RememberthewordsofPopePiusIX:"Nonearetobeconsideredsopoorandnaked,nonesoinfirmorhungryorthirsty,as thcsewhoaredeprivedoftheknowledgeofGodandofHis grace."SurelythereisacollectiveobligationuponustocompensatethesepeoplefortheirlossandfortheirsufferingbyputtingwithintheirreachtheFaithandallitsblessings.Thenew Missionwillaimtorehabilitatethemineveryway.Theywill begivenusefulandproductiveworktodoaccordingtotheiraptitudes.Nowthatthepublicconscienceiswakingtothepointof givingnativesfullcitizenshiprights,itisanopportunetimeto launchaconstructivescheme.Theviewthathalf-castesinherit thevicioustendenciesofbothraceswillbeshowntobeuntrue;the factisthathalf-casteshaveneverhadachance;theyarevictims notofheredity,butofenvironmentandneglect.Willyou helpinthisgreatwork?

He French-Canadianthenwenttoworkamongthe CatholicsatBourbonnais,intheDioceseofChicage,receivingpriestlyfacultiesfromtheBishopofthatDiocese.InAugust,1856, hewassuspendedonceagainbythe BishopofChicagoandsinceheresistedthesentenceofsuspension,wasexcommunicatedinSeptemberofthe sameyear.
Hisaccountofthemattervariesin variouspartsofhiswritings;inone placehesaysitwasbecauseofhis allegedstubbornnessandwantof submissionwhenorderedtotransfer fromSt.Anne'stoanotherMission, Kakokia;inanotherplacehesuggests thatthereasonwashisrefusaltogive uptotheBishopthepropertyinhis churchatSt.Anne's;inyetathird placeheclaimsthatheaskedthe Bishop"tomakeapublicinquest abouthim,andhavehisaccusersconfronthim."
HereittheBishop'saccount:"The questionofthepropertyinthechurch hadnothingtodowiththeremovalof M.ChiniquyfromSt.Anne's,orwith hisdisobedience,hisschismandhis subsequentexcommunication.Ihad inmyhandsallthroughthelegal titlestoallthechurchpropertywhich noonecoulddispute.Icametothis lastconclusion(namely,toremove himfromSt.Anne'stoKakokiafor reasonsofurgentnecessity,whichI toldhimatthetime,andwhichhe isfreetomakepublic.Hisobstinate disobedienceandtheexcessiveviolenceofhislanguageandbehaviour,obligedmetosupendhim;hissubsequentschismbroughtonhisexcommunication."
Heresistedtheexcommunication andledhiscongregationintoschism. Aftertwounsuccessfulattemptsatreconciliationhadbeenmade,hewas againpubliclyexcommunicatedon August3,1858. Accordingtohis ownaccounthehadalready,inApril ofthatyear,beenconvertedtoProtestantismandhisflockwasprepared tosecedewithhim.
Whateveraboutthat,hecontinued toadministertothecongregationof St.Anne's,Bourbonnais,givingitthetitleof"CatholicChristians." Miost ofthesepeoplereturnedtotheCatholicChurch:therestwiththeirpastor wereformallyreceivedintothePresbyterianChurchoftheUnitedStates bythePresbyteryofChicagoonApril 15,1860. Threeyearslaterhewas backinCanada,asamemberofthe PresbyterianChurchofCanada.There heremainedfortherestofhislife.
Duringthisperiodhewroteseveral books.Inhisfirstbiographicalwritings,in1861,hegavedoctrinalconsiderationsastheonlyreasonforhis conversiontoProtestantism;ina laterbook,"WhyILefttheChurchof Rome,"nochargewasmadeagainstthepersonalcharacteroftheCatholic clergybutin"FiftyYearsinthe ChurchofRome,"wefindawholesaleaccusationagainsttheChurch andtheCatholicclergy;andaccusationsagainstparticularpersons,principallyagainsttheBishopswithwhom hehadcomeintoconflict.Thisbook waspublishedin1885,twenty-seven yearsafterhelefttheChurch.

Dr.Catalan,0.S.B.).Theminiature townis56milesfromPerth.
Therefectory,builtofstone,cement andbricks,istiledandcontainsthe kitchenblock,workshops,,classrooms, anddiningrooms,whilethefirstbuilding,whichwascompletedabout12 monthsago,containsthedormitory, bedrooms,chapelandstores.When theadministrativeblockiscomplete, itwilllinkthesetwobuildingsbut standbehindalargecourtyardconnectingthetwobuildings.
