Inapamphlet(whichisprocurable atanyofthe"Progressive"BookdepotswhichtheCommunistsarenow runninginmostofthecapitalcities> entitled"Cdmmunism:AnOutlinefor Everyone,"byR.W.Robson,thefollowingstatementsaremadeunderthe heading"CommunismandReligion":

"ThephilosophyofMarxism,which isthebasisofCommunismtheory,is materialist.Communistshavenoprejudiceagainstreligiousbeliefs,but Communistsrespectsincereandhonest religiousbeliefs."

Thisstatementitselfisneithersincerenorhonest.Iknowthatitrepresentsthe"line"theCommunistpropagandistfinds"strategic"totake amongushereinAustraliaatthemoment.ButitisthedirectcontradictionofCommunistteachingfromMarx downtoComradeSharkey,thepresent "bigboss"ofthepartyinAustralia.

TheCommunistshererealisethatat presentthesentimentoftheoverwhelmingmajorityofdemocraticAustraliansisstronglyinfavourof"freedomofconscience"asanessentialprincipleofdemocraticsociety.Toadmit openlythattheyarecommittedtoa programmewhichseekstofightand destroyallreligion,theRedsknow quitewellwouldmaketheirprogramme moredifficultto"getacross"tothe massestheywanttoreach.They knowcertainlythatasfarasCatholic workersareconcernedthisisquite enoughinitselftofinishtheCommunistcause,

TheCommuniststhereforefindit notexpedientatpresenttospeakthe truthonthismatter.

But,alasfortheirsincerityandhonesty,wehaveirrefutabledocumentary evidencetoprovethattheirrealpro-.grammeaimsatthedestructionofall religion.

1.11Communistswilladmitthat"CritiqueoftheGothaProgramme,"by Kyr!Marx,isanauthoritativeexpositionoftheprinciplesofCommunism. Vettherehedenounces"religiousfreedomofconscience"asa"bourgeois" ideaanddemandsthathistruedisciplesmust"aimatfreeingthemindfrom all;hehobgoblinsofreligion."

Sydney"CommunistReview," -inOctober,1937,madeitplainthatour localReds'attitudeisthesameasthat ofKarlMarx.Forthere(p55)you willreadthesewords:"TheCommunist?attitudeis,andremains,that'religionistheopiumofthepeople,'and thatourpartyaimsfinallytofreethe consciencefromthereligiousspook.

Naturally,Communistparentscannot evaderesponsibilityforclearingtheir children'smindsofthehobgoblinsof religion.'Itisatrifledifficulttoreconcilethisstatementfromanofficial CommunionpublicationinSydney withComradeRobson'spublicationin Sydneythat"Communistsrespectsincereandhonestreligiousbeliefs.

ButthesamearticleIhavejust BootedfromtheSydney"Communist Review"goesontoexplainthatwhile thepartyisoutfinallytooverthrowall religion,yetitiswiseto"soft-pedal" onthisaimofCommunism. What followsismostinterestingand"letsthe catoutofthebag" andhow!

"Whenweconsider,"saysthe"Corn monistReview,""(alverylargeportionoftheAustralianpopulationthat consistsofIrishCatholicworkingpeople:(b)thesplendidhistoricalrole playedbyIrishCatholicsinthefight forfreedominAustralia;(c)thevery strongCatholicinfluenceintheA.L.P.; and(d)thehardfactthatourap proachtothisvitallyimportantsectionofthepeopleisstillamongstthe poorestofallourCommunistactivities-whenweconsiderthesethingsit mustbesaidatoncethatwewill neglectanyopportunity,however slight,ofimprovingourcontactwith ourCatholicfellows(andtherebytakingpreliminarystepstobuildthe party)onlyatourperil."

