Thepriestwhomadetheremarkhas 4justreceivedwordthathisbrotherhad arrived,withhisdyingcomrades,ina particularlydangeroustheatreofwar. 1thoughtofthemillionsofotherrelativesforwhomthepresentorthe nearfutureholdsananxietysimilar tohis-andofthemanyforwhomthat anxietyhasalreadybecomethesad knowledgethatsomedearonewillnot return.Perhapsthey,too,willfind agreaterstrengthandcomfort-anda holypride-inthethoughtswhichinspiredthatpriest'swords.
Thecertaintythatatruemartyr goesstraightfromdeathtoheavenis asoldastheChurchherself.Thered watersofmartyrdom,theChurchhas alwaystaught,areasutterlycleansing astheSacramentalwatersofBaptism. Theywashawaynotonlythewhole guiltofsinbutalsoallofsin'sdebt ofpunishment,temporalaswellaseternal.Therecan,therefore,benoPurgatoryforonewhoistrulyamartyr; theflightofhissoulisstraighttothe sideofGodinHeaven.Thisiswhy theChurch,evenfromthedaysbefore thecatacombs,hasneverprayedfor amartyredAgnesorCeciliaorSebastian."Forallourotherdead,"asStAugustinewrote,"wepray:butforour martyrs,asthefaithfulknow,wedo notpraybutgivethematoncethe honoursofthealtarofGod."Pope InnocentIIIwarnedthat"toprayfor amartyrwouldbeareflectionupon thegloryofhismartyrdom."

Thisrefers,ofcourse,onlytothose whoaremartyrsinthetrueandageoldsenseofthatgloriousword,forit isonlythesewhosesoulsaremaderesplendentwiththeBaptismaleffects ofrealmartyrdomandwhowillwear throughalleternitywhattheChurch describesas"themartyr'scrown."
Amartyr,inthistrueandfullmeaningoftheword,isonewhowillingly makesthesacrificeofhislifeintestimonyofthetruthofChristianityand indefenceofChristianityagainstthose whowouldoppressit.Scholarshave writtengreatbooksonthewealthof meaningwhichthosewordsimply.But threethingsemergeastheessential meaningoftruemartyrdom.Itmust bedeathforChrist,atthehandsof theenemiesofChrist,willinglyenduredfortheloveofChrist.Suchbrief, simplewords,yettheydescribethe zenithofahumanheart'sloveandall aroundthemtheairisholywithOur Saviour'swords:"Thisdaythoushalt bewithmeinParadise."
Nowthemanwhogavebackhissoul toGodinthejunglesofNewGuinea orintheAfricandesert,oronsome battle-sweptocean-canthesethings allbesaidofhim?Rememberingthat onlytheChurchherselfcansaywith definiteauthoritywhoaremartyrs,it wouldseemneverthelessthattheycan. Andiftheycan,thenthatmanisa truemartyrandthosewholovehim canhave,intheirsorrow,thedeepcomfortofknowingthathissoulisimmediatelywithGodineternalhappiness.
NolessatheologianthanSt.Thomas Aquinasteaches-andothereminent theologiansagree-thatasoldier's deathinbattlecanbetrulycalleda

martyrdom.Sometheologians,itis true,havedisagreed:buttheweight ofallthebestargumentsseemstobe againstthem.
Byitself,deathforone'scountryis notenoughtomakeoneatruemartyr. Themartyrmustdienotmerelyfor somecreatedthingbutforaDivine cause-forChrist.Butwhowould saythattheCatholicsoldierorsailor diesfortheloveofhiscountryonly, andnotfortheloveofChristaswell? Isnothisloveofcountryfoundedon hisveryloveofChrist?Hehasmade himselfaloyalcitizen,eventothe givingofhislife,preciselybecauseit wasChrist'swillthatheshouldbea goodcitizenandfightforhiscountry initsdayofperil.Overthealtarof suchasoldier'ssacrificethereshines notonlythebrightstarofhisloveof countrybutthebrighterstarofalove
whichsaid:"RenderuntoCaesarthe thingsthatareCaesar's."Hedies foraChristianpatriotism;anddeath foranyChristianvirtueistrulydeath forChrist.
"Deathforone'scountry,"Saint Thomaswrites,"whenitremainsunrelatedtoChrist,doesnotwinthecrown ofmartyrdom.Butdeathforthe fatherland,whenitisrelatedtoChrist, willmeritthecrownandmakeonea martyr.Thisisthecasewhenasoldierdiesindefendinghiscountry againstanenemywhoisendeavouring tocorrupttheFaithofChrist."
Thisrecallsthesecondrequirement formartyrdom.Themartyrmustdie atthehandsofChrist'senemies.Like theholyMass,martyrdomisacontinuationthroughthecenturiesof Calvary'sowntragedyandglory.The blowwhichstrikesdownthemartyr mustbeaimedatChristHimself,or thethingsforwhichHestands.This iswhySaintThomascannotcallevery soldierwhodiesinwaramartyr.To betrulyamartyr,hemustmakethe supremesacrificeagainstanenemywho hasmovedagainstChristandChristianity.
ThattheAxis,inthiswar,isattackingChristianityisnotsomethingtobe saidlightly.Agreatnumberoftheir soldiers,perhapseventhevastmajority,areinspiredbynosuchheinous motive.Thepresentwar,ashasso oftenbeenmadeclearinPapalutterances,istheexpressionofaprofound socialandeconomicdisorderwhich cutsacrossalllinesofChristianityand modernpagnism.Yopaintitas merelyastrugglebetweenthewhiteof ChristandtheblackofAntichrist wouldbesheernonsenseandworse. Itwouldbeasstupidasitwouldhe dangeroustoshutoureyestotheplwerfulanti-Christianforcesatwork withinourownranks.

