SomeArmydoctorsandinstructorstakeitforgrantedthatthemen ofthefightingforcesleadimmorallives,andtheybasetheirlecturesto thetroopsonthatassumption.

HisGracetheArchbishopofSydney,theMostRev.N.T.Gilroy,D.D., saidthatduringanaddressatAuburnonarecentSunday.

Thisfalseassumption,hesaid,wasresentedbymanyyoungCatholic men,anditwasanindicationofthelowgradeofmoralityofthelecturers themselves.

ThefulltextofhisGrace'saddress, deliveredaftertheblessingofthenew residencefortheMaristBrothersat Auburn,isasfollows:

"Theverygreatvalueofschools thatareconductedbyBrothersconsist inthis:Boysaretaughtvirtue,while secularknowledgeisimpartedtothem, Thisistaughttothemevenmorepowerfullybyexamplethanitisbyprecept.

"ThelivesoftheBrothers,cultured, saintlymen,areinthemselvesaneducationandinstructiontoeveryboy whohasthegoodfortuneofcoming undertheirinfluence.

"Thisoutstandinglessonistaughtby theBrothers:Godmustbelovedin thefirstplace;andthereistheobligationofusingthegiftsofGodaccord. ingtoGod'sownexpressdesire.

'Morethanever,perhaps,inthe historyofthehumanrace,sucheducationisrequired.to-day,

Some,unfortunately,wilt disappointinglyunderthestrain.Others themajority,Ihopeandcertainlybelieve,sustainitmagnificently.A proofthattheydoisgiveninthis.

"Onefrequentlyhearscomplaints andexpressionsofresentmentbyour youngmenwhohavebeenthrowninto thefightingforcesagainsttheattitude thatisadoptedbyinstructorsandby doctors,towhoselecturestheyare compelledtolisten.Someofthese menwhoshouldbeleadingouryoung mentonobleideals,insteadtakeit forgrantedandassumethattheirlives arelivesofimmorality.

"Theyassumethatthisisthenormal conditionofeverynormalman,This falseassumption,resentedbythose grand,youngmen,isbutanindication ofthelowgradeofmoralityofthese menthemselves.

"Whilewelamentthatthereshould besuchmenlecturingtotheyouthof ourfightingforces,werejoiceinthe factthatsomanyofouryoungmen resentbeingtreatedasmenalreadyof degradedcharacter.

TwicetheJapanesewenttotheMissionStationofRuavatutogetthemissionariestoputthemthroughaquestioning.Thefirsttimetheytookthe twoFathersandtwoofthethreeSistersawaywiththemtoTasimboko,a fewmileswestofthestation.This firsttimetheywereimprisonedonly afewhours,shownthebattlefieldbehindtheJapaneselines,andthena whilelaterwereletgofree.

Threeweekslater,theJapanese wentagaintothemissionstation,and thistimetookthetwoFathers,asbefore,andSistersM.SylviaandM. 10dilia.

Asontheformeroccasiontheytook themtoTasimboko,andfor15days keptthemimprisonedthereinanative house.

Consequently,duringthebigbattle forTasimlx)kotheywereunderthe bombardment,andinthemidstof themachine-gunning,huddledina flimsy,nativehouse,whichmustbe theonethatservedthemasprison. Theyhadtosleeponthebareground.

Then,whentheJapaneseweredefeated,beforeleavingtheplace,they killedtheirpoorvictimsbythrusting abayonetintheirthroats.Thiswas verifiedbythemarksofthebayonet, clearlyvisibleintheirthroats,when thebodieswerefound.

Thetragedyprobablyoccurredon September14or15,theirdeathscoincidingwiththeFeastoftheExaltationoftheHolyCross,orwiththat oftheSevenDoloursofOurLady.

Thenativeswhowenttocleanup thevillageandgatherthesupplies andammunitionleftbytheJapanese foundthefourbodiesonSeptember 22.Theywerealltogetherintheone

nativehousetowhichtheyhadbeen taken.

