Thisisthefourthanniversaryof 'thathorribledayonwhichwaslaunchedthemostformidabledestructive, anddevastatingwarofalltimes,awar whichappalseveryonewhohasa heartandhumanfeelings.Forebodingthisuniversaldisaster,whichthen menacedthegreathumanfamily.when butafewdaysseparatedusfromthe outbreakofhostilities,onAugust24, 1939,Weaddressedtotherulersand peoplesaferventappealandasuppliantwarning:Nothing,Wesaid,is lostbypeace.Allcanbelostby war.Ourvoicewasheard:butit failedtoenlightentheintellector penetratetotheheart.Thespiritof violencetriumphedoverthespiritof concordandagreement-butthattriumphwasadefeat.
To-day,onthethresholdofthefifth yearofwar,eventhose-whothen countedonspeedymilitaryachievementsandontherapidconclusionof atriumphantpeace,astheycasttheir glanceonthescenewithinandwithouttheirowncountry,feelonlysorrowandcontemplateonlyruins.To manywhoremaineddeaftoOurappeal,sadexperienceandthespectacle

IssuesApproachingClbnax. Throughcolossalstruggles,theexternalissuesofthewarareapproaching andconvergingontheirclimax.Never wastheScriptureexhortation,"Re-
ceiveinstruction,youthatjudgethe earth'(PsalmsII,10),moreinvoked ormoreurgentthaninthishour,when thetragicrealityofthingsspeaksto all.
Everywheremenareenteringinto themselvestomeditate,theireyesfixed ontheruins.Itistruewisdomto encourageandsustainthemintheir trials.Todiscouragethemwouldbe fatalblindness.Ineveryland,men's mindsarebeingalienatedfromthe cultofviolence,astheyseeinthehorridharvestofdeathanddestructionits deservedcondemnation.Inallnations theregrowsanaversiontothebrutalityofthemethodsoftotalwar,which tendtopassbeyondeveryjustlimit andevernormofdivineandhuman law.
Moretormentingthanever,there comestosoftenthemindsandhearts ofmenthedoubtwhetherthecontinuationofhostilities-andofsuchhada ties-isandcanbesaidtobestillin conformitywithnationalinterests,or reasonableandjustifiableinthelight oftheChristianandhumanconscience.
Aftersomanyviolatedtreaties,
AgainstVindictiveor OppressiveSequel
aftersomanyoutragedagreements, aftersomanybrokenpromises,after somanycontradictoryShiftsofpurposeandaction,confidencebetween thenationshasfallensolowasto weakenanddiscourageeverygenerous resolve.
Therefore.Weturntothosewhose concernitistoencouragemeetingsand arrangementsforpeace,andwithan appealthatcomesfromthedepthsof Oursorrow-strickenheartWesayto them:
StrengthCanBeGenerous.
Realstrengthneednotfearbeing generous.Italwayshasthemeans tosecureitselfagainstanymisinterpretationofitsreadinessandwillto makepeace,aswellasagainstother possiblerepercussions.Donotshatterorsmotherthepeople'syearning forpeacebyactswhich,insteadof promotingconfidence,rathergivenew lifetothefireofhateandstiffenthe willtoresist.
Giveallnationsthewell-foundld hopeofaworthypeace,whichshall notoffendeithertheirrighttoliveor theirsenseofhonour.Makeclear beyondallpossibledoubtthatyour conclusionsagreehonestlywithyour principles,thatyouractsrespond whollytoyourdeclarationsforajust peace.

TheNewYorkCatholicweekly, "America,"hasbeenconcentratingon thequestionofvocations.Recently itquotedfromsomeoftheanswersof thestudentsthemselves,astowhat theythinkofvocations.Tosecurea representativeseriesofrepliesfrom schoolshastakentime.Theseanswersaresignificant,assurveyshave shownthatmostgirlsdecidetofollow arelgiousvocationbetweentheages ofsixteenandnineteen,sothatthe graceofavocationusuallycomesto themwhiletheyareinhighschool.
