Thegood,then,thatcancome,yet maynotcome,fromCommunismis theconviction,especiallyamongstCatholics,that"ifanymanwillnotwork, neitherlethimeat."

ButthisscienceoftheGreekpagan philosopherswaslittlebetterthana science.Inotherwords,itwasa thoughtifnotaconvictionwhenit oughttohavebeenalife.
Communistsaredetermindthatthis socialsciencewhichgivesusthedoctrineofgeneraljusticeshallbealife, evenifitcostsuntolddeaths.Individualsandwholeclassesofindividuals whoarenotofservicetothegroup mustbeeliminated.Alas!theWorld War1,withitsvictorythatcost10 milliondeaths,hassuggestedtoenthusiastsofsocialpeacetheruthlessnessofwar.

OnlytheCatholicChurchstandsbetweenthemodernworldandveryeffectiveslavery;becauseonlytheCatholicChurchwithitsdoctrineoffreewill andRedemptioncanlookonworkand servicenotjustasadutytotheState, butasthewillandexampleofaselfsacrificingGod.

ThereasonablenessoftheChurch's teachingonsuchaquestionasthe smallunitinbusinessisbecomingmore apparent,thoughImustadmitthat thepracticaldifficultiesinthewayare verygreat.Butthetheoreticaldifficultiesaredisappearing.Theadmirationforthelargeunitisaformof spiritualvenerationlikethevenerationofaverysmallboyforaverybig water-melon.
Take,bywayofillustration,thestock argumentthatweshouldbaskinthe efficiencyofmass-productionandin theeverlastingsunlightoftheLeisure State.Now,ofcourse,thereisnot theslightestevidencethatinthepast large-scaleproduction,orthefactory system,havebroughtusnearertothis idylliccondition,butthebourgeois mind,liketheboyontheburningdeck, isnotalwaysparticularlybright.But itshouldatleastbeevidentthatno matterwhatthepast,wearenotmakingmuchheadwayto-daytowardsthe leisure-stateIgrantthatmanisoverrworkedandthatmorereasonableworking-hoursshouldbeachieved;butit wastheindustrialrevolutionthat broughtinexcessiveworking-hours. Anditisextremelyunlikelythatthe problemofunemploymentwillbeovercomebyshorteninghours:rather,attentionwillbegiventotheproduction ofnewgoodsandservicesparticularly asincome-levelsrise.Theleisure-state maybeoverthehorizon,butthehorizonisnotcominganynearer.Inany a,eIthinkamanwouldratherwork tenhoursadayinhisowntimethan sixhoursofsomebodyelse's.He wolldratherfeelfreetotakehisown siestaeachdaythanbegrantedanextrafortnight'sholidayattheendof theyear.
B'utwhyinthenameofallthatis powerfulshouldthisbeanargument forlarge-scaleproduction.Ifthe smallunitisasefficientasthelarge one,orcanhemadeso,asundoubtedlyitcaninasurprisingnumberofinstances,theniftheworldwantsmore leisureitcanhaveitwithsmallunits aswellaswithlarge.Thefreeman cantakehisleisureashewills.Ifind thatthisargumentconvincedpeople whousuallyworshipunthinkinglyat theshrineofthebigfactoryorshop. Thereseemstobenoneedtoadduce thefurtherphilosophicargumentthat onlyafreemancanmakethebestuse ofhisleisure,orthatcreativeactivity inworkisinitselfasdesirableas morespare-timetoreadthelatest novels.
But,eveniftherestorationofpropertymeantadeclineinlivingstandards,itmuststillberestoredbecause itmeetsafundamentalneedofman. Man'sspiritualandsocialneedstake precedenceoverhiseconomicneeds.On thispointthereisnobetterauthority thanPiusXI,whowrote:"Goodsare producedmoreefficientlybyasuitable distributionoflabourthanbyscattered