IntroducingSirJamesMitchell,Mr. J.J.Kenneallypaidtributetothere markableworkofBrotherKeaney andhisfourassociateBrother's,who hadseenadreamcometrueagainst greatodds,whichmighthavemade manyothersdespair.

InmakingthefourthAnnualReport,theSuperiorofSt.Joseph'sFarm andTradesSchool,Rev.BrotherP. Keeney,saidhehadmuchpleasurein extendingacordialwelcometoBindoontomanyfriendsandsupporters, andexpressedhisappreciationtoHis Excellency,SirJamesMitchell,whois theLieutenantGovernorandthe directrepresentativeofHisMajesty theKinginthisState.Thereport wasreadonBrotherKeaney'sbehalf' byMr.J.J.Kenneally.-
ThepastyearinBindoonhasbeen oneofgeneralactivityandmuchprogress.Twelvemonthsagothefirst wingwasblessedbytheLordAbbot, andthefoundationstoneofthesecond wingwaslaidbytheHon.R.G. HawkeM.L.A.,whowasthethenMinisterforLabourandIndustry. Todaythesecondwingiscompletedand blessedbytheLordAbbot,andthis afternoon7ouwillwitnessthelaying ofthefoundationstoneofthecentral blockbyHisExcellencytheLieutenantGovernor.Thisrepresentsvery substantialprogressonthebuilding sideinacomparativelyshorttime; stillitisonlypartofthemanyother activitiescarriedoninBindoonduringthepastyear.Manythousands oftonsofsoilhavebeenshiftedfor thepurposeofwaterconservation,the groundssurroundingthebuilding's havebeenlevelledandbeautified,large vegetableandfruitgardenshavebeen laiddownandfencedwithrabbitprooffences,tradeshopshavebeen setupandequipped,and,inaddition. thefarmingsidehasshownanallroundimprovementbyanextensionof thedairyherdandpoultryfarm,the introductionofanimprovedbreedof sheep,andwhatisofgreaterimportanc-thantheforegoing,thatdozens ofboyshavegainedfirst-handexperienceandpracticaltraininginthe many-sidedactivitiesoftheBindoon Scheme.
Thesystemofworkissoarranged astoenablethemajorityofboysin
theinstitutiontogainsomeexperienceinthenumerousactivitieswhich aregoingondaily,suchasbuildingin brickandstone,plastering,concrete work,moulding,joinery,plumbing, tile-laying,sheepfarming,dairying, pigandpoultryraising,teamandtractorworkinconnectionwiththefarm, truckdriving,woolclassing,gardening, damconstruction,road-making,charcoalburning,cookingandlaundry work. Iamdeeplygratefultothemembers oftheLotteriesCommissionforthe verysubstantialassistancewhichthey havegiventoenableustomake thelivingconditionsoftheboys comfortableandhealthy,andtomake thegeneraltrainingschemeefficient andati'squlassettotheboysand theStateaswell.Ourbigandimportschemeofwaterconservationhas beenmadepossible,owingtothefinancialassistancerenderedbytheCommision,andalthoughthescheme notyetcomplete,itmustbeevidentto allpresentthatanimmenseamount hasalreadybeenaccomplishedinconnectionwithsuchanimportantasset totheinstitution.Whilespeakingof thisverynecessaryadjunct.Ishould liketoexpress-mythankstothePublicWorksDepartmentforthevery materialhelpwhichwereceivedfrom thatdepartment.

Wewerepleasedtolearnrecently thatMadameAliceCarrard,apianiste withatinelnt,nnationalreputation, haddecidedtotakeupresidenceinour faircity.OnesoonbegantospeculatehowsoonitwouldbebeforePerth music-loverswouldbetreatedtoarecitalbyMadameCarrard.Wedid nothavelongtowait,asthisfamous artistekindlyConsentedtogivearecitalatthePlazaTheatreonSunday, ('etolier1.-i,inaidoftheAustralian ComfortsFund.Toanalmostcrowdedtheatre,Madamepresentedareal exhibitionofheroutstandingartistry, asacarefullyselectedprogrammeprovidedfullscopeforacompleteexpressionofherundoubtedvirtuosity.
