ProspectsofaBalkanCampaign.

"Tito,"theCommander-in-Chiefof thepartisanforcesinYugoslavia,is nowrevealedtobeJosipBroz,aformermemberoftheInternationalBrigadesinSpain.Itisalsoannounced thattherankofMarshalhasbeenconferredonhim,butwhoconferreditis notstatedandisnotatallclear. KingPeter,whoalonehadauthorityto doso,hasrepudiatedhimaltogether.

Brosis,webelieve,thethirdtobear thetitleof"Tito,"thesuccessortothe RussianLebedevandtheHungarian KostaNagye.Attemptsarebeing madetorepresenthisactivityinthe InternationalBrigadesastheprofessionalactivityofasoldierseeking militaryexperience:whereasitisthe dearestsignofinternationalCommunistideology.

ButalthoughtheCroatTitohimself issoelusiveafigure,andnotasoldier butarevolutionary"decarriere,"the menabouthimarenotbyanymeans

ailrevolutionaries,norarethey 1,anymeansexclusivelyCroats.

The"People'sL-berationArmy"uses thejargono:theleft,buttherehave forsometimebeenBritishandAmericanliaisonofficersatitsheadquarters,and;tisce:tainlynotunderthe exclusivepatronageoftheSoviet Union

TheconversationsinCairobetween PresidentInonuofTurkeyandtheAlliedleaderssuggestverystronglythat amilitarycampaignintheBalkans isinprospect,perhapswiththeTurks asactiveparticipants;butnoRussian principalwenttoCairo,andtheRed Armyisnotlikelytoparticipate. Whenitbegins,allthelocalforcesin GreeceandYugoslaviawillbecome veryimportanttothemilitaryplan; hut"Marshal"Tito'swillbethemost important,simplybecauseitisthe mostnumerous.Itsimportancewill beentirelymilitary;andtheAllied HighCommandwillinsistthatboth heandGeneralMihailovichdirectthe energiesoftheirfollowersexclusively againsttheGermans.

ThemanwhohasbeenmadePresidentofthenewprovisionalassembly and"ChiefofStateintheliberated territories"istheCroat,Dr.Ivan Ribar,whowaschosenPresidentof theConstitutionalAssemblywhichmet afterthelastwartosetupthekingdomoftheSerbs,CroatsandSlovenes.

lIewasPresidentofitatthetime whenitexpelleditssixtydemocratically-electedCommunistmembers,after theCommunistshadshownthemselves unfittotakepartingovernmentby manyoutrages,includingthemurder ofaformerMinister,Drashkovitch, andthehurlingofabombatthe

PrinceRegent.LaterDr.RibarbecamefirstspeakeroftheYugoslav Parliament.Hispositionpriortothis nowappointmentwasvice-presidentof theDemocraticParty;buthehasa sonwhoiswell-knownasaCommunist,andisoneoftheleadersofthe partisans.

Dr.Ribarissupportedbythreevicepresidents:theseareMosaPijade,a confirmedCommunistandformerly fart;SecretaryinYugoslavia,whois neitherCroatnorSerb,butaJew; IvanAugustinovitch,aCroatsculptor, notknownasaCommunist-onthe contrary,herecentlymadebustsof HitlerandMussolinitotheorderof thePavelitchGovernment;andJosip Rus,aSlovene,knownnotasformally aCommunist,butasanenemyoforganisedreligion.

Fourfurthermembersofaprovisional"Government"havealsobeen appointed.NoneoftheseisexplicitlyaCommunist.VladoZecevitchisa SerbianOrthodoxpriest;ColonelSuleimanFilipovitchisaMoslem,andMoslemsdonotoftenbecomeCommunists;Dr.JosipSmodlakaisalawyer ofmoderatestanding,althoughhewas atonetimetheYugoslavMinisterto theHolySee;RadoPribivetich,anotherSerb,was,expelledfromtheDe. naocraticPartyonsuspicionofbeing anundeclaredCommunist.Othermen whohavebeennominatedforofficeare VladoRibnikar,averyrichSerb,and BozidarMacgovac,aformermember ofthePeasantParty,butexpelledfrom itforLeftWingextremism.

MainlyCommunistsorMainly Patriots?

Perhapsthemostominousfactis thatDr.RibarhimselfandDr.Smodlakaaretheonlymenassociatedwith Titowhosenamesarepubliclyknown

amongYugoslays.Theothers,allarbitrarilynominated,prestimablyby thesameauthoritythatmadeTitoa Marshal,aremenofwhomnotone Yugoslavinahundredhadpreviously heard.

ItisapparentthatCommunistinfluenceinthemovementisconsiderable, anditisdoubtlesstheCommunistdesiretocaptureitentirely.Butthe movementcontrolsoraspirestocontrolforcesclaimedtoincludenearly aquarterofamillionmenindistricts whichareverydeeplyCatholic-mainlyCroatiaandSlovenia-and,whatevertheassociationsofitsleaders, stitiibroadly-basedsupportwould hardlybeforthcomingforaregime committedtoCommunismandexclusivelyconductedbymenassociated withtheThirdInternational.Anumberofpriests,bothCatholicandOrthodox,haveidentifiedthemselveswith it,anditspublishedprogrammeis, doubtlessfortheirbenefit.'inbroad andmoderateterms,disavowing"every formofviolenceandlawlessness"as wellasthedesirefor"radicalchange" beforetheendofthewarmakesfree debatepossible.Itstressestheimportanceofprivatepropertyand"initiativeinindustryandtheeconoarkic field."

