HOWTHEALBANY EXPEDITIONBEGANAND FAILED

OneofthefirstattemptstoevangelisetheAustraliannativeswasdueto thezealofDr.Brady,thefirstBishopofPerth.Justonacenturyago, January6,1846,therearrivedinPerth themostnumerousmissionarystaff thathaduptothenlandedinAustralia. BesidestheBishoptherewereseven priests,onlyoneofthem,FatherPowell,fromIreland,theothersbeingItalianandFrench;therewasonesubdeacon,twoBenedictinenovices,two lay-brothersoftheCongregationofthe SacredHeartofMary,eightIrishcatechists,andsixSistersofMercyfrom theConventofSt.Leo,inCarlow,with onenovicefromthesamecommunity.

Theeffortwasmagnificent,butwas farbeyondeCatholiccommunityto support. enthreeyearslatera censusofteSwanRiversettlement showedonly306Catholics.Ofthe party,theBishopandFatherPowell remainedinPerth;theotherpriests weresoonwidelyscattered.Forthe momentIamconcernedwiththefortunesofFatherAngeloConfalonieriand thelittlebandofLibermannmissioners.In1846,inviewofthefactthat amilitarystationhadbeenestablished atPortEssington,inNorthernAustralia,Dr.Serra,oneoftheSpanishBenedictines,broughtoutbyDr.Brady, 'wasappointedfirstBishopofPortVictoria.Theappointmentwaspremature, forthesettlementdisappearedentirely withinafewyears.To-dayitis memorableprincipallybecauseitwas thefinishingpointofLeichhardt'sfamousexpeditionfromBrisbane.

Wecanto-dayestimatethecourage ofFatherConfalonieri,who,accompaniedbytwoIrishcatechists,James FaganandNicholasHogan,setoutfor PortEssingtonafewdaysafterhisarrivalinPerth.HeproceededtoSydney,wherehefoundashipgoingto thelonelynorthernoutpost.InTorresStraittheshipwaswrecked,and allonboardwerelostexceptthecaptainandthezealousItalianmissioner. FatherConfalonierieventuallyreached PortEssington,andbeganhismission totheblacks,overfourhundredof whomwereconverted.Itisdifficult forustorealiseto-day'theconditions underwhichthelonelypriestlaboured inthelandwherenowthousandsof AustraliansandAmericansoldiersare 1

Afterafewdaysinthecomparative comfortofthelittleportthebrave Frenchmissionersmadetheirwayinto theheartoftheheavilytimberedcoon trynorthofAlbany.Inthatwilder ness,latertoresoundwiththebuzzof thesawsofMillar'sKarriandJarrah ForestsCompany,thelittlepartypitchedcampbesideLakeMatilda.They builtasbesttheycouldtwowretched huts,oneofwhichservedforachapel. Therewerefewnativesinthedistrict, andthesefewseldomremainedmore thanaweekortwointhesameplace. Thepoormissionersknewnothingof thetendencyofourblackstogo"walkabout,"andalltheireffortstoevangel isethenomadsweremadeinvain.So longasthemissionhadsomeflourto distributeafewblackswouldpayan occasionalvisit,butwhenthefoodsupplyvanishedsodidthenatives.The missionerslivedasbesttheycouldby shootingducksandkangaroos,which wereplentifulenough,butafterthree monthsofthisprecariousexistence, thetwopriestsandtwobrothers,will theirclothinginrags-theyhadmade cassocksfromthefewsheetstheyhad broughtwiththem-madetheirway backtoAlbany.