Anedcational"NewDeal"isbeingpreparedinEngland,andmanyCatholicsareafraidthatthedealmaybe"stacked"againstthem.
Hereisacompetentanalysisoftheproblem,writtenespeciallyforover seasreadersbyMichaeldelaBedoyere,editorofLondon"CatholicHeralii."
Thesubjecthasbeenfrequentlymentionedinthedailypresscables.
Still,thesubjecthasalwaysplayed avitalpartinthestruggleofEnglish Catholicsforfullemancipationand, to-day,ithasitsrelevancetothefreedomsforwhichtheUnitedNationsare fighting.It,therefore,deservesthe attentionofCatholicsoverseaswhomay beinterestedtocompareourposition inEnglandwiththeirs.
Thematterarisesfromthewidespreadfeelinginthiscountrythateducationisamongthesubjectsupon .whicha"newdeal"isexpectedassoon aspossible,and,inanycase,afterthe war.Itfigures,forexample,asthe secondoftheFivePointsofReform towhichCardinalHinsley,theArchbishopsofCanterburyandYork,and theModeratoroftheFreeChurchesappendedtheirsignaturesinthefamous manifestoattheendof1940.The pointinquestionreads:
"Everychild,regardlessofraceor class,shouldhaveequalopportunities ofeducation,suitableforthedevelopmentofhispeculiarcapacities."
QuestionatIssue.
Thepointexpressesverywellthe universalfeelingofthecountry,and itmayfairlybesaidthatitisinresponsetosuchademandthattheBritishGovernmenthasdecided,evenin wartime,tobeginwhatmayprovea longstoryofeducationalreformby bringinginaBillthatwillcoverState educationforboysandgirlsuptothe ageofsixteen.TheGovernment'sproposalsarenotyetknown,butitis certainthattheywillinthemselves raisenodifficultyasbetweenChurch andState.Thoughindividuals,whether ofreligioustemperornot,maywell questionthewholephilosophythat underliesmoderneducation-andcertainlyitsresultsinthepasthavenot beentoohappy-thereisnoquestion ofanyorganisedopposition,andChristiansofallcommunionshavegoneout oftheirwaytodenythattheyhave anysortofquarrelwithtechnicaleducationalproposalsandreformsthat
theStatemaywishtointroduce.CatholicBishopshaveevensaidinpublicthattheydonotobjecttothevery far-reachingeducationalreformswhichincorporatemuchsocialorclass reform-thathavebeenputforward bytheTradeUnionCongressinitsrecentManifesto;andwemaytakeit thataNationalGovernmentwillnot gosofarastheTradeUnions.
No,thequestionatissueturnssolely onreligiouseducationwhich,alas!is butatinymatterinanyproposalsfor educationalreformin1943.
Tounderstandtheissue,onemust appreciatesomethingofthepasthistoryofeducationinthiscountry.The pioneersoffreeeducationforboysand girlswerethechurches,nottheState. Hencethefirstschoolswereschools runbyAnglicansandotherreligious bodies.WhentheStatetookover. asofcourseithadtoiffreeeducation wastohegiventoall,acompromise wasreachedasbetweentheChurchand theStateinregardtoChurchschools. Accordingtothatcompromise,ifthe Churchwantedtohaveitsownschools withinthenationalsystem,itmust bearthecostofbuildingtheschools, anditwouldnotberelievedinany wayfrompaymentoftheratesthat producedthemoneyforthebuilding andmaintenanceofotherschools.On theotherhand,itwouldreceiveagrant whichwouldpayabouthalftheexpensesofrunningtheChurchschools.
IncourseoftimetheStateundertook allrunningexpenses.Itshouldbe notedthatwhileaminimumofreligiousinstructionofanundenominational characterwastobegivenintheState schools,subjecttoaparents'-conscience clause,inpracticethisamountedtolittleornothing,andcouldbeomitted altogether.Itwasasaresultofthis thatmanypeopleinthiscountrywere appalledtodiscoveratthetimeof thegreatevacuationofchildrenfrom dangerousareasthatmanychildren hadneverevenheardofOurLord.It