Sothereyouhaveit!Itisnotwise justforthepresentfortheRedpropagandiststolaymuchstressontheir finalaimoftheoverthrowofourreligion....Thatcancomeinduecourse oftime.Theirpresentaimmustbe totraptheignorantorunsuspecting CatholicintothinkingthattheReds arenotsuchdreadfulfellowsasthe priestshavemadethemouttobe thatthey,doinfact"respectsincere andhonestreligiousbeliefs" and thereisnogoodreasonwhytheycan notbeonthebestoftermswithus andwithour"hobgoblins"!!!"Inthe Unions,"writesComradeL.Sharkeyin hishook,"TheTradeUnions"(July, 1944),"arevariousgroupssuchasCatholics.Ourpolicyisnottoattack theCatholicreligion,buttowinthe bigmajorityofCatholicworkersfora working-classpolicy."(p.50.)

TheremayindeedbesomeCatholics whoaredupedbytacticsoftheReds TheremaybesomeCatholicswhoare ignorantofwhathastakenplacein Russia,iriMexico,inSpainduringthe lastfewdecadeswhenourbishopsand priestshavebeenbrutallymurdered andtheirbodiesevenmoreshockingly

treatedthanwasMussolini'sbodyby theRedsofMilanjustrecently.There maybeCatholicswhohavereadvery littleanddonotknowthe"technique" ofRedRevolution:whodonotknow thatinthoselandswheretheReds havegottheirwayevenforashort time,asinMexicoandSpain,thebarbarityofthepersecutionoftheFaith exceededthatofNeroofoldandshoweditselfassomethingthatcanbeinspiredonlybySatanhimself.In Spain,forinstance,thebodiesof priests,aftertheyhadbeenmurdered, werehackedintopiecesandhung"for sale"betweenpigs'headsinthebutchers'shops.

TheremaybeCatholicswhoknow nothingofthesethings,orthinkthat theyarebetterinformedthanthose whoknowaboutthemandbelieve them.ButsuchCatholicsarefew.Yet eventhosefewCatholicswhohold suchviewssurelywouldnotbelieve thatourHolyFatherthePopewould writelikesomemodernjournalistin extravaganttermsjustforthesakeof n'i'rinceffect.Surelyeventhosefew CatholicswouldknowthatthePope weighseverywordhewritesandevery judgmenthemakescalmlyanddeliberately,andwiththoroughlyreliable evidencetoguidehim.Yetthelate HolyFather,PopePiusXI.,inhisencyclicalon"AtheisticCommunism." declaresthattheCommunistpersecutionoftheChurchinrecentyears"exceedsinamplitudeandviolenceanythingyetexperiencedinthepreceding persecutionslaunchedagainstthe Church,"And,referringtoSpain,he writesoftheindiscriminateslaughter ofbishops,ofthousandsofpriestsand religiousofbothsexes,andsaysthat allofthishasbeencarriedout"with hatredandsavagebarbarityonewould nothavebelievedpossibleinourage."

MostassuredlyweCatholicspreferto acceptthewordoftheHolyFather ratherthanthatofComradeRobsonor ComradeSharkey.Andweknowwhat toexpectifCommunismswingsinto theascendentherein'Australia.The Catholicschoolswhichcostussixty millionpoundstobuildandmaintain willbeclosedovernight:ourchildren willhetaughtthehateofGodandof theFaithofourFathers:ourpriests andpeoplewillbemurderedintheir thousands.forweareofaFaiththat throughthecenturieshascostrivers ofbloodasthepriceofourloyaltyto it.TheCommunistcausewillnever triumphhereinAustraliabeforeour Continentissoakedfromcoastto

coastwiththebloodofitsCathol people.

