CatholicBiblicalScholarsCelebrateTheir DeclarationofIndependence-
HowRevelationSurvivedRationalism
PopeLeoXIIIDeliveredReligionFrom theScientificObscurantismofModernism
ByRICHARDKUGELMAN,C.P.
Wecommemoratewithgratitudethe anniversariesofthegreatdocumentsof historythathaveforwardedhuman freedomandprogress.InNovember last,alltheCatholicbiblicalscholars throughouttheworldcelebratedthe fiftiethanniversaryoftheirDeclarationofIndependence,theEncyclical Letter,"ProvidentissimusDeus,"of PopeLeoXIII.
AtthecloseofthenineteenthcenturytheauthorityoftheBibleasa trustworthyrecordofGod'srevelation wasreelingunderthepowerfulattacks ofRationalism.The"BiblicalQuestion,"theproblemofreconcilingthe lackoferrorinaninspiredBiblewith thefindingsofscienceandhistory,becamethedominantreligiousquestion oftheday.TheRationalistsboasted ofhavingdiscoveredhistoricalinaccuracies,scientificerrors,fables,and mythsintheSacredBooks.TheBible, therefore,couldnotbeanauthoritative recordofGod'srevelation.
ProtestantSeithersurrenderedthe fieldtoRationalism'anddeniedthe divineinspirationandinerrancyofthe SacredScriptures,orwaveringlyheld ontotheirtraditionaldoctrine.Catholicswerealsodisturbed.Many viewedwithalarmtheprogressof scienceandhistory,asifthosefieldsof inquirywereinimicaltoreligion. Cthersadoptedapositionofcompromise,ofappeasement.Theyrestricted inspirationandinerrancytothereligiousandmoraltruthscontainedinthe 'SacredBooks.Inprofanematters, e.g.,historicalincidentsunrelatedto faith,theyconcededthatthesacred authorshadbeenlefttotheirown resourcesandcouldthereforeerr.

TheEncyclicalcontainsdirections forthetrainingandguidanceofCatholicbiblicalscholarsintheirinterpretationanddefenceoftheSacredBooks. TheHolyFatherenunciatesveryclearlytheprinciplesthatmustguidethem inthesolutionofthe"BiblicalQuestion."
Twotruthsconstitutethefoundation whichsupportstheedificeofsound biblicalscholarship:theplenaryinspirationoftheSacredScripturesand theauthorityoftheChurchastheir divinelyappointedguardianandinterpreter.
"ThebooksoftheOldandNewTestaments,wholeandentire,withalltheir parts aretobereceivedassacred andcanonical.AndtheChurchholds themassacredandcanonical becausehavingbeenwrittenunderthe inspirationoftheHolyGhost,they haveGodfortheirauthor."WithirrefutablelogicPopeLeodrawstheconclusionwhichfollowsfromthisinfalliblepronouncementoftheVatican Council.
"Hence,becausetheHoly GhostemployedmenasHisinstruments,wecannot,therefore,saythatit wastheseinspiredinstrumentswho, perchance,havefallenintoerror,and nottheprimaryauthor.For,bysupernaturalpower,Hesomovedandimpelledthemtowrite-Hesoassisted themwhenwriting-thatthethings whichHeordered,andthoseonly,they. firstrightlyunderstood,thenwilled faithfullytowritedown,andfinally expressedinaptwordswithinfallible truth.Otherwiseitcouldnotbesaid thatHewastheAuthoroftheentire Scripture."
TheabsoluteinerrancyoftheSacred Scripturesisanecessarycorollaryof thedoctrineofinspiration.Toadmit errorinanyofthesacredwritings wouldbetocommitthecolossalabsurdityofaccusingGodofhavingbeen Himselfdeceivedorofdeceivingus."It followsthatthosewhomaintainthat anerrorispossibleinanygenuinepassageofthesacredwritingseitherperverttheCatholicnotionofinspiration ormakeGodtheauthorofsucherror." Thereforetherecanbenocontradiction withinthepagesoftheSacredBooks themselves, orbetweenthecertain teachingsofScriptureandanyscientificorhistoricaltruth.Truthcannot contradicttruth, becausetheauthor andsourceofalltruthisGod."

Asforthepretendedcontradictions betweenhistoryandtheSacredBooks, hereagaintheguidingprincipleisthe onenessoftruth.Historicaltruth cannotbeatvariancewithanygenuinepassageofSacredScripture. The HolyFathercomplainsjustlyoftheunfairnessofcertainhistoriansandantiquarians:"Intheireyesaprolanebook orancientdocumentisacceptedwithouthesitation, whilsttheScripture,if theyonlyfindinitasuspicionoferror, issetdownwiththeslightestpossible discussionasquiteuntrustworthy."
Farfrombeingopposedtothesacred writings,thesciencesofhistory,archaeologyandphilologyareveryuseful aidstotherightunderstandingofthe sacredtext.Inspeakingtomen throughmenGodclothedHisrevelationintheidiomandthoughtpatterns ofthesacredauthorsandtheircontemporaries.Moreover,whileintended forallmenofeverycentury,theSacredScripturesweregivenfirsttothe contemporariesoftheinspiredauthor' Inorderrightlytounderstandthefull meaningofthesacredtext,tocatch allthenuancesofthethought,wemust projectitagainstthebackgroundof thehistoryoftheinspiredauthorsand theirfirstreaders.IntheSacredScripturestheHolyGhostisteachingus throughthemediumoftheAncient Semiticlanguages,HebrewandAramaic,andthecommonGreektongue oftheHellenisticperiod.PopeLeo thereforeurgesCatholicbiblicalscholarstocultivatehistoricalandphilologicalstudies.
Thesecondfundamentaltruthby whichbiblicalscholarsmustbeguided,thecornerstonethatsupportsthe entireedificeofsoundScripturalscience,istheauthorityoftheChurchas thedivinelyappointedguardianand onlyauthenticinterpreterofthesacredwritings.TheCouncilofTrent decreed:"Inthingsoffaithand morals,belongingtothebuildingup ofChristiandoctrine,thatistobeconsideredthetruesenseofHolyScripture whichhaF.beenheldandisheldbyour HolyMothertheChurch,whoseplace itistojudgeofthetruesenseand interpretationoftheScriptures."

Thathemayknowthemindofthe Church,theCatholicbiblicalscholar mustbewellgroundedintheologyand deeplyreadinthecommentariesofthe holyFathersandDoctorsofthe Church.Inmattersoffaithand morals,theFathersarewitnessesto Tradition,theunwrittensourceofGod's revelation.ThereforethePontiffdeclares:"TheholyFathersareofsupremeauthority,whenevertheyallinterpretinoneandthesamemanner anytextoftheBible,aspertainingto thedoctrineoffaithormorals;fortheir unanimityclearlyevincesthatsuchan interpretationhascomedownfromthe ApostlesassamatterofCatholicfaith."
Sincetheso-calledReformationin thesixteenthcentury,non-Catholics havebeenaccusingtheChurchofhamperingtheresearchofCatholicbiblical scholarsbymakingherselfthefinal judgeofthemeaningofthesacred text.Truelibertycannotexistwithoutsubmissiontolegitimateauthority. Thismeanstheydenythereisany suchthingasinspirationorrevelation. Theprincipleofprivateinterpretation hasproducedtheabsurdityofselfstyledChristianswhorejectthehistoricityoftheGospelsanddenythe divinityofChrist.