HemeantthatabelieverinChrist's religionhasgoodreasontobelievethatbelieversarereasonablepeople, andthatreasonablepeople,giventhe opportunity,oughttobebelievers. Thisisuniversallytrue-forthelearnedchurchmanandfortheunlettered peasant;fortheuniversitymanand slorthelabourer.Thetheologianand thepeasantandtheuniversitymanand thelabourerallbelievethesamethings -thatis,iftheyareallCatholicsAndallhaveequalcausetoconsider theirbeliefanintelligentandreasonablesubmission.Truethetheologian willprobablyknowreallyconvincing proofsforeveryindividualtruthwhich liebelieves,whereasthelabourermay not;butthelabourer,too,hasasheet anchorforhisfaith,abasisbyrecoursetowhichhecansolveallhis questions.Thisbasisishisconviction thattheChurchofChristhasinfallible teachingauthority.Thisis,inour opinion,thetrulygreatadvantagethat theCatholichasoverthesincereProtestant.TheProtestant,sinceallreligioustruthshavebeendeniedbysomeme,mayoftenfeelintellectuallycompelledtodoubteverythinguntilhehas satisfiedhimselfoneachindividual pointandprovedittohisownreasonAblesatisfaction.Hewouldneeda thoroughknowledgeofLatin,Greek IndHebrew-asmatteringofeach wouldnotdo-topursue,hisstudiesof theScriptures.Withoutthisstudyhe couldnotbesureofthefoundations -menofhisreligion-thatChristever .xistedatall-thatHereallytaughta 'Ioctrine,andthatthatdoctrineisactuallyaccessibleto-dayHewould havetostudythephilosophicalsystemsofPlatoandAristotleuponwhose synthesestherationalbasesofChristiantheologyhavebeenworkedout. toBiblecommentatorsandothersessionsontheair,thatindividualtexts ofScripturecan,apparently,befound cobackuppracticallyanyformof opinion,andeventhatthesametext canquitehonestlyandsincerelybe twistedintovariousdifferentbutplausibleinterpretations.Itshouldalso occurtothesamelistenersthatChrist cametoteachthetruthtotheworld, andthatifHewaswhatHeclaimedto be,andiswhatwebelieveHimtobe, thensurelyHemusthavegiventhe worldadequatemeansofknowingwhat thatteachingofHisis.Isitnotclear enough,then,thattheBiblealonecannotbetheonlyruleofanyone'sfaith; forhowcanamantakeforgranted thathisownparticular,privateinter. pretationistherightoneintheface ofsomanyotherpeople'sdifferentrenderings,unlessheimpudentlyandAresumptuouslyconsiderseveryoneelsea fooloraknaveorboth?

Nowhereistheneedofauthoritative interpretationmoreevidentthaninthe subjectoftheSacredScriptures-no doubtbecausenopartoftheChristian heritageisnoblerormoreimportant thantheScriptures.

ItsurelyfollowsthatChristmust haveleftsomebodycapableofgivingan authoritativeinterpretationofanypossiblepointofdisputeconcerningHis doctrine,otherwiseHewouldhave comenottobringorderandlight,but disorderandconfusion,andChrist wouldHimselfberesponsibleforthe lamentabledisunitywhichexists amongChristiansto-day-DidChrist leavethisAuthority?Hemusthave, weanswer,andifitwasnecessaryHe didit.Yes,butdidHeleavethis Authority?Well,HesaidtoHisApostles,uponwhomHewasfoundingHis Church(thecongregationofbelievers inHim):"Teachallnations,andbeholdIamwithyoualldaysevento theendoftheworld."Hesaidto them:"HewhohearsvonhearsMe, andhewhodespisesyoudespisesMe." Hesaidtothem,"Whatsoeveryou shallbinduponearthshallbebound alsoinHeaven,and'whatsoeveryou looseuponearthshallbeloosedalso inHeaven." lifthiswasnotgiving thempowertointerpretHisteaching inthefaceofanydifficulty,whatwas it?Ifthiswasnottheauthorityto

Letustake,forexample,thosesimplewordsofChristatHisLastSupper;whenwithbreadinHishandsHe said:"ThisisMyBody."TheCatholicChurchteaches,andhasalways taught,thatChristmeantexactlywhat Hesaid,andthatwhichhadbeen breadwasnowHisBody.Luther taughtthatthesubstanceofbreadwas stillthere,butthesubstanceofChrist's Bodywastheretoo.Calvintaught thatChrist'sbodywasreallynotthere atall,andthatthebreadwasonlya symbolofChrist'sBody,butthatthose whoreceivedthebreadwithfaith would,asitwere,bereceivingChrist's Bodybecauseofthatfaith.

