Therearemanywhorejecttheviolent,revolutionaryandterroristmet. hodsofCommunism,butwhoseekto bringabouttheultimateCommunist objectivebypeacefulandevolutionary meanswhichtheydescribeas"Socialism"harmoniseswithChristianteaching.

ItisoftensuggestedthattheobjectiveoftheAustralianLabourPartyis "Socialism."TheConstitutionofthe A.L.P.isquotedtoshowthatitsaim is"theSocialisationofIndustry,Production,DistributionandExchange." Thatisso.Buttheremainderofthe causeisseldomquoted.Thewords thatfolloware:"andalsotosecureto thepeoplecompletePolitical,Religious,IndustrialandCulturalFreedom inaccordancewiththeidealsofthe Australianpeople."Whenthetocalled"socialisationobjective"isconsideredinthelightofthesewords, thereisavastdifferencebetweenthe SocialismenvisagedbytheA.L.P.and theSocialismofthe."Omnipotent State"or"Totalitarianism"between whichandCommunismthereisonlya distinctionofmethodinattaining*4 objective.

Whenmenask,"Whathasthe churchtoofferinsolvingthesocial question?"theansweris"Everything." NeithertheChurchnoranythingelse canofferablue-printplanthatcan automaticallysolveeveryhumansocial problem.ButtheChurch,andonly theChurch,canteachsoundfundamentalprinciplesinthelightofwhichall suchproblemsmustbeapproached andapartfromwhichthereisonlydisasterahead.Itisnotjustthatthe Churchtriedtomakemengood,and thatyoucannotmakeagoodsociety withbadmenanymorethanyoucan makeagoodomeletwithbadeggs. Itisonlythatthesoundmoralsofthe Churchmakeforgoodcitizenship.It isthattheage-oldteachingShehas everpropoundedonthenatureand destinyofmanandtheindividual rightsthatarehisasaperson,andbecauseheisachildofGod,mustbeat thebackofeverypieceofsociallegislationthatisframed,ThesocialprogrammesofChristianityasgivenby OurLordinonepregnantsentence: "SeekyefirsttheKingdomofGodand Hisjustice andallthesethings shallbeaddeduntoyou."

Admittedlyitisagigantictaskto bringmentoseeandrecogniseall' this.Butitisnotimpossible.The taskdoessupposeanew.world-wide CrusadeofChristianzealandChristtianeducation.Thegreatesttragedy ofourageisthattheforcesofGodlessnessandmaterialismhavesolargelyassumedtheleadershipofthe masses,andhavehadsolargeashare intheshapingofthingstocome.In thisrespectCommunismisachallenge totheChristianconscienceandtoCa, tholiczeal.

As youknow,since,theRussianRevolutionin1917theCatholicChurchhas continuedtosufferitsgreatestmodern persecutioninthatgreatfederationof AsiaticpeoplesknownastheSocialist SixthoftheWorld.Forovertwo decadesnownoBishopandnoRussian PriestoftheCatholicChurchhasbeen officiallytoleratedintheSovietUnion. ThefateofthesixBishopsandhundredsofpriestsandreligiousofthe RussianChurchremainsoneofthe mostdistressingpagesinthehistoryof Catholicisminthistwentiethcentury. Since1917,inspiteofallthelyingpros pagandaandtheelaboratewindowdressingofthepastfewyears,thethirteenmillionCatholicswithintheprewarboundariesoftheU.S.S.R.have neverandstilldonotenjoyeventhe vestigeofreligiousfreedom.Tocare forallthosehaplessmillionsofCatholicRussians,theSovietauthorities havepermittedonlyonesolitaryCatholicpriesttoperformhisministry, andthatinMoscowalone,andthat againonlybecausethispriestisattachedtotheFrenchdiplomaticmissionto SovietRussia,andofficiallyfunctions inthatcapacity.HeisnotaRussian. andforalltheseyearsithasbeenimpossibletotrainRussiancandidates forthepriesthoodinRussiasincethe CommunistGovernmentclosedalltheologicalcollegeswhenitcloseddown thechurchesandschoolsandinstitutionsandturnedthemintotheatres andanti-Godmuseumsandsoon.