Theopeninggroupconsistedofthree Sonatas(DMajor.FMinor,andG Major)byDomenicoScarlatti,who waspossiblythegreatestcomposerof keyboardmusicinItalyinhistime II6S5-17,';'.Thesesonatas,although so-called,havelittleincommonwith thelaterMozart-Beethovensonata forms.Theyhavealivelygraceand freshnessaboutthem,however,and werecharminglyplayed.Wenext heardwhatisconsideredthechief masterpieceofCesarFranck-the,Tre. ludeChoraleandFugue."Thiswork oftheBelgian-bornmasterwascomposedwhenhewasover60.andwas theoutcomeofanintentiontowrite apreludeandfugueinthestyleof Bach.Thechoralewasanafterthought.Inthelastmovementthe themeofthechoraleiswovenwiththe subjectofthefugue,andthemusic movestoafinaltriumph.Ithought thattherewasanoccasionalmoment orsowhenthesoloistwasnotquiteat ease.Hertechniquewasadmirable, buttheredidnotseemtobethesame grippingcontinuityandprecisionthat wassomuchinevidenceinthenext item,whichwasBeethoven'sSonatain FMinor,Op.57,universallyknownby thetitleof"Appassionata."Inmy opinionthiswasthehighlightofthe recital,andIdonotthinkMadame Currardsrenditionsufferedinanyway whenIconjuredacomparisonwith thoseofBackhausandMoiseivitch, whomIheardplayitsomeyearsago atHisMajesty's.
DonaldTovey,discussingthissonata, haspointedoutthatnootherwork byBeethovenmaintainsatragicsolemnitythroughoutallitsmovements. Ofthesetherearethree-theopening AllegroAssai,atremendoustorrential movementinsonataform;Andante conmoto,consistingofathemewith fourvariations,bringingthecontrast ofquiet-"adreamthatmustbe shattered,"saysTovey-leadinginto thefinalAllegromanon-troppo,anothermovementonthegroundscale and,likethefirst,constructedinsonataform.
NextweheardaChopingroup.The veryfamiliarandyetlovelyNocturne inCMinor,Mazurka,Op.50,No.1,in GMajor,andtheAFlatBallade.The lastmentionedimpassionedanddramaticcreationwasplayedwithadequatepoeticeffect,wellbalancedwith therequiredvigour.Lisztwasthe finalcomposerselected.Thegroup consistedofEtudeinFMinorandthe 12th.HungarianRhapsody.With theexceptionofNos.2,6,and12,we veryseldomhearanyoftheremaining 12HungarianRhapsodiesofLiszt.This isapity.

NotSi,longagoMr.GeorgeS.Kaufman,whoisgenerallyregardedasone ofthecleverestandwittiestofthecontemporaryAmericandramatists,tried outanewsatiriccomedyinWashington. Amildstirwascausedwhen theplaywassuddenlywithdrawnfor revision. Anotedcriticwhohadwitnessedtheopeningperformancewas askedwhatwaswrongwiththeplay. Hethoughtforamoment,thenansweied-simply:"Theydidn'tlaugh," Thepointtobenoted,ofcourse,is thattheappreciation,oftheaudience isthedecidingfactorinmakingany playasuccess.Thisopensupanalluringvistaofthemotleycrowdofcollaboratorstowhomasuccessfulmodernplayowesitsexistence;butmy purposeatthe'momentistoconfine myselftoafewoftheingredientsthat gotothemakingofaplay-whichmay betermednotonlysuccessfulbut great.
Inmyviewaplayisonlygreatwhen ithasstoodthetestoftime.This willmeanthatithastriumphantly survivedthepassageofmanygenerationswithchangingstandardsofculture,andcontinuestomakeitsuniversalappeal.,Suchaplayis"Macbeth,"or"Hamlet,"or"Othello."Not fornothingisShakespeareremembered asagreatdramatist.Thereisabout hisbestworksomethingtimeless;although,toquoteClaytonHamilton ("SoYou'reWritingaPlay!"),if anybodyhadsuggested,attheprime ofhiscareer,thatoneoranotherof hisplaysmightpossiblybereproducedbysomeothercompanyofactors afterhisowndeath,ormightbetranslatedintosomeotherlanguageand producedsuccessfullyinanycountry ofContinentalEurope,hewouldhave shakenhisgreatheadinFalstaffian laughter,andorderedanotherround ofale.attheMermaidTavern,and finallyhaveshouted,'Don'tbeaprodigiousfool!"
