Therecouldhenosocialharmony untilrichandpoor'weredrawntogetheragainandheldbythebondsofChristiancharity.Ifcovetousness, self-indulgence,egotismandprideof possessionhadledtherichtodespise thepoor,covetousness,self-indulgence, egotismandlackofpossessionshad ledthepoortohatetherich.Both richandpoorneededtoreturntoGod iftherewastobeanysolution.The riftmustberepaired,thegapbridged, notwidened,astheSocialisturged. ThesethemeshedevelopedinhisAdventSermonsatMainzCathedral.
AnalysingCommunismin1849,he sawthatitwasthesamespiritofthe world-thespiritofdisunionandof avarice-thatanimatedtheCommunists."Theydonotwanttogiveup whattheyhave,buttorobothersof whatbelongstothem theideaof thecommunityofgoodsspringsfrom thespiritofavarice."Andherepeats hischallenge:"Thegianttaskofour ageistofilluptheabyssthatdivides therichfromthepoor;andwoetous ifitisnotfilledup."

,NoquestionsareputtomemorefrequentlythanthoseconcerningtheproblemofGermanyouth-especiallyin thepost-waryears.Harassedby newsoftheconductofGermanyouth andbybooksdescribingtheNazieducationalsystem,manypeopledespair ofestablishingEuropeanpeaceandsecurityeventhoughtheyareconfident ofvictoryoverHitler, TheProblem.
Forexample,anAmericanfriend whohadjustreadGregorZiemer's "EducationforDeath,"wrotemerecently:"Eachyearproducesanew cropofyoungstersequallydetermined todieifnecessarythatNazismmay live.Tometheprospectisghastly; Iamnotafraidoflosingthiswar.But theGermanauthoritieshavesothoroughlyindoctrinatedGermanyouth thatIdonotseehowwecanever curethemoftheeducationtheyhave received.Assumingthatwewinthe warto-morrow-therewillstillbea generationofGermansdeterminedto avengethedefeatassoonastheyare strongenough.Inshort:'headds, "thoughthisisaconclusionfromwhich Ishrink,Ifranklydonotseehowwe caneversecurepeaceinEuropewithoutslaughteringtheentireyounger generationofGermans.Thisisarevoltingthought,andyetlogicallyI canseenoothersolution."

Iamnotsopessimisticasmy friend.Why?Firstofall,letus makeacleardistinctionintheagerate. goriesofGermanyouth.
(I)Thosemostcontaminatedby Nazidoctrineareyoungsterswhowere 8--I5whenHitlercametopower. A greatnumberofthisgroupwasthen enrolledinsomepartyorganisation suchastheHitleryouthortheS.A., andtheylookeduponHitler'sChancellorshipassomethingmorethana victory-itwastheconfirmationof theirhopesandideas.Theseyoungstersareto-day17--24,andundoubtedlytheypresentsomeverygraveproblems,towhichweshallreturn.
(2)Theoldergroupwhohadalmost completedtheireducationbeforeHitlerachievedpower.Inmanyinstancestheywerebroughtupinopposition toNazism,inastrictCatholicorSocialistorConservativeatmosphere,remainingmoreorlessimmunetothe neweducationalsystemwhichthey heldindisregard.
(3)Thegroupyounger,alsonotso irredeemablylosttoNazism.They haveknownnootherregime,andare thereforesubjecttothetendencyof everygenerationtorebelagainstthe statusquo-whichtothemistheNazi State.Thiswasoftenre-emphasised formeinconversationwithparents, whosaidthatyoungerchildren,startingtoschoolafterHitlercameto power,aremuchless"caught.'than theirolderbrothersandsisters,For youthmeansopposition!Andthetendency,therefore,wasformorewholeheartedespousalofHitlerismbyGermanyouthwhenitwasinopposition.
InfluencesonYouth.