FormanyyearsnowtheChaplainto theFrenchEmbassy,thesolerepresentativeoftheCatholicHierarchyinthis nationof180millionpeople,hascarried onagainsttremendousodds,with everyconceivabledifficultyputinhis path.andwithanheroichumilityand devotednesstothecauseofChristianityinanatmosphereofatheismand blasphemy.HisnameifFatherLea poldBraun,oftheAssumptionistOrder.Andagainstthisbackgroundwe readtherecentnewsitemthatthe Rev.GeorgeLaberge,formerProfessor attheAssumptionHighSchoolin Worcester,Mass.,hasarrivedinMoscowtotakeoverdutiesaspastorof theonlyfunctioningCatholicChurchin theSovietcapital-theChurchofSt. LouisdesFrancais-accordingtoradio advicesreceivedinWashington. FatherLabergesucceedstheRev.Lea poldBraun,alsoanAssumptionist priest,whohasbeenstationedatthe Moscowchurchforthelasteleven years.FatherBraunwillreturnto theU.S.A.forreassignment.

BeforehisdeparturefromtheUnitedStates,FatherLabergetoldthe N.C.W.C.NewsServicethathehad highhopesforthefutureintakingover hisassignmentintheRussiancapital.

TheChurchofSt.LouisdesFrancoisinMoscowisFrenchproperty, andisoperatedinconnectionwiththe FrenchdiplomaticmissiontoSoviet Russia.AsRectorofthechurch, FatherLaberge,likeFatherBraun,will resideattheFrenchEmbassy.

FatherBraun'sTrialRecalled

ThenewRectoristhirty-nineyears oldandwasordainedattheBasilica OfSt.JohnLateran,inRome,on March7,1936.

Whentoldsomeweeksagothathe probablywouldbeselectedtosucceed FatherBrauninMoscow,FatherLa-

bergeundertookanintensivestudyof theRussianlanguage."Ialready haveaworkingknowledgeofRussian,"hesaid,"andIdon'tanticipate anydifficultyinmakingmyselfunderstood."

FatherLaberge-saidthatFather Braunwillremainwithhimforseveral weeksinMoscowtoacquainthimwith hisnewduties.

Manylistenersmightrememberthat severalmonthsagoFatherBraunwas broughtintoaSovietcourtonaccusationofassaultandbatterymadeby aRussianemployedasajanitorat theFrenchEmbassy.Thecourtfound FatherBraunguiltyandassesseda fineof100rubles(twentydollars).The 42-year-oldpriestappealedtoahigher court,whichreversedthefindingand exoneratedhim.

WecanonlywishFatherBraun'sintrepidsuccessoreveryblessingand successinhisverydifficultasignment.

AMERICANREPORTONPAPAL "POLITICS"

Anotheritemofinterestcomesfrom Washington,intheUnitedStatesof America.TheForeignPolicyAssociationrecentlypublishedareportentitled"TheForeignPolicyofthe Vatican,"writtenbyShermanS.Hayden,oneofitsresearchstaff.The newsagencies'accountofthisreport didlessthanjusticebothtoitandto theVatican,andoneortwoobservationsonitmadebytheJesuit,Father WilfredParsons,shouldhelptoclarify somecommonmisconceptions.

Thepurposeofthereportwastoinvestigatethechargemadeagainstthe lasttwoPopesthattheyhavebeen Fascist-minded.andthattheChurch hasfollowedtheminthisregard.It maybesaidatoncethatthereport completelyabsolvesboththePopes andtheChurchofthischarge,though itdoesfindthatinsomeofhisdealingsPiusXI.wastootrustingand complacenttowardsItalianFascists.

Thereportproperlymakesdistinctionbetweenthebasicdoctrineofthe Churchandthepersonalopinionsand policiesofthePopes.Onthiscount, ithasnodifficultyinshowingthat thereisaninherentcontradictionbetweenCatholicismandthetotalitarian philosophy.Thereisonesimplereasonforthis.Thetotalitarianphilosophyinsists"thatservicetothe StatereplacesservicetoGodasthe highestdutyofman."

