Inresponsetoademandwhichhasbeengrowingfuryears, ithasbeendecidedtoinaugurateaCatholicSessionoverthe air.ThiswillfollowalongthelinesofRev.Dr.Rumble'sSessionfrom2SM,Sydney,andtheCatholicHourinMelbourne.
AcommencementwillbemadeonSunday,28th.inst.,from 7.15to7.45p.m.,overStations6PRand6TZ,andsubsequently eachSundayatthesametime.Itishopedlatertolinkupwith anotherStation,thusincreasingtherangeofthepresent"hook.99
TheCatholicSessionhasbeenorganisedandfinancedby theCatholicSocialGuild,aneworganisationforCatholicmen, aimingtohaveCatholicprinciplesofSocialjusticeappliedinthe solutionofeconomicandothersocialproblems.
TheCatholicSessionwillbeconductedbyFatherLalor,who, priortostudyingforthepriesthood,wasawell-knownandpopularradiopersonalityinthisState.
TheSessionwillcoverthewholefieldofCatholicthought anddoctrine,fromdirectlyreligiousmatterstosubjectsofcurrentinterestonwhichCatholicteachinghasabearing.Itis hopedthattheSessionwilleventuallydevelopalongthelinesof aQuestionBox,andsoproveusefulinremovingprejudiceagainst theChurchbyprovidinginformationandansweringthedifficultiesofnon-Catholics.ButatthecommencementitwillbeconfinedtosettalksaboutmattersofCatholicbeliefandteaching.
Most,u,LessiulRadiofeatureshave beenbuiltaboutapersonality.And CatholicSessionshavebeennoexception.ThusAmericahadFather Coughlin,EnglandhasDr.Heenan, whileDr.RumbleandMr.D.G.M. Jacksonareknownfarandwidein VictoriaandNewSouthWales.

ducttheWestralianCatholicSession, llisGracetheArchbishopisfollowing alongsimilarsoundlines.Father Lalorhashadextensiveexperiencein radiowork.Beforeenteringuponhis priestlyvocation,FatherLalorwasassociatedwiththefoundationofStation6PR.Forsomeyearshewas engagedinannouncing,programme direction,theproductionofplays,and thedeliveringoftalks.Heismost popularlyrememberedthroughthe Children'sSession-"UnclePeterand Pongo"-andwhenheleftforRome manyachildintheStateexperienced somethinginthenatureofabereavement.

DOESTHE"OLDLAW"STILL BIND?
Hesaysthatweneednotbotherat allwiththeOldLaw.
Firstly,neitherExtremeUnction norprayersforthedeadbelongsnecessarilytotheOldLaw.Infact,ExtremeUnctiondoesnotbelongtoit atall,butispartoftheNewLaw, andisaSacramentinstitutedby ChristeverybitasmuchastheSacramentofBaptismwhichyourhusbanddoesaccept.ToacceptBaptismandrejectExtremeUnctionis aninconsistencyduetolackofknowledge,asweshallsee.Prayersfor

Myhusbandsaysthat,inhisopinion, everythingthathappenedbefore Christcamecouldbeleftoutofthe Bible,andthattheonlyvalueit hasishistorical.
Ihavealreadyshownthathisopinioninthismatterconflictswiththe expressteachingofChristwhomhe claimstorevereasthesupremeauthority.MuchthatisintheOldTestamentisincorporatedinthedoctrine ofChrist.But,inanycase,whatis thevalueofyourhusband'sopinion asanargumentfortherejectionof ExtremeUnctionandprayersforthe dead?Nonewhatever.Forifhe suggeststhatweshouldexcludethe OldTestamentandkeeptotheNew Testament,hewillstillbecompelled toadmitboththethingstowhichhe objects!Tocontinuetorejectthem, hemustsweepawaytheNewTestamentaswellastheOldTestament, andgiveupbeingaChristianatall.
WHENCECOMESEXTREME UNCTION.
IsExtremeUnctionderivedfromthe OldTestament?
No.ItisdescribedintheNew Testamentonly.IfyourhusbandacceptstheNewTestamentastheWord ofGodforChristians,hewillfind thesewordsintheEpistleofSt. James:"Isanymansickamong you?Lethimbringinthepriestsof theChurch,andletthemprayover him,anointinghimwithoilinthe nameoftheLord:'ExtremeUnctionmerelymeansalastanointing withoil,togetherwithprayerforthe sickperson.ThefactthattheApostleSt.Jamessaysthatitistobe done"inthenameoftheLord"shows thatthedutywaspartofthecommissiongivenbyChristtotheApostles.IfChristcommandedtheApos.

