Owingtothepresentwar-timeconditions,attheexpresswishofHisExcellencytheApostolicDelegate,there werenobigfunctionsinSydneyfor therecentSilverAnniversaryofhis PriesthoodHowever,toshowhis gratitudeforthesingulartributeof affectionandhonourthattheArchbishopsandBishopshadpaidhimby foregatheringfromallpartsofAustralia,andtogivetothePriestsandReligiousaduemarkofrecognitionon thehappyoccasion,HisExcellencyentertainedeightygueststodinnerat theApostolicDelegationonTuesday, April25.He'desiredthatitshould beafamilygatheringandameetingof friends,andsoitwas.

HisExcellencytheApostolicDelegateannouncedthatArchbishopMannix,BishopMcCarthy,BishopRyan,of Sale,BishopRaible,andAbbotCatalanhadwrittenexpressingtheirsinceregoodwishesandregrettingthat theycouldnotbetherethatday.

ThenHisExcellencysaidafewsimplewords.Hewelcomedoneandall, andsaidthatheshouldlikethemto rememberalwaysthattheDelegation wasthehomeofeveryBishop,every priestandreligious,sinceitwasthe homeoftherepresentativeofthePope, whoisFatherofallofthem.During theeightyearsofhismissioninAustraliahebelievedhebadgivenproof ofthistoallthosewhohaveever comethereforonereasonoranother.

Ingivingthatdinneritwashiswish thatalltheCatholicsofAustraliaand NewZealandshouldberepresentedby theBishops,allthepriestsbythe'worthymembersoftheclergypresent,and bythereligioussuperjoi'softhedifferentOrdersandCongregations.He desiredthatallthosewhocollaborated sozealouslywiththeBishopsinpro-

pagatingtheFaithinAustralia,New Zealand,andtheIslandsofthePacificshouldberepresented.TheSistersalso,whogavesuchinvaluable helptotheBishopsandpriestsby theirloyalandunostentatiouscooperation,weretherethatdayrepresentedbytheSistersofSt.Joseph,a pioneerAustralianSisterhood,known toallfortheirzealandtheirdevotion topriests.WithouttheSistersthe ChurchinAustraliawouldnotbethe strongandgrandChurchthatitis. HisExcellencywishedtoexpressto themhisdeepestgratitude.Toevery SisterinAustraliaandNewZealanda littlecard,souvenirofhisJubilee,had alreadybeensent,and,nodoubt,they wouldappreciatethatmorethananythingelse.

HisGracetheArchbishopofBrisbane,MostRev.Dr.Duhig,spokein reply.Hevoicedtheappreciationof theBishopsoftheprivilegeofhaving beenassociatedwithHisExcellency theApostolicDelegateduringthose memorabledaysofthecommemorationofhisSacerdotalSilverJubilee.

Inthosedaystheyhadbeendrawn closertoMonsignorPanico'sheart,and theirregardhadbeenheightenedfor theRepresentativeoftheSovereign Pontiff.Theyhadseenhiminhis devotionsandinhisthanksgivingto God,andhadbeenedifiedbyhisdeep faith.Theyhadmethimsociallyand badadmiredthosequalitiesthathad fittedhimsowellfortheloftypositionwhichheheldasRepresentative oftheHolyFatherinAustraliaand NewZealand.Hehadalltheprudence,wisdomandgraceofthediplomat,without,atthesametime,losing anyofthatsimplefaithwhichhehad broughtfromhishomeinItaly.The ArchbishopsandBishopshadbeenfur-

HisexcellencytheMostRev.JohnPanics,D.D.,J.U.D. therprivilegedtobeassociatedwith HisExcellencyinconference,discussingveryweightymatters,andthey hadbeenimpressedbythekeenness ofhismind,thesagaciousnessofhis judgment,thewidthofhisknowledge, andthemannerin'whichhehadgainedhisendfortheChurch,withoutsacrificingoneiotaofprinciple.They hadnotedinthatconferenceHisExcellency'sdeepinterestintheMissions, andtheyhadadmiredhisknowledge oftheworkthatwasbeingdone,and theworkthatwastobedoneoutthere inthePacific. Theyhadalsoheardhimtellthe true,butsadand'inspiringstoryofthe lifeoftheHolyFatherduringthose yearsofwar,andofallthathadbeen

