THEORIGINOFMAN.
Atthebeginningofthelastsection, itwasnotedthatthetheory ofevolutionascommonlyunderstooddoesnotexcludeman.Probablynootherscientificspeculations havereceivedsuchpublicityasthose dealingwithman'sorigin.Certainly noothershavebeensomisrepresented bywritersofpopularscience,andeven bysomewould-bescientists.Theories andassumptionshavebeenputforwarddogmaticallyasestablishedfacts; non-existentevidencehasbeeninvented.
Theargumentsproposedinsupport ofthehypothesisthatmanhasevolvedfromnon-humanancestorsfall roughlyintothreegroups:1,TheZoological;2,ThePalaeontological;3.The Psychological.
1.Thefirstandmostobviousargumentisbasedonthesimilarityinbodilystructurebetweenmanandcertain animals,calledingeneralanthropoid.

Dr.ArnoldBrassaccusedHaeckel ofhavingdeliberatelyfalsifiedmany diagramsinhiswork,"DasMenschen Problem."TothisIIaeckelrepliedin "MunchnerAllgemeineZeitung,'1909: "Toputanendtothisunsavourydispute,Ibeginatoncewiththecontrite confessionthatasmallnumberofmy embyrodiagramsarereallyforgeriesin Dr.Brass'ssense,those,namely,for whichtheobservedmaterialissoincompleteorinsufficientastocompel ustofillinandreconstructthemissinglinksbyhypothesisandcomparativesynthesis.Ishouldfeelutterly condemned.andannihilatedbytheadmissionwereitnotthathundredsof thebestobserversandmostreputable biologistslieunderthesamecharge. Thepresenceofrudimentaryorgans isconsideredstrongevidenceofman's descentfromancestorsinwhichthey hadause.Thisdoesnotprove,however,thattheseancestorswerenot men:andbesidesitis'dangerousto callanythingarudimentaryorgan %%henmedicineisfindingthatmany organsareusefulwhichwereonceconsideredrudimentary.
2.Thepalaeontologicalargumentis probablythebestknownofallargumentsbroughtforwardtoproveman's evolution,Itisalittledifficulttostate inafewwords,butitrunssomething likethis.Wemaysafelyassume thatwerethegeologicalrecordcompleteweshouldfindachainoffossils connectingmanwithasub-humanancestor,andwearejustifiedinmaking thisassumptionbytheisolatedlinks inthechainwhichhavealreadybeen discovered.Nowletusexaminethese supposedlinks.

Hedid.In1894hereturnedwithhis "pithecanthropus,"whichconsistedof askullcapofchimpanzeetypewithno foreheadandbeetlingbrows,twomolar teethandadiseasedthighboneofhumantype.Nosysincethethighbone wasfound50feetawayfromtheskull capandoneoftheteeth,andtheother tooth13feetfromthethighbone,it isverydoubtfuliftheyallformpart ofthesamecreature.Butlittle thingslikethatdon'tworryanevolutionist.TheotherdayIfound,ina bookIwasreading,averynicepictureofthecreature,asifhehaddroppedinthedaybeforeandhadhis photographtaken.Itisinterestingto notethatthedoctorremovedfromthe samespotthefossilsof27different kindsofanimals,sohehadplentyto choosefrom.
In1896,Dr.Dubois,givinganaddresstotheBerlinAnthropologicalSociety.statedthatinothersituations inthesamestratumhehadfoundfossilremainsofagiganticant-eaterand ofhippopotamus,buthedidnottell themthatin1890hehadfoundafossil skullofAustralianblacktype.That wouldneverdo.Finally,in1938,Dr. Duboisannouncedthatafterprolong- edstudyofanthropologicaltextbooks, ofthePithecanthropusbones,and"of materialfromthesameprovinceinhis possessions,forthemostpartnotpreviouslypublished,"hewasoftheopinionthatwearehereconcernedwitha giganticgibbon."

AsaCatholichewasmostedifying, beingamemberoftheHolyNameSocietyandaparticularlyregularrecipientoftheSacraments.Nordidhe lapsewhentheexigenciesofwarfare madereligiousobservancemoredifficult.Nodistancewastoogreat,nor anyefforttoowearying,whenitpromisedachanceofattendanceatMass andtheSacraments.Andhisvisits todifferentchurchesweretheabsolute highlightsofhistimeabroad.
Tothoseofuswhoknewhimmost hislight-heartedwayandgaywinning smilearethebestmemories.Ofhim itcantrulybesaid:"Wewillalways rememberyousmiling."ForPeter wasessentiallyhappy,withthebuoyanthappinesswhichcomesfromwithin.
HeenlistedintheR.A.A.F.inFebruary,1941,andaftertraininginthe Eastwasdraftedthencetobattleareas. Buteventheprivationsofdesertand warfarecouldnotshakehisspirit,and hisletterswerefullofthelighterside -thepleasantinterludes-andslurredoverthegrimrealities.
ItwasonJuly23thattheaccident occurredwhichcausedhisuntimely death.Duringthetwodaysinwhich helingeredhewasmostblessedin havingtheministrationsofaCatholic Chaplain,sothathewasabletoreceivethelastSacramentsanddepart thislifewitheveryhelpofreligion. Tohissorrowingfamilythisisagreat andlastingcomfort.