Thereisageneralobservation.I feelthatthepointraisedbymyfriend intheUnitedStatesisbasedonan over-estimationofthepermanencyof schooleducationresults.Theschool isbutoneofthemajorcontributing factorsinachild'seducation-Besides it,therearethehome,theChurch, whatIshouldtermnaturalinstincts, andfinally,inGermanytheArmy. Thesefourinfluenceshaveplayedan importantpartintheeducationof Germanyouth,notsomuchfromthe pointofviewofaccumulatingknowledge-whichisthespecialfunctionof theschool-butinmouldingcharacter.
Admittedly,however,theseoverfacts havebeenovershadowedbyformal Nazieducationinitsmanyforms;such isoneofthepredominantcharacteristicsoftheregime,andoneoftheunderlyingreasonsforitssuccess.
Mygeneralobservationcannotdeny thattheyouthofGermanyhasbeen, and,subjecttotheabovequalifications, stillisinclinedtoacceptNationalSocialism.
Why?Not,obviously,becausehe reallydesiressuchthings-forhissole aimistheconstantincreaseofhisown power.Butheknowsthathewould losetheidealismofGermanyouth,if hedidnotspeaktothemintheirown languageandpointtotheirgoal.
HitlerhasmisledGermanyouth;he hasabusedandpervertedtheiridealism,andby(liemostskilfulpropagandaeverknown,hehasheldthem inignoranceofit.
Bearingallthisinmind,asolution oftheproblemofGermanyouthdoes notseemsoimpossible "LostBattalion."
Inthefirstplace,apars-andnota smallpart-oftherisinggeneration willdieonHitler'schosenbattlefields. Thusthe"onlylogicalsolution,"to whichmyAmericanfriendpointed, willbebroughtaboutinthecourseof events.Itisnonethelessghastly thatway,buttheresponsibilityisHitler's-oneforwhichhewillhaveto answerbeforetheJudgmentBar.
Others-inmyopinionagroupsmallerthanthefirstandthethird-can never,oronlythroughalongdisciplinaryprogress,bebroughtbackto normalcivilisedlife,
Icallthemthe"lostbattalions"of Germanyouth.Theymustbeprovidedwiththeopportunityoflearning inapracticalwaynotonlythatitis notright,butthatitdoesnotpay,to destroy.Theymustbegroupedin labourregimentswhichwillbeloaned outtothedevastatedcountriesSi,Pn-
land,Czechoslovakia,Norway,etc.),to helpinthepost-warrehabilitation. Thustheywillbeforcedtobuildwhat theyhavedestroyed.
PlannedRe-Education.
Finally,amajorityoftheGerman youthwillfindtheirwaybacktonormallife,whenthosewhohavemisled themhavebeenremoved,andonce againtheyarepermitted-andhelped -toseethingsaright.Toachieve thistherewillhavetobeanextensive re-education.
Intheinevitableperiodofdisillusionmentwhichaccompaniesandfollowsdefeat.Germanyouthmustbe providedwiththetruthwhichhaslong beenwithheldfromthem.Theline betweenfanaticallove,suchasthey haveheldforHitler,andbitterhatred, isverythinlydrawn,andifthisperiodofre-educationisskilfullyplanned, and,ofcourse,conductedbyfellowGermans,theywillturnfromthose whomtheyhaveblindlyfollowed,
Thecertaintyoftheirdoingsowill bethegreaterif,atthesametime, theyareprovidedwithanalternative -someassurancethatthereisawholesomeoutletfortheiridealism,some hopetorenewtheircourage.
Thisalternativecanbenobetterdescribedthan"ChristianSocialism"-de. dicatedtothebuildingofamodernisedandfederaliseddemocracyinGermany,andtoaninternationalcooperation,throughafederationofEuropeandarenewedLeagueofNations.
Backofitwillbeaneweducation, notfordeath,butforlife
formnow.
Thisdoesnotnecessarilymeanthat theyareNazis,asthattermisgenerallyunderstood.Iwouldevengoso farastosaythattheyhavefollowed Hitlerinthebeliefthathewouldrealiseforthemtruenationalsocialism, andthattheywillcontinuetodoso onlysolongastheybelievethathe isstrivingforaneworder,politically, economicallyandinternationally.

