Ithasbecomealmostatraditionin HighgatetoassociatetheFeastof ChristtheKingwithFirstHolyCom munion,andthoseofthefaithfulwho can,makeeveryefforttobepresentat thisbeautifulandimpressiveceremony.Thatiswhytherewasanoverflowingcongregationatthe8o'clock MassonSunday,October29,when54 littleboysandgirlshadthegreathappinessofreceivingOurDivineLordfor thefirsttimeinHolyCommunionfrcm thehandsofVeryRev.FatherWallace, Asthechildrenenteredthechurch andproceededuptheaisletotheseats reservedforthem,theywereajoyto behold.Thegirls,spotlessindainty whitefrocksandflower-wreathedveils, theboysinmoresoberdress,werea credittoboththeirparentsandtheir teachers.ThroughouttheMassthey werealwayscalmlyrecollected,and theirdevoutbehaviourwasmostin spiring.
Averypoignantmomentwasafter theConsecration,whenthechildren recitedaloudtheirlittleActsofPreparation.Thefloodgatesofmemory openedwide,andmanyinthatbig congregationfoundthemselvestrying torecapturethejoyandhappinessof thatbygonedayintheirownlives whenthey,evenastheselittlechildren,knelttoreceivetheirLordand theirGodinFirstHolyCommunion. Inalittleaddresstothechildren, preparatorytoreceiving,FatherWallacecongratulatedthemonhavingarrivedatthehappiestdayoftheir

Includedamongtheexhibitswere quiteafewworthyofmention.One inparticular,"Storm,"drewattention byitsrealisticportrayal.Another, "TheForest-aFantasy,"wasanexcellentstudyfromthevointofview oflightandshade.
Amongtheflowerstudies,"Kangaroo Paws'and"Gerberas"yankedhighest. bothbeingverycreditablyexecuted. Theportraitswerealsotheobjectsof somelittleatention,andmychoice amongthesewentto"Pam,"because oftheexcellenthandlingofexpressionwhichwasdisplayed.
"EbbTide"and"North-WestCoast" werealsonoteworthycanvasses.

