Thequestionastowhetherthediversityofreligiouscreeds-anevident andpainfulhistoricalfact-isaninsurmountableobstacletohumancooperation,isexaminedbyM.JacquesMaritain,leaderofFrenchthought (nowanexileinAmericainanaddressgivenintheUnitedStates,whichis herereported.
Suchatopiccannotadequatelybe treatedfromwithout;thatistosay, fromamerelypsychologicalorsociologicalpointofview.Wemusttry totreatitfromwithin,thatistosay, fromthereligiouspointofview. Nothinginhistory,indeed,goesto showthatreligiousfeelingorreligious ideashavebeenparticularlysuccessfulinpacifyingmen.Religiousdifferencesseemrathertohavefedand sharpenedtheconflicts.Andyetifit istruethathumansocietymustbring togetherintheserviceofthesameterrestrialcommongoodmenbelonging todifferentspiritualfamilies,howcan thepeaceofthetemporalsocietybe lastinglyassurediffirstinthedomain thatmattersmosttothehumanbeing -inthespiritualandreligiousdomain itself-relationshipsofmutualrespect andmutualunderstandingcannotbe established?
Iprefertheword"fellowship"to "tolerance,"foritconnotessomething positive-positiveandelementary-in humanrelationships.Itconjuresup theimageoftravellingcompanions, whomeetherebelowbychanceand journeythroughlife-howeverfundamentaltheirdifferencesmaybe-good hurnouredly,incordialsolidarityand humanagreement.Ishouldliketo quoteinthisconnectionthewordspronouncedbyPopePiusXIIathiscoronation:"Ourthoughtsgooutalsoin thissolemnmomenttoallthosewho areoutsidetheChurchandwho,we
shouldliketothink,willrejoiceto learnthatthePopepraystoAlmighty Godforthemalsoandwishesthem everypossiblegood."ItwasasolemnoccasionwhenthePopecalled uponallmenofgoodwilltoanattempt,adeliberateone,tobringcloser togetherthebelieversofthevarious religiousfamilies.Thiswassomething relativelynew.Nodoubttheattemptispartlyduetotheimminent dangers,totheterriblespiritualevils threateningus:openatheismpublicly warringagainstGod,orpseudo-atheism seekingtoturnthelivingGodinto someprotectinggeniusfortheState orsomedemonoftheRace.Ifthis isso,wemustadmitthatitisastern lessonforbelievers.
Letmesayimmediatelythatthis attempttobringmenclosertogether mayeasilybemisunderstood.I shouldthereforebeginbyclearingthe groundofanypossiblesourcesofmisunderstanding.Sucharapprochement obviouslycannotbeeffectedatthe costevenofstrainingfidelity,orof anylesseningofwhatisduetotruth. Noristhereanyquestionwhatever eitherofagreeinguponIknownot whatcommonminimumoftruthorof subjectingeachone'sconvictionstoa commonindexofdoubt.Onthecontrary,suchacomingtogetherisonly conceivableifweassumethateach givesthemaximumoffidelitytothe lightthatisshowntohim.Furthermore,itobviouslycanonlybepure,

Fundamentalnotionssuchasthatof theabsoluteonenessofGodhavenot thesamemeaningforaJewasfora Christian:norhasthenotionofthe divinetranscendenceandincommunicabilitythesamemeaningforaChristian asforaMoslem:northenotionsofa person,offreedom,grace,revelation, incarnation,ofnatureandthesupernatural,thesamemeaningforthe OrientasfortheOccident.Andthe "non-violence"ofthe.Indianisnotthe sameasChristian"charity."
Itiswellknownthat,accordingto theCatholicFaith,God,afterhaving spokeninvariousandimperfectways throughtheprophets,spokeonceand forall,inaperfectandfinalmanner, throughHisownWord,Whotook fleshinthewombofthevirginof Israelinordertodieformankind.The depositofthisrevelationoftheWord ofGodwasconfidedtoalivinganda
visiblebody,madeupbothofjust menandofsinners,butspeciallyassistedbytheSpiritofGodinitsmissionoftruthandsalvation.
