Duringitsfiftyyearsofservicein theinterestsoftheyouthofthecommunity,St.Patrick'sBoys'Schoolhas establishedanexcellentrecordinthe educationalsphere.Further,and stoveall.theChristianBrothershave succeededinimpartingtothehundredswhohavepassedthroughtheir schoolafearofGodandaloveof HolyChurch.

Fiftyyearsisnotalongspaninthe lifeofanoldnation,butitisalong spaninthelifeoftheYoungWest; anditisaverylongspaninthelife ofaschoolintheSouthernHemisphere.Aschoolengagedintraining andmouldingcharactersisdoinga workofthehighestnationalimportance-aworkwithoutwhichanation couldnotthrive.Butthisschoolwas foundedbythesaintlyBishopGibney totrainboysnotonlyforthisworld, buttotrainthemtolookbeyondthis materialworldtotheirultimatedestiny-God.

Theboundariesoftheinhabited partsofPerthof1894wouldbe,roughly,theRiver,Newcastle-street,Milligan-street.andBennett-street.There wasnothingbutbushbetweenWellingtonSquareandtheriver,except thecemetery.Tallgracefulgumtrees stoodwhereHay-streetnowcrosses Thomas-streetTherewasbutone housevisiblefromSubiacoRailway Station.

ItwasonSeptember17,1894,that theChristianBrothers,attheinvitationofMostRev.Dr.Gibney,took chargeofSt.Patrick'sBoys'Schoolin Irwin-street,onthesiteofthepresent FireBrigadeHeadquarters.The schoolwastheninchargeofMr.John Barry.ThelateMonsignorBourke alsotaughthereforsometime.

ReverendBrotherPascalConnolly wasappointedfirstheadmaster.He isstillaliveandwellinhisnative country,Eire.HisassistantwasRev. erendBrotherBradley,nowonthe staffoftheChristianBrothers'College, Fremantle.

Theoldschool,asitwasfamiliarly known,wasGothicindesign-veryunlikeamodernschool.Itconsistedof amainhall,sub-dividedbyapartition intotwolargecrassrooms.Ithad threeentrances,themainonefacing Irwin-street,andtwotowardstherear ofthebuilding.Abuttingthesenior

classroomweretwolargeanterooms, oneusedasarelievingclassroomand theotherasagymnasium.Thearea forrecreationwascongested,forall adjoiningpropertieswerebuilton. HeretheBrotherstaughtuntil1907. BrotherDavidQuigley(RIP.)had beenheadmasterforsomeyearsprevioustothis.Thestaffin1903comprisedtwoChristianBrothersandtwo layteachers.Theschoolwasdivided intosenior.comprisingfourthandfifth grades;andjunior,withthirdandsecondgrades.Theoldschoolbecame over-crowded.Dr.Gibneyselected thesitewheretheschoolnowstands. Thisbuildingwasplannedby,and erectedunder'thesupervisionofthe lateMr.J.Cavanagh,architect,of Perth.TheblessingandofficialopeningwasperformedbyArchdeacon Smyth,astheBishopwastheninillhealth.Therewerestillfouronthe staffandtherollwasnow180.There wasample'spaceforall.

In1936HisGraceMostReverendDr. R.Prendivillehadanewandsubstantialfenceerected,thelawnslaidout, theschoolpainted,theplayingarea bituminised,withgranolithicfootpaths aroundtheschool.Aspecialroom fortheJuniorExaminationClasswas constructedinthebigplayingshed.