NunsWereFrench,

Shallowhistoriansassertthatthe sufferingsoftheIrishCatholicsduring thePenalDayswereentirelydueto politicalreasons,andthatth2professingoftheCatholicFaithwasonlya minoroffence.Thefalsehoodunderlyingthisstatementisapparentwhen weconsiderwhattheEnglishCatholicsenduredatthesameperiod.No chargeofdisloyaltycouldbealleged againstthem,yetthenoblestandbest inthelandfellasvictimstothe "PopishPlot."

This"plot"originatedinoneofthe basestmindsofwhichhistorymakes mention.TitusOates,aliasAmbrose, thepropounderofthisscheme,and thefounderoftheschooloffalsewitnesses,wasthesonofaweaverwho exchangedtheloomfortheBible,and distinguishedhimselfasanAnabaptist ministerduringthegovernmentof Cromwell.AttheRestorationofthe ancientdynastyTitusturnedwiththe tide,tookOrdersatCambridgeasan Anglicanclergyman,officiatedascurateinseveralparishes,andaschaplainonboardaman-of-war.From allthosepositionshewasdismissed formisconduct.HenowfeignedhimselfaconverttotheCatholicfaith, andafterasojournontheContinent returnedtoEnglandwithwonderful "revelations.'againsttheChurchin generalandtheJesuitsinparticular. Thewildestpassionsofthenationwere setonfirebythedetailsofthe'plot," whichGatessetforthashavingbegun inRome,andwassupportedbyFrance andSpain,tomurdertheKingand massacrealltheProtestantsofEngland.

Dr.Talbot,ArchbishopofDublin, wasthefirstIrishvictimselectedby Shaftesbury,nowtheofficialheadof theschoolofperjurers,ButArchbishopTalbotwassoEnglishinhisways, andsodemonstrativelyloyaltothe King,thechargefellthrough,andstarvationinprisonfortwoyearswasconsideredsufficientpunishmentforthis loyalsubject!AndthePrimatewas chosentopaythepenaltyforthe supposedcrimesofthenation.

Whenarrested,thechargeslaid againstDr.Plunketbythoseinformerswere:Thathehadbeenraisedto

Untilplacedinthedockthevictim

waskeptignorantofthenatureof thechargesmadeagainsthim.Those chargesweresoridiculous,heappealedforanadjournmentofthecourttill hebroughtoverwitnessesfromIrelandtoprovetheaccusationsfalse. Butthatmeasureofjusticewasdenied him.Andthejudgeswereprepared tobelieve,onthetestimonyofwicked men,thatDr.Plunket,withanincomeof£62ayear,wasabletosupport anarmyof70,000strong!

TheonlychargetowhichthePrimatepleadedguiltywasthathewas aCatholicBishopincommunionwith theSeeofRome,andthathelaboured tospreadandmaintaintheCatholic faithinIreland.Thiswassufficient fortheChiefJustice.

LonEssex,whohadbeenViceroy inIreland,appealedtotheKingto pardonthevictim,whomheprotested wasinnocent.TheKing,feelingthat theanti-Catholicwavewasathigh tide,darednotgrantthepardon.

Afew wereallowedthemartyr topreparefordeath.FatherCorker, aBenedictine,wasinprisonatthe time,andactedaschaplain.Tothis FatherandtohisillustriousOrderDr. Plunketconsignedhisbody.

Whenthemorningofexecution dawned-July11,1681-thevictim wasstretchedandtiedonawooden hurdle,andthis,attachedtoacart, wasdrawnthroughthestreetsofLondontothehillofTyburn,

OnhiskneesonthescaffoldtheArchbishopdeliveredadiscourseworthyof asaint.Herebuttedthemany chargesmadebythefalsewitnesses; declaredmostemphaticallyhisinnocence:saidhewasdyingforhiscalling,hischaracter,andhisoffice.Then likehisDivineMasterontheCross, heconcludedwithaprayerforhis enemies.

