ARGUMENTINTHESPIRITOF CHRISTMAS

ElsewhereinthisissueInotice,from theproofs,thatacontroversyiscommencing.NowIhavenodirectinterestinthisparticularargumentand thefirstthoughtthatstruckmeabout itwashowinappropriatethataverbalbattleshouldbeginintheChristmasissueofallnumbers.OnsecondthoughtsIseeIwaswrong.For wasnuttheFeastofChristmastheinaugurationofthemostvitalandperpetualcontroversyinhumanhistory?

TheChild,thePrinceofPeace,was setforasignofcontradiction.IfHis Mother'ssoulwastobepiercedbya siword,itwasthat"outofmanyhearts thoughtsmayberevealed."The

proposetocollectcasesofblatant moraldelinquencyfortreatment,the patientshaveveryobliginglyidentifiedthemselvesbeyondcavil.Since theadventofcosmeticsithasbeen increasinglydifficulttodistinguish streetwomenfromtheirvirtuousbut vainsisters.Thebeachgarb,however,willremovethatshadowof doubt.

Ourveningcontemporaryinits week-en-IsupplementfromtheAmericanNews:.Magazine,"Time,"reported thaturbanBritonswereamazedbecauseofthe59,000girlswhoenlisted orweredraftedintotheWomen's LandArmy,about30,000wantedto staythereafterdemobilisation.And thisdespitethefactthattheywere workinglonghours,inisolatedplaces, inallkindsofweather,forabout£3 perweek,whentheymighthavehad lucrativewarjobs.Itwasfurtherreportedthatthewarhaduncovereda growingdissatisfactionwithfactory andofficeroutine.Peoplehadfound thatlifeindrab,overbuiltcitiescost toomuch-insomethingmoreimport. antthanpoundsandshillings.

Itisastrangetransformation,truly. OftheBishopofMyra,littleistoldin historysavethebarefactsalready cited,andthathediedinDecember oftheyear345.Evenhispresenceat Nicaeaisdoubtedbysomescholars, sincehisnameisnotrecordedinlists ofthebishopsoftheCouncil.However,paucityofinformationabouta .saint'sdeedsisnomeasureofhisholiness,norofhisinfluenceManya saintbesideSt.NicholasofMyrais mightyintheChurch,anddearto multitudesoftheFaithful,thoughno morecanbetoldofhimthanonesentencewillconvey.

InGreekChristendom,welearn,St. Nicholasisreveredwithintensedevotion.RussianChristianshavecherishedhiscultdawntheages,evenin theirunhappystateofschism.Will hisinfluencebepotentnow,indrawingtheirnationbacktotheFaith,and likewisetoCatholicunity?

ItistoldthatthebodyofSt,Nicholas,arelicsomuchreveredinthe East,yeascarriedawaytoItaly,inthe 11th.century,inasortofpioustheft. Itwasentombedwithinasplendid basilicaatBari,whereheisstillreverect,SailorsthenmadeSt.Nicholas theirpatron.Someoftheshipping tradetookthethreegoldenballs,which representinoldenportrayalsofthe generoussaintthreepursesthathe gave10threesistersneedingdowriestooktheseballsastheirheraldicsign, andintimetheThreeBallsreappeared overpawnbrokers'shops.

Anotherstrangetransformation,San Nicolas,thisofyourgoldengiftsinto 'symbolsofthepawnbrokers'trade!

II.

ThecultofSt.Nicholasreachedthe GermanicworldthroughtheGreek brideofanEmperor,ItwasinGermany,andincountriesunderitsinfluence,thatchildrenbegantolookto SantaClauslastheynowpronounced theEasternname)astheirparticular friendatChristmastime.

`Itwaseasy,then,forthebishop'straditionalgarbtochange,alongwithhis name,tosomethingfamiliartohislittle devotees:andasforthereindeer,with whichhewasfabledtobringhisload ofgoodies,therewasaprettyfable madetoexplainthemystery.

Thusgrewthefigurethatwesee everyChristmasonourgreetingcards, intradeadvertisements,atchildren's parties,andinpantomimes.St.NicholasofMyra,patronofGreece, Russia,Sicily,Lorraine,Liege,Freiburg,Moscow-trulyamightyfigurein theChurch-isvetthehomeliestsaint inthecalendar,sohomelythatfolk whoremembernothingelseofChristianoriginareslowtoforgethim.