ThusauthorityplaysamostimportantpartforCatholics.Butapart fromthedogmasandtheirconnected truthsandapartfromthediscipline ofsalvation,freedomplaysabigpart also,andthediversityofopinionin humanaffairsisfargreaterintheCatholicChurchthanisgenerallyrealisedbythosenotinit.Iknowthat theteachingsoftheCatholicChurch candealwitheverymatterconnected withfaith,butinbeinginternally mindfulofthisteaching,Icanstill disagreemostsharplywithotherCatholicsaboutpoliticalorsocialmatters.Democracy,tradeunionism,the latewarinSpain,theSecondWorld War,aswellasphilosophicalorhistoricalquestionsareincludedhere.It isonlytothepurityandintegrityof thewordofGodthatthefaithfulare boundassuch.
Theteachingauthorityofthe Churchintendsofitselfonlytosafeguardthislivingdepositoftruth,just asthedisciplinaryauthorityofthe Churchhasnootherobjectthanto enablethefaithfultolivebythat truth.ItistotheFirstTruthinperson,speakingtomyheart,thatIadherebymeansofthestatementsof dogmathatbringtherevelationtoall. AsaCatholicandbymyCatholic Faith,Iamboundinconsciencetono human,theologicalorphilosophical opinion,howeverwell-foundeditmay be,andstilllesstoanyjudgmentson contingentorworldlymatters,orto. anytemporalpower.NoramIbound toanyparticularformofcultureor civilisation,andstilllessofraceor blood.Iambounduniquelytowhat isuniversalityitselfandsuper-universalitytotheDivine,tothewordsand preceptsofHimWhosaid,"Iamthe TruthIwhospeaktoyou."Thisin briefishowtheCatholicoutlookappearstome.

To-dayisbeingcelebratedbytheCatholicChurchinthisdioceseas SocialJusticeSunday.Forsomeyearsnowthisannualoccasionhasbeen linkedwiththepublicationofaStatementonCatholicsocialteachingwith theapprovaloftheHierarchy.InpastyearstheseStatementshavebeen widelyreadandfavourablycommenteduponinallquarters.Onehundred andthirtythousandcopieswerecoldoflastyear'sdocument,andthedemandforthisyear'sStatement,entitled"PatternforPeace,"hasalready farexceededthatofthepreviouspublications.Imentionthisonlytoillu stratethegrowinginterestamongstAustraliansgenerallyintheproblems ofthesocialandeconomiclifeofthenation,andinthegeneralplanofPost WarReconstruction.
Itoftencomesassomethingofashocktotheman-in-the-streetto learnthattheCatholicChurchissovitallyandintelligentlyinterestedin thequestionofsocialjustice.ItistheCatholicChurch,forexample,that foryearshasgiventheleadintheagitationforafamilywageinplaceof thepresentunsatisfactorysystemofthebasicwage.ItistheCatholic ChurchthatisevennowgivingtheleadinadvocatingIndustrialCouncils orbodiesconstitutedbytheStatewithadequatepowerstocontrolallthe operationsofaparticularindustry;councilscomposedofequalnumbersof representativesofemployersandemployees,andofanyotherinterestswhich maybeinvolvedintheindustry,withaPresidentappointedbytheCommonwealthGovernment.
Thenthereisthequestionofpopulationandpracticalremediessuggested bytheChurchtocheckthepresenttrendwhichmustresultinafewyears inthevirtualself-annihilationofourpopulation.
Finallytwovitalquestionsuponwhichthewholesocialpolicyofthe nationmaybesaidultimatelytodependandtowhichtheCatholicChurch appliesHerteachinginformulatingtheirsolution,are(1)theorganisation ofthecreditstructure,and(2)ruralreconstruction.