Thestruggleinthatcountryisbeing carriedonbythe"Chetnik"leader, Mikhailovitch,whoactsinthename ofKingPeterII.Alltheconfused talkabout"partisans"referstothe Sovietisedgroupofguerillas,which, whatevertheircontributiontothe successoftherevolt,arecertainly hamperingthestrugglebydisunion.
Whatisinterestingaboutthewhole affairisthatoncemore,asinthe SpanishCivilWar,theRedelement isajumpaheadinpropaganda,and bymeansoftheradio,hassucceeded incapturingtheearoftheworld's press,andwiththeirgrandiosetitle ofthePeople'sArmyofLiberationare makingabidfortheworld'ssympathy.
IftheCommunistsinYugoslavia and inAustraliawere"backingtheattack"wholeheartedlyandfromdisinterestedmotives,theywouldheedthe adviceofKingPeteranddroptheir sectionaldifferencesandgetdownto thejobinhand.
ThisYugoslavianaffairservesalsoto illustratetheworkingsoftheCommunistmoralityofexpediency.During theSpanishCivilWartheywere inraucoussupportoftheRepublican Governmentonthegroundsthatit wasthelawfully-constitutedGovernmentofthecountry.Butthefact thatMikhailovitchholdshiscommandfromthelawfulrulerofYugoslaviacutsnoicewiththematall. Thistimetheyareopenlyontheside ofrebellion.Andsowellorganised anddistributedistheirpropaganda thattheywillprobablysucceedin "puttingitacross."Butonewonderswherethemoneyiscomingfrom ifthedissolutionoftheCominternis tohetakenatitsfacevalue
Noinstitutioncouldpossiblybe moretenaciouslyopposedtoantiSemitismthantheCatholicChurch, fortoHertheissueisnotoneofsentimentalityormerebenevolence.These

AndCatholicsmaybereliedonto makesuchresearcheswiththeutmost sympathy,forthehistoryoftheir Churchisalsooneofpersecutionand misunderstanding,asitsFounderpromised.
NeitherdoesCharityforbidgovernmentstorestrainthefinancialandeconomicactivitiesofJewsorofany othersectionalinterestsiftheseactivitiesclearlymilitateagainstthecommongood.Forjusticeisavirtuein itsownrightaswellascharity.
Thispre-ambleisbywayofenquiry whytheworldpressmakessucha songanddanceovertheslaughterand oppressionoftheJews,whilequiteignoringthefactthatotherpeoplehave sufferedequally,ifnotmore.Have theJewsenduredmorethanthePoles, theGreeksandtheFrench?Such lop-sidedpublicitycanintheendonly militateagainstthecauseofJewry.
Asimilardisproportionisobser* ableincurrentdiscussionsofAustralia'spostwarimmigrationpolicies.No planhasreceivedmorepublicityand moreill-consideredsupportthanDr. Steinberg'sproposaltoestablishaJewishsettlementintheNorth-Westof thisStateinthevicinityoftheOrd River.
Onecouldhaveunderstoodthe wholesaleenthusiasmhadtheJewish FreelandLeagueforTerritorialColonisationthroughDr.Steinberghad someschemetooffer.But,asour contemporary,"TheWestAustraliae admits:"Dr.Steinberg'splanswere anythingbutconcrete."
TheFederalGovernmenthas,very wiselyitseemstome,deferredconsiderationofthenebulousproposals untilafterthewar.Yetthepress continuestourgealmostpreferential treatmentfortheJews.Icannot subscribetothisview.Inthefirst place,Australiadoesnotwantthesettlementofforeignersenbloc.Queenslandhasalreadyshownustheunhappyconsequencesofsuchapolicy, andtherearesimilarfesteringspotsin thisState.