Thedutytoprayforthesoulsof thedeadisinculcatedintheOldTestament.ChristHimselftellsusthat therearesinswhichsecuretheirfull
offeringaprayerforthereposeofthe soulofhisdeadfriendOnesiphorus.. "TheLordgrantuntohimtofind mercyoftheLordinthatday,"he prayed.Commentingonthosewords, theRev.M.F.Sadler,anAnglican scholar,says,"Onesiphoruswasdead. Butwehavenoreasonatalltobelievethatthemomentasouldiesitis perfected.AndineveryChristian Liturgythathascomedowntous thereareprayersforthedepartedaskingofGodpeaceandrestforthem:' InanAnglicanmanualofdoctrineby theRev.VernonStaley,whichIhave bymeatthepresentmoment,Ifind thisstatement, isquiterightto prayforthedeparted."Yourhusband,therefore,hasnosoundreason forrejectingthepractice.
ANGLICANBURIALSERVICE.
Attheburialofhiscousinafewweeks agotheministersaidlongprayers overthecoffin.Whywasthis,if theChurchofEnglanddoesnotbelieveinprayersforthedead?
ST.JOHNTHEBAPTIST. remissiononlyafterdeath;thatmen, farfrombeingabletosinwithimpunity,willexpiatetheirsins,and willnotbeliberatedfromtheirexpiationtilltheyhavepaidthelast farthing.St.Jamestellsusthatwe mustprayforoneanotherthatwe maybesaved,andthatthecontinual prayerofajustmanavailethmuch. Ifwecanprayforthoseundergoing trialsinthislife,wecanprayfor thoseundergoingtrialsinthenextlife aftertheirdayofjudgmenthas broughtthembeforethetribunalof God'sjustice.Yourhusbandaccepts theNewTestament.Yettherewe findSt.Paul,inwritingtoTimothy,
TheBurialServiceintheAnglican BookofCommonPrayercontainsno actualpetitionstoGodonbehalfof thesoulofthedeadperson.Andit mustbeadmittedthattheChurchof England,undertheinfluenceofthe ProtestantReformation,didreject prayersforthedead.TheBurial ServiceinthePrayerBookwasnot thereforeintendedtobenefitthedepartedsoul,butmerelytosurround asolemnmomentwithsomeelements ofreligiousworship.ButAnglicans arebeginningtoseethattheabolition ofprayersforthedeadwasoneofthe manymistakesoftheProtestantReformation,andthatitwasquiteopposedtothewholetenorofSacred Scripture.Sotheyaretryingtorestorethepracticeofprayerforthe dead,evenastheyaretryingtoundo manyothermistakesintroducedby theProtestantreformers.Personally, IpreferredtojointheCatholicChurch whichdidnotmakesuchmistakes ratherthanremainintheAnglican Churchwhichistryingtoundoits mistakes,onlytofindthattheCatholicdoctrinewasrightafterall.And Ihopeandpraythatyourhusband willcometothesameconclusion,and alsoreceivefromGodthegreatgrace ('ftheCatholicFaith.

ORIGINOFBAPTISTCHURCH. HowandwhendidtheBaptistsoriginate?
ThefirsttracesoftheBaptistsappearedin1521.MartinLutherbegan theProtestantrevoltin1517.In 1521acertainThomasMunzersetup asaprophetonhisownaccount. claimingthatLutherdidnotgonearlyfarenoughinabolishingformer ideas.Hetaughtthatnoonewho hadbeenbaptisedasaninfantwas reallybaptisedatall.Hisadherents, therefore,hadtobebaptisedagain. Fromthishisfollowersgotthename ofAnabaptists,orthe"Re-baptisers." Itwasalmost100yearsbeforethis movementspreadfromtheContinent toEngland.Thoughtheygottheir ideasfromtheAnabaptists,theEnglishBaptistsdisclaimanyconnection withthem.ThefirstEnglishBaptistswereJohnSmythandThomas Helwys:andthefirstBaptistChurch wasfoundedinLondonin1611.John SmythhadbeenanAnglicanminister priortohisbecomingaBaptist,which hedidontheContinentowingtohis