CardinalHinsleywasfondofsaying thatthetestofsincerityfortheAllies istheultimatetreatmentofPoland,to preservewhoseintegritywewentto hearwithNaziGermany.

ItmaybesaidthatforCatholics thetestofSovietsincerityisStalin's willingnesstoallowrealfreedomofreligiousworship.

Wemaytakeitforgrantedthatno Communistregimewilltolerateliberty ofthesubjectinpoliticalmatters. Therecanneverbeanoppositionin SovietRussia.

Butthecrowdingofthechurchesis notinanycaseverysignificantinview ofthesizeofthepopulationandthe fewnessofthechurches.WhenCommunismcametoMoscow,thepopulationwastwomillionandthenumber ofOrthodoxchurches560.Todaythe populationofMoscowisfourmillion andthenumberofOrthodoxchurches 22.

AstheArchbishoptellsus:"While thereisarecentremarkablegrowthin toleration,theStateassuchremains non-religious."

What,Iwonder,movedthecrowdto spontaneouscriesofgratitude?Do thepeoplerecognisethatthelessening ofpersecutionisduetoforeigninfluence?Itisanimportantpoint.

SomedaytheRussianfaithfulwill realisethattheyhavetheU.S.State DepartmentratherthantheEnglish StateChurchtothankforthepressure broughttobearontheKremlin.AmericanChristiansarenotsoeasilysatisfiedastheirEnglishbrethren.

Dr.Garbettwasapparentlydelightedthat"theRussianPatriarchatehas justbeenallowedtoissuethefirstnumberofareligiousmagazine.Thishas acirculationof10,000andcouldnot havebeenpublishedwithouttheapprovaloftheState."

Thismeansthatthecongregation whichhesawinonechurchcouldeach havehadacopyofthereligiouspaper. Nothingapparentlyisprovidedforthe restofthe180,000,000childrenofGod inRussia.

Whatarethefutureprospectsfor ChristianityintheSoviet?Humanly speaking,theyareveryunhopeful.

Whilefreedomofanti-religiouspropagandaisguaranteedtocitizensbut theworkofconversionproscribed,there isnofutureforreligionatall.

ItisanessentialpartoftheChristian faiththatthegoodtidingsoftheGospelmustbespread.

"TheMetropolitansoftheRussian Churchweremostanxioustomake itplainthattheyhadcompletefreedomofworshipwithintheirchurches." Quite.ButsincewhenhasaChristian beensatisfiedthathefulfilshisvocationbypreachingtotheconverted?

BetterOffThanInBritain?

Letussaywithalltheemphasisin ourpowerthatfreedomofreligion whichforbidsthepreachingoftheGospelisabogusfreedom.Letussay furtherthatthosewhoknowingthis, stillsaythatthereisnopersecutionin

Russia,areenemiesoftheChurchof Christ.

SpeakingattheYorkConvocation, theArchbishopofYorknotmerelyminimisedtherestrictionsimposedon ChristianityinRussia,butsaidthatin somewaysitwasbetteroffthanin GreatBritain.

"Whenwesawvariouslimitations whichmightinterferewiththefreedom oftheRussianChurchwemustnot forgetthatithadgainedintheap- pointmentofitschiefofficersaright whichdidnotexistinourown Church."

Suchstatementsasthesearedoubly mischievous.

First,theysuggestthat theRussianChurchenjoyscompete freedomoforganisation,whereasin facttheRussianChurchdidnoteven possess,aPatriarchateuntilthisyear, whentheGovernmentgavetheChurch theuseofabuildingvacatedbythe Germansattheoutbreakofwar.

Inthesecondplace,theArchbishop ofYorkknowswellthattheChurch ofEnglandcouldmadeitsownap- pointmentsto-morrowifitcaredto makethefinancialsacrificeofdisestab. lishment.Wethoughtthatitwas lefttotheDeanofCanterburytotell acredulouspublicthatChristianityis infullfloweronlywherethehammer andsicklehavedisplacedthecrossas asymbol.

Wecannotdobetterinconcluding thissurveythanquotetheRussophil MauriceHindusinhismostrecent work,"MotherRussia'":

"inmattersofprincipleanddoctrine authorityholdsasupremepositionin Russia.Ultimate,final,irrevocable authorityisvestedinfourmen:Marx, Engels,LeninandStalin.Onthesubjectofreligionthepronouncementsof thesefourmenareonlytooclearand pointed.Theirspeechesandwritings arepermeatedwithapaSsionatedenial andanimplacablerepudiationofall religioninanyandeveryform.

