TheimmoralatmospherepervadingthePressandthetheatreaswellas factoriesandoffices,andthepartwhichCatholicsshouldtakeinthe spiritualrenaissanceofmankindwerediscussedbytheHolyFather whenhereceivedinaudienceandgavealongaddresstorepresentatives ofItalianCatholicActionrecently.

TheHolyFatherspokeoftheharmfuleffectonyoungworkersof loosetalkingandlooselivinginfactoriesandofficeswhichcouldbecomehatefultothosewhoworkthere,andHisHolinessurgedworkers togettogethertopersuadethoseinauthoritytousetheforceoflaw againstimmoralityinthePressandthetheatre.

Inthepresentpainfulupheavalofmankind,thePopesaid,thereisat stakenothinglessthantheproblemofrestoringandre-organisingall thingsinChrist.Thisworkisthere-establishmentoftheKingdomof God,foundedbyChrist.

"To-daythewholeworldfeelsthe needofare-birthoforder.Look atthestatesmen.Whatistheirambition?Isitnottosecurethecoma mongoodinanatmosphereoftemporalorder,inharmonywiththeeternalandsupernaturalorder?

LookattheChurch.Shehasa stillhighermission-torestore,promote,propagatewithinsocietythe KingdomofGod,withoutwhichthere isnotandcannotbeevenfromapurelynaturalpointofviewthatpermanent,tranquilorderwhichisthedefinitionofpeace."

Dealingwiththeefficacyofpersonal holiness,thePopesaidthereare200,000 meninItalianCatholicAction.The mereaccumulationofprayerandacts ofvirtuewasanelementofsignificance fortherestorationofChristianityin Italyandintheworld.

TheHolyFathermadeareference to"unscrupulouseditors"inspeaking ofimmoraltendenciesinthePressand thetheatre"eveninthesedaysofexceptionalgravity."

Hespokeoftheimagesofvicewhich remainindeliblyfixedontheminds ofchildrenwhentheyarepermitted toseeharmfulpictures.

Buthumannatureisnotuniversally depraved,HisHolinesssaid.Human natureisessentiallygood.Thesmall minorityexcepted,peopleingeneral donotwanttheproductionsthatare almostforcedonthem-andthePope urgedpeopletogettogethertopersuadethecivilauthoritytousethe forceofthelawagainstsuchpersons andagainstsuchpractices.

TheruthlessandbarbarianmannerinwhichtheGermanNazisarefighting thiswarhasneverreceivedbetterexpressionthanwhenthelittletownof LidicewasrazedtothegroundaftertheassassinationofHeydrich.Mt. Willkie'saddresshasnotpreviouslybeenpublishedinAustralia,butisme ofthemostmovingdocumentsthewarhasprovided.

Letmetellyouastory.Tenmiles westofPrague,inCzechoslovakia, therewasalittlevillagecalledLidice, spelledL-1-D-1-C-E Itwasamining village,amileoffthemainhighway, withsomelovelyoldinns,ablacksmith ortwo,ashoemaker,awheelwright,a tailor.Thevillagehadbeenthere forover600years.

Theintroductionofnewtechnical subjectstothenormalcurriculumand theinaugurationofthehobbysystem asabasisofpracticaItrainingno doubtinvolvesomeproblemsbothin theorganisationofthetimeofthe schoolandinthetrainingofteachers. Assomanysubjectsarealready taughtinCatholicSchools,thereis nodoubtthattheintroductionofnew subjectsraisesproblemsoftimewhich mightseemdifficulttofaceatthebeginning.Thereisalsothedifficulty ofprovidingequipment,andtheremay evenbetheinitialobjectionofsome parents.Whenthealternative,however,isthecompletelackofany ruraltrainingitisclearthat,whateverthedifficulties,theeffortmustbe made.Theintroductionofthehobby systemintoschoolscanbesaidto justifyitselffrommanypointsofview otherthanthetrainingoftheboy, whichisitsfirstobjective.Ifthese arerun',:fficientlytheycat,playa greatpartinkeepingtheschoolitself inproperworkingorder,andinincreasingitsownproductiveresources. Furthermore,theseareonlytheimmediateobjectivestobesoughtinthe transformationofeducation.With thepassageofyearstheslantwhich isgiventothewholeoftheeducationalsystemwill,nodoubt,betransformed.Thestudyoftheclassics, thestudyofEnglishliterature,the studyofhistoryandgeographycan allbegivenanewangle,exaltingthe valuesofrurallife.Thereisno doubtthatalmosteverysubjectwhich formspartofthenormalschoolcurriculumto-day-eventhepurelymathematicalsubject-canplayitspartin revivingthepsychologicalattractions ofrurallife.Everythingdependson thepurposewhichliesbehindthe trainingwhichisgiven,andthepurposewhichismadeobvioustothe boys.Andwheneventhepurelyreligiousinstructioninourschoolsis givenagainstthebackgroundofthat ruralcivilisationwhichhasbeenCatholicism'sgreatcontributiontothe socialhistoryoftheChristianworld, thentheruralrevivalineducation willhavereachedfruition.