Betweentheyears1912and1919.underthebuidanceofRev.BrothersMurphy(R.I.P.)andBlake(nowinSydney).therollreachedthe300mark. Thisnecessitatedanincreaseoftwoin thestaff,andanadditionalclassStandardSix.Rev.BrotherRedmond(AquinasCollege)tookcharge forashorttime,tobefollowedby BrotherR.Wexted(St.Joseph'sFarm, Bindoon),whostayedforthreeyears. Hedidmuchfororganisedsport.The mostoutstandingheadmasterwas Rev.BrotherGregoryDownes(RIP.) whostayedfornineyears.Apartfrom thesuccessheachievedwithhiswonderfulchoirs,hereorganisedtheschool. TheJuniorExaminationClasswasintroduced,andthetwoyears'preparatoryclassesfirmlyestablished.St. Patrick'sshowedtoadvantageinthe educationalworld.BrothersWalsh, O'Connor,andMaguirewerenextin charge.

In1936theschoolhadreachedarecordcall-450.HisGracecausedC.B. College,Highgate,tobeopened,tobe followedbyC.B.College,Leederville. whichopeningsconsiderablyrelieved thepresXure.

NowthesearetheeightBeatitudes whichformthefirstpartoftheSermon,ontheMount,Theyarethe moralfoundationof"thekingdoin;" theyareanexpressionoftheidealsof Christianlife.Firstofall,inthemis emphasisedthespiritualnatureof Christ'sKingdom;thehappinessmentionedineachofthemisfoundedin detachmentfrommaterialthings.Let ustake,forexample,thefirstone: "Blessedarethepoorinspirit." A manis"poorinspirit"whoisdetachedinhisattitudetoworldlyposses sions;whoseesthemonlyasameans ofgainingtheKingdomofHeaven. NoteChrist'sphrase:"thepoorin spirit."Actualpovertyisnotthe key:amansunkinpovertycanbe veryfarfrompoorinspirit;arich mancanmakearightuseofhispossessions-althoughwehaveOurLord's wordforitthathewillfindthetask anextremelydifficultone.

Moreover,inV.4,herefersbackto Daniel,andthusshowsthatheis usingatraditionallanguage.ThisremindsusthatChristHimselfusedthe sametraditionallanguagewhenspeakingofthedestructionofJerusalemand theendoftheworld:"Whentherefore youseetheabominationofdesolation, whichwasspokenofbyDanielthe prophet,standingintheholyplace:he thatreadeth,lethimunderstand" (Matt.XXIV.,15).

Now,withoutgoingintodetails,we say'saythatthelanguageusedby Danielbecamethesourceofarecognisedstyleinapocalypticwritings. Anditmaybenotedthattheseand othersimilarreadingsfromtheOld Testamentdonotsaythattherewill beanindividualAntiChristattheend oftime:equallyitmaybesaidthat,in greatpart,theyrefertoaperennial strugglebetweentheforcesofgoodand theforcesofevil.

3.TheApocalypse.Keepingin mindwhathasbeensaidalready,let usconsiderit.

Inthisbookthereisafundofmaterialforaninterpretertoworkupon: unfortunately,ithasbeenapreytointerpretersofallsorts,Manyofthem useitstextstoillustratetheirpreconceivedtheories,sometimesinafantasticway;whileawrongtwisthasbeen

giventoitsmeaning-byinterpreting St.John'swordsasiftheyrefereedto anhistoricalsequenceofevents.

Whereaswemaysafelysaythatin thefirstpartofthebook-uptochapter12-St.Johnisspeakinginageneralsenseofthegreatstrugglebetween GodandHisadversaries,althoughhe illustrateshisthemebyallusionsto contemporarypersonsandevents,the EmperorNero,forexample.Inthe restofthebookheismoreexplicit. Wehave,forexample,theattackof theDragonupontheMessiah;thewar wagedupontheDragonunderthe leadershipoftheArchangelMichael: thestruggle,onearth,betweenthe Beastfromtheseaandhisdelegate theBeastfromtheland;themystic numberoftheBeast.Now,although St.John,nodoubt,hashiseyeson concreteexamples,wearebroughtto theconclusionthattheseexamples,in hismind,representthepersecuting powersofalltheages;thepersonshe hadinmindwerethemselvespersecutors,hutalsotypes.Attheend,toweringabovethemall,werethefigures ofthetwogreatprotagionists,'Michael andSatan.