InspiteofthefactthatCatholicsocialteachingissolittleknownand understood,itisfarmoreadvancedthanmostmenimagine.AsIsaid lastweek,noteventhetradeunionsextendtherightsoftheworkerasfar asthePopesintheirgreatsocialpronouncements.Nonehavebeenmore outspokenintheirfearlesscondemnationoftheabusesofCapitalismthan thePopesofrecentyears.Yet,ontheotherhand,theChurchhasalways taughtthatclass-warfareiswrong,thatSocialismiswrong,that'Communismisnotonlywrongbutthegreatestmenacethatcanthreatenanynation.
Isupposethisishardlytheopportunityonemighttaketoexplain somethingoftheChurch'ssocialteaching-onecan'tpickatitpiece-meal, andanoddsessioncouldonlygiveyouaveryinadequateideaofjusthow comprehensive,far-reachingandadvancedHerteachingis. However,I shallstillbepleasedtopostfreetoanyofmylistenerswhocaretowritein forthecopiesoftheseStatementsonSocialjusticeandReconstruction thatembodytheapplicationofCatholic-socialprinciplestotheproblemsof themoment.

Inanapocalypticupheaval,which imperilstheveryfoundationsoflife, theadventofmentoanewageofcivilisationisthusbeingprepared,which doubtlesswillindicatenotonlyanhis toricaltransformationofgreatimportance,forgoodaswellasforevil,in theformsofconsciousnessandculture, butalsothecomingofahigherstate ofunityandintegration.Theworld itselfisservingmenanawfulsummons,andthissummonsisprimarily addressedtothosewhoarebelievers.
Thefuturewillbeneitherforthe worldnorforreligionunlessthosewho believeunderstandwhatisfirstand foremostrequiredofthem.Ifthose verymenwhoproudlyweartheinsigniaofthespirit,allowtheirsoulsto becomesubjecttothoseforcesofdestructionwhichdesperatelysetevil againstevil,andiftheyenlistreligion -even,assomemaysay,initsown interest-inanyundertakingwhatever ofdominationandviolence,Ithink thatthedisasterforcivilisationwillbe irreparable.
Ifwespeakthetruthwithoutdoing it,weruntheriskofleadingmentoregardtruthasanimposture.Ithas beensaidagainandagaininrecent times,andrightly,thatthebeliever isspeciallycalledupontoconfesshis Godinsocialandtemporallife,inthe hardworldofmen.Manythings whichheacceptsto-dayintheearthly stateofhisfellowsandintheconditionsofhumansocieties,willappear laterontobeaslittleworthyofacceptanceasnowseemstoustheslaveryofantiquity.Thetragedyofunemployment,thetragedyoftherefugeeandthe"emigre,"thetragedyof thewar,aresymptomsofadisorder wemusttirelesslyworktoremedy.
Letusexaminethefourthandconcludingpoint,theanalogicalsimilaritiesinbasicprinciplesandideaswhich arerequiredfortheco-operationof menofdifferentcreedsinthetemporal order.Thepracticalproblemsconnectedwiththerelationshipbetween thespiritualandthetemporal,and theirpracticalsolutions,aresomuch alikefortheOrthodoxChurchinthe SovietUnion,fortheCatholicChurch andProtestantcommunitiesinGermany,thattheexperienceandtestimonyofbelieversbelongingtothe differentChristianfamiliesare,with theirsufferings,akindofcommonpro- perty.Letnoonedeceivehimself: thecauseofreligionandthecausesof thehumanpersonarecloselylinked. Theyhavethesameenemies.The timehaspassedwhenarationalism fataltoreason,whichhaspreparedthe wayforallourmisfortunescouldclaim todefendthepersonandhisautonomy againstreligion.

WhenProfessorFoxsaidthat"Christianitymustbetaughtasbeingnaturaltomanandhispresentneedsand knowledge,"thereisdangerofmisapprehension.Naturallyinthebriefpress reportanadequateoutlineofanymodificationstheProfessormayhavemade "ofhispublishedstatementwouldnot begiven.ButitisobviousthatChristianity,beingasupernaturalreligion, isnot"natural"toman.Itmakesdemandswhichhisunaidedhumannature ofitselfisquiteunabletomeet.Hence thenecessityofDivineGracetosupply thedeficiencesofnaturebroughtabout byOriginalandactualsin.Again, Christianitymayanddoesilluminate allbranchesofknowledge,butitsreceptionorpreservationdoesnotdependonknowledge,butontheDivine infusionofFaithinthefirstinstances, andontheincreaseofGracethrough prayerandtheSacramentalsystemin thesecond.