Manyanswersreceivedfromhighschoolandcollegestudentsinanumber ofdifferentinstitutionsinvarious partsofthecountryconfirmtheremarkmadeinaprecedingarticle,that itwouldbewellifthewholequestion ofreligiousvocationsreceivedamuch moreadequatetreatmentinour schools.Manyoftherepliesofthe studentsshowawantofdefiniteappreciationofthenatureofareligious vocation.Averygreatnumberof theanswersspeakvaguelyofa"call," andthestatement:"Girlsenterthe conventbecausetheyhaveacallfrom remrsmany,manytimes,But seldomdothosewhoreplytothe questionnaireseemtohaveanydefiniteideaastowhatthiscallis,what arethemarksofavocation,what qualitiesarerequiredinaSister;orof thedignity,happinessandbeautyof thereligiouslife.
Ifthisimportantsubject,sointerestinginitselfsogloriousinthehonourwhichitgivestoChristandHis Church,andsoimportantbecauseof theservicesoftheSisterstoboth ChurchandStateweretoreceive,from theSistersthemselves,thetreatment itdeserves,whetherinclassesofreligion.orliteratureorhistoryorsocial serviceoreveneconomicsandsociology,onewouldthinkthataverydifferentseriesofanswerswouldbegivento

Someofthegirls(ofcoursealltheir answersareanonymous)statetheir ownpersonalattitudetowardsareligiousvocation.Thus,onegivesthefollowingreasonswhyshedoesnotwish tobecomeaSister:"Inthefirstplace IdonotfeelIhaveavocation.Ido notliketostudyandIdonotthinkI couldspendtherestofmydaysdoing this.Then,too,Iwouldmissthe worldlypleasures,suchasmovies,dancingandperhapsthevocationofa nursewhichIamdeeplyconsidering. Iwouldbeseparatedfrommyfamily,andalsoIwouldliketobringup oneofmyown.' Shegoesontosay whyshemightliketobecomeaSister.
"Iwouldhavethefeelingofsecurity forlife.Therewouldalwaysbeone tocareformeduringtimeofsickness.I wouldreceivegraces,andGodmade apromisethatallthosewhofollow Himwouldbesaved.Too,Iwould havetheloveofhundredsofchildren."

Asurprisinglylargenumberofstudentswhohaveansweredthequestions giveastheiropinionthatmanywomen entertheconventbecausetheyhave beendisappointedinlove.Wesaya surprisingnumberinviewofthefact thatinrealityveryfewvocationscome throughthiscause.Perhapsthese studentshavepickedupthisideafrom readingfictioninwhichthelovelorn maidenseeksconsolationinthecloister.

Sinarchismisoverwhelminglyarural movementseekingtoimplementthe Revolutionforthepeasants.The sloganoftheSinarchistsistherestorationofthepropertytothepeople Theydemandthebreakingupofthe collective"elidos,"thewithdrawalof the"agrarianreserves,"andthehandingoverfreeholdofsmallparcelsof "ejidos"landtothepeons.This,they claim,canbetheonlybasisofjustice tothepeons,andtheonlywaytoa revivalofrurallifeandproduction urgentlyneededforthewar.Forthe future,Sinarchismplansforruraleducation,scientificfarming,hygienic housing,co-operatives,creditunonsfor therehabilitationoftheMexicancountryside.

TheSinarchistshavebeenthefirst todosomethingbesidestalkinthe "MarchtotheSea."TheMexican plateau,withitsgreatmetropolisof MexicoCity,isdenselypopulated, whiletheexcellentlow-landsand coastalareashavebeensparselysettledpeople.The"MarchtotheSea" hasbeenfrequentlymootedbyMexicanleadersinrecentyears.Withthe approvalandencouragementofPresidentCamacho,despitethefierceoppositionoftheCommunists,theSinarchistshaveestablishedtwothriving coloniesinLowerCaliforniaandSonora,onthePacific.
TheSinarchistmovementisessentiallyaMexicanphenomenon.Itis inspiredbyanintensepatriotismand spiritofnationalindependence,and self-sacrifice.Itinheritssomethingof thespiritofthe"Cristeros":butcondemnsarmedconflictandviolence.Its powerismainlyinthecountryside.
LeadsAndInspires, Inthecities,particularlyMexico City,-wheretheCommunistsdominate themajority ofthesyndicates (unions),itiscomparativelyweak.But throughouttheRepublicitleadsand inspiresoverhalfamillionpeople.