ThePresidentoftheMarianArts Guild.PatEvans,inherpaperonArt andtheHouseholdofNazareth,began byposingtheveryfundamentalquestion:WhatisArt?andansweredit withthedefinitionofthelateEric Gill,thatArtprimarilymeansskill, theexerciseofhumanskillandimaginationineverydepartmentofhuman work.Tograspthisfactistorealise thatinasocietycomposedofpeopleresponsibleforwhattheydoandmake "theartistisnotaspecialkindofman, buteverymanisaspecialkindpfartist:"thatArtissomethingthat shouldanddoesaffectoureveryday creativeworkineventhehumblestof vocations,andisnotsomethingconfinedtoproducingthepricelesstreasuresofArtGalleries.

ThisfalseconceptionofArtasreferringonlytotheFineArtsmaybe tracedtotwothings,theRenaissance andIndustrialRevolution.TheRenaissancesawtheriseofindividualismin painting,sculptureandmusic,while theIndustrialRevolution,orthewidespreadintroductionofthefactorysystem.broughtaboutthedivorceofpersonalityfromtheworkofproducing food,clothing,andthenecessaryor usefulthingsinlife,Anexaggerated valueiwasplacedonthoseartsnot subjecttothisfactoryorganisation, suchassculpture,musicaridpainting, andwehavenowthedistinctionbetweenartandfinearts.

Eventhefinearts,orthosethat pramarilyservethemind,nowaim onlytogivepleasure.Ifwehavea paintingoftheMadonnainourPublic Gallery,itistherenotbecausethe painterhassucceededinconveyinga clearerviewofhersignificance,butbecausehehassucceededinmakinga speciallypleasingarrangementofmaterials.Thereshouldbereasonin allourworks:pleasureperfectsawork, butitshouldnotbetheobjectofworking,becausetruehappinessliesinthe knowledgeofthingswelldoneandnot inthesatisfactionofsense,however refined.

Actuallyartgovernstherelationship betweentheworkofmakingthingsand thedevelopmentofyourpersonality. Thecarpenterwhouseshisskillinthe makingofwhatisuseful.physicallyis asmuchanartistasthesculptorwho useshisskillinthemakingofwhatis usefulmentally.Ifartisthewell makirigofwhatisneeded,whether chairsandtablesorpaintingsand sculptures,thenfromthepointofview ofArtthereisnodividinglinebetween

suchthingsas-poetryandmusicand theworkofblacksmithsandcarpen ters.Allthingsshouldworktogether forourgood,andallworkshouldhave asitsfinalcause,itsend,oursanctification.Theobjectoflifeitselfisman's sanctification,andlabour,beingthe meansoflife,istheappointedmeans toholiness.Artisthevirtuebywhich weperfectthatlabour,sothatartis thehandmaidofreligion.

Thosewhoseobjectiontomanual labouristhattheyconsideritdegradingwillfindtheanswertotheirobjectioninastudyoftheHouseholdof Nazareth.HereweseetheMaster ArtistHimselfatworkinacarpenter's shop.dailymakingtoGodtheofferingofaperfectlabour:usingHisskill intheperfectionofHisworkthatHis offeringmightbeamoreperfectprayer.IfwecouldseefromHisexamplethatthereisdignityinallwork thatisnecessarytolife,forinthat workliessomeone'smeanstoholiness, wewouldmorereadilyagreethatart isanecessarypartofthatworkifit istobewelldone.