ProfessorCameron'ssuggestionofa courseofcomparativereligionmightbe usefulforstudentswhowerethoroughlygroundedinthecompletebasic truthsofChrist'sreligion,anditspractice.ForitiscertainthatChristianity,evenfromapurelynaturalestimate,isimmeasurablysuperiorto otherreligions.Indeeditcannotbe classedas"one"ofthemanyreligions. Itisunique.Butperhapsitstrue naturewouldbeshowntogreateradvantagebyastudyofitshistorythan byanycomparisonwithanythingelse. Thereisnoparityinanyparallel, thereisnocommondenominator.
Finally,ProfessorCameron'sadvocacyofa"restatementofChristianbeliefaccordingtomodernneeds,"must beproperlyunderstood.SinceChristianitydoesnotdependuponknowledgeforitstruth,itsauthorityand itssanctions,sononewavenueof thoughtcanchallengeitsteachings. Therecanneverbeaquestionofchange a
initsfundamentalclaims,becauseitis aseternalasGod,itsFounder.Butits preciseapplicationtoparticularproblemsofhumanexperiencehastobe madeclearfromtimetotime.And itisherethattheabsolutenecessityof anauthoritativeinterpreterbecomes manifest.WhoistosaywithuttercertaintyhowtheteachingsofChristapply anddonotapplyinspecificinstances?
Thisbringsmetothepointthatthe employmentoftheterm"Christianity" isactuallymeaningless.Itisafiction calculatedtosmoothoverdenominationaldifferencesoncertainoccasions. Itisafictionbecauseitpresupposesa commonbodyofcertainbeliefwhich inpointoffactdoesnotexistoutside

theCatholicChurch.Itimpliesa unitytowhichthewarringcreedsgive theliedirect.Andthisisthecentral, obstacletothebreakingdownofsecularismintheschools.Thereisno suchthingasanundogmaticChristianity,andifChrist'steachingistobe broughtintotheclass-roombysubmittingthevariousconvictionsofthe sectstoacommonindexofdoubt,it mightbeaswelltoleavethingsas theyare.Secularismcouldbekilled bythecompleteteachingofChrist,but itwouldonlybestrengthenedinits contemptbyawaterycommondenominatorofChristianbeliefsbasedon compromise.
Thestrangestcontributiontothe Conferencereportedinthepresswas madebyanAnglicanclergyman.The Rev.Dr.H.R.Trenamanisreported assayingthat"thesecondaryschool boyshouldbegivenachanceofconsciouslyacceptingorrejectingChristianityasaphilosophyoflife."TheobviousretorttothisisthatGodgotin firstwhenHegaveevensecondary schoolboysthegiftoffree-will.It seemstomethatthereisnooccasion togiveaboy"achance."Healready hasitinhisnature,andnopowerin heavenorearthcanpreventhisrejectingChristianityifhesodesires. Buttosetoutdeliberatelytohavehim choosesavoursofsuggestingtohim thatitmightbearationalthingto rejectChristianity.Perhapsthereligiousinstructionperiodistobefollowedbyananti-religiousperiodinthe manneroftheSoviet'sconceptionofreligiousliberty.Catholicscallthisdangerousbusiness,destroyinggoodfaith.
AndthereissomethingintheScripturesaboutscandalisinglittleones.
CSTRALIA'Schiefperil,'apart fromtheminionsoftheSonof Heaven,isthatwemayfinishupwith theverysystemwesetouttodestroy. Itseemsnevertooccurtohimtoband togetherwithhisfellow-citizensand themselvesrightthewrong.Therehas beennoattempt,orverylittle,atcooperativeaction.Yetinthisthing EuropeandAmericahavefounda remedyfarmoreeffectiveandlasting thananyStateaction.Co-operation istheverykeynoteofCatholicsocial action,becauseitmeansgovernmentof industry,agricultureregions,etc.,by thepeopleconcerned.Itisself-governmentinarealsenseandafunctionaldemocracyatitsbest.
