AmessageduringtheweekannouncedthattheAnglicanBishopof Adelaide,Dr.B.P.Robin,preaching onSundaylast(proclaimedadayof prayerbythePrimeMinister),said thathemustapologiseforprefacing hissermonwithwhatheconsideredto beanimproperuseofapulpitdedicatedtothepreachingoftheChristian Gospel, "Overayearago,"hesaid,"Iwas askedforpermissionfortheuseof thispulpittoappealforrecruitsfor thefightingforces.Irefusedonthe szroundthatthiswouldbeanimproperuseofaChristianpulpitandan exerciseofundueinfluence.Ishould refuseagainto-day.AndifIwould notusethispulpitforsuchanappeal formenIrefusetouseitonthesame groundsforsuchanappealformoney.

ThePrimeMinisterhasdirected thatto-daybesetasideasyetanother dayofprayer-tobeassociatedthis timewiththeneedofnationalsacrifice forliberty.Thereis,ofcurse,alag intheThirdLibertyLoan!

Nowthereis,too,justatendencyin allthisbusinessfor"thechurches,"as theyarecalled,tobeconsideredasa kindofreligiousdepartmentofthe CivilService-thatever-growingand almightybureaucracy.Oneringsa bell,issuesanotherofficememo,and "thechurches"gointoaction!

Thereisaninclinationalsoamong manyofoureconomicandeducational specialistsand"experts,-andamong certainpoliticalelements,todictate totheChurchherpositioninpublic affairsandinthelifeofthenation.

AndaproposoflastFriday'sreportof theirresponsibleravingsofaProfessoroftheSydneyUniversity .he subjectofreligiouseduationinour schools,Imightaddthatthesooner allthesepartiescometotheirsenses thebetter-forbothChurchandState.

Notthatthisinsistencesuggestsfor amomentthattheChurchdoesnot pledgeherfullsupportoftheGovernmentintheprosecutionofthewar.

Sheinsists,moreover.notonlyon herownsovereignrightsinthesematters,butalsoupontheequallysacred andinviolablerightsofthefamily, andoftheindividual-Catholicand non-Catholic.FortheCatholicChurch lookstothegoodofthewholecommunity;Shedefendstherightsofall men,menofallclasses,andevenmen

construction.Forallthesethingsare thedeepconcernofthe Church.

Ratheritispreciselybecauseofthis concernforthewelfareofthenation thatsheinsistsontherecognitionof Christianprinciplesinallmattersof morality-fromtheconductofindustrialdisputestothegrantingofdivorce;fromtheirreligiouseducation oftherisinggenerationtoherownabsolutefreedomofspeechandaction inthefulfilmentofherdivinemission.

Itisbecauseofherdeepconcernfor thefutureofAustraliathatshemarks theraritywithwhichthenameof Godisinvokedbyourstatesmenand politicalleadersinpublicpronouncements.Onemustpresumetheyare buttheproductoftheirtime.

ItisbecausetheCatholicChurch haseverbeenuncompromisinglyrealist thatsheissofearlessincondemning theabusesthataboundinourpublic andprivatelife. Realismshouldre-

mindus,too,thattanksandplanes andshellsarenottheonlyfactorsto bereckonedwithinthishourofdestiny.Inmorethanonesensethis youngnationstandsatthecross. r,,ads,hesitantastothepathshe shouldchoose.Itmustbeobviousto allthatintheuniversalturmoilofthe momentanewAustraliaisbeingborn. 1Vhetheritwillbewhatallmenhope fordependsonsomanythings.This muchatleastiscertain-therightsof GodandofHisChurchmustbeacknowledged,theprinciplesandteachingsofChristianitymustbeaccepted, andatrulyChristiannationmust emergefromthesocialrevolutionor evolutionthatwearewitnessingtoday.

Nevertheless,thefactthatweturn toGodatall,isevidencethatreligion isafundamentalthinginhuman nature,thatunderneathallelsemen realisetheyarenotsufficientunto themselves,andthatultimatelyinthe testinghourallthepaganismandmaterialisminwhichourcivilisationis steepedhasfailed,asyet,tobring aboutacompleteandpermanentapostasyonthepartofthemasses.And thatwillbringitsownreward.The Allies,assuch,havepubliclyacknowledgedGodandtherightoftheindividualtofreedomofreligion.That toowillbringitsownreward.And. finally,weCatholics,sincetheday thatthewarbegan,haveprayedinthe MasseachmorningforGodsguidance andblessing;everydayintheCatholic Churchhasbeenanationaldayof prayer,andwehaveofferedtheSon ofGodonouraltarstoHisEternal Fatherforourcountryandourpeople-andthatprayeraboveallelse willbringitsownreward,nowandin theyearsahead.Amen.