By1577,lessthan60yearsafterthe authorityoftheChurchhadbeenrejectedbytheProtestantsofNorthern Europe,asmallbookwaspublished showing200differentinterpretations whichhadbythenbeenappliedby varioushereticstothosesimplewords: "ThisisMyBody."JesusChrist meantthatthesubstancewhichHewas holdinginHishandseitherwasorwas notHisBody.Itisobviousthat mencannotbeagreedwhatHedid mean.ThereforeeitherChristwished ustogropeaboutinthegreatestconfusionorelseHeleftanauthority whichwasempoweredtosolvethis questionandotherslikeit.Apartaltogetherfrompositiveproofs'whichcan bebroughtforward,whichseemsthe morelikely?

Toconcludethen;Catholicsare unanimousandunitedonallquestions oftheirfaith,becausetheyadmitand believeintheauthorityoftheChurch tosolvethosequestionswhichthey areunabletosolvethemselves.NonCatholicsareseparatedfromus,and disunitedamongthemselves,precisely becausetheyhaveenthronedhuman fallibilityandindividualprivatejudgmentintheplaceofthatdivinetribunalwhichChristsetupinHis ChurchwhenHesaid:"Hewhohears youhearsMe,andhewhodespisesyou despisesMe."Onceagainhasbeenjustifiedtheoldproverb:"Quotcapitatot sententiae''-"Thereareasmanyopinionsasthereareheads."Isit,then, intoleranceandbigotrywhichcompels theCatholicChurchtoinsistthatreunionisonlypossiblewhenthosewho haveabandonedthedivinesourceof unwaveringfaithfortheconfusingand divergentstreamsofprivatejudgment,returntothatsourcewherethey willfindtheonefoldundertheone shepherd'

Sohebegantosaythatsuchthings werenonsenseandcouldnothappen toChrist;lookatallthemiraclesHe hadwrought!Christ,veryfirmlyand withoutmincingmatters,toldhimto shutupandnottotalkaboutmatters aboutwhichhehadnoknowledge. This,wasalongtimebeforethepowers oftheprimacywereconferredon Peter,andinanycasethePrimacywas notconferredonPeterbecausehewas perfect-thatissufficientlyobviousto anyonereadingtheNewTestament.

Excessinreligioniscalledsuperstition,anddespiteeducation,themodernworldisfullofit.Superstition impliessomethingsuperfluouswhichis addedtoreligiousworship.Generally thisappliestoallreligionsoutsidethe CatholicChurch.Butwithinthe Churcheventhereisarecurringtendencyforextraneouselementstoappearinworship.Ifthesearemerely theresultofthoughtlessnessorignorance,andiftheydonotgreatlyadulteratethepurityordestroytheuniformityofworship,theywouldnormallybeveniallysinful.Formsof minorsuperstitionfoundamongCatholicsarewhenoneattachesinfallible efficacytosomedevotionalpractice, withouthavinganyrealgroundfor doingso.Thisapplies,forinstance, tothewearingofmedalsandscapulars asthoughHeavenmustthereforegrant favours,ortothepracticeoftheNine FirstFridays,inthehopeinfalliblyof beingsaveddespiteneglectofotherreligiousobligations.Piousobjectsof devotionoractsarenottoberegarded asmagicspells.Suchformsofsuper-litionare,however,notcommon amongCatholics.Butasurprising numberofotherwiseeducatedpeople clingtosuchsuperstitionsastheunluckinessofthenumber13,ofFridays, andofwalkingunderladders.More seriousisthebeliefinandconsultation ofspiritualisticseances,andthemessagesofPlanchetteboards,andother effortstopeerintothefuture.Consultationswithfortune-tellers,cupreadingandcard-cuttingforascertainingthefutureofabsolutelyhidden things,willoftenfallshortofmortal sinthroughnotbeingtakenseriously. Someofthesepractices,inseekingto pryintosecretswhichGodinHiswise andlovingProvidencedoesnotwish themtopenetrate,virtuallyinvoke Satanicaid.Andwhethertherebe devilryinthemornot,thereisstill harmtodabblersinthese"arts"and injurytosoul,mindandbodynotinfrequentlyresults.ThepersonofnormalbalanceandstrongFaithwillgive theseweirdandsillypracticesawide berth.

