Whereitispracticable,Irecommend thattheyoungerboysshouldbeencouragedtoreadaloud.

Themodificationmadethisyearin theJuniorSchoolsystem-thesubdivisionoftheclasses-hasprovednoless advantageoustotheboysconcerned, andthemastersareunanimousintheir approvalofit.Thiswasapractical applicationoftheprincipleIstressed lastyear, namely, thatconstantcare mustbeexercisedtoseethataboy isnotattemptingtasksbeyondhis strengthorunsuitedtohisdegreeof maturity.

ThesecondreasonwhyIstressthe urgencyoftheproblemsofeducationis thatmanyboyshave,asaresultofthe war,beendeprivedofthehelpand guidanceoftheirfather;andeven Wherebothparentsareathomethe warhasinmanycasesupsettheorderlyroutineofhomelife.Well,itis importanttorememberthatthesecircumstancesarelikelytolastforthe durationofthewarandthatthewar islikelytoendurethroughthepreciousyearsofaboy'sgrowth.SoI feelitismydutytoaskparentstobe' vigilantandseethattheirboysare notallowedtoslackeninobedience anddutifulness.Inparticular,Iwould urgeuponthemtheneedofgiving loyalsupporttotheschool'seffortto traintheboysinthespiritofobedienceanddiscipline.Noonecanblame childrenorevenadolescentboysfor findingdisciplineirksome,butsensible parentswillnotencourageanyevasion ofit.Boyshaveplentyofgoodwill, buttheyneedthefirmguidanceof adultwisdom.Now,intheordinary ProvidenceofGodaboyneedsthe firm,ifkindly,guidanceofhisfather, andthereisneedforspecialvigilance wherethefather'scontrolislacking; butthereisnoreasonwhyamother whohastofacetheresponsibility aloneshoulddespair;forthereisa specialProvidenceofGodthatwill supplyallthatiswantingtoher,providedsheisreadytodoherbestto facethedoubletask.HereImust thanktheparentsforthesupportthey havegiventotheschool;while..Iam alwayswillingtoheartheirviewson allthatconcernstheirboys,Iam gratefulforthefactthattheyareslow toencouragechildishcomplaintsand reluctanttogivetheirsupporttothe verypardonabledesireofyouthtodeviseexcusesforescapingthepressure oftheschool'sdiscipline.

appointedtofindthatmanyboysapparentlydonotreceivemuchencouragementathometoadoptthepractice. IthinkIoughttoexplain, then, that thepracticeisonewhichhas, under God'sprovidence, beenspreadthrough theworldverylargelythroughtheinstrumentalityoftheJesuitFathers. It oughtthentotakealargepartinthe lifeofaboywhoisunderthespiritual directionoftheSocietyofJesus.I mustexplain, too, thatIunderstand thatinsomecasesgoingtochurchon aFirstFridaymorningwillmakeit impossibleforaboytogettoschool atthenormaltimeandthatIleaveit tothemtogetthereassoonasthey reasonablycan, nordoIrequireawrittennoteofexplanationfromtheirparepts. However, whileIshouldlike toseetheboysgoingtoconsiderable troubleinordertobefaithfultothis practice,ImustmakeitclearthatI donotwishthepracticetobeinany senseobligatory.

Anyonewhohashadexperienceof tryingtofosterintellectualactivity willunderstandwhy, despitethesomewhatsmallattendance,Ihavehad reasontobeextremelypleasedwith theDebatingSociety.Therangeof subjectsdiscussed,thestandardofdebatereached,and-inviewofthenumbersinthetwoseniorclasses-theattendanceitselfwasgood.Thisyear thesocietyextendeditsactivitybyhavingadebatewithanotherschool, and theyearwasconcludedwithaformal "dinner,"whichprovedveryenjoyable, despitetheinformalityofthemenu. IhopebothboysandparentswillcontinuetogivetheDebatingSocietythe supportthatitdeserves, andthatas theboysofthelargerclassesgroiw oldertheywilltaketheirfullpartin itsactivities.

Anyonewhothinksouttheimplicationsofthisschemewillseethatitis designedtopreventaboyfromreachingthemoredifficultsecondarywork untilheishalfwaythroughhis'teens. IntheSeniorSchool,Drawingand Geographyhavebeenaddedtothe curriculum.,Ithinktheextensionof Geographyintotheearlyyearsofthe Seniorcoursewillproveadvantageoustoall,whilethoseboyswhoare foundtohavenogiftforlanguages twillhavelaidafoundationwhichwill enablethemtotakeGeographyasan alternativesubjectintheJuniorCertificateExamination.Drawing,too,is primarilyintendedforthosewhoare notcompetentinlanguages,though proficiency,inthesubjectislikelyto beofservicetoanyboywhoissubsequentlytotakeupengineeringorany similarcareer.

Inspeakingoftheformationofthe boys,Ishouldnotliketogivetheimpressionthatitwastheschool'sambitionoryourstoformtheboysinto "goodcitizens"whomerelyescapethe condemnationoftheirfellowmenand keepwithinthelimitsofthecivillaw. Fromtimetotimeparentshaveaskedmyadviceastowhattheycando tohelptheirboys.Naturally,my advicewillvarywiththeboysconcerned, butthereisonethingthatIshould liketourgeonallparents, andthat isthepracticeofgoingtotheSacramentsoftenwiththeirsons. The primaryeffectoftheSacramentofthe EucharististounitetheChristianto Christbygivingtohissoulanincrease insanctifyinggraceandtogivetothat soulallthespiritualfooditneeds. HereIshouldliketocallattention toapracticeIammostanxioustofosteramongtheboys.Irefertothe practiceofgoingtoHolyCommunion ontheFirstFridayofeachmonth.I knowperfectlywellthatitisquiteimpossibleforsomeboystogotochurch onthatday;Ihavereason, too, for gratificationinthefactthatanumber ofboysareregularinobservingthe FirstFridays, butImusttellyou franklythatIhavebeensomewhatdie-