Everywherethereistalkof"Christian"reconstruction.Thetragedyofthepositionisthevaguenesswhichsurroundstheword "Christian"inmanyminds.Variousformsofhumanitarianism andnaturalismarebeingputforwardbysincerepeopleasChristianmanifestations,anditisforCatholicswhopossessthefulness ofChrist'srevelationtoshowthesemenofgoodwillthatChristianityisChristperpetuatedtotheendoftimeinHisMysticalBody. theCatholicChurch.

Itis,ofcourse,obviousthatthiscannotbebroughtaboutovernight.FortheissueswhichdividethesectsprofessingChristianitydrivemuchdeeperthandifferencesaboutspecificallyChristian doctrinesandpractices.Itisuselesstocommenceanargument inthemiddle.Onemustbeginwiththefundamentalquestions oftheexistenceofGod,ofHisnature,ofthenatureofmanandhis eternaldestiny.Itispreciselyintheserootproblemsthatmost oftheconfusionarises.When,forexample,theRedDeanof Canterburyclaimsthat"Communismhasrecoveredtheessential formofrealbeliefinGod,whichorganisedChristianity,asatpresentconstituted,haslargelylost,"itisperfectlyclearthathisbeliefinGodleansmoretopantheismthantotheChristianconcept ofapersonalGod.Itisalsoapparentthathisnotionsofthe natureofmanaresadlyastrayifhereallybelievesthattheefficiencyoftheFiveYearPlansisasubstitutefortheadorationof theBlessedTrinity.

Thetime,then,ismostfavourableforanorganisedattempt towintheworldbacktotheprimitivetruthsofChristianity.Never beforedidtherichesofCatholictruthshineoutsostartlinglyas againstthebackgroundofspiritualpauperismofthemodernworld. Itmaynotatoncebepossibletowintheassentofallmentothe fulltruthoftheChristianFaith,butitshouldandmustbepossibletorestorethosebasicbeliefswhichareessentialtothesanity ofman,tothesavingofhimfromdespair,andtohisreconciliation withGod.Thesearebriefly:beliefinaPersonalGod,inHisProvidenceovertheworld,inHisCommandments;someknowledge ofthelifeofJesusChrist,ofHisDivinity,andofthevastimport ofHisDeathandResurrection;ofrepentanceforsin,andofthe efficacyofprayer.

InAustraliaespeciallythisistheacceptablehour.Theeasygoing,indifferentposewhichisacharacteristicofourpeoplein peacetime,giveswayinacrisissuchaswartoanunsuspectedresoluteness,acapacityforacceptinghardship,andanunwillingnesstoacknowledgedefeat.Thesearesplendidnaturalqualities uponwhichthesuperstructureoftheChristianlifecouldbevery firmlybased.Inaddition,aboutasixthofourpeopleatleast representanamorphousmassofreligiousopinion.TheoldProtestantism,withitsdynamismandbitterness,isdeadandthenormalconditionofthesenon-Christiansisthevaguestkindofsubjectivism.Butwearenotaloneinthefieldofactionnorinthe possessionofthisknowledge.Communism,itselfareligionand aphilosophyoflife,isverymuchalivetothepossibilitieshereand nowpresent.NorhavetheMarxistsbeencontentwithidlespeculation.Thebattleisalreadyjoined,andtheapostlesofmaterialismhavealreadymadeappreciableinroads.ButCatholicAction. too,isdemonstratingareal,ifbelated,effort.Itisbetweenthese twoforcesthattheissueofthefuturewillbedecided,andwhateverhappenswecannotaffordtofail.

ThesingingofaSolemnRequiem Mass(presidedoverbyHisGracethe Archbishop;inSt.Mary'sCathedral, onAllSouls'Day,byabodyofchildrenveryconservativelyestimatedat 2,500,wasasplendidculminationand awonderfuldemonstrationofthe splendidworkdoneforGregorian Chantbyourteachersandchildren duringtheyear.

Thesingingreachedthehigheststandardyetattained.Sobeautifula qualityofvocaltonehavingbeenarrivedatinalargenumberofour schoolsthatthebodyofsoundfrom thecombinedchoirshadanewattractiveness.Itwasstrongerand rounderthanbefore,andyethada gentlesweetnesssobefittingChristiansong.