Noonecriticisesthecapitalistera forfailingtoproducewealth.Noera hasbeenimmensely,andindeedrecklessly,fecund.Itstriumphand monumentisintheverydemand whichreformersmake,claimingforall menbornastandardoflifewhich wouldhavebeenandwouldhaveseemedchimericalbeforethewealthofthe worldwassostupendouslyincreased. Capitalismhasdwelt,eventoomuch, ontherightsofpossession,becauseensuredpossessionisthebasisofitsenergy.Ithassoughttoenablemen toworkandplanandriskknowing thatiftheirventuressucceed,thirty yearslatertheyandtheirfamilies wouldenjoytheharvest.Whoever saved-theservantsavingwages,the shopmansavingprofits-didsowitha senseofassuredfuturepossession. Whenweareshockedattheinhumanityofthecriminallawofahundred yearsagoinitsdefenceofproperty. theexplanation,althoughnotthejustification,isthatasenseoftheabsolute sanctityofprivatepossessionhasbeen thefoundationofindustrialandcommerciallife,theairthatlifeneeded tobreathe.

Itisdifficultformentokeepseparateintheirmindsthingswhichare intermingledastheyareencountered inreallife.Surveyingtheindustrial past,weneedtodistinguishandabstracttheprinciplesofvaluewhich wewanttoretainaspartofoursocial policywhilereformingorabolishing theevildevelopments.Thenotionof possessionisgoodandfundamental, andmorethanevernecessaryindays whentechnicalimprovementsincommunicationandrecord-keepinghave greatlyincreasedthepressureofthe Stateuponprivatemen.TheprincipleofStateactioncanbeheldand appliedintwodifferentways:either byextendingthedirectactionofthe State,sothatitdecideswhataman

shalldotoearn,andwhatuseheshall makeofhisearnings;orindirectly,in ordertomaintainthebestpossible conditionsinwhichasmanymenas possibleshallachieveandmaintaina genuineindependence.Thissecondis undoubtedlytherightcourse,althoughitismuchmoredifficultthan thefirst.Itissodifficultto-daythat manyCatholics,naturallyledtoitby theirgeneraldoctrine,loseheartand takerefugeinpolicieswhich,infact, defeatthedearestaimsofCatholicsociology.

Oneofthegreatdefectsofthecapitalisteraistherecklesssacrificeofthe futuretothepresent,thefailureto conservewhatmaybecalledthecapitalvalueoftheearthasaproperty.

Thatisthekindofmatterinwhich Stateregulationinthelong-terminterestsofmankindisself-evidently rightandeasilyapplied.Otherdefectsofthefreemarketsystemare muchmorerecalcitranttoreform.The tendencytowardseverlargerunits, wieldingevermorepowerandmaking itimpossiblefornew-cornerstoenter thefield,isnoteasilyansweredby legislation.Americanhistoryshows thatlegislationandosomethin,,per haps,huti,nlyalittle.Itis,however,atreatmistaketodespisesmall advantages,andthegeneralpurposeof industriallegislationshouldbetofavourthesmall,thelocalandknown unit,againstthelargeanonymousone. Inbusiness,aselsewhere,thespirit animatingtheactivitiesmakesallthe differencetotheresult.

PopePiusXIIspeaksof"promotingthesocialspiritinone'simmediate neighbourhood,inthedistrict,theprovince,thepeople,andthenation,"as thegreatwayofChristianisingmot-l ernrelationships.Whatwastoocommonlylackinginthelastcenturywas thevigorouspublicopiniontakingan interestinthewayofcommerciallife wasconducted.Anexcessivesecrecy aboutallpaymentsandprofit,adeliberatecnintelligibilityofbalancesheets. theanonymityofjointstockcompanies,madeitmuchharderforthebusinessmanthanitwas,forexample,f.:,r thelocallandowner,tobeguidedby otherconsiderationsthanthoseof sheerprofit.Thelandowner,withthe eyesoftheneighbourhoodonhim, wantedagoodnameforfairandunavariciousdealing.Generationafter generationofmenhavegoneinto+he countinghousesofmoderncitiespreparedtofallinwithwhatevertraditiontheyhavefoundestablished,and therehasbeennothingbutlossfrom thesuccessfuldepersonalisationandabstractionofthecommercialworldfrom thepublicgaze,andfromthesteady pressureofdoctrinalChristianity.

Themostfruitfulwayofproceeding isbyapproachingthoseissuesseparatelyandoneatatime,withareadiness tousedifferentmeasuresaccordingto thenatureoftheindustryoractivity, hutwiththeoverulinggeneralintentionthatthepatternofsocialpressure shallbeonewhichhelpsmentoagenuineindependence.Thegreatargumentagainstdefeatisminhopingfor

thisisthatinfactthetotalvolumeof wealthisincreasingallthetime.What wedecidenowwilldeterminethesocietyofthelaterdecadesofthiscentury.Itwouldbeathousandpities if,throughimpatienceortimidity,we tooktheeasydownwardslopeintoa generaldependenceonofficialdom, whenthecurveofmaterialprogress shouldhaveledtothecreationof moreandmoreprivateownership.

Ourancestors,whoobjectedsovigorouslytoacensusbeingtaken,scentedthecomingtyrannyofstatistics; andwhentheyobjectedtoanincome taxofsixpenceitwasbecausethey knewtheywereadmittinganewprinciplebywhichaman'sincomeceased tobeasecretfromtheGovernment. Themostpessimisticdidnotthinkthat halfacentury,aidedbythreewars, wouldcarrythesixpencetotenshillings;andtothecompleteseizurebytheStateofallincomesinthehigher range.Thepacehasbeenveryrapid.