TheCommunistPartyhasdoneall initspowertomisrepresent,topersecuteandsuppressthem.InJanuary, 1943,anoutbreakofviolenceinone oftheStateswasattributedtothe Sinarchists.Investigationrevealed thatthedisturbancewaspromotedby theRedsaspartofaplantohave themovementbanned.Camachois
handlingthesituationwithsuperb diplomacy.Ontheonehand,hehas favouredandencouragedtheSinarchists,whoalonehavesomethingconstructivetooffertomeetthenation's ruralcrisis.Ontheotherhand,he haskepttheCommunistsinhand,and largelypreventedviolenceagainstthe Sinarchists
AttemptstoDiscredit.
Meanwhile,theCommunistpropagandamachineintheoutsideworld isconductingaconcertedcampaign toswearanddiscreditthemovement. ItiscondemnedasFascist,reactionary, andclerical,Ititnotclerical,for thereisnotapriestinthemovement. Thisbriefstatementistakenfrom KarlAdam'sfamousbook,"TheSpirit ofCatholicism,"writesMichaelStanleyinthe"IrishCatholic."Itsums upwhatisaveryprofoundandimportantfactorintheattitudeofthe Churchtowardsthethingsofthis world.Itexposesacriticismwhich iscommonlyheldagainstreligion:that itistoounworldly,toomuchattached tothenextlife,toodivorcedfromordinaryexperience.Butsuchcriticismarisesalwaysfromignoranceofthe Church'sexactteachingonthese pointsRushingtheVerdict.
IntheestimationoftheCatholic Churchtheprimaryobjectinlifeis JesusChrist,Godmademan;inother wordstheprimaryobjectisthesupernaturalforChristdefinitelypointedtowardsthethingsofthespiritrather thantothethingsoftheflesh.OutsidersthereforecommonlyseeinChristianityonlyanappealforsupernaturalism,thinkingthatthismeansan abandonmentorrejectionofthenaturallife.Butthisistoohastyajudg ment.Itignoresmanyapoint.It isrushingtheverdict.
Yetwecansympathisewiththeir attitude.Whenallissaidanddone, itisasnaturalhumanbeingsthatwe liveandthink,andthisthereforeis thebasicpositionfromwhichtojudge anything.Therearecertainfundamentalthingswhichcannotbegain-
sayed,andordinarylivingisoneof them. InitselfisOfprimeimportance;ourconsciouisnessisbuilt uponandacknowledgesthatfact. Fromthismanygoontosaythatlife istheonlyimportantthing;butthis isnotself-evident;wemusttrytofind ifthereisanyotherstatewhichis alsoimportantbeforegivingassent.
WhyReligionisSuspect.
Butonethingiscertain:"Lifeis real,lifeisearnest."Thusanysystemwhichsavoursofarejectionoflife isfelttobetooabstractandtoomuch outoftouchwithrealitytobetrue. Forthisreasonreligionissuspect,and itisusuallysufficienttoantagonisean unbelievertostarttalkingofGodand heavenandhellandtherest.He asksnottobeannoyedwithwhathe termstheseabstractions.
Apartaltogetherfromanysubjective reasonsfordislikingsuchconsiderations,hemayfeelthatsuchtalkistoo speculativetobeofanypracticalassistanceinthisworldofourswhichis tooconcernedwithmattersofaction andarrogance.Toooftenfortheordinarymanreligionmeanssomething tobetakenseriouslyonlybyabnormal andquietpeople;toooftenitmeans merelyanadditiontoliferatherthana foundation.
ButinthecaseofChristianitythis isanunfortunatemisconception. Christianitydoesdealwithlifeasitis livedbyallclassesofpeople;itisof concernnotchieflyforthescientistor thephilosopherbutforthelowlyand
thehumble,thesinnersandthedejected.Itistruethatsomeofthe religionsoftheEast,whenbelieved inatallarebelievedinonlyatthe costofsacrificingordinaryliving;this isbecausetheyaremerelyhumanapproachestotruthandinconsequence liabletohumanerror.Butsomething whichcomesfromGodwillnotsuffer suchlimitations:itwillembraceall thingsandallsidesoflife.Atruth revealedbyGodbecauseofitsvery source,willbeall-embracing,all-considerate,all-understanding,itwillnotbe asectariantruth(forGodisnotcon finedwithinboundaries)butforall mankindinallagesandinallspheres.
NatureandtheSupernatural.