Therealgravityofbreachesofthe FirstCommandment,however,relate tosinsofsacrilege.Weneednotdelayindiscussingidolatryinthestrict senseoftheworshipofidols,creatures oremblemsintheplaceofGod.All sinindeedisfigurativeidolatry,forit amountstothechoiceofselforofsome othercreatureaboveGod.Butinthis senseitdoesnotfallspecificallyunder theFirstCommandment,butwillbe treatedofundertheotherCommandmentsaccordinglyasitoccurs.

Sacrilegeisasinbywhichsomesacredthing,person,place,orriteisirreverentlyviolatedorprofaned.God isaffrontedintheirreverenttreatment ofwhatisspeciallydedicatedtoHis worship.ThemostsinfultypeofsacrilegerelatestoabuseoftheSacraments,inreceivingthemunworthilyor invalidly.Thus,makingabadConfession,marryingoutsidetheChurch,or receivingHolyCommunionwhenina stateofmortalsin,constitutevery gravesinsandifdoneoutofmaliceor contemptforreligioncarrytheadditionalguiltofblasphemy.

Similarlyirreverencetothesacred vessels,relics,images,altarsandthe Scriptureswouldbegrievouslysinful ifdonethroughcontempt.Ill-treat-

nientresultingfromaccidentconstitutesnosinatall,aswheretheSacred Hostfallstotheground.Property ormoneysetasideforecclesiastical purposesisnotinitselfasacredthing, buttherightoftheChurchtoitis sacred,thencemisappropriationor stealinginvolvessacrilegeaswellas theft.Thesameappliestorobbing poor-boxesorcollectionplates.

TheFirstCommandmentalsoforbidsdoingviolencetoallecclesiastical personswhatever,andtothoseunder religiousvows.Itisalsosacrilegeto bringecclesiasticsbeforecivilcourtsof justiceincaseswhichtheChurchhas reservedecclesiastialcourts.

Otherpracticeswhichbreachthis Commandmentarethetemptingof God,forexample,bythosewhoin graveillnessrefusemedicalhelp,expectingGodtohealthem;thosewho wilfullyandneedlesslyrunintosome greatdangerfromwhichnothingbuta miraclecansavethem.Likewisetraffickinginspiritualthings(simony). Thecommonestformofthisabuseis thesellingofpiousobjectsalready blessed.

Unfortunatelyourgeographicaland culturalisolationinthisStateisgiving risetoakindofopen-mouthed,uncriticalenthusiasmwhichwasliberally extendedto"MissiontoMoscow"by pressandradio,andevenbysuchdignitariesastheLieutenant-Governor, thePremier,andthePrimeMinister's wife.

Thereisnodoubtwhateverthatthe filmisanexampleoftheworsttype ofpropaganda-falseandadistortion offacts.Why,then,shoulditbe shown Thisisaquestionthatwe havearighttoask,anditdemands ananswer. Mischievousandelse.

Whyshouldamischievousandfalse film,widelycondemnedas"phonypropaganda,"betletloosetopervertthe mindsofgreatmassesofpeoplewho arenotacquaintedwiththefacts?

Firstly,onmyownbehalf,andon behalfofthisdistinguishedgathering, mayIextendaveryheartyandsincerewelcometoHisGrace,MostReverendRedmondPrendiville,D.D.,ArchbishopofPerth,to"Aquinas"to-night. Wedoappreciatethehonourthathis Gracehasconferredonusbyhispresencehereto-night,'anddesiretothank himforhisfurtherinterestinour work.