Thisleadsmetoconsiderthatsectionof"PatternforPeace"whichdeals withmeasuresforincreasingAustralia'spopulation.Thesecondrecommendationinthisregardisa"vigorouspolicyofhousingadaptedtothe needsofthefamily."Itisgenerally agreedthatanationalpolicyofhousingmustbeembarkeduponinthe post-warperiod.But"Patternfor Peace"doesnotstatewhoseresponsibilitythehousingproblemisorby

AScandinavianbybirth,hewas servingwiththeBritishNavywhen oneday,in1820,sailorlike,hefound himself"broketothewide"aftershore leave,andpressedfortimetoreturn tohisship.Sohejog-trottedthecoach routefromLondontoPortsmouth, coveringthedistanceinsevenhours. LaterhedidLondontoLiverpoolin 32hours.

WhenSt.PeterandtheApostles cameforthfromtheupperroomin JerusalemonPentecostSunday,they foundthemselvesinacitycrammed withpilgrims Jewswhocamefrom
culttounderstandthemisgivingsof theearlyJewishconvertstowardsthe receptionoftheGentilesintothenew Church.Ittookamiracletobring aboutthechangeofheart. St. Peterhimselfadmitsthathehada naturalrepugnancetoextendingthe privilegesofthefaithtotheGentiles. InavisionGodshowedPeterasheet inwhichwerethecleanandunclean animals-symbolicaloftheJewsand Gentiles-thesheetrepresentedthe Church.GodbadePetereat,but Peterhesitated,andforthisGodrebukedhim,saying"ThatwhichGod hascleaneddonotthoumakecommon."Themeaningofthevisionwas madecleartoPeterwhenalmostat onceadmissiontothefaithwassought bythefirstGentile,CorneliusThus wastheuniversalitytheChurchestablishedandwithitthebrotherhood ofman.

Lawlorstoodinthepulpitofachurch inMountMellick,Eire,andtoldhis congregationhowtogetarmstofight theR.I.C.,whichweremostlyIrishmen andgoodCatholics.Theadvicethe peoplegotwasthateveryonetheykilledtheyhadhisrifletocarryonwith, andagreatmanyofthosemenofthe R.I.)'.werekilledgoingorcomingfrom churchonSundayandweekdays,and evenshotfrombehindchurchdoors. Sir,-Inrecentissuesof"TheRecord"Inoticedcriticismsfrom"Kerry" and"City-ite"regardingyourleading article,"TheGreenRevolution."I wishespeciallytotakeissuewith "Kerry."Hecriticisesyoureditorial firstlyonthegroundsthatitwasmad afteronlythreedaysofanenquiry whichwillprobablylasttwelve months.Thisheconsidered"extra ordinarilystrange."Buthisownat-
tackonthepeasanttraditionchal lengessomethingwhichisinherentin thenatureandhistoryofmen.Mass production,specialisedfarmingrepre sentsthreedaysofthemoderntrifling withlife,whiletheimmemorialpeasantryrepresentsthewholestable storyofagriculturalman.Thehistoricalargument"Kerry"verywisely passedoveras"toosubtle"forhimto understand.Itisaboutassubtleas thenoseonthehumanface.
