WhyWeVenerateRelicsandImages

Wehaveseenthat,byvirtueofthe FirstCommandment,wegiveadoration toGodandworshipofasecondary naturetoOurLady,theSaintsandthe Angels.Honourispaidtocreatures whoreflectthegoodnessofGodlargely byvenerationofobjectswhichrepresentthepersonwewishtohonour.So wehavestatues,pictures,medals,etc., whichareblessedbytheChurch,and arethereforetobetreatedwithrespect. Thesepiousobjectsshouldneverbe leftcarelesslyaboutwheretheywould bedishonoured,butwhenwornout shouldbeburned.Objectsconnected directlywiththeSaints,suchasportionsoftheirbodiesorbelongings,are

knownasrelics,andreceiveaproportionatelygreaterreverence.Inboth instances,however,therelicsandsacred imagesarenotveneratedontheirown accountorbecauseoftheirintrinsic virtueasmaterialthings,butbecause oftheirrelationandmoralconnection withthepersonsdeservingourveneration.Theformsofexternalhonour paidtorelicsandimagesarehence calledrelative,andareclassifiedaccordingtothedegreeofvenerationdue tothem.Thustheadorationofthe Cross(crucifix)onGoodFridaymorningorthevenerationofarelicofthe TrueCrossiscalledlatria,becauseitis toGodthatourworshipisdirected.

KneelingbeforeastatueofOurLady isanactofrelativehyperdulia,notof Divineworship;orbeforeastatueor pictureofaSaint,relativeduliaveneration.

Thewholeinterpretationofsuch externalactsofworshipdependsupon theintentionoftheworshipper'smind inmakingthem.Wekneelbefore imagesbutnottothem.Greatrespectisthereforeduebothtorelics andimages,andanyintentionaldisrespectwouldconstituteasinofsacrilege.Especiallydoesthe'ChurchhonourtherelicsoftheSaintsandMartyrs,fortheirholybodieswerethelivingmembersofChristandtemplesof theHolyGhost,andmanymiracles havebeenwroughtthroughthem.This doesnotimplyaCatholicbeliefin somemagicalvirtueorphysicalcurativeefficacyresidingintherelicitself, butratherthattherelicsoftheSaints weretheoccasionofGod'sworkingmiracles.

Thepracticeofveneratingimages andrelicsdatesbacktotheearliest Christianages.RepresentationsofOur Lord,OurLadyandtheSaintsareprofuseintheCatacombsandtheearly Christianstookspecialpainstocollect andpreservethebodiesofthemartyr's.TheChurchhasfollowedthis exampleandrelicsoftheSaintsareenshrinedinthealtarstoneattheconsecrationofachurch,andintheexpositionofrelicsforpublicvenerationon theSaint'sfeastday.SothatCatholicsintheirprivatedevotionallives areencouragedtohavepicturesand statuesofOurLord,OurLady,andthe Saintsintheirhomes,andtohonour themappropriatelybyplacingfresh flowersandcandlesbeforethem.It isaverycommendablepracticetorecitefamilyprayersbeforeapictureof theSacredHeart,theCrucifix,ora statueofOurLady.Itillustratesthat ahomeisdeeplyimbuedwiththefull CatholicspiritandshouldinduceGod's specialblessingonthemembersof suchafamily.

Thelongestaccountofthisprodigy ofvariedlearningwhichwehavein EnglishisthatgivenbyaPresbyterian clergyman,Dr.Duffield,inhisbook entitled,"TheLatinHymn-Writersand TheirHymns"(pages149-168).We readthatthe"Cripple""rapidlymasteredLatin,Greek,Arabic,and(probably)Hebrew,sothathepossessed themequallywellwithhisvernacular speech."Inaddition,"hebecamean excellenthistorian,adistinguished musician,andarenownedphilosopher andtheologian.Inmathematicshe wasequallyskilledandingenious."He invented,oratleastwroteexhaustivelyupon,theastrolabe;composed hymnsandotherversewithgreatmetricalskill.

LittleisknownofthelifeofJanuarius,towhomthepeopleofNapleshave awonderfuldevotion.Hisnameisassociatedwith"thefactthatwhenthe martyr'sblood,keptdriedinasmall glassphial,isputinproximitytohis head,itiswonttomeltandbubblein astrangewayasthoughithadbeen freshlyshed."Formorethan400 yearsthisliquefactionofthebloodhas takenplaceatfrequentintervals.This writerwitnessedthemarvelononeoccasion.Manyattemptshavebeen madetoexplainthephenomenon.The peopleofNaplesregarditassupernatural.

ScientificView.

Afewfactsaboutthewonderthat happensatNaples-theliquefactionof thebloodofSt.Januarius-maybegiven.Thisisnottheonlycaseofthe kind:itisthemostwidelyknown.The firstcertainrecordofthe"miracle" datesfromtheyear1389.In1902ProlessorSperindeopassedarayoflight throughtheupperpartofthephial duringliquefactionandexaminedthis beamspectroscopically.Theexperimentyieldedthedistinctivelinesofthe spectrumofblood.Thiswouldappeartoprovethatthereareatleast tracesofbloodinthecontentsofthe phial.Otherexperimentsshowaremarkablevariationinvolume.A changegoesoninthishermitically sealedvesselwhichmakesthecontents heavierorlighterinaratioroughly proportionaltotheirbulk.TheChurch authoritiesatNaplesarenotinclined toletirreverentandunbelievingpeoplestudytheaffairastheywouldlike to.Theybelieveinthemiraclethemselves;theydonotaskanyoneelseto doso.Theyconsiderthattheirown scholars,scientistsandecclesiasticsare justascompetentasanyothersto studythequestionandtoarriveata reasonableverdict.

