftheNetherlandsGovernmentintheN.E.IAndsandhasbeenthrownintothe wheelsofthatcuriousmachinerywhichpassesforjustice inYugoslavia.ForwhiletheTitoganghasarrestedMihailovich,theAmericanStateDepartmenthasintervenedwith arequestthatAmericanArmypersonnelbepermittedto testifyathistrial.TheRussianpuppetsinYugoslavia willnotbe aboutpermittingthis,fortheinfamous"People'sCourts"donotfunctionattheirbestin thepresenceofneutralobservers.ButitcertainlybehovestheAlliestoensureanabsolutelyfairtrialforthe gallantgeneralwhomtheysocallouslyabandoned.The verythingthatBritainsucceededinpreventinginGreece attheeleventhhourwasanidenticalaffairwithwhatshe permittedtohappeninYugoslavia.Theexpediencyof warmayhavebeenserved,butAlliedhonourwasstained. Thedivinewordsofforgiveness flowfromhislipslikeasoothing balmuponthetorturedsoul,and inhighHeaventhesentenceis ratified,Deathlosesitsterrors whenthereisthisDivineguarantee,whenYoufeelsosafeaftera goodConfession.Iremembera medicalman,notaCatholic,describingascenethatcouldhappen hereorinanyCatholicchurchin theworld.Hewaspresent,ona Saturday,inachurchwhilepeople werepreparingtogotoconfession.Amongthethrongofpenitentswasagirlinherearlytwentieswhowasobviouslyundergreat stress.Herfacewasdrawnand white.Shestaredatthetabernaclewithalookofagony.From timetotimeshemovedpainfully inherpewandburnedherfacein herarms.Thedoctormovedto anotherpartofthechurchtovisit asidechapelofOurLady.Scarce tenminuteshadpassedwhenhe feltsomeonebrushpasthimand sawthegirlhehadobservedin suchstraitskneelbeforethepictureofOurLady,Inhisown words,hedescribesheras"transformed.'"Allhertensenesswas gone,"heremarked,"andthelines ofworryhadsmoothedthemselves fromherface.Nosignsofmental tormentnow;noanxiety;onlyperfectrelaxationandpeace.IfI, asapcychiatrist,couldhavedone forthatgirlinthreehourswhat hasbeenaccomplishedinabout fifteenminutes,Ishouldhave thoughtmyselfacleverphysician indeed."

Somemonthsbeforehisdeathin Sydney,Dr.'Angus,Directorofthe PresbyterianTrainingCollegefor MinisterswithintheUniversityof Sydney,wroteareligiousarticlein oneoftheSundaypapers.He commentedthatthegreatesttragedyoftheReformationwasthe abolitionoftheCatholicConfessional.Hesawinitoneofthe mostremarkablemeansofbringing peacetomen'ssouls;hecouldnot appreciatethesplendourofitasa meansofgrace.

So,theAustral'anCouncilof TradeUnionsisworried.It wouldseemthattheyhavediscoveredanobnoxiouslittlecreature called.a"Communist."Italso appearsthatsomesterlingmember ofthe'A.C.T.U,hasdaredcallthis creaturea"whiteant."This "whiteant,"orCommunist,whicheveryouprefertocallit(wecould thinkofotherthings),wasfirst discoveredbytheA.C.T.U.during theirresearchintosuchdeepand learnedthingsas"TradeUnionism inAustraliaToday,"andjustlatelyinavitalissueregardingthe "Down-troddenmassesofIndonesia." Thislasthas,andstillis,causing themworld4wideembarrassment.

InfacttheA.C.T,U.isblushingso hardthatforthefirsttimeinits lifeitislookingforReasons.And asImentionedbefore,ithasfound this"WhiteAnt,"thisCommunist. Ofcoursemanypeoplecould havetoldthemofthislittlepest Yearsago-infactdid.Butin thosedaystheywerenotknown bytheA.C.T.U.asCommunists, butas"ourgallantbrothersin arms,"or"ourworkingclassbrethren,"orothercannedphrases.It issaidthattheywerealsogood supportwhentheLabourParty wasfindingitsfeet-but,ofcourse, 'weprefernottobelievethat.

However,togettotherootof thevexatiousIndonesianquestion whichhasstirredtheGovernment i.e..A.C.T.U.)toitsfoundations.

thatIndonesiacomprisesmanydifferentpeoplesholdingdifferentre ligiousbeliefsandleadingcontrastingmodesoflife,Thereareapproximately50millionMohommedans,onemillionChristians,and one.millionHindus,inadditionto primitivetribes,head-hunters,and such.