associationswiththeAnabaptists there.TheBaptistChurch,therefore,tracesitselfbackto1611inEngland,andindirectlyto1521ontheContinent.Priortothatitwasnonexistent.YourBaptistfriendis thereforemistakeninthinkingthat hisreligioncamefromJohntheBaptist.liehasbeenmisledbyaname withoutgivingduethoughttothe facts.
* * ISINFANTBAPTISMWRONG?
Myfriendcontendsthatinfantbap. ismiswrong,andthatonemustbe anadult,andhavefaith,andunderstandbaptism.
ThatideaisbasedonamisunderstandingoftheNewTestament,and ofthenatureofbaptism.Baptists saythatintheNewTestamentconvertswererequiredto"believeandbe baptised,"andthattheonlypractice recordedisthebaptisingofadults.
But,obviously,whenanewreligion isfirsttaught,itmustbeaddressed toadults,andtheymustbeaskedto believeinthenewreligionbeforesubmittingtoitsrequirements.ButnowhereintheNewTestamentisthere thefaintestsuggestionthatadultsonly couldbebaptised.Ontheotherhand, Christexpresslysaid,"Unlessonebe bornagainofwaterandtheHoly Ghost,hecannotentertheKingdom ofHeaven."Andachildissomeone. ChristalsosenttheApostlestoteach andbaptiseallnations,andtheterm "allnations"certainlyincludesmen, women,andchildren.OurLorddid notsay,"Baptisetheadultsonlyof allnations."Morethanonceweare toldthat,whencertainadultswere converted,theyandalltheirhouseholdwerebaptised.Again,St.Paul tellsusthatbaptismforChristians replacescircumcision-yetcircumcisionaggregatedevenchildrentoGod's Chosenpeople.IstheNewLawtobe lessperfectthantheOld,containing nopurifyingriteforchildren?And ifallhumanbeingsbornofAdamare hornchildrenofGod'sanger,isAdam's sinabletoruinall,yetChristunable tosaveanyexceptadults?Therejectionofinfantbaptismisopposed tothewholetenorofChristianity. Butchieflythiserrorarisesfromthe lossofrightnotionsofgraceandof thesupernaturallifegivenbyChrist, andfromacompletemistakeconcerningthenatureofbaptism.
WHATBAPTISMDOES.
Iarguedthatinfantsshouldbebaptisedbecauseoriginalsinmustbe obliteratedinordertoenterthelife ofgrace.
Youcorrectlyinterpretedthemind ofChrist.Thesignificanceofthe Christianreligionismuchmoreprofoundthanmanynon-Catholicsthink. FormostProtestantsbaptismismerelyanexternalactassociatingthesubjectwiththeirChurch,andimplying aprofessionoftheChristianfaith. Theydonotthinkofitasactually givinganewprincipleoflifeinteriorly andwithinthesouloftherecipient.
YetthatistheCatholicidea,andthe realdoctrineofChrist,anditisessential.ChristwasGodwhodescended toourlevel,sharedourhumannature, anddidsoinordertoliftustoHis level,giveusashareintheDivine Nature,andrenderaheavenlydestiny possibletous.AsHetookourlife, HegivesHislife.HegivesHisby ourbaptismalregeneration.Every birthmeansalife.Wegotearthly lifebybirthofourearthlyparents. Wegetasupernaturallifederived fromChristbyre-birthinbaptism. Itmeansanewandspiritualvital principlewithinuswhichournatural Printing
birthcouldnotgiveus.Andchildren whohavehadnomorethantheirmerelynaturalbirtharewithoutit.Why shouldChristwhosaid,"Sufferlittle childrentocomeuntoMeandforbid themnot,"excludethemfromthisparticipationinthelifeofdivinegrace'
NEWCAPABILITIES.
Myfriendinsistedthatinfantscannot understandwhatbaptismmeans. Hedoesnotunderstandithimself. liehasnotrealisedthatamerelynaturalprincipleoflifederivedfromour earthlyparentsisquiteinadequatefor thedestinyofferedbyChrist.Tolive andexperienceourlifeinthisworld, theEternalSonofGodassumeda createdhumanvitalprincipleadapted toourconditions.Andifweareto liveandexperiencethedivinelifeof God,wecertainlyneedanewvital principleadaptedtotheconditionsof heaven.Foradivinedestinywe needadivinecapacity.Itisgiven bybaptism,andunbaptisedinfants aresimplyleftwithoutit.They couldneverthereforeexperiencethe happinessofheavenshouldtheydie intheirunbaptisedstate.Astronomerssaythathumanbeingsasatpresentconstitutedcouldnotpossiblylive ontheplanetMars.Theywouldhave tobereconstitutedandgivenaltogethernewcapabilitiesadaptedto Martianconditionsbeforetheycould doso.Muchmorewillman'ssoul havetobereconstitutedinorderto livethelifeofGodinconditions whichareinfinitelyabovenatural capabilities.Theadditionalandnew principlesoflifegivenbybaptismal re-birthmeansjustsucharegenerationorreconstitutionofthesoul. Butinfantsarequiteunawareofthis. Theyarejustasunawareoftheir acquisitionofamerelynaturallifeprinciple.Butthatdoesnotprevent theirgettingit.
INFANTSCANNOTBELIEVE.
How,then,cantheyaccepttheChristianFaith?Thatrequiresbelief, andtheyareincapableofbelieving. Thebeliefoftheparentsissufficient herejustasitissufficientforsomuch inthenaturallife.Theparentsbelieveontheirchild'sbehalfthatfood isnecessary,andgiveitfood.They believethatinstructionisnecessary, andgiveit.Theybelievethatsound moralsarenecessary,andteachthe goodprinciplestheyknow.They don'twaitforthechildtomakeupits ownmindonallthesethings.Later thechildwillknowandacceptforitselfthewisdomofthesethings.In thesameway,parentswhoknowthat Christistheway,thetruth,andthe life,chooseChristontheirchild'sbehalf.Theysettheirchild,whoisa continuationoftheirownlife,andin whomtheyliveoveragain,uponthe rightway:theyteachtheirchildthe truthofChrist;andattheearliest possiblemomentsecuretheimplantationofthelifeofChristinthechild's soulbybaptism.Lateron,thechild gladlyacceptsandratifiesthisgiftof itselftoChristasitgrowsintoanunderstandingofitsfaithandbeginsto liveconsciouslyaccordingtoitsprecepts.Anditisarealtragedythat, owingtomistakennotions,theBaptistsandothersallowsomanylittle childrentodiewithoutbaptismalregeneration,lackingthelifeChristalone cangive,andwhichnoearthlybirth canconfer,withtheresultthatsuch childrenareforeverincapableofattainingthesupernaturaldestinyreservedforthosetowhomasharein thedivinenaturehasbeencommunicatedbywaterandtheHolyGhost. ProfessingChristianparentswhoneglecttohavetheirchildrenbaptised doaninjurybothtoChristandtothe childrentheydepriveofthelifeHe desire,togivethem.