Isitfittingtocontinuetocallthe oldgentlemanintheredcoatand twhitewhiskersSantaClaus,SanNioclas,St.Nicholas?Surelytheansweris yes,unlesswearesoPuritanicalthat wecannotlaughaCatholiclaugh,or singaCatholicsong.

AtChristmastime,weallrecallour earliest,mostchildishmemories.Mine isofachildren'sparty:aknockatthe housedoor,athrillingannouncement

byadomestic,thatSantaClausinpersonhascalled.Enterthefamiliarfigureinscarlet,bearingatradesman's sack.Wonder-struck,ascoreofchildrenarehushed,whileSantaClaus solemnlydrawsforthparcels,dulyaddressedtothelittleguestsbyname, andeverygirland'boyreceivesadoll oratoy,thuswrappedupinbrown paperandinmystery.TheManof theHouseexchangesimpromptuwitticismswithSantaClaus,andpressessilverintohispalmashedeparts,to dofftheredcoatoutsidethedoorand togohometohisownyoungpeople: forSanNioclasreallyisthemessengermaninprivatelife,

Wecomeandgo,SanNioclas,but Christmasremains,andyou,because youareinHeaven,comebackwithit.

Iv.

Havenotthesaintsbeenspokenof, inaboldmetaphor,asfacetsofGod? -asifeachofthesefiguresdisplayed withparticularexcellencesomeaspect oftheDivineperfection?

Itwouldseemthatthebountyof GodwaswhatSt.Nicholasmostexemplified,Generosityisthenoteofall thelegendsthatconcernhim.The firststorytellshowhethrewthethree pursesintothehouseofthethreesisterswhoneededdowries-anexample wellimitatedoflatebythat'wealthy manwhobywillendowedallthegirls ofaCarlowtownwithmeansformarriage.

AnotherstorysaysthatSt.Nicholas duringafamine,heardthattherewere corn-shipsinport,butboundforthe Emperor'sgranariesatByzantium.Hr persuadedtheseacaptainstoyield someofthegrain,promisingthatthey wouldsuffernoloss;andsoitproved. Thegraingiventothetownspeopleof Myramultiplied,andlastedtwoyears; whilethedepletedcargoesweremysteriouslyincreased..Anobleparable! 0,SanNioclas,letthisyourfaithreturntoourstarvingworldandwinit asimilarsuccour!

AnunbelieversetanimageofSt. Nicholas.toguardhistreasures. ThisfirstgreatfactinourLord'slife wasconfirmedlaterbyHisownwords: "Itiseasierforacameltopass throughtheeyeofaneedlethanfora richmantoenterintothekingdomof heaven."Thesecondgreatfactby whichOurLordspeakstousisHis closeandintimateassociationwithHis ownfamilyuntilthelastthreeyears ofHislife.Thereis,therefore,somethingparticularlysacredinthissmall unitofhumansociety,norcanany stigmabeattachedtopovertyand hardworksincetheseweretheconditionsexpresslychosenbyOurLordin whichtoliveHisfamilylife.

CultivationoftheSuperficial.

Thelong-continuedandsystematic cultivationofthesuperficialhasimbuedtheman-in-the-streetwiththe ideathathumanlifehasnohigheraim thanabetterall-roundstandardof living:toearnasmuchaswecanto enableustolivefreefromallour wants.

Unfortunately,themoreweearnthe moreour"wants"multiply,andeventuallyeventherestrictionsimposedon earnedincomebytherearingofchildrenthrottleatbirththisprimaryand holyobjectoftheloveunionbetween manandwoman.Christcametoenrichthepoornotwithmaterialwealth butwithHimself,andHecameto warntherichthattheirpossessions

Itisnottheabsenceofpossessions buttheradicaldetachmentfrom themthatcreatesthedispositionfor receivingChrist.Iftheblueprints oftheneworderaretocontribute effectivelytothehappinessofmankind,theymustbeerectedonthe passionateconvictionthat"gainis notgodliness,butgodlinesswithcontentmentisgreatgain."

Tobepoorinspiritinsomedegree isoftheveryessenceoftheChristian life.Nothing,however,arousessuch aprofoundsenseofirritationinthe ielf-confidentapostleasthisbeatitude whichshinesforthsoserenelyfromthe 'rib.

Christmasoffersyouanidealopportunitytocometotheaidofthese valiantyoungmothersandtheirlittle .ne,.Theyareineveryneighlurhood.Youneverthinkofthemas heing"hardhit"becausetheyareso gallant.Butsomeofthemarefightinggrimbattlesalone,fortheyhave noparentstoassistthem.Thereare noauntsandunclestoseethatsmall folkhaveextratoysandsweetswhich arenotonlyhardtoobtain,butwhich costmuchmoneythisyear.