TheStatehasnowbegunontheweeklywagesoftheworkingclass.The fourpenceitbeganbytakingthirty yearsagosoonrosetojustundertwo shillings.Amidgeneralacclaim,it isnowrecommendedthattheState shalltakemorethandoublethat,and

givemorethandoubleinsurancebenefits.Onlysimpletonscanimagine thatthistendencywillsuddenlystop.

Compulsoryinsurancehasbeenacceptedthesemanyyearsnow,butthe extensionshouldnotbeacclaimedas bringingpropertyinthesenseinwhich Catholicteachingvaluesproperty.That kindofindependencemustbesought alongotherandmoredifficultpaths. Thelineofleastresistanceandquick resultsistoimposetheStateasasuper-businessoverthealreadylargeand inter-relatedbusinessformations.Large astheyare,farastheamalgamation andtheexchangeofinformationabout workershasgoneinmanycallings, thereisyetagreatdifferencebetween thesegroupsandtheState,andmost workersaremuchfreerasagainstthe largestemployerthantheywillever bewhentheirsocialsecuritycardis hostagefortheirgoodbehaviour.

ThepopularconfusionbetweenanythingwhichreallycanbecalledindependenceandtheseconditionalState benefitsisaconfusiononlypossible wherethetraditionofownershiphas alreadygrownverythin.Itisimpossiblenottonoticehowmanypeopleto-dayaredominatedbyvisual imageswhichexcitetheiremotions andblurtheirsight.JustastheIndustrialRevolutionnowsocommonly evokesonlyimagesofitsworstfeature,sofor theperiodbefore 1939evokesonlypicturesofthedistressedareas,oftwomillionsunemployed,or,asasymbolofpoverty amidstplenty,ofcoffeebeansburnt inBrazil,orfishthrownbackintothe sea.Alltheseweremajorquestions, callingforbiggerremediesthanwere applied.Theyweretheappropriate fieldofStateactionandpublicenterprisewhichshouldbereservedandinvokedasandwherestressesand strainsoccurinthegeneralhugenetworkofworkandexchangeatahigh levelofspecialisedactivity.But thatnetworkisthegreatessentialrealityofthemodernworld,whichmust continueifthehighstandardoflivingistogoonandtogoup.The greatcharacteristicoftheperiodbetweenthewarswasnotthebreakdownsinthisplaceorthat,noteven thefinancialcrises;itwastheimmensevolumeofspecialisedactivities andexchangesgoingoninavast market.

IthatProfessorJohnAnderson, addressingtheNewEducationFellowship,isreportedassayingthatteachersshouldresenttheintroductionof religionintotheeducationalcurriculum.Religioustraininginschools,he asserted,wouldresultinpoliticalexploitation,whilereligiousdoctrines wereadirectassaultuponthechild's commonsense.Itwasalsonotwithoutsignificancethattheonlysupport theProfessorreceivedwasfromMr.J. Lindsay,oftheLabourResearch Bureau-aformerwell-knownCommunistinourlocalUniversity.Mr. Lindsaysaidthatinanidealsociety wherepeoplewouldhavearational approachtothings,philosophyinstead ofreligionwouldbetaught.He thoughtProfessorAnderson'sviews weretrueenough.Whetherreligion wasrightorwrong,therewasatendencyinschoolstomixupreligion ',withnaturalscience.

Ontheotherhand,ProfessorAnderson'sviewshavehadaverybad reception.Hehasbeenseverely criticisedbytheRectorofSt.John's (*ollege(Catholic),Sydney;bythe Rev.A.R.Ebbs,oftheChurchof England;byProfessorFox,andby Mr.D.B.McDonald,M.L.A.,andthe LeaderoftheOppositioninNewSouth Wales.FatherThompson,oftheCatholicCollegewithintheSydneyUni".versity,describedProfessorAnderson'sremarksas"absolutenonsense." Religion,hepointedout,doesnotseek toentertheeducationfieldbyaside door;itclaimsthewholefield.The mainpurposeofeducationistomake peoplereligious,andhecouldnotsee howpoliticscameintoitatall.

EvenofthefragmentsofProfessor Anderson'sspeechgiveninthelocal pressmuchmightbesaid.Inthe firstplace,teacherswhohaveatruly philosophicaloutlookoneducation wouldbynomeansresenttheintroductionofreligionintothecurriculum. Theywouldrealisetheirstatusimmediatelyasstewardsfortheparents. Itistheprimaryrightandresponsibilityoftheparentstosaywhatkind ofaneducationhischildshouldreceive.Atthesametimeitistrue thatparentshavelostsightoftheir rightsanddutiesinthismatterand tendtolettheschoolsdoastheylike. InasaneplanofthingsliketheCatholiceducationsystemthereisvery littledangertobeapprehended.But inthesecularschemeofthingsa bureaucracymightveryeasilydevelop totheexclusionandperhapsthedefianceoftheparent.

WhattheProfessormeantbysayingthatreligioustrainingwouldresult inpoliticalexploitationisnotatall clear.Perhapshehadaneveonthe Catholicschoolsandtheirclaimfor justiceinthematterofdoubletaxation.Orperhapsheseesthatour ,.hool,areturningoutyoungpeople withanappetiteforjusticewhoare

goingtodemandtherestorationof Christianprinciplesinpubliclife. NaturallytheProfessorwouldnotlike that.