Ifwecanisolatethequalitiesthat givetoasuccessfulplayitscharacter ofpermanency,weshallbeontheway tofindingoutwhatmakesaplaygreat. Halfacenturyagotheeminent Frenchcritic,FerdinandBrunetiere, laiddownthefollowigndictum:
"Dramaistherepresentationofthe willofmanincontrasttothemysteriouspowerofnaturalforceswhich limitandbelittleus:itisoneofus thrownlivinguponthestage,thereto struggleagainstfatality,againstsocial law,againstoneofhisfellowmortals, againsthimself,ifneedhe,againstthe emotions,theinterests,thefolly,the malevolenceofthosearoundhim." Wemightreducethisstatementto thecommonlyacceptedaxiom:"No struggleno-drama."Itmeansin effectthatthedramamustdealwith anassertionofthehumanwilland preferablywithastrugglebetween humanwills.
IthasbeenarguedagainstBrunetiere'sformulathatitdoesnotcover thewholeground:itdoesnot,forexample,applytoShakespeare'scomedy, "AsYouLikeIt."Thereare,then, greatplayswhichdonotappearto befoundedonastrugglebetweenhumanwills.
Asanalternative,crisishasbeen namedastheessentialelementof drama.Tocomewithinthemeaning ofthetermdramaticeachindividual sceneoughttoexhibitatleastaminor crisis,andtheentirecomposition shouldberegardedasaseriesofminor crisesculminatinginamajorcrisis.
Notsatisfiedthattheideaofcrisis istheall-importantelementofdrama, afurtherschoolofthoughtinclines totheviewthatcontrastisevenmore essential.Insupportofthisclaimreferenceismadeto"Othello,"where thetwocentralfigures-Iagoandthe
Moor-provideapsychologicalcontrastwhichisfundamentaltothe tragedy.Itisclaimedthatthere cannotbeareallydramaticscenethat doesnotcontainsomeelementofcontrast-acontrastbetweenone'characterandanother,betweenonemood andanother,betweenonesetofideas andanother,etc. Characterisationisanotherplumin thepudding.VictorHugo,inhis prefaceto"RuyI3Ias"(1838),divided thetheatre-goingpublicintothe crowd,whodemandaction(Aristotle's primeessentialof,thedrama),the women,whodesirepassion,andthe thinkers,whoseekforcharacterisation. Heestimatedthatthethinkerswould alwaysbeintheminority,andthat whathecalled"thecrowd"wouldalwaysbeinthemajority.Duringthe pastcenturythetheatre-goingpublic inmostcountrieshasundergonea transformation,andtheproportionof feminineonlookershassoincreased astoprettywellobliterateHugo'sdistinctionbetweenthewomenandthe crowd.Followinghisleadwemight say,then,thataction,motivatedby passion,withanecessarymodicumof characterisation,mustberegardedas theprimeessentialforaplay.
Summarisingandco-ordinatingthe theoriesoutlinedabove.ClaytonHamiltonwrites:"Itwouldseemtobeadvisabletopickoutcharactersthat shouldpresenttotheassembledpublicaconstantcontrastofmutuallyfoilingpersonalities.Thesecharacters shouldexpressthemselveseasilyin action;andtheiractionsshouldbe motivated.wheneverpossible,byemotionratherthanbyintellectualdetermination.Theprogressoftheplay should,ifpossible,exhibitaseriesof minorcrises,culminatinginamajor crisisToleaninthedirectionofthe
sideofsafety,itwillbewelltoinsist ineverysceneuponsomeassertionof thehumanwill.Finally,ifthedramatist,dealingwiththematerials thathavebeencatalogued,canmanagetosetthemforthinsuchskilfully devisedformandorderastoevokea vividresponsefromtheavailabletheatre-goingpublic,hemaysucceedin accomplishingthemiraclewhichmust alwaysberegardedasthegoalofthe dramaticart."

One"OurFather,"one"HailMary," andtheinvocation,St.FrancisXavier, prayforus,"daily.Averysimple andeasilyfulfilledobligation,youwill say.Andsoitis-butforthisrea. sonthattheChurchwishesmembershipoftheSocietytobewithinthe reachofall,youngandoldalike,for itisherearnestdesirethatallbecome members.Whatatremendoussignificancethesesimpleandbriefprayers assumewhenweenvisagetheworld's 400millionofCatholicsrecitingthem faithfullyeachday.Whataveritable stormingofheavenonbehalfofthe Mission's.