Itisevidentthatanysingle would-besolutionofthisconflictingpolitical-religiousproblemis absurd,andwouldinvolvetheuttersubjectionandmartyrdomof somesectionsofthismixedcommunity.

Why?Wellasyouknow,the Mohammedansaregenerallyfiierce andfanaticalfollowersoftheirreligion,andtruetotypetheJavaneseMohammedansinalltheirferociousbigotryhavebroughtabout anuprisinginwhichtheyhavedeclaredwarontheBritish,Dutch, Eurasians,Ambonese,andMen& danese-butprimarilyonall"Chris. tianinfidels,"Behindthisuprisingliesthehandofourtemporarily"horsdecombat"enemy, Japan.WhileweconvenientlyignoredournearneighboursJapan studiedthemclosely.Having summedupthesituationher agents,wellversedstudents,descendedupontheMohammedan countries.Closeco-operationwas establishedbetweentheIslamic SocietyofJapanandthatofthe N.EJ.Anofferofassistancein overthrowingDutchrulefirstcame

Asweknow,subsequenttotheIn: donesianuprisingvariousprominentAustralianunionsnotonlyexpressedtheiropinionsregarding theIndonesianquestion,butopenlystatedtheirintentionofblackballingtheDutchGovernmentIt isawellknownfactthatthePress oftheworldtookthisasfairlyindicativeofAustralia'sopinion.The Dutch,however.beingapatient people,watchedandwaited.Maybethisisjusttheopinionofa minority,'theysaid.Ofcoursethe Governmentwillhavethegood sensetosquashthewholething. InthemeanwhileAustraliandemonstrationswerebeingstaged, andtheNetherlands,itwould seem,waspaintedalmostasblack asHitler'sGermany.

EventuallythesituationbecamesuchthatthepatientDutch hadawordtosayandverysuddenlyAustraliafoundherself minusvaluableDutchgoodwill, andtrade.Itwasthenthatsome onementioned"WhiteAnts."

Thepublicfoundmanythingsin favouroftheDutchformofgovernmentinIndonesiathatthe whiteantshadomittedtomention.AsamatteroffactsomeonediscoveredaTruth,andhad thehidetomakeitknown.This causedquiteastir,andthenothers foundcourageandstatedfurther truthscenteringaroundIndonesia.

1938.Weareseeingthefruits ofJap-N.E.I.Mohammedancooperationto-day.Wearealsobeginningtoseethatanon-representativereligiouscombinationseeks politicalpower,and,letusnotignorethis,astepping-stoneforthe teemingmillionsoftheEastto Australia.

Asyetwehaveonlyheardthe cryof"Imperialist"directedagainsttheDutch.Wehavebeenstirredtosympathywiththestoryof adown-troddenpeople,butwe knewnothingoftheirconditions, goodorbad,andsotherecently discovered"Communist"wasplayinguponouremotionswithheartbreakingpicturesofadown-troddenpeople.

Inprotestagainstthisemotional splurgethefewvoicesof truthhavebroughtusthesefacts aboutDutchruleintheIndies.

Jaya,aloneofthegroupconcerned,isthemostricheconomicallyofalltropicalislands.Supportingthevastnumberof45 millionpeople,shehasnever'experiencedafamine.Canthisbe saidofBritishpossessions?

inthebusinessworld.Theeducationalsystemenjoyedbythe Javaneseissomethingofwhichthe DutchGovernmentmayjustlybe proud.

Yetwiththisevidencelyingat Australia'sbackdoor-Darwintherewereaffiliatedbodiesofthe A.C.T.U.readytothrowintheirlot withabunchofblood-crazedMohammedans,seekingtotyrannise theIndonesianpeoplesanddiscredittheDutchGovernment.

Throughtheactionsofthesefew Communists-ledAustraliansthe AustralianNationwasheldto ridiculeintheworldpress.And nowtheA.C.T.U.suddenlydiscoverstheCommunistsandlike Pilateseekstowashitshandsof thedisgracefulsituationengenderedbysomeofitsaffiliatedCommunist-ledUnions.