ItwasunderthissystemthatCatholicsbuiltmorethanathousand schools,educatingsome400,000children.
Butincourseofyearstheeducational standardrequiredbythecountry greatlyrose,asdidthestandardof buildingandtheexpenseofequipment andmaintenance.Thisveryproper educationalprogressnecessarilythrew everheavierfinancialburdensonCatholicsandAnglicanswhowereexpectedtoreorganiseandrebuild.Forthe reorganisationandrebuildingtheGovernmentwaspreparedtomakegrants but,evenso,theChurchescouldnot findthemoneyfortheirshare.
This,roughly,wasthepositionbefore thewar.Tocounterthissteadypressureagainstreligiouseducation,however,thewarhasbroughthometo manytheveryrealneedforasound religiousandmoraleducationifthe country'syouthistobesufficiently trainedtoplayitsnationalpartata crucialtimelikethepresent.Indeed, manysoundeducationalistshavereactedfromtheoldliberalisminthis sense,andthelessonofsecularisteducationinGermanyandFrancewas notwhollylost.
Astothereligiousfactorinnational education,then,theGovernmenthas beenfacedontheonesidewiththe needforsounderandwiderreligious educationand,ontheother,bythe apparentinabilityofCatholicsandAnglicanstocontinuetoplaytheirold partinthenationalsystem,owingto therisingstandardsandexpensesof moderneducation.Moreover,ithas tomeetaverystrongdemandfora unifiednationalsystem,inwhichthere willbenoroomforChurchschools. Thisdemandisvoicedbymanylib*Aralandlabourelements,notablythe TradeUnionCongress,but,evenmore importantthanthese,istheviewof theorganisedteachersthemselves, whodislikethepresent"dual"system andanyreligioustestsforthemselves. Moreover,thematterisgreatlycomplicatedbytheexistenceofwhatare called"single-schoolareas,"places
wheretheAnglicanschoolwasoriginallybuilt,andwherethebuildingof anotherschoolwouldnotbejustified bynumbers.IntheseareastheChurch schoolhasthemonopolyofteaching, andmostchildreninpracticehaveto gotoit.Thisisapointuponwhich theadvocatesofaunifiedsystemhave strongarguments,butitdoesnotconcernCatholics,becausetheyhaveonly averyfewschoolsofthisdescription.
CatholicsOpposed.
TheGovernmentbelievesthatauni flededucationalsystem,withcompulsoryandseriousreligiousinstruction -accordingtoasyllabusagreedupon bytheChurches,butundenominational initself-isthebestsolution;andto thisplantheAnglicanshaveinprincipleagreed.Theymakecertainreservationscalculatedtopreservethe Anglicancharacteroftheirownschools, butthesedonotevenguaranteean Anglicanheadmaster.
TothissolutionCatholicsareabsolutelyopposed,andtheHierarchy, speakingthroughCardinalHinsley,has madeitamplyclearthatanysuch solutionwouldbe,sotospeak,overthe deadbodiesofCatholics.Thereis, moreover,asubstantialandimportant sectionoftheAnglicanswhoshare thesefeelings.Theargumentisthat therightanddutytoeducationresides intheparentsbynaturallaw,andconsequently,todepriveChristianparents -whopayforeducationasmuchas othercitizens-oftheirrighttohave theirchildreneducatedaccordingto theirconscienceisaninfringementof thelibertyforwhichweareallfighting.Itispointedoutthatnosound religiouseducationcancomefromthe useofan"agreedsyllabus"which maybeChristiansentiment,butitis notChristianlifeanddoctrine,andthe countryiswarnedthattheultimate resultsmustbea"totalitarian"State philosophy,initsessenceofthesame natureastheHitlerismwhichwewish todestroy.
Ontheotherhand,theCatholic claimsareinthemselvessmall.Catholicsdonotwanttoownorrun schoolsoftheirown,solongasthere isaguaranteethattheCatholiccharacteroftheschoolismaintainedand Catholicteachers,satisfactorytothe Catholicauthorities,areguaranteed. Indeed,theburdenofmaintaining Churchschoolsandtheprospectofhavingtobuildnewonestoconformto newstandardsissoheavythatmany Catholicswelcomethethoughtofanew deal.