Allthisobviouslyisinthefuture. Theimportantpointisthattheprincipleofthenecessityofchangeshould beaccepted,thatthefirststepsalong the'roadtochangeshouldbetaken

Thegreatestdangeristhatpersons onwhomtheresponsibilityrestsin thismatterwillnotshoulderitthemselves.Thechangeissogreatthat parentsmightbeinclinedtowaitfor teachersandteachersforparents.A policyofhesitation,however,would befraughtwithdisaster,anditisthe firmhopeoftheMovementthatthe leadwhichitisgivinginthispolicy ofruraleducationwillberesponded tobothbytheparentswhomitincludesinitsruralgroups,andthe teacherswhohaveshownsuchgreat sympathyfortheobjectivesofthe Movementalready.

Thetransformationineducationis nottobeconfinedtotheSecondary Schools.Itisimportantthatthose boysandgirlswhodonotadvance beyondtheprimarystageineducationshouldhavethebenefitofthe newapproachtotheireducation.It isamistaketothinkthatthedamage isdoneonlyinsecondaryschools,for itisthewholephilosophicalbasisof theeducationalsystemwhichisfalse, anditseffectsareasvisibleatthe primarystageastheyareattheSecondary.

Inthenormalprimarycurriculum inAustraliathereisnothingwhichis aimedspecificallyatapreparationfor rurallife,anditisonlynowthatthe State,realisingthedeficiencyinthis system,isendeavouringtorestorethe properideasbytheestablishmentof YoungFarmers'Clubs.

Thesearenuttheidealsolutionto theproblem,forlogicallytheonly propersolutionwouldbeaneducationalsystembywhichruralsubjects wouldoperatewithinthecurriculum asanintegralpartoftheprogramme, ratherthanasanadditiontothe normalprogramme.Whateverbe thestrengthofthelogicalargument, however,thereisnodoubtthatin theinstitutionofYoungFarmers' Clubswehaveapractical,although partial,remedyforthedeficiency,and itisincumbentuponustousethem aswidelyaspossible,bothfortheir ownvalueandasawedgeintheexistingcurriculum,leadingtothehope ofafuturecurriculuminwhichthe Catholicideaofruraleducationwill bemorefullyintegrated.

IV.-REVIVALOFHOMELIFE.

Thenation-wideenquirywhichwas conductedby'theruralMovementin thefirstyearofitsexistencetoascertainthetruepositionofrurallife revealed-whatmanyprecedingrural enquirieshadalreadyrevealed-that thehousingconditionsoffarmersin Australialeftmuchtobedesired. Throughacombinationofbadideas andbadeconomicconditions,therural homeisnotcharacterisedbyanydegreeofcomfort,stilllessbyanydegreeofattractiveness.Itisvery hardtogeneraliseinthismatter,of course,fortherearemanyexceptions totherule.Neverthelessitcanbe saidwithcertaintythatinmanyparts ofthecountrythereareruralhomes which,iftheyexistedinthecity, wouldbeknownas"slums."

Itisadmittedthatthisisnota problemwhichisconfinedtoAustralia.IntheUnitedStatestheproblemofruralhousinghasreceiveda tremendousamountofattentionfrom theDepartmentofAgricultureandthe DepartmentoftheInterior,and nothingismorecertainthanthattodaythebadhousingconditionsofthe majorityoftenantfarmersinthe UnitedStatesisoneofthemajor causesoftheinstabilityofagriculture inthatcountry.