NeverinDoubt.

Moreover,thereportremindsus,the Popesintheirteachingcapacityhave notbeenremissinpointingoutthis facttotheworld.IthasonlytorecallPiusXI'stwopowerfulEncyclicals,"NonAbbiamoBisogno,"ofJune 29,1931,againstItalianFascism,and "MitBrennenderSorge,"ofMarch14, 1937,againstGermanNazism.The latterofthesetwo,ofcourse,asthe reportnotes,appearsfivedaysbefore thesamePope'sEncyclical"OnAtheisticCommunism."

Asfarasdoctrinesgo,therefore,the recordoftheVaticanisclear.The worldhasneverbeenleftindoubtas towheretheChurchmuststandinits attitudetowardsthetotalitarianteachings.

WhataboutthepolicyoftheVatican towardsthenationswhichprofessed theseteachings?

CannotTakeSides.

Hereagainthereportmakesauseful distinction,Itremindsusthatas theuniversalFatherofauniversal spiritualbody,theChurch,thePope doesnotandcannottakesidesforor againstcountriesinwhichhisspiritual sonsreside.Itspolicy,therefore,is tohaverelationswithallGovern-

ments;and,thereportnotes,"The VaticanwasnodifferentinthisrespectfromtheGovernmentsofthe UnitedStatesandBritain."

Theoneexceptiontothisrulewas SovietRussia.Herethereportmight havebeenmoreexplicit.Itinclines toattributePiusXI'sattitudetowards RussiatohisfearandhatredofatheisticCommunism,andholdsthathe shouldhaveseenthatitwasalesser dangerthanNazisminitseffecton men'sminds.Itmighthaverecorded thatPiusactuallycondemnedtheRussiansystem-thedictatorshipofthe proletariat-asanunjustformofgovernment,whereastheinjusticeofGermanyandItalylayratherintheir policythanintheiractualpolitiCal system.

Itisthisthatexplainsthedifference ofpolicywhichthePopesadoptedtowardsItalyandGermany,ontheone hand.andRussiaontheother.Itis truethatthereportdoesacceptthe differenceasinevitableandonthe wholejustified,butonewouldexpect aclearerreasonforit.ThePopes,of course,inmakingaConcordatwith eachnation.arehopingthatthatinstrumentwillcorrecttheinjusticesof policy.Itwasatragedythatinthe casesofbothItalyandGermanythose hopeswereshattered;butnobodycan doanythingbutpraisethePopesfor hoping.Thereportisclearonthis point,

AttitudetoFranco.

TheVatican'spolicytowardsFranco was,thereportnotes,adeliberate choicemadenecessarybythecharacterofFranco'senemies."He(Pius XI.)appearstohaveconvincedhimselfthatherewasaclearcaseofconflictbetweentheChurchanditsenemies."Franco'sCatholicismwasthe mainreasonforhisenthusiasticsupportbytheChurch.

Thereporthasmuchtosayabout theexpressedpolicyofneutrality adoptedbyPiusXII.inthepresent war.Afterwhathasbeensaid,itis notnecessarytogointothis.Itneed onlybesaidthatthereportdetailsthe manyoccasionswhenthePopehas madeitclearthathissympathieslie withtheUnitedNations,andthatit concludesthatthePopealsorealises thattheinterestsoftheChurchlie therealso,withsomenaturalfearsthat CommunistRussiawillbringgreatproblems.

Twooftheconclusionsofthereport areworthnoting.Theyare:"(1)The viewthatthePopeisatheartaFascistandwishestoseethetriumphof moderndictatorships,whilealong sequenceofsuperficialevidencecan beconstructedtosupportit,provesto bewithoutfoundationinfact,(2)At thesametime,heisnotasupporter ofdemocracy,butisjustwhathe claimstobe-indifferenttopolitical forms,acceptinganygovernmentwhich willmeettheminimumdemandsof theChurch."

"YoumeanthatonecansaytheRosarywellandquicklyatthesametime."

