WeallknowthatthepresentCapitalisticsystemhasagreatdealwrong withit.Butwedonotwanttoget outofthefryingpanintothefire.And wewanttoknowafewthingsabout thesystemtheCommunistisofferingto replaceit.

Inthemidstofthegeneralrejoicing amongAustralianCatholicsthatthe HolyFatherhadseenfittohonourthe ChurchinAustraliabytheappointmeatofArchbishopGilroytotheSacred'CollegeofCardinals,cameone jarringnote,andthatfromnolessa personthantheMinisterforInformationandImmigration(Mr.Calwell). BeforeIgoontoconsidertheextraordinaryoutburstofthisgentleman,I ispertinenttoaskwhether theappointmentofaCardinalisapoliti-aiissueinvolvingtheAustralian Government,orapurelydomestic questionwithintheChurch.Ifitis thelater,thenMr.Calwell,inaddition tohighlyoffensivepersonalattacksis gillvalsoofimpertinenceandinsularity(thelatterbeingaverygreathandic"nintheMinistryforImmigration).
ThejealousyexistingbetweenSydneyandMelbourneisasproverbialas thatbetweenBathurstandOrange hutitwillbeasorrydayforthe Churchifthatrivalryisallowedto entereriouslyintoecclesiastical affairs.For"theChurch,"asthe HolyFathersaidinhisworldbroadcastonChristmasEve,''introubled timeslikethesemustmorethanever remainabovenationalfeelings."Finvi muchmoresomustSheremainabwe inter-Statebickerings?ButitW0.5 nottheChurchnorthechurchmen whocommencedthepresentdissension,butapoliticianwhoissupposed toberepresentingthenationalinter eat.
Mr.Calwellopenedhistiradeby arrogatingtohimselfthatprerogative oftheHolySeewhichwaswrested fromthecivilpowerafteralongan,-1 bitterstrugglebythegreatHilde. brand.Thecardinalitialhonour,h.:. claimed,"rightlybelongstothegreat ArchbishopofMelbourne(Dr.Mannix)."Now,noAustralianCatholic isinsensibleoftheenormousinfluence whichthevenerableArchbishopof Melbournehaswieldedforgoodin bothChurchandState,andnoone sec-,elh"moreembarrassedandpainedbyMr.Calwell'soutragethanhe. If,astheMinisterforInformation claims.thehonourshouldhavebeen awardedaccordingtoseniority,he mustseethattheseniorityofSeesisa moreimportantconsiderationthanthe ageofindividuals.IfaRedHatis togotoEngland,itnaturallygoesto theSeeofWestminster,iftoIrelandto theSeeofArmagh,iftoPortugalto theSeeofLisbon.Itis,therefore, entirelyappropriatethattheAustra lienawardshouldbemadetothe MotherSeeofSydney.Itisreally -amazingthattheMinisterforInfermat'onshouldnotheuptodatein suchanimportantpointofecclesiasticalprocedure.
However,inhispursuitofthetallest poppies,Mr.Calwellhasthrowndiscretiontothewinds.HisattackcommencesontheHolySeeitself.Not onlyhasamistakebeenmadeinthe allocationofthehonour,butitisa "longoverduedistinctiononanAustralian."HereagainMr.Calwell'sin. formationissadlyinarrears,asitis onlyinveryrecentyearsthattheappointmentofAustraliansexclusively totheepiscopalofficehasbeenapplied.Thatthisprocedureistherule t i,duein-thefirstplacetothe Vatican'sinsistenceonanativeclergy andinthesecondtothevigourwith whichthispolicyhasbeencarriedout byArchbishopPanico-"whoseability andlimitedknowledgeofAustralia andAustralianshadill-fittedhimto influencethedestiniesoftheAustralian Church."OnefanciesMr.Calsiell's ownknowledgeofthesemattersmay bemorelimitedthanheimagines,especiallyifhereallybelievesthatthe appointmentofanAustralianandan Anzacwillcause"widespreadconster- '"nationandbitterresentment"among (AustralianCatholics,Evenfora 'wizardlikeMr.Calwellitwouldbea problemtocreateacardinalwhom noneorfewoftheAustraliancapital 'swereheldlwAustralians.Unless,ofcourse,wearetoreverttoa systemofacclamation,ledinthisinstancebycheer-leaderCalwell.
lbOnesympathisesandconcurswith Mr.Calwell'sadmirationandaffection forArchbishopMannix.Heholdsa .uniqueplaceintheheartsofAustra-
1,anCatholics,butitwouldbeadubioushonourtoburdenthevenerable Archbishopof81yearswiththeadditionalresponsibilitiesofthecardinalitialoffice.