Ithasalreadybeenmentionedthat thisfactorinAustraliaisduetoa

combinationofbadideasandbad economicconditions.Inmanycases thelatterweredecisive.Thefinancial returnsfromfarmingweresosmall thatitisimpossibletoestablisha homewiththemoderncomfortsand amenitiestowhichthefamilyisentitled.Indefaultofpositivefigures itisimpossibletosayhowfarbad housingconditionsareduetobadeconomicconditions.Butitiscertain that,throughoutthewholeofAustralia,therearehundreds,probablyeven thousandsoffarm-houseswherethe, economicconditionofthefamily wouldhavejustifiedtheinclusionof modernamenitiestolightenthetoil ofthelandandtomakethehorns attractivetowomenandchildren wheretheseamenitiesareabsent.It isnoisolatedphenomenontoseea farmhouselackingeveryconvenience, lackingevenaverynecessarycoatof paint,whilstoutsidethehousethere isanexpensivemotorcar.Thereis anintimateconnectionbetweenthese twothings.Themoneywhichis spentonthemotorcarisjustifiedby thenecessityofsecuringsomerelief fromthemonotonyanddrudgeryof thefarmbyperiodicvisitstothecity. Tomanyitdoesnotseemtohaveoccuredthatifthemoneywhichwasinvestedinthemotorcarhadbeeninvestedinbeautifyingthehomeand makingitfullyattractivetothefamily,theperiodicvisitstothecity wouldnothavebeenasnecessaryas

theyarenow,forthepleasureswhich areobtainableinthecitycouldhave beenobtainedinthehomeitself.The motorcarhasbecomeanecessary meansofescapefromhousingconditionswhichdonotsatisfytheordinary humanneedsofthefarmfamily.

TheobjectivesoftheN.C.P.M.in thisrespecthavebestbeensummed upinthe"ManifestoonRuralLife," publishedbytheAmericanBishops, whichemphasisesthattorhangeall thisdemands,primarily,achangeof outlook.ThetaskoftheMovement istoconvincethemenandwomenon thelandthatthemoneywhichis spentonamotorcarshouldnotbe spentuntilthehomeitselfiserdowed withtheordinaryconveniencesofthe cityhome-runningwater,hotwater, electricity,sanitaryconveniences,refrigeration.Themajorityofcountryhomescouldpossesstheseconveniencesforlessthan£200,andalthough thisisaconsiderablesuminthepresentcriticalfinancialsituation,itis farlessthanhasbeenspentonautomobilesinthepast,andpresumably lessthanwillbespentinthefuture.

Combinedwiththelandscapingof theruralhome,thekeepingofanattractivegarden,andthemultitudeof otherthingswhichcanbedoneto makethehomeamoresatisfying place,thisprogrammewillremovea greatpsychologicalbartothepermanenceoftheruralhome.

Theintroductionofnewtechnical subjectstothenormalcurriculumand theinaugurationofthehobbysystem asabasisofpfracticaltrainingno doubtinvolvesomeproblemsbothin theorganisationofthetimeofthe schoolandinthetrainingofteachers. Assomanysubjectsarealready taughtinCatholicSchools,thereis nodoubtthattheintroductionofnew subjectsraisesproblemsoftimewhich mightseemdifficulttofaceatthebeginning.Thereisalsothedifficulty ofprovidingequipment,andtheremay evenbetheinitialobjectionofsome parents.Whenthealternative,how. ever,isthecompletelackofany ruraltrainingitisclearthat,whateverthedifficulties,theeffortmustbe made.Theintroductionofthehobby systemintoschoolscanbesaidto justifyitselffrommanypointsofview otherthanthetrainingoftheboy, whichisitsfirstobjective.ifthese areruncificientlytheycat,playa greatpartinkeepingtheschoolitself inproperworkingorder,andinincreasingitsownproductiveresources. Atthebest,however,itmightbesaid thatthisinstructionisonlypartial andthatitwouldnotfulfiltheobjectiveofacompleteruraltrainingfor thecountryboyinaSecondarySchool. Thereisgroundforthisobjection,but wl.enitisrememberedthatacompleteruraltrainingcannotbegivenin a-vthingshortofanAgriculturalColleg,andthatthemajorityofboys enthenextfewyearsarenotlikely togotoAgriculturalColleges,itwill berealisedthatanysolutioncanonly byapartialone.Theimportant thingisthatthereisapsychological transformation.Insteadoftheboy beinggivenaneducationwhichdirects hismindpurelyandsimplytothelife ofthecity,theveryfactthatpartof histrainingconcernsthelifefrom whichhehascomeandthattheteacherthinksitimportantthatheshould havethistraining,exaltsthelifeon thelandinhisconsciousorsub-consciousmind,itdoesmuchtobreakthat dishearteningsenseofinevitability whichisoneofthechiefreasonswhy thepresenteducationwhichisgiven tocountryboysandgirlstendsto drivethemtothecity.

