Patriotismdivorcedfrom Christianitymaybecome aprincipleofhatredand destruction.

ThefirstofaseriesofnationalbroadcastsonAustraliawasgivenbytheArchbishopofAdelaideonSunday,September12,underthe.auspicesoftheAustralianBroadcastingCommission.Dr.BeovichspokeoftheneedofChristianityasabasisofgoodcitizenship,andcontrastedtruepatriotismwiththe idolatrousformsofnationalismcurrentto-day.

"Indiscussingthevariousattributes that,inmyopinion,gotothemaking ofagoodAustralian,"saidhisGrace, "wecanfirstofallstateanobvious fact:ofthefourexistingcivilisations intheworld-European,Islamic,IndianandChinese-webelongtothat civilisationcalledEuropean.Itsbasis andtraditionsareChristian,sowe areheirstoacivilisationbuiltuplaboriouslythroughthecenturiesofthe ChurchwhichChristfoundedonearth. Wemustemphasiseourheritage,becauseinthiscenturyseveralfactorsin ournationallife,nottheleastbeing Statesystemsofseculareducation,not onlyarenothelpfulinmaintaining ourChristiantraditions,buttheyhave thecontraryeffect.

"Doyourememberthatmuch-quoted 'leader'inthe'LondonTimes'newspaperofthreeyearsagowhichwarned Englandthatinacountryprofessedly Christian,theyhadasystemofnationaleducationwhichallowedthe citizensofthefuturetohaveapurely heathenupbringing?Idonotknow whateffectthewarninghadinEngland,butourpositioninAustraliais nobetter,ifanythingitisworse,and thoughgenerationsofpeoplemaycontinuetobeinfluencedbyChristiantraditions,thosetraditionsbecomeatrophiedthroughinaction,sothatbydegreesmoreandmoreAustralianswill failtorealisethatcivilisationwithout anyunifyingspiritualforcewilltend tofallbackintosocialanarchy.Then menwillworkandthinkandagitate foraremodellingofsocietyaccording tosomeidealofsocialperfection.But itisretrogradeandfatalindeedtoregardasecularcivilisationasman's finaldestiny.Itisnomorepossible forsocietytolivebybreadalonethan itisfortheindividual.

PatriotismandNationalism.

"PatriotismisadutyandaChristianvirtuewhichinclinesamanto loveandservethecountrytowhichhe belongs.Itdiffersessentiallyfrom exaggeratednationalism.InChristian teachingdutiesofpatriotismcome afterreligiousobligations,andare,be sides,subjecttotheprinciplesofjusticeandcharity:forbytheChristian lawallmenarebrothersinOurDivine Saviour.Inthenon-Christianconcept ofpatriotismthereisatendencytoregardtheStateorthenationasthe highestobjectof-devotion,asifit wereanendinitselfandnotaninstitutionarrangedbyProvidencetoassist itsmemberstowardstheirtemporal andeternalhappiness.

"Thereisadangerousclassconflict inindustry.Therearefaultsonboth sides,buttheconflictismainlydue totheselfishnessofmany-thoughnot all-financialinterestsinrefusing,in thepresentaswellasinthepast,to securealivingfamilywagefortheir employees.Thisrefusalhascaused greathardshiptothousandsoffamilies. "Sisterwon'tknow,andwellbeback inalittlewhile.We'llhaveawalk roundthegarden."Angelawas "game."Thelatchwasliftedeverso slowlyandcarefully,andtwolittle formswalkedarminarmdownthe pathleadingtothegarden.Flutteringleaves,thehootofanowl,thecry ofalonelyjackal,andthesuddenrustlinginthezinnia-bedbrought"no stoppingofbreath"and"missedheartbeats"tothese12-year-oldlassieswho werebornandcradledinthejungle.

Thegirlsneedednosecondtelling: theywereoffinalldirections.Two bearsbrokecoverandmadeforthe nearestgroupofgirls.Aten-year-old lassiewasknockeddownbyoneofthe bears,butshemanagedtowrigglebetweenthehindlegsoftheanimaland thussaveherself.Anothergirlwas chasedandinherexcitementshetrippedandfellunconscious.Thebear trampledonherandmovedonafter someothergirls.BearNo,2hadtak. enupthechase,andwasafew' yardsbehindagroupofbiggergirls. ItistruethatwhentheFrench GrandOrientinSeptember,1878, erasedfromtheirConstitutionsthe paragraphsreferringtotheexistence ofGod,whichhadbeenassertedin 1849,theBritishandIrishMasonsdisapprovedoftheiractionandpasseda motionrequiringfromvisitingbrethrenbelongingtotheFrenchGrand Orientanexplicitprofessionofbelief inthe"GrandArchitectoftheUniverse"asaconditionofadmissioninto theirLodges.Butthisdisapproval wassoveryvagueandequivocalasto bedevoidofallrealeffect.Itcertainlydidnotrepresenttheseverance offraternalrelations.