Obituary. Wesincerelyregrettoannouncethe death,onThursdayevening,September23,ofMatthewCollins,of48Rosalie-street,Subiaco,ThelateMr.Collin,wasborninBendigo,Victoria,68 yearsago.Hecametothegoldfields ofW.A.in1896.Whilstthusengaged atBoulderhewasmarriedinthat citytoNorahWilliams,ofNorthampton,whowasamusicteacherwiththe SistersofSt.Josephintheirpioneer daysonthe'Fields.In1911Mr.CollinstookupemploymentwiththeRailwayDepartment,beingengagedatthe MidlandJunctionWorkshopscontinuouslyuntilheretiredaboutthree yearsago. Hehadlivedinthissuburbforover 25years.Mr.Collinswasformany yearsanactiveHibernian,reachingthe presidentialchairintheBoulder,MaylandsandSubiacobranchesofthatSociety.
Alwaysaloyal,faithfulandexemplaryparishioner,Mr.Collinswasalso oneofthechurchcollectorsherefor over20years.Hewasfurthermorea memberofthelocalexecutiveofthe HolyNameSociety,andtheparishis thepoorerforhispassing.Mr.Collinshadnotenjoyedgoodhealthfor -on,years.liehadsufferedaseries ofheartattacksaboutsixweeksago, buthadralliedtotheextentofhis walkingaroundagain.Hissuddendemisethereforecameasashocktohis widecircleoffriends.

Butwhathasthisgottodowiththe InfallibilityofthePope?WasEugeniusahereticbecausetheAssemblyat Basledeclaredhimso?TheonlyconclusiontobedrawnfromthisunprecedentedactionisthattheFathersof theCouncilwentmuchbeyondtheir attributions.Itwouldbeeasytoturn theargumentagainstthemandprove themhereticshecasetheyhaddepartedfromtheconstantanduniversalbeliefoftheChurchinthismatter.This beliefwassolemnlyproclaimedin1439 attheCouncilofFlorence,whichwas acontinuationofthatofBasle,withouttheanomaliesofthelatter.
AnOecumenicalCouncilnowpronouncedthePopetobethehead,not merelyofindividualChurches,butof theChurchUniversal,toderivehis power,notfromthewillofthefaithful,butimmediatelyfromChrist,whose Vicarheis;andtobenotonlythe Father,butalsotheTeacher,towhom allChristiansowesubmission.

TheopportunitywastakenofpresentingadonationofachequetoVery Rev.Dr.Kennedy,whowaspresent,as representingHisGracetheArchbishop, andtheLordMayorofPerthwaspresenttoacceptachequeasanadvance investmentintheFourthLibertyLoan. Onthesechequesbeingpresentedby theHighChiefRanger,atbeginningof thefunction,Dr.Kennedysuitablyresponded,andtheLordMayor,inhis remarkspaidtributetotheSociety andtothesonsofIreland,whoproved themselvesexcellentandloyalcolonists ineverypartoftheworld,andthathe hadgleanedfromfiguressuppliedhim thatoneineveryfouroftheSociety's memberswereintheForces,which wasanachievementtobeproudof.

AccordingtoacomuniquereceivedfromGeneralMcArthur'sHeadquar- ters,25enemyaircraftbombedandstrafedtheMissionareaontheDrys- daleRiverinahit-and-runraidearlyonMondaymorning,causingminor damageandcasualties.
TheMissionwasfoundedin1908by thelateBishopTorres, Abbot ofNewNorcia,attherequestofthe AustralianPlenaryCouncil(heldin Sydneyin1905),fortheevangelisation oftheaboriginesintheEastKimberley.
TheMissioncomprisestheterritory includedbetweenthedegrees128longitudeand16latitudesouth,ofanarea of37,125squaremiles.Ithasbeen conductedforthepast35yearsbythe BenedictineMonksofNewNorcia.
Twocentresareactuallyestablished intheMission,namely,Pagoand Calombooroo,beingadministeredby fourPriestsandonelay-Brother.The PrioroftheMissionisVeryRev.

