WhyHaveAustralianOrgansof NewsandPropagandaBeenSilent

Thereareoneortwoquestionsthat seemtobesimmeringinthemindsof someofmylisteners,andwhichI wouldliketoclearuponceandforall beforecontinuingwiththeusualqueriesfromcorrespondents.
Thefirstquestionisthis,andmany haveaskeditintheirlettersaddressed tothesession:WhyisitthatthePope onlydenouncedaerialwarfarewhen bombsbegantofallonVaticanCity?
A.:TheHolyFatherhasconsistently denouncedaerialatrocitiesfromthebeginning.However,ouralmightyorgansofpropaganda-thepressandthe radio-chosetomaintainamysterious silenceovertheserepeatedprotestsof theHolyFatheruntilRomeitselfbecamethreatenedwithdestruction,and thenhiswordsweresuddenlyplastered acrossfrontpageswithbannerheadlines.Thegulliblepublic,ofcourse, acceptedtheobviousimplicationthat thiswasthefirstprotestthePopehad made,thathehadbrokenaguiltysilenceonlytosqUealwhenhisownskin wasendangered.Notmerelyahandul dozensoflettershavebeen sentintomevoicingthewriters'indignationinmuchmoresarcasticand offensivelanguagethanthat.ThebitterprejudiceagainsttheHolyFather andthereadinesstoimputealways ebasestmotivestohisactionsand ntterancetishardtounderstand.There seemstoheaconspiracytodragthe CatholicChurchandtheHolyFather intodisrepute:tosuggestthatboth

Theseandothercharges,allcompletelyatvariancewiththefactsand utterlyuntrue,havebeengoingthe roundsinbuses,inclubs,inmagazines, andinthedailypress-eitherbybald assertionorbyinsinuation.Itis hightimesomeonenailedtheseliesand gavethepublicthetruth.

Lengthyextractsoftheaddresswere publishedinthenewspapersinGreat Britain,andintheUnitedStateswere givenfront-pageprominenceinmostof thedailies.Makingapleaforthe "sufferingofthecivilianpopulaton,for defencelesswomenandchildren,forthe sickandtheold,whoareoftenexposedtomorehorribledangersthanarmedsoldiersatthefront,"HisHoliness saidthat"thedreadfulconflicthas,at times,assumedcertainformsoffightingwhichmustbedescribedasatrocious.Already,atthepresentmoment wehavetodeplorethefactthatthe limitspermittedbyalegitimatewar havebeentransgressedrepeatedly.In viewofthis,wemustaskwhetheran increasingcrueltyofoffensiveweaponswouldnotsoontransformthewar intoanunimaginablehorror."That wasoneofseveralproteststheHoly FathermadeaftertheblitzingofLondon.
Again,inhisChristmasbroadcast, 1941,PopePiusreferredtothemannerinwhich"mankindwaslacerating itselfinawarofdestruction,"andexpressedhisconcernatthe'physicaland mentaltorturewroughtbythedeath anddestructionwhichaerialwarfare hadbroughttothicklypopulatedtowns andindustrialareas."Hevoicedhis distressat"thesuffocationoftheidea ofjusticebytheideaofpower,atthe easewithwhich,individuallyandcollectively,thepropertyandthelifeof otherswerebeingviolated."
IncomplementinghispreviousPeace Pointsof1940,HisHolinessaddedan outrightcondemnationoftotalwar.
InabroadcastonMay13,1942,the Popeagainreferredto"thearbitrary actsofviolenceandcrueltyagainstwhichonformeroccasionsWe raisedourvoiceinwarning:andWe repeatthatwarningnowwithinsistent supplication-eveninthefaceofthreats ofstillmoredeadlywarfare;thewar ofitself,throughtheperfecttechnical qualityofitsweapons,causesunheard ofpain,miseryandsufferingtothe nations."Hespokeofcasesinwhich "isepitomisedandcondensedthemost lamentable,bitter,excruciatingphenomenoneverturnedlooseonhumanity." WhatmoredoyouwantincondemnationofthefiendishblitzingofEurope's capitals?Whatmoreoutspokenand trenchantcondemnationofAxistacticscouldthePopehaveuttered?
Timeandtimeagainhehasspokenin similartermsinoccasionaladdresses broadcasttotheworldoverVatican radio.Broadcastingaslongagoas 1942,hereferredtoaerialwarfare, "whosehorrors,'hesaid,'Wehave fromthebeginningfrequentlydenounced."So,longbeforeRomewasbombedoreventhreatened,theHolyFather haddenouncedthedevastationofaerial warfareandtheindiscriminatebombingtacticsinitiatedbytheLuftwaffe. Isn'titpassingstrangethattheHoly Father'scondemnationsshouldhave receivedsuchpublicityintheBritish andAmericanpressandyethavesufferedfromsuchaconspiracyofsilenceonthepartofourownallegedly unbiassedorgansofnewsandpropaganda?
Andwithreferencetotheappealto thebelligerentPowersbytheCatholic ArchbishopsandBishopsofAustralia,
thatRomeshouldbespareddestruction,Idon'tthinkthepublicgenerally areawarethatLordCasinoLang,the formerArchbishopofCanterbury,and otherAnglicanleadersinEngland werejoinedbytheAustralianBishops ofNewcastle(Dr.deWittPatty),and asBallarat(Dr.W.H.Johnson)indeploringtheperiltoRomeandsupportingtheirappeal."Allofus,"saidBishopJohnson,'savethoseblindedby bigotry,musthavebeenmovedbythe statement."ThegoodBishop,however,laboursunderthedeilusionof manyofhisfellowAustralianswhenhe saysthat"Italy,withtheapprovalof thePope,invadedAbyssinia."