Thoseagainwhoregardthefine artsastheonlyrealmeansofselfexpressioncannotbeawareofthefact thatselfexpression,thedevelopment ofimaginationandthedevelopment ofpersonality,aretheinevitableaccompanimentsofallhumanworknor mallyaccomplished.Itismainly throughourworkthatwedevelop ourpersonality.Alltheartsoflife -farming,preparingoffood,housework,building,everythingthataffects oureverydaylife-alltheseoccupationsarenotonlyourchiefmeansto theenjoymentoflife,buttheystill are,andalwayshavebeen,thechief meansavailabletousforourspiritual expression.WeshouldpraiseGodin ourwork.fortolabourshouldbeto pray.Wewillfindthetruthofthis fromafurtherstudyoftheHousehold ofNazareth.

Nocreaturehaseverunderstoodor appreciatedmorefullythebeautyor God'screationthanOurBlessedLady. Moreover,sheunderstoodperfectly thepurposeofcreation,however'thinginthisworldismeantinsome waytohelpustoknowGod,forwe knowGodthroughallHisworksand shouldseeHimreflectedinallcreation.Herappreciationofthebeautifulwassomuchdeeperthanthatof thegreatestartist,forshewasnot merelyappreciatingthebeautyofsome inanimatething,butthebeautyof the'MindofGodtheCreator,andfor thisappreciationshefoundnota means,butaperfectmeansofexpressioninherworkasahumbleHousewifeofNazareth.Seeingincreation, inherownexistenceandinallthat Godhadgivenher,avisibleevidence ofHisgreatloveforher,OurLady wasonlytoohappytoturntoher work,herdailydutiesintheHouseof Nazareth,asthenaturalmeansof thankingHimforeverything.Herlife amongstthepotsandpansbecamein thatsensea"eucharistic"life-alife ofthanksgivingandoflove,andthe artistinherfoundfullexpressionin theperfectionwithwhichsheperformedeachtaskinherdailyroutine.She foundinherdomesticwork,inother words,ameansofexpressingherfeelings-ofthankingGodforHisgreat love:andbecauseoftheperfection withwhichsheperformedeventhe humblesttasks,shefoundintheir doing,togetherwiththemysterious workingsofgrace,adevelopmentof herownpersonalitythatreachedperfectionuntil,throughmakingclothe, (ContinuedonPage13.)

"InThisOurLife,"attheCapitol.is basedonastoryofEdnaMitchell,not tobeconfusedwiththeMargaret.Mitchell,whogaveus"GoneWiththe Wind."Noristhisfilminthesame classasthatepicofhumanendurance, norofotherofthemorerecentpsychologicalnovelsofthesametypewhich readilycometomind.

Thestoryfeaturesanirresponsible, high-spiritedgirl(BetteDavis),who runsawaywithhersister'shusband (DennisMorgan)on,theeveofher ownmarriagetolawyerGeorgeBrent. Theyleadwhatwasapparentlymeant torepresentacat-and-doglife,until Morganshootshimself,andBettereturrishometofindhersisterandformerfianceengaged.Tormentedbyjealousyandfrustration,Bettecontinues tohitthehigh-spotsuntil,afterahitand-runaccident,sheiskilledina carsmashtryingtoeludethepolice.

TheobservanceofSundaynextthroughouttheArchdiocese asSocialJusticeSu.idayfollowstheprecedenceofthepastfive yearsinthatthepulpitaddressescentreaboutanOfficialStatementissuedbytheAustralianNationalSecretariatofCatholicAction.In1940theAustralianHierarchygavetheleadwiththe important"Bishops'Statement."TheprinciplesthereenunciatedwereamplifiedandappliedtotherealitiesoftheAustralianenvironmentinthethreefollowingyearsintheStatements:."Justice Now!""ForFreedom,"and"PatternforPeace."Thesewere unbitiousdocumentsaimingtocoverthemaintrendsoftheeconomic,socialandmorallifeofthenation.Theyrepresented braveconstructiveeffortstoalignAustraliannationallifewith theChristianwayoflife,andattractedveryconsiderableattention throughouttheCommonwealth.Moreover,itisnottoomuchto claim.thattheyhadimportanteffectsonsomeofthemostsignificantlegislationthathasbecomelawinthiscountryduringrecentyears.

