Itisindeedpossibletoleadanheroic Christianlifeinanunnaturalsocietytensofthousandsofmenaredoingit to-dav,huttensofthousands,too,are attainingtothegloryofpersecution andmartyrdom,andfewwilldenythat theiractionsadornwithiewelsthediademoftheBrideofChrist.Butsuch thin.-,arenotoftheorderofnaturetheyareofthesupernatural And manofhimselfisanearthlything,a strangebeingwanderingaroundthe faceoftheearthwithevenstranger dreamsinhishead.Hemayhean angel.hutheisafallenangel.
EvenGod'slawsareconcernedwith thesocial'natureofman.TheTen Commandmentsarenotthemere whimsofacapriciousCreator,holding mankindinthehollowofHishand; theyaresaneandsolidsociallegislation.Theyupholdthedignityofthe home,thecontractofmarriage,and thepossessionsofone'sneighbour.
Chestertoninhiswanderingsthrough thefieldofreligiousspeculation,created anewreligionandfoundit'wasorthodoxy.Iamwonderingwhowillbe thefirstsocialreformertocreateanew Jerusalemandfindthathehaswritten overthegatesofthecityaveryancientsetoflawswhichGodoncegave amidstthethunderandlightningof Sinai.Andwhowillhethefirstof oursocialreformerstopavethestreets ofhisnewJerusalemwithburnished goldandfindthathehasfashionedfor himselfavision-oftheNaturalLaw? Suchamanwillbeaverycleverman, forhewillbeaverysimpleman;but meanwhilewemustsufferfoolsas gladlyaswecan.Wemustsufferthe Communist,whowillgiveusthenew Jerusalemwhichhasnotemple,the Jerusalemofthesocialreformer,which isallsuburbs,andHitler'sJerusalem, whichhasnoJews.Andwemustsuffer,too,ourownDirectorGeneralof Reconstruction,whoisworriedlestthe taskoftherenewalofmanmayprove sodifficultthatitwillhefoundimpossibletoshoehornhimintoaNew Order.
Ihavesaidthatyoucannotbuilda housewithoutsomereferencetothe sortofcreaturethatisgoingtolivein it.Ifamandesirestowalkerectin
hishouseitisdesirablealsothatthe wallsshouldbesixfeethigh.Ifhe hasapassionforplayinghighjinksin thekitchenitmaybeaswellthatthey shouldbesevenfeethigh.TheCatholicChurchalonepossessesthetrue 1,n,iwledzeofthenatureofman.She aloneisthebestguidetoatruesocial order.And-thatistheverdictofhistory.AsLeoXIII.wroteinhisencyclical,"TheChristianConstitutionof States":"TheCatholicChurch,thatimperishablehandiworkofourall-mercifulGod,hasforherimmediateand naturalpurposethesavingofsoulsand securingourhappinessinheaven.Yet inregardtothingstemporalSheisthe sourceofbenefitsasmanifoldandgreat asifthechiefendofherexistencewere toensuretheprosperingofourearthly life.Andintruth,whereverthe Churchhassetherfoot,shehas straightwaychangedthefaceofthings. andhasattemperedthemoraltoneof thepeoplewithanewcivilisation,and withvirtuesbeforeunknown.Allnationswhichhaveyieldedtohersway havebecomeeminentfortheirculture, theirsenseofjustice,andthegloryof theirhighdeeds."
Inmakingthatstatement,PopeLeo certainlydidnotexempttheancient civilisationsofGreeceandRomeand thosestillmoreancientfromhiscomparison.YetIamawareto-daythat therearepeoplewhoshouldknowbetterwhoarefoundtosaythatthesayingsofConfuciusareequaltothewisdomofChrist,thattheConfucianismof ChinaisequaltothecharityofChristianEuropeTheyfollowBuddhaand tlic.,findthattheyhavechosenBarabhas,theyadoptthenewSovietphilosophyandtheyfindthemselvesliving amidstthestrangeoldsmellofslavery.
Thatlevelofmodernintelligence whichhasbeensodulledasnottosee thesupremacyofEuropeancivilisation givesstrangeresultsinotherspheres ofknowledgeaswell.Iamreminded ofonescientistwhowoulddenythe ,loryofAdambecausenottheJews alonebutallnationsandtribeshavea traditionoftheFall;whowoulddeny thattheaboriginesbelieveinadeity becausetheyfindevidenceonlyforthe factthattheybelieveinadevil.Again, thereisthewell-knownpsycho-analyst, apupilofFreud,whotracedindetail inapowerfulthesistheshortcomingsof theearlylifeofMary,theMotherof God,becausehehadreadthe"EtMariamabsolvisti"oftheDiesTrae,and hadneverheardofMagdalen.
ButaCrusadeofCommunionswill notofitselfrestorethesocialorderany morethan,asPiusXIoncepointedout, thecontemplativelifeofaTeresaof Lisieuxwillconverttheracesofthe EasttothetrueFaithwithoutthe physicalactivityofaFrancisXavier. Wecannotindeedgivetoomuchattentiontothehealthandnatureofthatsocietyinwhichmanmustworkouthis supernaturalend.PiusXIsetupSocial JusticeasoneofthemaintasksofCatholicAction.Itmaynotbepossible tocurethesocialillsoftheworldwithoutbreathingthelifeofChristianity intotheworld,but,unfortunately,it appearsto-daythatitmaynotbepossibletoconverttheworldwithoutfirst curingitssocialills.Itisdifficult tocampaignagainstbirthprevention withoutfirstchangingthosematerial circumstanceswhichstiflenewlifeas weedsstiflegrowth.Youwillnot completelyrestorethesanctityofmarriageaslongasyoutolerateasociety whichbreedsdivorce.Youwillnot abolishclasswarfareto-daybypreachingtheloveofone'sneighbour,noryet willyoudoitwithoutit.

