Referringtopresentmiseries,Pope Pius'saidinthecourseoftheyearthe horrorsofwarhadcomeevercloser, eventotheEternalCity,andthat hardsufferinghadbeenthelotof manyofthefaithfulinhisdiocese. ThePopethenurgedhisspiritual childrennottobedisheartenedbythe presentsadstateofaffairs.

Explosiveandincendiarybombs droppedontheoutskirtsofRomeon December28causedanumberof deathsandcasualtiesanddamagedextra-territorialpropertyoftheHolySee. Damagewasdoneinthesoneofthe catacombsofSt,Calixtus,St.PraetextatusandSt.DomitillaThiswasthe fourthbombingofRome.Alliedplanes maderaidsonJune19andAugust1.8. Asingleplane,whichGeneralEisenhowerofficiallydeniedwasAllied, droppedfourbombsonVaticanCity onNovember6.

IntheDecember28raidonRome, bombsdamagedthebuildinghousing thedirectorateofthecatacombs,shatteredsarcophagiwindowsandaskylight,anddamagedtheexteriorofthe ancientBasilicabythecatacombof St.Domitilla.Greaterdamagewas doneinnearbyareas,particularlyin theGarbatellaquarter,andmanywere killedorwounded.Thechapelofthe FranciscanMissionarySistersofEgypt wasamongthebuildingsstruck,Eyewitnessessaidthatincendiarybombs weredroppedbythelastplaneina largeformation.

TheresidentialquarteratGarbatello, neartheBasilicaofSanPaolo,was saidtohavebeenhit.Accordingto Naziclaims,severalhousesweredestroyedinthearea,andnumerouspersonswerekilledorinjured.Thecharge wasalsomadebytheAxisthatfifty personswereinjuredbymachine-gun fire.(ReportsoftheGermanDNB thattheBasilicaofSt.PaulOutside theWalls,situatedontheOstianWay andcontainingthemajorpartofthe bodyoftheApostle,wasseriously damagedareindicatedasuntruein dispatchesreceivedbytheN.C.W.C. fromVaticanCity.

ThecatacombsofSt.Calixtusand St.PraetextatusareontheAppian Way:thatofSt.Domitillaisonthe ViaArdeatina.Theseroadsleadsouth fromRome.Thecatacombswerereopenedinthelatterhalfofthenineteenthcentury.ThewallsofSt.CalixtusarelinedwithtombsofthirdcenturyPopes,manyofthemmartyrs (bodieslaterremovedtoSt.Peter's).

AfterthefirstbombingofRome PiusXIIhurriedoutfromVatican Citytocomforttheafflicted.The BasilicaofSanLorenzo,nearmilitary objectives,washeavilydamagedand therewereanumberofcasualties.The HolyFathervisitedtheareastricken inthesecondraidandreceivedalarge bloodstainonhiswhitecassock.

TheChurchofSantaMariadell'Orto wasvirtuallydestroyedandtheChurch ofSant'Elenaseverelydamaged.A directhitoccurredontheconvent schooloftheSistersofNotreDamede Namur,butthenuns,includingfour Americans,escapedinjury.TheRev. ModernLiberalismteachesthatman isfreetoliveashelikesandtoteach whathewill.Sotheonlyrealitythat existsformanandofwhichheought

Fromno pointofviewcanerrorclaimthis right,Whenitgetsafootingina mindoramongthemultitudeitusurps rightsnotbelongingtoit,itisunjust. Thefollowersofwhatiscalledliberalismdenytheexistenceofanydivine authoritytowhichobedienceisdue, andproclaimthateverymanisthe lawtohintself.Wehaveseenhow itisagrossinjusticetowardsGodand itisalsounjusttowardsman.The directresultofliberalismisanarchy ortyranny.Thatanarchyshould syringfromliberalism,asaconsequenceflowsfromitsproperprinciple, isplainenough,Accordingtomodernconstitutionseveryonehasthe righttothinkashepleasesandtolive ashethinks.Butifhisthoughtis theguideofconductforeachone,

withouttherestraintsofobjective truth,itisobviousthatwearetending toacompletelicentiousnessofmind andofaction.Moreovertheinevitableoutcomeofliberalismistyranny. Athletics.

Theinter-clubathleticcompetitions heldatLeedervilleOvaleachweek havereachedahappyconclusionfor theseason.Throughoutthesemeetingstherehasbenkeencompetition betweentheSubiacoPoliceBoys' ClubandtheSubiacoCatholicBoys, andthefinalscoresweres:Subiaco PoliceBoys,first,with64points,and SubiacoCatholicBoys,second,with 56.5points,leavingamarginof7.5 pointsbetweenus. AllHallows'Parishsufferedasevere losswhenMr.PeterMcMahon,Station MasteratBoulder,passedawaysuddenlyonSaturday,March11.He willbemissedalsobythosewith whomhecameincontactasarailway official,forhewasregardedasasplendidcitizenandamostefficientand courteousofficer.