Ihavereferredbeforetosemi-detachedhouses,yetwefindthemadvocated, particularlyintheEasternStates,as thesolutionoftheslums.Theyare supposedtobealittlecheaper,butactuallyinmanycasestheydonotpossesseventhatdoubtfulblessing.BeforelongIexpectthesocialreformer willbeputtingforwardtheideaofa communalkitchenforeachpairofsemidetachedhousesintheinterestsofthe movementformoreleisureforwives andtopromoteafinenewspiritof neighbourliness.
Athirdproposaliscommunalfarminginthedairyingdistrictsofthe SouthWest.Thisagainispartofthe modernreverenceforbignessandthe cultofthingscommunal.Itisfairly certainthatthemosteconomicdairyingunitintheSouth-Westisthefamilyfarm,orinthecaseofnewsettlers whohavenogrownfamilyofthetwomanfarm,butpeoplewillstillpersist inthinkingthatbecauseathingis bigitmustnecessarilybebetter.Actuallythisproposalisaninsidiousform ofattackagainstproperty,whichis evidentagainintheproposalthat,in theeventoflandsettlementinthe South-Westafterthewar,theland shouldberentedatanominalrentfrom theGovernmentandthatthefarmer be-notgivenanyopportunityofever lookingforwardtoowninghisown block.Theargumentsfortheproposalareunconvincing-theexpected advantagescouldbeobtainedequally wellbyothermethodswhichwould preservethefreeholdunit-butthe dangerliesinthedesiretoweakenthe institutionofpropertyonthepartof manyindividualsinAustraliawho, thoughasyetsmallinnumber,are neverthelessdecidedlyinfluential.
ThenextproposalIwishtotreatis thebetterknownoneforthenationalisationofmedicalanddentalservices. Themedicalprofessionto-dayprovides uswithanexampleofoneofthefew remainingguilds.Itmayhavefallen onevildays,thesocialidealofthe guildmayhavebeengreatlyweakened, butthecorporatestructureremains. Perhapsthechiefproblemstobefaced inthemedicalprofessionto-dayare theinsufficientnumberofdoctors,fees whicharetoohigh,andtheneedfor increasedco-operationamongspecialists,particularlyinclinicalandhospitaltreatmentandexamination.But ifasocietyreallywishestomendthe presentstateofaffairs,itcandoso withoutrecoursetonationalisation.The factthatadoctorcannotbefoundto takeuppracticeinKondininseemsno adequatereasonforthenationalisation ofthemedicalprofessionatKatanning. Iffeesaretoohighitmightseemto theuninitiatedthatapropercourse mightbetotakestepstohavethem reduced,ortoenablepeopletomeet thembysomeofthemanyadmirable schemesofinsurancethatcanbedeveloped,ortoextendthevoluntary servicesofdoctors.Ifitisdesirable