Nowthattheboldcanvashadbeenoutlined,theAustralian NationalSecretariatofCatholicActionverywiselycommenced topaintinsomefinedetail.Anditwasnaturalthatastart shouldbemadewiththemostpressingofallproblems-familylife andpopulation-foritisanundisputedfactofhistorythatanationgrowsordeclinesaccordingasits-familylifegrowsordeclines. Anditistruealsothat"theshadowofdeathliesacrossthatland wherechildrenarefewandunwanted."Theinsidiousprocessof internaldecayhasbeengoingonforthepasthundredyeare,but itrequiredtheshockofwartomakemanyrealisethatnocasualty couldhesosevereasthatsustainedbythefamily.Somethinginfinitelypreciousandfundamentaltoourexistenceandprogressis slippingawayfromus.Catholicshavelongfoughttheseevilsunaided,andnowthatthenationisbecomingconsciousofitsperil itisfittingthatCatholicsshouldgivetheleadinputtingforward andhelpingtoimplementpositiveremedies.-

* TheStatementisdividedintofourchapterswhichdealrespectivelywiththeheadofthefamily.thewomanofthehouse,the childrenandthefamilyasawhole.Inregardtothebreadwinnerthereisinsistenceontheneedofsecuritycombinedwith freedom.Essentialconditionsforsecuringthefamilyincludethe paymentofanadequatefamilywage,preferenceformarriedmen, protectionagainstunemploymentbycontributoryinsurance schemes,co-operativeassociationsasagainstdolingoutsocialservices,andencouragementtoearlymarriageandlargefamilies. Thelotofthewifeandmotherispresentedasacareeroffirst-rate importance.Marriageloans,anincreaseinchildendowmentpayments.decenthousing.preferentialtreatmentforyoungchildren andmothers,greaterattentiontohealthproblems,andthediscouragementofdivorceareputforwardasessentialtorebuilding healthyfamilylife.Therightsofthechildtolife,tothefullcare ofitsparents,torationalsexinstruction,toself-disciplineandsolid moraltrainingreceivespecialemphasis.Hencetheneedsofthe familyaresummarisedaseconomicsecurity,moralintegrity,and socialwelfare.TheStatementconcludesby.showingtheresponsibilitythatrestsonmouldersofpublicthoughtinthisregardand ontheimmediatedutiesdevolvingonGovernments.

It\..a>report.'fromLondonduring theweekthlttheAnglicanBishopof ChelmsfordhadattackedrecentPapal utterancessuggestingthatLondoners shouldshowChristiansentimentsof charity,forgivenessandmercytowardstheGermanf,TheBishopwas furtherreportedassayingthat"itwas difficulttorememberasingleword romthePopeincondemnationofthe NaziswhentheysweptLondonwith destruction."Theseremarksareextremelybafflingfor,el'enweretheBishop'sclainistrue,itwouldnotthereby absolvetheBritishfromthedutiesof hristiancharity.ItisstrangedoctrineindeedthattheEnglishshallconsidertheTenCommandmentsasapplyingtothemselvesonlyiftheGermanscanbeshowntohaveobserved them.Catholic'saretaughtthatitis necessarytoloveone'sfellow-men,and ovenone'senemies,outoftheloveof Godandnotoutofaspiritofmutual re,iprocation.Thewholepointof Christ'scommandmentofcharityis thatenemiesexistandtheyarethe onestobeforgiven.Itisactually verydifficulttopractiseChristiancharitytowardsone'sfriends,becauseone can'thesurethatitisnotmerely naturalloveandaffection.Sothat theonlytestofthegenuinenessof supernaturalmotivesinthematterof charityliespreciselyintheforgiveness ofenemies.Ifwecanmanagethis wecanbereasonablycertainthatwe doloveGod.