ThenfollowstheattackontheApostolicDelegate,whichrevealsthe clovenhrof.ItisnotsomuchadmirationofDr.Mannix,itappears,as contemptforDr,Panico,whichhas stungMr.Calwellintovituperation. Withoutanyknowledgeofwhathas happenedback-stage.itlooksasifthe MinisterforInformationmighthave hadhisknucklesrappedinthepast andwasonlytoodelightedtohave theopportunityofariposte.Other. wiseitisdifficulttoexplaintheintensenoteofvenominhisreferences totheApostolicDelegate.HisinsinuationthattheVaticanHADtodependonHisExcellency"duringthe waryears"amoun'stosheercalumny. Dr.PanicohasbeenApostolicDele. gatesince1935,andpreviouslyhada distinguisheddiplomaticcareerinColumbia,theArgentine,Prague,BaVaria, andtheSaar.EvenMr.Calwellwould admitthatthatwasafairrovingcommissionforanincompetent!
However,despiteMr.Calwell'sresentmentoftheappointmentofan Australianasacardinal,heproceeds atoncewithdelightfulinconsequence todemandanAustralianasApostolic Delegate.HehopesArchbishopPanicowillberecalledsoontoRomeand thatsomeonewhowilltakeproper noireofMr.Calwellwillbeappointedinhisstead.Iftherewereany needofareplytothiskind,ofinsolenceitwouldsimplybe-"Youmind yourbusinessandNellmindours" ReallyMr.Calwellwouldhavenokick comingifArchbishopPanicopublicisedhisviewsonthenextCabinetappointment.Butif,asMr.Calwellbe1;,..-estheVaticandiplomaticservice islackinginwisdom.nooneatleast cancomplainofitsunfailingcouttesy, goodtasteandsenseoftheappropriate.
TheHolyFather,farmorerealistic. allythanthepoliticalleadersofthe world,hasvoicedthehopesandthe fearsofthecommonmaninhis ChristmasEvebroadcast.TheBig ThreearebusyatMoscowformulatingbilateralandtripartitearrangementsforpeacetreatieswithcertain Europeannations,ButtheHoly FatherinRome,viewingthe'world withthatstrangecombinationof supra-nationaldetachmentandhuman sympathy,asksandanswers:Isthis yettruepeace?No,itisbutapostwarphase."Nothingperhapssovividlyillustratestheabyssthatdivides theChristianandthesecularistview oflifeasthatoftheissueofworld peace..ThePopeinsistsagainand againthatpeacemusthaveamoral basis."Peaceistheworkofjustice." ButGeneralMarshall,reportingtothe UnitedStatesGovernment,claims: "PeaCecanonlyhemaintainedbythe strong."Whataprospectforthe 'worldForarmedstrengthhasbeen andisnotthebasisofpeace,butthe breedinggroundofambitionandthe lustforpower.Itisthestrongand nottheweakwhomakewars.
