The"CurzonLine,"whichisbrought upwheneverthequestionofPoland's easternprovincesisdiscussedinthe press,isusuallyreferredtoasafrontierbasedontheethnographicalprinciple,andsuggestedbytheAllied Powersafterthelastwar.Inactual factthis"frontier"wasrejectedby PolandandlaterrenouncedbyRussiaintheRigaTreatyofMarch8, 1921.
TheTreatyofVersailles,signed whentheAlliedPowersdidnotrecogniseSovietRussiaandthoughtthere wasapossibilityofaTsaristrestoration,fixedmerelyatemporarylineof demarcationbetweenRussiaandPa landandauthorisedthePolishGovernmenttoorganisearegularadministrationintheeasternterritorieswithinthisline.Atthesametimethe CouncilstatedthatPolandwasentitledtoclaimcertainlandlyingto theeastofthisline.
Thislinewasnotcalledthe"CurzonLine"untilJuly,1920,wheninthe midstofthePolish-SovietwarLord Curzon,theBritishForeignSecretary, appealedtotheSovietandPolishGovernmentstohalttheirtroopsfifty kilometrestotheeastofthatline.
ThefortunesoftheBritishmediationeffortandofthe"CurzonLine" whichwasconnectedwithitwere strangeindeed.TheSovietGovernmentrememberedthattheAllied Powershadpreventedthefixingofa