"ThebasicandirreconcilableantagonismbetweenreligionandBolshevismpersists.Itmustpersistuntil suchatime,ifitevercomes,when Russiansfeeltheneedofsomething mysticalwhichiscontainedneitherin theirpioneeringspiritnorintheirnew ideologynorintheteachingsofthe' fourmenwhohaveenunciateditand givenitlivingexpression"

TheWhiteRoseofYorkwasdeservedlypopularamongtheReds.Iwonderwhatsortofreceptionwouldhe giventoaCatholicmissionofgoodwillifitwereallowedtovisitMoscow. TheobligationsoftheFourthCommandmentcentreaboutthevirtueof Piety-thevirtueswhichregulatethe conductofrelativesintheirdealings withoneanother.TheCommandmentdealsnotonlywiththedutiesof childrentowardstheirparents,but alsoofparentstowardstheirchildren. Theseobligationscutbothwaysand, inthecaseofparents,bindthemto lovetheirchildrenandtocarefor theminbodyandsoul.Hence,neglectortransgressioninthismatter constitutesasinofitsownspecial kindandactsofuncharitableness, etc.,areaggravatedbybeingoffences againstpiety.

Parentsareboundtolovetheir children,andsoitiswrongforthem toentertainviolentdislikeorhatred towardstheiroffsprings,tobejealous 0:them,ortocutthemofffromthose ordinarysignsofaffectionsinspeech orconduct(excepttemporarily,by wayofpunishment).Ontheother hand,parentalaffectionmaybeoverdone,withtheresultthatchildren becomewaywardand"spoiled."Excessiveindulgenceisaguiltyweaknessandbringsbittersorrowinits train.Likewiseaparentmaysinby excessofaffectiontowardsoneparticularchildattheexpenseoftherest.

Itisindeeddifficultnottohavepreferencesbutitisperfectlypodsibleto avlidshowingtheminpracticalways.

Anotherparentaldaityistoprovide forthefutureoftheirchildrenasfar asmaybepossible,toputtheinin thewayofobtainingsuitablework, andtosupplementtheinsufficiencyof beginners'wages.Itisnotrightto leaveadolescentstotheirowndevices withoutproperprovision.

Themostimportantpartofparents' obligations,however,relatestothereligiousandspiritualwelfareofchildren.Parentsarechargedprimarily withresponsibilityfortheimmortal soulsoftheiroffspring.Thepriest andtheschoolmayassisttheminthis matter,butiftheformationofthe earlyyearshasbeenneglected,outside helpmaybetoolatetocounteractbad homeinfluences.

Inthismatteranounceofexample isworthatonofprecept.Children areveryimitativeandmoreinclined to.followwhatothersactuallydothan whattheycommand.Preceptwithoutpracticemayavailwhilethechildrenareyoungandunderstrictercontrol,foryoungchildrenmerelywonder whyparentsdonotgotoMassorthe Sacraments.Butwhentheygrow oldertheybegintoreasonthatifparentsdonottaketheirobligationsseriouslyinact,whyshouldthey?Good exampleisall-importantasaneducator.

OntheeveoftheFeastoftheImmaculateConception,throughwhose* intercessionhewasmiraculouslycured atLourdes20yearsago,Mr.John Traynor,ofLiverpool,diedinSmithdown-ToadHdspital,Liverpool,from hernia-acomplainttotallyunconnectedwithhisearlierafflictions.

Mr.Traynor'scurewasdescribed bythelateArchbishopKeating,ofLiverpool,as"inallitscircumstancesresemblingtheGospelmiracles."

Mr.Traynorwasbadlywounded whileservingintheNavyinthelast war.Asaresultofaheadwoundhe becameaconfirmedepileptic,andin additionhisrightarmwasatrophied anduselessandbothlegswerepartiallyparalysed.

HewascarriedtoLourdesona stretcherin1925forthefirstcombined pilgrimagefromLancashire,andthere, examinedattheMedicalBureau,he wasdeclared"amuseumofdiseases," Nevertheless,hewascompletelycured andcamebacktoLiverpoolasanordinarypilgrim.

Inallthewranglingabouttheinner structureofpost-warGermany,he Says,itseemstobegenerallyoverlookedthatthisishardlyamatter openfordiscussion.Withtheousting oftheNaziusurpers,therightfulorder oftheGermanReichwillagain emerge:ademocraticRepublicwitha valid,internationallyrecognisedConstitutionadoptedatWeimaronAugust 11,1919.

ThisConstitution,thoughviolated fortenyearsbyaruleofterror,is stillbindingforallGermanswhodo not,likeHitlerandtheNazileaders, *anttobecomeguiltyoftreason.

ItisequallybindingfortheUnited Nationspledgedtofightfortherestitutionoflawfulgovernment.United Nationsauthorities,shouldtheyreceivechargeofGermanterritories,can eitherbepurelymilitary;then,accordingtointernationallaw,theyare boundtorespectthelegalstructureof thecountryinall,butmilitarymatters.Ortheyintendtoexercisecivil functionsaswell:thentheirtaskcan consistonlyinhelpingthepeopleto clearawaytheremnantsofNational Socialismsothattheundiluteddemo-

craticConstitutioncanoncemoreoperate.TheymaynotimposecivilgovernmentincontemptoftheConstitution,lesttheyshouldbesuspectedof apolicyofconquestandannexation excludedbytheAtlanticCharter.