Furthermore,theseareonlytheimmediateobjectivestobesoughtinthe transformationofeducation.With thepassageofyearstheslantwhich isgiventothewholeoftheeducationalsystemwill,nodoubt,betransformed.Thestudyoftheclassics, thestudyofEnglishliterature,the studyofhistoryandgeographycan allbegivenanewangle,exaltingthe valuesofrurallife.Thereisno doubtthatalmosteverysubjectwhich formspartofthenormalschoolcurriculumto-day-eventhepurelymathematicalsubject-canplayitspartin revivingthepsychologicalattractions ofrurallife.Everythingdependson thepurposewhichliesbehindthe trainingwhichisgiven,andthepurposewhichismadeobvioustothe boys.Andwheneventhepurelyreligiousinstructioninourschoolsis givenagainstthebackgroundofthat ruralcivilisationwhichhasbeenCatholicism'sgreatcontributiontothe socialhistoryoftheChristianworld, thentheruralrevivalineducation willhavereachedfruition.

Allthisobviouslyisinthefuture. Theimportantpointisthattheprincipleofthenecessityofchangeshould heaccepted,thatthefirststepsalong the'roadtochangeshouldbetaken

immediately,andthatthegradualevolutionofanewruraleducationshould bemadethefirstobjectiveinthe trainingofcountryboys.

Thegreatestdangeristhatpersons onwhomtheresponsibilityrestsin thismatterwillnotshoulderitthemselves.Thechangeissogreatthat parentsmightbeinclinedtowaitfor teachersandteachersforparents.A policyofhesitation,however,would befraughtwithdisaster,anditisthe firmhopeoftheMovementthatthe leadwhichitisgivinginthispolicy ofruraleducationwillberesponded tobothbytheparentswhomitincludesinitsruralgroups,andthe teacherswhohaveshownsuchgreat sympathyfortheobjectivesofthe Movementalready.

Thetransformationineducationis nottobeconfinedtotheSecondary Schools.Itisimportantthatthose boysandgirlswhodonotadvance beyondtheprimarystageineducationshouldhavethebenefitofthe newapproachtotheireducation.It isamistaketothinkthatthedamage isdoneonlyinsecondaryschools,for itisthewholephilosophicalbasisof theeducationalsystemwhichisfalse, anditseffectsareasvisibleatthe primarystageastheyareattheSecondary.

AstheHolyFatherobserved,humannatureisnutwhollydepraved.Thereisstillasenseofdecencyinthegeneralityofour peoplethatrevoltsagainsttheseviciousmoderntendencies.The individual,however,seemstolabourunderasenseoffrustration inthefaceofadepravitythathasbecomesowidespread.Theindividualcandoreallylittleifthereisnosupportfromresponsible authority.ThepleaofthePopethatstatutorylawsgoverning themoralityofthePressandthetheatre.ofpublicandprivateconduct,shouldberigorouslyenforcedinthesedaysof"exceptional gravity"mustbecometheinsistentdemandofeveryparent,of everycitizen.Actiontheremustbe,butitwillnotcomeforthe merewishing.Itisascandalthatpublicmoralityshouldhave reachedsolowastandardthatouryoungmenandwomenseemio havelostallsenseofresponsibility,ofcommondecency,ofwhat thenationdemandsofthemastheparentsofafuturegeneration, ofwhattheBlessedTrinityexpectsofthemasmenandwomen withadestinythatdoesnotfinishwiththeviolentdeaththatfaces somanyofthemto-day.Gliblyourpublicfiguresspeakofthe Christianityforwhichwefight,gliblyandcynicallyweareinstructedintheshapeofthingstocome,theNewOrder-aNew Orderthatistobewithoutfoundation Fornocommunitycan hopeforprogressofanykindwhosemembersarenotboundtogetherbyamutualsenseofresponsibility.Withoutthatwe facedisintegration.Infact,wearefastachievingit.Andthis verynecessarysenseofresponsibilitycanonlyspringfroma deepconvictioninthetenetsoftheChristianfaith,moreexplicitly, ifyouwill,inthesynthesisoftruththatisCatholicism.