antagonismbroodsoverthemthe GreatPowersmaymerelybesowing thedragonseedsofanother,moreterribleconflict.Itissoeasytotalk ofjusticeandcharity,andsodifficult topractisethem.Itisparticularly difficultfortheinternationalpolitician whohasbeenrearedintheMacchiavellienatmosphere,whereexpediency paysbetterdividendsthanmoralprinciples.Justiceisasimpleandpleasantmatterwhenitcomprisesdemandingasarightwhatisduetooneself. Thefeastwekeepto-daycallsto mindChrist'sfirstsheddingofblood, andthebestowalonHimoftheholy pameofJesus,i,e.,Saviour.Therite cCircumcisionhadasacramental characteramongsttheJews.Catholic writersholdthatthisriteremittedoriginalsin,thusimparting-grace,notin itself,butthroughthefuturemeritsof Christ.Itwasinthiswayatypeof Baptism,cleansingthesoul,notby water,butinone'sownblood.The ritewaschosenasasymbolofthealfianceorcovenantbetweenGodand Nispeople.TheyenteredintoGod's familyornation,undertakingtosuffer fortheirsins,bysheddingtheirblood; andinreturn,Godundertook,asit were,tosendaRedeemerorMessias, whoshouldreconcilethemtoHimself, andsopurchasetheirredemptionby sheddingHis'Bloodinatonementfor sin.ThusitbecameaJewishsacrament,securingtheforgivenessofsin, throughtheprevisionofthemeritsof thepromisedSaviour.OverandbeyondContrition,rightlycalledtheCircumcisionoftheheart,wereasonably inferfromGod'sknownmercyand goodness,inpromisingaSaviour,the existenceofsomeoutwardriteorsymbol,operativethroughHismerits,for theremissionofsininbothsexes. Nottha'theritewasunknownbeforethedaysofthisholypatriarch. 4141maybeseenfromamuraltabletin theruinedtempleofKarnac.itwas practisedbytheancientEgyptiansas farbackasfourteencenturiesbefore Christ,andwasknowntopeoplesas farapartastheancient'AztecsofMexicoandthemodernKaffirsofAfrica. Itsantiquityisdenotedbythefact thattiptillrecently,amongsttheJews, itwasperformedwithastoneinstrument.Thus,aritecommontoother nations,wasmadethebasisofaCON'. enantwithAbraham,justasthenaturalphenomenonoftherainbowwas madethesymbolofGod'spromiseto Noe.Circumcisionwasperformedby thefatherofthechild,andsometimes evenbythemother(Exod.iv.,25),so thatOurLadymayhavewitnessedin agonythefirstsheddingoftheprecious BloodinthecaveofBethlehem,ason Calvaryshebeheldthelast.

ItmarkedoffthepeopleofGodasa nati"..apart.Theuncircumcisedwere (-.tofffromcommunionwiththoseso favoured;thisriteadmittingthemto ashareintheblessingsandprivileges exclusivelyreservedtothechildrenof Abraham.Hence,convertsfromthe surroundingnations,onseekingadmittanceintothereligionofIsrael,hadto submittoit.Sodistinctivewascircumcisionofthenameandnationof theJewsthatoneofthemaindifficultiesoftheChurch,inApostolictimes, wastheprotectionoftheGentileconvertsagainstthetyrannyofsubjection tothispainfulrite.St.Paulstoodalmostaloneinclaimingforthem"the libertyofthechildrenofGod,""the freedom"fromtheritualoftheold law,"wherewithChristhasmadeus free."
Asatribalmark,circumcisionwasa typeandemblemofBaptism.The narrowHebrewcovenantwithAbrahamwasmergedintotheworld-wide covenantwithChrist,andwearenow washedinthewatersofBaptism-
typically,theBloodofChrist,aswere theJewsincircumcision."Fromstones GodcanraiseupchildrentoAbraham." (Actsii.38).Unlikecircumcision, whichimpresseditsmarkmerelyon theflesh,theholybaptismalritebrands ourverysoulswiththeindeliblespiritualmarkcalledcharacter.Nothing caneffacethissignoftheSonofGod. itisnoteworthythatOurLordwas circumcisedontheeighthdayafter birth,andreceivedHisname,justas ourchildrenareadmittedintothe Church,andnamed,ataboutthesame interval.OurLordwasnotboundby alaw,ofwhich,He,asGod.wasthe framer.Sinless,andspecklessasman. Heneededneithertype,norreality offorgivenessandcleansingawayof sin,yettosetusanexample,of"fulfillingalljustice,"ofsubmittingtoall justlawsbindingonsinners,Hechose tosubmitbothtothecircumcisionof Hisnationandtothebaptismof John.Hethus,bycircumcision,becameafullsonoflAbraham-assuming,notmerelytheprivileges,butthe sacrificesandobligationsofhistribe. Inthismanner,"Himwhoknewno sin,"he(God)"hathmadesinforus, thatwemightbemadethejusticeof Godinhim(2Cos.v.21).
