IstheIndexanUnwarrantedInterferencewithLiberty?
ProtestantMisconceptionsabouttheFunction oftheChurch
AcceptanceofTruthNecessarily ImpliesRejectionofError.
ToProtestantsespeciallytheIndex seemstobeakindofbogey.Theyregarditslawsandprohibitionsasan unwarrantedinterferencewithhuman liberty,anattempttoimposeintellectualslavery. Theirattitudeisperhapsinaccordancewiththefundamentaltenetsofthe so-called"Reformation,"and,likethose tenets,springsfromacompletemisconceptionofthenatureandfunctionof theChurchofChrist.Theprinciples involvedareveryobviousandelementary,butastheirapplicationinthe presentinstanceseemstohavebeen missedbymanywhohavenottheexcuseofhereticaltradition,itmaybe welltostatethembriefly.
ChristfoundedHisChurchtohelp mentoattainthatsupernaturaldestinywhichHeHimselfhadrendered possiblebyHisdeathontheCross. It isherduty-andhersexclusively-to guidemenontheroadtoheaven, and fortheaccomplishmentofherduty shehasreceivedfromherDivine Founderallthesupernaturalpowers necessary. Thus, shewasappointed thepermanentteacherofallreligious truths,"Going, therefore, teachall nations teachingthemallthings whatsoeverIhavecommandedyou." (Matt.xxvii.,19-20.)

TheIndexlegislation,therefore,is thenaturalandinmoderntimesat least,thenecessaryoutcomeofthe teachingpoweroftheChurch.Accept oneandyouaccepttheotherbyimplication.OfcourseamongProtestant sectsthereisnorealteachingauthority.Theinfluenceoftheiroriginalrule offaith-theScripture,asinterpreted byprivateopinion-haseffectivelypreventedthegrowthofanysuchauthority.Thechaoticdoctrinalpositionof theChurchofEnglandistellingevidenceofthefact.

ImaginaryLiberty.
Toillustratebyanexample:Natural lawforbidsmetointerferewithmy neighbour'srights,buttheStatemay defin-whatmyneighboursrightsare andinflictpenaltiesinwrongdoers.Consequently,theextollerof"Protestant liberty"islargelyimaginary.Heis hound,justasCatholicsare,notto readorpublishhadhooks,andhisor arises,notfromtheIndex laws,butfromnaturalanddivinelaw.
