Itwasentombedwithinasplendid basilicaatBari,whereheisstillreverect,SailorsthenmadeSt.Nicholas theirpatron.Someoftheshipping tradetookthethreegoldenballs,which representinoldenportrayalsofthe generoussaintthreepursesthathe gave10threesistersneedingdowriestooktheseballsastheirheraldicsign, andintimetheThreeBallsreappeared overpawnbrokers'shops.
Anotherstrangetransformation,San Nicolas,thisofyourgoldengiftsinto 'symbolsofthepawnbrokers'trade!

ThecultofSt.Nicholasreachedthe GermanicworldthroughtheGreek brideofanEmperor,ItwasinGermany,andincountriesunderitsinfluence,thatchildrenbegantolookto SantaClauslastheynowpronounced theEasternname)astheirparticular friendatChristmastime.

AtChristmastime,weallrecallour earliest,mostchildishmemories.Mine isofachildren'sparty:aknockatthe housedoor,athrillingannouncement

Wecomeandgo,SanNioclas,but Christmasremains,andyou,because youareinHeaven,comebackwithit.

Havenotthesaintsbeenspokenof, inaboldmetaphor,asfacetsofGod? -asifeachofthesefiguresdisplayed withparticularexcellencesomeaspect oftheDivineperfection?
Itwouldseemthatthebountyof GodwaswhatSt.Nicholasmostexemplified,Generosityisthenoteofall thelegendsthatconcernhim.The firststorytellshowhethrewthethree pursesintothehouseofthethreesisterswhoneededdowries-anexample wellimitatedoflatebythat'wealthy manwhobywillendowedallthegirls ofaCarlowtownwithmeansformarriage.
AnotherstorysaysthatSt.Nicholas duringafamine,heardthattherewere corn-shipsinport,butboundforthe Emperor'sgranariesatByzantium.Hr persuadedtheseacaptainstoyield someofthegrain,promisingthatthey wouldsuffernoloss;andsoitproved. Thegraingiventothetownspeopleof Myramultiplied,andlastedtwoyears; whilethedepletedcargoesweremysteriouslyincreased..Anobleparable! 0,SanNioclas,letthisyourfaithreturntoourstarvingworldandwinit asimilarsuccour!
AnunbelieversetanimageofSt. Nicholas.toguardhistreasures. Thievesdisregardedtheimageand stole.Theunbelieverfuriouslystruck theimage,andbrokeit.Thatnight SanNioclasappearedtothethieves inadream,woundedandbleeding. Frightened,orconscience-stricken,the rascalsmadeearlyrestitution,andthe unbelieverwasconverted.
Therearefablesattheheadofa legendarylinethatlengthenedtotht inventionoftheNorthernreindeer,
andtothetalesthatwestillmake upforourChristmasstage.They havetheonemark,thatof Christiangenerosity.Theycouldnot beimagined,inthebleakworldbefore thefirs,Christmas.Theycometous, throughthecrystalofthesoulofSan Nioclas,likelightfromBethlehem.

Mr.ThentellshowatowninIndiana awit:idforapost-office,nearlyahundredyearsago,andaskedthatthe nameofthepost-officebeSanteFe. Now,thereisanoldertonvnofthat name,soitwasnotsanctionedforfresh use;accordingly,thepeoplechosein itsplacethenameofSantaClaus.They askedthatSantaClausshouldbetheir town'sname.