Butifitistoomuchtohopethattheauthorities-that-bemight bebroughttoacceptthesupernaturalprinciplesofCatholicism,or evenofthe"Christianity"theytalkabout-whateveritmeansneverthelessisitnotpossiblethattheymightbestirredtoaction merelythroughmotivesofexpediency?Don'ttheyseethatunlesspresenthabitsofimmoralityarecheckedthebreakdownof civildisciplineisimminent,thecompletefrustrationofthenation's futureinthecomingfatefultwentyyearswillalreadybeachieved, andthatsuchscandalousdisregardforpublicmoralityprovedeven inRussiatohavereapeditsowndisastrousreward.MayWenot profitbyRussia'smistakes,ormustwelearnthepainfullessonfor ourselves?NotthattheexampleoftheSovietshouldhethedecidingfactorastothenecessityoftakingaction,norevenrel.sons ofcivicornationalexpediency,norevenasenseofcommondecencyinthosewhohavetheauthoritytousebutfailtoIlseit.Surelytheoldergenerationatleastretaintheirfaithinthefundamentals ofChristianity,intherealityofthosehistoricalfactsandthe necessityofthoseChrist-givenprinciplesthathavebeenthefoundationofourWesterncivilisationitselfforathousandyears.Is ittoomuchtoaskthattheoldergenerationmove,beforeitistoo late,tosaveourchildrenfromthemselves?Mustthepleaofthe HolyFatherfallonceagainondeafears,andnothingbedone?It isthefateofyourownkithandkinthatisatstake,andthepreservationofallthatisgoodinthecauseforwhichsomanyto-day aresufferingmuchandofferingall inthecauseforwhichHE sufferedandgaveHISall!WhatseemstoheneededisaLegion ofDecency.

Wegobackinspirit,hesaid,on eachsuccessiveChristmasEvetothe littlecityofDavidontheridgeabove theplainofBethlehem,andwefollow inspiritinthewakeoftheshepherds astheygoinpilgrimagetothecave whereOurLordwasborn.Fallingon ourkneesonthestrawwelookinto thebabyeyesofGod.Itisthatfact whichgivesthemeaningtoourChristmas,becauseChristmasfortheCatholicistheBirthdayofGod'sSon-mademanfortheworld'sredemption.The sceneinBethlehem'scaveisapositive lessonofhumility-asermononselfabasement,alivingpictureofhumility-thatvirtuewhichisthefoundationofalltrueChristiangreatnessand indispensableinthefollowingofChrist. Itis,moreover,anindictmentofthe

spiritoftheworld,orintellectualpride, ofdestructivepersonalvanityandselfadoration.

Yet,infollowingOurLord,wemay notremainatBethlehem,butmustfollowHimeventoCalvary-foroursalvationisinacloseapproachtothe SpiritofOurSaviourinallthethoughts andactionsofourdailylives.

BytheIncarnationandBirthat Bethlehem,GodshowedthatHehad indeedbecomepartofthehumanfamily-Hispresenceamongstusisindispensabletoourpresenthappinessand ourfuturebliss.Itisimpossibleto haveajustandstablesocialorder withoutGod,andthereforeinourloyaltytotheDivineBabeofBethlehem weresolutelyrepudiateandwillalways activelyresistanyorderwhichwillnot haveasitsfoundationtheIncarnate SonofGodandHisholylaw.

InthenameofHisGracetheArchbishopandclergy,thepreacherthen extendedsincerestChristmasgreeting, tothecrowdedcongregation.

Diagnosis.

Hespeaks,itwillbeseen,inthe termsofdiseaseandhealth,and,since thesesuitourpurpose,weshalladopt them.Obviously,therefore,wehave todiagnosethetroublewhichputan endtohissatisfactionwithhimself. Andinthiswehavethepatient'shelp.

"Whatbroughtmatterstoahead," hetellsus,"wasthefactofevil.Like mostofmyintellectualgeneration,progressive,optimistic,leftwing,Ihad beentrainedtoregardevilasabyproductofcircumstances;ofeconomic circumstancesandofpsychological.The economiccircumstancewaspoverty; thepsychological,badtraininginearly childhoodresultingincomplexes,feelingsofenvy,guilt,inferiority,andall therestofthepsycho-analyst'sstockin-trade.Theinferencewasobvious, removethecircumstance,e.g.,bySocialismand/orbythepsycho-analysing ofteachersandparents,andyouwould abolishtheirby-product,evil."