TheConstitutionofWeimarisbyno meansan3bsoletedocumentor,as somebelieve,anunrealisticcounselof perfectionthought-upbyprofessorsand idealists.Itistherealisationofthe age-oldlongingoftheGermanpeople forunity,freedomandjustice,for whichtheRevolutionof1848was wagedandwhichtheRevolutionof 1918achievedandsuccessfullydefendedagainstreactionandthedemands oftheextremists.

WhentheEmperorandallsupportersoftheoldorderdesertedtheirposts inthehourofcollapse,theSocialDemocrats,repressedanddespisedfor solong,steppedforwardtoformaProvisionalGovernmentandtolaythe groundworkforaNationalAssembly tobeelectedonthebroadestpossible foundation.

FacedbyalmostOverwhelmingdifficultiesathome,thenewGovernment remainedwithoutthesupportithad beenencouragedtoexpectfromthe WesternPowersTheRepublicwas weakened,almostasifintentionally,by ninemonthsofpeace-timefoodblockade,bythefrustrationofAustria's clearlyexpresseddesiretojointhedemocraticGermanReich,andbythe forcibleattemptsatseparatingthe GermanNorthandSouthandsetting uppuppetStatesintheRhineland.Culminatingintherevengefulpeace treaty,suchpolicyhasdonemuchto maketheprotagonistsofrepublican governmentandinternationalunderstandinglosefacebeforetheirownpeople,whileaidingallreactionaryand militaristicelements.

Yet,inspiteoftheVersailles"danse macabre,"ofunparalleledmiseryand localcivilwars,theWeimarConstitution,themostdemocraticandprogressiveeverconceived,succeededin maintainingitselfagainstallitsinner foes.ThenationalisticKappPutsch of1920wasdefeated,thoughithadoc-

cupiedBerlin,becausetheGerman peoplewholeheartedlyrespondedto theGovernment'scallforageneral strike.TheHitlerPutschof1923was quashedwithease.Whenin1931 ReichChancellorDr.HeinrichBrueningopenednegotiationsfortherestorationoftheHohenzollernmonarchy,he hadtoproceedwiththeutmostsecrecy,forhewasawarethattheoverwhelmingmajorityofthepeople,stood loyallybyitsdemocraticConstitution andwouldhavenothingofdictatorship ormonarchy.

ThefactisthatnoteventheNazis, thoughviolatingtheConstitutionin everyessentialpart,daredtoabolish itformally.Intheirdesiretoappear acompletelylegitimategovernment, Hitlerandhisassociateswenteven sofarastotaketheoathofallegiance. This,bytheway,willsimplifytheir impendingtrialsconsiderably,forit willsolvethemuchdiscussedproblem oftheircriminalstatus.Theywill betriedandpunishedbyGerman courtsacordingtotheConstitutionand lawsoftheWeimarRepublic,fortrea. son,murder,arson,robberyorwhatevercrimestheyhavecommitted. TheLawfulOrder.

conditionfortherecognitionofany Germannationalcommitteeorgovernmentisofadditionalimportancesince thepublicationofthemanifestoofthe FreeGermanyCommitteeinMoscow. Itpledgesitselftoaprogrammeof politicalandsocialdemocracythat paraphrasestheessentialprovisionsof theConstitution.

Unfortunately,theWesternPowers havesofarfailedtopromisetopostHitlerGermanyitsowndemocratic State,andGermangroupsintheUnitedStatesandGreatBritainarethereforestillhesitanttopledgethemselves toWeimarastheonlylegitimateplatform.Theanomaloussituationhas therebyarisenthatwhileSovietRussiahasmadeaconciliatorygesturetowardsdemocracy,EnglandandAmerica seemtoignoretheveryexistenceofthe peopleandtoforget-thatdemocracy isgovernmentbythepeople.

ItisonlyberecognisingWeimaras theexistinglawfulorderofGermany thatatthefallofHitleronecanavoid utterconfusionleadingtoanarchyand civilwar,which,whatevermilitary measuresmaybeenvisaged,would makethehopeforinternationalstabilityillusoryforyears.Atpresent,the widespreadfearofthatanarchy,ofservitudeunderforeignPowersoreven nationalannihilation,isthemostpotentpsychologicalweaponlefttothe HitlerGovernment.ShouldtheUnitedNations,incollaborationwiththe republicanGermanexiles,invokeWeimarasthehoped-foralternative,it wouldbecometherallyingpointfor countlessmillionsinGermanyitself. Theenemiesoftheregimewouldthen knownotonlywhattheyarefighting against,but,moreimportant,what theyarecalledtofightfor.

Clairvoyance

Canada'sundeveloped:andresourceshaveaplaceofparamountimportanceinherpost-warreconstruction plans.TheDominionbaseshernew programmeonherexperienceinsettlingdemobilisedsoldiersontheland afterthelastwar,andhereffortsto alleviateunemploymentbyresettlementinthe1930's. Thatthereis considerableexperiencetogoonisindicatedinthefollowingfigures:25,000 veteransweresettledonthelandby theSoldier-SettlementAct(19171919),while10,000unemployedfamilies returnedtothelandin1932andfollowing.