Takingthisviewpoint,wecansee .thatChristianitystandsoutasthereligionwhichappliestolowmanaswell astohighman,toignorantmanas wellastoeducatedman,totheman ofactionaswellastothecontemplativeman,tosinneraswellasto saint.Christianityhasthehallmark ofthedivine.Itpointstoadivinity Whoisconcernedwithalltypesand notjustwithchosenpeople.Ittranscendsallbordersoftimeorspace.For instance,wecanseethatChristianity isatranscendenceofJudaism;it couldnotbecontainedinaninadequatevessel.
Infact,allearthlyboundariesare inadequate;Christianityneverreaches alimit.Itextendsoverallandembracesall.Ifitshouldrejector abandonanythingitwouldnotbefulfillingitsend.If,therefore,itshould abandonordinarylivingitwouldnot betotallytrue.Thatiswhythereis substantialgroundforthecommonsensefeelingthatanyreligionwhich doesnotrecogniseandacceptordinarylivingisuselessandalmosttobe ignored.
ThisfaultisnottrueofCatholicism. TheCatholicChurchrecognisesandenhancesthenaturalsideofmanaswell asthespiritualside;itteachesthatos dinarylife,whenlivedinaccordance withthelawsofGodandofthe Church(whichisGod'sspokesmanon earthinmattersoffaithandmorals)is good.Perfectionistoleaveallthings andfollowChrist;buttheordinarylife, undertheguidanceofChrist,isalsoof greatvalue.
NotTooEarthly,NotTooBpirituaL CatholicChristianityisneithertoo earthlyfortheholyanddevout,nor toospiritualfortheworker.Allcan reachtheirendinGod.Thegraceof Godisopentoall.Lifeisgood;it mattersonlyinwhatwelive.Even whentheChurchseemstoberejectingmerelyhumanvaluessheisreally onlyemphasisingthegreaterimportanceofsuperhumanvalueswhilestill retainingthehuman.
AlltalkofChristianitybeingoutof touchwithlifeissuperficial.Canwe saythatChristwasoutoftouchwith life?CanwesaythatthePopeis outoftouchwithlife?Canwesay thattheChurchasabodyisoutof touchwithlife?Canwesay,especiallyto-daywhennaturalisticidealsare collapsingallround,thattheteaching oftheChurchisoutoftouchwithlife? Fromallturmoiloflifeitemerges thatman'sinherentnatureissuchthat arealisationofhissupernaturalendis necessarytofulfilindignityevennaturalfunctions.Thereisnocontrast betweennatureandthesupernatural butaharmonywhichitisthebusiness ofreligiontoestablish.

RecentlyhomefromPapua,andnow aChaplaintotheForces,FatherLyons wasinapositiontospeakfirsthand onasubjectwhichisofexceptional interesttousallatthepresenttime. Littleisknownofthefateofsomeof
ourMissionariesandtheworkof manyyearshasbeendestroyedinsome centresbytheall-devouringwarmachine.However,itwasnotthewar oneaboutwhichhespoke,butrather themissionworld-itsamazinggrowth andvitality,itsendlessinterestand achievementsoverbarbarism. He gavehiseagerlistenersaveryvivid pictureoflifeinthePacificIslands andtheylearnedmanyinterestingand inspiringthingsabout'theirdarker brothers.
Goingbackoveraperiodoftwelve yearsinrapiddiorama,thespeaker gaveglimpsesofthebarrenandinhospitablelandaswellasthegloriesof mountainscenerythatgotomakeup thePapuanterritory.Thenamesof placesmadefamiliarbythewarnews hadadeepermeaningforFather Lyons,whorecalledthepioneering workundertakenbytheFrenchand otherMissionarieswho,beginningwith theestablishmentofsawmills,plantationsandotheressentialsforthe foundingofa"Station,"soonhadcoloniesofnativeswhohadembracedthe CatholicFaith.Christianthought andlifeproducedapeopleintelligent anddependablewhowereproudtodiscardancienttribalcustomsinfavour ofthetrueFaith.