Inthefaceofallthehorrorandwickednesswhichthewarhasreleased, thisconceptionofevilandoftheremediesforendingitbecame,ofcourse, manifestlyinadequate.Onexaminationthepatientfoundthatthediseasefromwhichheandhisworldwere sufferingwasfarmoreseriousthan eitherheorithadimagined.Hewas likeamanwhoimaginesthathehas anattackofindigestionanddiscovers thathispainisduetocancerofthe stomach.Thesituationwasnotmerelyannoying;itwastragic.Andthe tragedy,hecametotheconclusion,was attheveryrootsofhumannature.But letustakehisownstatement:"In otherwords,letevilbesufficientlyobtrusiveandsufficientlywidespreadand letmen'snosesberubbedinitwith sufficientviolence,andtheywillfind itincreasinglydifficulttoresistthebeliefthatitisinthenatureofthe beast;thatmen,inshort,arelikethat. Whatfollowsisconsideringthe sourcefromwhichitcomes,evenmore surprising.Pessimismconcerninghumannatureisafamiliarthing.But thepessimismwhich,usingtheword sin,incriminatesourselvesis,sofaras themodernistpublicisconcerned,new. Many,likeThomasHardy,havefound theapple"rottenatthecore."This, however,hasbutgiventhemoccasion tomalignthePowerresponsiblefor man'screation.Oneofthestockquestionsprovokedbythewaris:When suchcrueltiesareallowedtohappen, canonebelieveinagoodGod?But thereactionofProfessorJoad,whom noonecouldaccuseofinsensitiveness tosuffering,isthereverseofthis.It ispreciselytheexistenceofevil,hetells us,whichhasmadecredibleforhim theexistenceofagoodGod.Hisreasoningonthispointisprofoundlysignificant.

"Tobelievethatevilisabrutefact intheuniverse,thatitisendemicin man,thatitis,therefore,anineradicablepartofone'sself,andyettohave nodefenceagainst,nomeansofovercomingit,savesuchasareafforded bythespasmodiceffortsofone'sown will,andthewaveringuncertaintyof one'sownjudgment-thisisanalmostintolerableposition.Ifthereindeedbeevil,itmust,onefeels,bepossibletoenlisthelpinitsovercoming. AnAmazingDiagnosis

Arevivalofinterestinreligionis commonfeatureofepochssuchasours. Butwhowouldhaveexpectedthatthe rediscoveryofGodwouldcomeviathe doctrineofOriginalSin?Yetwhat moreconsonantwithareligionwhose foundationsarelaidinhumility?

AChristianPeace.

Therewasquotedsomeweeksago the"RecentRemark"ofawriterinthe ''ManchesterGuardian"whodeclared that"theleadersofalltheChurchesare busyplanningthepost-warworldand giveustheirviewsonpolitics,economics,financeandsociology.Theone scienceonwhichtheyaresilentis theirownscienceoftheology."ProfessorJoanmakesthesamecomplaint. ThefailureoforganisedChristianity heattributestothefactthatourreligion"hasbecomelittlemorethanthe highestcommonfactorofwhatmost decentmenbelieve,"andheasserts that"ifreligioniseveragaintomatter,itmustreversetheenginesand becomehard,dogmaticandexacting. Aboveall,sinceitsauthorityderives fromanotherworld,itmustnotbe ashamedoftheotherworldconnection. Onthecontrary,itmusttell'modern thought'togotothedevil,andstress theother-worldlyconnection."

Theworstoftryingtoaccommodate Christianitytotheprevailingmoodis thatnosoonerhaveitsspokesmendone thatthanthemoodchangesandloud demandsaremadefortheverything

wehavebeensoitpedallingConvincedthatourgenerationwouldnotlisten totheologicaldiscussionsandthatwhat itwantedwasevidenceofinterestin materialconditions,zealousrepresentativesof"theChurches"beganstudying economicsandmakingpronouncements oninternationalquestions,onlytobe toldwhentheyhadjettisonedtheir dogmasthattheyareoutofdateand thatthesedogmasandespeciallythe leastpopularofthem-thatconcerning OriginalSin-arejustwhatthepublic wants.Tosaytheleast,itishumiliatinganddisconcertingandsuggeststhat itmighthavebeenwisertohavebeen somewhatlessaccommodating.

Itisimportanttorememberthisdemandforatheologicalpresentation whenwespeakofaChristianPeace. EvenonthelipsofCatholicsthephrase sometimesmeansnomorethanapeace inaccordancewiththeethicalteaching ,'hristianityButthisethicalteachingisbasedonChristiandogma,andit isonlywhenthatconnectionisrealised thatitacquiressufficientdrivingpower tocreateapopularmovement.Itis theideologiesofthevariouspaganisms nowdisturbingtheworldwhichgive themtheirstrength.Notuntilwe getatheologicallyexpressedChristianityshallwebeenabledtoinvokethe inspirationofourreligioneffectively. Incidentally,itisbyshowingitsrelationtothevitalinterestsofthehour thattheQueenofScienceswillcome intoherown.-"CatholicHerald"

"TheEnemyWithin"

Theoppositionofthe Catholic ChurchtoConirnunismisnotsomethingnew.ItbeganwiththeappearanceofCommunisminourmidst: itwillcontinueuntilthehumanrace isfreefromtheCommunisticmenace.