"Kerry"thenproceedstotalkabout farmers"beingforced"intotheposition ofpeasants.Thisisacompletedistortionofyourarticle.Thefactthat youclaimedtherevolutionmustcommenceinthemindprovesthisconch.sively.Hegoesontostatethatfarmersintheheavyrainfallareasleft there"toavoidapeasantexistence.' Thisisranknonsense,andisexploded in"Kerry's"verynextsentence,when hetalksof"greateropportunity"in otherparts.Inaword,theacquisitive instinctpromisingquickreturnswas toomuchforthemtoresist.Ifthe farmersofthisStatehavenobetter ideaofwhatapeasantryisthan "Kerry''has,youSir,andI,arewastingourtimewriting.Nobodyinthis Stateatanytimehasproposedtoeatablishapeasantry,norcouldtheyreasonablydosowhilethecreditstructure andthecapitalisteconomypersist. As"PatternforPeace"shows,apeasantrywoulddependlargelyonajust andrationalsystemofagriculturalcredit,regionalism,andtheprovisionof localmarketsandlocalsecondaryindustries.Onlythewildestperson wouldimaginethatareforminone sectionofthesocialspherecouldsucceedwithoutcorrespondingreformsin thewholefabric.Thisconsideration lendspointtoyourcriticismofthe sectionalviewsof"experts.' Thisisthepointatwhich''Kerry" hasgonehopelesslyastray,anditinvalidatesthemajorpartofhisletter. Anotherinterestingcharacterthat enteredmylifewas Kallavan,a tree-refugeeintheAnamalaiorElephantHills,inSouthIndia.Towards theendofNovember.1937,ourArchaeologicalexpeditiontothesehills hadjustenteredthejungle,andwe wereabouttocrosstheThoraikadvu river.InonehandIheldastrong staff,theotherwasclaspedbyold
Kallavansknottyhand,andweboth fordedtheriverwithwateruptoour knees.ThisishowKallavanandmyselfwereintroducedtooneanother. Thesetwowhitemenhadcomefrom nigheruptherange.Ibroughtthem veryclosetothetusker,andthey bothfiredtogether.Twobulletswere foundintheelephant'shead.Now eachDoraitookawayonetuskwith him.Irememberonegentleman's name-'KatanDorai.'NowKatan DoraiwasnootherthanMr.Cotton, theleaderofourexpedition,whohad beenhuntinginthesesameparts28 yearsago.That2ft.bin.tuskholds aplaceofhonourinMr.Cotton'sdrawingroom.Its2ft,bin.pairissomewhereelseinIndia.OldKallavan wasonegreatsmilewhenhelearnt thatthewhitemanwhosatbesidehim nowwasnoneotherthan"Katan Dorai"-thegreatShikaree.
Elephants,thetanksofthejungle,haddrivenKallavanandhisfellow refugeestotaketothetreetops,where theyhavebuilttheirAndersonshelters.ThePulyas,thetribetowhich Kallavanbelongs,arejunglenomads. Theyaretheaboriginalsofthoseparts. Theirvillageclustersofsimplehuts aretobefoundalongjunglestreams. Notfarfromsuchavillageyouwill findthetreesheltersbuilthighupon theforksofforestgiants.Atnight fromourtentswecouldspythebobbinglightsamongthebranchesand hearthecriesof"Anai,Anai,"accompaniedbythebeatingoftom-tomsand shoutsasKallavanandhiscompanions frightenedawaytheelephantsfromthe fieldof"ragi"ormillet.Theshoutinganddrummingwoulddiedown,and weknewthatforanhourortwomore thesetree-refugeeswouldhaveasnatch ofsleep-awelcomerestsandwiched betweenraids.