Infact,however,theBishopwas hopeleSslyastray.Onecouldfilla fair-sizedvolumewithsternPapalcondemnationsof"totalwar"methodsand ofindiscriminatebombingofnoncombatantsinparticularcommencing fromtheveryoutbreakofhostilities andrepeatedmanytimessince.Nor

ItisallthestrangerthattheBishop shouldnotknowthesefacts,sincethe AnglicanandFreeChurchleadersof BritainhaveacceptedthePope's15 pointsofreconstructionwhichsummarisemanyoftheseutterances.Of course,theBishopdidnotpleadignorance.Hesimplysaiditwasdifficultforhimtoremember,Inwhich case,oneistemptedtosay,HisLordshipmightbemoreprofitablyengaged withPelmanthanwithPius.

Itseems,however,thatDr.Wilson's realconcernwaswiththe"widespread uneasiness..lesttheVaticanauthoritiesshouldsucceedinhavingasayin thepeacesettlement.Severalrecent incidentshaverousedthesefears.One ofthesurestwaystolosethepeace wouldbetopermitthedubiouscoml.

HisLordshipthenranriotabout Vaticanpoliticsbeingundemocratic anditsinterestsbeingservedbestbya Catholicdictator.Thereissomethingverynaiveaboutthisoutburst, forthesimplefactsarethattheprinciplesofVaticandiplomacyarethose oftheSermonontheMount,thatthe Churchdoesn'tcareabrassfarthing aboutpoliticalformsprovidedthey givereasonablelibertyofconscience, andthatinfacttheCatholicChurch doesworkundereverytypeofgovernmentthroughouttheworld.ThePope hasclaimedinourdaytobetheonly perfectlyimpartialmanonearth.and noonehasseriouslychallengedhis claim.AsfortheChurchbeingbest servedbyaCatholicdictatorship-this ismorethanalittlefunnywhenone recallsthatbothHitlerandMussolini wereonceCatholics.Fortherestit canonlybesaidthatiftheAnglican HierarchyofEnglandwereinvitedto thepeacetableandtheirpresence wouldguaranteeajustandlasting peace,nomanonearthwouldbemore gratefulormoregenerousinhispraise thanPiusXII.

Itisnotmyintentioninthisletter todetailthewonderfulworkofthe CatholicLawnTennisAssociationin cateringforCatholicyouth.Itseems necessary,however,tobringtheactivitiesofthisfineorganisationprominentlybeforetheCatholicpeople.

Sir,-Thoughtfulmenandwomen,especiallyparents,mustviewwithalarm theever-growingtendencyamongour youngpeopletothrowoffparentalcon trolinamaddesisetotastetheen joyments(???)heldbeforetheireyes byaworldthathasrunriotinthepursuitofpleasure.Thelimitedandin. nocentamusementswithwhichtheir mothersandfatherswerecontent,will nolongersatisfythedesiresofthesons anddaughtersofto-day.Ifparents raisetheirvoicesinprotest,theyare dubbedasold-fashionedbythemodem child,andtoooftentheaccusationsilencestheprotest.

Apartaltogetherfromthemoralaspect,andtheeffectofthismadrush inthepursuitofpleasure,onthesouls ofourCatholicgirlsandboys,which, afterall,isthemainconcernofthe. Church,weshuddertothinkofwhat maybeinstoreforourcountryin thenextgeneration,whentheYouth ofto-dayarethefathersandmothers ofto-morrow.Butasamansows soheshallreap.Themodernmaterialisticandpleasure-seekingyouth istheproductofamaterialisticand rationalisticsystemofeducation,and, forthat,weourselvesareentirelyresponsible.