Aftertheintroductoryadmonitions, theArchbishopandclergychanted theLitanyoftheSaints;thenfollowedtheimpositionofhands.Afterthe PrefaceHisGraceconferredthechasubleontheordinand.TheVeniCreatorwasthenbeautifullyrenderedby theChildren'sChoir.AtitsconclusiontheArchbishopannointedthe handsoftheordinandwiththeOilof theCatechumens,afterwhichhis handswereboundwithwhitelinen.
Then,presentinghimwiththechalice andpaten,theArchbishopconferred thepowerofofferingSacrificeandof celebratingMass.
FromtheOffertorytotheendofthe Masstheordinandrepeatedwordfor wordwiththeArchbishop,andatthe Consecrationco-consecratedwithhim. Afterthenewly-ordainedpriesthad receivedHolyCommunion,hemadea professionoffaith,afterwhichthe powerofforgivingsinwasconferred andthenewpriestmadehissolemn promiseofobediencetotheArchbishop.
AftertheceremonyFatherBourke gavehisblessing,firstlytoHisGrace andthentohisrelatives,friends,and tothewholeofthelargecongregation. DuringtheMassandafterwardsthe Children'sChoirsangappropriate hymns.
Intheevening,BatherBourkegave BenedictionoftheBlessedSacrament, withVeryRev.FatherHaugh, asdeacon,Rev.FatherNolanassubdeacon,andVeryRev.FatherMoss asstoledeaconandM.C.VeryRev. FatherHaugh,0.M.I.,preachedonthe dignityofthePriesthood,itsduties andobligations,especiallythoseof preachingandofofferingsacrifice.

Inaddition,thesourcesofprivate charityhave,toalargeextent,dried upasthefinancialdemandsofthe warperiodgrowheavier.Henceit hasbeennecessarytodeviseother waysandmeansoffinancingtheseinstitutions,sonecessaryforthenational welfare.

Becauseofthis,CatholicsinEngland-andlatterlymanyAnglicanshaveadvocatedtheadoptioninEngland,ofthesystemthathasbeeninexistenceforagoodmanyyearsinScotland.InScotland,wheretheeducationalauthorityisquitedifferent,all theschoolsbelongtotheStateandare whollypaidforbytheState,but Churchschoolsareallowedtomaintaintheirownreligiousstatusand, thoughtheirteachersareappointedby theState,theyareappointedfroma listapprovedbythereligiousauthority.Obviously,thesystemhasits dangers,sincethelastwordrestsin theorysoobviouslywiththeState,but infactithasworkedadmirably,and Catholicschoolshavebeentreated withtheutmostfairness.
Atthetimeofwriting,thereappears tobelittlechanceoftheadoptionin EnglandofthisScottishprecedent.The
Governmentseemsrathertobeintendingtoenforceaunifiednationalsystem ofsecularschoolsinwhichthe"agreed syllabus"ofreligiousinstructionwill beenforcedandtakenseriously-subject,ofcourse,toaparents'-conscience clause.Buttheimplacableopposition ofCatholics-theyhaverecentlybeen describedintheLondon"Times"as "fightingtothelastditch,which meansthelasthedgeschool"-will forcetheGovernmenttoexemptthe Catholicschoolsfromthenationalsystem.Thesewillbeallowedtocarry onasbefore,andanofferof50per cent.ofthecostsofbringingCatholic schoolsuptothenewnationalstandardwillbemade.
Suchasolutionisprofoundlyunsatisfactory.Itisquiteimpossibleforthe Catholiccommunitytorindthe50per cent.thatwillberequired,oreven25 percent.-money,beitnoted,that wouldhavetobepaidinexcessof ordinaryratesthatmaintainthenationalsystem-andCatholicschools mustremaininconstantdangerof
beingtakenoverontheState'sterms, onthegroundthattheyarenotup tostandard.Apartfromthis,such proposalswouldestablishauniform systemofeducation(apartfromCatholics)thatwoulddeliverthewhoie communityintothehandsofpurely secularistinterestswithaspineless "agreedsyllabus"ofundenominational religiousinstructionasthesoledefence againstamaterialistoutlook.Itseems