ThemelodiesoftheMass"Requiem Aeternam"areamongthefinesthandeddowntous;indeedtherearepassagesofadramaticintensitythathas neverbeensurpassedinanymusicyet written.Whatafeatthoseoldwritersaccomplished.Toexpressatonce

IlecongratulatedFatherLynchand thankedthepriestsandreligious teachersfortheco-operationtheywere givingsogenerouslyandefficiently. TheCathedralBoys'Choirformed theSchola.AttheOffertorythey sangamotetinfourpartsbyAsola, onthewords,"PieJesuDomine,dona eisrequiem.'("GoodLordJesus,grant themeternalrest.")AlltheMass (includingthe"Liberame")wassung bythemainbodyofsingers,except theTract,whichwassungbytheboys.

\HisGracetheArchbishop,addressingthechildren,saiditwasconsoling tothosewhowereprivilegedtobepresenttoseesuchalargenumberof childrenthrongtheCathedral,andto hearthemsingsobeautifully,movinglyanddevotionally.

OneofGod'smostbeautifulgifts tomanwasthegiftofmusicandsong. And,beingararegift,wewereexpectedtouseittoadvantageingivingpraisetotheGiverofthegift.The Churchregulatedthetypeofmusicto beused.Itwascomposedbythe saintsandmonks,andwasconsecratedbycenturiesofuse.Suchwasthe musictheysangthatdayintheRequiemMass,andbecauseitwasso liturgicallycorrect,itwasallthemore pleasingtoGod.

Oneofthereallysignificantevents inthehistoryoftheCatholicChurch inAustraliainthelastfewyearsis theassumptionbyHisLordship,the BishopofWagga(MostRev.F.A, Henschke,D.D.)ofthepostofEpiscopalChairmanoftheNationalCatholicRuralMovement.For,althoughit hasbeenpopularlyrealisedinother countriesthatCatholicActionMovementsareofficialbodiesparticipating intheapostolicmissionoftheChurch, thisisthefirsttimeinthehistoryof thiscountrythatanationalspecialised MovementofCatholicActionhasbeen givenanepiscopalleader,thussymbolisingtheintimateunionbetweena laybodyandtheofficialChurch,and thefundamentalincorporationofthe formerinthelatter.

Ithasbeenpointedoutbeforethat themodernMovethentofCatholicActioncameintoexistenceastheresponsetoachallengelaunchedbythe modernworldagainstthebasicideas andinstitutionsofChristianity.The crisiswhichcradledtheN.C.R.M.is partofthegreatandfundamental crisisintherelationoftheCatholic tothemodernworld,butithasfeaturesofitsownofasurpassingseriousnesswhichrenderedthefoundationoftheRuralMovementamatter ofurgentnationalandreligiousimportance.

Itisnowmanyyearssincethefirst symptomsofthedisintegrationof rurallifemadetheirappearancein Australia.Thebreakdownofthelife onthelandwasindeedendemicinthe foundationofAustralianagriculture, forthecommercialtraditionwhich gaveitbirthwasonewhichcontainedtheseedofitsowndestruction.

Thesymptomshavebeenobviousto manyevenofthosewhowerenotconcernedtostudytheproblematits roots.ToaCatholicthemostobvious signwasthegradualtransformation ofdistrictswhichhadoncebeenwhollyCatholicintodistrictsinwhichCatholicswerenotevenamajority.The ordinarycitizensinterestedmorein thetotalnumberoftheruralpopulationwouldhavebeenstruckbythe magnitudeoftheimpendingdisaster hadherealisedthesignificanceofthe factthatbetween1914and1933the numberofmalesemployedinAustralianagriculturedeclinedsharplyfrom 211,000to189,000.Buthewasignorantofthefigures,andevenhadhe knownthemhewouldhavebeenignorantoftheimminentperilwhich theybetokenedforAustralia-forsecularismisthecreedofanindustrialsocietytowhichtheonlyevilisadeclineinthefiguresofindustrialproduction.