We,too,havemadeacompactor covenant,withGod,inBaptism.He isevertruetoHispromise.Arew' truetoours?Letusnotforgetthat tosecureourprivilegesandclaims,as sonsofGodand"heirstothepromise,"wemustfulfilourdutiesassons andheirs.WhenOurLordsaw NathanielforthefirsttimeHeexclaimed:"ThisisatrueIsraelitein whomthereisnoguile."Couldlie saythesameofus,who,throughthe portalsofBaptism,haveenteredinto theChurch,thenewIsraelofGod?Do wekeepourcovenant,i.e.,thepromise madebyuswhenwereceivedthecame andtribal-markofthechildrenofGod?
II.Again,manyplacetheoriginof theriteofCircumcisioninthededicationofthepersontoone'sGodbya sortofsacrificialact;andsuchitever undoubtedlywasamongsttheJews.It wasexpresslyenjoinedonAbraham, and"hisseedafterhim,"asa"signof thecovenantbetweenmeandyou" (Gen.xvii,10).'Apartofthebody seasofferedforthewhole,afewdrops ofinfantbloodwereshedinplaceof the'wholestreamoflife.Theritethus becameadedicatorysacrificeandconsecrationtoGod.Hence.itwasessentialtotheritethatbloodshould flow,bloodbeingdeemednotmerelya symbol,buttheveryseatoflife "Withoutthesheddingofblood,"says St.Paul,"thereisnoremission"(Heb is,22).
Outwardpublicactsofworshiphave everassumedtheformofsacrifices,implyingtheofferingtoGodofgifts. Therehavebeenalwaysanaltaranda priesthood,bothnecessarilyentailing sacrifice.Eveninastateofinnocence someformofsacrificewouldseema necessaryelementofreligion;butfrom theentryofsinsacrificeacquireda newphase-thatofatonement-asinoffering.Guiltandpunishmentmeet ineveryactofsin.Hence,thevictimofferedinsacrificehadtosufferbeslaininmostcases.Humansacrificeswereoffered,butanimalswers substitutedtorecogniseGod'ssupretrfe dominionoverlifeanddeathandappeaseHiswrathrousedbysin.The abuseofsacrificeonlyaccentuatesits
importanceandnecessityintheworld ofreligion.
Circumcision,therefore,wastheremnantofafeltneedofthejusticeof thesinner'sdeathinsacrificeforsin. Itwasasymbolof,andpreparationfor, thegreatatoningsacrificeofChriston i'-oss.stillperpetuatedintheMass. TheVictimofferedonCalvary,human "1divineatthesametime,wasthe soleactofsacrificeadequatetoman's sinandGod'soutragedjustice.Christ tookuponHimselfboththeguiltand nalt-ofoursins.Thesheddingof Hisprecious'Blood,"withoutwhiph hereisnoremission."beganto-dayin theriteofCircumcision.Itwasan easnestandforeshadowingofCalvary. Acceptingthesymboliclawof,Circumcision,Heacceptedalsothelawofretribu'ionandatonement,ofwhichthat sanguinaryritewastheexpressionand foretaste."Itestifytoeverymanthat circumciseth'himself.thatheisadebtortothewholelaw"(Gal.v,3).The yokeofthelaw,lyingheavyonHim, isthepriceofourransom. TheoutpouringofthepreciousBlood beganintheriterecordedto-day,is carriedon.mysticallyandpurely,in theholySacrificeoftheMass.Forwe, too,asSt.Paulsays,liketheJewish, andallotherformsofreligion,"havean altar,wheretheyhavenopowertoeat, whoservethetabernacle.""Every highpriestisappointedtooffergifts andsacrifices"(Heb.v,I).Ourhigh priest,Christ,"apriestforever,accord:or,totheorderofMelchisedech."still offerdaily,throughthepriestsofthe newlaw,theunbloodysacrificeofHis nodsandBlood,undertheveryelementsofbreadandwine,asdidthe patriarchofold(Gen.xiv.,18).The ofcircumcisionisstillmysticallyofferedinthis"newoblation"fortheliving andthedead.Amongstenlightened nationsallotherformsofsacrificehave perished-allbloodyritesandslaugh'erinesaredoneawaywith,orrather theysurvivemystically,meet,andare expressedinthiscleanoblation.What wasgoodandtrueandbeautifulin themsurvivesintheworld-wideSacrificeofthe"HolyMass."