Ithasbeenaratherchequeredexperience.Morethanhalfoftheveteran,ultimatelybecameunabletomeet theirpaymentsofinterestorprincipalontheseGovernmentloans-Yet 65.6-10,518dollarsoftheoriginaloutlayof109,085,320dollarshasbeenrecoveredandanotherthirtymillions isrecoverable.Averageexpenditure perveteranhasbeen1,600dollarsonly80dollarsperday.

Oftherelieffamiliessettledonsubsistencehomesteadsinthe'thirties, lessthanone-quarterhadfailedor abandonedtheirfarmsforanyreason upuntilthenewemploymentopportunitiesofferedbythiswar.Thecost ofland-clearing.aidsandotherspecial assistancebroughttheGovernment expenseupto1,600dollarsperfamily. Anefforthasbeenmadetoinculcate inthesenewpioneercommunitiesa solidphilosophyofrurallife.Familiesareencopragedindividuallyandin groupstoutiliseStateaidstoachieve forthemselvessomemeasureofsecurity.Theyareencouragedtoform studyclubsandsuchself-helpagenciesasconsumerandproducer-cooperatives.

AllthisCanadianlandsettlement experienceisreflectedintheVeterans' LandAct,1942,whichprovidesforthe rehabilitationonthelandofdemobilisedveteransofCanada'sarmedforces. TheActitselfistheresultofthorough investigationbyaspecialcommittee oftheCanadianHouseofCdmmons, facilitatedbythepreliminaryworkof anumberofsub-committees,eachdealingwithaspecificphaseoflandsettlement.

Herearethebasicfinancialfigures oftheAct:

1.Eachveteranmustpayin.cash10 percent.ofthecostofthelandand improvements(maximum,3,000dollars),sothathemayhaveapersonal stakeintheenterprise.

2.ThetotalloanfromtheGovernmentmustnotexceedtwo-thirdsof thecostofthelandandimprovements;repaymentcontractsextend over25years,withinterestat3iper cent.perannum.

3.Aconditionalgrantequaltoonethirdofthecostofthelandandimprovements,plusthecostof'stockand equipmentuptoamaximumof1,200 dollarswillbemadetoeachsoldier settlerfullycomplyingwiththeterms ofhisagreementduringaperiodof tenyears.

Accordingtotheseprovisions,atypical160-acreplaceinamixedfarmingregionwouldcostareturningveteranadownpaymentof360dollars. Thecrowningpointofthecaseagainststerilisationisthat noparallelbetweenhumansandanimalsisvalid..Thepaucityof ourknowledge aloneshouldrestrainwould-be eugenists,foritisquitecertainthatthelawswhichgovernthe transmissionofphysicaltaintsarepracticallyunknownwhilein therealmofmoraldisorder,alltheindicationsarethatenvironmentalinfluencesareallimportant.Ineffectthismeansthat reformneednotbestifledbythefatalismofknownorsupposed hereditarylaws.Environmentcanandmustbechanged:and hereisawholenewfieldinexperinientaladulteducation.But tocommencewithbarbarousnotionsofphysicalmutilationis ratherlike"theobjectallsublime"oftheEmperorin"The Mikado."Thelogicalresultsofmakingthepunishmentfitthe crimewillhetheamputationofthearmsofthieves,thelegsofdeserters,andthegougingoutoftheeyesoftheenvious.This wouldbetoimitatetoocloselythemethodsoftheMikado's minionsandnoamountofverbiagewouldsufficientlyconcealthe ideaofretributionundertheeuphemism"remedy."

Yetthesepractices,fantasticastheysound,wouldmoresurely"cure"thecrimesthanwouldsterilisationthediseasetowhich itisapplied.Forthefinalargumentagainstitisthatitwould notachievewhatitpretendsto.Actually,sterilisationwould onlyincreasethenumberofsexoffences,foritleavessexualdesireunimpairedandfreedofthepossibilityofparenthoodandits attendantrsponsibilities,thepervertisencouragedtotakeadvantageofhisimmunity-themoresosincehehasbeenbrandedasa socialmenaceandanirredeemableoutcast.Mrs.CardellOliver statedthat"theevilstartsasmal-educationoftheinfantchildslumdwellings,smallflats,rottensexpicturesandchildrenbeing allowedtoroamthestreetsatnight,seeingsightsofperversion andlawlessness."Weconcurentirely.Andifthatistheroot ofthetrouble,itisobviouslytherightendatwhichtostartreform.Underthepresentorderweallowanignorantanduncaredforchildtogrowintoanirresponsibleanddangerousadultwhom wethendesiretopunishasacriminal.Thisisbothillogicaland unjust,andmakesnocontributionwhatevertothesolutionofan increasingproblem.

FatherBreslinsaidthatnoone couldbeatruefollowerofJesus ChristanddenyHisDivinity.Noone :wasentitledtothenameofChristian whodidnotbelievethatChristis God.Itwasthebasicdogmaofour holyreligion.ForifHewerenotGod thenHewasamadman,afool.