Aconcentratedglareofpublicityis atthemomentbeingfocusseduponthe nursingprofession.Nowthatthe man-powercontrolshavebeenabolished,itisrevealedthatalargenumber ofyoungwomenhasbeencompelled duringthewartoworkatavitalprofessionunderlabourconditionsand wageswhichrecalltheerabeforethe FactoryActs.Certainlynoresponsiblesystemwoulddreamofaskinga barmaidtoworkundersimilarconditionorforlikeratesofremuneration. Theapathyofthepublicandgovernmentalikeinamatterofthiskind,is,I believe,adirectreflectionofthesheer materialismofeconomictrendsinour time.Peoplecanreadilyappreciate thevalueofmanormachinewhich makessilkstockings,elastic,jamor radios.Butwhenitcomestothose "services"theadequateprovisionof whichcallsforgreatqualitiesofmind andheart,peoplearealltooeasilyconfusedbecauseofthevisibleeconomic factorsarenotthere.Obviouslythe nursingofthesickisanaffairwhich cannotbecarriedoninthesameway asthemassproductionofnutsand bolts.Yetthepeopleengagedin nursingmustworkagreatdealharderforfarlessmonetaryreturn,while theelementofgratitudeforthoseattentionswhichmeansomuchtophysicalandmentalrecovery,andfor whichnohospitalfeecancompensate, isalmostcompletelyforgotten.

Muchofthenewspapercorrespondencehasdevelopedalongthelinesofa controversy,becausesomeonealleged thatnurseswereatoughlot,givento drinking,smokingandothercreature coniforts.OfthisIcan'tspeakfrom -first-handknowledge,butIthinkit likelyenoughandquiteunderstandableconsideringtheabominableconditionsoftheiremployment.Afallen angelisliabletobequiteasmucha handfulasanyofthecongenitaldevils. ThattheStateGovernmenthasseen fittoarrangesomeschemeofmonetarycompensationmaynotbeacompletesolutionofthediresituation whichisclosingdownhospitals,but anywayitisagoodbeginning,and

bycontrastitplacesthelegalquibblingofCommonwealthauthoritiesina verypoorlight,Itisinevitablethat duringthewaryearsthefieldofselectivityamongaspirantstonursing shouldhavebeennarrowed,anditis morethanpossiblethatstandards havebeenlowered-atleastasregards considerationsofhumanqualities.

Anyradicalreformofthesituation asitaffectsthefuturemust,Ibelieve, acceptattheoutsetthatnursingis verymuchmorethananotherjob.In theChristianphilosophyoflifeand workeveryjobisinfactadivinevocation-thatwayoflifebywhicha manisintendedtoreachfulldevelopmentofmindandbody,andthrough whichhehelpstosanctifyhimself.In thisgrimmachineagethemanual workerwillfinditverydifficulttosee hiswork-benchasanaltar.Forthe mostpartheseemstofindfrustration ratherthanfulfilmentinhisworkand formanythejobisanunpleasantnecessitytobeendureduntilthetimefor therealbusinessoflife-pleasure-has arrived.Womankindespeciallyhas sufferedinthismodernmechanical age.Thesoul-grindingbusinessof beinga"machine-minder"tendsalltoo quicklytostiflethatrefinementand whichevenpagansfindpleasantinwomen.Butnursingisoneof thefewremainingavocationswhich suitsthefemininenature,andoffersit realopportunitiesofennoblement.The verynatureoftheworkcallsforqualitiesofmindandheartwhichthegood paganmayindeedpossessanddevelop, butwhichChristianityaloneisableto raisetoheightsofheroismandlifedevotion.