III.Lastly,theriteofCircumcisionis ascribedbysometohygienicmotives. Toittheyattributethehealth,vigour andfertilityoftheJews,andtheircomparativeimmunityfrommanyforms ofdisease.Whatsoeverelementof truththeremaybeinthisopinion,it isunquestionablethatbothlittirgically andsymbolicallycircumcisionisa signofpurityofheart,cleanlinessof lifeandofimmunityfromsin.Itis amysticalcuttingawayoftheseatof spiritualdisease.TheoriginalcovenantwithAbrahamactedasasaving, healingandrestraininginfluenceon carnalaffectionsandexcesses.Then, asnow,alas!thesourcesofnaturallife wereturnedintoapoisonedfountain ofspiritualdeath.But,happily,the firstblood-lettingofourinfantSaviour, broughttomindto-day,beganthose life-givingsacramentalstreamsinwhich thelepersarecleansed.If,atpresent. thereisa"fountainofcleanwaterset upinthenewJerusalemforthe'washingofthesinnersandtheunclean," weoweittotheBloodoftheLamb, thatwasslaintomakeintercessionfor us,"Knowingthatyouwerenotredeemedwithcorruptiblethings,asgold andsilver,butwiththepreciousBlood ofChrist,asofalamb,unspottedand undefiled"(IPeter,i,18).Thefirst bleatingsofthistenderLambwere heardinthecarryingoutofthiscruel rite-thatHemightwinforusthe streamsoflivingwaterthataretous thespringsofeternallife.ForbysubmittingtothisriteChristcovenanted todiethatwemightlive.Through themeritsoftheprecious!Blood,the firstdropsofwhichwereshedto-day, wenow,inthelaverofBaptismandin thebathofPenance,"drawwaterwith joyfromtheSaviour'sfountains." Butletusrememberthatwe,too,in amanner,holdthe"Keysoflifeand
death."UnderGodwemaystillimpartlife.Wecantakeawayourown lives,orthoseofothers,bothphysically andmorally.Wemaycommitsuicide bothinbodyandinsoul.Wemaypoisonthewelloflife.Wemaychange eventhesweeteningwatersofsacramentallifeintocisternsofspiritual death.In'teadoflivingtoChrist,we may,bysin,andtheabuseofsacramentalgrace,"CrucifyagaintoourselvestheLordofGlory."
Nor,thisthoughtsuggestsafewof thelessonstobelearnedfromthese reflections.Besidesthegeneralone, ofattachingsupremevaluetothesoul, tosavewhichChristshedeverydrop ofHispreciousBlood,otherhelpful"' thoughtsspringfromthenatureof theriteitself.Rivetyourattentiononone,theneed,onour part,ofmysticalorspiritualcircumcision.Asacarnalriteisitnolonger binding.Weareinfullenjoymentof theliberty"WherewithChristhas madeusfree";butinthisveryliberty therelurksadanger.WearefreeonlywithinthelimitsofGod's'holy law.TheMosaiclawhasbeenabolishedsolelyinitsritualandceremonialaspect,notinitsmoral,Inthis latterrespect,itssoul,andheart,and spirit,thelawabidesinitseveryjot andtitle.Thetempleworship,enshrinedintheMosaiclaw,wasbuta trainingandpreparationandfittingof thepeopleforthehigherworshipofGod"inspiritandintruth,"justas thesacrificeofgoatsandoxenmade wayforthe"cleanoblation"ofthe Massnowoffered,"Fromtherising ofthesuntothegoingdownofthe same."Aninklingofthispureand higherformofexcisionwasoftengranttotheseersoftheolddispensation.
Indeed,thewordsofJeremias theprophetcomehometous to-dayasforciblyaswhenuttered,"Allthenationsareuncircumcisedinthe flesh;butallthehouseofIsraeelare uncircumcisedintheheart"(Jerem. ix,25).