Ifeverpeopleweredeservingof littlekindnessesatChristmastime

theyarethewivesandchildrenof themeninservice.Theydonotask forhelp;infact,youneverheard themutterawordofcomplaint.But thefactremainsthatmanyofthem willhavelittleinthewayofChristmas joyunlessfriendscometotherescue. ByallmeansgivegiftsatChristmas -hutsharewiththoselessfortunate thanyourself.Thereisnojoycomparabletotheknowledgethatyou havemadesomeonehappythroughan actofkindness.

Haveyoueverconsideredthatyou renderagenuineservicetoyourcommunitybyyourownreligiousobservanceoftheChristmasseason?Ifyou haveastoreorbusinessestablishment, youcoulddevoteaportionofyour windowspacetoaChristmasCribandthusprovetoyourownlittle worldthatyoubelieveinHimwhose birthday'wecelebrateonthatday.If youdrawonesoulclosertoGod,if youinfluenceonepersonwhohas strayedawayfromHimtoreturnto Hisfold,youreffortswillbeworthwhile.Eventshaveprovedagain andagain,thatthesightofaChristmasCribworkswondersonthehuman heart,thatitenkindlestheblessed memoriesofchildhood,andthatit bringsoutgoodineveryonewhosees it.

AsIseeit,theonlywaytodothisis toeducateyoungmentoafullknowledgeandlivelyappreciationofthe liturgy,andthusequippedtosend themoutasapostlesoftheLiturgical Revival.

Toreturntowhatmoreexplicitly concernsthelifeoftheSeminaryduringtheyear'whichconcludesto-day:a greatstepforwardhasbeenmadein theappointmentofaresidentSpiritual Director,who,togetherwithonerous scholasticduties,hasfulfilledtotheentiresatisfactionandprofitofallthe bynomeanseasytaskofcateringfor thespiritualneedsofthestudents.I shouldalsolikeheretorecordmyappreciationtoourparishpriest,theRev. Asregardsthestudiesthreestudents,thosewhoreceivedtheTonsure to-day,havecompletedtheirthree years'studyofPhilosophy,andarethe firsttograduatefromSt.Charles'. WhilereadingtheirTheologyinSydney wesincerelyhopethattheywilldo wellandbeacredittoouryoungSeminarythereatGuildford.

ThestandardattainedattheexaminationsinPhilosophy,recentlyheld, wasinalmosteverycasesatisfactory, andImusttestifythatwithoutexceptionallthestudentsofPhilosophy studiedconscientiouslythroughoutthe year.

Theresultsoftheexaminationsin theMinorSeminary,theJuniorand theLeaving,willnotbeknownfor ,ometime,thoughwehopeforreason-

heresincetheSeminaryisnowrecognisedbyboththeUniversityandthe EducationDepartmentasanapproved SecondarySchool, Twodramaticentertainmentswere presentedduringtheyear,bothofvery highquality,consideringtheinexperienceoftheactors.Theartofpublic speakinghasbeencultivatedassiduously,especiallybythephilosophers. Wearegladtobeabletoannounce thatourCarnivalDance,heldinthe CathedralHallonlastWednesday evening,wasanoutstandingsuccess.

Thewholeeveningwentwitha swingrightfromthefirstdance.The useofcolouredspotlightsandmicrophone,and,needwesayit,thesinging oftheassistingartists,MarieMorley, PatO'Donohoe,andBerylAnderson, bothasspecialnumbersandduringthe dances,allcontributedtolendatouch ofglamourtothenight.

Whattheydotakeexceptiontoisthe insinuationthatunchristianliketeachingsandexamplearerifeatthistheatre.

NomatterwhatplayhasbeenselectedatPatch,withtheexceptionof "Hobson'sChoice,"ithasbeencriticisedonthegroundsofobjectionablepropaganda."LifewithFather,"recognisedthroughouttheworldasoneof thefinestandcleanestcomediesever written,mayhaveoneortworeferencestoreligion,whichcouldbeconsideredhardlyinthebestoftaste,hut undernoconsiderationcouldthisplay hetermedpropagandaofanytype.