TheloyaltyandfidelityofthenativeswhichhascompelledsuchadmirationsincetheoccupationofNew Guineabyourtroops,canbeattributedtotheinfluenceoftheMissions,of alldenominations,andtothefinelend ership.formanyyears,ofthelateSr HubertMurray,theLieut.Governor, whowasagreatCatholicandagreat man.Thenativesrecognisedinhim ajustandwiseruler,whonevershowedfavouritismandwhoalwaysgave practicalhelptotheMissionaries.He isrememberedasoneofthemostcapableoftheColonialGovernorswho everadministeredinNewGuinea.
Uptilltheoutbreakofthewar, Papuawasthelandofgo-slow.The whitepopulatiqa,comprisedmostly GovernmentofficialsandMisisonaries. Unfortunately,the"Stations"onthe variousislandshavemanytimesbeen takenformilitaryobjectives,andhave sufferedthefateofsuch.OnoneoccasionaJap'plane,mistakingtheBishop'sbungalowforawirelessstation, swoopeddownandfiredupontheoccupantswhohadvacatedtheirverandahchairstowatchtheplanewhich theythoughttobeanAustralianmachine.Inafewsecondsthechairs wereriddledwithbullets,buttheBishopandcompanionsremainedunharmed.
Whereverpossible,Missionarieshave remainedattheirposts,butinsome instancestheywereorderedtoleave. andthistheywerereluctantlycomnelledtodo.OneoftheCarmeliteConventshadbeenforcedtoclosedown andithadbeenmadeknownthatlaps werenowusingsomeofthechurches asmunitiondumps.
Beforetheoutbreakofthewar,it wasmarvelloustocomeuponabeautifulchurchsomewhereinthewilder-
ingmagnificentworkteachingthechildren,whocanequalthewhitechildin primaryschoolwork.Excellenttypistsandtelephonistshaveresultedfrom thecarefultrainingandtheYuleIslandnativesarefamousfortheirexcellentEnglish.

OneoftheFathers,agreatmusician, hadbeenabletoorganiseandtraina boys'choir,andtheirsingingofmotets andothersacredmusicwasarevelation.Thenativeshadalsoshown greataptitudeforclericalandmechanicalwork,whenonceeducated,andthe Governmentdideverythingpossible toencouragetheireducationwhich wasleftalmostentirelytotheMissions.
Someamusingexamplesofnativeingenuitypunctuatedthediscourse;for instance,whentroubleoncearoseduringworkatacertainsettlementwhere cannibalswereengaged,aparcelof bananaleaveswasreceivedbyoneof theFathers.Itcontained-ahand. Thiswasjustawayofsayingthat therewastroubledownbelowand wouldthegoodFatherpleasecome .Indsettlethings!
Withoutcalendarsandclocks,the nativesareblissfullyunawareofthe dayoftheweek,soonSaturdayafternoonabellisrun.gattheMission,and thewordispassedaroundformiles that"to-morrowisMassday."Anotherwayofspreadingthegladtidings istocallintoashell,andthesound, waftedacrossthewater,ispickedup andthemessagecarriedthroughout theisland.Hundredsofduskylittle CatholicscrowdintotheMissionon theSunday,manyofthemcoming greatdistances.AtoneofthecolonieswherethereisquiteabigChinatown,thechildrenwalkinsomemiles everydaymerelytosaytheirprayers inthechurch-or,rather"sing-song" (hemalltogether.
ThedistancebetweentheNIissiun Stationscompelsthetravellertowalk throughmudandthickjunglecountry,encounteringfliesandAllmanner oftropicalpests,thencealongmountaintracksandthroughcountryof gloriousscenery.Hewillalsocome incontactwithavarietyoftribes.The KuniTribe,amostcut-throatlooking crowdtomeet,willgiveoneabigsurprisebytheirgreetingastheypass you-"AveMaria"!Asthereisno equivalentintheirlanguagetoour "goodmorning,"or"goodday,"they haveadoptedthismannerofgreeting, anditmustbedifficulttoimagineanythingmorebeautifulthantheexperienceofamissionerwhenhehearsthat forthefirsttimeinthosewilds.
Thereareresthousesatsomeof thesecross-trackswherethetraveller maystayovernightonsuchjourneys. Fellowmissionariesmaymeetforthe firsttimeandperhapsspeakadifferent language,buttheironenessofpurpose givestoeachagreatjoyattherealisationthat"Goye,therefore,teachall nations,"isresponsiblefortheirprese1Cinthisnoman'sland.