Whythisshouldbeisevident.One hasbuttoreadtheofficialpublications oftheReds,orthehistoryoftheir brutalpersecutionofreligion,tosee thatCommunismis,andmustalways be,theswornenemyofallreligion. TheCatholicChurchwouldbefalse toChristifitallowedCommunismto gounchallenged.

InMarch,1923,whentheCatholic BishopCieplakwitheighteenpriests wassentencedtodeath,thepublic prosecutor,Krylenko,criedoutin court:"Ispitonyourreligion,asI doonallreligions."In1939,afew daysafterthesigningoftheRussoGermanpact,the"Pravda,"official organoftheCommunisticgovernment, featuredaspecialarticleinsisting thattheanti-religiousmovement"is nowamatterofState."Itquoted Lenin:"Wehavetobattleagainstreligion;thisistheA.B.C.ofallmaterialism,andconsequentlyofMarxism."ItquotedStalin:"Weareconductingapropaganda(andshallcontinuetodoso)againstreligiousprejudices." Communiststheworldover,and thisincludesourAustralianCommunists,mustjoininthiswaragainstreligion.ReadtheRuleBookandofficialinstructionsissuedtothem:they leavenoroomfordoubt.Themethod ofwarfareistobedeterminedbythe opportunitiesofthetime,nowprops-

ganda,nowterror,nowclass-warfare, noesplunderandpersecution. Thereisnosurprise,then,thatthe CatholicBishopshaveopposedthe liftingofthebanontheAustralian CommunistParty.Nosincerefollow. erofChristcoulddootherwise.Te liftthebanwouldbetogiveafreego toasystemwhichtheHolyFathe hasdescribedas"atheistic,anti-Chris tianandinhuman."

ApartFromReligion.

Apartaltogetherfromthereligiou standpoint,anAustralianwhobe longstotheCommunist"Party"isn. longeratrueAustralian.Heisth enemyofhiscountry.

TheCommunistPartyisNOT party.Itisatyranny.Politica partiesarebodiesofpersonsacceptinl thelawsofacountrywho,holdingop posingviewsonhowthoselawsma beappliedforthecommonweal,striv, byopenmeasuresandfreediscussio togaincontrolofgovernment.I thedemocracies,suchpartieshaveal waysbeenlookeduponasahealth manifestationofavigorouspubli spirit,andamediumbywhich minorityofthepeoplemaygiveeffec toitsprinciples.TheCommunis Partyisintolerantofallotherparties Whereveritgainstheupperhand,all otherpartiesarewipedoutand becomesatyranny.

Therewasquotedsomeweeksago the"RecentRemark"ofawriterinthe "ManchesterGuardian"whodeclared that"theleadersofalltheChurchesare busyplanningthepost-warworldand giveustheirviewsonpolitics,economics,financeandsociology.Theone scienceonwhichtheyaresilentis theirownscienceoftheology."ProfessorJoanmakesthesamecomplaint. ThefailureoforganisedChristianity heattributestothefactthatourreligion"hasbecomelittlemorethanthe highestcommonfactorofwhatmost decentmenbelieve,"andheasserts that"ifreligioniseveragaintomatter,itmustreversetheenginesand becomehard,dogmaticandexacting. Aboveall,sinceitsauthorityderives fromanotherworld,itmustnotbe ashamedoftheotherworldconnection. Onthecontrary,itmusttell'modern thought'togotothedevil,andstress theother-worldlyconnection."

wehavebeensoftpedallingConvincedthatourgenerationwouldnotlisten totheologicaldiscussionsandthatwhat itwantedwasevidenceofinterestin materialconditions,zealousrepresenta tivesof"theChurches"beganstudying economicsandmakingpronouncements oninternationalquestions,onlytobe toldwhentheyhadjettisonedtheir dogmasthattheyareoutofdateand thatthesedogmasandespeciallythe leastpopularofthem-thatconcerning OriginalSin-arejustwhatthepublic wants.Tosaytheleast,itishumiliatinganddisconcertingandsuggeststhat itmighthavebeenwisertohavebeen ,,,miewhatlessaccommodating.

Itisimportanttorememberthisdemandforatheologicalpresentation whenwespeakofaChristianPeace. EvenonthelipsofCatholicsthephrase sometimesmeansnomorethanapeace inaccordancewiththeethicalteaching Thri,tiarutyButthisethicalteach. ingisbasedonChristiandogma,andit isonlywhenthatconnectionisrealised thatitacquiressufficientdrivingpower tocreateapopularmovement.Itis theideologiesofthevariouspaganisms nowdisturbingtheworldwhichgive themtheirstrength Notuntilwe getatheologicallyexpressedChristianityshallwebeenabledtoinvokethe inspirationofourreligioneffectively. Incidentally,itisbyshowingitsrelationtothevitalinterestsofthehour thattheQueenofScienceswillcome intoherown.-"CatholicHerald."