WeknowwhattoexpectfromCommunism.Butitisnopartofour Faithtoawaitthehourofsuchpersecutioninfatalisticresignation.We mustmeetthemenacehereandnow andanticipatethe"AedDawn"by tirelesslyteachingtherealnatureof CommunismandbylabouringtoremovethosesocialevilsonwhichCommunismthrives,

InthetownofBethlehemonefinds alifewhichonedoesnotseemto findelsewhereintheHolyLand,The spirit,andeventheblood,oftheCrusadersisstilltobetracedthere;itis claimedthatmanyofitsinhabitants aretheirdescendants,whichaccounts forthedecidedlystrikingfeaturesof thepeopleoneseesinthestreets.They number,perhaps,someeightthousand. abouthalfoftheseareLatinChristians.notquitesomanybelongto theGreekOrthodoxChurch;therest. Armenians,Copts,Syrians,Protestants andMoslems,makeupaboutfivehundred.HenceBethlehemistheone ChristianspotinPalestine,exceeding evenNazareth.thoughit,ton,rightly callsitselfChristian.

PeculiarDress.

ThewomenofBethlehemhavea dresspeculiartothemselves,which makesthemdistinguishableanywhere: wemayrememberhowmuchChestertondwellsonthisinperhapsthebest ofallhisbooks,"TheNewJerusalem." Theyareabusypeople.Apartfrom thecultivationofthecrib.andthe herdingofsheepandgoats,manyare engagedinmakingsouvenirsofone kindoranotherconnectedwiththe ChurchoftheNativity;cribs,figures ofOurLordandOurLady,ornamentalarticlesofallkindsarecarvedfrom .olivewood,orthemotherofpearl broughtfromtheRedSea,orfromthe basaltoftheneighbourhood.

Thereisonemainstreetrunningup themiddleofthetown,herdwith shops.mostofthempreparedtorater forpilgrimsfromwherevertheymay come. BasilicaofNativity.

Naturally,wewishtoknowthe hiefmarksofCatholicBethlehem: andfirst,ofcourse,comesthegren` BasilicaoftheNativity,Itison ourleftasweenterthetownfrom Jerusalem,themainpartofthecity beinguptheslopeonourright.It isdividedintothreesections;themain partbelongstothe'Greeks,aparton thelefttotheLatins.Thecaveof

theNativityisbeneaththeGreek highaltar;itisenteredbyastaircase fromtheGreekside,andoneleavesit bystepsintotheLatinchurch.Insidethecavewehaveonlytimeto mentionthetwomainaltars;one,on theleftasoneenters,belongingtothe Greeks,onthefloorofwhichshinesa vermilionstar,withthewordsround it:"HicdeVirgineMariaJesusChristusnatusest,"Roundthestar,day andnight,burnfifteenlamps,four providedbytheLatins,fivebythe Armenians,sixbytheGreeks. LatinAltar.

Itisworthnoticingthatthoughthe Greekshavepossessionofthetltar, andallownoLatinpriesttouseit, neverthelesstheLatininscriptionunderneathproclaimstowhomitoriginallybelonged.Afewstepsfromthis shrine,onthespotwheretradition placedthemanger,istheLatinaltar. Connectedwiththegrottoorcave oftheNativityareothercaves,thatof St.Jerome,forinstance;butwehave notimetostayunderground.We cameupthroughtheLatinchapelto theconventoftheFranciscanFathers, whoprovideduswithbreakfastin theirCasaNuova;theGreeksandArmenianshavealsoconventsattached tothebasilica.Fromtheflatroof abovetheirbuildingonemaygaina splendidviewofthewholetown,and ofthesteepclescenteastwards.towardtheDeadSea.

FranciscanConvent.

Lookingfirstinthatdirectionone seesbelow,closetothefield,called oftheShepherds,alittlechapeland conventbelongingtotheFranciscan MissionariesofMary,thosedevoted nunswhohavespreadthemselveson themissionsallovertheworld.There theyhaveadispensary.aworkroom, andotherthings;whatever,inother 'cords,theyneedforwhatGodwants themtodo.Turninground,andlookingwestwardupthetown,wesee closetoustheparochialschoolfor girlsconductedbytheSistersofSt. Joseph;inanotherpartofthetown theyalsohaveaninfantschoolandan orphanage.Higher,13thestreeton theleftistheboys'school:itisin thehandsoftheSalesianFathers, whoseestablishmentisindeedworthy ofSt.JohnBosco.Herethereisnot onlyanelementaryschool;thereis alsoanorphanage,atechnicalschool towhichvarioustradesaretaught, andotherthingsbesides.Thebelfry oftheSalesiansettlementisoneof 'heornamentsofBethlehem, 'ChristianBrothers.