Whatactuallytakesplaceontheoccasionoftheliquefactionoftheblood ofSt.Januariusmaythusbedescribed.Inasilverreliquary-aflagonshapedflaskfourinchesinheightand morethantwoinchesindiameterthereisasolidmass,darkincolour,of substancewhichshowsnodisplacementwhenthereliquaryisinvertedor shaken.Thedarksolidmassisprotectedbytwothicknessesofglass. AtthecloseofthenineteenthcenturytheauthorityoftheBibleasa trustworthyrecordofGod'srevelation wasreelingunderthepowerfulattacks ofRationalism.The"BiblicalQuestion,"theproblemofreconcilingthe lackoferrorinaninspiredBiblewith thefindingsofscienceandhistory,becamethedominantreligiousquestion oftheday.TheRationalistsboasted ofhavingdiscoveredhistoricalinaccuracies,scientificerrors,fables,and mythsintheSacredBooks.TheBible, therefore,couldnotbeanauthoritative recordofGod'srevelation.

Asforthepretendedcontradictions betweenhistoryandtheSacredBooks, hereagaintheguidingprincipleisthe onenessoftruth.Historicaltruth cannotbeatvariancewithanygenuinepassageofSacredScripture.The HolyFathercomplainsjustlyoftheunfairnessofcertainhistoriansandantiquarians:"Intheireyesaprolanebook orancientdocumentisacceptedwithouthesitation,whilsttheScripture,if theyonlyfindinitasuspicionoferror, issetdownwiththeslightestpossible discussionasquiteuntrustworthy."

Therearesixfoliosandtheyhave beenidentifiedbyDr.KathleenMulchrone,ProfessorofOldandMiddleIrish andCelticPhilologyinU.C.G.They werepreservedthroughthecareof someunknownbookbinder,whofound theminthecoverofanunimportant 17th.Centurymanuscriptwhichthey hadbeenusedtostiffenandplaced theminthebox.

EverythingknownaboutSt.Patrick wascollectedintotheTripartiteLife. Theoriginalhasbeenlostandtheonly twocopiesknownprevioustothislast discoveryareinEngland-theEgertonversionintheBritishMuseumand theRawlinsonmanuscriptintheBodleianLibrary,Oxford.

Thefragmentsnowfound,whichinclude,intheopinionofDr.Mulchrone fromone-thirdtoone-fifthofthetext,, areofaboutequalagewiththeothers.

Thereare1361Irishmanuscriptsin theRoyalIrishAcademy,andEugene O'Curry,thegreatscholar,startedthe Academy'scatalogueofthemin1843.

Sincethedeathofthelasteditor, Dr.E.J.Gwynn,ofT.C.D.,Dr.Mulchronehasbeeninchargeofthework,for whichaGovernmentgranthasbeen given.Thecatalogueanditsindices arenowcomplete.

LastChristmas,Mrs.ElizabethFitzpatrick,collaboratorinthework, foundaboxandaskedDr.Mulchrone tocometoDublintoexaminethecontents.

Theboxcontainedafragmentary treatise,portionsofagrammatical tract,partofacopyofLebarGabal (BookofInvasions),poems,slipsof vellumandpaperwiththewritingseffacedorindecipherablewithage,and, lastofall,blackenedwithageandillusage,portionsoftheTripartiteLife ofSt.Patrick.AllthedocumentsbelongedtotheStoweCollection.

ThisistheseconddiscoveryconnectedwiththisrecordofSt.Patrick's lifetobemadeinthelastfewyears. In1941Dr.RichardHayes,Director oftheNationalLibrary,foundtwo foliosbelongingtotheRawlinsonversion.

TheCatalogueofIrishManuscripts intheAcademycontains3,500pages, withaveryshortdescriptionofeach item.Therewillbetwoindices,one withthefirstlinesandtheotherageneralindex.Alistofthewritersand scribeswillbeincluded.

ThecompletedworkwillbeafoundationforahistoryofIrishmanuscript literature,Dr.Mulchronesaid.

OnDecember14,theChapelofSt. Dominick'sPriory,Dongarra,wasthe sceneofaveryimpressiveandsolemn ceremony,whenSisterM.Dominicand SisterM.Anthonymadetheirfinalprofessionofvowsinthehandsofthe MotherPrioressGeneraloftheDominicanOrderinWA.,andinthepresenceofHisLordshipDr.Gummer,of Geraldton.Rev.FathersGallagher. andMoffatassistedHisLordshipat thecelebrationofHolyMass,which immediatelyprecededtheceremony.

Thenovices,havinglightedcandles, advancedtothefootofthealtar, wheretheymadeprofessionandconcludedtheirpromiseofobedienceto God,HisHolyMother,St.Dominic, andtheMotherPrioressGeneralwith thesignificantwords,"untildeath."The blessingandconferringoftheveilsimmediatelyfollowed.Whilethechoir sang"PosuitSignum,"HisLordship blessedandbestowedtherings,which areofgoldandeachinscribedwiththe mottochosenbytheSister.The prostrationbythetwofinallyprofessed SistersinthecentreoftheChapel-demonstrationofcompleteabnegationcompletedtheProfessionCeremony.