LastSunday,beingHolyNameSunday,Masswasofferedfortherepose ofthesoulofthedeceased,whowas amostenergeticsecretaryoftheAll Hallows'BranchoftheSociety.Rev. FatherCarmody,ismakingfeelingreferencetothedeceased,statedthathe alwaysfeltpersonallyindebtedto Peterforthevaluableassistancehe receivedinallparishactivities,assistancethatwasalwaysgenerouslygiven, inamosthumbleandunobstrusive way.Peter,hesaid,wasamostexemplaryCatholic,andhislifeand workwaSashininglighttothose aroundhim.

OnFriday,February27,alarge gathering'ofparishionersassembledat St.Brigid'sSchool,MidlandJunction, tobidfarewelltotheirveryspecial friendandparishpriest,Rev.Father McCormack.

Afteraveryenjoyablesocialwith itemspresentedbytheschoolchildren andtalentedlocalresidents,theopportunitywastakentoexpresstoFather 'McCormacktheheartfeltthanksand appreciationofallmembersoftheparishfortheveryvaluableworkcarried outbyhim,inthefourteenyearsof hisresidenceinMidlandJunction.

Mr.OwenHanlon,onbehalfofthe parishioners,spokeinglowingtermsof themannerinwhichFatherhadministeredtothespiritualandmaterial welfareofthecommunity.Themany societiesandsodalitiesoftheChurch owedhimadeepdebtofgratitudefor hisinterestandcare,anditwaswith verysincereregretthattheyviewed hisdeparture.Hewishedhimevery successandhappinessinhisnew sphere,whereheknewhewouldalways rememberhisoldfriends.

Whatamesswehavemadeof things.SurelyitisGod'sturnnow. Naturalism,Capitalism,Utilitarianism, Communism.Secularism,Liberalism havefailed.ItishightimeGodlessnesswasdeclaredbankruptandthe CatholicChurchallowedtofacethe problem.

Letusproclaimboldlythattheonly hopeofatrueandlastingpeaceis throughacceptanceoftheKingshipof JesusChrist.AcceptanceofChristimpliesacceptanceofHisteachingand sodemandsconversionoftheworld totheCatholicFaith.Itdemands aChristianStatesafeguardingtheinterestsofChristinregardtoEducation,thePress,Cinema,Stage,Radio, inaworda'Christiannationwitha completereadinesstoadheretoallimplicationsofChrist'steaching.That remedyisanunpopularone,butit istheonlyremedy.Christ'syoke, sweetandlight,savingmankindfrom wanderingtoitsdeathatthehands ofitsownriotouspassions,orelse thegalling,crushingchainofsin'shard bondage.God'sremedycallsnot onlyforthereformoftheindividual, butalsoofthewholesocialorder;the restorationoftheTenCommandments tothedailylifeofthenation.Thou shaltnotkillahumanbeing,evenone twoday's'old:nosinfulmurderofthe unbornchild;nodishonesty:Thou shaltnotsteal;nosweatedlabour:an honestday'sworkforanhonestday's pay.Goodlivingconditions.Reverenceforfellow-men.Vicemustgo: Thosewhobattenonpanderingtolust, thepedlarsofcontraceptives.Legalisedadultery-theDivorceCourtsmustgo.Christ'swordsareexplicit, clear,emphatic."WhomGodhath joinedletnomanputasunder."The

Therecanbenotwowaysaboutit. Nochanceofcompromise.Thesin-

Humanlyspeakingitlooksasifour goalisunattainable;thatitisanidle dreamtotrytoconvincementhatthe CatholicChurchistheonlysaviourof society;butwemustrememberthat whatisimpossiblewithmenispoll,iblewithGod,inwhosehandsarethe heartsofmen.Thedarkesthouris oftenthehourbeforethedawn.Things arenotashardastheyseem.The veryfrightfulnessofthiswarismakingpeoplethinkandexaminetheir consciencesasneverbefore,Inthe hopefulWordsofourHolyFatherthe Pope:"Alreadythereareflickering beam'sinthepagandarknesscovering theworld.'Itisforustomakethose beamsstrong,steadybeaconslighting andguidingsin-wearied,disillusioned mankindtothelife-givingraysofthe LightoftheWorld.MayMary,the MorningStar,HelpofChristians,aid herchildrenbyherbrightshiningand leadthemtotheSunofJtisticeand makethemrealisethatitisonlyby walkinginthewayofChristthe Kingthattheycandwellinpeacefor ever.Amen.