Atthismomenttherearehundreds ofthousandsofyoungmenwearing theuniformsofthevariousservices. Youwillfindtheminlonelyoutpost andbusycity,upanddownthisvast continent.Yes!andbeyond.On sea, whereverthere isfightingtobedone,youwillfind them.Werecognisethatthesemen arenotriskinglifeandlimb,subjectingthemselvestoseverediscipline,and togravedangerforsomethingthat concernsthemselvesalone.Weknow thattheyarefightingourbattle,that theyareinmanycasesenduringuntoldhardshipsinorderthatwemight liveaswehavelived,orchangewhat shouldbechangedinourownway andbyourownfreewill.Knowing allthat,wefreelyadmitthenecessity ofprovidingourarmedforceswithall thingsnecessaryforthesuccessful prosecutionofthewar.Wedonot expect,indeedwedemand,thatit mustnotbenecessary,forthesemen tofindtheirownfood,theirown transport.No!theyhaveelectedto dotheactualfighting,wewhoremain athomelookuponitasourdutyto supplythemwithalltheyneedfor theirtask,evenatthecostofgreat sacrificetoourselves.NowifwerecallChrist'scommandtoHisChurch, thattheGospelmustbepreachedto everycreature,wewillreadilyrecognisethattheBishops,Priests,Nuns andBrothersoftheMissionaryarmy oftheChurcharenotcarryingontheir world-widecampaignasakindofprivateenterprise.Itistheaffairof thewholeChurchofwhichweare members.TheseMissionariesare,so tospeak,thefrontlinesoldiersofthe Church,we,thecivilians.Theyhave beencalledtofulfiltheobligationof extendingChrist'sKingdomonearth inthefrontlineofbattle,ourdutylies behindthelines-butadutyitis nevertheless.Thedutyofseeingto itthatthesemenandwomendonot havetoleavetheirpoststoseekfor themselvesthosethingsthatarenecessaryforthecontinuationofthestruggle.Now,howcanwebestachieve thisend?TheChurchhasprovided uswithameansatoncesimpleand effective-theSocietyofthePropagationoftheFaith.Becauseinthis matterwearedealingwiththethings ofGod,prayermusttakethefirst place.Wemustprayforthesuccess ofanenterprisethatisundoubtedly ours,aswellastheMissionary's:we mustprayforthesoldiersoftheCross thatGodmightgivethemthe strengthtocarryoninspiteofdifficultiesand,ifneedbe,todie,as

ThroughmembershipoftheSociety forthePropagationoftheFaith,then, withitstwo-foldobligation-spiritual and.material-weareofferedtheopportunityofeasily,butnevertheless eaectiveiy,assistingintheworkofextendingtheKingdomofChriston earth.Withoutleavinghomeor countrywecanreachoutahelping handtothebravemenandwomen wholabourintheforeignmission fieldsoftheChurch.Byourindividualco-operationwecan,makethe SocietywhattheChurchdesiresand intendsittobe,anunfailingstorehouseofspiritualandmaterialgoods towhichthehard-workedmissionary cancomeinconfidenceinhishourof need.
Andlestweshouldendeavourto seekrefugefromourobligationsin thismatterintheoldadage,"Charity beginsathome,"itisinterestingto recallthatbyspecialarrangementwith theHolySee,one-thirdofthefunds collectedbytheSocietyforthePropagationoftheFaithinAustraliaare retainedherefordistributionamongst theaboriginalmissions,andtoassist intheworkofprovidingthepeoplein theoutbackwiththeconsolationsof theirreligion.InourownArchdiocesewehavebeenenabled,through helpreceivedfromtheSocietyforthe PropagationoftheFaith,toface,at last,aproblemwhichhasexistedfor alongtime,theproblemofourhalfcastepopulation.Arrangementsare almostcompletefortheopeningofSt. FrancisXavier'sNativeMissionat WanderingBrook,nearNarrogin.The projectcouldnothavebeenconsider. edwereitnotforthefinancialassistancealreadygiven,andwhatisperhapsmoreimportant,theguaranteeof continuedhelpfromthePropagation oftheFaith. Inthelightoftheforegoingfacts andprinciplesthathavebeengleaned fromthepagesofSacredScriptures, everyChristianmanandwomanmust agreewiththegrandandgloriousendeavourofthelatePopePiusXI., thatofpubliclyandproudlyreinvestingourSaviourwithHisinalienable titleofKing,whichadisloyalworld hassoughttodepriveHimof.The HolyFatherknewfullwellthatunlessmankindadoptstheadviceofSt. Paul,"torestoreallthingsinChrist," thereisnohopeoftruepeaceforindividualsornations,intimeorineternity.