TheParliamentaryStanding CommitteeonBroadcastinghasat lasttableditsreport,aftertaking evidenceineveryStateoftheCommonwealth.Itsfindingsarevery hearteningtoCatholics,forthey unequivocallyopposethebroadcastingoftalksonsexmattersor venerealdisease.Accordingto thereporttherewerethreegroups ofthoughtoneachquestion.The firstinvitedpublicdiscussionof thematters.The-peopleofthis schoolmaybeclassedaspassive agnostics.Thatis,eitherfrom convictionorfromsheerdistaste ofhardthinkingtheywouldliketo hearwhateveryonehastosay abouttheissue.Theyarethe peoplewhoareregisteredinGallupPollsasof"noopinion,"The secondgroupismoredangerous, becausetheyaremorelogical.They arematerialistsandtheywantto seehowtheirtheoriesturnoutin practice.Theyclaimthatifyoung peoplearethoroughlyinstructed intheanatomyandphysiologyof sexitwillensurethattheywill notindulgeinimmoralconduct. This,ofcourse,isalunaticview, forittriestotreatmanasifhis intellecthadretaineditsintegrity andasifhehadnomoralattributes.Itisthedirectlegacyof secularismwhichattemptstoignoretheinfluenceofreligioninthe trainingofthewill,andthenwill notadmititsutterfailure.

Allthisludicrousliberalism drivesbackintheendtoadenial ofOriginalSin,whichisprobablY theonlyArticleofFaithwhichre. quiresnoproof.Itisanomalous forsuchpeopletopretendthat childrenareperfectlyrational whentheythemselveshavenotthe wittoseethatthereissomething fundamintallyawrywithhuman naturewhichmanofhimselfcannotcure.Andallthepractical psychologyofourtimecentres abouttheproblemofwhypeople don'tdowhattheyknowtobe trueorgood.Theevery-dayexperienceofthecommonmanconfirmsthedeliberationsofthespecialists.Forthepastthirtyyears everypublicagencyofinformation andentertainmenthasindoctrinat, edthepublicwithsexuntilthere isverylittlewholesomenessleftin sociallife.Theenormousinroads madebybirth-preventionisevidenceenoughofhowfartherot hasadvanced.Thereisnodoubt thatwehaveplentyofknowledge ofsex,butareweonewhitthe moremoral?Ofcourse,theliberalswillsayitisthewrongkind ofknowledge,butinourexperience thewholesubjectisoneonwhich itisbettertohavelessthanmore. Afterallmanhasanaturalconscienceandthehistoryofmany primitivetribeswouldputusto shameinthematterofsexual morals.

ItisveryhearteningtoCatholicsthattheCommitteeconsidered theweightoftheevidencetofavourtheviewthatradiotalkson bothsexandvenerealdisease woulddomoreharmthangood, andwouldnotrectifythedeteriorationofmoralstandards.Onthe positiveside,theresponsibilityfor suchinstructionisthrownsquarely ontheshouldersofparents.Itis quiteinorderforpublicorganisationstopersuadeparentswho shirktheirdutytoassistthem withinformationandliterature, Butthedefeatedproposalsmacked tooobviouslyofcoercion.Isay thatthedefeatoftheliberalson thisissueisheartening,becauseit showsthatthemassofpeoplein thiscountryisstillmorallysound atheart.Thismaybepartlyexplainedbythefactthatthosewho haveconsciouslystriventodeprive thenationinthematterofsexuallymoralityhaveover-reached themselvesandthatawholesalereactionhassetin.Certainlymany peoplewhohaveceasedtobe shockedareheartilysickofhaving sexdisheduptotheminfilms, magazines,streetcornersandeven inadvertisements.Thereisone placetheyaredetermineditwill notenter,andthatisthehome.In thismatteraBritisher'shomemay wellhehiscastle.

AttheendoftheHolyMass,the Germanpriestsaysaprayerforthe victors.HeaskstheLordtoillumineourmindswiththeeternalprinciplesoftruth,fromwhichjusticefor vanquishedandvictormustcome.

Newspapercorrespondents,evenofficialreporters(e.g.,Mr.Price)again andagainsaythattheGermanpeopleremaindominatedbythespiritof Nazismandthatthereisnoother politicalmovementtospeakof.If thatweretrue,theGermanpriests wouldbeappealingtoeternalprinciplesinwhichtheythemselves-orat leasttheirfollowers-donotbelieve.

Nazivs.ChristianPrinciples.