Thesetwoschoolsprovidle,asit were,thefirstessentialsofeducation tothelittletown.Buttheyarenot all.Uponthehilltotheleftaswe lookacrosstheinhabitedquarterisa largeestablishmentoftheChristian Brothers.Here,inadditiontotheir school,theyhavealsoanovitiate.A 'ittlebelowthemtheSistersofCharityofSt.VincentdePaulareconspicuousintheirfamiliarwhiteheaddressandbusiness-likeblue.Here theyservethechiefhospitalofthe townand,inaddition,haveanorphanageandacreche.

Lastly,ifwelooksouthwards,ona hillseparatedfromthetownbya gullyistheConventoftheSacred HeartofBethlehem,whosepresence seemstolinkBethlehemupwith Lourdes;andclosetothem,aloneand still,isaCarmeliteConvent,uniting BethlehemwiththememoryofSt. ThereseoftheChildJesus.Those

are,ortillrecentlywere,thechiefinstitutionsoftheLatinCatholics.There arealsoaboys'schoolandagirls' schoolbelongingtotheOrthodox Greeks;anotherschoolforArmenians; theProtestantSocietyofBerlinhave aschoolforboysandgirls,andthere isagirls'schoolstaffedbyanEnglish ProtestantMission.

CommonHomage.

Henceitwouldseemthatmodern Bethlehemisfairlywellprovidedt itisingreatcontrastwithdescriptions oftheplacewrittenonlyhalfacenturyago.Itistruethatthereis stillfrictionbetweenonesectandanother:soldiers,andtheseMoslem,still, evenundertheBritishmandate,keep guardwithinthecaveoftheNativity, lestoneorothersectcometoblows withanother.Buteventhisisless thanitwasonlyafewyearsback. ThelampsroundthespotoftheNativity,Latin,GreekandArmenianside byside,areaneloquentactofcommonhomagetothePrinceofPeace,.

Thetroublesintheworldto-clay arehavingtheirnecessaryreactionsin Palestine,andnotleastinBethlehem. FormerlyRussiansandArmenians werebyfarthemostnumerouspilgrims;nowtheyhavedwindleddown toalmostnone.Thereisgrowingup afeelingofgreatermutualsympathy andtolerance:onemayalmostdare tohopethatinBethlehem,where Christwasborn,thenewunitedChristendomwillyetbebornagain, Prophecy.

Forthatitwillbebornagainwho candoubt?"Blessedarethemeek, fortheyshallinherittheearth."In ahundredwaystheMan,"meekand humbleofheart,"whowasbornin humbleBethlehem,repeatedthisprophecy,andnoprophecyhasproved moretrue.Indeed,thestoryofBethlehemisitselfaprophecy,anassuranceofthefutureWemaylook backonthestorythathasbeenoutlinedintheseshortsketches,andrecognisethesignificanceofitall.

Whereintheworldisthereabirthplaceofanymansosacred,sohonouredbythewholeraceofmen,asthe caveandthetownwhereinwasborn thatSonofDavid,whoconcentrated inHimselfallthehistoryofthepast, thepromisetoAdamintheGarden, thevisionofJacob,theprophetthat wastocomeforeseenbyMoses,the successorsungbyDavidhimself,who wouldtransformhisthroneintoarule ofalltheworldandmakeofitakingdomthatwouldneverend?Bethlehem,whichhasalwaysbeen,andstill is,"alittleoneamongthethousands ofJuda,"astheprophetdescribedit morethantwothousandfivehundred yearsago;yetwhichretainstothis day,aloneinalltheworld,thelasting memoryoftheMakerofourcivilisation.