Perhapsthebestfoot-notetothis wholematterintherealmoffact ratherthanoftheoryistheconeerte exampleoftheCatholichospitalsin ourmidst.They,too,havesuffered fromstaffshortages,becausethepressureonpublicinstitutionsgladegreaterdemandsonthem.Theywork longerhoursthananyofthevictims aboutwhomthePressisnowcomplaining.Theyreceivenosalary,But noneoftheCatholichospitalswillbe

Duringtheweekaradioeducation conferencewasopenedinCanberraby thePrimeMinister.Theissueat stakeseemstobewhetherradiocan beusedonthesideoftheangles.Up tillnowinAustraliaithasallegedly beenusedforentertainmentpurposes. TheAustralianBroadcastingCommissionappearsnowtohehavingqualms ofconscienceaboutwastingpublic moneyontheimportationofcanned noisesfromtheUnitedStates.Everybodyseemsagreedthatradio,"ifused properly,"canbeofgreateducational advantagetothepeople.NowI supposeeveryonewilllikewiseagree thateducationisslightlymoreimportantandatriflemoredifficultthanentertainment.Hencemypersonaldilemmaiswhetherthepowersthatcontrolwirelesstelegraphywillbeany moresuccessfulinthehigherfieldthan theyhavebeeninthelower.Bythis Imeantosaythatradioprogrammes asatpresentarrangedandpresented fromanentertainmentpointofview aretheabominationofdesolationspokenofbytheProphetDaniel.DespiteGalloppolls,whichshowdecisivelythatthepublicaresicktodeathof boogie-woogieandotherformsofthe voodooarts,andinmusichaveapreferenceforlightclassics.thevastbulk ofthesoundsfromthestudiosare thesesamejunglenoises,theincessant maddeningrhythm,thecontemptfor melodyandtime. Inasensethemoderncommercial radiomakesthesameclaimasthe filmsandthegutterpress-thatit givesthepublicwhatitwants.In thematterofwirelessprogrammes; however,thisisdefinitelyuntrue.So farhasthedebasementgonethata personofordinaryeducationandculturewouldneedtoemployaprivate secretarytoselectaprogrammefora givennightwhichwouldnotdrive himintoinsensaterage.Thisprocedureifpracticablewouldnot,however,beanadequatesafeguardforthe terrorandthetyrannythatisblared throughthewallsoftheadjoiningflat orneighbouringbackyard.Marconi dothmurdersleep.

Oneclearimpressionthatemerges afterseeingthefilmisthatcinemaart hasnotestablishedasuperiorityover thestage.Iquiteconfidentlyanticipatedthattheextrascopeallowedby theresourcesofthefilmindustry wouldmake"ArsenicandOldLace" intoamotionpictureofextraordinary merit;butthefilmmakesnoadvance onthestageplay,andinsomedetails 14actingthelatterwasmoresatisfying.

Forexample,B.Campbell-Graywasa muchmoreconvincinglunaticthanhis oppositenumberfromHollywood,havingamorepronouncedairofdetachmentand"lookingthepart"with

Sgreatercertainty.CaryGrantwas,of course,amuchbetterchoicethan ClaudeFlemming;butoneinclinesto theviewthattheWarnerBros.'studio wasnotextendedincastingtherole. AhighlightofthefilmwastheamusingfacialmanoeuvresofEdwardEverettHorton,asheattemptedtodecide whowasthereallunaticinafamilyof "crackpots."RaymondMasseywas impressiveasthesinisterandhorribly ugly"blacksheep,"JonathanBrewster,andPeterLorrewasadequateas Dr.Einstein,Itwasnoticeable throughout theinterpretationof characterinthefilmcloselyparalleled theactingwehadseeninthestage play.AuntAbbyovershadowedher sister,whoseservicescouldreallyhave beendispensedwith.PriscillaLane hadverylittletodo.

Inconclusion,itmaybesaidthat thefilmunderreviewisonewhich will.irritatetheonlookerbeyondenduranceorprovokeintensemerriment --accordingtoone'ssenseofhumour andtheconditionofone'sliverata giventime.Bothreactionsarein evidenceasthehugecrowdsattracted tothefilmstreamoutoftheCapitol.