MundaringChurch ClearedofDebt
Saturdaylastprovedared-letterday fortheCatholiccommunityatMundaring,when,astheresultofavery successfuldanceheldatthelocalhall, itwasannouncedthattheirpretty littlechurchinCoolgardie-street,was atlastfreeofdebt.Thesmallband ofCatholicshasworkedhardto bringaboutthisresult,andareto heartilycongratulatedontheirachievement.ThefunctiononSaturdaynight wasorganisedbyMrs.GHilton,who, withabandofwillingworkers,leftno stoneunturnedtoattaintheobjective aimedat,andtheyweresuccessfulbeyondtheirmostsanguineexpectations. Perhapsoneofthelargestcrowdsyet seenintheMundaringHallwasinattendance.andtothestrainsofdelightfulmusicsuppliedbyMrs.Troyand herdanceband,enjoyedthemselves thoroughlywithdancing,interspersed withafewvocalitems,untilthemidnighthour.Mr.C.Hiltonproveda veryefficientM.C.,andwasresponsible innosmallmannerforthesmoothand perfectrunningofthefunction.A wordofpraiseisduetotheladieswho gavesomuchoftheirtimeincatering forthesumptuoussupper,whichwas suppliedinabundance,andmuchappreciatedbyall.
ItwaspleasingtoseeMr.Frank O'Connor,thelocalChurchSecretary, amongthegathering.Frankhasjust recoveredfromaveryseriousillness, andperhapsnoonewasprouderthan hewhentheresultofthedancewas madeknownandthechurchforwhich
hehasgivensomuchofhistimeand talentwasatlastfreeofdebt.
Anothertowhomtheclearingofthe debtwasasourceofgreatpleasure, wasMrs.Reddy,whodonatedthe landonwhichthechurchiserected. Mrs.Reddyisthesacristanofthe church,andistobehighlycommended ontheveryexcellentmannerinwhich shecarriesoutherdutiesatalltimes.

ThefunctionoftheStateistoseethat thedutyofparentsisperformedand thattherightofparentsissafeguarded.TheunitoftheStateisthefamilyandtheStatehasnorightsthat candenyortakeawaythenatural familyrights.Ineducation,itisthe State'sdutytosupplythemeansthat arenecessarytoassisttheparentsin fulfillingtheircharge,asitisobvious thattheparentscannotthemselves normallycarrythroughthescholastic course.Thenecessarymeansare schools,equipmentandteachers.These theStateshouldprovide,butsoas todotheparents'work.Theteachers,therefore,aredelegatesoftheparentsandasabodyhavenorightsor dutiesinthematterapartfromtheir vocationasservantsoftheparents; theycertainlydonotformsomeindependent,sovereigndepartmentwitha rightofeducatingachild,apartfrom theprimaryandnaturalrightofthe parents,

SomeyearsafterwardshewashonouredwiththedistinctionofMonsignorandappointedVicar-Generalof theDioceseofAuckland.In1916he succeededthelateDrGrimesasBishopofChristchurch.

TheexistenceofastateofwarlendstheFeastofChristthe Kinganaddedsignificance.Fortheworldisatwarprecisely becauseithasrejectedtheuniversalsovereigntyofChrist,not overtlybyrebellion,butnonethelessculpablybyindifferentism, secularism,andignorance.OnenationatleasthasformallydisavowedGod,whileothers,inonewayoranother,persecuteHim throughHisChurch.Neverbeforeinhistoryhastherebeen suchopencontemptandviolationofthepledgedwordandofinternationallaw.IntheagesofFaiththerewereindeedwarsofconquestandofoppression-butnonewereundertakeninthe nameofmightAlwayssomeattemptwasmadetoestablisha moralcaseandthiswassobecausethemorallawandtheChristainfaithenjoyeduniversalacceptance.Tacitlyatleast.Christ wasKing.