Hence,theFatherofChristendom askedhischildrentohailourSaviour asKingofthesocialorder;King,that is,notmerelyinspiritualmatters,or oftheinnersanctuaryofthesoul,but Kingofthehome,oftheschool,the university,Kingofthehallsofcommerce,oftheCourtofJustice,ofthe Parliamentsofthenations-Sovereign, inoneword,ofallsociety.
Thenationshave,ingreatpart,committedmoralsuicide,andliebleeding anddead,justaslongago,whenthe Redeemercalledthemforthfromthe tomb,whereinLazarus-like,theylayin corruption.But,thewordsofSt. Paulresoundthroughouttheworldtoday:"JesusChrist,yesterday,to-day, andthesameforever,"andremindus thattheomnipotentandmercifulKing ofmenislongingtoquickenintolife, nationsandindividualsthathavelong sincebeendeadtosupernaturalfaith andloyaltytotheirSovereignRedeemed.Butunswervingfidelityto themandatesofthgChrist-Kingen-
shrinedinthepagesoftheGospelis essentialtothisworkofpermanent amelioration.TheGospeloftheKing isthetrueframeworkofsociety,withoutwhichsocietymustfalltopieces throughthedisintegratinginfluences ofnaturalismandsin.TheKingship ofChrist,implyingasitdoesofnecessityloyaltytoHimastheKingof TruthandLoveandPeace,mustbe thestandard,thephilosophyoflife, amongstnationsandindividuals.
ChrististheKingofTruth,for,has Henotsaid:"IamtheWay,the Truth,andtheLife."AnddidHenot definethenatureofHisKingshipwhen HesaidtoPilate:"ForthiswasI born,andforthisIcameintothe world,thatImightgivetestimonyof thetruth."
Hence,theworldmustacceptwith unwaveringtenacitythegreatsupernaturaltruthsthatHehasrevealed, andthathasbeendepositedinthenew "ArkoftheCovenant,"thatsacred shrine,richwiththesplendourofeternalanddivinetruth-theOne,Holy, CatholicandApostolicChurch.CardinalNewman,inhisimmortalsermon on"TheSecondSpring,"speaksofthe sacredformoftruth-asbeinghacked piecemealbythemurderousblowsof heresyandindifference,andthistragedyisbeingreanactedatthepresent daybythosewhoproclaimthat"one religioni'sasgoodasanother,"In faceofsuchassertionsmaywenot askwithSt.Paul,inhisEpistletothe Corinthians,"IsChristthendivided?"
ChristisKingoflegislatorsanexemplaroftheirlaws.HiseternalLaw shouldbethepatternaccordingto whichalljustandpeneficentlegislationmustbefashioned.Hence,isit notacriminalderelictionofdutyfor therepresentativesofaChristianpeopleinanylandtointroducemeasures thatbanishChristtheKingofTruth andWisdomfromtheschoolorthe University,ortopassso-calledlauds thatsubverttheprinciplesofChristianity?Inaword,educationwithoutreligionisareturntopaganism, andthoseresponsibleforsuchatravestyoftruthandmoralityproclaim inecect,ifnotinword,'wehaveno KingbutCaesar!
Again,surelyeverylawmadefor theconductofChristianlifeshould beartheimpressofthesealofChrist, theKingofLegislators.Hence,itfollowsthateverymeasurethatdisregardsthesupernaturalsanctityofmarriage,ortendstoloosenitsbinding force,isaninsulttotheKing,who raisedthisunionoflovingheartsto thedignityofaSacrament.
Finally,HeisaKingofLove."God islove,"saystheinspiredSt.John, andJesusChristisGod.Allearthly loveisbutatinydew-dropdistilled fromtheinfiniteoceanofHisHeart's love.Theloveofhusbandandwife, motherandchild,brotherandsister,is aroyalgifttomanfromtheKingwho fashionedthehumanhearttolove. But,hasHenotsaidintheGospelthat hewholovesfatherandmother,brotherandsisterbeforeHim,isnotworthyofHim.Hehasloveduswithan everlastinglove-alovethatbegan eternalagesbeforeanadoringmother bentoverusandprefsedustoher heart.Hehasissuedaroyalmandate thatweloveHiminreturn:"Thou shaltlovetheLord,thyGod,withthy wholeheart."Kingsofearthexact obedienceandsubmissionfromtheir

themlargelyfictitious.Onegrows tiredoftherepetition,butallthe experienceofChristianhistorygoesto provethatastablemoralityisimpossiblewithoutreligion.Andbefore Christianhistory,thestoryoftheJewishpeoplebearsidenticalwitness.