MonumentStands.

Constantinelaidthefoundationof Europe;healsobuilttheChurchin Bethlehem.Allhisotherworkshave beenscattered;hismonumentinBethhelemstillstands.OtherEmperors andkingshavefollowedhim,and theirbuildingshaveperished;others haveadornedtheshrineoftheChild ofBethlehem,andtheirmemoryisstill notforgotten.ThekingdomofBaldwininJerusalemhaslongbeenswept away;forsomemysteriousreasonthe powerthatdestroyedithasnotdestroyedthesiteofthebirthofthe KingofKings.

Evento-day,whilewehearoftroubleinJerusalem,butsixmilestothe north,oftroubleinHebronadozen milestothesouth,Bethlehemsuffers nomorethanthereactionsfromthese.

Insteadtheregathertheremenof

everynationunderheaven,differingin creed,differingaseastandwestonly candiffer,yetallofthemseeking unionwiththeChildofBethlehem,and inHimandthroughHimwithone another.

Significance.

ThisisthesignificanceofBethlehemto-day,anditcontainsaprophecy forthefuutre.Itisarepetitionof thatprophecy,made750yearsbefore thatChildwasborn:

Besidesthesenegativeattributes-negativebecausetheydenyanylimitationinGod-whichhelptomakexi?,understandtheinfinitedifferencebetween theCreatorandthecreature,thereare positiveattributes,whichpredicateof ourheavenlyFathercertainperfections. suchasgoodness,wisdom,mercy,justiceandholiness.

God'sgoodness,asweshallnowconsiderit,isnoneotherthanHislorefor creaturesThereis,ofcourse.inHim thatnaturalgoodnesswhichflowsfrom theinfiniteperfectionofHisnature, andthemoralgoodness,whichisbut anothertermforHissanctity;butitis whatthetheologianscalltherelative goodnessofGodthathasforusapeculiarstrengthofappeal,forthatisthe goodnesswhichcharacterisesHisrela-

tionswithus.Thisdivinegoodness showsitselfinmanyways.Itmanifestsitselfinacts,asinthebenign workingofnaturallaws,andthenwe 'tGod'sbeneficence;itisbut anothernameforgrace,whichisthe divinegoodnessbestowingsupernatural 'nundeservingcreatures.As liberality,itdispensesitsbenefitswithoutstint;clothedinthegarmentsofpatienceandlong-sufferingitdelaysto punishthewicked.Underthenameof mercyitsuccoursthewretched,andas lemencyremitssinandthepunishmentdueit.Godsinfinitegoodness ut mercywaituponoureverystep. NotonlydotheSacredScripturesassureusagainandagainthatGodhas doneallthingswiselyandwell,but thatHeistheverysourceofallwis. dom."AllwisdomisfromtheLord God,andbathbeenalwayswithhim, andisfromalltime.""Ifanyoneof youwantwisdom,lethimaskitof God'whogivethtoallmenabundantly anditshallbegivenhim." Weareapttobeveryforgetfulof thisattributeofourMaker.Menin theirfollyarecontinuallypassingjudgmentonthewisdomofGod.Theirexperienceteachesthemthattheyare constantlymakingmistakeswhenthey attempttojudgetheactionsoftheir fellowmen.Theyfindthatthereare numberlessthingsthathavegoneto directaman'smotivesthattheyare ignorantof,andwhichwhenthey

learn,causethemtoreversetheirdecision,buttheorderlygovernmentof theUniversebyHimwhoholdsitin thehollowofHishand,iscondemned offhand,ifnotinsomanywords,yetby arebelliousquestioningthatislittle shortofblasphemous.Inouregoism wethinkthattheendswehaveinview arethosewhichGodshouldwishto haveaccomplished.Werealisethat thechildisincapableofgraspingtheintentionsofauadult,separatedfromit bysomefewyears,yet,inpracticeat least,wethinkourselvesabletoform anappreciationofthemotivesthatactuatetheinfiniteandeternalGod.