Totheordinaryreaderofourdaily papers,the"Dobellfight,"whichrecentlytookplaceinSydney,issomethingjusttoofunnytobetakenseriously.TheappearanceoftheEquity Courtwitlfthemixedcrowdpresentat thecasemustcertainlyhavebeenvery amusing.Ridiculousasthewholeaffairmayappear,itissomethingtobe ral:enveryseriously.Itisnotjustthe caseoftwopartiescontendingforthe materialvalueofanArtaward:itis.
weareinclinedtosay,the,climaxof somethinglittleshortofanational crisis,inwhicheveryAustralianis Willynillyinvolved.
TheawardoftheArchibaldPrizefor portraitpaintingin1943toWDohell washailed,nodoubt,withgreatrejoicm-lvagrowingcrowd,wellrepre'entedatthecourtcase,towhoseserviceDohellseemstohavedevotedhis unquestionedtalentsandability.But, ontheotherhand,itwasalsoreceived withjustresentmentinmanyother quarters.Itamounted,aresponsible leaderremarked,toadirectattackon theAustralianneopleanditsculture: buttheAustralianpublicisnotindifferenttothekindofculturethatis beingforceduponthem.And'thus thepresentcasehasbeengreetedby manyasasignthatthereisstillsanityleftinAustraliaanditsculture.
Amongstthewitnesseswehavea prominentfigureinAustralianArtand culture,pleadingforwhatappeareda lostcause.Mr.Macdonald,weare told,hadstudiedin'Melbourne,LondonandParis,andspentfiveyearsin AmericapaintingandteachingArt.He hasbeen,foranumberofyear'scurator ofourNationalGalleriesinSydneyand Melbourne,andnowistheArtcritic foradailypaper.
Forthedefence,wehaveamongst otherwitnessespeopleofresponsible r,ositionsineducationalcentres.We arenottoldwhatchangeshavecome inlateyearsforaresponsibleCurator ofourGalleriestobecomeacriticfor anewspaper(hecan,nodoubt,-doa greatdealofeducationalserviceinthis post,butthisisnotthecase),orhow ournewArtmentorscametoenjoy suchcomfortablepositions.Thestory mighthelptounderstandthewhole affairmuchbetter.
ButtheDohellcaseisnotanisolatedincident.ManyoccurencesofsimilarnaturearetakingplaceinAustralia,thatshowedthetrendofmind thatistakingpossessionofourcoun-
try.TheErnMalleyliteraryhoax isstillfreshinourminds,whenweare toldthatcanvassesillustratinghis poemswereprominentinaContemporaryArtexhibitionheldrecentlyin Melbourne.TheN.S.W.Travelling ArtScholarship,forwhichDobellwas oneofthejudges,showstowhatan extenteducationalcentresfosterthe degradationofourfinearts.
Thereareatpresenttwoopposing conceptionsofArt,answeringtotwo otherdifferentconceptionsoflifeand nature.Wehaveononesidethesupporters(whatevertheirphilosophyor religionmaybe)oftheretognisedphilosophyofArt,thephiloosphyofthe Beautiful,Inwhateverwaybeauty bedefined,thereisundoubtedlyinthy' humansoulaninneraestheticsense,a naturalaspirationtothebeautiful, akintoourlongingfortruthandgoodness.WeseeBeautyallaroundusin Nature,andtheaimoftheartistshould betograspthatbeauty,toconceive andproduceitinhisoriginalworks. ThusherespectsNature,hestudies naturetofindthereinasemblanceof thatBeautywhichalonecanfillhis soul.Therearccertainlyinthisconceptionofartsomelimitations,butthe saneartistknowstheywilleversafeguardhimfromartisticaberration.He knowshewillalwaysfailinhisaspirations.for(ourCatholicpoettells us),"AlllifewillBeautyflyme"(P. Grano),butheishappyinhisquest, andineachnewattemptheisnearing hisgoal.Heweepsandprays: "ThatBeautythenwillgazeonme, ForterribleisBeautywithaverted face." --.(GranoinQuest.)
ThisisathoroughlyChristianconceptionofart.Underitsinfluencewe lookfortheCreatorinHiscreatures.It disclosestouswhatourmodernCatholicmindwouldcall"theSacramentalityofNature."
Andherewecometotheotherview ofArt.Itistheoppositeextreme, thesorepointofour"culturedcivilisation."Itisbasedonapurelymaterialisticphilosophy.Hereneitherlife norart-oneoflife'smostennobling activities-needbetakenseriously.Our modernrebelliousminddoesnotwant anylimitations.Artismadepurely subjective(andwhynotifevenreligionismerelyamatterofpersonallikingandinterpretation!),andNature itselfisdeprivedofallitswondersand ofitsownCreator.Andthusanew cultarisesintheartworld,thecultof theUgly.Many,ofcourse,regardArt asareligion,andanewGospelis preachedtothepeopleeithershamelesslyandopenly,orplasteredupwith ameaninglesslistofsonorousartistic andinartisticexpressionsdabbedoccasionallywithverypatrioticbutnotso sincereoutbursts.Whatisthenew meaning,e.g.,conveyedtoourminds bythefollowingartisticverbage:deformationoftheform,formorganisation,volumemanipulation,andspatial rhythm,volumetensionandothersimilarrantinventedbythefoundersof modernart(plasticorchestration), anddesignedtoleadthethoughtlessmindtoswallowothermoreridiculousexpressions.InanageofincongruitiesthepretendedexistenceofCommercialArtwasnotincongrousenough, andsowehearnowofanti-facistart.
Ourmodernscanagainrepeatwhat oneoftheirgreatheroesandforerunners,the"vulgar,"socialist,G.Courbet,wroteintheflushofpopularsuccess:"Ihavestupifiedtheentireworld. Ihavetriumphedovernotonlythe ancients,butthemoderns. Ihave thrownconsternationintotheworldof Art," Giventhefalseprinciplesonwhich theybasetheirart,thepresentstate ofaffairsintheartworldisnotsurprising.Perhapsitismoresurprising toseethelackofreactioninthepeople. Fortunatelywearenotfamiliarin thisStatewiththekindofContemporaryArtExhibitionsthatarebecomingveryfrequentintheEast.We takeforgrantedthatsuchexhibitions arerunintheordinaryway,andthat sofarthepolicehasnotbeenforced tokeepthepublicatspittingdistance fromthepictures.Thatwouldnotbe

Ittakesbutamomentbutitseffects areeternalandintenselyaffectevery momentofourfutureofbothbody andsoul.Thistruthisobvious,asalso t.whatimmediatelyfollowsfromit, thatthemoreweunderstandofthe natureofthecontractbeforewemake it,thebetterforus.