doneattheDelegationtoassistHis Holinessinbringingsuccourtoprisonersofwarandtoallvictimsofwarin everycountrywithoutdistinctionof creed.Finally,theyhadadmired morethanallthewonderfulattachmentofHisExcellencytotheHoly Father-theattachmentofasontoa father-andtheyknewthatthatattachmenthadbeenbackedupbyan actofgenerosityunparalleledintheir knowledge.Theirheartshadbeen touchedbyhisfilialemotionwhenreferencehadbeenmadetothemembersofhisfamily,who,incommon withsomanyothersoftheircountrymen,weresufferingfromthedireeffectsofwar.

TheApostolicDelegatehadbeenin thatwayandinotherwaysunfolding himselftotheminthosedays.They hadbeengettingclosertohismind andnearertohisheart,andnoneof themhadeverknownHisExcellency totheextenttowhichtheyknewhim now,andthatknowledgeofhimwas totheirgreatadvantage.Hehad,as itwere,droppedthebarrierofreserve andletthemseewhatmannerofman wasthisApostolicDelegate,thisRepresentativeoftheHolyFatherin ouryoungland,andthemanthathad beenrevealedtothemwasonethat commandedtheiresteemandadmiration.

HisExcellencyhadwelcomedthem theretohishome-thatwasanact ofkindnessthattheycouldnever forget.UndertheroofoftheApostolicDelegationtheyfeltaschildren inthehouseofakindfatherwho,to manifesthisregardforthem,hadnot onlycalleddownonthatbanquetthe blessingofGod,buthadmadeitmore impressivebythepresenceofthebeautifulsamplesofartthatlookedout onthemfromtheirframes,andby thegloriousvarietyofflowers,every petalofwhichwasatonguepraising God.HisExcellencyhadcalledall

TorinformationregardingtheCatholicGirls'Movement,kindlyringBMX, orcallinattheClubRoomsanyweek dayafter10a.m.

thosetoaidhimintendingtothem awelcome,andintellingthemhow muchhedesiredtobeonewiththem intheserviceofGod,andindoing thewilloftheHolyFather.Asthey werearoundhimtheyfeltthathewas afriend.Theyfelttheywerepartakingofthelavishhospitalityofone whoesteemedthemasmuchasthey esteemedhim.Thememoryofthose days,andespeciallyofthatgathering attheDelegation,wouldbegolden, and'wouldremainwiththemtillthe endoftheirdays.Inthewordsof thepoet,"Haecolimmeminissejuvabit."Indaystocomewhenthey wereseparateditwouldbeahappy thingtolookbackonthosecelebrations.Manyofthemwouldwishthat HisExcellencywouldbethereforhis GoldenJubilee,althoughtherewould bemanyvacantchairs.HisExcellencycouldtaketohishearttheassurancethatwhereverhemightbeinthe thefuture,andwherevertheymight be,therewouldbereciprocalgoodwill,reciprocalkindness,andthere wouldbegoodwishesfromtheir hearts.

HisExcellencyhadbeforehim,they hoped,alonglifestill,andtheirgreat wishwasthathewouldbelongspared toaddtohisachievementsandtoaugmenthismerits,andtheyhopedand trustedthathewould,therefore,be blessedwithlengthofyears,with healthandstrengthtodoforGodand forGod'sChurchthethingswhichthey knewhewassocapableofdoing.

Romewaswise,Romeselectedwith greatcarethemenshewastosend outtothevariouscountries,andin selectingtheyoungApostolicDelegate(whichhewas)tosendtoAustralia,theChurchandtheHolySee,actedwisely.Theyshouldliketolet theHolyFatherknowhowmuchthey appreciatedthegreatservicesofthe ApostolicDelegate,howmuchtheyappreciatedthefriendshipandhelpthat theyhadallreceivedfrom'Monsignor Panico,andhowgratefultheywere thattheChurchinAustraliahadhad theblessingofhispresenceandthe helpofhistrainingandacutemind.