Idonotwishtheimpressiontobe gainedfromwhatIhavesaidthatCatholicsocialreformisconcernedonly withlong-termplansorshort-termobstruction.TheChurchisnotblindto measureswhichcallforimmediateactiontoalleviatepresenteconomicdistress.ThusShestressesthedesirabilityoftheFamilyWage,aplanfirst putintoforceinCatholiccountriesand highlycommendedbyPopePiusXII. Itissometimessaidthatindustrycannotaffordtopayhigherwages.Such astatementisincorrectsofarasmany WesternAustralianindustriesareconcerned.Figuresavailable manyfirmsandmanyindustriescan affordamuchmoreampleremunerationfortheiremployees.Priceand profitcontrolareothermeasures whichwouldgoalongwaytowards betteringpresent-dayeconomicconditions,andthereareothers.
Ihaveendeavouredtogivesomeidea oftherichnessandthedepthofCatholicSocialTeaching,butIamafraid thatnotverymuchcanbedoneina lectureofalittleoveranhour.SoI havetreatedonlytheChurch'sauthorityinsocialmatters,thefactthatthe Catholicsocialmindhasbeenevident inallagessincethetimeofChrist,and afewoftheaspectsoftwoofthefundamentaldoctrinesofCatholicsocial teaching-theFamilyandProperty.I wouldhavepreferredtoenlargeonany neofthesesubjects.Atthesame timeIwouldhavewishedtospeakto youonathousand-and-oneotherthings sowideistheChurch'steachingonthe socialquestion.Iwouldhaveliked tohavespokentoyouonothermatters rangingfromusuryandtheproblemof themachinetotheChurch'steaching onformsofgovernment.forthereIsa littlemoretothelatterproblemthan iscontainedinBelloc'slucidtag: "Theawfulpowerthatdweltonprivilege, Thatwentwithwomenandchampagneandbridge, Broke;anddemocracyresumedher reign Thatwentwithbridgeandwomenand champagne."
ThebasicpointsofCatholicsocial teachingaresosimplethatIwould liketoseethemincludedinthepostprimarysyllabusofourCatholic schools,ascivicsusedtobetaught whenIwasatschool.Simpletextbookswrittenwiththeneedsofchildreninmindarealreadyavailable,and nodoubttheirproductionwillbecome morefrequentastimegoeson.To methisappealsasbutoneofmanydesirablereformstoourCatholiceducationalsystem. ThereareotherproblemsoftheapplicationofcertainCatholicsocialprinciplestotheworldto-daywhichstill presentcertaindifficultiesandothers whichrequiremorecarefulformulation.Thenagaineventhesimplest principlesrequireconstantthoughtto seehawtheycanbebroughttobear
onthecomplexmodernworld.Itis forthesereasons,andasastillfurther concretesignoftheChurch'spractical interest,thatIhopethatbeforelong RomewillseefittoestablishanAcademyoftheSocialSciencesasshehas establishedanAcademyoftheNatural Sciences.However,evento-daythe CatholicSocialGuildcouldrunacompleteSocialJusticeWeekwithoutonce deviatingfromprinciplesalreadyclear. lylaiddownbytheChurch,andit would-belikethevoiceofAssisiraised intheland.
Ihave,asIsaid,limitedmyselfto thetreatmentofsomeofthesimpler aspectsofPropertyandtheFamily, becausetheseideasarefundamental. Youmayhaveallthefinancialreforms intheworld,butinthelongrun,withouttherestorationofproperty.they willavailbutlittle.EveninSoviet Russiaitmightbepossibletohavea perfectfinancialsystem.Neverthelessaredistributionofincomeandof theownershipofmoneyisimperative to-dayaccordingtothewordsofthe Popes.Itissometimessaidthatthe instinctforpropertyisnotinnatein man,butpropertyisasessentialto thenatureofmanasismonogamy. PrivateLeoMcGradejoinedthe A.I.F.inJuly,1940,attheageof19, andwassentoverseasinJanuary,1941. Hisadvancedtrainingwascompleted intheMiddleEast,andfornine monthshewasstationedonthePerimeterduringthesiegeofTobruk. Throughoutthewholeofhismilitary careerhehadshowngreatfortitude andcourage,whichstoodhimingood steadinthemanydangersandnarrow escapeshepassedthroughunscratched.
OnJuly27,1942.hewastakenprisoneratRuinRidge,wherehisbattalionputupsuchaheroicresistance, buttonoavail.