Itseemsstrangetohearapolitician tellthepupilsofasecularschoolthat theyoughttofearGod,forthatisthe oneplacewheretheywillneverhear anythingabot.tGod.Andifachild isnottaughtaboutGod,itisunreasonabletoexpectthathecaneitherlove orfearHim.Andifthisbasicreligiousfactiskeptfromachild,what adequatemotivecanbeofferedhim forgoodbehaviour?Willhereally honourtheKingofKings?Isnot theverygroundandsourceofallauthoritydeniedhim?
Thepreferenceofparentsforareligiousschoolisnotawhimorcaprice; itarisesfromdeepconvictionandparentialaffection.Thepresenteducationallegislationmakestheexerciseof parentaldiscretion,foundedonthe mostvalidconsiderations,theoccasion ofinequalityintheenjoymentofthe benefitsprovidedbytheState.The parentisadmittedtoequalityonlyon conditionthatheforegoeshisnatural rightandisfalsetohisconscience. Andifanyoneseekstomeasurethe strengthofCatholicfaithbythedepth ofCatholicpockets,Imightaddthat theCatholicschoolsalonehavecost over£50,000,000tobuildandmaintain.
Moreover,theelectoralmajorityis thedictatoroftheteachingtobegiven inaGovernmentschool,andalthough therehasnotbeenanystartlingexerciseofthatpower,yetthereisno fixedlimittothequestionsaround whichpopularcriesmightrange.Perhapsnogenerationinhistoryhashad morereasonthanourstodreadtheappallingpotentialitiesofeducation whenitisreducedtothelevelofan instrumentofpolicy.
Itcannotbetooinsistentlystressed thatthereasonfortheexistenceof thedenominationalschoolsisthata largeminorityofourpeoplei'ssincerelyunableinconsciencetoacceptthe secularistphilosophyandtheneutral schoolwhichisitsexpression.Nor canitbeclaimedthatthewholeissue
schools.Iquotefromthecelebrated leadingarticleof"TheTimes"ofFeb, ruary17,1940:
"InacountryprofessedlyChristian, andacountrywhich,atthemoment, isstakingitsallindefenceofChristianprinciples,thereisasystemof nationaleducationwhichallowsthe citizensofthefuturetohaveapurelyheathenunbringing.
"Itismischievousbecauseitencouragesthefallacythatessentialeduca. tioncanbecompletedbysecularinstructionalone,andthattheteaching ofreligionismerelyakindofoptional supplement.Thetruth,ofcourse,is thatreligionmustformtheverybasis ofanyeducationworththename,and thateducationwithreligionomitted isnotreallyeducationatall."

Likewise,thetitles,"StateSchool" and"PublicSchool,"aremisnomers, becausetheseinstitutionshaveno righttoanamewhichsuggestsan exclusiveclaimtoStatefavourorassistance.Theentiregenerationof -futurecitizensisequallyentitledtothe patronageoftheState.
Tothiscriticismitmaybeobjected thatadequateprovisionismadeinthe variousEducationActsforallchurchestogivereligiousinstructionto theirchildreninStateschools.This isaviewwecannotaccept,forit restsuponamisconceptionofthepurposeandscopeof07aristianeducation.Religioncannotberegardedas an"extra"likemusicandsport.It mustbeintegratedintoeverystudyandactivity.Theformationofa Christianpersonalityisbeingcarried onallthetime.Thewholeorganisationoftheschool,thepersonalityof theteachers,thespiritandscopeof thesyllabus,theatmospherepermeatingboththeschool-roomandthe sportsfield-allthese,inourview,can be,andshouldbe,informedbyChristianprinciples.
