Recentcontroversiesinsomeofour dailypapersaboutthedeclineof moralsamonggirlsandyoungwomen andtheanalysesofcausesandproposalsforredemieswouldbehumourouswerethematterlessserious.From itallemergesthefactthatpeople whodonotclaimtobemuchconcernedaboutreligionaredisgustedwith themoraloutlookandconductof manyyoungwomeninpublic.There isstilltheconsciousnessthatthemoralityofanationmaybejudgedbyand isdependantuponthestandardofmoralityofthenation'swomen.That therehasbeenadeclineinmoralconductbeforethepublicwillhardlybe denied-Norarethecausesofsuch declinehardtotrace.Whatismildly amazingisthatsomanypeoplewho haveforyearspastignoredordespised thewarningsofCatholicbishopsand priestsaresuddenlystruckaswitha bomb-explosionwiththerealisation thatAustraliaisreallydriftingtowardspaganism.
Itisnotthescopeofthispaperto askwhetherthecall-upofgirlsand youngwomenandtheirbeingdrafted
intoindustryandvariousphasesof war-workisthecauseortheoccasion ofmuchoftheimmoralitywhichhas madeitselfsoapparentrecentlyin Australia.Itisobviousthatthereal causemustbesoughtelsewhere,howeveraggravatingtheseinfluencesmay be.Thequestionwewouldraisehere iswhetherCatholicwomanhoodisloweringitsstandardandwhattheconsequenceswillbetothefutureofthe ChurchinAustralia.
Thequestionispromptedbythe realisation,firstly,ofwhattheCatholic womenofAustraliahavedoneduring thefirstcenturyofourhistory.The "womenoftheWest"andthe"little Irishmother"havebeenimmortalised fortheirpartintheworkofbuilding upourcontinentandourhomes;and weadmitwithgratitudethedebtthat weowetothemarvellousnunsand brotherswhohavetrainedinour schoolshundredsofthousandsofloyal citizensandsplendidCatholics.The queryisurgedwhenwecontemplate thedevelopmentthatistakingplace andwhichwillbegreatlyaugmented
Istherenotreasontothinkthatsome numberofvocations afterthewar.Optimismisagrand thing,butfactsmustbefaced.Are theredangersignalsthatthefuture oftheChurchinAustraliamaybe harassedbyinternalaswellasbyexternaltroubles?Fromthisoneaspect itmightbeaskedwhatisportended bythegrowingimpatienceofrestraint amongCatholicgirls,bythenumber whocontractmarriagesoutsidethe Church,bythenumberofgooiCatholicfamiliesthatgivenovocationsto theChurch.
Muchoftheindifferentismamong carelessCatholicsisaccompaniedbya wantofinstruction.Itiscomparativelyeasytoinstructaconvertand helphimtobecomeagoodCatholic, butitisnoteasytoinstructcareless andignorantCatholics.Whatwould

TheRev.lecturerwentontopoint outthatthereallybigdifferencebetweensociallifeasweknowitto-day inEnglishspeakingcountriesandEuropeancountriesgenerally,andsocial lifeintheMiddleAges,wasthatthen theCatholicspiritprevailedandexistedasanidealtoberespectedand reachedfor,ifneverfullyattained.
Thesenseofsinandthepresenceof thesupernaturalwasinmarkedcontrasttotheignoringofGodandthe lackofknowledgeofHisLawsoevidentto-day.Intheolddays,ifa manunfortunatelycommittedmurder oradultery,hewasthefirsttoadmit thathewasactingsinfullyandthat itwaswrong.Hehadthedecency tobeashamed.Nowadaysthemajorityofsinnersarebrazenandthe averagemanconformstostandardsof respectabilitynotmoralityassuch.

TheoriginoftheGuildsislostin antiquity;butintheirearliestknown formtheyseemtohavebeenmutual benefitsocieties.Intimesofsickness themembersandtheirfamilia,were supportedfromthecommonfund;fun. eralswerealsopaidforfromthe brethren.Inthethirteenthcentury, thepeoplereorganisedthemselvesto bettertheirconditionsanddevelopedtheguildsinthemannerinwhich theyhavebecomebestknowntous. Thattheguildswerepopularand thattheyinfluencedthelifeofthe peoplemaybegatheredfromthefact thattherewerethirtythousandof theminEnglandatthebeginningof thesixteenthcentury.Thereason fortheirpopularitymaybefoundin thenumberofneedstowhichthey ministered.Theyprovidedinsuranoe againstsickness,poverty,andfire; theysuppliedloansoneasyterms; theyprovidedforburial;theysettleddisputesbyarbitration,andtheyprovidedatechnicaleducationwhichhas neverbeenrivalled.Thislast,per- haps,istheirgreatestfeature;andto itisdirectlyresponsibletheproduc- tionofthemagnificentGothicCathedrals,thegloryofthethirteenthcentury.