Wemightberudelysurprisedtosee anunspeedingalongonhorseback (withoutherumbrella),butthiswasa commonsight"upthere,"andthe modeoftravelfortheSistersbetween Stations.ThevariousOrdersaredo-
Atributewaspaidtothewonderful supportgiventotheMissionsbythe SocietyforthePropagationofthe Faith.Toomuchemphasiscannotbe placedonthenecessityforsupporting thisSociety.Themenandwomen whohavegoneintocountriestoteach thepaganthewayofChristandsufferedthehardshipsofpioneeringand hedistressesofmalariaandothertropicalplagues,needthepermanentinterestandhelpofthosewhoremain incivilisation.Medicalsuppliesand theinnumerablerequisiteswhichare inconstantdemand,mustbeforthcomingiftheMissionariesaretodothe greatworktowhichtheyhavededicatedtheirlives.Itisonlybyhearing ofthisworkthatitcanbefullyappreciatedandthepositionoftheCatholic Churchintheschemeofthingsgivesus reasontofeelproud.Thepartplayedinthedevelopment.bothmaterial andspiritual,ofthesepeopleisevidentbytheconductofthosenatives uponwhomourboyshadtodepend inNewGuinea.

Ifapersongoestoconfessionwith theintentionofcommittingsinwhen theoccasionarises,thenheistrulya hypocrite.Ifhegoestoconfession sayingheissorryforwhathedid whenallthetimehedoesn'tfeelthe slightestbitofremorseorregret,heis certainlyahypocrite.Itwouldbe farbetterforhimtostayaway.
Whenapersonsaysheknowshis weaknessesandstrongpointssufficientlywelltopredicthisreactionsunder certaincircumstancesheismakinga statementverydifficulttoprove.The mindofmanisaficklethingand,toa greatextent,itsreactionsareunpredictable.Manymodernsspendagreat dealoftimeandeffortstudyinghumanbehaviour.Sometherearewho attributeallouractionstocircumstanceswhicharebeyondthecontrol oftheindividual.Nowasalways thereisanattemptonthepartofcertainmentopushthatthingwhichwe callourwillintothebackground.
Whyhavesuchwordsascoward, quitter,slacker,beencoined?They carrywiththemtheideaofweakness ofthewill,orashirkingofmoralobligations.Intimeofwarthereisno personwhodoeshiscountrymore harmthanthedefeatist.Whoisthere whoadmiresthecoward?Whohas anysympathyforthemanwhowill notstandupandfightwhenitisclear. lyhisdutytodoso?Ontheother hand,everyoneadmiresagallantloser. Themanwhogoesdownfightingis worthyofmuchrespect.
Lifeisnotallpeachesandcream.In factitisacontinualwarfarewithno armisticeuntilthedaywhenwepass throughtheportalsofdeath.Attimes wemaybesubjectedtoaspiritualon. slaughtfullyastryingtooursoulsas thepresentblitzkriegsinEuropeare totheinhabitantsofthoseunfortunatenations.Thebigdifferenceinthis analogyisthatinspiritualwarfare rightmakesmightandwillprevail. Wemaybedefeatedinanynumberof battles,butitisthelastbattlethat counts.Andifweremainloyaltothe ArmyoftheChurchMilitantweshall neversufferultimatedefeat.
Weallhaveoursins,andnoone knowsforcertainthathewillsinno moreuntilhebreatheshislastbreath. Becausewehavebeensinningallduringourlifeandwillprobablysinin thefutureisnocausefordespair.I imagineeveryoneistemptedtodespairatonetimeoranotherduringhis lifewhenhelooksintohissoulandremembersthenumeroussinsthatbe hascommitted,andespeciallywhenhe looksatthefutureandfeelsthathis chancesofovercominghissinfulpracticesareexceedinglyslim.Yes,ifhe weretorelyonhisownstrengthhe wouldhavecausetodespair.
Butsuchisnotthecase.Aman withbutafaintsparkoffaithknows thathedoesnothavetofightalone. HeknowsthatbyturningtohisGod withsincereintentionhecangainthe necessarystrengthtocarryon.A manmaybebuffetedaboutbythe stormsofpassion,maybehurledagain andagaindownthesteepincline,but ifhewillpickhimselfupeachtime andstrikeoutoncemoreforthetop hewillnotbeatthebottomofthe pitwhennightcomes.