Itwasinevitablethatthistendency tofleefromthelandshouldbeacceleratedbythewar,andtheinevitable hashappened,Itisimpossibletoassessthefiguresatthemoment,butthe virtualdepopulationofmanyCatholic

ruralparishessincetheoutbreakof warisapointertothegeneraldepopulationofourcountryareas.The storyisthesamethroughoutAustralia.Sixmonthsgotherewerefive hundredCatholicsinoneRiverina town.To-daythereareonlytwo hundredandfifty.Thenumberof CatholicsinoneVictoriancountry townthreemonthsagowasonehundredandtwenty.To-dayitisninety, Oneotheralreadysmallcountrytown haslostforty-fiveCatholicfamiliesin thelastfourmonths.Thisterrible runningsorehasdepopulatedwhole districtsoftheiryoungmenand women,andthefutureseemstopromisenothingbutdecay.

Thereislittleneedtoexpatiateon thegreatnessofthecrisis,beitfrom thenationalortheecclesiasticalpoint ofview.Fromthelatterstandpoint itisclearthateventhebasicparochial organisationoftheChurchisthreatened.fortherearenowparisheswhich wereonceprosperousandarenowno longerabletobefinancedwithoutsubsidies.Thereareevenmoreparishes whichareonthevergeofthisdepopulation.Itisnoexaggerationtosay thattheChurchisreallyfacedwith thethreatofthebreakdownofits parochiallifeinruralareas.Ifthat aloneweretheproblem,measuresof exceptionalurgencywouldhavetobe takentomeetthemenace,forwhile itisimpossibletocalculatethepreciseresultsofthisbreakdownonthe restoftheChurchinAustralia,itis equallycertainthattheresultswould notbepleasant.

Butthatisonlyoneaspectofa crisiswhichismoredeep-rooted.The figuresoftheflightfromthelandmust beseennotasanisolatedphenomenon,butaspartofthegeneralpictureofthedisintegrationoftheland initssocial,economicandculturalaspects.Thefallintheruralpopulationhasgonehandinhandwithan increaseinthesizeofholdings.To taketwoStatesonly:in1929-30,there wereapproximately76,000holdingsin NewSouthWaleswithatotalareaof 172,500,000.acres.By1938-9thenumberofholdingshadfallento75,300,but thetotalareahadincreasedto174,600,000acres.Thesamestorywas toldinVictoria.74,100holdingsin 1929-30withatotalareaof38,300,000 acres.By1938-39thenumberof holdingshadfallento72,400,whilethe acreagehadrisento40,700,000.

Thesignificanceofthisincreasein thesizeofholdingsismostimportant. Onthefaceofititmeansthatrelativelyfewerfamiliesaredrawingtheir livelihoodfromtheland.Astheresulthasproved,itwascoincidentwith thebreakdownofanidealpeculiarly Catholic-thatthefarmisahomefor thefamilyandthatitspurposeisto enablementolivefromthefruitsof theearth.Initsplacewassubsti-

Thepositionispresentedconcisely inthereportoftheRoyalCommission ontheWheatIndustrywhichwaspresentedin1935.Atthattimethetotal debtsofthewheatgrowerswereestimatedtobemorethan£151,000,000. Thetotalvalueofthewheatgrowers' assets,includingland,stockandmachinery,wasestimatedtobe£136,000,000.Sothatalready,sixyearsago, thatsectionoftherualcommunity whichspecialisedinthegrowingof wheatwastotallybankrupt,witha deficiencyof£15,000,000.

ItistoBritainratherthantothe UnitedStatesthatEirelooksforthis andotherkindsofhelp.ThetraditionallinkswithAmericaareweaker thantheywere.TheUnitedStatesanditsIrishpopulation-ismoreopenlyimpatientwithIrishneutralitythan Britainis,andthefamilytiesare looser,largelybecauseoftheUnited Statesimmigrationrestrictionsofthe lastfifteenyearsorso.

Mr.Gandhi,however,opposedit, andhisoppositionwasnotbasedon merelypoliticalreasons;infact,ina lettertoMr.MacDonald,hesaidhis oppositionwas"amatterofpurereligion."