ThewholehistoryofGod'sdealings withmanshowsman'sinabilityto graspthewisdomofGod'sways,yet theknowledgeofthishistoryhasnot theeffectontheindividualheartwhich itshouldhave.Againandagainithas beenshownthatwhatweoftheworld deemfollyandweakness-arethevery wisdomandstrengthofGod.TheweaknessofBethlehemandthefollyofCalvaryhaverenewedthefaceofthe -th +,-,estrengthofthatweaknessmyriadshavefacedcheerfully deathbytortureorthemoresubtle martyrdomoflivesofself-denial.In thewisdomofthatfollyGod'smessengershaveoverturnedandbroughtto naughtthemostcarefullyplannedayeit-,-ouchthisfoolishnessoftheMostHigh,havereareda structurethathaswonthereverentad0-o,greatestmindsofevery age.Suchisthehistoryoftheestablishmentandcontinuanceofourreligion,yetthisgreatlessonhassmalleffectinlesseningourcomplaintsofwhat wedonotunderstandintheworking outofGod'spromises.Westillcontinuetomurmuragainstthesorrows anddisappointmentsthatareaddingto ourspiritualstature,andmakingusin verydeedchildrenofGod.Weadmit thatChrist'slifeonearthwasademonstrationofdivinewisdom,butcan notrealisethatwe,Hisbrethren,should comeunderthesamewiselawofsuffering:TheotherattributesofGodwe -o-rent,motiestioningly,and,though wewouldshrinkinhorrorfromanyexpressionofdoubtregardingGod'swisdom:yetbyourunwillingnesstobe guidedbyHislaws.andbyourlackof submissiontothedivinewill,wequestionthewisdomofourheavenlyFather andtheefficiencv_ofHisgovernment. True,itislackoffaiththatunderlies thismistrust.Didwehavearealising.. senseofwhatweprofess.ourhearts wouldbefilledwiththatperfectpeace whichflowsfromanabsolutereliance uponthewisdomofalovingFather.

Wenowcometotheconsideration ofthejusticeofGod.Justiceisof twokinds,onewhichrenderstoanother hisdue,givessomethingforvaluereceived,andtheother,whichrewards andpunishesasubjectaccordingto thatsubject'sdeserts.

Itisevidentthatjusticeinthefirst sensecannotbepredicatedofGod, since,strictlyspeaking,Hecanreceive nothingfromus,forallwehaveisalreadyHis.ToHim,however,belongs retributivejustice,thejusticewhichrewardsandpunishes."Thouartjust, OLord,"saysTobias,"andallthy judgmentsarejust,andallthyways mercyandtruthandjudgment."An. St.Paulexclaims:"Thereislaidup formeacrownofjustice,whichthe Lord,thejustjudge,willrendertome inthatday."Indeed,thereisacry inthehumanheartthatproclaims moreloudlythananyexternaltestimony,theexistenceofajustGod.The intertwiningofthethreadsofgoodand evilinthewarpandwoofofhuman lifedemands,wefeel,theunravelling handofajustandomnipotentBeing.

Sometimeswearefrightenedatthe thoughtofGod'sjustice.Itis,in truth,adreadthought,butnottheterrifyingthingourignorancewouldmake it.Tothegeneralmind,justiceissomethinghardandformal,arigidandliteralapplicationoflam'tosomeparticu-