Thetroublewiththesecularised mindwithitssegmentationofhuman activitiesisthatitcannotbegintobe philosophical.Itcannotattempta synthesisoflifebecauseitcannotsee lifeasawholewithitsvariousplanes ofreality,distinctyetcapableofharmonising.Religioustrainingwill necessarilycauseachildtoviewpublicaffairsinaparticularway.But whattheProfessorcannotseeisthat hissystem,secularism(oranti-reli-

gion)willlikewisecolourthechild's wholeviewoflife.Nomancanescapehisphilosophy.Andifhistory andtraditionmeananything,thecase fortheChristianschemeofthings againstthesecularistisoverpowering.

Asforreligiousdoctrinesassailinga child'scommonsense,theProfessor wouldhavedonewelltoexplainhow Christianityhassurvivedifinevery generationfor2,000yearsithasbeen teachinganunvaryingbodyofdoctrinewhichwasopposedtocommonsense.Andif,ontheotherhand,the bluff,rationalwayofsecularismhas beensound,howisitthatitstheories anditspracticalexperimentsare scrappedeveryfewyearsand.newand contradictoryideassubstituted.Change mightwellbemadethetest.Religion remainsconstantbecauseitistrue. Secularismisinconstantneedof changeandrestatement,becauseitis false.Ithasnotbeenabletofool allthepeopleallthetime.Indeed itisonlybecauseitisablebyaseries ofshamelessacrobaticstofoolsomeof thepeoplesomeofthetimethatit managestosurvivefromonegenerationtoanother.Evenso,itssurvival valueisnothigh.

TheconcertonFriday,March26,was ahugesuccess.Thereweresome500 peopleintheaudience,whichwasreallymorethanthehallcouldhold,and extraseatshadtobebroughtin,and eventhenpeoplewerestandingboth upstairsanddown.

Theconcertbeganwithafewwords ofwelcomefromourChaplain,Father Lalor,whoalsogaveaverybriefoutlineoftheworktheC.G.M.isdoing.

Therewereseveralsoloitems,consistingofdancing,recitations,and songs,aswellasaScenefromShake:peare,twomimedskits,orchestra, verse-speakingchoir,dancebandand choir.

Oneofthe"highlights"oftheeveningweretheHarmonists,aseptetteof voices,whogaveanexcellentrenderingof"TheCuckooClock"and"Mosquitoes."

Thesixthannualmeetingofthe PerthDiocesanUnionoftheHoly NameSocietywasheldonMonday evening,March29,inthetheatreof theChristianBrothers'College,Perth. ArepresentativegatheringofSpiritual Directorsanddelegatesofmetropolitanbranchesattended,andwerefavouredbythepresenceofHisGrace theArchbishop,whoremainedthroughouttheproceedings.

Notedamongstthosepresentwere Rev.FatherLynchandsixdelegates fromNorthambranch,whosepresident (Mr.E.Grant)waspreventedbyillnessfromattending.Severalother countrybranchesendeavouredtosend delegates,butwerepreventedbytransportandmanpowerdifficulties.

ThemeetingwasopenedbytheDiocesanDirector(Rev.FatherLalor) withtheSociety'scustomaryprayers, ThereuponthePresident(Mr.E.LeB. Henderson)formallywelcomedHis Grace,thankinghimforhonouringthe meetingwithhispresence,forhaving initiatedtheHolyNameSocietyin WesternAustralia,andforhavingappointedsuchworthyDiocesanSpiritual Directors.

Therearesometowhomtheincidenceinthesameyearofthe firstcentenaryofFreemasonryandthefirstcentenaryoftheofferingoftheMassinWestAustraliamightseemasymbolandaportent.DespitetheprotestationsoftheCraftinEnglish-speaking countries,FreemasonrystillrestsunderabanoftheChurch.And itisaseasonableopportunitytoexaminethereasonsfortheCatholicopposition.PopularCatholicobjectionsbasedonthesecrecyoftheCraft,thenatureofitsoathsandritual,etc.,arevalid, butonlypartialandminoraspectsofthematter.Therootsofresistanceproceedalongtwowell-definedlines.Firstly,itunderminessupernaturalreligionofanykind.Itsrootdoctrine,accordingtothe"sacredauthors"oftheCraftisnaturalism-theselfsufficiencyofman.Thisnotionnecessarilyprescindsfromatrue morality,foritlacksadequatesanctions.Henceacodeofpurelynaturalethicsisinculcatedinmembers.Insuchaschemeof thingsChristianityissuperfluous.Whybotherwithcharity whenkindnesswillserve?Sinwillbeexcused.onthepleathat thesinneris"agoodsport"or"amanoftheworld."Humility hasnoplaceinnaturalism,formanandnotGodisthemeasureof things.Indeed,since schemeworkswithoutreference tosupernaturalrewardsandpunishments.GodHimselfmustgo intoexile.ThereisnoplaceforChrist.fortheself-sufficientman experiencesnoneedofredemption.