Thereisanothertypeofperson,unfortunatelynotrareevenamongCatholics,whosaybyallmeansletthe Churchpropagatesuchofhersocial idealsasarebasedonwhattheyinterprettobetheteachingsofChrist,let Herpreachjusticeandcharity,butlet HerkeeptoHerownsphereinmattersmoretechnical.Theydonotsay letushavenomoreOzanamsandTeresas,nomoreCrusadesofPrayerbut theydotendtosayletushaveno moreCanossas,wheretheEmperor kneltinsupplicationbeforethePope. Welive,theysay,intwoperfectsocieties,perfectbecauseeachcontainsthe meansnecessaryforitsend,the ChurchandtheState.Bothcanget alongifneeds.beverywellwithout referencetooneanother:atthemost aconcordatgrantingtheChurchcertainrightsasbefitherspiritualmissionisallthatisnecessary;butitis sheerpresumptiononthepartofthe Churchtosaythatthewage-contract shouldbemodifiedwherepossibleby someformofpartnership.

IhavedealtwiththoseCatholics whosaythatthesocialquestionis purelyaspiritualquestion;IhavetracedtheerrorofthosewhodenytheauthorityoftheChurchinsocialmatters -therighttosay,forexample,that theyshall,notbelongtoaparticular politicalparty,orthattheyshallnot v,iteatthenextelections.Butsins ofomissionareindeedmoredeadly, andtherearethosewhodenytheimportanceofthesocialquestion.True, indeed,thesocialquestionisnotso importantinAustraliaesitiselsewhere.ItisnotsoimportantinPerth asitisintheslumsofMelbourneor thealleysofNewYork.Butinall conscienceitishadenough,badenough totemptmentostrangeformsofgovernment.Further,thesocialquestion isnotpurelyaneconomicquestion.It touchesonsuchthingsaseducationand marriage.Itisconcernedwithsecularismanddivorce,andwiththewider aspectsofculture.