Ifoursuccessivegovernmentsfail ouryouthinthematterofproviding foritsreligiouseducation,thatisall themorereasonforweCatholicpeople,evenatthecostofmuchsacrifice, toredoubleoureffortsandcarryon thatworknotonlyduringtheschoolgoingyearsofourboysandgirls,but alsoduringthatmuchmoredangerous periodoftheirlives,when,unexperienced,theygooutintoaGodlessand pleasure-filledworld.Yes!wemust followthembeyondthethresholdof ourCatholicschools,andleadthem safelythroughtheshoalsandrocks andbreakersthatbesettheirfraillittlebarques,untiltheyaresafely launchedontheopenseaofLife.If,

then,theysuffershipwreck,wewillbe freefromblame.Toabandonour youthimmediatelyontheirleaving ourschoolstothebanefulinfluenceof theworld,istoruntheriskofutterly undoingallthegoodthattheself-sacrificingeffortsofourCatholicteachers haveaccomplished.

Asitisprimarilythedutyofparentstotendtothephysicalandintellectualrequirementsoftheirchildren, so,also,isittheirdutytoseethatthe moralwelfareofthosecommittedto theircareisnotneglected.TheHome is,undoubtedly,theproperplacetolay thefoundationsonwhichthemoral characterofthechildistobebuilt. TheparentsaretheGod-appointed fashionersofthatcharacter.Unfortunately,manyparentsto-dayfailaltogetbertocarryoutthatsacredtrust. Othersaretoopronetotransferthat responsiiblityfromtheirownshoulders tothoseofothers.Tohelpparents inthatgreatworkoflayingafirm moralfoundation,soindispensabletoa Christianeducation,theChurchhas provideditsownschools,wherethe child'slifeispermeatedwiththat Christianatmospheresonecessaryfor thecultivationfortheseedsofvirtue.

Butifthesetenderplantsofvirtue aretowithstandthefirstchillingblasts oftheworld'stemptations,theshelteringprotectionoftheChurchmustbe affordedthemtilltheyaresufficiently rooted,andso,likethegiantoakof theforest,theycanwithstandthe fierceststormsofattack.

Ourboysandgirls,then,onleaving school,must,inthefirstplace,beenrolledinourChurchsodalities,our HolyNameSociety,andourChildren ofMaryConfraternities.Butthisis notsufficient.Wemustprovidefor theirleisurehoursifwearetoguard themfrombadassociationsandsinful habits.TheChurchmustcaterfor theiramusementsorseethemabsorbedinotherorgaisationswhereboth theirfaithandtheirmoralsareendangered.Herewemaywelllearna lessonfromthosewhoarefullyaliveto thenecessityofyouthorganisationsto carryontheirnefariouswork.WeCatholiclaymen,andwomenmustcarry onthatworkwhereCatholicschools havelaiditdown.Thisisadutywe owe,notonlytoourownchildren,not onlytotheChurch,ofwhichweire proudtobemembers,andtothe youth,thefuturemenandwomenof thisgreatland,butweoweitalsoto theself-sacrificingSistersandBrothers whoareworkingsoefficientlyandso selfishlyintheinterestsofourchildren.Wedarenotallowthatgreat worktobemarredorevendestroyed byourapathy.

What,then,arewetodo?Ourduty isplain.LetusorganiseourCatholic Youth.Withtheco-operationofour Priests,ourBrothersandourNuns, letusformourparochialyouthcentres,whereourCatholicboysandgirls canforegatherandenjoyunderproper supervisionthepleasuretowhich,as youngpeople,theyareentitled,and which,ifnotprovidedbyus,theywill seekelsewhereandunderconditions whichwillspellforthemmoraland physicalruin.TheheartrendingstoriesunfoldedinourChildren'sCourtsof boysandgirlsoftenderyearsalready grownoldincrime,isatlastbeginning toarousealethargicpublictotheseriousnessofthesituationthatthreatens ourcountry.Manyorganisationsare alreadyatworkintheinterestofour youngpeople,andunlessweCatholics bestirourselvesourCatholicboysand girlswillslipawayfromustobeabsorbedinotherassociations,manyof whichwill,nodoubt,beperforminga veryusefulwork,buttheprevading spiritwillbeworldlyandmaterialistic, andsoswillconstituteadangertothe faithofourCatholicyouth.