Thatsecularismwhichisthebasisofthemodernworld'sdenialofChrist'sKingshipderivesfromtheReformation.TheAct ofSupremacybywhichHenryVIIIarrogatedtohimselfthe spiritualauthorityofthePope.wasthefirstgreatimpulseandthe prototypeofsecularism.Itisthefountain-headofthemyriad socialevilsofto-day.TherestorationofChristasKingtothe nationsandthere-establishmentofthereignofjusticeandcharity canhebroughtaboutonlybytheCatholicChurch,foritaloneis stronginitsDivinecommissiontoteachwithauthority,italone controlsthelife-givingSacraments,italonehasaHeadwhose authoritymillionsacknowledgewithoutquestion.Catholicsitnis thesapofsociety.ButChristwillnotreigninsocietyatlarge untilthefamilyandtheindividualcomeinfealtytoHint.And Christmustreign.Heisthetouchstoneoftheworld.Ifmen trustHimHewillbetheirfriendaswellastheirLordandMaster;iftheyresistHimtheywillbebroken.ForHeistruly theKingofAges.

MeanwhiletheChurchintheMissionsistheChurchSuffering.Missionarylives,missionarypropertyhave beenlistedintheghastlydebrisofwar. Ruin,privation,anddeathhavevisited theIslandMissions.Itisasaddening thought.
To-day,Iesteemitaprivilegeindeed toaddress,atthekindinvitationof yourDiocesanDirector,you,thepromotersandmembersoftheSocietyof thePropagationoftheFaith.That greatPontiffoftheMissions,PiusXI, describedyourSocietyas"trulythe chiefofmissionaryorganisations."I knowofyourdevotedandunselfish workhereinWesternAustralia.You havehadthezealofyourDirectorto encourageyou;thegenerousleadership ofyourArchbishopandthemissionary spiritofyourprieststourgeyouto greatereffortsinthecauseoftheMissionsInrecentyearsAustraliahas builtupadorganisationofwhichevery Catholicmay(wellfeelproud.The workundertakenbytheSocietywithin theCommonwealth,aswellasoutside ofit,particularlyunderthestressof war,istrulymagnificent.MembershipofthePropagationoftheFaithin thiscountryhasrisensincetheoutbreakofwarfromunder100,000towell overaquarterofamillion;thefinancialreturnshavebeentrebled;practicallyeverychildattendingaCatholic schoolinAustraliaisamemberofthe HolyChildhood.ThankGod,themissionaryspirithascometostaywith ourgoodCatholicpeople,andasa missionarymyself,Iamproudtobe associatedwithyouontheoccasionof yourannualrally;tothankyouon behalfofthemissionarieswhocannot dosothemselves,toencourageyou,if Ican,togooninyourgrandcrusade forChrist.
SometwelveyearsagoIsteppedoff thesteameratPortMoresby-Ihad reachedatlastmygoal-thePapuan Mission.IwashappyintheknowledgethatIwasabouttojointhestaff ofthatsaintlyMissionaryoftheSacredHeart,BishopdeBoismenu,the VicarApostolicofPapua.Itisnow forty-threeyearssincehebecamea Bishop,andhehasremainedatthe helmoftheMissionseversince-hisunwaveringmotto,"CognoscantTe""thattheymayknowThee."And thatiswhyIhaveselectedto-daythe quotationalreadygivenyou,foritwas fromBishopdeBoismenuthatIlearnt thefullmeaningofthatbeautifulprayer,"thattheymayknowThee,theonly trueGodandJesusChristWhomThou hastsent."Yes,hewasaninspiration tomeashehasbeentosomanyof hismissionariesdownthroughthe years.Howoften,particularlywhen difficultiesweregreat,didthosewords inspiremetogreatereffortinthe causeofOurLord.
FromBishopdeBoismenuIhadmy firstinsightintothegrandworkofthe PropagationoftheFaiththroughout theCatholicworld,andmoreparticularly-initsrelationshiptothePapuan Mission.OnedayatYuleIsland,the HeadquartersoftheMission,some60 mileswestofPortMoresby,Ifound theBishoppreparinghisannualreportfortheCongregationofPropagandainRome.Helaidasidehis penandbegantoexplaintomejust howdependentwastheMissiononthe annualdistributionoffunds."Soon," hesaid,"wehopetoreceiveournew allocationtohelpuscarryonfor anotheryear.ThankGodforthenoble bandofworkersthroughouttheworld whopraydailyfortheMissionsand assistinapracticalmannerourwork.