ThereturnoftheLabourGovernmenttoofficebyanoverwhelmingmajoritymeansthatitwillhavetheresponsibilityofinauguratingpoliciesuponwhichthewholestabilityofthepostwarperiodinAustraliawilldepend.Ithasreceivedaverydecisivemandatefromthepeople,notsomuchfortheimplementationofitssectionalpoliticalinterestsasforsoundgovernmentin thecommoninterest.Duringthecriticalwarperioditwasprobablynecessarytohaveastrongpolicyofcentralisationwithits inevitabletailofboardsand"controllers.'Buttoenvisageapermanentpeace-time"set-up"ontheselineswouldbedestructiveof thelibertieswhichweembarkeduponwartopreserve.Ifatotalitarianregimeineconomicandpoliticallifeistoheaverted,thefundamentalprincipleofactionshouldbetoensurethemostcomplete personallibertyforallAustraliansconsistentwiththecommon good.

Itwould,however,befollytoattemptescapingtheissuethat theFederalGovernmentisseekingtoaugmentitspowersatthe expenseoftheStatesonthepleaofeffectivepost-warorganisation.Alreadyithasthetaxingpower,albeitwithatime-limiton itsexercise.Itnowseeksauthorityovertheemploymentof labour,andsuggestionsareclamorousfortheFederalcontrolof education.Thisrepresentsatrendfraughtwithperil,firstlybecauseitendangersthepoliticalconceptionoftheConstitutionin reducingtheStatelegislaturestothestatusofpuppetgovernments,and,secondly,becausethepoliticalandeconomicfreedomof thecommonmanisincreasinglyvestedinamoredistantandimpersonaladministration.Torecognisethisfactisnottosuspect theintentionsofthepresentFederalGovernment,butitisclear thatsuchaconcentrationofpoliticalpowerisaspotentialof tyrannyasthepasteconomic"set-up"ofCapitalismwasofexploitationandchaos.

Thesolutionofthisproblem,asofthesocialquestionas'a whole,shouldbesoughtalongthelinesofdecentralisation.The importantpartthatcanbeplayedbylocalgovernmentinthe nationallifehasnotyetbeenrecognisedinAustralia.Thechief advantageofamunicipalsystemwithwiderpowers,suchas operatesinBritain,isthatitwouldrelieveboththeStateand Federallegislaturesofmuchoftheirpresentadministration.If mattersofpurelylocalconcernweresolvedonthespotbyrepresentativesofthepeoplemostvitallyconcerneditwouldleave thecentralgoverningpowersfreetoconcentrateonthegreat nationalproblemsandmattersofhighstatecraft.Andifthe functionsofcentralgovernmentwerethuscircumscribedthepeopleofAustraliacouldaffordgreatlytostrengthentheauthorityof thecentralexecutivewithoutthefearoftyranny.

The"PatternforPeace"whichwaspresentedtotheFederal GovernmentonbehalfoftheCatholiccommunityenvisagesa dualityofthissortbothintheeconomicandpoliticalarangements ofthefuture.ThehierarchicalnatureoftheIndustrialCouncils, builtupfrombelowfromthelocaltotheregionalCouncilsand culminatingintheNationalCouncil,willtendatoncetorelieve Governmentalpre-occupationwithindustrialmatters(exceptina generalsupervisorycapacity),andwillcurbtheanarchicliberalismoftheoldregimeItrepresentsarationalcontrolwithout theoppression,impersonalityandinefficiencyofbureaucraticdomination.Andsidebyside.withthisfunctionalarrangementof theeconomiclifeofthenationshouldgotheschemeofregionalismwhichagaintiesupwiththeplansforthedevolutionofindustrialismandthestabilisationofagriculture.Thedove-tailingof thepoliticalandeconomicarrangementiswhatmakestheCatholic proposalsocogentandcompelling.Wearedefinitelynotinterestedinanypiece-mealschemewherethepartisstressedtothe distortionofthewhrs!.Wehavetriedtoseetheproblemasa largecanvasonwhich,asthefinedetailispaintedin,willappear thepictureofanew,greatAustraliaorderedalongrationalconceptionsofatrueorganicandfunctionaldemocracy.

Bray'swords:"FatherThomaswasan excellenttypeofsuperintendent,"becausetheyfoundinhimnotonlya capablesuperintendentbutalsoalovingfatherwhohadlinkedhishappinesswith theirs.

Nottheleastproofofthiswashis wisegestureinhavingtheBenedictine SistersofNewNorciaintroducedinto theMission.Thesick,thechildren, andthewomenfolkreceivedsincethe Sisterscame.in1931,tothetimeof theirtemporarywithdrawallatelast year,acareandattentionwhichthey hadneverexpected.

Wecangaugethedepthofthesorrowintowhichthedeath,suddenand tragic,ofFatherThomashasplunged thesepoorcreatures.Theircrieswill nodoubtbeheardbytheAlmighty. and,togetherwithourprayers,will obtainforthelateFatherwhatweso earnestlywish,that"perpetuallight mayshineuponhim,"andthathe "mayrestinpeace."