"Intheestablishmentofseparate electoratesforthedepressedclasses," bewrote,'`Isensetheinjectionofa poisonthatiscalculatedtodestroy Hinduismanddonogoodwhateverto thedepressedclasses."

GandhiandtheMissionaries, ThetrueGandhiwasrevealedagain alittleearlier--inthespringof1931whenheexpressedtheopinionthat Christianmissionarieswereoversteppingtheirrightsbyattemptingto "proselytise"thepeopleofIndia.

Hegaveashisreasonthat:"India's religionsareadequateforherpeople, andweneednoconvertingspiritually."

Suchexcitementwascausedbythis statementthatGandhi'sfriendsin Indiatriedtotalkitdown.Buttwo yearslater,hereassertedhisstand when,inanaddresstothestudents attheProtestantseminaryofJubbulpore,Gandhisaidhethoughtthefield ofmissionarieswasthatofsocialserviceworkers,andthattheyshould workinsubordinationtotheagencies ofHinduism.

In1932,Mr.Gandhiopposedthe adoptionofthe"TempleEntryBill," whichwouldhaveallowedtheuntouchablestousethetemplesofthe uppercastepeople.Thismeasurewas adopted)foroneorotherofthe nativekingdoms,butitsobservance wasmostlyinthebreach.

Inalloftheseactions,Gandhiwas actuated,obviously,bythedesireto keepHinduisminthesaddle.Though hehasworkedforthemitigationof restrictionsplacedupontheuntouchables,andthoughhehasdenounced untouchabilityas"anunnecessaryoutgrowth"ofthecastesystem,hestubbornlymaintainsthattheplaceofthe untouchablepeopleisintheHindu fold.Andthelawofcaste,hehasdetared,is"inherentinhumannature."

NoDemocracyinHinduism..

Thecastesystemisnotonlytheoppositeofdemocracy;butitisbased uponanunrealconceptofhumansociety.

Thecastes-therearemorethan 2,200ofthem-havebeen'comparedto asystemoflanes,runningsideby sideoveraverylongcourse,butseparatedbyhighwallsofsocial,religious andpsychologicallaws,throughwhich therearenogates.

Ifoneisunfortunateenoughtobe borninthesweepercaste,hemay neverhopetobecomeagrocer;if-

one'sfathermakesshoesofleather, hemayneveraspiretothelevelof thesweeper.

Theonlywaytotranscendthewalls ofcasteisthewayofdeath;bydeath andrebirthonemayadvanceupthe ladderofcastes,unlessoneviolates someruleofpurification,andtakesa stepbackward.

Theeffectofthissystemistokeep tensofmillionsinpositionsofhopeless poverty,andtoprevent,forreligious reasons,anyeffectivemeasuresaimed atserioussocialandeconomicreforms.

Democracyisadmittedlyapolitical systeminvolvingadherencetoideals, buttheseidealsarebasedonreason, notonimagination.TheHinducaste system,ontheotherhand,hasnofoundationinreason,otherthanthedesire ofonecastetomaintainsuperiority overanother.

YetitisthissystemthatGandhi'seffortswouldmaintain,Hespeaksof preservingIndia;butheisalways thinkingofanIndiathatisHindu.

"Non-Co-operation."

ThemeansthatMr,Gandhiwould useis"non-violent,"orpassiveresistance,alsocalled"non-co-operation."It issimplytheboycott,andtheIndian peopletakereadilytoitbecauseithas longbeenameasureofcoercionand punishmentusedbyonecasteagainst another.

"Ifyouwanttoknowwhythescores ofmillionsofthemasseshaverespondedtothecallofnon-co-operationas theyhaveneverrespondedtoany uthercall,"saidGandhi;"itisnotbecauseIgivevoicetothatcall,butbecauseitisborn,itisbred,inthem; itispartofHinduism."

