Q.:"Whatdoyouthinkof"TheSocialistSixth,"bytheDeanofCanterbury?Yourcommentswouldbe appreciated.

A.:Obviouslythereisnotimeina sessionlikethistogiveanexhaustive commentaryonthisclericalmasterpiece.SufficeittosaythattheDean isnotcomyetenttodiscusseitherChristianityorCommunism.HeisnotcompetenttodiscussChristianity:forhis hazymodernisticviewsasexpressed inthebookareflatlyopposedtothe mostfundamentalteachingsofChrist; andheisnotcompetenttodiscuss Communism:forhiscontentionthat Communismisnotreallymaterialistic orbynatureopposedtoreligionis flatlycontradictedbythefundamental philosophyofCommunismandthe foundersandleadersofCommunism. Apartfromthat, however, istheDean competenttodiscussmattersoffact, andinparticular,thepositionofreliligtoninRussiato-day?

Wellnow,we'llsee-I'mtakingthe Deanuponthisonepointalone.

TheDeanadmitsthattherehasbeen persecution.Heclaimsthatitwas duetothedecadentandservileconditionoftheOrthodoxChurch;aplea whichisratherfutileinviewofthe -factthatCommunismisbynatureopposedtoallreligion.Heclaimsthat persecutionhasgivenwaytoa"measureoftolerance"-that"itistotally untruetosaythatthepresent-daySovietUnionlacksreligiousfreedom." Yet,inthenextbreath,hetellsthat noorganisedreligiousinstructionmay begivenoutsidethefamilycircle.

Inotherwords,headmitsthatthe teachingofreligionisnotpermittedin anyState,publicorprivateinstitutioninwhichsecularsubjectsare taught.Heexplicitlyadmitsthat pressandradioareclosedtoreligion propaganda,Hedoesnotmention thefactthatallreligiousmarriageis abolished,togetherwithallreligious oathsandvows.

Article124ofthe"Democratic"constitutionwhichtheDeanquotesas proofofreliiousfreedom,allowspersonstherighttoperformreligious rites,butprohibitsallreligiouspropaganda.Sinceallreligiouspapersand bookscomeundertheheadingof"religiouspropaanda,"theyareforbidden inRussia.Inthelightofallthisand ofwhatIamgoingtosay,I'mafraid theArticleoftheConstitutionquoted bytheDeanasproofofreligiousfreedominRussia,givesbutahypocritical pretence.

TheDeanblandlyassuresus,amongstotherthings,thatthereare50,000 priestslivingto-dayintheSoviet -.Union.Headdsthattheyareasfree tovoteasanyothercitizen.Assumingforthemomentthathisfiguresare correct,theReverendRussophileforgetstomentionthat,liketherestof theRussianpeople,thepriestsarefree tovoteonlyformembersoftheCommunistParty,orpersonsapprovedby theParty.Hesaysnothingofany --otherfreedomtheymightpossessapart fromthefreedomtovoteforpre-selectedcandidates.Hedoesnotstate howmanyofthe50,000clergyarein prisonsorconcentrationcamps.

Butinanycase,aretheDean'sfigurescorrect?Whatarehissourcesof information?Firstofall,hisown experience;and,secondly,thetestimonyofanunnamed"RussianEmigre AbbotfromNewYork,"whovisited himin1937.Itwouldbeveryinterestingandvaluabletohavethename ofthisRussianEmigreAbbot-but hereagaintheDeanremainssilent.

UnfortunatelyfortheDean,hissilly statementsaboutthepositionofthe clergyinRussiaareflatlycontradictedbyauthoritativesources,bothRussian-OrthodoxandCatholic.Itmight interestmylistenerstocomparetheir statementswiththeseassurancesof HewlettJohnsoninhisownunique versionofthe"CanterburyTales."

RegardingtheRussian-Orthodoxreligion,anauthoritativecommentisfurnishedbythe"MemorandumonReligiousFreedomintheU.S.S.R.."which wasissuedattheendof1942bythe RussianAmericanNationalCommitteeoverthesignaturesofArchbishop Vitaly,BorisSergievskyandBoris Brasol,oftheRussianOrthodox Church.TheMemorandumstates:

"EversincetheBolsheviksassumed thereinsofpowerin1917theyhave been,andstillare,wagingacrueland relentlesswaragainstreligioningeneralandChristianreligioninparticular.TheSovietConstitutionof1918, whileprovidingforfreedomofreligiousandanti-religiouspropaganda(Article131,deprivedtheministersof Godofallcivicrightsandplacedthem inaclassalongwithcommonlaw criminals(clausesdandgofArticle 65.)