Comebackwithmeinspirittothe sceneenactedonGoodFridaymorningbeforetheSupremeTribunalof theJewishpeople.Jesuswason trialforHislife.Herealisedwhat pas HighPriestputs thequestion:"Doyouclaimtobe God?"AndJesusanswered,"Ido." TheJewsinventedotherchargeswhen theybroughtHimbeforetheRoman Governor,becausetheyknewPilate wasnotinterestedinwhattheyconsideredblasphemy.ButtheycondemnedHimandHediedforsaying HewastheirGod.Mereadoptive Sonshipwouldnothavebeenablasphemousclaim,TheHighPriest asked(wasitrealSonship?WasHe claimingtobetheirGodinthestrict sense?AndJesussays,"Yes."If Hediedforafalsehood,Hewaseither afooloraknave.HewasdeliberatelyandcallouslydeceivingHisfollowers;orelseHewassufferingfromdelusions.TheJewishCourthadnoalternative.Itsmemberseitherhadto adoreHimorsentenceHimtodeath. Therewasnologicalgroundforcompromise.

Soitistothisday.Menmust eitheracceptHisclaimtoDivinity orrejectHimtotally.Noreasonable beingexaminingChrist'scredentials canafterwardsremainneutral.He waseitherGodorafraud.IfHe (wereanimposterthentheChristian Religioniswrong.

Everyheresyhasbeenanindirect attackontheDivinityofChrist.The teachingauthorityoftheCatholic Churchisproudhumanarrogance, senselesstyranny,wereitnotthatshe teachesbyHisauthorityandHeis God.Soeveryblow,althoughaimed ather,hasbeenindirectlyaimedat Him,sinceHeisherguarantee.Her infallibility,herSacramentscamefrom Him.Toquestionherteachingisto questionHisrighttoteach,toquestionHisrightistoquestionHisDivinity.

"WhatthinkyeofChrist,whoseSon islie?"isaquestionasvitallyimportant,aspregnantwithconsequences,to-dayasit.wasnineteencenturiesago.Uponitsacceptancedependstheeternalsalvationofmen. Uponitsacceptancedependseven men'stemporalhappinessandwelfare

However,theproofsthatJesusis Godareoverwhelmingandleaveno roomfortheleastdoubt.Hedid thethingsthatonlyGodrando.He saidthethingsthatonlyGodcansay. Ileflungachallengeintheteethof thescoffers.Hedefiedthemtokill

Theywerethemselvesthebestwitnessesoftheirownduplicity.

OnlyGodcanforgivesin.Itisan

OurDivineLordforgavesinsinHisownName andbyHisownauthorityasbeingthe personagainstwhomtheoffencewas committedandwhen,asontheoccasionofthemansickofthepalsy,the unbelieversqUestionedHisaction,He workedaphysicalmiracletoprove thattheinvisiblespiritualcurehad alsotaken,place.HeforgaveMagdalengravesinsbecauseofthegreat lovesheshowedtoHim.Thesins werecommittedagainstthePersontowardsWhomsheshowedherlove, namely,Himself.

JesusclaimedthatHewasGod.He emphaticallydeclaredittoHisdisciples,tothepeopleandtoHisjudges. OntheoccasionofthevisitmadeduringHispubliclifetoJerusalemHe said:"Godsolovedtheworldasto giveHisonlybegottenSonsothatall thatbelieveinHimmaynotperish butmayhavelifeeverlasting."

JesuspraisedandrewardedSt. PeterforhisprofessionoffaithinHis Divinity.Itwouldnotrequireaninspirationforadoptedsonshiporsonshipinanywidesense;itmusthave beenrealSonship,notsomethingspecialtoChristinsenselessthanreal Sonship.

HisownpropheciesproveHisDivinity.Jesusforetoldthingswhichactuallyhappenedlateron.OnlyGod canforeseethefuture.Heforetold Hisdeathanditsattendantcircumstances,thatHewouldbecrucified, thatPeterwoulddenyHimandJudas betrayHim.HealsoforetoldthedestructionofJerusalem.Thoseprophecieswerefulfilledtotheletter. Thefulfilmentoftheseprophecies provesthatChrist'steachingwasthe teachingofGod.ButJesustaught thatHewasGod.ThereforeChrist isGod.Theconclusionisinescapable. HeistrulyGodwhoiworksmiracles inHisownnameandbyHisown power.Jesusdid,andsoHeisGod. TheApostles,ProphetsandSaints ascribedtheirmiraclestoGodandacknowledgedtheirpowercamefrom Him,TheyworkedwondersinHis name.Thecircumstancesortheir ownstatementsshowthis.ButJesus didtheminHisownnameandbyHis ownpower.ForHimthegiftofmiracleswasnotaborrowedgift,but somethingessentiallyHisown.

Resurrectionandthe

Hispubliclifewasablazeofmiracles.Heraisedthedead,restored sighttotheblind,hearingtothedeaf: natureherselfobeyedHim,thewinds andthewaveshearkenedtoHis voice,thedumbspokeagian,lepers werecleansed.Hispresenceevenwas notnecessary.Hecuredatadistance,MoreoverHeworkedthose miraclestoconfirmHisclaimtobe God.AtnotimedidHesayHedid thesewondersmerelyasalegateof God.IfHewereamessengerofGod andnothingmoreHewasboundto havemadesomepublicacknowledgement'ofit.OnlyGodcanworka miracle.SowhenGodtheFatherset Hisseal-miracles-onChrist'steachingthatChristwasGoditmustnecessarilyhaveHisfullapproval.Heis responsiblebecauseweacceptthe teachingHehassealed.Godcantolerateerror,butHecannotbethe causeoferror,sinceHeisabsolute Truth.Hehacledusintoerrorif ChristisnotGod.