WehaveallobservedthatHis Grace'sheartfeltinterestinyouthis oneofhismanyoutstandingcharacteristics.Hence,wefeelthathiscorningto-nightispromptednotmerely fromasenseofdutybuturgedby greattendernessofheartwhichisinstinctiveinhim.

Wecontinuetowitnessnowforthe fourthyearourChristianheritageand geniustornasunderbyconflictsand convisedbythecatacylsmofwar; bruteforceenthronedasthesoleprinciplegoverningthedestiniesofmany peoples,andinternationalperjuryrecognisedasthediplomaticprocedure.

Midstthiswelterofdespotismand tyrannicaldebasement,wewitnessthe mostflagrantabusesnowdefyingthe noblefunctionandpurposeofChristianEducation.

TheSovietledthewayinexploiting theinstinctsofthesensesbyadespoticcontrolofalltheinstruments thatservetocreatepopularopinion. TheNaziGovernmenthasconsistently andrelentlesslypursueditsdeterminationtocastoutallreligiouseducation fromtheThirdReichthatitmaysubjugateeducationcompletelytothe ideologyofNationalSocialism.

Butwhilewedeploreinothersthe perversityofintentionthathasled tosuchevils,maywenotturnour thoughtsonourselves,andrealisethat perhapsunconsciouslyweareorientatingtheaimsofoureducationalsystem toanendequallyaspernicious.

Iconsiderthatwe-citizensofafree democracy-cannotbutfeeldeeplyapprehensivewhen'weconsiderthatthere isgrowingamongstusasystemofeducationinwhichthephilosophyand techniqueofinstructionareopento severecriticismfromthestandpointof thosewhoupholdtheprinciplesof Christianeducation

Thisphilosophytreatswithdisdain therichheritageandexperiencesofthe past,andwouldhaveusconcentrate ourenergiesandattentionsolelyupon theimmediateproblemsofschoolage, oronthosewhichwillconfronttheindividualintheenvironmentofhispostschoolage.

Thebasicphilosophyofthissystem completelydisregardsthesupernatural orderandthespiritualelementinman.

Asregardsthetechniqueofinstruction,everymechanicaldevicethatcan bemadetoservethechildshouldhe

usedinhiseducation,andtothisend, theradioandthecinemahavebeen installedaseducationalessets.

Butnomechanicaldevice,however useful,canbeasubstituteforthepersonalcontactoftheenthusiasticteacher,andtheintimateimpactofhismind uponthatofhispupils.

Masseducatedyouthswillprovide materialforunscrupulousdemagogues, fortheyaresoeasilystampededinto andinfectedwithhysteritbythecleveruseofpropaganda.

Ithinkthatthosewhocontrolthe destiniesofeducationinAustralia shouldcarefullyscrutinisethephilosophyofeducationthatunderliesany radicalchangesinmethodsofinstruction.Furthermore,theyshouldbe welladvisedtoresistthesuggestion thatthesolepurposeofmoderneducationistoadaptthechildtotheactualsocialconditionsofourtime.Man shouldcertainlybepreparedtoface theconditionsofactuallifeandgain hislivelihoodamidstthem,buthis educationshouldnotfetterhimto theseconditions.

TheidealofChristianeducationfor whichthisCollegestandsistoembrace thewholeman:Body,soulandspirit. Itsendisnotonlyanaturalone-the acquisitionofknowledge,theformationofmentalhabits;itisalsosupernatural-theachievementofeternal happinesswithGod.

Itisgratifyingtoreportonamost satisfactoryandedifyingspiritofpiety andreligiousobservancethroughout theCollege.

IampleasedtohearexcellentreportsfromourJuniorSeminary,St. Charles',Guildford.Althoughourrepresentationissmall,yetIhopeto readinfuturereportsthat"Aquinas" isdoingitspartmorenoblytomaintainthenumberofthosewho,seeking "thepearlofgreatprice"intheform oftheirpriestlyvocation,havelearnedtodespisetheemptyandfleeting joysthatperishwithtime.