Thisplay,byJacquesDeval,tellsof whatbefallsacoupleoftitledrefugees fromtheRussianRevolutionwhenthey enterdomesticserviceinParisinan efforttoescapenoticeandfindamodicumofpeaceandhappiness.The themeisnotoriginal,ofcourse,andthe playislargelyacomedy.Asremarkedsomewhereinthescript,almost everyonewhocomesoutofRussiais aGrandDuchessoraCountorsomethingofthesort.Wearequiteused totheidea.Butadeepernotecreeps intotheplaytowardstheend,when royaltymeetsrevolutionaryfaceto faceandabargainisstruckonthe onlycommongroundbetweenthetwo. Mr.WestbrookPegler,columnistfortheHearstnewspapers, wasreportedduringtheweekashavingtakentheAustralianpeopletotaskonthreescores-aslangthatwasbanalandastupid abomination,bravadoandbragging,anddependenceontheAmericansformilitaryprotection.We,asapeople,arealltooprone tobehyper-sensitiveaboutexternalcriticism,whichisalackof wisdom.Inthisinstanceitoughttobepossibletoabstractfrom thepeevishtoneofMr.Peglerandtoexaminewhetherthereis anysubstanceinhiscomplaints.Theuseofslangmaywellbe tedioustoaharassedcolumnistwho,thoughsupposedtoknow everything,isoftenenoughof"encyclopedicignorance."His life,especiallyintheStates,isoneoffeverishhasteandnaturally histemperwouldtendtofrayiftheproductionofhiscolumnwere impededbysuchaninexplicablethingasaforeignlanguage.But ifcomparisonsaretobehonest,does"WaltzingMatilda"really sufferbycomparisonwiththespateofAmerican"popularsongs"? Andisa"bum"amoretechnicalexplanationofatrampthanthe term"swaggy",Itseemsthathereisamatteroftasteinwhich therecanbenodispute.

InhischargethattheAustraliansare"abraggartlot,"Mr. Peglerisonsurerground.Thereiscertainlyastrongnationalist elementinAustralia,thoughitisprobablynotsopronouncedtodayasitwasfiftyyearsago.Thereisalsoawell-developednationalisminAmerica.Initselfthisisahealthyandinevitable manifestationofthespiritofapeople.Itbecomesadanger,however,whenexcessive,forthenitbeginstomakecomparisonswith otherpeople'stoitsownadvantage.Australiansasarulearenot muchgiventoboasting,butthereundoubtedlyexistsafairlygeneralimpressionthatwearesuperiortotheforeignerswhocometo liveinourcountry.AFederalCabinetMinistercomplainedof thisattitudeduringtheweek.Hestatedthatwedespisedorignoredforeigners,thuscausingthemtokeeptothemselves,andthen accusedthemofisolatingthemselves.Thisissomethingwewill havetogetoverifAustraliaistoacquireapopulationsufficientfor survivalBut,ontheotherhand,AustralianshavetreatedforeignersagreatdealbetterthanAmericanstreattheindigenousblack raceoftheirowncountry,andwehavenotyetreachedthebraggadociostageofdescribingouryounglandas"God'sowncountry."

ItisacoincidencethattheproblemofourantipathytoforeignersshouldbesocloselyrelatedtoMr.Pegler'sthirdcharge, thatwewereunabletodefendourselvesandhadalwaystolook toAmerica.ItistruethatwewereverygratefulforAmerican suppliesatthetimewhentheinvasionofourshoreswasimminent.'ButitisequallytruethatAustraliansandnotAmericans turnedtheJapbackovertheKokodatrail,andthusgavethefirst impetustohiseventualdefeat.Itwasnotpleasantforthiscountrytobedependentonothers,howeverwelldisposed,andwe musttakesteps(especiallyinthematterofpopulation)toprevent arecurrenceofexternalinvasioncatchingusunprepared.But America,intheachievementofherownindependence,didnotdespisetheaidoftheFrench.NorweretheAmericansinthehigh militarycommandlikeMcArthurinsensibletotheAustraliancontributiontothevictory.Wearenotundulyworried'aboutMr. Pegler'sjibes.Heissobusyandsoforgetful,andwhattherewas oftruthinhisclaimitwouldheworthwhileforustonote.Itis onlyapityhedoesn'tthinkitfittoexamineusatcloserquarters. TheCatholicsoftheArchdiocese weredeeplyshockedonMondayevening,January14,whenitwasannouncedthatFatherPhilipShannon,AssistantPriestatSt.Thomas'Church, Claremont,hadbeenkilledinalevelctossingaccidentatLeighton,He wasaccompaniedbyanotheryoung priestwhohadamiraculousescape. Theywereontheirwaytothebeach atLeighton,andapparentlydidnot observetheapproachofthetrain. Bothwerewalking,andFatherShannonwassobadlyhitandreceived suchsevereinjuriesthathewasdead onarrivalattheFremantleHospital inaSt.JohnAmbulance.

