In1938Mr.Chrisholmdiscovered,in anEnglishvillage,anAustraliantreasure-trove,valuablehistoricaldocuments,includingthediarykeptby JohnGilbert,Englishnaturalist-explorer,ontheexpeditionof1844-45,organisedandledbyLudwigLeichhardt.The expeditionwasoneofthemostremarkableandmostimportantinAustralianhistory,andthusthediscovery ofGilbert'sdiary,thefirstunbiassed accountofthegreattrek,wasnotonly aromanticevent,butoneofconsiderableimportance.

Thediaryisaday-to-dayrecord, writtenunderincrediblydifficultconditions,ofalltheactivitiesandexperiencesanddiscoveriesoftheLeichhardt party.GilbertwasaSamuelPepys ofthebush,andhisdiarycontains somestartlingrevelations.

Oneoftheauthor'spurposesin "StrangeNewWorld"istogiveatrue pictureofthatexpeditionof1844-45, andtoredeemthereputationofLeichhardt'scompanions,aboutwhom Leichhardtwrotesomeharshthings. Thediaryisquotedwitharunning commentaryinwhichthestatements ofGilbert,Leichhardt,andaconvict memberofthepartyarecompared, thussummarisingtheindividualstories ofthreeverydifferentmen.Someof theconvict'srevelationsregarding Leichhardtarealmoststaggering.

Leichhardt'swholestory,themost fantasticinAustralianhistory,isseen inclearerperspective;thecharacterof themanisanalysedandcheckedwith thecommentsofhiscompanionson twoexpeditions;andwefeelthatthe authorisunprejudicedinhisjudgment whenheseestheGermanexploreras aneurotic,self-centreddreamer,and yetasadistinctive,romanticandimportanthistoricalfigure.