Noonewhowatchesthedevelopment ofreligiousactivitiesinGreatBritain canfailtonotethedangerthatthe centralChristiancriticismofmodern societymaybeoverlaidandlost throughaconcentrationofattention onmatterswhichareimportantin theirownsphere,butarenotimportantbycomparisonwiththegreatdebateaboutwhatkindofdoctrineof humannatureshouldbeacceptedas providingthebasisofsociety.
Thefirsthalfofthetwentiethcenturywillrankastheleasttheological ageinourhistory,thetimewhenthere wasleastseriousandinformeddiscussionaboutthetruthorfalsenessof theArticlesoftheCreed.Ithas been,andstillis,aperiodofsubjectivismandemotionalbelief,atimeof happyhuntinggroundsfortheamateurinventorsofsyntheticprivate creeds.Rutthepre-eminentnoteof thistimeisitspre-occupationwith materialconditions.Ourwayside shrinesareadvertisementhoardings, andthatreflectsanoutlookwhichalso threatenstodominatereligiousdiscussionandtoimposeaframeworkofassumptionswhicharisenotfromtheacceptanceoftheChristianclaims,but ornntheirrejection,astheonlysettingwithinwhichChristiansmay speak.TheChristiancriticismofmodernsocietyisafundamentalone,that itplaceshumanactivitiesinawrong orderbecauseitleavesoutofaccount thedutiesandrightswhichtaketheir risefromtheexistenceofthefirstCommandment.Thiscriticismisthemost importantthingthatChristianshave tosay.Itsramificationsanditsrelevanceextendintoeverycorner.But infactalldiscussiontendstobenarrowedtoquestionsarisingoutofthe secondgreatCommandment;andthese discussionsthemselvesarenecessarily vitiatedifourneighbour'sgoodis wronglyconceived.
Alittletimeago,whentheArchbishopofCanterburyansweredvarious objectionsandcriticsonthewireless, itwassignificantoftheevilofourage thattherewaslittleinterestindoctrine,butgreatinterestinthesizeof bishops'incomes.Asitisthemost familiarofhecklers'points,atoutdoor meetings,thattheArchbishophimself receives£15,000ayear,itwouldbe commonsensetomakesuchchangesin themethodsofaccountingaswillmake itclearthatbishops'incomesarenot personalbutofficial,fortheupkeepof buildingsandforotherofficialoutlay incidentaltoapublicposition.Ifwe putforwardconsiderationsonsucha matter,itisnottooffercounseltothe leadersoftheChurchofEnglandon theirinternalmanagement,butbecausebothasCatholicsandasEnglishmenweareveryimmediatelyconcerned-themoresosincetheachievementofagreementforjointactionbetweenChristiansincivicmatters-with thewaythebattleforaChristian,as opposedtoasecular,viewoflifeis waged.Thisisabattleinwhichall Christiansareallies,againstallthose whowouldplacesomethingelseinthe centreofthepictureastheguiding ruleforhumanlife.
Fromthatpointofviewwefeel impelledtosay,afterreadingtheaccountsofmanyrecentspeeches,that itseemstoustobeamistaketorest soverymuchonthedefensiveasto allownon-Christians,oftenanti-Christians,todecidewhatthegeneralbasis ofdiscussionshallhetoletthemput moneyintheforefront,andkeepit there;andforprelatestoseektoclear theChurchofEnglandofcharges eitherofhavingtoomuchwealthorof havingittooirrationallydistributed, orofhavingbeenindifferenttosecur-
ingmorewealthforthepoor.People whothinkthatthatistheonly,orthe most,interestingthingtodiscussabout thenationalChurch,oughtthemselves tobecriticisedfortheextremenano's.nessoftheirminds,forbeingsuckin amaterialismwhichisadegradedas wellasafalsecreed.NoothergenerationofEnglishmen,sinceSt.AugustinefixedhisSeeatCanterbury, wheninvitedtoquestiontheArchbishop,wouldhavedirectedmostoftheir questionstosoinsignificantamatter ashisortheChurch'sincome.
Frommanyasocial-policysermon nowadaysthehearerwouldconclude thatnoonecanbeexpectedtothink aboutreligioustruthuntilhehasa muchmorettreandadequatein.

comethanhas,inLoberfact,ever beenthelotofthevastmajorityof Christianssincethefoundationofthe Church.Thisisnotapointofview whichoughttobeconcededassensible:andwhenmensay"Wewill listentoyourdoctrinesafteryouhave helpedustorealiseoursocialprogrammes,"theyshouldbeanswered notaccordingtotheirownpremises, butaccordingtoChristianpremises, andtoldthattheutterlywrongandupsidedownscaleofvalueswhichsuch anattituderevealsisitselfthegreat disorientationthatChristiansaremost concernedtoexpose.
Thisisamatterinwhichitisvery easytomisrepresenttheChristian standpoint.Itisaquestionofproportion,and,aswithallquestionsof proportion,thelanguagemustbevery precise.Itisaparodytopretend,as secularistantagonistsdo,thatourreligionisindifferenttomaterialconditions,andisofferedasawayofdistractingmen'sattentionfromtheir rights.BycomparisonwithAsiatic religions,ourcreedmindstemporal matters'verymuch.Butitisequally aparodytoimply,assomanyChristianspeakersdoimply,thatthemain purposeandpointofChristianbelief andpracticeisthatitproducesa happyandcomfortablesociety,sothat thecreedcanreallystandonitssocial merits,withouttherebeinganyneed 'tothinkverymuchaboutthelifeafter death.Thesecularistsareconceded toomuchwhentheyareallowedto decidewhatisrelevant,andtosay, "Weshalljudgeyoubyyoursocial policies,butweshallnotbelieveyour doctrines,evenifwefindwehaveto dropout.socialcriticisms."
Thereisanaltogetherabsurddisproportionbetweentheamountofcritic-