Theworkisindeedaformidableone, andsacrificeofthehighestorderwill berequiredtocarryitthrough,butit isnotimpossible.Itisaworkfor God,forthesalvationofimmortal souls,andso,manco-operating,God willcrownitwithsuccess.Wecan calluponthewonderfulorganisations thatalreadyexistinourCatholiccommunities,ourChildrenofMary,that wonderfulsocietyoftheLegionof Mary,ourCatholicSocialGuild.Our Catholicfriendlysocietieswouldhelp inthisgreatworkofCatholicYouth Organisation.TheLeagueofCatholic YouthandtheCatholicGirls'Movementhavebeenformedforthatpur-

"Favourisdeceitfulandbeautyis vain."Isthiswhatthemodern, fashionable,illustratedmagazinestell us?Ifthiswhatthecinemaandthe theatreproclaim?Farfromit.The oppoSiteistheircreed-justtheopposite.But,thewordsoftheHoly Writermuststandagainstthemaxims oftheworld;theymuststandand provetheworldwrong.Andthey do."Favourisdeceitfulandbeautyis vain."Ifhistoryteachesusanylesson,itsurelyteachesthatthesewords aretrue.Weneednotlookforillustrativeexamplesinthelivesofthe saints.Wefindtheminthepagesof profanehistory.Dotheynotoften tellusofmenandwomen,highlyfavouredbythemightyonesoftheworld, whofellfromgraceovernight?Do theynotrevealtousthatmostbeau. tifulfaceswereoftenbutmasksscreeningfromviewexecrablelives?But whyappealtopasthistory?Weneed onlyopenoureyesandlookatthings intheirproperlightasaChristian shouldlookatthemtoseethat"Favourisdeceitfulandbeautyisvain." Perhapsweourselveshaveexperiencedthetruthofthesewords.Thefact thatthevastmajorityofhumansdis-1 agreeorappeartodisagreewiththe HolyGhostinthismatterisnoproof againstthetruthofHiswords.As OurBlessedLordwouldsay:"Alltake notthisword,buttheytowhomitis given,"Andwhoaretheytowhom itisgiven?Youknowthem.We callthem"Nuns."Thesearethe privilegedwomenwhowiththehelpof Godhaverealisedthat,"Favourisdeceitfulandbeautyisvain,"that"the womanthatfeareththeLord;she shallbepraised."Thesearethechosenwomenwho,risinghighabovethe folliesoftheworld,consecratetoGod thatwhichtheirSistersoftheworld appreciatemost.

Thismorningwearegatheredhere tobarewitnessoncemoretothefact thatthewordsofmytextarenot beingwhisperedbytheHolyGhost intodeafears.Weareheretosee yetanotherwomanwhothinksnothing

ofworldlyfavour,whomakesnothing ofnaturalaccomplishments,andwhose onlyambitionistobecomeworthyof beingpraisedbyGod.Thesimple butsignificantceremonytobeperformedbeforeoureyesinatewmoments'time,betraysasoulwhomthe fearoftheLordpossesses. Isaid "fear,"butImeant,ofcourse,that fearwhichispartandparceloftrue love;thatfearwhichimpelsasoulto flyfromthedangersandoccasionsof offendingGod,soplentifulinthe world,andtotakerefugeinthesafe shelterofareligioushouse.

Theinspiredwriter,whomIhave quotedsooften,askselsewhereinthe samechapter:"Whoshallfindavaliantwoman?farandfromtheuttermostcoastsisthepriceofher."Let meremarkthatsinceOurBlessedLord cameonearthavaliantwomanisnot ararespecimen,noristhereneedtogo totheuttermostcoastsforher.We findherintheconventsWemeet withonemorehereto-day.ByconsecratingherselftoGodbythereligiousvowsourdearSisterwillproveherselfavaliant,yea,aheroicwoman.