Theydidnotknowwhatwasbefore theminthefuture.Thewarwasstill onandthefuturewasuncertain.However,theyallknowthatthegatesof hellwouldnotprevailagainstGod's Church;butChristdidnotwishthem toignorehumanmeans,andsoitwas oftremendousadvantageforthemat thepresenttimetohave,intheperson (iftheApostolicDelegate,soablearepresentativeofthatgreatman,the VicarofChrist,whosecharity,patience,kindnessandwisdomhadastonishedtheworldduringtheseyears.

"Weshallallleavehere,YourExcellency,"concludedArchbishopDuhig, "withveryhappymemories.Itwill bemanyadaybeforethereisacelebrationlikethisheldintheDelegationagain,andsowemaysay,that thisexperiencewillbeabigthingin ourlives.

"Itenderyoutheunitedgoodwishes oftheprelatesandpriestshereassembled.Itwouldhavebeenavery happythingforyoutobenearthe HolyFathertobecelebratingthese Ceremonies,but,Iwouldassureyou that,apartfromthepresenceofthe HolyFatherandthecharmingcircle ofyourownfamily,youcouldnotbe withkinderandmoregeneroushearts thanthemenhereonthisoccasion. Wewishyoualonglifeandtheeternal crownofgloryattheend."

HisGraceArchbishopGilroyspoke insupportofArchbishopDuhig,saying thattherewasoneaspectofthelife oftheApostolicDelegatethathadnot beenputinevidencethosedays-it hadbeenalifeofgreatsacrifice.Every priestafterhisordinationwasnaturallyanxioustoexercisetheministryfor whichhehadbeenordained.MonsignorPanico,immediatelyafterhisstudies,wassenttoaforeigncountryto betrainedinthearduousandaridlife oftheecclesiasticaldiplomaticcareer, andhehadhadlittleifanyopportunityduringtheyearsthathadfollowed ofmixingamongthepeopleandconsolingthemintheirsorrow's,ofpreachingtheGospel,andadministeringtl Sacraments.Nevertheless,although HisExcellencyhadbeenworking thosetwenty-fiveyearsofpriesthood inthisspecialserviceoftheHolySee, andalthoughhehadnotalwaysseen thefruitofhis'work,hiscontribution tothegoodoftheChurchinthevariouscountriesinwhichhehadcarried outhismissionhadcertainlybeenvery great,andhewouldmostsurelyreceiveanespecialrewardfromGod.

appointmenttoAustraliahadbeena lifeoflonghoursatthedeskinthe rathermundaneenvironmentofdiplomaticdealingswithembassiesandMinistersofState.AsCharge'd'Affaires especiallyhehadbeencaughtupinto aworldwhereallthesubtletyofdiplomacywasattimesemployedtoinfringeontherightsoftheChurch,and hehadhadtomeetSuchveiledencroachmentswithsimilarde'marches always,ofcourse,inspired,directed andtemperedbythatcharity,sincerityandloyaltythathadbeenthe characteristicsofPapaldiplomacyand thesecretofitssuccess.Onthe otherhand,inAustralia,HisExcellencystressed,hehadbyhisvisitsto alldioceses,comeintodirectcontact withthewonderfulzealoftheBishops, priestsandreligious,andhadnoted theirmarvellousunioninthegreat causetheywereadvancing.Hehad hadtheopportunityofadmiringthe sacrificesoftheparishpriestsandcuratesgivingnoble,cheerfulservicein the"backblocks,"andoftheNuns andBrothersinschools,hospitals,and otherinstitutes,teaching,nursingand tendingthepoorandaged.Hehad witnessedthelimitlessgenerosityand intrepidfaithoftheCatholiclaypeopleandhadbeenconsoledandcomfortedaboveallbytheirloyaltyanddevotiontotheHolyFather.Forall theseexperiencesHisExcellencygave thankstoGodandrecognisedthemas sourcesofinspirationandedification thathadbenefitedhimandhisspirituallifemostdeeply.Duringthelast few'daysthewish,"adaltiora,"had beenfrequentlyexpressedinpublic. HisExcellencywishedtosaythathe hadnoambitionsandthat,ifhecould choose,hewouldremainalwayswith theAustralians.ReferringtoArchbishopDuhig'saddress,HisExcellency agreedthatnoonecouldreplacethe HolyFatheratthosecelebrations,but heassuredthemthatthey,withall theirmanifestationsofaffectionand kindness,hadmadeupfortheabsence ofhisfriendsinRomeandeventoa bigextentforthemembersofhisown dearfamily