ThesuccessofCommunismis,innosmallmeasure,duetoa thoroughunderstandingandexploitationofmobpsychology. Perhapsthemostcharacteristicnoteofthemodernmind,apart fromthedistastefordiscipline,istheaversiontothought.Itis preciselythisrejectionofreasonandtherelianceonintuition,emotionand"expert"advicethathaswreckednon-dogmaticreligion andliberalpoliticsandhasmadethemodernworldeasypreyfor superstitionandoppression.Thesocialquestion,whichisuppermostinallmindsbecauseitaffectsallmosttangibly.hadbeenso obscuredbyiniquitous"systems"andirrationalreformprogramme,thatitlentitselfadmirablytopsychologicaltreatmentby Communism.Inthemidstoftheuniversalconfusion,Communismtriumphantlyannouncedasolutionofterrifyingsimplicity. TherewereonlytwomajorpointsofsocialevilWarandFascism. Theydidnotsayhowthiswasso.Theysimplyproclaimedit andhavenotceasedtorepeatit.Itwasnot,ofcourse,mentioned thatWarexcludedclassstrugglewhichlayattherootofCommunisttheoryandpractice,orthatFascismwasahotchpotchofall non-Communistelements,includingwhatisleftofdemocracy.
Whereaseverybodyknowsthatthesolutionofnorealproblem isactuallysimple,thisfacilecatchwordwasseizeduponwithdevouringeagernessbythemostsurprisingpeople.Itwasgiven outlikeaneternaltruthbyallclassesfromdebutantestoAnglican deans.ButCommunismhadanothertrumpcardtoplay.Catholics,theworldover,dedicatedbytheirreligiontotheupholdingofreason,declinedtobe.deceivedbyasloganwhichwassimplyapretext.TheyresistedthemovementsagainstWarand Fascism.ImmediatelyCommunismdeclaimedtragicallythat CatholicismwasinleaguewithFascipm.Thisabsurdliehas beenbroadcastadnauseuminthe"Workers'Star."Itisalsointerestingtonotethatthesametacticshavebeenemployedbythe capitalistpress.Aninexplicablealliancetotheplainman
WhatistherelationofCatholicmtoFascism?Someare readyenoughtoreplythattheChurchisaDivineInstitutionwith amissionpurelyspiritual,havingnotruckwithpoliticalregimes WhilethesupernaturalaspectoftheChurchisunquestionable,it isneverthelessapparentthattoagreaterorlesserextent,Sheis boundupinHerexternalministrybytheexigenciesoftimeand place.WhateverHerdominanceinthefarpastinthecivil sphere,duringthepastcenturyofLiberalismtheChurchhas playedanegligiblepartintheformationofthesecularenvironmentsinwhich,andfrequentlyagainstwhich.Shehadtocontend. IftheworldcomesfinallyintotwosharplydividedcampsrepresentingtheauthoritarianStatesandthoseofanarchy,itwillthen betimefortheChurchtochooseandthechoicewillnotbedifficult.

OntheFeastofChristtheKing,in theSouthPerthparishes,twentylittle boysandgirlsatSt.Columba'sand elevenatSt.Patrick'shadthehappinessofmakingtheirfirstHolyCommunion.Therosesofthesanctuary, theexquisitesinging,thesweetlittle children'svoicesas,kneelinginthe aisle,theyrecitedtheConfiteorand the"Lord,Iamnotworthy,"theother worldlinessofgleamingwhiteand mistyveil,allhelpedtomakeanimpressionthatwilllivelonginthememoryofthosewhowerepresent.Becauseitwasespeciallythefeastofthe littleones,itwastheLittleKingWho wasbeinghonoured.Intilesanctuary atSt.Columba's,abeautifulstatueof theInfantSaviour,crownedandcoped, andcanopiedwithflowers,stoodina raisedpositioninfrontoftheplace wheretheFirstCommunicantsknelt.

AtSt.Patrick's,thelittleonesreceivedtheirHolyCommunionfrom thehandsofRev.FatherG.O'Leary, whothenaddressedthechildrenand theirrelativesinwordsbothtouching andstirring.AftertheMassahappy littlebanquetandagamecontributed towardsmakingthedayamarkedone intheirlives.
Abigcongregationcametoevening devotionsontheFeastofChristthe Kingtoseeafunctionuniqueinthe SouthPerthparish.Aftertherecitation oftheRosary,aprocession,ledby cross-bearerandacolytes,andheaded byRev.Dr.J.T.McMahon,wasformedoftheHolyAngels,theFirstCommunicants,andtheJuniorLegionaries ofMary.Borneonarichly-decorated throne,theLittleKingjourneyedwith themastheywentalong,bent,itwould seem,intheirChildren'sCrusade,on winningnotmerelyJerusalem,buta wholenewJerusalemfortheirLeader. Inthatlitleband,surely,theHeart ofChristmusthavebeenconsoled. Thatnight,afterBenediction,allwent hometouchedandedifiedbythebeautifullittleceremonytheyhadwitnessed Everybody'sSweetheart.