TheRedemptoristFathersprovided uswithaspiritualdirector,inthe personofRev.FatherWallace,forthe boys'enclosedretreatthisyear.We begtoacknowledgeourindebtedness totheRetreatMasterforhisunremittingcareandpriestlyzealinthemanagementofthereligiousexercisesduringtheRetreat.

Ourboysareencouragedtobecome membersoftheHolyNameSociety, theConferenceofSt.VincentdePaul, thePropagationoftheFaith,andthe HolyChildhood,allofwhicharemost flourishingassociationswithintheCollege.

IwishtorecordwithgratefulacknowledgementourbestthankstoHis GracetheArchbishop,forhissympatheticencouragementinourspiritual necessitiesandforhispracticalinter-

estatalltimesshowninourCollege activities.Weacknowledgewithsincerethanksourappreciationofthee spiritualministrationsextendedtothe boysbyourChaplain,Rev.James Fanning,alsobyRev.FathersF. O'ConnorandJ.O'Mahony,whohave sogenerouslyandkindlyco-operated withusinattendingtotheboys' spiritualrequirementsthroughoutthe year. Ourroll-callofboardersandexternal studentshasgonebeyondallexpectationsthisyear.Ourwaitinglistis anextremelyheavyone,andIregret toannouncethatveryfewextrareservationswillbepossiblefor1944.We thankyousincerelyfortheconfidence withwhichyouviewtheefficiencyof ourtrainingandmanagementofyour boys.

TheHeadPrefectandCollegeCaptainfortheyearisTerenceBourke, whohaswellmaintainedthedignity andhonourthatsuchapositionentails,bothbyhispersonalobservance andbyhisdirectivedischargeofduty. ilewasablyassistedbyPeterBanting (vice-captain),JohnWalsh,BasilRigg, RobertTrend,PeterDurack,AlecHarrold,BrianMaloney,PeterHall,John Dease,whoactedinthecapacityofassistantprefects.

OurHeadPrefectisalsoDuxofthe College.ThisisTerry'ssecondsuccessiveclaimtothecovetedtitle,and addsonemoredistinctiontohisoutstandingcareerasheadofhisrespectiveclassessincehisadventtoAquinasr in1938.

Theexaminationresultsof1942were mostoutstandingbothinnumberof passesandinqualityobtained.

IntheLeavingCertificateExamination,twenty-two(221completepasses withthirty-two(32)distinctionswere obtained.

Uponanalysingtheresultsitwillbe observedthatourdistinctionlistcoveredquiteanextensiverangeofsubjects,includingEnglish,French,Latin, Mathematics(pureandapplied),History,Physics,ChemistryandDrawing.

OurbestpasswasthatofPaulHanrahan,whoobtainedsevensubjects withsix(6)distinctions.Thiswasthe mostbrilliantpassintheState,andfor thethirdsuccessiveyearcameourway. HewasawardedtheUniversityExhibitionforLanguages(LatinandEnglish),andisnowtakinganArtsCourse attheUniversity,whereheismeeting withasimilarmeasureofsuccess.

Otheroutstandingpasseswerethose ofJohnO'Neill,four(4)distinctions; JohnAhern,PeterDurack,andKevin Merchant.three(3)distinctionseach.

IntheJuniorCertificateExaminations,therewerethirty-four(34)completepasses,six(6)partialandfour (4)completedpasses.

Themagnificentwareffortofthe French-Canadians,90percent.ofwhom areCatholics,'wasrevealedbyMr.LorenzoPare,amemberoftheCanadian PressDelegationnowvisitingPerth.

Mr.PareisParliamentarycorrespondentinOttawaof"L'ActionCatholique,"aQuebecdailynewspaper,and onthepresenttourisrepresentingall FrenchlanguagenewspapersinCanada.