Forsixyearswehaveassembled hereforourprizegivingandspeech nightunderthegloomycloudsofWar to-nightwerejoiceatthedawnof Peace.Ourfirstimpulsemustsure'v betogivethankstoAlmightyGodfor lit=protectionduringthedarkand threateningyearsjustpassed,andto thankIlimforthereturncfmore peacefuldays.
Aswelookbackontheinfantyears ofourschoolandrealisehowmany werethedangersthatloomedandconsequently,howmanyweretheproblemstobesolved,wecanonlywonderinaweattheguidinghandofProvidencethatsteeredusthroughthese yearsofourgrowing.

Naturally,asSt.Louiswascradled duringthewaryears,thecareersof ourboyshavebeeninfluencedgraveIv,indeed,bythecatastrophe.As soonastheywereofage,theyjoined upthevariousservicesfightingthe greatfightforFreedom.TheArmy, theNavyandtheAirForceclaimed them.Thusmanyoftheboysyou haveseeninthelastfewyearscoming v fortheirprizesonspeechnightall toosoonwereflungintotherealities sadcrueltiesofmodernwarfare.One theseladswasintheinvasionlandi onD-Day,andwaswounded: antherfoughtontheheroicbeaches fBalikPapanandTarakan:others avebeeninthethickoftheconstant ruggleonsea:hut,althoughwounddsome,andshakenall,theseyoungtershaveallcomeback,thankGod, .fe,innocentandbrave,aswehope dpraythatthesonsofSt.Louis ayalwaysbe.

Butalas!Here unanimityends.Whatsystemtofollow:whatmethodsarethebest:what aretheprinciplesonwhich(-Attention shouldbebuilt.Thedivergenceof viewoftheProphetsoftheNew Orderandtheirconsequen':proposas havecreatedaconfusion,notunlike thatwhichfrustratedthebuilders oftheTowerofBabel.However,the epoch-makingEducationBillpassed intolawinGreatBritain,duringthe waryears,givesusagleamofhope. Forundoubtedlyframersofanew educationalsystemforAustraliawill beinfluencedbyMr.Butler'sBill Trueitis,hehasstressedchieflythe necessaryreformsinthemachineryof education,makingareallypractical provisionfortheraisingoftheteachingprofessiontothatstatusinthe communitythatitsimportancedemands,andatthesametimemakinrr adequateopportunitiesforthebenefitsofeducationtobewithinthereach ofeverychildinthecountryorinth, city.But,atthesametime,thenew Billlaysdowntwoimportantprin c'iples:first,thattherecanhenotrue educationwithoutReligion,andsec. ondly,thatineducationtheindivi dualityofeachpupilshouldbetaken intoaccount.

Firstandforemost,ofcourse,hasbeen thethoroughlyreligious,Christianand Catholicbackgroundofoureducation, andsecondly,theJesuitshavealways striventofindateachstageofaboy's schoolcareerhisaptitudeandhisabilitytoassimilatemoreandmoretruth andknowledge.
RecentlyIwasaskedbymyfriend theProfessorofEducationtoputbeforetheBoard,latelysetup,theideals weconsidershouldbepursuedinEducation.,Arathertallorder,Iconfess, andonethatwouldrequireatreatise, atleast,togiveanadequatereply However.Icangiveabriefanswer,
whenIsaythattrueeducationforus consistsingivingourboysthemeans ofbecomingtrueChristiangentlemen-inthefullestsenseoftheword-culturedinmindandheartandcultured inspeechandaction.

WhenIconsidertheboyswhohave passedthroughourhands:whenIexaminetheworkdonedailyintheclassrooms;whenIlistentotheboys'debates,orassistattheirplaysandconcerts,orwhenIattendtheirDebating SocietyDinnerorCatholicEvidence GuildNight;oryetagainwhenIread theirarticlesin"TheEagle,"myheart isliftedupandIamfilledwithhope forthefuture.forhereareresultsalreadyworthwhile.

St.Louisthenfacesthefuturewith itsuncertaintyanditsproblemsfull ofconfidence.Inthepost-warworld,