How"non-co-operation"wouldhe receivedbyJapaneseinvadersisprobablyapurelyacademicquestion.Certainlythereisnotoleranceforanykind ofresistance-passiveorotherwisetoGovernmentintheJapaneseconceptoftheState,muchlessinthetotalitarianideologiesofJapan'sEuropeanpartners.

Inthemindofanypoliticalrealist, a"non-resisting"populaceisaninvader'sparadise.Moreover,Japanhas hadearlierinvitationstointrusion uponIndianaffairs.In1930,forexample,whileGandhiwasdirectinga boycottagainstEnglish-madetextiles, considerablepurchasesoffabricswere madefromJapanesemanufacturersby Indiantradesmen.

AstotheabilityofGandhitoinspire unityamongtheopposingfactionsof India,hispresentcampaignof"nonviolence"immediatelyledtoattacks byHinduriotersuponMohammedan businesshouses.

TherehasbeenplentyofopenhostilitybetweenHindusandMohammedansinthepast.Festivalsofone grouphavebeentheoccasionsforriot-

Yettherewasunityattheendof theFirstWorldWar,whentheMohammedanswereincensedatthetreatmentaccordedTurkeyintheTreaty ofVersailles,andjoinedwiththe HindusinoppositiontotheBritish rule,whichtheyregardedasasymbol oftheWesternpoliticalsystem.

Atthepresentmoment,theposition ofMohammedanleadersseemstobe oneofadherencetotheEmpire,and thecauseoftheUnitedNations.

Whatevertheoutcomemaybe,the

leadershipofGandhiinthepresent crisishasonemeaningoverandabove others;thisistheoppositionofIndian traditionalismtothewaysoftheWesternnations.Heisnotsomuchthe opponentofBritishruleasheisthe apostleofkeepingthingsastheyare. HemighthaveledIndiamuchfartheralongthewaytoindependence hadhebeenlessconcernedwiththe preservationofHinduism.

Thepresentgravesituationmaydecidewhetherornothewillbeableto maintainanykindofleadershipamong his375millionfellow-Indians.

Hisattitudetothecastesystem"Inherent"

Mr.Gandhi,however,opposedit, andhisoppositionwasnotbasedon merelypoliticalreasons:infact,ina lettertoMr.MacDonald,hesaidhis oppositionwas"amatterofpurereligion."

"Intheestablishmentofseparate electoratesforthedepressedclasses," bewrote,"Isensetheinjectionofa poisonthatiscalculatedtodestroy Hinduismanddonogoodwhateverto thedepressedclasses."

GandhiandtheMissionaries.

ThetrueGandhiwasrevealedagain alittleearlier-inthespringof1931whenheexpressedtheopinionthat Christianmissionarieswereoversteppingtheirrightsbyattemptingto "proselytise"thepeopleofIndia.

Hegaveashisreasonthat:"India's religionsareadequateforherpeople, andweneednoconvertingspiritually."

Suchexcitementwascausedbythis statementthatGandhi'sfriendsin Indiatriedtotalkitdown.Buttwo yearslater,hereassertedhisstand when,inanaddresstothestudents attheProtestantseminaryofJubbulpore,Gandhisaidhethoughtthefield ofmissionarieswasthatofsocialserviceworkers,andthattheyshould workinsubordinationtotheagencies ofHinduism.

In1932,Mr.Gandhiopposedthe adoptionofthe"TempleEntryBill," whichwouldhaveallowedtheuntouchablestousethetemplesofthe uppercastepeople.Thismeasurewas adoptedjforoneorothOrofthe nativekingdoms,butitsobservance wasmostlyinthebreach.

Inalloftheseactions,Gandhiwas actuated,obviously,bythedesireto keepHinduisminthesaddle.Though hehasworkedforthemitigationof restrictionsplacedupontheuntouchables,andthoughhehasdenounced untouchabilityas"anunnecessaryoutgrowth"ofthecastesystem,hestubbornlymaintainsthattheplaceofthe untouchablepeopleisintheHindu fold.Andthelawofcaste,hehasdeclared,is"inherentinhumannature."

NoDemocracyinHinduism.