AfewdaysearlierIhadreturned fromalongtouroftheMissionstations oftheinterior-fromtheMekeoPlain totheOwenStanleyRange.Ihad seenformyselfthosevaliantPriests, BrothersandSisterslabouringamonggt thenativetribesofplainandmountain.Stationshadbeenhewnout ofthejungle.Overtheyearssolid buildingshadreplacedthenativestructureswhicharealwaysafeatureofa Missionstationinitsearlystages.I hadseenthenativecongregationsassembledfortheirSundayMass.At thecallofthechurchbelltheycamein theirhundredsfrommountaincragor fromthedepthsofthekunaigrassto payhomagetotheGodtheyhad learnedtoloveandadore.Ihadseen theflourishingnativeschoolspresided overbythegoodSisters;thenative catechistsmakingtheirannualRetreat:theCongregationofnativeSisters-"HandmaidsoftheLord"they werecalled.InafteryearsIwasto seeanativepriest-yesanativePapuan-workingamongsthisownpeople. OneverystationIsawthewonderful medicalworkthatwasbeingcarried out-medical.worksonecessary,soconstant,inatropicalcountry.Yes,I hadseentheMissions"inaction."But oftenduringthattripIhadmarvelled thatsuchprogresscouldhavebeen possible.NowIunderstand,andI hopethatyouunderstand,whatit meanstotheMissionariestohavethe suppportoftheSocietywhichyourepresentto-day. LaterontheBishopsentmetobeginthenewMissionofEasternPapua. NoCatholicMissionexistedinthisvast area,anditwasthewishoftheHoly SeethattheAustralianProvinceof theMissionariesoftheSacredHeart shouldestablishtheChurchthere. Sincethiswarbeganyouhaveheard ofnameslikeBuna,Sanananda,Semaru,MilneBay,WoodlarkIsland,and theTrobriandIslands.Tenyearsago weMissionariesdidnotdreamthatthe
daywascomingwhenourownAustralianboyswouldhavetofightanddie inplaceslikeMilneBayandBuna.It wasin1933thattheFaithcameto MilneBay.anduptotheoutbreakof hostilitiesinthatarea,Australian priestsandSisterslabouredsuccessfully there.Thefuturewasfullofpromise fortheyoungMission,but,alas!for thedepthofhumandepravity-war cameinallitsfurytoEasternPapua. MilneBaymuststartafresh,butit willriseagainonthesamefoundationsTheyhavebeenfirmlylaid.
TenyearsagolifeinEasternPapua washard-beginningsarealwayslike that.Difficultiesmountedup-we weresorelytriedmanytimes,butour belovedBishop,withfatherlysolicitude, urgeduseveronwards.OurLord blessed,asHealwaysdoes,a"workbegunatthecommandofHisVicaron earth.Howoftenwefeltthepower ofprayerhelpingandencouraging us assickness,feversandthelamented deathofoneofouryoungpriests threatenedtoholdusback.Andso theMissionsmaderapid,strides.Soon morepriestscame:Sisterswereestablishedintheroughbuildingswedared tocallconvents:LayBrothersworked noblyatthemanynecessaryoccupationsfoundforthem.Faithfulfriends oftheMissionsinAustraliawerea towerofstrengthtous,andwewill everblesstheirnamesandmemory. But,inallsincerity,Isaytoyoutoday,thatthePropagationoftheFaith -theofficialSocietyoftheChurchstoodoutinallitsstrengthinthose difficultyears.Truetheamountof helpavailableatthattimewaspitifullysmallandoverseasexchangecut toribbonsourallocation,butthathelp wassureandcertain-itwasofficial. To-day,theAustralianMissionsofEasternPapuahasitshonouredplaceon thelistofAustraliansMissionscared fordirectlyfromAustralia.This, thankstotheflourishingconditionof theSocietyinournativeland.