Theoppositionofthe Catholic ChurchtoCoinmunismisnotsomethingnew.ItbeganwiththeappearanceofCommunisminourmidst: itwillcontinueuntilthehumanrace isfreefromtheCommunisticmenace.

Whythisshouldbeisevident.One hasbuttoreadtheofficialpublications oftheReds,orthehistoryoftheir brutalpersecutionofreligion,tosee thatCommunismis,andmustalways be,theswornenemyofallreligion. TheCatholicChurchwouldbefalse toChristifitallowedCommunismto gounchallenged.

InMarch,1923,whentheCatholic BishopCieplakwitheighteenpriests wassentencedtodeath,thepublic prosecutor,Krylenko,criedoutin court:"Ispitonyourreligion,asI doonallreligions."In1939,afew daysafterthesigningoftheRussoGermanpact,the"Pravda,"official organoftheCommunisticgovernment, featuredaspecialarticleinsisting thattheanti-religiousmovement"is nowamatterofState."Itquoted Lenin:"Wehavetobattleagainstreligion;thisisthe&B.C.ofallmaterialism,andconsequentlyofMarxism."ItquotedStalin:"Weareconductingapropaganda(andshallcontinuetodoso)againstreligiousprejudices."

Communiststheworldover,and thisincludesourAustralianCommunists,mustjoininthiswaragainstreligion.ReadtheRuleBookandofficialinstructionsissuedtothem;they leavenoroomfordoubt.Themethod ofwarfareistobedeterminedbythe opportunitiesofthetime,nowpropa-

ganda,nowterror,nowclass-warfare nowplunderandpersecution. Thereisnosurprise,then,thatthe CatholicBishopshaveopposedthe liftingofthebanontheAustralian CommunistParty.Nosincerefollow erofChristcoulddootherwise.To liftthebanwouldbetogiveafreego toasystemwhichtheHolyFathe hasdescribedas"atheistic,anti-Chris Sianandinhuman

TheonlythingwantingwastheDictatororDictatorstosetthemachinery working.

Ofcourse,saidHisGrace,theywere toldthattheworstcouldnothappen. here.ButlikeassurancesdidnotpreventthingsfromhappeninginRussia, inGermany,orinItaly.

Atthepresenttime,HisGracewent on,theFederalGovernmentwaslookingforincreasedpower,notonlyduringwartime,butforthepeacetime thatwascoming,andespeciallyfor theperiodofreconstruction.

Sofarashecouldjudge,theFederal Governmentshouldhave,nowand later,awell-definedextensionofpower, andhehopedtheywouldgetit.

But,forthemoment,hewasnotconcernedwithpoliticalissues,butonly withfreedomofreligion,includingeducation.Afterthealarmingstatement ofDr.Evatt-andtherewasnohigher legalauthority-heventuredtosay thattheConstitutionneededtwoamendmentsoftprovidedbyDr.Evatt.

First,thereoughttobeaclear,definite,fundamentalassertionthatallauthority,whetherofEmperor,orKing, orParliament,orotherbody,came fromGod;and,therefore,thatallhumanlawmustbefittedinto,andconformablewith.God'slaw.

Itwouldthenfollowatoncethatthe

legalatrocitiestowhichDr.Evattre. feredwould'notbeinrealitylegalenactmentsatall,butonlyinvalidusurpations.

Secondly,hethoughtthat,inviewof Dr.Evatt'sstatement,thereshouldbe anexpressdeclarationthatParliament hadnopowertointerferewithfreedom ofreligion.

IftheStatesclaimedbyahuman legalfictiontohavesuchpower,it shouldbedefinitelytakenfromthem inlanguagethattheycouldunderstand;andforthesamereasons,that powershouldnotbehandedtothe FederalParliament.

Moreover,hethoughtthereshould beanon-politicaltribunal,suchasthe HighCourt,towhichthosewhomight feelthemselvesaggrievedcouldappeal againstanyactionofParliamentallegedlyencroachinguponreligiousfreedom.ThepoliticiansandtheStates couldbetrustedtolookaftertheir owninterests.Buthewasconcernedwithfundamentalprinciplesthat seemedtobeforgottenorignored.