Itwaswithfeelingsofconsternation thatonThursday,30th.ult.,theBenedictineCommunityofNewNorciareceivedthesadnewsofthetragicdeath ofVeryRev.FatherThomasGil,SuperioroftheDrysdaleRiverMission. Thoughnodetailsofthetragedywere supplied,itwasenoughtoknowthat hehadfallenavictimtothestrafing oftheMissionbytheJapaneseinthe earlyhoursofMonday.Infact,the absenceofmoredetailedinformation onlyaddedpoignancytothesorrow causedbythebriefcommunicationtelephonedtoHisLordshiptheAbbotby theR.A.A.F.authorities,TheintelligencereceivedonWednesdayofthe bombingandstrafingoftheDrysdale RiverMissiongaverisetothegloomiestforebodingsatNewNorcia.The worstwasfearedfromthefirstmoment, andtheworsthadreallyhappened-the zealous,energetic,well-belovedyoung SuperioroftheMissionwasamongthe unfortunatecasualties!Thesuddennessofthefataloccurrenceandthe greatdistancethatseparatestheDrys- 'daleRiverMissionfromNewNorcia madeithardtobelievethatthehead oftheMissionhadbeencutoffinhis prime.But,unfortunately,suchwas thecase.Oneandthesamewasthe expressionofgriefandappreciation thatfellfromthelipsofallhisconfreresastheyheardthatFather Thomaswasdead.Manyafervent prayerhasbeenofferedupforthereposeofhissoul,andaSolemnRequiem Masswascelebratedinthepro-CathedralatNewNorciaonFridaymorning.Needlesstosay,notasingleseat wasleftvacantonthatoccasion,the CollegesandOrphanagesandtherest oftheNewNorciapopulationfilling thesacrededificetocapacity.Father Boniface,formanyyearsacompanion ofthedeceasedintheDrysdaleRiver Mission,wasthecelebrantoftheMass. FathersPaulandJosephwereDeacon andSub-Deacon,respectively.

ThelateFatherThomaswasbornon December28,1898,atCorella,inthe provinceofNavarre,inSpain.Atthe ageoftwelveheenteredthemonastic CollegeorJuniorateatMontserrat,as acandidatefortheNewNorciaMission.

Sixyearslater-alreadyaprofessed Benedictine-hecametoAustralia.A brilliantstudent,DomThomasreada verysuccessfulcourseofPhilosophy andTheologyatNewNorcia,andatSt. Patrick'sSeminary,Manly,N.S.W.At

Twoyearshereservedthepurpose ofanapprenticeshipinmissionarylife, and,whentheinvitationcameto launchintothedeepinhisworkfor thenatives,hewentgladlytothe DrysdaleRiverMission,Hisonlyobjectionwashisappointmenttothe directorshipoftheMission.Itwas, however,asSuperiorthathemustgo. lietookchargeofhisofficeinApril, 1926,andhelditwithsingularability andtogeneralsatisfactionuntilthe dayofhisuntimelydeath.

Hisworkasamissionarywasvery fittinglysummedupbytheCommissionerofNativeAffairs(Mr.F.I. Bray),whenhestatedthatthelate FatherThomas'"wholelifewasdevoted totheserviceofthenatives.Hehad nootherdesirebuttoservethem."

HisLordshiptheAbbotofNewNorcia,inthecourseofanaddresstohis Community,declaredthatifhewereallowedtoprobetheinscrutablewaysof DivineProvidence,hefelthewouldfind thatourlatelamentedFatherThomas hadbeentakenfromourmidstsosoon becausehehadalreadyearnedhis eternalreward.Hisseventeenyears amongtheaborignesoftheDrysdale Riverhadrevealedafaithandzealfor thesalvationofsoulsthatmusthave beenverypleasingtotheAlmighty whohad,onthataccount,hastenedto remunerateHisfaithfulservant,All hisco-workersintheMissionfieldare perfectlyagreedintheirpraisesof theirenthusiasticyoungSuperior.He hadnotbeenlongintheMissionwhen theplacetookonanewaspect.Buildingactivities,towhichhisownzestand skilladdednewvigour,resultedinthe creationofanidealMissionvillage. ThiswasatPago,bythesea.Droughts andconstantlyrecurringpests,however,madeitnecessaryafewyears latertolookforalocalitywhere,at least,therewasaconstantsupplyof water,Hefounditin1932,somesixteenmilestotheS.W.ofPago,onthe banksoftheKingEdwardRiver.To thenativesthislocalitywasknownas "Caloombooroo."Heresprangupin averyshorttimeanotherMissionvillage-areplicaofPago.Itsprospects weremuchbrighterthanatthelatter place,andFatherThomasdecidedon furnishingthenewMissionbranch withsoldidmeant-to-lastbuildings.The firstofthesewastheMonastery,or residenceofthemonks,which,accordingtoallreportsis(orwas)agem, andwasbuiltin1937.Otherswould followinduetime.Butthewarcame.

FatherThomas'deepinterestinthe materialwelfareofmissionariesand nativeswasonlyanindextohisstill greaterinterestinthespiritualprogressoftheMission.Inthemidst ofhismultipleoccupationshefound thetimeforacomprehensivestudyof thenativelanguage,orlanguages,of thedistrict,Fruitofhistirelessactivityare:"AConciseCatechism,""A ShortLifeofOurLord,"and"ACollectionofShortAddressesforthePrin-