Thecastesystemisnotonlytheoppositeofdemocracy;butitisbased uponanunrealconceptofhumansociety.

Thecastes-therearemorethan 2,200ofthem-havebeencomparedto asystemoflanes,runningsideby sideoveraverylongcourse,butseparatedbyhighwallsofsocial,religious andpsychologicallaws,throughwhich therearenogates.

Ifoneisunfortunateenoughtobe horninthesweepercaste,hemay neverhopetobecomeagrocerif

one'sfathermakesshoesofleather, hemayneveraspiretothelevelof thesweeper.

Theonlywaytotranscendthewalls ofcasteisthewayofdeath;bydeath andrebirthonemayadvanceupthe ladderofcastes,unlessoneviolates someruleofpurification,andtakesa stepbackward.

Theeffectofthissystemistokeep tensofmillionsinpositionsofhopeless poverty,andtoprevent,forreligious reasons,anyeffectivemeasuresaimed atserioussocialandeconomicreforms.

Democracyisadmittedlyapolitical systeminvolvingadherencetoideals, buttheseidealsarebasedonreason, notonimagination.TheHinducaste system,ontheotherhand,hasnofoundationinreason,otherthanthedesire ofonecastetomaintainsuperiority overanother.

YetitisthissystemthatGandhi'seffortswouldmaintain,Hespeaksof preservingIndia;butheisalways thinkingofanIndiathatisHindu.

"Non-Co-operation."

ThemeansthatMr,Gandhiwould useis"non-violent,"orpassiveresistance,alsocalled"non-co-operation."It issimplytheboycott,andtheIndian peopletakereadilytoitbecauseithas longbeenameasureofcoercionand punishmentusedbyonecasteagainst another.

"Ifyouwanttoknowwhythescores ofmillionsofthemasseshaverespondedtothecallofnon-co-operationas theyhaveneverrespondedtoany othercall,"saidGandhi;"itisnotbecauseIgivevoicetothatcall,butbecauseitisborn,itisbred,inthem itispartofHinduism."

How"non-co-operation"wouldIn receivedbyJapaneseinvadersisprobablyapurelyacademicquestion.Certainlythereisnotoleranceforanykind ofresistance-passiveorotherwisetoGovernmentintheJapaneseconceptoftheState,muchlessinthetotalitarianideologiesofJapan'sEuropeanpartners.

Inthemindofanypoliticalrealist, a"non-resisting"populaceisaninvader'sparadise.Moreover,Japanhas hadearlierinvitationstointrusion uponIndianaffairs.In1930,forexample,whileGandhiwasdirectinga boycottagainstEnglish-madetextiles, considerablepurchasesoffabricswere madefromJapanesemanufacturersby Indiantradesmen.

AstotheabilityofGandhitoinspire unityamongtheopposingfactionsof India,hispresentcampaignof"nonviolence"immediatelyledtoattacks byHinduriotersuponMohammedan businesshouses.

TherehasbeenplentyofopenhostilitybetweenHindusandMohammedansinthepast.Festivalsofone grouphavebeentheoccasionsforriot-

Yettherewasunityattheendof theFirstWorldWar,whentheMohammedanswereincensedatthetreatmentaccordedTurkeyintheTreaty ofVersailles,andjoinedwiththe HindusinoppositiontotheBritish rule,whichtheyregardedasasymbol oftheWesternpoliticalsystem.

Atthepresentmoment,theposition ofMohammedanleadersseemstobe oneofadherencetotheEmpire,and thecauseoftheUnitedNations.

Whatevertheoutcomemaybe,the

leadershipofGandhiinthepresent crisishasonemeaningoverandabove others;thisistheoppositionofIndian traditionalismtothewaysoftheWesternnations.Heisnotsomuchthe opponentofBritishruleasheisthe apostleofkeepingthingsastheyare. HemighthaveledIndiamuchfartheralongthewaytoindependence hadhebeenlessconcernedwiththe preservationofHinduism.

Thepresentgravesituationmaydecidewhetherornothewillbeableto maintainanykindofleadershipamong his375millionfellow-Indians.