"TheProvinceofQuebecisnowproducing50percent.ofCanada'swar supplies,"hesaid,"andduringtherecentVictoryLoancampaign,thefirst fourcitiestoover-subscribetheirquota wereinQuebec."

ThisenthusiasmoftheFrenchCanadiansheattributedmainlytothelead giventhembytheCatholicHierarchy, notablyhisEminenceCardinalVilleneuve,ArchbishopofQuebec,and PrimateofCanada. PopulationGrowth.

WhenEnglandtookCanadafrom theFrench,saidMr.Paretherewere about60,000French-Canadians.Their numbershadnowgrownto3,500,000one-thirdofthetotalpopulation.

Thisamazingincreaseheattributed tothemannerinwhichfamilylifehad beensafeguardedunderthebeneficent influenceoftheChurch.

LargefamilieswerecommoninQuebec,andhebelievedthiswasdueto thefactthattheGovernmenthad steadfastlysetitsfaceagainsttheintroductionofbirthcontrolfacilitiesand propaganda.

"Anewproblemisnowfacingus," hesaid."Thedemandsofwarindustriesarebringingmoreandmorecountrypeopletothecities,andinCanada, asineveryothercountry,ithasbeen foundthattheatmosphereinthecity isnotfavourableforrearinglargefamilies.

"Inthegreatfarmhouses,families oftenchildrenandmorearecommon; incongestedcityareas,oneortwois theusualthing"

Mr.ParesaidthatFrench-Canadians, theirtraditions,theirpolitics,andtheir outlookoninternationalaffairshad beengrosslymisrepresented.

Someirresponsiblestatementsby membersofminoritygroupshadbeen seizeduponbyAmericanandoverseas papers,andhadbeenpublishedasthe viewsofallFrench-Canadians.

Actuallyhesaid,therewasafundamentalunitybetweentheEnglishand theFrenche-Canadians.Bothwere wholeheartedlydevotedtoCanada,and weredeterminedtopreserveCanadian independenceandintegrity. ChurchillPopular.

SuggestionsofaunionofCanadaand theUnitedStatesbedismissedashighlyimprobable.

Mr.ParecoveredtheChurchill-RooseveltConferenceatOttawaforhispaper, anddeclaredthattheBritishPrime Ministerhadcapturedtheheartsofthe French-Canadians.

"Fortwoweeks,"hesaid,"norealinformationcameoutofthemeeting, whichhadarousedsuchinterest.My peoplelovepublicdemonstrations,and yettheyhadnotevencaughtaglimpse ofthetwoleaders,orreadonewordof worth-whilenewsaboutthemeeting.

"Oneday,however,anannouncewasmadeovertheradiothatMr. Churchillwoulddrivethroughthecity inhalf-an-hour'stime.Peopleappearedasifbymagic,andthestreetswere throngedwhenthePrimeMinisterbeganhistourofthecity. Australia,Too.

Itisalsourgedthatspecialprayersbeofferedbyparentsandchildrenintheirchurches,homes,andschoolstobegofGodprotectionandstrengthofourdefenders,thehealingofthediscordbetweennations,andtheblessingofalastingpeacefoundedonJusticeandCharity.Thisisthestrangeanomalyofthepresentconflictthatineverynationthecommonpeoplelongintheirhearts forpeacewhiletheythemselvesmustsuffermosthorriblyfrom therigoursofwar.Whennowallhumanefforthasfailed,and thereseemsonlytheprospectofalongexhaustingwarofattrition,weturnatthebehestofourtemporalandspiritualrulersto GodthroughtheintercessionofMaryastoourlastandonlyrecourse.WhatisthispeacethatthenationsseekofGodandwhich inabewilderingwaytheyclaimwillbebroughtaboutthroughthe strengththatGodgivestotheirrespectivearms?Ideally,itis thatmoralconditionwhichresultsfromthecompleteharmonyof humanwills,theharmonywhichitselfisduetopracticalidentity ofviewsandissues.Asweregardtheworldto-day.suchpeace isclearlyunattainable.