WehaveheardalltoolittleofthepositivelinesofsocialreconstructionlaiddownbythePapalEncyclicals.Theideais prevalentinsomequartersthatthePopeshavecontentedthemselveswithasweepingandwholesalecondemnationofCapitalismandCommunism.OntheotherhandisaminorityofCatholicswhodon'tfeelthatthereisverymuchwrongwiththe world,theythemselvesbeinginpositionsofgreaterorlesssecurityandreceivingajustreturnfortheirlabours.TheyarewilfullycontentwithasystemwhichthePopeshaveroundlyanathematised.Others,atriflelessconservative,saythatthepresent systemadmittedlyhasdefects,butwemusthaveacareonlytowardsremedyingtheabusesandnottowardsalteringthesystem. Capitalism,viewedinageneralandhypotheticalsense.simply meansthateconomicsystembaseduponprivateownershipand operationofthemeansofproduction.Buttheactualhistorical Capitalism,whichhasheldswaysincetheIndustrialRevolution, meansthattheownershipandoperationofthen'ajorityofthe meansofproductionisconcentratedinthehandsofa.iew,who sweatlabour,reapthehighestpossibleprofitandstrivegreedily forthemaximumofeconomicdomination.
Itmaybeallverywelltoimaginealteringtheabusesofthe idealCapitalismwhichhasexistenceonlyinthemind.Butas fortheactual,hereandnow,Capitalism-itisrott"nandcorrupted,root,stemandbranches.ItisridiculousTo::.ilkofremedyingcertainincidentalabuses.Theverycoreandc.senceof thesystemisunnaturalandimmoral.Theentiresystemmust besmashedandreplacedbysomethingwhereinmencaplivewith adignitybecomingthesonsofGod.ApartfromthePapalreconstruction,thereisbutonealternative,andthatisCommunism andSocialism.ButtoCatholicscollectiveownershipnotownershipatall.Itisserfdomunderbureaucracy.TosubstituteSocialismforCapitalismisnottodestroythetyrannybutsimply togiveitanothername.Everyworkerisentitledtodirect,personalownershipofthemeansoflife.ThisistheCatholicideal thatthenation,whichislargelyatpresentanarmyofunderpaid andirresponsibleserfs,shouldbeconvertedintoanationofsmall mastersandcraftsmen.Forthoseforwhomthisisnitpossible suchasindustrialworkers,weclaimthattheyTallawnpartof thecapitaloftheirindustry,haveavoiceinitsmanagement,and feelthemselvesusefulandresponsibleproducers.
ThePopeshaveurgedareturntooccupationalgroupsbased ontheoldCatholicGuilds.Thissystem,inconjunctionwith widespreadpersonalownership,istheonlyeffectivemethodof distributingwealthmoreequally,ofbreakingdownmonopoliesand trusts,andofchangingthespiritbetweenCapitalandLabourfrom oneofantipathytooneofco-operation.Inthecorporatesystem allcitizenswhoareengagedinadefiniteeconomicactivityand whotherebyrenderaspecificservicetothecommunity,areorganisedonoccupationallines.Theyarenotsimplyprivateorganisations,butreceiveadefinitecharterforself-government. Theyhavetherighttofixwages,interest,dividends,andprices,to laydownworkingconditions,toarbitratedisputesandcarryout anyeconomicplanning.Thesepowersare,however,subjectto theguidance,directionandapprovaloftheState.BecausecertainFascistcountrieshaveeffectedsocialreconstructionalongsimilarlines,theCommunistsclaimthattheCorporateStateisnecessarilyFascist.Inthistheymissthewholepoint,thatthespecificcharacterofFascismisthedeificationoftheState.Under thisregimetheorganisationofvocationalgroupsisofanexcessivelybureaucraticandpoliticalcharacterandisusedtopromote partyinterestsratherthanabettersocialorder.Thetruesystem ofoccupationalgroups,asoutlinedbythePopes,guaranteesto industrydemocraticself-government.Itenablestheindividual tohaveausefulandbecomingplaceinthesocialorganism,enables himtodotheworkforwhichheissuited,andfreedomtodevelop hispersonality.Asregardsthenation,itrestorestheorganic conceptoflivingcellsandmembersco-operatingtowardsthecommongood.ItwouldbreakdownthetotalitarianStateandmake thebusinessofgovernmentlesscomplicatedandharassing.It wouldrestoreatruedemocracyandpublicprosperitywouldresult fromthefactthattheworkerswouldgiveoftheirbestasfree menandownersofproperty.