Nowitisveryunlikelythatactualatheismordirectattacks againstChristianityaremadeintheLodges.Nomemberis directlyseducedfromaChristianoutlook.Butasubstitutehas beenprovidedwhichoffersasimplerwayoflifeandinanyage, butespeciallyto-day,amanwilltakeveryreadilytoalineof lesserresistance.ItistruethatMasonicritualreferstothe "GreatArchitectoftheUniverse."ButMasonry's"sacred authors"donotrevealthatthisreferstoaPersonalGod.Itmight besimplyanallegoricaltitleunderwhichweregroupedandpersonifiedtheprocessesofnature.Inanycase,theideaofaPersonalGodisunnecessarytothephilosophyofnaturalism.The secondandmorereadilyappreciatedaspectofMasonryisitsdominationofinternationalfinanceandtheeconomicandcommercial strangleholditexercisesoverindividualnations.Thishasall kindsofrepercussionsinmatterssuchasemploymentandpromotiontokeypositions.Itisamostperniciousinfluence,because theconcentratedwealthoftheLodgesenablesthemtocoerceand tocorruptGovernments.Itistrue,forexample.thatFrancewas governedfromtheLodgesforverymanyyears.Itisalsotrue thattheMasonic"blacklists"duringtheGreatWarrobbedmany aCatholicofwell-meritedpromotion.

Itissignificantthatwhereverastrongmanhasarisentosweep outtheAugeanstableofLiberalism,hisfirstacthasbeentodissolvetheLodgesoftheGrantOrient.Andifthiswarisproductiveofnothingelse,ithasthisatleasttoitscredit,thatithas banishedtheGrandOrient-atleasttemporarily-fromEurope. ThelateDukeofConnaughtdeclaredonbehalfoftheEnglish lodges,onAugust29,1938,thatEnglishMasonrydoesnotknow anybutitsownkindofMasonry.Inviewoftheexcessesof ContinentalMasonry,itwasextremelyadvisabletodiscountthe GrandOrientasalesserbreedbeyondthepale.Butpriortothe presentwarEnglishFreemasonsstillofferedandacceptedthe hospitalityoftheGrandOrientwhenabroad.Someevenbecame membersofthemandoftheirsubordinateandaffiliatedsocieties.SomethingmorethanverbaldenialsofMasonry'suniversal onenessandsolidaritywillberequiredtocausetheChurchtolift herbanfromtheLodges,themoresowhilethetwomattersdiscussedaboveremainintegralpartsoftheMasonicfabric.

Thecontroversywhichhasarisenovertheuseofthepulpitfor thepurposeofstimulatingtheWarLoanreflectstheawarenessof theChristiancommunitiesofthegrowingpowerandambitionof theState.Italsoprovidesanillustrationoftheverypoornews serviceprevailingthroughoutAustralia.Itwasoddforthe"West Australian"tobeobligedtoreceivethefirststirringsofthecontroversyfromAdelaide,whencommentofasimilarbutmoretrenchantnaturevasnotonlybeingpreachedatthesametimefrom St.Mary'sCathedral,butwasbeingbroadcastovertheNational Stations!EventhebelatedentryoftheAnglicanPrimateintothe arenawasdutifullyreported,andlaterstillacross-sectionoflocal churchleaders.butaswegotopressnowordhasbeenprintedofr theCatholicprotestovertheair,norhasaninterviewbeensought withtheCatholicauthorities.

Itisamatterofprincipleandofgreatimportance,firstly,that thepulpitshouldbeexclusivelyemployedforthepreachingofthe WordofGod,andsecondly,thatspecialDaysofPrayershould notbethoughtlessly.arrangedsoastobringthemintopubliccontempt.Asforthefirstconsideration,thereisabsolutelynocall fortheemploymentofthepulpitforprofanepurposes.TheCatholicHierarchyofAustraliahaspubliclypledgeditswholeheartedsupporttotheGovernmentintheprosecutionofthewar, andwhateveristobedoneinthisdirectionisdonebytheBishops intheirciviccapacitiesoutsidethesanctuary.TheDaysof Prayerhavebecomefartoofrequent.andthismostrecentonewas arrangedwithahastethatwasalmostindecent.Thepointwas wellmadebyFatherLalorthateverydayintheCatholicCthurch isadayofprayer.Butthequestionof intercessionshould surelyhavesomehighermotivationthantheflaggingofwar finances.

THEGREENREVOLUTION.

Sir,-OurhopeistheGreenRevolution,certainlynotthe"Red."Green meansperennialyouth.ItisIreland'scolour.OftheIrish,aJesuit wrote:"Theyplacedtheirhandsto theirhearts,thenwithrecklessgenerosity,scatteredtheirhearts'blood overtheearth.Whereveritfellflowers sprangup,andlittlechildrenplayed."

So,ifAustraliansofIrishdescentget intothisrevolution,thisnewback-tothe-landmovement,wecanexpectsuccess. AstheEditorsays,theGreenRevolutionmustfirsttakeplaceinthe mind.Soletushavespecialcountry townsforourboys,withstarting pointslikeNewNorcia,Bindoon,etc. WehopetheJesuitFathersofSt Louiswillcontinuetheirholiday campsinthehills,withanaddedmotivenow-theGreenRevolution.

Australiansoldiers,campedinthe bushforsomeweeks,complainthatall theyseeis"trees,trees."Asoldier poetofthelastwarwroteoftrees:"I thingthatIshallneverseeapoemas lovelyasatree."