ThejuvenilebranchoftheHoly NameSocietyhasbeensuccessfullyreorganised.Twoguildshavegraduated intotheseniorbranch,andtwonew juniorguildshavebeenformedwitha totalofalmost30boys.LesliePierce hasbeenelectedpresident,Basil Wornersecretary,andWilliamHegney treasurer.Thegoodbeginningma-de bythesenewguildsshowsgreatpromiseforthefuture.Theiraimisto goonincreasingwith100percent.attendance,bothmorningandevening. Soontheywillbethemostexemplary sectionoftheHolyNameSociety.

ThisweektheL.C.Y.reportsavery suocessfuldanceheldinSt.Joseph's HallonSaturdaynight.Anexcellent crowdattended,andthereiseveryreasontothinkthatitwillbebetteron futureSaturdaynightswhenthese weeklyfixturesbecomebetterknown. TheladswerepleasedtonoticeC.G.M. badgesdisplayedbyquiteanumberof thedancers.

Oversixtyyoungpeopleattendedthe lessonsinmoderndancinggivenlast week.Intheseearlystagesenthusiasmoftentakestheplaceofelegance andskill,andachingtoesareonlypart ofthepricepaidbythelearners.These classesareheldeachWednesdayeveninginSt.Joseph'sHall.

Playingonabadoval,theL.C.Y. footballteamwassoundlybeatenbya teamfromtheMidlandJunctionPoliceBoysonSaturdaylast.Well,well, thatonlymeanshardertrainingand closerattentiontothedirectionsof thecoach.Iftheteamdidnotwin,at leastittriedhardandplayedwell. Perhapsthatisevenbetterthantoo muchsuccess.Anywaybetterluckon May20,whentheteamplaysVictoria ParkatWellingtonSquare,andon May27,whenitplaysEastPerthon thePerthOval.

Ilwobasket-ballteamshavebeen enteredinthecompetitionsconducted bytheMetropolitanBoys'Clubs' SportsAfsociation.

OnMondaylastoccurredthedeath ofMr.Jermy,ofJoseph-street,father oftheclub'srecentsecretary,Harry Jermy,andofGreg.Jermy,fellow memberoftheclub.Atthemeeting thesympathyofthememberswasexpressedandfollowingtheusualcustom,oneminute'ssilencewasobservedandprayerswererecited.TheL.C.Y. expressesdeepsympathyforMrs. Jermyandfamily.R.I.P. withpinkgladiolibytheSistersof Mercy.

Aftersigningtheregister,agood-luck horseshoewasplacedonthebride's armbyheraunty,Mrs.Hayes,who wasresponsibleformakingofallthe beautifulfrocksfortheoccasion.

Whenthehappycoupleleftthe church,themembersoftheVictoria ParkRedCrossE.S.C.,ofwhichthe bridewasamemberforoverfour years,formedaguardofhonour.

ThereceptionwasheldintheR.S.L. Hall,VictoriaPark,wheretheguests werereceivedbythebride'smother, frockedinanavycrepegownwith matchingshoulderspray.Shewasassistedbythemotherofthegroom, alsoattiredinnavyandwithshoulder spraytomatch.

Thethree-tierweddingcake(made bythebride'smother,andicedbyher father)wascut,andmanycongratulatorytelegramswereread,including onefromtheLordMayorandLady Mayoress(Dr.andMrs.T.W. Meagher).Manybeautifulpresents andanumberofchequeswerereceived.

Afteranextremelyenjoyableevening,theyoungcoupleleftfortheir honeymoon,thebridechoosingasher travellingoutfitabluecostumewith blackaccessories. 4100.!

Ifwerecallourrecenthistoryrightly,therewasacertainProfessorof NewTestamentTheologyatSt.Andrew'sCollege,Sydney-Dr.Samuel Angus,whowaspersecutedregarding hisreligiousopinionsin1936.Dr. AnguswasbiddenbytheGeneralAssemblyofthePresbyterianChurchof Australiatoobservethechurch's teachingabouttheResurrection.In 1939theissueofDr.Angus'sdisobedieicewaswidelypublicised,butfinishedinconclusivelyowingtotheunwillngneSsoftheGeneralAssemblyto exerciseanauthoritywhichmightbe widelychallenged.ButDr.Angus wasagainbiddentoobey,andthat fromabodywhichissupposedto

Amosttmusaltypeofnewsitemwasbroughtintoprominenceafew weeksago,whentheNaplescorrespondentof"TheTimes"announcedthat theliquefactionofthebloodofSaintJanuarius,whichiswitnessedannually onthefirstSaturdayinMay,failedtooccuronthatdate.