ThebodywaslaterbroughttoSt. Thomas'Church,Claremont.where,on Wednesdaymorning,January16,the SolemnRequiemOfficefortheDead andPontificalRequiemMasswere chantedforthereposeofhissoul.It wasasceneofintensepoignancyand solemnitywiththecasketlyingbefore themainaltarandtheArchbishopand Priestsinthechoir.St.Thomas' Churchwaspackedfortheobsequies, andthegreatgatheringofpriests,80 innumber,gaveeloquenttestimonyof thepopularityandesteeminwhich thedeadPriestwasheldbyclergyand laityalike.

TohissorrowingparentsinCastleblayney,whohavebeenadvisedby cableofthedreadfultragedy,Ioffer Duibehalfofallourheartfeltsympathy.Theirburdenofsorrowwill,we hope,bealleviatedbytheconsoling thoughtthatduringtheshortspanof hispastoralactivity,hewontheesteemofallwithwhomhewasassociated.TohisParishPriestandtoyou theparishionersofClaremont,weoffer tansincerecondolence.Youwill prayforhimto-dayandeveryday. Why,then,didGodcreatethe world?0)ForHisgloryand(2)for thegoodofHiscreatures.Godthen createdtheworldfirstlyforHis glory;thatmeans,withtheintention ofrevealingHisDivineattributesby visiblethingsandfirstofallHisomnipotence,wisdom,andgoodness,In thiswaytheCreationis,asitwere,an openlivingbookbeforeus,inwhich wecanreadthegreatness,thepower, thewisdom,andgloryofGod;amirrorinwhichwecanbeholdHisgreatness.ThereforethePsalmistDavid says:"Theheavensdeclaretheglory ofGod,andthefirmamentproclaims theworksofHishands."Godcreatedtheworld,secondly,forthegoodof Hiscreatures,particularlyforman's use.Oneobjectofcreationisusefultoanotherone.Forinstance, rainpromotesthegrowthofplants, andplantsserveasfoodformanand beast.Everythingthatyousee servesmanbypreferenceeitherfor hisfood,orforhisclothing,orhis health,hisservice,use,orpleasure. Mancaneventamethemostpowerfulwildanimalsandmakethemusefultohim.Butthatcreationmay continuetoexistandnotperishGod preservestheworldandgovernsit.

Saturday,January19,wasavery windydayandthisgreatlyhindered theperformancesoftheY.C.W.athleticteamatLeedervilleOval.In spiteofthis,however,goodtimeswere recordedbyBillCochrane,whowon hismilein4min.52sec.,andhis440 yardsin53.5sec.Billalsowona100 yardssprint,thusgainingatriplevictory.GerryFoleygatheredinthe mostpointsfortheteambywinning hisbroadjump,andgettingwellplacedinthe120yardshurdles,shotputt, 440yards,andjavelinthrow.These achievementsprovethatGerryisa solidall-roundathlete.Othergood athleteswereRonJeffrey,LeoHickey, andJohnDavidson,thelatterwinning adoubleinthe"C"Grade, Averypleasingfeatureoftheday wastheappearanceofmanynewbut bynomeansuntriedathletes.Among

Butonthewayhesawanamusing sight.Somehorsemenhadboiled peasfortheirhorses,andamonkey jumpeddownfromatree,seizeda handfulofpeas,climbedupagain,and begantoeat.

Onepea,however,rolledoutofhis handandtumbledtotheground.The sillymonkeylookedatitgreedily,and then,lettingalltheotherpeasfall,he climbeddownthetreeandhuntedfor theonethathadfirstdropped.But amanranafterhim,andhehadto leaveallthepeas;andheclimbedup thetreeagain,lookingasglumasa manwhohadlostakingdom.