Onthissubject,St.Bernardsays: "Youwilllearnmorefromtherocks andTREES,thanfromthegreatest masters."Inotherwords,ifyou wanttolearnsomething,gointothe bush.Fantastic!Noonecansay Bernardwasjustahermit,muchless adumb-bell.Herewasamanwho foundedoverthreehundredmonasteriesthroughoutEurope.Adviserof PopesandKings,hepreachedthesecondCrusadeagainsttheTurks.His literaryoutputwasimmense.This wasBernardofthe"Memorare,"Our Lady'sman.Althoughhewasso muchinthethickofthings,hehasthis advicetoofferus:"GobacktoNature, withthespiritofFaith."Thetrouble is,wehaveneglectedtocultivate Nature,inmorewaysthanone.TerrifyingasNaturemayappear,shecan

beagreatmotherandteacher.Bernardwasevidentlyspeakingofhis ownexperiencewithMotherNature. Godmaynotbewiththebigbattalions,asNapoleonfoundouttohis cost,butHecanbeveryclosetothe manontheland.

Notmanyyearsagosomeyour: CatholicteachersfromSydneycame "West"toteach-inoneofourCatholic collegesinthebush.Thequantity ofbushtheysaw,anditssolitude,appalledthem.Whathappened?After afewyearstheywereloathetoleave theplacetheyhadlearnedtolove. Thebushhadwon-thebush,inan atmosphereoftheFaith.Landgirls. freshfromourcityoffices,sumup theirexperiencesoftheland:"It'sa greatlifethislifeoutofdoors."I> isdoubtfulifmanyofthesekidswill returntocityjobsafterthewar.So, youngmen,ifyouwanttobeonsomethinggoodafterthewar,getonto theGreenRevolution;it'sgoingtobe a"winner."

Sir,-Yourleadingarticleon "MoneyLendingandUsury'istimely, thesubjectbeingdealtwithinacapablemanner.Almostalloursocial evilsmax-betracedtointerest,particularlyfarmingandhomeownership. Interestformstheprofitstructurein alltradeandindustry.Ifinterest didnotexist,thismisnamedprofitof industrywouldremainintradeand industry,tobedividedamongstthose wholabourinindustry.Everyarticleofclothing,everybitoffoodwe consume,issaturatedwithinterest,so hethathasthelargestfamilypaysthe mostinterest.Imaintainthisisunjust.Tofixinterestat4,5,or6per cent,asageneralrate,isnotafairrate ofinterest.Asamatteroffactinterestatanyrateisunjust,although itmayseemtobefair.Sayaman (earning£500yearly)withwifeand twochildrenispayinginterestat6 percentona£500mortgageonhis home,andwealsofindanotherman (earning£250yearly)withwifeand6 children,alsopaying6percent.interestonamortgageof£500.Onhis financialabilitytopay,thelatter man'sinterestpaymentsbecomeusury, astheinterestdrawsfartoomuch fromhisearnings,anddenieshimthe righttogiveordinarycomfortsand educationtohisfamily.Interestrepresentsthatportionofourmoney systemwheresomepersons(investors)drawfromthecommunitymoney (interest)forwhichtheygivenolabourinreturn.St.Paulsays:"Hethat doesnotwork,neithershallheeat."Yours,etc., MOR-LITE.

MONETARYREFORM.

Sir,-Socialismwearetoldstandsfor theNationalisationofallthemeans ofProduction,DistributionandExchange.Now,whytinkerwithproductionwhenthereisnothingwrong withproduction?Ourproblemis NOThowtoproducefastenough,but howtosellfastenoughthegoodsthat canbemanufacturedsoeasily.

WhynotretainPrivateEnterprise withthissafeguard,thatthepriceof anarticleorserviceshouldbethecost ofproductionplusareasonableprofit? Neveranymorenoreverless.Apparentlyitistakenforgrantedthat eachindustrypaysoutenoughto buytheproductsofthatindustry.

Thatthepoororpoor,becausethe richarerich,andre-distributionofincomeswouldsolvetheproblem.This re-distribution,bytheway,istobe donebyanarmyofbeaurocrats.

AllthosewhoadvocatetheNationalisationofallthemeansofproduction,distribution,andexchange,must askthemselvesthesequestions:

1.IftheNationcontrolstheadministrationofabank,andnotthePOLICYofthatbank,willitissuemore purchasingpower?Itprobablywill not.

2.IftheNationistotakecontrolof allindustries,willitmakethemmore efficient?Itmightoritmightnot.

Itismorelikelytoadoptthe"take it,orleaveit"attitude.

3.EveniftheNationdoesitsown manufacturing,itwillstillhaveto solvetheproblemof"MARKETS,"and adefinitionofamarketisacollection ofpeoplewithmoneyintheirpockets.

Stressingthegreatimportanceof education,whichincludesspiritual, intellectual,civic,socialandphysical training,HisHolinessPopePiusXI, onDecember31,1929,publishedhis magnificentLetter"OntheChristian EducationofYouth"-"DiviniIllius Magistri,"asitisknownfromthe openingwordsoftheLatintext.He wishedittobeamemorialoftheGoldenJubileeofhisordination.Itisa monumentworthytostandwiththe othergreatsocialEncyclicals;forit setsdownthebasicprincipleswhich mustgoverneducationifweareto trainmenandwomeneagerandable tosetupaSocietybuiltonChristian socialprinciples,andsotoliveinthat Societyastosavetheirsouls.That isthepurposeofeducation.