ismlevelledatnineteenthoreighteenth centuryprelatesoftheEstablishment, forindifferencetothematerialwellbeingoftheworkingclasses,andthe absenceofChristiancriticismofnineteenthandeighteencenturyintellectualswhodidafargreaterinjuryto theworkingclassesbyrobbingthemof theirreligiousbelief,andleadingthem intothementalbondageandconfusionswhichawaittheadolescentartisanquestingamongthebookstalls to-day.
Thegreatbusinessoftheologiansin modernEnglandhastohewithapologetics.Weshallonlylandourselves inanincreasingdisorderifwetryto bringbackwithouttheirsupporting beliefshabitsandinstitutionswhich originallycameintoexistenceasthe fruitofcertainreligiousbeliefs,and arelosingtheirvitalityasthebelief whichnourishesthemhasfailed.This isparticularlytrueonthecrucialmatterofthepopulation.Itisimmediatelystrikinginthematterofeducation.Ateveryturnmendesirecertainadvantageswhichtheyseetobe theconsequenceofaChristianformation.Onthecontinentithaslong beencommonenoughtofindfreethinkerswhosendtheirchildrentoa conventforthemoraltrainingwhich thenunscanprovide,becausethenuns arenotfree-thinkers.Thisispossible enoughforindividualfree-thinkers: butitisnotpossibleforawholesocietytogiveitselfaChristianeducationifitisnotimpregnatedwithChristianbelief.Suchbeliefcannotbe commanded,butininnumerablecases, asamongthequietlyinfluentialmen whoareto-day'sseniorcivilservants andpublicists,thereisagreatintellectualobstacletobelief,whichwould notwithstanddissectionandexplanationfromthosequalified,asisDr. Temple,forexample,tomakesuchan analysis.
WhatthepositivistslikeJohnMorleysetouttodointhe'sixtiesofthe lastcenturywas,theysaidtothe Christians,"nottoattackyou,butto explainyou."TheycouldnotexplainChristianitybecausetheydid notunderstandit.Truthcanunderstanderror,buterrorcannotunderstandtruth.Theintellectualhistoryofthelasttwohundredyears,theway scienceaftersciencesetuponitsown withexaggeratedpretensions,thedevelopmentofattacksonorthodoxy undertheguiseofapplyingscientific methodtothefactsofreligioushistory,comparativereligion,themodern psychology-itisthesumtotalofso manyarrogantlyself-sufficientactivitieswhichhasachievedthecumulativeimpressionwhichweighsdown modernmen,inwhoseheadsjostlethe conceptsandvisualimageswhichob-
structtheiracceptanceeitherofthe veryideaofrevealedtruthorofthe Christiandogmas.Apologeticsarenot concernedtodemonstratepositively, buttoclearobstaclesoutofthewaybyshowingclearlywhattheyareand ofwhatlittlesubstance.Amanmay stillbeanunbeliever,buthewillcease towraproundhimself,towarmhisunbelief,irrelevantreasonsandbaseless impressions.Itisdesirablethat Churchleadersshouldasserttheir right,aspublicmenofparticularcalling,trainingandoutlook,toexpress theirviewsonsocialpolicy.Well-informed,theymayhopetoexercisea goodinfluencebothonthematterand onthemannerofsuchpublicissues. Butallthiswouldbeboughtattoo highapriceifthesettinginwhich theycomeforwardisallowedtobean unchallengedsecularsettinginwhich menareallowedtotreattheprofound andvitaldogmaswhichalonegivesignificancutotheclergyasmeaningless red-herrings,whereasitisreallythe otherwayround.Itisthedogmas whichareconcernedwithmattersof thefirstimportance,andtheprojects oflegislationwhichare,bycomparison, irrelevanciesanddistractions;anda societywhichdoesnotinstinctively thinksoisasocietyinbadspiritual health.
CONDONATIONOFVICE
St.Joan'sSocialandPoliticalAlliance,London,protestsvigorouslyagainsttheinclusionofregulation3313 intheEmergencyPowersBillnowbeforeParliament,whichwouldcompel doctorstonotifyvenerealdiseaseso thatthepersoninformedagainstwould beobligedtosubmittomedicalexamination.Theclausehasnotoriously beenintroducedbecauseofrecentreportsofanalarmingincreaseinvenerealdiseaseduringthewar.Its adoptionwouldcertainlybeadeplorabledeparturefromprofessionalsecrecyandwouldexposeinnocentpersonstodisgustinginquisitions.But St.Joan'sallianceobjectstoitalso andchieflyonthegroundthatitwould createafalseillusionofimmunity fromdisease,andwouldbeexercised chieflyagainstundesirableclassesof womenwhowouldtherebyreceivevirtuallyacertificateoffreedomfrominfection.Anythingwhichencourages organisedprostitutioninsuchways shouldbestronglyrestricted.In practicetheregulationmightencourageratherthanrestrictimmorality. TheGovernmentwoulddomuchbetter toceaseencouragingpromiscuitybytheissueofprophylacticstotheforces ratherthanvainlyattempttolimit thediseasewhichsuchapolicyalways ;ncreases.

PPEALINGtotheBritishGovernmenttoimplementtheproposalsinhissocialsecurityplan,Sir WilliamBeveridgeisreportedfrom Londonassayingthat"hewasnut askedtodesignthewholesuitbutonly thetrousers.Idesignedthetrousers andwehadbetterputthemonimmediatelysothatwecan,withafree mind,alsoseeaboutthecoatand otherpartsofthereconstructionwardrobe."
Now,thatispreciselymyobjection tothisandsimilarkindsofservile cure-alls.SirWilliamBeveridgeundoubtedlymadethetrousers,butwithoutanyreferencetothefigureof humansocietytheywouldhavetofit. Butmoreextraordinarilystill,he madeapairoftrouserswithoutany thoughtofthecoatandotheraccessories.Hemadethemwithoutadvertancetothefullstatureofman. Hencenoonehastitletosurpriseif thetrousersalreadyappearshinyon thesurface,atrifleshortinthelegs, alittletightaboutthewaist,andwith atouchofbaginess.Tosomeofus thereiseventhehorridsuspicionthat theseatisoutofthetrousers,andthat sociallyweareindangerofbeingindecentlyexposedtotheentireworld.
Thebesttailorintheworldcannot makeapairoftrouserswithoutthe correctmeasurementsofthepersonhe proposestofitandwithoutreference tothecolour,cutandgeneralperson oftheremainingapparel.Butthatis exactlywhatSirWilliamdid.He madeapairoftrousersforBritishsocietyandsomehoworotherheisdeterminedtosqueezeitintothem.There maybeatearortwointheprocess, hutheisconvincedthatclothesmake theman.
Thislop-sidedsocialphilosophy dogsallourreformers.Firstly,they cannotseethatmanhashisheadin heavenandsocannotmakehimahat orahalo.Andthentheysetabout makinghimtrouserswithoutmeasuringhisheight.
tisalltoopainfullytruethatuntil oneknowseverythingonecannot knowanything.Theparthasmeaningonlybyreferencetothewhole. Anygivensectionofknowledgewill lackrelevanceandmeaningunlessitis relatedtothetotalityofbeing.Indeed,wheretheperspectiveisawry, thepartverysooncomestobelarger andmoreimportantthanthewhole, andhencelargerandmoreimportant thanthetruth.
AtthetimeSirWilliammadehis metaphoraboutthetrousers,heappealedtotheGovernmenttotakeits imaginationinbothhands.Andin sobertruthitwouldneedtodoso, foranyonewithhalfaneyecanperceivethatsocialservices,whilethey mayhelptowardssocialsecurity,will doirreparableharmtosocialfreedom. Itisearnestlytobehopedthatnoone willeveraskSirWilliamtomakea startonthecoat.Foritwouldhave tobealongclericalcoattocoverthe holesintheback-sideofhisprecious trousers.