TheArchbishopofNaples.iThrdinalAscalese,afterthebloodhadfailed toliquefyattheceremony,said:"Thisisthefirsttimesince1884_thatthe bloodhasfailedtoliquefy.Thenacholeraepidemicfollowed.Evenif thebloodliquifiesinthenextfewdays,itwillbeabadomenforNaples. Wecanexpectavisitationofdisasterandcatastrophe.Itisapunishment forthecorruptionofNeapolitans."

Theliquefactiondidnotoccuruntil2.30p.m.onSunday,7th.inst,the processtaking22hours.Thecongregation,includingmanyBritishandAmericanofficers,werevisiblymovedwhenapriestboretheliquifiedblood amongthem.

AllthefameofSt.Januariusrests uponthat"standingmiracle"(asBaroniuscalledit),theliquefactionofthe allegedrelicofhisbloodwhichispreservedinthechapeloftheTreasury ofthecathedral-churchofNaples,a happeningofwhichtherearerecords forthepastfourhundredyears.The relicconsistsofadarksolid,opaque masswhichhalffillsthesmallglass phialinwhichitiscontained,the phialitselfbeingfixedinametalreliquary.Eighteentimesayear,inconnectionwiththefeastofthetransfiationoftherelicttoNaples(Saturday beforethefirstSunday'inMay),the feastofthesaint(September19),and theanniversaryoftheavertingofa threatenederuptionofVesuviusin 1631(December16),thisrelicis broughtoutandheldbyapriestin thepresenceofwhatisbelievedtobe themartyr'shead,exposedinasilver reliquaryonthealtar.Prayersare saidbythepeople,especiallyasrepresentedbyanumberofpoorwomen whohave,aprivilegedpositioninthe Church,andareknownas"theAunts ,,fSt.JanuariusziedeSanGennaro).Afteravaryinginterval,from twominutestoanhourasarule,the priestfromtimetotimeturningthe reliquaryupsidedown,thedarkmacs hithertosolidandimmovable,detaches itselffromthesidesoftheglass,becomesliquidandreddishincolour, andsometimesfroths,bubblesup,and increasesinvolume.Thistakesplace notonlyinfullviewofthepeople, butincloseproximitytoanyaccreditedpersonswhomayhavebeenadmittedtothesanctuary.Thepriest thenannounces,''Themiraclehashappened,"TeDeumissung,andthe relicveneratedbythecongregation andclergy.Few,ifany,allegedmiracleshavebeenexaminedmorecarefully,moreoften,orbypeopleofmore divergentviewsthanthisoftheblood ofSt.Januarius,anditmaybesafely affirmedthatnoexpertinquirer,howeverrationalistintemperhemaybe, nowdeniesthatwhatissaidtotake placedoestakeplace.Thereisno trick,andthereisasyetnocompletelysatisfactoryexplanation(though manyhavebeenadvanced,bothby Catholicsandothers),excepttheexplanationofmiracle.Butbeforea Doyouwishtohelpeducateapriest forworkinWesternAustralia?Make aregularannualcontributiontohelp anIndigentstudent.

Thesplendourofalifeontheland (hailedbychurchmen,philosophers, andpoetsastheideallife,andlooked uponbythecommonmanasthe sourceofeconomicsecurity)is'sadly dimmedbymanydisaliiilitiesinAustralia.