QuestionsofPrinciple.
ThescopeofanyproposalsthePope mightbeexpectedtosponsorasamediatorwill,however,notbedeterminedbycircumstancesalone,Theywill alsofiesharplylimitedbythecanons ofprincipleitself.Asaplannerfor peace,thepresentRomanPontiff,followingtheexamplesetbyhispredecessorsfromPopeLeoXIIItothe latePopePiusXI,hasbeenexplicit indeclaringamultitudeofconditions towhichanyandeverypeacemust conformifitistobegenuineandlasting.Ifheweretoentertainproposals,asamediator,whichwouldconflictwiththesesofrequentlymanifestedprinciples,itwouldobviouslydetractfromtheprinciplesthemselves.
RecentsuggestionsthatthePope mightbeinterestedinsomesortof negotiatedpeacehavecalledforthobservationsabroad-asovertheVatican radiostation-andonthissideofthe water,totheeffectthatPopePius XIIhas,inallhispeaceutterances,invriablyincludedtheideaofjusticein anynotionofpeace-theoppositeofa "peaceatanyprice."
ApeaceproposalthatdidnotcontaintheFourFreedoms-andsome furtherguaranteesofhumanlibertywouldbe,intheVaticanpointofview, norealpeaceproposal,butmerelya baitdisplayedbyschemingpoliticians.
HowfartheRopemayactually functionasamediatorinanyfuture peaceispurespeculation.Itis, however,nospeculationbutacertain truthtoassertthat,iforwhenhe doesmediate,hisproposalswillconformtothegreatbasicrequirements ofChristianjusticeandcharity.

Evenuponthosewhomisunderstand orignoreHim,HemakesHissunto riseandHisraintofall.Nowhere morethanintheGospelofSt.John (andespeciallyintheSupper-roomdiscourseandprayer)dowereadofthe homelierandmorehumanaspectsof thispaternallove.Itisofasublime, setintimateandmysticalvalue.
HadOurLordmadenootherrevelationsavethis,Hisdirectlysocialinfluencewouldhavebeengreat.For eachandeverymanishenceforward setindirectrelationshiptothesame God."BeyeperfectasyourFather inheavenisperfect,"setsallmenmovingtowardsthesamecentre,andthereforenearer,necessarily,towardsone another;whichneednothappenif, sotospeak,theytrytomeetbymovingaboutonthecircumferenceofthat Circle.

Itisofverypracticalimportancetorealisetheimplicationsof thedoctrineoftheCommunionofSaints.Forbetweenthefaithfulonearth(thatis,thosesoulswhohavetheindwellingofthe HolyGhostthroughsanctifyinggrace)andthesoulssufferingin PurgatoryandthesoulsconfirmedingraceinHeaven,thereisa real,operativeunion.Manyofourprayersinvoketheaidofthe Saints,andmanyofthegraceswereceivecomethroughtheintercessionofmembersoftheChurchTriumphant.OfOurLady, throughherofficeasMediatrixofallgraces,isthisparticularly true.Again,thesoulsofthefaithful,departedfromthislifebut notyetadmittedtotheBeatificVision,dependonusinavery vitalway,forbyourprayers,unitedtothemeritsofChrist,they maybeloosedfromtheirsins.Sothat,betweenthethreestates thereisanessentialandvitalinterdependence,andatruespiritual bondofunion.TheChurch,then,isverymuchmorethantheexternalorganisationweseeoperativeintheworld.Itistruly Christ'sMysticalBody,radiatingitsinfluencefromtheprobation ofearth,throughthepurificationofPurgatory,eventotheeternal beatitudeofGodinHeaven.

Weallknowthatoneofthethingsof whichthenationsaremorejealousis thelinguisticinheritage.Ifweproposeanationallanguage,likeBasic English,fortheadoptionasinternational,manynationswillfeeldiminish'dintheirownimportance;otherswill fearthepossibilityofabsorptionin thedistantfuture,otherswill feelsimplyjealous;butallwillrefuse toco-operate,andiftheGovernments forreasonsofopportunitywouldeventuallyagree,thepeopleofthevarious nationswouldnotstudyoruseit, frustratingtheattemptandsolosing apreciousinstrumentforthebetteringofworldunderstanding.