OnFriday,August20,SisterMary Albertus,knownintheworldasLeila Collins,passedtohereternalreward attheMaterMisericordiaeHospital, Newcastle.ShewasborninMelbourne55yearsago,butatanearly agewenttoliveinVictoriaPark.For twenty-fiveyearsshewasamember oftheCommunityoftheSistersofSt. Joseph.Mostofherlifeasanunwas spentinNewNnrcia.In1939shewas transferredtoGosford,NewSouth Wales,becauseoffailinghealth.Two yearsagosheunderwentaseriousoperation,fromtheeffectsofwhichshe neverfullyrecovered.
FatherT.Keogh,whocelebratedthe RequiemMass,saidthatSisterM.Albertuswaspossessedofthosequalities ofnatureandgracewhichgotomake upagoodReligious.Shewasakindlygentlesoul,withacharmofmannerthatwonforhertheloveandesteemofallwithwhomshecamein contact.Shewas,however,especially lovedbythechildren,withwhomshe hadawayofherown.Shewasa childamongstchildren.Continuing, FatherKeoghsaidSisterAlbertus'influencewasnotconfinedtothemusic room,butspreadtothefourcorners oftheparish,intothemanyhomes fromwhichchildrencametoherto learnmusic.Herpassingwasaloss totheComunitytowhichshebelongedandtotheparishofGosford.May sherestinpeace.

Bornin1865inAntrim,Northern Ireland,many'werethetimeshelistenedeagerlytothetalesofvisiting marinersaboutAustralia'sbountiful gold.Thus,atanearlyage,fullof aventuresomespiritandanxiousto getrichquickly,helefthishomeland forAustralia.ArrivingatRoebourne in1890,hejourneyedonfoottothe Pilbarragoldfields,whereheremained untilnewsofBayley'srichfindatCool. gardieinducedhimtotryhisluckon thenewfield,whichhereachedinOctober,1892.Foralongtimethescarcityofwaterprovedaseriousmenace totheprospectors,andwhensubsequentlywaterwasdiscovered35miles northwestofCoolgardie,Mr.McKin-

Thesecondmostquotedreasonis indifferencetotheimportanceofMass andoftheFaithingeneral-toadaily lifeinwhichGodhaslittleshare,livedinhomesinwhichfewsignsofCatholiclifeanddevotionaretobe found,without,usually,acrucifix,holy pictures,statuesorholywater.
Indifferentpeopleusuallyuseno prayer-bookormissal,evenifprovided,andnot,sevenarosary.

GeneralCommunion, Itgivesmegreatpleasuretoreport thatthegeneralCommunion,which washeldattheCathedralonlastSunday,September26,wasanoutstanding success.Whenoneconsidersthedifficultiesmemberswerefacedwithregardingtransportatthepresenttime, itisevenmorecreditable,thoughtraditionaloftheAssociation,thatmembersmadesuchasupremeeffortand attendedinsuchlargenumbers.The Chaplain,Rev.FatherRafferty,celebratedtheMass,andduringsamehe tooktheopportunityofexpressinghis appreciationoftheexcellentworkthe Associationhaddone,andwasstill doing,asaCatholicorganisation.He saidthatthemembersmetina trulyCatholicatmosphere,andmanya girlandboyhadmethisorherpartner tosharemarriedlifewith.TheAssociationhastoitscreditsnoremarriagesfromwithinitsranksthanany otherCatholicorganisation,andifthey didnothingmorethanthistheywould bedoinganexcellentworkforthe Church."
FollowingtheMassandCommunion, membersadjournedtotheCathedral Hall,whereanexcellentbreakfastwas partakenof.Duringthebreakfast, thePresident(Mr.A.E.Heagney)ex pressedhisappreciationatsuchanexcellentattendance,andsaidthatitall angeredwellforthetimetocomewhen theAssociationwouldagaingetback tonormalconditions.Inconclusion, thePresidentreadatelegramfrom SenatorDorothyTangney,ourvicepresident,expressingregretatnotbeing abletobepresent,andwishingthe Associationaverysuccessfulday.
Intheafternoonnearlyahundred membersmetatRobertsonPark,and
ofCatholicbooksandC.T.S.bookcases aremosthelpful.Itissuggestedthat afive-minutes'talkonthesubjectbe givenatallearlySundayMasses,chieflyforthosewhoattendsuchMasses regularlyand,therefore,donothear thepreachedWordofGod.
Laziness.
Thirdly,thereislaziness,over-sleeping,causedbySaturdaynight"junketings,"lategoingtobed,noplanning forSundaymorning,nosenseoftime andmeresloth.Manyparents,it seems,oversleepandthustheirchildrenarelate,too,andevensometimes mi,sMassaltogether.
Remediesareobvious:goingtobed earlieronSaturday,familyarrangementsthatoneshouldactas"knocker-up"forthewholefamily,theconstantendeavourtoarriveatchurchat leastfiveminutesbeforeMassbegins, areamongthemanycuressuggested.
Afourthreasonforlateness,mentionedbysomeofthewriters,isthe unptmctualityoftheclergy.This,it ispointedout,isdueinmanycasesto thepriesthavingtohearconfessions immediatelybeforeMass.