TheLetteronEducationislittle known,evenincomparisonwiththe othersocialEncyclicals.Thismay beexplainedinpartbythedifficulty ofthesubject;fortoappreciatethis Letteronemustunderstandtheroot ideasofCatholicsocialteaching.Perhaps.too,the"official'styleofthe Englishmightdiscouragesome.It wouldbeagreatpityifsuchapoor reasonweretokeepfromusthewisdomoftheVicarsofChrist.

TheMissiontoEducate.

TheFamilyholdsdirectlyfromGod themission-andhencetheright-to educate.Thisrightmaynotbeviolatedbyanypoweronearth.Any systemisthereforeunjustwhicheither physicallyormorallycompelsparents againsttheirconscienceorlegitimate preferencetosendtheirchildrento certainschools.Theresponsibilityfor theeducationofitschildrenrestswith thefamily,whichisthereforebound toseethatitsrightsarerespected.

Theworkingsofgracearenottobe gaugedbynaturalmeasures.

Thereremaininmantheeffectsof originalsin:principally,disorderlyaffectionsandweaknessofwill.Methodsofeducationwhichexplicitlyor implicitlydenythisareunsoundand dangerous.

Thoseforgettheinbornweaknessof humannaturewhoholdthatyouth canbeforearmedagainstthedangers ofsensualitybyfoolhardyinitiation andprecautionaryinstructionforall indiscriminately,orbybeingexposed atanearlyagetotheoccasionsin order(asitisurgedtobestrengthenedagainstthem.Inthisextreme. lydelicatematter,ifinstructionbe foundnecessaryandopportune,it shouldbegivenprivatelybyonehavingauthority,andwithallthesafeguardstraditionaltoChristianEducation.

Agreatfusshasariseninthepapers oveithesuggestionoftheStanding CommitteeoftheFederalParliament onBroadcasting,thatcommercialstationsshouldprovidefacilitiesatrecognisedhours"bothforregular churchgoerswhoarepreventedfrom attending,andalsotoassisttoeducate listenerswhohavenothadthesame opportunitiesasotherstoappreciate theparamountimportanceofspiritual valuesintheindividualandnational life."

Letusfirstdealwithsomeobjectionswhichseemtouscompletelyinvalid.Thereistheatheistorrationalist,whodemandsequalrightsofexpressionfortheanti-religiousandmaterialistviewpoint.Heisanswered bypointingoutthatdisbeliefinthe spiritualnatureofmanlogicallyinvolveschangesintheattitudetosocialaimsandpersonalrightswhicn aredestructiveofprivatelifeandfreedom,andleadtototalitarianism. Thesehavenotbeenclearlyapparent inthepast,becausethehabitoflookingatmenasinacertainfashionsacredpersistedlongafterthebasicof thatsanctityhadpassedawayfrom thethoughtof"modernminds."The changehascomeatlast,however,and isexemplifiedintrendofsecularist thoughteverywhereinthedirection of"planned"economicandsocial orderswhichdenyrealpersonalfreedomintheprivatesphere.Inaword, thosewhowouldhavepersonalliberty whichisrathermorethantherightto electParliamentaryrepresentatives whohavelegal,thoughlittleactual, ontroloverthebureaucraticmanagingmachine-mustnow"opt"forGod andthelifeofthespirit.Thatis whattheCommissionmeanswhenit referstothe';importanceofspiritual values."

Thereissomesoundness,however, inthepleaagainst"blanketingtheair" between11and12o'clockwithChurch servicesonSundays,whichmight servelittlepurposeineducationand createagreatdealofantagonism,and thatnotexclusivelyamongirreligious people.TherearemanyCatholics,for instance,who-havingattendedMass intheirownchurch-wouldliketosit downafterbreakfasttohearmusic orsomethingelseofarecreational kind.Fortherest,thesentiment againstcompulsioninthismatterat certaintimesissolidlybasedonthe citizen'swishtoexercisefreedomof choiceinthematteroflistening. Largenumberswillchoosereligious broadcastsifleftalone,butwillresenthavingthempusheddowntheir throats.

cent.ofitsrevenuecamesolelyfrom membershipfeesofthePropagationof theFaith.Inanumberofdioceses thepercentageofmembershipwaswell abovethenationalfigureof27per cent.;consideringthenumberofmen inthearmedforces,consideringthe changesofpopulationfromcountryto city,etc.,coupledwiththefactthat theonlypopulationfiguresavailable areatleasttwoyear'sold,membershipenrolmentinquiteanumberof diocesesmustbealmostatsaturation point.