Bltagaintheobjectionarisesthat someChristianbodiesarequitesatisfiedwiththeStatesystem.This claim,Ithink,isincreainglyuntrue. Whilesomeofthereligiousbodiesdid admittedlyabandontheirownschools whenthesecularsystemwasfirst mooted,thereareto-daygroWingsigns ofremorse.Forinstance,asub-committeeoftheAnglicanChurchreported totheSynodinSydney.in1937:"The ChurchofEnglandhasceasedtobuild separatedenominational-schools,and rindsitself,throughacceptanceofthe governmentpolicy,placedinapOsition ofgreatdisadvantage."'Asamatter ofpracticetheamountofreligiousinstructionthatcanbegiveninState schoolsisverylimitedindeed,andI doubtifitexceedsonehalf-hourper week.Inthisconnectionitmaybe interestingtonotetheawakeningin Britainoftheneedofreligioninthe

Secularism,besidesbeingtheMother ofNeutrality,pridesitselfuponbeing theMotherofProgress.ButinAustraliaithasturnedouttobeasad caseofretardeddevelopment.For inthemothercountriesandinother partsoftheEmpire,itisnotaconditionoftherighttoenjoymoneysprovidedbypublicauthoritiesforeducation,thattheparentsshouldyield theirprivatejudgmenttothewillof theState.Thereisnopremiumon servility.IntheBritishIsles,Newfoundland,Malta,theWestIndies, Cyprus,Palestine,TropicalAfrica, SouthAfrica,India,Ceylon,Burma, Malaya,Mauritius,andHongKong, theBritishGovernmentisatworkin theeducationalfieldamongahundred differentraceswithendlessvariations oflanguages,cultureandcomplication ofcircumstances.Yeteverywhere thereisarecognisedprinciplethatreligiousneutralityimplies,notsecularism,butanevenjusticetowardsall religiousbodiesinthefieldofeducation,insofarastheirdemandsare rnatiblewithpublicorderandefficiencyofinstruction.TheBritish
authorities,farfromattemptingtoexcludereligionfromschoolsaidedby Government,haverathersoughttoencouragethestrengtheningofthereligiousandethicalfoundationsofeducation,asnecessarytothehealthy moraldevelopmentofthecommunity. Whereasecularsystemhasbeenset up,itisbecause,foroneoranother reason,ithasbeenimpossibletofind anyothersolutiontotheproblem,as, forexample,inIndia.But,wherever ithasbeenpossibletoenlisttheaid andsupport-ofreligioussocietiesin education,themottohasbeentostimulatetheirworkbyco-operation,while securingbysupervisiontheimprovementandhigherorganisationofthe purelysecularsideoftheirinstruction. Nowhere,exceptinAustraliaandNew Zealand,dowefindarefusalofassistancetoreligiousbodies,andinclude religiousinstructionasanintegral partofthecurriculum.Toadopt thissecularprinciplei'snottrueneutrality.Itisanti-religioussectarianism,sinceitpenalisestheChristian school,andgivesacorrespondingadvantagetothekindofeducationin whichreligionisdisregardedandits importanceignored.Thosewhopro- testagainst"Governmentaidtosectarianteaching"areprotestingagainst asystemwhichiseminentlyBritish, andwhichisfoundineverylandover whichtheBritishflagflies,savein thesetwoDominionsofthePacific, andtheyaresupportingaformofeducationwhichhasshownitself,whether InEuropeorhere,totendtowards thedestructionofthatspiritualculture whichisthebasisofalltruecivilisationandofallsoundcitizenship.

Favouredwiththepatronageofthe MostRev.Dr.Prendiville,Archbishop ofPerth,andwith.HisGrace'sbeau, tifulCupasaperpetualtrophy,the ChristianBrothers'SecondarySchools' Association'sannualsportsgathering alwavgattractsalargeattendanceof ourCatholicpeople.Thisyear'sfunction,heldattheW.A.C.A.onSaturday,October14,wasprobablythe mostsuccessfulinthehistoryofthe Association.Therewasarecord crowd,includingseveralofthemetropolitanclergy,theLordllayor(Dr. T.Meagher),andalargenumberof ChristianBrothers,amongwhomwas Rev.BrotherDoyle,oftheChristian Brothers'ExecutiveCouncil,ofSydney.Itwasamostdelightfulafternoontobeoutofdoors,althoughthe strongheadwindhamperedtherunnerssomewhat.HighgateandLeedervillerepeatedtheirsuccessesofthe previousyear,buttI4issuewasin doubtrightuptothefinish,The W.A.AmateurAthleticAssociation. whichconsidersthesesportsamost fruitfulnurseryoffutureStatechampions,againcontrolledthemeeting. Sixnewrecordswereestablished,four byHighgateandtwobyLeederville.
Severaloftheday'schampionswill worthilyrepresentourCatholiccollegesattheSchoolBoys'StateChampionshipsattheLeedervilleOvalon November11.