a"remedy.'orevenasa"reform."I wouldaskourlegislatorswithtearsin myeyestogiveupthishole-in-thecornerbusinessandtoputanendto theproof-by-errormethodsofsocial legislation.Withalittlephilosophy andabackgroundofhistoryitispossibletoarriveatthesubstantialtruth aboutsocialproblems.
WhileIcontendthatMrSchroeder isagooddealmoreenlightenedonhis subjectthanmostofthepoliticians,I don'tthinkthereisanypointintryingtodeceiveourselvesthatthedelinquencyproblemdoesn'tamountto verymuch.Thenumberofcasesthat cometotheCourtmaybetrifling,but onecannotformajudgmentonthat basis.Infactitonlylendspointto mycontentionthattheChildWelfare Departmentishopelesslyunder-staffed andthatmanycasesarenotinvestigatedandbroughttotheCourtasthey shouldbe.Onehasonlytonoticethe almostuniversalphenomenonofvandalismagainstpublicpropertytorealisethattheproblemdrivesverydeeplyindeed.Icanquitesympathise withpeoplewhodon'twanttoexpose thefulnessoftheevil,butatleast theyshouldnotdenyitsexistence.
ThereceptionwhichtheMinisterfor ChildWelfaregavetotherecentdeputationwhichwaiteduponhimtourge theestablishmentofsomekindofindustrialschoolformorerefractorydelinquentsisquiteamazingHehas alreadyacceptedtheproposal,itwould seemfromthereports.Yetonallsides itisadmittedthatto anumerical

"Noreligionofanykind-Catholic, Jewish,ProtestantorMoslem-can existsidebysidewiththeJapanese militaristicconceptofBushido,the doctrineofHakkoIshoandShintoism, exceptinaverysubservientcapacity," isMr.Scott'sbelief.

Forexample,fromthedateofthe attackonPearlHarbourandupto thetakingofManila,theJapanese press,Mr.Scottobserved,"madea greatto-doaboutfriendshipforthe CatholicChurch,andespeciallyinthe Philippines,"andclaimedtobe"actuallyseekingtoliberatetheChurch fromAmericandomination."
AfterthefallofManila,Mr.Scott notedthatoneofthefirstactsofthe JapanesewastheclosingofallCatholicschoolsinthePhilippines.The "JapanAdvertiser,"ofTokyo,onJune 4,announcedthatCatholicschools wouldreopen"veryshortly,afterreligiousteaching,arecutofffromthe
curriculum."Thereoper,r4ofthe schools,Mr.Scott,added,meantthe useofJapanesetextbooksandlanguageandtheemploymentofJapanese teachers,and,"naturally,thesubsequentinclusionoftheteachingofthe divinityoftheEmperor.'
Itwasreasonabletoassume,he added,thattheclosingofchurches wouldnotbefaroff.'althoughthe policyfollowedsofarinJapanhas beentopermitthechurchestoremain open,buttohamperandridicule churchattendanceonthepartofJapaneseChristians...
VaticanWasFarsighted.
Mr.Scott'sobservation,basedon15 yearsinJapan,recallsthatseveral yearsagotheJapaneseauthoritiesbegantakingstepstowardthedepositionofforeignersfrompositionsof leadershipinthechurchesinthat country.Catholicbishopsofother nationalitiesresignedthattheHolySee 'nightappointJapaneseprieststosucceedthem.FortunatelytheVatican's policyoffosteringnativeclergyin everywaypossiblewaswelladvanced inJapan,andnativesalreadyoccupiedanumberofimportantSeesat thetime.
ThisfarsightedVaticanpolicywas alsocommendedbythe65Maryknoll priestswhoaccompaniedMr.Scott homeonthe"Gripsholm."Theywere enthusiasticalsoaboutthestaunchnessoftheCatholicnativepopulation, andtoldofhowwhenwordreached KyotothatCatholicmissionarieswere onatrainpassingthroughtoTokyo. thestationwasbesiegedwithChristianswhohadcomeforonelast glimpseoftheirpriests.Thecrowd wavedtothepriestsandcalledout, "Comehack!Comehackwhenthe warisover."

HepraisedFrancoforhisassertion thattheapplicationofChristianprincipleswasnecessaryinthereconstructionoftheworldandsaidthat ifyouthweretrainedintheobservanceoftheseprinciples,thefuture couldbelookedforwardtowithconfidence.