Ingeneral,thecompletelysatisfyingaspectoftheworkofthePropagationoftheFaith,atthepresent time,isthesolidworkthatisbeing done,fromyeartoyear,bythepromotersofthePontificalWork,inevery partofthecountry.Mostofthecreditforholding,fromyeartoyear,the

HolyChildhoodanincreaseofmore than60percent. Noteworthyinaveryspecialwayis therecordofthosedioceseswhich,duringthepasttwelvemonths,havefelt thesharpimpactofwar-Geraldton, Cairns,Townsville.Facedwiththe dislocationofwarconditions,ofthe evacuationofpopulationandtheclosingofschools,thesethreediocesesnot onlycontinuedtheirwork,butregisteredresultsfarinexcessofanything hithertoachieved.Theresultswere anextraordinarytributetotheDiocesanDirectors,tothepriestsand people,andtotheteachersinthe schools,

TheorganisationofthePropagation oftheFaith,during1942,notonly heldtheconsiderablenumberofmembersalreadyenrolled,butadvanced stillfurther.AttheendofJanuary, 1943,therewere267,148membersof thePropagationoftheFaith,anumberthatmarkedanincreaseof58,431 overthemembershipenrolledinthe previousyear.In1938therewere 63,410membersofthePropagationof theFaithinthewholeofAustralia. Thepresentmembershipfiguremeant that27percent.oftheadultCatholic populationofAustralia,good,badand indifferent,weremembersofthePropagationoftheFaith.

ThePropagationoftheFaithwas establishedonamembershipbasisin everydioceseofAustraliaatthepresenttime:infact,morethan80per

MildnessandTenderness andFineFlavourAlways.

Theconcludingbusinessofthemeetingwastheallocationof£10,9148sid, representingone-thirdofthePropagationoftheFaithfundscollectedin Australia,togetherwithspecialdonationsforAustralianMissions.This sumwasallotted,inaccordancewith theneedsandtheapplicationsofthe AboriginalMissionsinAustralia,the AustralianMissionofEasternPapua, andtheoutbackdiocesesofAustraha. Sumsofmoneywereallocatedforthe reliefandsupportofmissionariesand ofnunsevacuatedfromthewararea; moneywasprovidedfortheworkof theAboriginalMissionsatBeagleBay, thecareofthelepersatFantomeIsland,ChannelIslandandattheDerby Leprosaritrm.Fundsweremadeavailableforthepriestswhotravelalong theEast-Westline,andtherailroadto AliceSprings:forthepriestswholook afterthehalfamillionsquaremiles ofterritorythatcomprisestheDiocese ofGeraldton;forallthewidespreadresponsibilitiesoftheBishopofDarwin.

IneverypartofAustralia,in1943, CatholicswillbegoingtoMass,people willbereceivingthesacraments.lonely settlementswillseethepriest,because thesmallsacrificesofthemembersof thePropagationoftheFaith,during 1942,havemadethesethingspossible.

TheCathedralorganist,MissMargaretHanley,herselfanactive member,playedthroughouttheceremonyofconsecrationandlaterthe SolemnBenediction.

TheCatena,whichfollowed,wasrecitedbytheSpiritualDirectorto Comitium,Rev.FatherLalor,whopreachedtheoccasionalsermon. ThenwerereadtheclosingprayersandtheAciesconcludedwithSolemn BenedictionoftheBlessedSacrament.

AfterwardsLegionariesgatheredintheCathedralHallforafternoon tea.TheAcieswasagreatsuccess,andparticularlygratifyingwasthe numberofBrotherswhoattendedfromthenewlyformedCatholicSocial Guild.TheParochialPraesidiawereallwellrepresented,aswerethe CatholicGirls'Movement.Auxiliarymemberscamefromeverywhere, andFatherLaloraddressedhisremarksespeciallytothem.Last,but notleasttobementionedweretheSpiritualDirectorsoftheLegion whoattendedthefunction,theirinterestandencouragementbeing,as always,evidentandmostappreciated.

Allthisworkinthedioceseanda hostofotherthingsthatIhaven't timetomentionnow,isbeingdoneby 480-500ActiveMembers,andover2,000 AuxiliarymembersoftheLegion hereinPerth.Justoneortwofigures oftheworkdoneinthepast12. monthsuptolastDecember:634lapsedCatholicswerecontactedand124 werebroughtbacktotheSacraments andtothepracticeoftheFaith;6convertswerereceivedintotheChurch and3morewereunderinstruction. 2,500visitsweremade,forexample, tosickandinvalidpersons-Iwon'tgo throughthelonglistofstatistics,but youcanseethattheLegionisachievingsomething.Itisnotalltalk,not allprayer-itisprayerwithaction. Botharenecessary,bothmustbe there.Andthepointis,thatthere wouldbenoneofthisgooddoneinthe dioceseifitwerenotfortheLegionthewholeLegion-thecompleteLegion,composedofbothactiveandauxiliarymembers.

MydearLegionaries,ournationis atwar,totalwar.Thefrontlineand thehomefrontarebothintegralparts ofthewareffort.Youmusthavethe soldierandyoumusthavethemunitionworker,theoneisdependenton theother,butbotharevital-andso withtheLegion,wehavetheactive memberandtheauxiliary,onedependentontheother,bothvitallynecessary.Itisyourprayers,mydear auxiliarymembers,thatwinsuchunbelievableresultsthroughtheactive members;itisyourprayersthat carrythemthroughmanyamoment whendifficultiesseeminsuperable, whenthespiritualaspectbecomes temporarilysmotheredintheactivity ofthemoment-andthatisfatal,when ceaselessperseveringeffortseemsto bringonlyfailureandridicule,when theverymagnitudeofthetaskattemptedbecomestoofrightening,then inthesemoments,itisyourprayers thanwinthemthegraceto persevere.