"WatchontheRhine"isanantiFascistplay,andtheCatholicChurch claimstobeanti-Fascist,sowhythe rootedobjectiontoaleadingantiFascist.EdwardBeeby,playinghisreal liferoleonstage,especiallyashehas atnotimebeenamemberoftheCommunistParty,Itseemsincredible thatintelligentpeoplecouldconceive thatamembershipofbetweenthree andfourhundredpeople,ranginginage fromfourtosixty,andninetypercent. ofthemwomen,wouldstandforanorganisationofthiskind,basedonCommunisticpropagandaandanti-religious feelings.InthefouryearsIhave beenassociatedwithPatch,therehas neverbeenonereligiousorpolitical discussionatthetheatre,duechiefly tothefactthat,asrecognisedby"The Record,"Mrs.Beebyisfirstandforereot,interestedinartandallthatpertainstoart.Aclubofthiskindtakes itstongandoutlookfromthedirector, andIdaBeehvisthedirector,norEd+WardBeeby.

"Sheppey"waschosen,nottoexpress eithertheproducer'sideaofChristian ityorthatoftheClub,but-aswas clearlyexplainedintheprologue-was basedonthehypocrisyoftheworld. Itisthestoryofasimplemanwith highidealsandaninherentbeliefihisfellowmenwhoisadjudgedinsane becausehehaschosen,withallgoodintentions,toputintopracticeone.of Christ'steachings.Norisitsuggested foronemomentthatthisisallthat isnecessaryforaChristiantodoin ordertobesaved.Theprayingscen:' isascenethatreliesalotontheinterpretationputonitbytheaudience, andwasproduced,notforcomedy value,butmerelyasanindicationof theabsoluteselfishnessofSheppey's daughter,whoresortstoprayer(such assheknowsit)togaincontrolofher father'swealth.

Itmightbeofinteresttoknowthat manyoftheplayschosenatPatch havebeenchosenbyaCatholic,and notarenegadeCatholicat.that.They arechosen,firstly,forentertainment value,secondly,productionvalue,and neveratallforpropagandapurposes.

encehastheprivilegeofacceptingor discardingthatwhichdoesnotappeal totheirsenseofdecencyorrighteousness.Can"TheRecord"everrememberorpointoutonesingleoccasionon whichanyotherClubhasforewarned patronswitha"Suitableforadults only"signincludedintheiradvertisements?Andyetwhyisitthatthe Clubsresponsible(andareapparently adheringtoChristianprinciples)have onnumerousoccasionsbeenbrought toheelbothinthe"DailyNews"and "WestAustralian"forthedirtycontextoftheirproductions.Asanexample,"SpringtimeforHenry.""The Record"chidedtheRepertoryClub gentlyontheirproductionof"Sweet Aloes."whichdealtwithabortionin thefirstact,butfailedtogivetheClub anythingliketherapovertheknucklesithasaccordedPatchfor"Sheppey,"whichsimplydramatisesthereactionsofaselfishgroupofpeopleto aman'sendeavourtofindhimselfa placeintheKingdomofHeaven.Nor isthisendeavourbasedonreligion,but onhisowninnatesenseofrightand 'wrong.Asfortheinsinuationthat"in otherhandstheplaymayhavetaken onadifferentline,"mightonesuggest thatnootherClubinPerthhas,ever attemptedtoputbeforethepublica playwithanysortofmoralwhatsoever.nomatterhowdistortedthe author'sideamayappeartoaChurch oreanisation.Even"Robert'sWife" didnotattempttohelptheaudience arriveattheconclusionthatbirthcontrolwaswrong,butsimplythata womanwassacrificinghercareerto thatofherhusband,whohappenedto beamemberoftheChurch,andwhose Bishop.nothimself,disagreedwiththe movement.

AtnotimeinitscareerhasPatch producedasuggestivecomedy.On occasionsthelinesspokenindramas havebeenfrank,butneversuggestive, norhavetheybeenhammeredhomeby 'heproducer...ruststopandconsider theundoubtedspotsofsuggestiveness in"LoveintheMist,""lBoyMeets Girl,""SpringtimeforHenry,""Sweet Aloes,"and,veryrecently,"The Women."allofwhichhaveapparently escapedthecensureof"TheRecord" reviewers.

Sir,-,MembersofPatcharealways interestedtoreadyourcriticismsof theirpresentation.Wethinkthatfrom Yourpointofviewtheyaregivenwith sincerity,andalthoughwemaynotalwaysagreewiththem,werealisethat whenapresentationisputbeforethe public,itisopentocriticism. We acceptsuchcriticismandhavenofeelingofresentmentwhatsoever.