TheKingdomofGodinasmuchas itisavisibleinstitutionamongstso manymerelyhumaninstitutions,isthe CatholicChurch.But,ourexternal adherencetothisvisibleKingdom,or theCatholicChurch,demandsatthe sametimethattheinvisiblekingdom ofgraceberealisedwithinus.Itwas tothis,bytheway,thatChristwasreferringwhenHesaidtothePharisees: thekingdomofGodiswithinyou!
What,then,isthisinvisiblekingdom ofgracethatI'mtalkingabout,this kingdomthatChristsaysiswithinus?
Well,tryandfollowmenow,andI'll seeifIcanexplainitinafewwords -thoughGodknowsthat'sdifficultto do.
AswereceivetheSacramentofBaptism,whichmakesusformallymem,hersofthevisiblekingdomofGodon earth,Godinfusesintooursouland intoeveryfibreofourbeingamysteri. ouspowerorforce,whichHehas createdforthepurpose,andwhich hastheeffectofmakinguscapableof livingwithanewkindoflife,much higherthanhumanlife-asamatter offact,thisstrangeforceorenergy whichGodinfusesintousmakesus capableofsharinginsomemysterious finitewayintheveryLifeoftheTrinity.
oftheDivineLife.Withoutthe strengtheningpowerofgraceour beings,ourfaculties,wouldshrivelinto annihilationattheveryintensityof theDivineLife,oreventhatapproximationtoitinwhichwedoshare throughgrace.
Well,now,Ihopethatmuchatleast isclear.Graceisamysteriousforce whichGodcreatesandwhichpermeatesourwholebeingwhenever'we receiveoneofthesevenSacraments validlyandlicitily.Themoregrace weobtainalsothroughthevariouspracticesoftheCatholicwayoflife,especiallythroughtheMass,soareourfacultiesstrenghtenedandrenderedcapable ofsharingstillmorefullyanddy namicallvintheDivineLifeofGod.
Ofcourse,athousandquestionswill immediatelysuggestthemselvestoyou. Forexample,ifwearegivensuchextraorrlinarypowersatBaptism,andif wearealreadycapableofsharingin somewayorotherinthekindoflife thatGod'lives,thenwhyaren'tweconsciousofallthischangethathasbeen effectedinus?Andtheansweristhat wedon'tconsciouslyfeeltheeffect, ofbeingchangedlikethisuntilafter death,andthatistheindescribable thrillofheaven theconsciousliving ofthisnewlifewithGod.Although wemayanddoactuallysharenowin thisnewlife,solongaswehavegrace energisingwithus,yettheeffectis blanketed,asitwere,sofarasfeelings areconcernedinthislife.Welook thesame,wefeelthesame-butwe're notthesame!Inotherwords,as Christianswegothroughlifechanged creatures.nolongerhuman-never,of course,divine-butastheysaydivinised,sharingalready,thoughnotyet physicallyconsciousofit,thekindof lifethatGodlives.Andthepointin theIncarnationisthatGodbecamea manandsharedourhumanlife,that bydoingsoHemightredeemusand makeuscapable,ifwesowish,of sharinginHisownlife-theLifeofthe FatherandoftheSonandoftheHoly Ghost.

TheGospelsoneverypagespeakof thekingdomofGodasadivine,spiritualkingdomestablishedbyChrist,and inwhichthesubjectsormembersare houndtooneanotherandtoChrist throughthesamedivinelifeinwhich allshare,receivingitfromChrist-as St.Johnsays,"ofHisfulnesswehave allreceived."Thiskingdom,whichis nothingelsethanthe"Communionof Saints,"embraces,asIsaid,allthe faithfulonearth,allthoseinheaven, allthoseinPurgatory,andeventhe angels.Allshareinthesameblessings,
meritsandprayers,joysandsufferings. St.Paul,particularly,inexpounding thisdoctrine,explainshowourprayers andpenancesmaybeofferedvicariouslyforothers,whethertheybestillon earthorperhapsinPurgatory.Itis thisdoctrinewhichisthejustification orratherfoundationforCatholicdevotiontothevariousSaintsoftheChurch -forweknowthattheyarestillvery muchinterestedinus.Justasour dearonesinPurgatory,forexample, knowifwearestillthinkingofthem andhelpingtheminthevariousways thatonlyweonearthstillcanhelp them.