Perhapsthemustarrestingindicationofthemomentastohow fartheMoscowcrawlhasdevelopedamongtheGreatPowersis therevivalofthecampaignagainstSpain.Mostinappropriately, thepresentagitationappearstohaveoriginatedwiththeFrench Government,forhasditnotbeenfortheFrench,nun-intervention mighthavebecomearealityintheSpanishCivilWar.Butthe French,withfullGovernmentconnivance,keepthebordercontinuouslyopenfortheentryofRussianagentsandRussianmoney. ItwasinFrance,too,thattheinfamousInternationalBrigadewas recruitedandequipped.AfterthedefeatofthepuppetRussian GovernmentinSpain,mostoftheleaderscrossedintoFrance wheretheyhelpedontheinternaldecayofthatunhappycountry, addingtothedissensionandfifth-columnactivitywhichmadeit fallsoeasyapreytotheNaziaggression.Thoseleaderswho hadattemptedtosellSpainwouldprovenomoreloyaltoFrance, forthespiritualhomeofthemallwasMoscow.Andifthere weresuchathingasinternationaljusticethesemenshouldstand theirtrialasamongthedeepest-dyedwarcriminalsinsteadof beingencouragedtoreviveaninternationalconspiracyagainsta nationwhichonceandforalldefeatedaforeignplotbyforceof arms.

TheBritishandAmericanGovernmentscutsorryfiguresin theirrepliestotheFrenchNote.Bothexpressdislikeofthe Francoregime,butthatisofnogreatconsequenceastheSpanish peoplehavenogreatcordialitytowardspeoplewhosatidlyby whentheyfoughtforthepreservationofEuropefromanarchy. ItmaynotunjustlybereckonedthattheBritishandAmericans quitewelcomedtheSpanishinterludeasbeingsufficientlyinflammatory(thankstotheliesoftheworldpress)todistractpublic attentionfromtheircompleteineptituderegardingtherestofEurope.TheirprofesseddesiretoseeFranco'sregimereplacedby astable,democraticgovernmentattheearliestpossiblemoment wouldringmoregenuinelyiftheyhadfirstarrangedstable,democraticregimesinPolandandYugoslavia,Ofallnations Franceshouldbetheverylasttotalkofstability.Regarding economicpressureagainstSpain,itwasreportedthatBritain wouldhavetoconsidermostcarefullywhethersuchmethods wouldAffectthepositionoftheSpanishpeopleratherthanofthe FrancoGovernment.That,ofcourse,issheerhypocrisy.Britain,receivingfoodparcelsfromAustraliaandelsewhere,isinno positiontoapplyeconomicsanctions.WhatBritainwouldhave toconsiderishowaneconomicblockadeofSpainwouldaffectthe foodsuppliesoftheBritishIsles.Itisanidenticalreasonwith herforebearancewithEire.

ThestrengthofFranco'spositionwasdemonstratedbythe toneofhisreplytothe"calumniesfromabroad"andbytheenthusiasticsupportoftheCortes.Heveryneatlyrecalledthe mealy-mouthedpledgesoftheAlliesrelatingtothesovereign rightsofindependentpeoplesandremindedtheAlliedCourts, nowsittinginrighteousjudgmentinEurope,oftheenormousloot inSpanishgoldandjewelswhichweresenttoRussiabyNegrin. Itismypleasuretopresentyou withareviewoftheschoolyear. Beforedoingso,Iwouldliketoexpressmygratitude,aswellasthatof thestaffandboys,athavingtheirExcellencieswithusthisevening.We makefrequentdemandsonSirJames' time,butneverhasheshownanything butwillingnessand,indeed,eagerness, toaccommodateus.

Thisyearbroughtamajorchange inthestaffoftheCollege.'Brother Garvey,whoforthreeyearshadguidedtheprogressoftheCollege,wasappointedtotheheadmastershipof Aquinas.DuringhistermatC.B.C., BrotherGarveyendearerhimselfto elsparentsandboysalikebyhiskindly mannerandefficientmanagement Moreover,facedwiththetaskofpilotingtheCollegethroughyearswhen Australiawasindangerfromtheinvader,hisworkwasnoteasy;yet,between1942and1944,therollcallincreasedby200,andthisyearpassed the400mark.WecongratulateBrotherGarveyinthisoutstandingachievementandwishhimeverysuccess atAquinas.