Tinyterracedfieldsof"ragi"clingingtothebanksofjunglestreamswere nottheonlymeansofsubsistancefor theserefugees.Beingchildrenofthe foresttheylivedonedibleleavesand fruits,rootsandbark,whichtheforest suppliedthemwithsolavishly.Salt wastheonlythingtheyneeded.True, therewasasaltlicknearby,butthe elephantsanddeerandtheotherwild animalsofthejunglehadkeptthislick astheirmonopoly.Kallavanledus tothislickandthereroundatiny brackishpoolwepickedoutthedainty footprintsofbarkingdeer,andsawthe tuskmarksoftheelephantsasthey dugatthesalt-bearingclayandmade itfallintothepool.Thetree-refugeeshadtofetchtheirnecessaryquota ofsaltfromtheweeklymarketinthe foothills.Toobtainthissalttheybarteredthehoneyoftheweeblackbees thatmadetheirhivesinthecrevices oftherocksorunderthebeetling ledgesofprecipices.Kallavanandhis kindslippeddownbambooladdersthat hungovertheserockycliffsa1,000ft.or more.Togetunderthebeetlingledges thetreerefugeeshaddevisedanovel plan.Theysuspendatriangular frameattheendoftheirbambooladder.Thisapparatushangsoverthe edge,andbymeansofswingingthe honeyseekercangetatthehive.Piom theoppositesideofthevalleyPT couldpickouttheseprecariousbambooladdersandthehai--rai.ing,triangularswings.Oneafternoonas werewerehikingpastthozcliffsold Kallavanshowedushowthejobof honey-gatheringwasdone.Imked

Andwhenourcaravantrekkedback tocivilisation,smilingoldKallavanled theway,alleyesandearsfortheleast soundthatmightbetraythepresence ofasolitaryelephantortocatchthe bellingofthesambhurhigherupthe spur.WhenwecametotheThorakadvuAr,theriverwehadforded togethersomedaysbefore,ourways parted.Theexpeditionwentbackto cars,tofactorywheels,andsnugwhite bungalosislookingdownonacresof teaandcoffee,butKallavanandhis2 companionstookthenarrowpathback tothewildsandtothetalltreesthat werehomestothem.
FarupNorthinwildChotaNagpur. thehomeoftheRoyalBengaltiger, 1metBalDeo,whoherdedcowsinhis ytuth,butwhonowdrivesaV-8.We metonthehighestpointoftheChota Nagpurplateau-Neterhat,3,000odd feetabovesea-level,anditwas10-yearoldMichael,oftheclanoftheLeopard,thatbroughtustogether.Michael was,andisstill,aherderofcattleat thefootofthisplateau-anaboriginal Uraon.OnemorningMichaelwasup atree,aMahuaIthink,andhewas gatheringthepreciousfruit.Abranch snapped.Michaelwaspickedupwith acompoundfractureinhisrightthigh. Beingamarketday,Michael'sfather hadnottimetorushhissontothe nearesthospital.Buttwodayslater Michaelwascarrieduptothecharitabledispensaryontopoftheplateau. Suddenlytherewasaclickandthe bonescametogether.WeputMichael inaListersplint,reachingfromunder hisarmtothesoleofhisfoot,andwe bandagedhimup.Therushtothe hospitalhadstilltohedoneandthere wasnocar!"Yes.Ihadit.Ihad seenacarknockingroundtheother evening,aFord:ifonlyIcouldgetat theowner.Iwentoverandtalked thingsoverwiththesubordinateMag- istrate,theownerofthecar,whowas ondutyupatthislonelyoutpostof theEmpire,And,thankstohim,the carwasMichael'sfortherestofthe day.Weproppedhiswoundedlegup onemptypetrolstinsandthenbeganthelongdrivedown,13milesofcrazy, zig-zaggingghat-road,beforereachingtheplains.Atthefootofthe plateauwestoppedtoallowPatras, Michael'sfather,togatherafewnecessariesforhisstayinthehospital withhisson.

Astimehasmarchedon,thecapacity forspeechhasextendedinwayswhich wouldhavebeenconsideredunbelievablesomefewyearsago-byradioand "talkies."
Sothatbywordofmouth,bybooks, papers,by"talkies"andradio,the worldisinundatedbycataractsof words.Frombeingablessingitmight easilybecomeanevil,ifithasnot alreadydoneso.
Inthemodernorganisationandtrend ofthingsmostofthesecataracts(of words)aredirectedintospecialchannels.Thewordsaresoarrangedas toconveyspecialmessagestoinfluencethehearersinaparticularmanner.Thisisnowknownaspropaganda,anditworksathighpressure. Theprintedwordatonetimeprovidedacertainvarietyofimageswith abackgroundofreligion.Butthat calledformentalactivity,sothatas themechanisationandstandardisation ofmanproceeded,itbecamegradually reducedtoheadlinesandpictures.It becamenecessary,too,toseizetheattentionbysensationalcaptionsifthe printedwordwastobeboughtand
