ThattheHolySeeisawareofthe identityofthoseresponsibleforthe bombingattackuponVaticanCityto wardstheendoflastyear,wasplainlyindicatedbyPopePiusXIIinhis addresstotheCollegeofCardinalson ChristmasEve.Theattemptat anonymitybythepilot,saidPope Pius,wasunsuccessfuL

TheSovereign,Pontiffwasrespondingtogreetingsaddressedtohimin thenameoftheSacredCollegebyits Dean,the92-year-oldCardinalGennaroGranitoPignatellidiBelmonte.

"Suchanattack,"saidHisHoliness, "deliberatelyplannedanddishonourablyandunsuccessfullyscreenedbehind theanonymityofthepilot,onterritory sacredtoChristians,sanctifiedbythe bloodofthefirstPeter,centreofthe world,moreover,foritsmasterpiecesof cultureandart,andguaranteedby solemntreaty,isasymptomhardto explainawayofthedepthofspiritual disorientationandmoraldecadenceof consciencetowhichsomeerringminds havesunk."

Referringtopresentmiseries,Pope Pius'saidinthecourseoftheyearthe horrorsofwarhadcomeevercloser, eventotheEternalCity,andthat hardsufferinghadbeenthelotof manyofthefaithfulinhisdiocese. Manyofthepoorhadhadtheir housesdestroyedbyaerialbombardment,andavenerablesanctuaryhad receivedinjuriesdifficulttorepair. EcoaomicDisorder.

TheHolyFathersaiditwaswell knownhowmuchthesorrowandmiserypressingdownonpeoplesineverincreasingwantweigheddownand afflictedhisheart,andforthatreason hisChristmasMessagecontaineda passagedrawingattentiontotheextremewanttormentingsomanynations,andappealingtothesympatheticbountyofallthosestillableto giveefficacioussupporttothegreat workofChristiancharityandhuman brotherhood.ThePopereferredto theappeals,giganticinnumber,and increasinghourly,whichwerereachingHisHolinessandtothepainful inadequacyof"Ourmeans,whichthe economicbarriersofwarfarerender morescantybythehour."Hepointedoutthedifficultiesandobstaclesto theexerciseofhisApostolicMinistry, whichwereincreasingdailyandimpedingthenormalexerciseofthisministryatatimewhentheneedofcomfort,brotherlyloveandjusticewas feltmorekeenlythanever,forunited effortsforreliefandaidofthesuffering. ThePopethenurgedhisspiritual childrennottobedisheartenedbythe presentsadstateofaffairs.

"ffitheallowedustopenetratethe visionofGod'sdesignonwhichthe pastgiveslight,"HisHolinesssaid, "thehardandcruelconditionsofthe presenthourarenothingelsethana preludetothedawnofanewdevelopmentinwhichtheChurch,withher missiontoallpeoplesandforall

Explosiveandincendiarybombs droppedontheoutskirtsofRomeon December28causedanumberof deathsandcasualtiesanddamagedextra-territorialpropertyoftheHolySee. Damagewasdoneinthesoneofthe catacombsofSt,Calixtus,St.PraetextatusandSt.DomitillaThiswasthe fourthbombingofRome.Alliedplanes maderaidsonJune19andAugust1.8. Asingleplane,whichGeneralEisenhowerofficiallydeniedwasAllied, droppedfourbombsonVaticanCity onNovember6.

IntheDecember28raidonRome, bombsdamagedthebuildinghousing thedirectorateofthecatacombs,shatteredsarcophagiwindowsandaskylight,anddamagedtheexteriorofthe ancientBasilicabythecatacombof St.Domitilla.Greaterdamagewas doneinnearbyareas,particularlyin theGarbatellaquarter,andmanywere killedorwounded.Thechapelofthe FranciscanMissionarySistersofEgypt wasamongthebuildingsstruck,Eyewitnessessaidthatincendiarybombs weredroppedbythelastplaneina largeformation.

TheresidentialquarteratGarbatello, neartheBasilicaofSanPaolo,was saidtohavebeenhit.Accordingto Naziclaims,severalhousesweredestroyedinthearea,andnumerouspersonswerekilledorinjured.Thecharge wasalsomadebytheAxisthatfifty personswereinjuredbymachine-gun fire.(ReportsoftheGermanDNB thattheBasilicaofSt.PaulOutside theWalls,situatedontheOstianWay andcontainingthemajorpartofthe bodyoftheApostle,wasseriously damagedareindicatedasuntruein dispatchesreceivedbytheN.C.W.C. fromVaticanCity.

ThecatacombsofSt.Calixtusand St.PraetextatusareontheAppian Way:thatofSt.Domitillaisonthe ViaArdeatina.Theseroadsleadsouth fromRome.Thecatacombswerereopenedinthelatterhalfofthenineteenthcentury.ThewallsofSt.CalixtusarelinedwithtombsofthirdcenturyPopes,manyofthemmartyrs (bodieslaterremovedtoSt.Peter's).

AfterthefirstbombingofRome PiusXIIhurriedoutfromVatican Citytocomforttheafflicted.The BasilicaofSanLorenzo,nearmilitary objectives,washeavilydamagedand therewereanumberofcasualties.The HolyFathervisitedtheareastricken inthesecondraidandreceivedalarge bloodstainonhiswhitecassock.

TheChurchofSantaMariadell'Orto wasvirtuallydestroyedandtheChurch ofSant'Elenaseverelydamaged.A directhitoccurredontheconvent schooloftheSistersofNotreDamede Namur,butthenuns,includingfour Americans,escapedinjury.TheRev. RafaelMelis,0.M.I.,pastorofSant' Elena,whohadgoneoutduringboth raidstohelphispeople,waskilled.