Jesus,eventhemostrabidatheist admits,wasaperfectman.Tothose whowithheartsfullofhatewatched Himdaily,observedHiseveryaction, listenedtoHiseveryword,Heissued thechallenge,"Pointoutonefaultof mine-whichofyoucanconvinceme ofsin?"Andtheycouldn't.And He,theperfectman,claimedtobe God.

What,then,didthismostperfectindividualonthestageofhistorysay aboutHimself?Hewho,inthe mindsofallmen,believersandunbelievers,ismostperfectshouldbe bestabletoanalyseHisownperfect personality.TheGospelsarecrowded withstatementsofChristaboutHimself.Eachoneofthemisclothed withsimplicity.Notoneofthemis wrappedinthetinselofhumanboasting.Everyoneofthemisreducible tothis.ChristclaimedtobeGod,the SonofGod,notinthegeneralsense inwhichmenareentitledtocall

themselvesthechildrenorsonsof God,butinarealandnaturalway, inawaywhichsetHimapartfrom thisrestofmenbecause,inverytruth, HewasonewithGod,Thisisthe truthwhichthefollowingGospelquotations,chosenatrandomfromscores ofotherthatmighthavebeentaken, insistentlyandinvinciblyshowforth:

"IandtheFatherareOne"(St. John,X,30).

"WhoseethmeseeththeFather also."

"Iamtheresurrectionandthelife; hethatbelievethinMe,althoughhe bedead,shalllive;

BorninNewtown,N.S.W.,onSeptember29,1860,shespentherearlylife inNewtownandSydney,In1884she marriedWalterJosephFitzpatrickat VillaMaria,Hunter'sHill.TheylivedinvariouspartsofNewSouth\Vales until1898,whentheymigratedtoW.A. andsettledinHighgateHillforsome months.ThenthehomeinVictoria Parkwasboughtandthefamilyhave residedthereeversince.

Herhusbandpredeceasedherin 1924.Sheissurvivedbyonesonand sixdaughters.TheeldestsonLieut. W.V.Fitzpatrick)waskilledinthe lastwar,andasonanddaughterdied ininfancy.

FortifiedbytheritesofHolyChurch, shepassedtohereternalrewardafter alongillness.RequiemMasswas celebratedbyRev.FatherKearinat St,Joachim'sChurchat7.45a.m.The funeralleftthechurchat1.30p.m. Rev.FatherFaheyofficiatedatthe graveside,Rev.FathersKearinand Costelloealsobeingpresent.

askedhim,"Dossthoubelieveinthe SonofGod?"Heansweredandsaid "WhoisHe,Lord,thatImaybelieve inHim?"AndJesussaidtohim: "ItisHethattalkethwiththee." Andhesaid:"Ibelieve,Lord,"and fallingdownheadoredHim."

AfterthefallofAdamandEvethe AlmightymercifullypromisedaRedeemertothehumanrace.That hope,thatexpectationofaSaviour whoshouldrestorethefallendestiniesofmenandmakegoodtheirforfeitdprivilegesanddistinctions,God keptalivedownthecenturiesasthe ye.,grew.Thepeopt.:Hehad chosenasHisownmightrebelagainst Himandtheirbetterjudgment,again andagain,astheydid.Thepeople ofGodmightcome,astheyrepeatedlydid,toforgetGodandworshipfalse godsoftheirownmaking.They mightcome,astheydidmorethan onceintheirtragichistory,toapos- tatisefromtheirGodandcontaminatethemselveswithallthehideous vicesofthepaganswithwhomthey cameincontact.TheyweretorevoltagainsttheGodwhowastheir KingaswellastheirMaker.But onethingtheyneverdid:theynever, throughallthevicissitudesoffortune thatdistinguishtheirhistory,lostsightofthatoriginaltraditionthat someday,somehow,inGod'sowngood time,theRedeemershouldcome.

Theyforgotalmosteverythingelse: theExpectedofNations,asthey cametocalltheawaitedMessias,they neverentirelyforgot.Theycouldwanderdreadfullyfarfromthepath ofvirtue,astheyoftenenoughdid, andcontaminatetheveryskieswith theiriniquities.Onethingtheynever lostsightofentirely,asanation:they awaitedtheMessiaswhoshouldrestore theirfallenfortunes.

Wecancomparethebooksofthe OldTestamenttoavastcanvas.On itaportraitwaspainted.Eachpro- phetorauthoraddedhissharetothe pictureofthecoiningMessias,untila completedelineationfinallyemerged, Thisprocess,remember,coveredthousandsofyears."BeliefinHimthat wastocome"isthethreadthatruns throughtheOldTestament.Itistrue tosaythattheBiblemaybedivided intotwoparts:

Christexpected:TheOldTestament.

Christcome:TheNewTestament.