However,suchidyllicharmony,wereitpossible,wouldnot necessarilybeagoodthingforthecontentionofwillsisnotnecessarilyevil.Acertainamountandqualityofoppositionappears necessaryasastimulustoeffortandtothecallingforthofthefull energiesofthehumancharacter.ThisisbestseenInthespiritual lifewheretheabsenceoftemptationwouldmakefordebilitatedanduncertainhabitsofvirtue.Hence,thepeacethatChrist cameonearthtoestablish,andthatwhichHealoneatanytime cangrant,isthatwhichresultsalonefromtheobservanceofjustice.Hencewehaveapositivenotionofpeace,onewhichsprings notfromcowardiceoracquiescenceinevil,butfromcontention whichhasasitsobjectthetriumphofjustice.CatholicismrecognisesnopeacethatitnotfoundedinjusticeandtheChurchadequatelysetsforthwhatjusticeinvolves,distinguishingbetween thevaluesofvariousrightsanddutieswhichbindnotonlythe individualbutthefamily,thenation,andtheintercoursebetween nations.Thatthereiswarto-dayindicatesnotthefailureof Christianitybuttheatheismandapostasyofnationswhichhave permittedarrogantnationalismandfaithinbruteforcetooverridetheuniversalmorallaw.

Peace,then,meansinfinitelymorethanthemerecessationof hostilities,andcertainlymorethanthehollowterm"victory"impliesinthemindsofmany.TheHolyFatherlabouredunder noillusionaboutthefuturepeaceoftheworldwhenstatinghisfive celebratedPeacePoints.Hedeclared,"Weareoverwhelmedwith thethoughtoftheimmenselabourwhichwillbenecessarywhen theworldhastiredofwarandturnstothoughtsofpeaceinorder tobreakdownthegiganticwallsofhatredandhostilitywhich havebeenbuiltupintheheatoftheconflict."Proceeding,the Popepointsoutthatthebestandmostfar-seeingplanswillbe foredoomedtofailureunlessthepeopleandthosewhogovern them"developthatsenseofdeepandkeenresponsibilitywhich measuresandweighshumanstatutesaccordingtothesacredand inviolablestandardsofthelawofGod."Itwouldobviouslybea mostdastardlyhypocrisytoturntoGodin,anhourofcrisisasking apeaceofHimwhichwouldnotbefoundedonHislaw,butona continuanceoftheoldpagansecularismwhichhashithertorigidly excludedHimfromthecouncilsofthenations.Thesewouldbe mealy-mouthedprayersavailingnotforpeaceandsalvation.but onlyforadoubly-dyedcynicismanddamnation.Letusthen praytoGodtofilluswiththathungerandthirstforjusticewhich wasproclaimedbyChristasabeatitude,andwhichpresupposesas itsnaturalfoundationthemoralvirtueofjustice.Letusalso praytoheguidedbythatuniversallovewhichisthecompendium andmostgeneralexpressionoftheChristianideal.Foritisonly fromthemarriageofjusticeandcharitythattherecanbeissueof thatdeeplydesiredpeaceofChristsurpassingallunderstanding. whichtheworldcanneithergivenortakeaway.

Once'again,onSaturday,November27,thebustleandexcitementof theannualentertainmentbrokeinto thedailyroutineofthepupilsofBoys' College,Mary'sMount.Onthatday highspiritscouldnolongerrestrain themselves,when,afterweeksofintensepreparation,theclimaxwasreached.At7.30p.m.twobusesarrivedto carryawaythelivelyartiststoKalamundaHall.Hereforthespaceof21 hourstheyouthfulperformancesofaccomplishedactorswhollyengagedthe raptattentionofparentsandfriends, who,fortheoccasion,hadtravelled fromfarandnear.Someevensacrificedpersonalcomfortbythronging doorways,andeveryavailableopening dfthealreadycrowdedbuilding,where theybecameimmersedinanatmosphereofforgottencaresandworries.