Wemustmakeitpossibleforallto beregular,activeparticipantsinclean, healthysport.Theyoungandhealthyonlookerandstreetloungermust beelimnated.Anation,whoseyouths aretrained,fit,andhealthy,isphysicallypreparedtomeetacalltoarms.

YouthWeekinPerth,theLordMayor (Dr.T.W.Meagher)statedthatasuccessfulyouthmovementmusthavea religiousbackground.Healsopointedtotheevileffectsofafallingbirthrateandurgedthatmotherhoodand familylifeshouldbeaccordedastatus worthyofthem.
To-day,saidDr.Meagher,weare moreyouthconsciousthaneverbefore inournation'shistory.Manyyoung people,knowinglittleofthedaysof peace,acceptwaraspartoflife'scurriculum.Theydonotquestionthe causeofwar,butyouthhastosuffer andmakerighttheresultsofthiswar.
WerealisethatthefutureofourEmpireandtheworldiswhattheyouth ofto-daywillmakeit,andwearedeterminedthatAustralianyouthshall haveeveryopportunitytoequipitself tocompetesuccessfullywithothernations,andthisresolveisresponsible fortheformationofsomanyyouthorganisations.
Inmyopinionasuccessfulyouth movementmusthaveareligiousbackground,notnecessarilyaspartofits rulesorceremonies,butthefoundation onwhichallsuchactivitiesarebuilt mustacknowledgethepresenceand guidanceofanOmnipotentandkind God.Truly,theBritishyouthmovementshavethisessential,andareexemplifiedbytheBoyScouts'AssociationandtheworkofthatgreatEmpire builder,LordBadenPowell,whose workandinfluencespreadtomost countriesoftheearth,eventoGermany.HowevertheGermans,under theguidanceofameglo-maniacal Fuehrer,turnedfromGod.Therewe seethespectacleofyouth-Hitler youth-beingusedtoconsummatethe insatiablelustforpowerandworld dominationofasadisticregime,one ofwhosespokesmensaid:"WeGermanshavebeencalleduponbyfateto bethefirsttobreakwithChristianity. Itisanhonour."

Wearejustifiablyproudofthe scholasticachievementsandphysical developmentoftheyouthofAustralia.
Thedevotiontodutyandloveof country,asshownbytheeagerness withwhichouryoungpeoplerushedto joinourfightingforcesattheoutbreakofwar,andthegloriousdeedsof valourandsacrificesinceenacted, brandsYoungAustraliaasworthysons oftheAnzacs.IbelievethatAustralianYouthatwarto-dayisbehaving exactlyastheYouthofAustraliaofa generationagobehaved,andthatAustralianYouthinthefuturewillconductitselfinthesamefaithful,heroic mannerintimeofnationaltrial.
Werejoiceinthesuperlativequalitiesofouryouth.Letus,inourGodblessedland,builtagreatnationcomposedofsuchnoblesonsandlaugh ters.Letusrememberthewarning givensomeyearsagobyaChineseCon sul,whostated:

Whatthe"medicineman"istotheprimitives,thepsychiatrististothemoderns.Heisblindlyinvokedbyjournalists,politiciansandsociologistsas a"cure-all"foreveryproblemthatdefiestheirnarrow,materialisticapproachtosocialproblems.Dr.J.Catarinch,DirectorofMentalHygiene, inVictoria,struckasoundandtimelywarningagainsttheexaggerated claimsofcertainpsychiatrists,particularlyinthetreatmentof problems,inhisannualreporttotheVictorianParliamentrecently.
InhisannualreportonMentalHygience,Dr.Catarinchcriticisedthe practiceofsomecourtsandpsychiatristsinreferringsexualoffendersto theMentalHygieneDepartment.Offenders,hesaid,weresometimessent tothementalhospitalsfor"treatment"anditwasbecomingaccepted bythatpublicthatitwaspossibleto changethepersonalityofsexperverts andturnthemintonormalmembers ofsociety.
Itwastruethat,occasionally,somethingcouldbedonetodivertperverse tendenciesintonormalchannels,and forthisreasoneverypersonfound guiltyofasexoffenceshouldbesubmittedtoamedicalexaminationand toanytreatmentthoughtnecessary.
Butitwasdifferentwhenunjustifiablyconfidentopinionsweregiven bymedicalmen.Heregrettedthe tendency,whichwasbecomingtooapparent,forthepsychiatrist,whogave aplausibleexplanationoftheperversion,toimaginethathewasthereby iustifiedinmutingthat"sure"could heexpected.
DangerousAttitude.
Thecourt,continuedDr.Catarinich, hadreferredcasestothedepartment andindicatedthatitdesiredaspecifiedformoftreatment.Themedicalofficer,whomightdisagreewith theassertionsmade,wasthenplaced inthedilemmaofdeciding-whether, asamedicalpractitioner,heshould notgivetreatmentwhichhemight considertoheofnoavail,orwhether, asanofficeroftheState,hewould carryoutthedecisionofthecourt.
"Itmaybesaid,"saidDr.Catarin i.h,"thatnophysicalbasisofsexperversionhasbeenfound,andthatthere isnocriterionbyreasonofwhicha cureofsuchtroublecanbeclaimed Further,thefactthatanindividual isabnormalinhissexpropensities shouldnotabsolvehimfromblame ifheindulgesinpracticesforbidden bythelaw.