Againandagaininthecourseof theirhistorytheAlmightyraisedup mouthpiecestoHimself,priestsandKings,Judgesandprophets,who preachedthecomingoftheMessias, thePromisedOne.Thepersonality andcircumstancesandcharacteristics oftheSaviourwerepredictedinfull detail.Soaccuratelyindeedthatthe priests,sagesandprophetswrote morelikeeyeiWitnesses,presentat happenings,thanseers.

TheveryfirstbookoftheOldTestamentcalledGenesisbeginsthe story.TheRedeemeristocomeof thedescendantsofAbrahamandof thetribeofJudaandhouseofDavid. Itisnarroweddowntoaparticular family.HeshouldbebornofavirgininBethlehematatimewhenthe worldwouldnotbedisturbedbywar. AspecialprophetwouldannounceHis comingandprepareHisway.His

namewouldbecalledJesusandHe wouldbetheChrist.Theydistinctly callHimGod.Notonlyonesentby God,butGodHimself.

TheveryexactdateofHisbirthwas foretold.Itwouldbeatimewhena KingofthetribeofJudashouldnot anylongerruleoverthechildrenof Israel.Thiswasexactlyfulfilled.The ProphetDanielevenforetoldthe exactnumberofyearsthatwould elapsebeforeHiscoming,thepresence oftheMagiatHisbirth;eventhe giftstheyweretobringHim.And yetcriesandgreatgriefwouldbe heardinthelandaboutthetimeof Hisbirth;thatHewouldlivein EgyptandNazareth;thatHewould bepoorandinlaboursfromHis youth;thatHewouldenterJerusalem ridingonanass.Hissufferingsand deathwereforetoldwithbreathtaking precision.Hisbetrayalfor30pieces ofsilver,Hisscourging,beingspat upon,crucified,lotscastforHisgarments,givenvinegarandgallto drink.

Ifhehaddeignedtogivenoother credentialsthanthese,nootherproof ofHisDivinity,thisverificationin Himselfofthismarvellousseriesof propheciesshouldhavebeenenough. It,showsHeisveryGodHimself,for theMessiaspromisedwastobenone otherthanGod.

Time,placeandconditionshadbeen predictedandfulfilledtotheletter, butwhenHecameuntoHisownchosenpeopletheyreceivedHimnot,they rejectedandcrucifiedtheirGod;in theirblindragetheytriedtoextinguishtheLightthathurtthembyits strongshining,fortheirworkswere evilandtherebyunwittinglyfulfilled anotherprophecy,.

Itisclearthatthefulfilmentofall thesepropheciesinanindividualcould nothavebeenduetochanceorhuman planning.butmusthavebeenthe workofGod.Christisthereforethe promisedRedeemer.ButthatRedeemerwasalsoaccordingtomanyof thepropheciesGodandtheSonof God.Anordinarymancouldnot bebornofavirgin,norpickthetown ofhisbirth.Theunbornisnotconcultedaboutthetribeintowhichhe wouldliketobeborn.

Theauthenticityandveracityof theGospelshavebeenestablishedbe yondalldoubt,.Asonelearnedinfidelputit,"theinventorsofsuch characterasourDivineLordwouldbe morewonderfulthanth,...rhero'NonCatholiccriticshavesetouttodisprove theGospels.Theirlearnedresea-as haveonlyresultedinsnlicinfyin? position.Theyhavebeensiltedand examinedmorethananyotherancient documents.Indeedwhatseemedthe weaknessoftheGospels-liketheapparentcontradictions-actuallybecameunderexpertinvestigationthe greatestproofoftheirveracity.Thus doesGodturnthetablesonHisenemies.NoonewouldhaveeverdoubtedtheintegrityoftheGospelswere itnotforthefactthattheycontain adivinelyimposedmoralcodeunwelcometotheimmoral.IftheChurch cancelledthesixthandninthCornmandmentsmanyscepticswouldovernighthetransmogrifiedintoenthusiasts.

Lacordiarehastrulysaid,"Todeny thehistoricalrealityofthelifeof JesusChristisanactoffolly,anact ofdesperation.Andyouwonderper- hapswhythishasbeendone,directly orindirectly,withorwithoutprecaution.ItisbecausethehistoricalrealityofJesusChristonceadmitted,or takenforgranted,thesentimentof Hisdivinitybeginstoshineinthe mind,anditisdifficultnottoyield moreorleSs.Itwasnecessaryto gathercloudsaroundanexistenceso remarkable,connected,moreover,with somanythingswhichareremarkable also.Weretheresultofnegationonly tocallforthproofofthefact,itwould alreadyhaveprovokeddiscussion,and discussionisofvalueonunattackable

ground;itsprestigeseemstobetherebylessened.Itisbetter,infine,to attemptsomethingthantoremaininactive.Throwallthemudyoucan; someofitisboundtostick.Then, hatredblinds,itrendersthevisioninsensibletotheclearestevidence;and, inthissense,itwasfittingthatthe historicalrealityofJesusChristshould beattacked,asaproofoftheintellectualdiminutionofthosewhobecome Hisenemies,Truthgainsbytheattacksofthemindasbythoseofthe body;and,tranquilintheinaccessibleeyriewhereGodhasplacedher, sureofherself,howevershemaybe attacked,shecansaytoman,imitatingacelebratedline,'Contest,ifthou canst:andifthoudar'st,consent!'"
