TransferringObedienceandSpiritual LoyaltyFromtheParents

FamilyLifeWouldBeStrengthened iftheMembersWorshippedTogether

Earnestpeoplearealwaystalking earnestlyabouttheimportanceof thefamily.Itisthebackboneofthe nation,thebulwarkofcivilisation,the hearthandthehomeoftheChristian faith.Atthispoint,everybodydutifullyapplauds.Buttheprocessof breakingthefamilyintoitscomponentparts,ofseparatinghusbandsfrom wivesandchildrenfromparents.goes onandon.ThefamilyislikeMark Twain'sweather,aboutwhicheverybodytalksandnobodydoesanything. Thepurposeofthispieceistopropose thatsomethinghedone.

ThesomethingthatIwouldsuggest isfamilyretreats.Iamnottalking double-talk.ByfamilyretreatsI meanfamilyretreats. Imeanaperiodofspiritualandphysicalrenewal andregenerationforFatherand Motherandbrotherandsister.Ido notmeananythinglong-facedorpietistic.Imeanthatonceayear,inthe rollickingSpringorthegloriousSummerortheinvigoratingAutumn,Papa andMamaandalltheirlittleprides andjoysoughttopileintothefamily flivverandrattleawaytoamonasteryorsomesuchplaceforaweekof fun,frolicandfamilyedification.

Itisatthispointinthediscussion thattheretreat-mastersgenerallylook somewhatupset.Itisnotthatthey arenotinterested,buttheydoubtthat itcanbedone.Itcanbedone,and ithadbetterbedone.IfChristian civilisationistobesaved,itmustbe savedprincipallythroughthefamily. Rightthereandnowhereelseiswhere theevilsofdivorceandsocialsuicide andjuveniledelinquency-theevils whicharemakingthehumanraceinhuman-canbeattackedanddestroyed.

Thefamily,everybodyagrees,ought tobestable.Nowthewaytomake itstableistomakeithappy.The waytomakeithappyistomakeit holy.Andthewaytomakeitholy istohelpittogrowinspiritualthings asitgrowsinotherthings-asaunit. HarassedandHeroicWives.

Thewholepointandpurposeofthe familyistotraingoodcitizens-forthe kingdomsofdtheworldandthekingdomofheaven.Itdoesthismost effectivelywhenittrainsitsmembers toworkandplayandpraytogether. Partofitsreasonforbeing-byfar themostimportantpart-islostif theworkingandtheplayingarecooperative,whiletheprayingisindividualandseparate.

Thendoesitnotseempertinentto inquirewhatistheserveininviting thehusbandandfathertospendthree daysoraweekinaretreat-housetakingspiritualinventory,whilehisharassedwife,perhapsabitsullenly,perhapswithheroicandheavenlyresignation,staysathomehagglingwith thebutcher.worryingwiththechildren, andwonderingwhytheman whomarriedherforbetterorworse wouldn'thavepleasedGodasmuchor evermoreifhehadelectedtostayat homesayinghisprayersandhelping withthewashings?

Suchmatterscanbestbeillustratedbyturningthemupsidedown.Supposethatthehusbandsoftheparish weretostrugglehomesomeevening. lateasusual,tofindtheladiesof theirhousesgone,thechildrenunwashedandunfed,andcurtnoteson thekitchentablestotheeffectthat thewiveshavedepartedtothinkand pray,andthefatherscanjollywell shiftforthemselvesuntilfurthernotice.AcrosstheenlsuingscenesI drawamercifulcurtain.

Butafterall,what'ssauceforthe goose;andIhaveoftenruminated alongtheselineswhenIobservedthat evenintheparishchurches,which oughttobethedefendersandcemmtersofthefamily,thefatheriscoaxed togototheeighto'clockMasswith theHolyName,themothertothe TenwiththeAltarSociety,andthe childrentotheNine,wheretheymay besupervisedbythesisters.Thus thefamily'sspirituallifeischopped

Itseemstomethatallthissortof thingtendstolessentheauthority andresponsibilityofparents,andto transfertheobedienceandspiritual loyaltyofthechildrenfromleather andMothertoSisterwithacapitalS. Iamnotspeakingcriticallyorcarpingly.Thereishardlyanydanger thatCatholicparentswilleverforget whattheyowetothesisterhoods. NowwhatIamconcernedtoemphasiseisthattoseparatetheCatholicfamilyatMassistoweaken,notto strengthen,thedutifulnessandpres. tigeofparentsandthestabilityofthe home.Whatoughttobethecommonestsightinthechurch-thatof father,motherandchildrenkneeling togetherattheCommunionrails-has actuallybecometherarest.And whenfamiliesdonotreceiveCommuniontogether,itishardlymatterfor wonderthattheinstitutionofthefamilyisshakingonitsfoundations;or rather,totteringbecauseitschief foundationhasbeenwithdrawn.