years-butagainstthetypeofpopular publicity-seekingpyschiatrist,who makesexaggeratedandunscientific claimsandislargelyresponsiblefor thecultofpsychiatryasthe'answer toalllife'sproblemsinnewspapers andmagazines,Thescienceofpsychiatryhasdevelopedsofastthat therewaslittletimeintheearly yearsforself-criticism.Itsearly phasewascharacterisedbyacocksureconfidenceintheperfectionof itstechniqueaswellasintheability ofthepsychiatristtoproduceanideal personality.Itworkedonaprincipleof"humanstandardisation," whichleadstotheunsoundtendency toregardanyexcepttheimaginary "ideal"manorwomanasmaladjusted. Itwasopposedtoselfcontrol,condemninginhibitionandrepressionas unwiseanddangerous.Aboveall,it hadafalseunderlyingphilosophy,of amaterialisticandexaggeratedlysexualnature,whichisinheritedfrom popularisationsofFreud,whoinventedthetechniqueofpsycho-analysis.
Dr.A.F.Tredgold. psychiatryhasmoved farbeyondthisprimitivephase,but popularpsychiatristsinthecommunityajidthedailypressandweek-end magazines,which,invariably.reflecta time-laginsuchmatters,arestilltalkingalanguageandmakingclaims whichareabsurdandoutmoded.The greatestauthorityonpsychological medicineandmentalhygieneinthe BritishEmpireisDr.A.F.Tredgold, oftheUniversityofLondon Heis theauthorofthestandardworkon mentaldeficiency.Hislatestwork, whichhasrecentlyreachedAustralia. shouldheconsultedbyalleditors, magazinewriters,politicians,social reformersandpeoplewhohavebeen affectedwiththemyththatpsychoanalysisandthepatronageofexpen-. sivepsychiatristswillsolvealltheir mentalproblems.
"Thevalueofpsycho-analysis,writesDr.Tredgold,"isveryquestion able,inspiteoftheextravagant claimswhichhavebeenmadeforit Freudhimselfconsidereditchiefly applicabletocertainofthechronic neuroses,particularlyhysteriaand persistentanxietystates;buteven herehesaidthatthepatientsmustbe intelligent.possessedofacertaindegreeofethicaldevelopment,havea realdesiretogetwell,andbewilling toco-operateMoreover,forasuccessfulresult,treatmentmustbegiven for.anhoureachdayandprobably overaperiodofyears.ItIsclear thatwiththeseconditionstreatment isonlypossibleinaverysmallproportionofpatients."

ThelateMrs.ByrnewasbornatMacarthur,Victoria,75yearsago,andwas thewidowofthelateStephenByrne, whopre-deceasedherin1936.Mr.and Mrs.Byrnewereengagedinfarming intheWyalkatchemdistrictformany years.andwerebothverypopularand heldinhighesteeminthatdistrictby numerousfriendsAfterthedeathOr herhusband,Mrs.Byrnereturnedto Victoria,andhadresidedthereuntil herrecentdeath,whichoccurredafter ashortillness. Amemberofthe ThirdOrderofSt.FrancisandadevoutCatholicineveryway,Mrs.Byrne displayedanactiveinterestinallfunctionsoftheChurchandwillbegreatlymissedinherparish.
RequiemMasswascelebratedinSt. FrancisXavier'sChurchbyRev, FatherDonnelly,andthecortegelater movedtothecemetery,whereRev. FatherShannonrecitedthelastprayers,inthepresenceofarepresentative gatheringoffriends.