Afterfourorfiveyears,ifhehadbeen foundtohavesometalentforthecraft, hewasacceptedasajourneyman,the lowestgradeintheguild.Thenhe wentfromplacetoplacegettingwork wherehecould,andpickingupagreat dealofnewknowledgeofhistradein varioustownsbeforehereturnedtohis nativetownortotheplacewherehe intendedtosettledown.Hisnextendeavourwastogainfullmembership oftheguild,toqualifyasamaster craftsman.Hehadfirsttoproduce evidenceprovingthathehadduly finishedhisapprenticeshipandhis yearsasajourneyman.Havingsatisfiedtheofficialsonthishead,hehad nexttopresenttothematestpiece 01workasevidenceofhisskill.Ifit cameuptothestandardhewasadmittedtofullmembershipwithfull rightsandprivileges.Thissample inconsequencewasknownasthemasterpiece.ThesamepracticewasfollowedalloverEuropeasinEngland, andthedevelopmentofskillwasin largemeasure,andinmostgrades,due tothesamecause;thedesiretomake dwellingsworthyofGodwhowasto inhabitthem.
Alltheartsatthistimeowedtheir inspirationtotheChurch,andfound theirhighestexpressioninthedecorationofcathedrals.InEnglandalone abouttwentycathedralswereerected orincourseoferectioninthethirteenthcentury,andontheContinent verymanymore,notallofwhich. needlesstosay,werecompletedwithin thecentury.Twoconsequencesfollowfromthis:firstly,sincetherewas somuchactivityinbuilding,thoseresponsiblefortheerectionofthecathedralshad,ofnecessity,torelyupon localtalenttoaverygreatextent.It wasimposibletogetmentocomefrom verygreatdistanceswhentheirservices wererequiredintheirownimmediate neighbourhood,wheretheycouldply theirownvarioustradestogreatadvantage;andsecondly,therewasengenderedaspiritoffriendlyrivalry.

Ateachcentreatwhichacathedral wasinthecourseofbeingerected, thepeoplefeltacertainprideabout theworkinhand,andtheystrovetheir utmostnotonlytoproducesomething worthyofGod,notonlytoproduce somethingnotquitelikeanyother building,somethingdistinctive,which shouldbecharacteristicofthemselves andtheirneighbourhood,butthey tried,too,toensurethattheircathedralwouldbefinerandbetterthan anyotherthenbeingerectedinneighbouringtowns.Eachofthesecircumstancesresultedinthegrowthofwhat maywellbetermedtechnicalschools inthevicinityofthecathedrals,where consequentlyartisticskillwasdevelopedtoaveryhighdegree.Thelocal stonemasonsputtheirverybestefforts intotheproductionofworthysculpture:thecarpenterssawthatonlythe veryfinestwoodworkwasproduced; theworkersinmetalsetaboutthe constructionofcommonplacegatesand hingesandlocksandbolts,andmade ofthemenduringworksofart.LincolnandSalisbury,Rheimsand Amiens,SiennaandBurgos,whatnoble monumentstothehumble,nameless artistswhoconstructedthem!Where findto-daymetalworkofsuchsurpassingbeautyasthatofthegate"de laVierge,"intheNotreDamede Paris?Whatmodernsculpturecould reproducethedelicatetraceriesofBurgos?Theinteriorfittings,thewindows,thealtarvessels,chalices,monstrances,reliquaries,crucifixes,these arenolessbeautifulandnolesstypicalofthecenturywhichproduced them.Onlyinanagelikethatcould theyhavebeenproduced.Thenthe workerwasanartist,andlovedhis workforitsownsake,not,asto-day,a machine,practicallyforgettingthings done,workingsimplyforawage,caringlittlehowtheworkisdone,coming reluctantlytoworkandleavingas soonasmaybe.Thethirteenthcenturyworker,onthecontrary,wasglad ofanewdaywhichmightseethecompletionofonepieceorthebeginningof another,theperfectionortouchingup oflastday'sworkwhichfailinglight hadinterrupted.Therewasnosocialproblemthen,formenwerehappy, asonlythosecanbewhofindcontentmentandpleasureintheirdailytasks.
Whatwasdoneforthecathedrals, andwhatwasdonebythemforthe workers,wasdonealsofor,andby, themanymonasteriesbuiltatthis time,thepublicbuildingsandthe castlesofthenobles,whichdrawless attentionnow,thoughtheyarewell worthyofthestudents'notice.The castles,ofcourse,beingbuiltasplaces ofretreatintimeofwaraswellofresidenceinpeace,arestrongerandless ornateexteriorlythanaretheother buildings,buttheinteriorfittingsand decorationareworthyproductsoftheir age.