ThusweshallachieveharmonybetweentheinterestsoftheState,the familyandtheindividual,harmony thatcanonlybereachedbyobserving thelawofGod.
Weshallbelieveinthestabilityofa newOrderononeconditiononly,and thatisthatthetoolsoftheold ordershouldbedestroyed:materialisticconceptionoflife,contemptor neglectofGodinprivateorpublic life,classstruggleandselfishness. TomarktheopeningoftheCatholic Nurses'Guild,apleasantsocialfunctionwasheldintheC.G.M.Roomson Tuesday,March2,whichwasattended bynursesrepresentativeofPerth,Fremantle,KingEdwardandChildren's Hospitals.Asapreludetothesocial' itself,FatherLalorspokeontheCatholicGirls'Movement,andhowgladhe Witstowelcomethenurseswhowere, becomingmembersundertheNurses'
Guild.Itemsweregivenbyvarious membersoftheMovement,followedby ashorttalkfromSisterReidyonthe importanceoftheGuildfortheCatholicnurses. FatherMcGillicuddy,theSpiritual Director,thenstressedtheadvantages oftheGuild,andwhilethankingthe nursesfortheirco-operationinmaking theeveningasuccess,hopeditwasthe beginningofbetterthingstocome.A daintysupperwasservedduring whichmanyfriendshipswererenewed, therebybringingahappyeveningtoa close.
TheLegionPraesidiumorganising theGuildmeetseveryTuesdayevening at8p.m.,intheClubRooms(Room 9),andacordialinvitationisextendedtoallCatholicnursesandtrainees toattendthesemeetings.

Preparationsarewellunderwayfor ourSecondConcert,whichwillbeheld onFriday,March26,at8.15p.m.,in theAssemblyHall,Pier-street,between St.George'sTerraceandHay-street.

ManyoftheJapaneseareBuddhists, andChristiansarenumerous.But theoverwhelmingmajorityareShintoists.ReligiousShintoism,however,is dividedintomanydifferentsects,such as"Kurozumikyo''(theteachingof Kurozumi);"Tenrikyo"(theteaching oftheHeavenlyReason);"Konkokyo"(theteachingoftheGolden Light),and"Omotokoko"(theteachingoftheGreatFundamentals)."Tenrikyo"claimstobethelargestreligiousShintobodyto-day.Itwasfoundedin1838byawoman,MikiofYamato.Shesaidthatshewaspossessedbythespiritofagod,andthatshe wascommissionedtoteachthatallills andmaladieswereduetoillusion causedbygreed'andothervices.She introduced,therefore,theprincipalof

ThethinghatefultothegodswasviolationofShintoritual.Afterthe seventhcentury,whentheworshipof theMikadoorEmperorwasintroduced,andtheethicsofConfuciusbegan tohaveaninfluence,acodeofmorals called.the"Bushido"wascreated.The keynoteof"Bushido"isloyaltytothe Emperor,andindifferencetodeath.To engenderthesevirtuestheJapanese hadtoschoolthemselvesinthevirtues ofcourage,self-denial,andrigidselfcontrol.Themilitarycharacterof "Bushido"ledtoacontemptforthe dignityofwomen,andindifferenceto theprivatelivesofmen.Filialpiety, however,ordevotiontoparents,isinsistedupon.Infact,filialpietyand loyaltytotheEmperorarethereal moraldutiesthatfitone'scharacter forthecompanyofthegreatancestral spiritsofthenation.Itmustbeadmitted,ofcourse,thatmostoftheordinarynaturalvirtues,eventhough notformallyinculcatedbyShintoism, findtheirplace,asarule,inthelives oftheJapanesesimplyinvirtueofthe factthattheyarehumanbeingsand notinhuman.

Thereareover21,000papersand periodicalspublishedregularlyinthis country.Manystatementsappear inthecolumnsofthesepageswhich ridiculeandmisrepresenttheChurch; andthereisnoonewhowillriseup tocorrectthem.AndyetaMr. Hooperwrites78,000letterstoeditors onmattersmostlyofpassinginterest.
Oughtwetowriteletterstoeditors whoallowuseoftheircolumnsto malignthoseChristianprinciples whichweholdmostdear?Why,of courseweshould.Weadmirethe earlyChristianswhosufferedpersecutioninthecatacombs,andthe marchingCrusaderstrampingdown theroadsofEuropetorescuethe HolyLandfromtheTurk,with"God WillsIt"ontheirtongue.

"Theenemyisfiercebecauseitdoes notknowyou;ignoranceisits strength,errorititslife. Oblige mentoknowyou.Makeitsoclear whatyouare,thattheycannotaffectnottoseeyou,norrefuseto justifyyou. Areligionwhich comesfromGodapprovesitselftothe consciencesofthepeoplewhereverit isreallyknown."
SotheGeorgiaCatholicLaymen's Associationdecided,likeSt.Patrick inIreland,todrivethemonsterof bigotryoutoftheswampsoftheir State.Theysetupanoffice,andbeganbombardingtheeditorofany paperwhodaredinsulttheirreligion. Somemonths,hundredsofletters wentoutdefendingandexplaining theattitudeoftheChurch.
SoontheCatholicsoftheState learnedwhattheLaymen'sgroupwas doing,and,insteadofsendingindividualproteststooffendingeditors,they senttheirreportstotheLaymen's officewhere,theyknew,theanswers wouldbeauthorisedandcompetent. Finally,unfaireditorsbegantorealise thatherewasa"watch-dog"thatwas notgoingtoletgountiltheysaid "Enough."TheAssociationwrote, insomeinstances,nearlyahundred letterstoeditorsbeforethesesame gentlemenwereconvincedofthefutilityoftheirranting.
AndtheC.L.A.didnotfailtowrite aletterofappreciationtoanyeditor whosaidsomethingcomplimentary aboutCatholics.
Aftertwenty-fiveyearsofletterwriting,HughKinchley,Executive SecretaryoftheCatholicLaymen's AssociationofAtlanta,Georgia,says: "ThepressofGeorgiaisasfairtoCatholicsasthepressofanyother State."
Theletterswerealwayscourteous andfriendlyintone,sowordedthat theeditorwouldnotfeelhewasaccusedofmaliceoradeliberateattempttomisrepresent,buthadbeen misledbyfalseinformation.
So,ifyouhaveanestofbigotsin yourterritory,takeexamplefromthe GeorgiaLaymen'sAssociation.Do notbecontentwithcorrectingonly non-Catholiceditors.Veryoftenwe seeCatholiceditorsgetawayoffthe trackontheirreligion.They,too, shouldbecharitablycorrected.
Editorsknowthatletterstotheeditorareinteresting,orcanbe.The editoroftheDesMoines"SundayRegister,"whichcarriesapageofreaderletterseverySunday,tellsme:

Whendidthetransitionbegin?Itis hardtosay,butperhapsaremarkhe made,whenlyingwoundedonthe GlenrowanStationafterhislast"skirmish,"furnishesaclue.Therewas aCatholicpriestontheNorth-Eastern trainthatmorning-theRev.M.Gibney,\'.G.,ofPerth(laterBishop).He believedhisdestinationtobeAlbury -buthisjourneyendedatGlenrowan. Onarrivalthere,heheardoftheactivitiesofthe"KellyGang,"and,in hisownwords:"IgotoutatGlenrowan,becauseIthoughtImightbe ofuseinmyclericalcapacity.Iwent atonceintotheroomwhereNed Kellywaslyingatthestation. WhenIaskedhimtosay:'LordJesus, havemercyonme,'hesaiditandadded:'Ifsnotto-dayIbegantosay that.'"FatherGibneyheardhisconfession,afterwardsremarking:"Heis penitent,andshowsaverygooddisposition."Afewmonthslater,in Melbourne,theredawnedanother morning-EdwardKelly'slastmorning onearth.Onawakeningat5a.m. afterafewhours'sleep,hewenton hiskneesandprayerfor20minutes. ThedeceasedwasbornatEnnistymon,Co.Clare,Eire,in1865,thedaughterofTimothyandEllenMarrinan,of KnockacanonHouse,theyoungestof eightchildren.Shebecameateacher undertheNationalSchoolSystem,but whileyetinherteensshewasadventurousenoughtoleavehomewitha cousin,andarrivedinSydneysome sixtyyearsago.Shedidnotremain longinSydney,whichsheleftforVictoria,whereshewassoonmarriedin theCarmeliteChurch,Melbourne.In 1895theechoesofWestraliandiggings piercedthequiethomeinMelbourne, andonceagaintheramblingspiritof co.Clareasserteditselfandtothe Westsheandherhusbandcame,where theyfollowedthefortunesofgold untilatlasttheyestablishedtheir homewithintheSacredHeartparish atHighgateHill.Toherwereborn fivesonsandfourdaughters.The twoeldestboyswerekilledinaction duringthelastwar,onedaughter,the

In1867,Bishop-laterCardinalLavigerieentereduponthescene.Itwas notlongbeforehe"wentinperson" toseetheEmperor,NapoleonIII,to obtainpermissiontoestablishfouror fivedispensarieswheretheSisters couldcareforsickArabsand"alldirectreligiouspropagandawouldbeabsolutelyforbidden,butCatholiccharitywoulddefraythecost."TheEmperorwasfavourable,butMarshalMacMahon,theGovernorofthecolony, opposedeventhis.BeforetheBishop couldreturnaterribleepidemicof choleratookmorethan70,000victims amongthenatives,andthiswasfollowedwithintwoyearsbydrought andfamine.TheAdministrationcould notcopewiththesituationandBishop Lavigerie,witheverymeansathisdisposal,appealedtoCatholiccharity.

"SuchStateassistancewouldnaturallyinvolvesomechangeinthestructureoftheseschools,butitneednot affecttheiressentialcharacter.After all,iftheseschoolswerenotmaintainedbygreatChurchcommunitiesthe publicasawholewouldhavetoprovidefarmoremoneyforStateschools andStateinstruction.

"Inthepastthisproblemhas,unhappily,beensomewhatcloudedbya beliefthatsomespecialcasewasbeing madeoutfortheCatholicChurch schools.Itisunfortunateforanydiscussiononamattersoimportanttogo otiintoamerelysectariandispute. Myownbeliefisthatthemaintenance oftheChurchschools,ofwhateverdenomination,issoimportant-because areligiousbackgroundforeducationis soimportant-thatwemustallbepreparedtocometogetherinthepostwarworldtodevisewaysandmeans ofensuringthatthosewhoarecontent withapurelyseculareducationshould beabletogetit,whilethosewhom suchaneducationwillneversatisfy shouldbeabletogetthekindoftrainingtheywantfortheirchildrenwithoutabsolutelybankruptingthemselves intheprocess."

Mr.Menziessaidthatamongthe morepleasantillusionswhichsomeof usentertainisthebeliefthatinmattersofpubliceducationAustralia,even ifshedoesnotleadtheworld,is,at east,inthevanguardofprogress.This beliefcannotbesupported.
"Itistruethatmanyyearsagoour grandfatherstooktheboldstepofintroducingfree,secularandcompulsory elementaryeducationandasystemof Stateschools.Thisstep,whichwas seentoassuretoeveryboyandgirl theelementsofeducation,wasproperlyregardedasanenlightenedsubstituteforthesomewhatsporadicunregulatedmethodstherebeforeexisting.

nationalendsshouldnotbeallowedto obscurethefactthatthegreaterthe facilitiesforpost-schooleducation,and, themorecontinuoustheinterestofthe citizeninthecultivationoftheresourcesofhisownmind,themore successfulandintelligentwillself-governmentbecome.