Onlyafewmonthsagothesesame Germanpriests,insilentprayer,asked fordeliverancefromthethreatofcompleteexterminationbyNazism.Under theNazis,asArchbishopGroeberof FreiberginhisPastoralLetterofJune, 1945,stated:

IntheplaceofDivinecommands weresubstitutedotherswhichwere theoppositeofthelawsofSinai andofeverythingthatconscience demandsofus.IftheNaziphilosophyhadpenetratedthesoulsofthe Germanpeople,thousandsofyears ofculture-especiallyofGermanculture-wouldhavebeenextinguished. Germanywouldhaveexistedamong

andspiritualthings.Thestrictest self-disciplineprotectedthemagainst comingintounnecessaryconflictwith theNazis.

Nazismwaswronginitsbeliefthat suchanattitudeonthepartofthe Churchwouldhavenoappealtoa largegroupofpeople,especiallyyoung people.Nazismoverlookedthefact thatsuchanattitudeandphilosophy couldgiveitsfollowersthepsychologicalforcetolivewithinNazi-Germany,whilelivingoutsideofNazism. SinisterResemblance, "WepointedoutthatwhiletheideologiesofNazismandCommunism showedawidedivergence,theiractual aimsandmethodsboreasinisterresemblancetooneanother.Bothsuppressedthelibertyoftheindividual ruthlesslybyapowerfullyorganised policemachineofcoercion,andshowed nohesitationinresortingtomass slaughterandthereductionofmultitudestoslavery,inordertoachieve theregimentedunityofthoughtand actionnecessaryfortheirpurposes. MovieShow.

Theeveningbeganwithamovie pictureshow.Someofthelads, whoweretooyoungtohave knowntheoldsilentpictures, werepuzzledatfirsttoknowjust whatcouldbedonewithout "talkie"equipment.Thefirst picture,"RoundtheCircus,"however,producedmuchlaughterand showedthatgoodentertainment waspossibleevenwithoutsound effects,

Themainpictureoftheevening wasthepremierscreeningofthe picturestakenoftheStateChampionshipsheldrecentlyatLeedervilleOvalbytheAmateurAthetics'Association.andinwhich somanymemberscompeted.

Theshowingofthesepictures rousedconsiderableenthusiasm andwithamoreexperienced movieoperatortheycouldhave beenscreenedevenmoreeffectively.Thebestshotwasof Winter'srecordbreakinghigh jumpof6ft.2iin.takeninslow motion.

1945HolyChildhoodSociety' RturnsTotalledAlmost£2,000. ThePropagationoftheFaith Societyisverygratefultothe schoolchildrenofthePerthDiocese.During1945theygave almost12,000totheMissions. Thisisaremarkableresult,and thechildrendeservethehighest praiseforthesacrificetheymade oftheirpocketmoneytohelpthe childrenintheMissionfields. Suchagrandeffortspeakswell forthetrainingthatthechildren arereceiving,foritshowsthat theyappreciatetheirfaith,and arereadytomakeasacrificein ordertospreadthatFaithandto shareitwithlessfortunatechildren.

ThisspiritofcharityandselfdenialisagreathelptotheMissions,butitisalsooftremendous importancetothechildrenwho practiceit.Forthisspirit,practisedinchildhood,willendure longaftertheimpressionsofchildhoodhavepassedaway.

Asaresultofthisfineeffortthe Ilisionswillbenefitconsiderably.ThroughtheHolyChildhood 550,000paganchildrenarebaptisedeachyear,1,200orphanages and13,000schoolsaresupported. and42,000childrenarecaredforin leperasylums.

ThelastmeetingoftheOrder washeldonMarch3,whenthe TertiariesgreetedtheirDirector, Rev.E,McBride,justreturned fromhisholiday.Therewasa professionandreceptionceremony. whenthreesistersandonebrother whohadcompletedtheirnovitiates,wereprofessed,andonesisterandonebrotherwerereceived intotheOrder.

SincethatmeetingthefraternityhaslostBrotherMichael0'Riley,whowasprofessedonhis death-bed.R.I.P.'AlargenumberofTertiariesmetandrecited theRosaryforhimandseveral wereabletoattendthefuneral, TheFranciscanClubheldthe firstofits"Musicales"for1946at theCathedralHallonMarch7, whichwasveryIsuCcessfuland wellattended.Thecollection amountedto£8,whichwasadded tothe£94madebytheTertiaries attheirstallattheClontarfFete.