TheConstitutionof1924,verbatim reiteratedtheseprovisionsinArticles 4and69.respectively.However,Article4ofthe1929versionoftheConstitutionwasamendedasfollows:"For thepurposeofinsuringtotheworkersrealfreedomofconscience,the ChurchisseparatedfromtheState, andtheschoolfromtheChurch;libertyofreligiousconfessionsandof anti-religiouspropagandaisrecognisedtoallcitizens!'

Inthismannerthepeopleweredeprivedoftherighttoengageinreligious propaganda,foronlyanti-religiousprogandawaspermitted.Thus,the atheistgripovertheRussiannation wastightenedbytheSoviets.

Finally,theStalinConstitutionof 1936didnothingbutconfirmthefreedomofanti-religiouspropagandawithoutrestoring,orevenpretendingto restore,therightofthecitizenstodefendpubliclytheirreligiousidealsand aspirations.

Moreover,onthestrengthofArticle 122oftheSovietPenalCode,thegiving ofreligiousinstructioninschools, whetherStateorprivate,ispunished byforcedlabour;whileallschoolmastersarerequiredtoimparttothe childrenatheistteachings.Such,in brief,isthelegalstatusofreligion undertheexistingSovietlegislation."

AdvantagesofZamenhof'sSystem

(Contributed.)

The"WestAustralian"inarecent leaderonDr.C.K.Ogden'sBasicEnglish,stated"thatitwilldrawpublic attentiontothemosthopefulandhelpfulattemptevermadetosolvethe problemofaninternationallanguage." Suchastatementdoesnotindicate deepstudyoftheproblemofasecondarylanguage,northedifficultiesof overcomingit.

Itsimportanceandmagnitudecan letgaugedbythefactthat,duringthe lasttwohundredyears,150unsuccessfulattemptsweremadebyeminent scholarsandlinguiststoconstructsuch alanguage.Seemingly,also,itisyet tobelearnedthattwodidactually becomelivinginternationalauxiliary languages-Volapuk,createdbyaCatholicBishop,Dr.Schleyer,andEsperanto,broughttofruitionbyDr.LudovikoL.Zamenhof.

Valopuk,thefirstcompleted,possessedconsiderablemerit,andwaswellreceivedthroughoutEurope.

Thecomposition,however,ofitsroot wordvocabularyplacedsuchexcessive strainonthememory-andthetonic similarityoftheserootwords,i.e,,bap, pab,pap,peb,bob,pop,etc.,putan equallyseverestrainontheearthat, evenbeforetheappearanceofacompetitor,ithadfallenfromfavour. WhenDr.Zamenhof,someyearslater, gaveEsperantototheworld,Volapuk couldnotbeaccountedavirileopponent.

VerydifferentwasthefateofEsperanto,which,byitsmathematicalprecision,flexibility,richnessofexpressionandstrictregularityofitsgrammarandpronunciation,waswidelyacclaimedasafitmediumofintercommunication,evenbygreatnumbersof Volapukistswhoopenlytransferred theirallegiancetotheZamenhoflanguage.

ItwassoeasilylearnedthatLeono Tolstoy,towhomwassentagrammar, vocabulary,andsomemanuscripts, stated"thataftertwohours'perusal hecouldfreelyreadEsperanto."In 1907,atCambridge,anEsperantocongress,atwhich1,500personsfrom manyforeigncountriestookpart,was proclaimedbythepresstobeabrilliantsuccess.Amongstthosepresent wasafamousLatinist,Professor Mayor,who,afterhearingthevarious speeches,said"Weareseeinganew Pentecost."SoonafteritsbirthEsperantojournalssprangintobeing, richandoriginalliteratureconcerning science,history,poetryandtravels werewritten,andtranslationsofthe NewandOldTestamentandofthe

worksofShakespeare,Dante,Goethe, Moliere,Schiller,Gogot,Dickensand Chesterton,etc,,flowedfromthepress. InternationalcongressesweresuccessfullyconductedinmanyEuropeancountries.Therefore,afterfifty-six yearsofprogress,isitnotblinking factstostatethatBasicEnglishwill bethemosthopefulandhelpfulattemptevermadetosolvetheproblem ofaninternationallanguage?

ThePrimeMinisterofEngland, speakingattheAmericanUniversity ofHarvard,stressinganafter-the-war necessityofanewworldleague,hinted thatBasicEnglish,nowreceivingfrom acommitteeitsfinaltouches,wouldbe offeredasitslanguagemedium:and added,"thatwhatiswantedisalanguagewhichforeignerscaneasilylearn, asanauxiliarytongue,foruseindealingwithothernationsthantheirown."

BeholdweofferEsperanto!which hassubstantiateditsclaimforacceptancebytheinternationalcharacterof itsrootwords,byprefixesandsuffixes whichgivetoitsuchawondrousflexibilityandbyitspreciseanduniform pronunciation,testedinmanycountriesandhavingbeenwiththegreatestfacilitycomprehendedbyall.