Thecrushingburdenpfdebt,highinterest,andhighcosts(formachinery, clearing,andservices)donotallowthe farmeradecentreturnforhislabour andmoney.Theprofitsmadeoutof farmingarenotmadebythefarmer. Sociallythefarmerisalonelyfigure. Hehaslittleornosocialandcultural life,andfewifanyofthesocialservicesreachtohimandhisfamily.

miraclemaybecertainlyrecognisedall naturalexplanationsmusthavebeen examinedandfoundwanting,andall objectionsanswered.Amongtheundoubtedfactsconcerningthisrelicare thefollowing:

1.Thedarksubstanceallegedtobe thebloodofSt.Januarius(whichfor morethan300yearshasremainedsealedupinaglassphialimmovablyset inametalreliquary)doesnotalways occupythesamevolume.Sometimes theblackandhardmassisseenalmost completelytofillthephial,atother tiesthereisavacantspaceaboveit ofmorethanathirdofitsbulk.

2.Concurrentlywiththisvariationin volumethereisavariationinweight, whichoflateyearshasbeentestedin anaccuratedchemicalbalance.Takingtheextremeswhichhavebeenrecorded,thisvariationhasamountedto asmuchas27grammes.

3.Therapidityoftheliquefaction seemstobearnoratiotothetemperatureoftheatmosphere.Sometimes whenthetemperaturehasstoodas highas86Fahrenheit,morethantwo hourshavepassedbeforeanysingsof liquefactionwereobserved.Onthe otherhand,whenthetemperaturehas been15oreven20lowerthanthis, completeliquefactionhasoccurredin from10to15minutes.

4.Theliquefactiondoesnotalways takeplaceinthesameway.Instance'sarerecordedinwhichtheliquefied contentsseemalmosttoboilandare ofavividcrimsoncolour,whilein othercasesthecolourisdullandthe movementsluggish.

Ontheotherhand,amongthedifficultiesinthewayofacceptingthephenomenonasamiraclethefollowing havebeenpointedout:Thefactthata verylargemajorityofallotherbloodrelicsofwhichsimilarbehavior--*ems tobetruearefoundintheneighborhoodofNaples;andsomeoftherelics, eg.,thoseofSt.JohnBaptist,St.Stephen,St.Ursula,arealmostcertainly spurious.Therelichasseventimes beenknowntoliquefywhileajeweller wasrepairingthereliquary,butoften duringtheDecemberexpositionithas failedtoliquefyatall.Theauthenticityoftherelicitselfisextremelyproblematical;wehavenorecordofthe cultusofSt.Januariusbeforethefifth century.Moreoverthereistheconsideration,ofyetgreaterweight,ifthe relicbenotauthentic,oftheseeming purposelessnessofthemarvel.Sucha criticismmaybelevelledatmanyother allegedmiracles;wecannotsearchthe waysofGod;anditistruethatfor centuriestheliquefactionhasbeena standingmanifestationofHisomnipotenceforthousandsofNeapolitans.But itmustalsoberememberedthatmarvelsofthiskind,sofarfrombeinga help,areadefinitehindrancetothe faithofotherpeople,ofdifferenttemperamentbutofnolessgoodwill:and thesealsohavesoulstobesaved-

Asaclassfarmersarethemostdisorganisedbodyinmodernsociety. Theyknowthatthisisduepartlyto theirownindividualismanddistrust ofoneanother.Buttheyhavereasontocomplainthattheycannotdependontheirownelectedrepresentativestorepresenttheirinterests,and thatstrongforcesarearrayedagainst them.

Thefarmersasawholearealonely, heavily-burdened,exploitedpeople.And inthefaceoffarmers'hopesanddesiresforanimprovementintheirlot,in spiteofallthetalkofreconstruction andrehalibitationbygovernment,we believethatonlyfromthefarmers willthesolutionoftheirproblems come.

Firstly,achangedoutlook,toconsiderfarmingasawayoflife,nota commercialenterprite.Secondly,cooperationineveryshapeandform,and ineverybranchoftheindustry.These economicandsocialideals,however, meanagreatchangeinoutlook,be-

causetheydependuponspiritual valuesandhaveareligiousbasis.

TheCatholicRuralMovementisalways,andinallrespects,subjectto thecontroloftheBishop.IthasofficialexistenceasaCatholicAction bodynowthatithasreceivedhisapprovalandhismandatetoundertakea partofhisapostolicmissiononhisbehalf.

TheCatholicRuralMovementisa laymovement,anditscontrol-subject totheBishop-isentirelyinthehands ofthefarmersthemselves.This throwsthemajorresponsibilityforsuccessorfailureonthemselves.