LongbeforeMasswastimedtostart, peopleflockedtothechurch,taxing theseatingaccommodationtotheutmost,foritisremarkablehowthe beautifulceremonyofFirstHoly Communion,age-old,yetevernewas itis,delightstheheartsofallCatholics.
Itiswithfeelingsofjay,notunmixedwithreverence,thatourgoodCatholicmothersdelighttoadorntheirlittle childrenforthis,theirfirstreception oftheDivineGuest,andsoitwasa mostcharmingpicturethesmallpeople presentedas,dressedinspotlesswhite, theyenteredthechurch,proceedingup theaisletotaketheseatsreservedfor them.Lovinghandshadbeautifully decoratedtheHighAltarwiththe choicestofblooms,butnoneweremore fragrantthanthat"bouquetofsweet flowers,"kneelinginsuchreverent adorationbeforetheirEucharistic King.
ThroughouttheMassthechildren's voiceswereliftedinsongandprayer, particularlylovelybeingthenewhymn, "Jesu,Jesu,CometoMe."Justbefore receiving,theyrecitedaloudtheirlit. tleActs.Thesolemnityofthismomentwaspoignantwithmemoriesfor manyinthatlargecongregation,as thoughtsofsuchanotherdayintheir ownlivescamecrowdingin.
Atthealtarrails,thechildren'sre collectedattitudeandreverentbearing wasevidencethattheyunderstoodthe momentousnessofwhatwashappening. Carefulandthoroughteachingwasreflectedinalltheiractions,andtheir teacheristobecomplimentedonthe beautifulwayinwhichthechildren werepresented.
Inashortaddresstothechildren, ,Rev.FatherWallace,aftercongratulatingthechildren,toldofthejoyand blisswhichwastobetheirsthatday, andurgedthemtokeepspotle,ssthe sweetinnocenceoftheirsouls.He spoketenderlyoftheloveJesushad forthem,andofhowdeartoHisSacredHeartweretheirprayers.Heaskedthemthen,toprayfortheirpriests, fortheirteachers,andfortheirparents.Hebeggedofthemtoremain everfaithfultoJesusintheBlessed Sacrament.Buttotheparentshis wordswerelesstender.Theywere sternandfraughtwithwarning.Some, hesaid,werepresentthatmorningfor thefirsttimeinmanymonths,becausetheywishedtoseetheirlittle childmakeitsFirstCommunion,but, hesaid,theywerealreadypreparedto snatchthatjoyfromtheirlittleonetopluckitstraightfromthearmsof itsEucharisticKing-bytheirbadexample,bytheirinfidelitytotheSundayMassandtheSacraments.Heremindedthemthattheyweretheguardiansoftheprecioussoulsoftheirlit. tlechildrenandGodwouldonedayrequireanaccountoftheirstewardship.

Dr.Dafoediedonlyafewminutes afterbeingadmittedtoSt.Joseph's Hospital,atNorthBay,havingbeen broughtbyambulancefromhishome inCallander.Althoughnotinthe bestofhealthforsomemonths,Dr. DafoehadbeeninTorontovisitinghis brother,Dr.WilliamA.Dafoe,asurgeon,andhadbeentakensuddenlyill thedayofhisreturn.
Deathwasduetopneumonia.Dr. Dafoewas60yearsofageonMay29, onedayafterthequintupletshadobservedtheirninthbirthday.

Dr.Dafoewasanobscurecountry doctorwhenhewassuddenlygiven worldprominenceasthedoctorcalled inatthetimeofthebirthoftheQuintuplets.Thattheysurvivedwasdue inlargemeasuretohisunremitting care.ActuallyDr.Dafoeofficiatedat thebirthofthreeoftheQuintuplets, MesdamesLabelleandLegros,two neighbouringmidwives.havingassisted atthebirthofthefirsttwo.