Thecampaignofmisrepresentation wasverysuccessful,sothatevenresponsibleandsympatheticwritershave beentakenin.Thefundamentalfact ithematteristhatthePope'shands weretiedagainstformalapprovalor evendisapproval.UndertheLateran Treaty,thePopecannotinterferein affairsofItalianforeignpolicy.He canandcouldonlyuseindirectstatementandaction.Buthisposition wasquiteclear,despitetheeffortsto distorthisswords,bothinItalyand abroad.BeforetheEthiopianaffair, heappealedforpeace,andsaidthatif hiscounselswerenottaken,heprayed "Scatterthenationswhodelightin wars."Hismeaningwascrypticbut clear,forthePope'stextfromPsalm lxvii,verses31-32,mentionsEthiopia. Nowthereisyetanotherquestion whichhaspromptedmanyoftheletterstothissession,andthatis:How uoIexplaintheVaticancomplicity wthFascisminSpain?
A.:Thatchargewasalsomadeby theSovietpaper,"Isvestia."Well,these fewfactsmighthelpclarifytheposition:

Finally,withregardto"Isvestia's" othercharges,youmightrecallthat Itreatedofthematsomelengthina previoussession.Sincethenthe ForeignPolicyAssociationoftheUnitedStatespublishedareportinWashingtonentitled"TheForeignPolicy oftheVatican,"andinreplyto"Isvestia"thereportcompletelyabsolves boththeChurchandthelasttwo PopesfromthechargeofbeingFascistminded.Onthiscountthereport hasnodifficultyinshowingthatthere isaninherentcontradictionbetween Catholicismandthetotalitarianphilosophy.RepeatedPapalstatements haveneverlefttheworldindoubtasto wheretheChurchmuststandinitsattitudetowardsthetotalitarianteachings.Itiscertainlyrefreshingtofind animpartialresearchbureausocompletelyexoneratingtheChurchand thePopesofthesemaliciousslanders.
ThereportalsodetailsthemanyoccasionswhenthePopehasmadeit,clear thathissympathiesliewiththe UnitedNations,anditconcludesthat thePopealsorealisesthattheinterests oftheChurchlietherealso-withsome naturalfearsthatCommunistRussia willbringgreatproblems.
Twooftheconclusionsofthereport areworthnoting:"(1)Theviowthat thePopeisatheartaFascistand wishestoseethetriumphofmodern dictatorships,whilealongsequenceof superficialevidencecanbeconstructed tosupportit,provestobewithoutany foundationinfact.(2)Atthesame time,heisnotasupporterofdemocracy,butisjustwhatheclaimstobe -indifferenttopoliticalforms,accept. inganygovernmentwhichwillmeet theminimumdemandsoftheChurch."
Nowtheseremarksofmine'to-night havebeenatruestatementoffacts; theycanallbeverified.Sure,theycleartheHolyFatherandtheChurch ofmanyalyingchargeandmalicious insinuation,butthosechargeswould neverbemadeif,peoplewereonly given(first,thetruth,and,secondly, thewholetruth,byournewsservices andorgansofpropaganda.People, goodpeople,condemnthePope,condemntheChurch,condemnallCatholicsoutofhand,simplybecausethey donotknowthetruth;theyhave beenfedforsolongonhalf-truthsand unblushingliesthatonecanunderStandtheirattitudeeventhoughhe deploresit.Iwouldonlyliketosay inconclusionthattheCatholicChurch asksnotforfavouredtreatment,but onlyforfairtreatment.That'sall!

A.:ThecrownofwhichPaulspeaks istherewardofhislifeofdevotionto Christ,andhemanifestlymeansthat heistoreceiveit"onthatday"to Whichhehasjustreferredintheletter, thatis,thedayofhisdissolution,his death.SoPauldidreceive,orconfidentlyexpectedtoreceive,hisover whelmingrewardonthedayhedied, andhisrewardwastheBeatificVision.
Q.:Youteachthatthesoulisaspirit andimmortal,buttheScriptures clearlysay,"fearhimwhoisableto destroythebodyandsoul."Even theDevilisnotimmortal,forasstatedinHebrewsII,14,Christisgoing todestroyhim.
A.:Firstofall,withregardtothe soul,voumustdistinguishbetween absolutedestruction,whichwouldbe annihilationofthesoul,andrelative destructionwhichwouldbethefrustrationandexclusionfromthemysterious sharinginGod'sownlifewhichis knownasthe"BeatificVision"orHeaven.
Secondly,withregardtothereference intheletterstotheHebrews-thisalso doesnotmeanthatChristwilldestroy Sataninthesenseofhisabsoluteannihilation.ItmeansthatSatan's powerwillbedestroyed.Other,clearertextsmakethiscertain,as,forexample,Christ'sjudgmentonthosewho aretobedamned,inMatt.XXV,41:
"Departfromme,youcursed,into everlastingfire,whichwasprepared forthedevilandhisangels."
Onecouldfurtheraddalltheproofs fromreasonfortheimmortalityofthe spiritualsubstance.