TheRomansrenderedsuchstriking demonstrationsofaffectionandgratitudefortheHolyFatherthatheappearedfourtimestoblessthethrongs,

Theinter-clubathleticcompetitions heldatLeedervilleOvaleachweek havereachedahappyconclusionfor theseason.Throughoutthesemeetingstherehasbenkeencompetition betweentheSubiacoPoliceBoys' ClubandtheSubiacoCatholicBoys, andthefinalscoresweres:Subiaco PoliceBoys,first,with64points,and SubiacoCatholicBoys,second,with 56.5points,leavingamarginof7.5 pointsbetweenus. Equipment.

Forsometimethelackofequipment hasbeenhamperingourclub.Anenergeticcommitteeofresponsiblemen hasbeenformedintheparishtoovercomethisdifficulty.Alreadytheir appealshavemetwithaverygenerousresponse,andwehavebeenableto orderthefittingsforawellequipped gymnasium.Theboy'sareextremely gratefulforallofthis,andwefeel surethatthecommitteemenwillreceiveeveryassistancefromparishioners.

AllHallows'Parishsufferedasevere losswhenMr.PeterMcMahon,Station MasteratBoulder,passedawaysuddenlyonSaturday,March11.He willbemissedalsobythosewith whomhecameincontactasarailway official,forhewasregardedasasplendidcitizenandamostefficientand courteousofficer.

LastSunday,beingHolyNameSunday,Masswasofferedfortherepose ofthesoulofthedeceased,whowas amostenergeticsecretaryoftheAll Hallows'BranchoftheSociety.Rev. FatherCarmody,ismakingfeelingreferencetothedeceased,statedthathe alwaysfeltpersonallyindebtedto Peterforthevaluableassistancehe receivedinallparishactivities,assistancethatwasalwaysgenerouslygiven, inamosthumbleandunobstrusive way.Peter,hesaid,wasamostexemplaryCatholic,andhislifeand workwaSashininglighttothose aroundhim.

Althoughinindifferenthealthfor somemonthspast,deceasedwasaregularattendantattheearlymorning week-dayMasses,whilsthewasseldomabsentfrOineveningdevotions.

OnFriday,February27,alarge gathering'ofparishionersassembledat St.Brigid'sSchool,MidlandJunction, tobidfarewelltotheirveryspecial friendandparishpriest,Rev.Father McCormack.

Afteraveryenjoyablesocialwith itemspresentedbytheschoolchildren andtalentedlocalresidents,theopportunitywastakentoexpresstoFather 'McCormacktheheartfeltthanksand appreciationofallmembersoftheparishfortheveryvaluableworkcarried outbyhim,inthefourteenyearsof hisresidenceinMidlandJunction.

Mr.OwenHanlon,onbehalfofthe parishioners,spokeinglowingtermsof themannerinwhichFatherhadministeredtothespiritualandmaterial welfareofthecommunity.Themany societiesandsodalitiesoftheChurch owedhimadeepdebtofgratitudefor hisinterestandcare,anditwaswith verysincereregretthattheyviewed hisdeparture.Hewishedhimevery successandhappinessinhisnew sphere,whereheknewhewouldalways rememberhisoldfriends.

heightandterribleappearance.The storyofhowheboreOurLordacross theriverintheguiseofachildiscommonknowledge.Baptisedbyanold hermitwholivedinthedesert,hebesoughthimtotellhimhowhemight serveChrist,andthehermitsenthim todwellonthebanksofaturbulent river,thathemightbearthewayfarersacross. Andthetimecamewhenachild calledhim,andheborehimacross, andfoundhimtobesoheavythathe hadgreattroubleinescapingawatery death.

AndtheChildtoldhimthatHewas Christ,andgavehimastaff,which, whenhesetitintheearth,boreflow ersandfruit.

St.Christopherwasmartyredon July25bythekingofthecityof Lyceawho,seeingthemiracleswhich accompaniedhisdeath,wasinstantly convertedtotheFaith.

St,ThomasAquinasisoneofthe bestknownSaintsoftheChurch.The patronofUniversitystudentsand scholars,hehaswrittennumerous booksontheologyandphilosophy.

Hewasbornabout1226nearthelittletownofAquino,andwaseducated atthefamousAbbeyofMonteCassino, andlaterattheUniversityofNaples.

Duringthelattercourseofhisstudieshewasgiventhenicknameof "TheDumbOx,"becauseofhisapparentdullnessandhissilenceatdisputations.However,hewaslaterto astoundhisprofessorandfellowstudentsbytheclarityofhisexplanationsofthemostdifficultstudies.

Hisfamousteacher,AlbertusMagnus,saidofhim:"WecallBrother Thomas'thedumbox,'butItellyou thathewillyetmakehisbellowing heardtotheuttermostpartsofthe earth."

SometimelaterAlbertwenttoParis totakethedegreeofDoctor,andSt. Thomas-accompaniedhiminorderto continuehisstudies.Herehemethis greatfriend,St.Bonaventure,and theystudiedtogetheruntilbothreceivedthedegreeofBachelorofTheology.

Possessingamarvelloustalentfor impartingknowledge,theSaintsoon becameascelebratedforhispreaching asforhislectures.Duringthecourse ofhislifetimehewrotemanyvolumes, themostimportantofwhichishisunfinished"SummaTheologica."

HisdeathoccurredonMarch7,1274, attheCistercianAbbeyofFossa Mova,nearTerracina,andbewascanonisedbyPopeJohnXXII.just49 yearslater. (TobeContinued.)
