Untilplacedinthedockthevictim

Butthatmeasureofjusticewasdenied him.Andthejudgeswereprepared tobelieve,onthetestimonyofwicked men,thatDr.Plunket,withanincomeof£62ayear,wasabletosupport anarmyof70,000strong!
TheonlychargetowhichthePrimatepleadedguiltywasthathewas aCatholicBishopincommunionwith theSeeofRome,andthathelaboured tospreadandmaintaintheCatholic faithinIreland.Thiswassufficient fortheChiefJustice.
ThejudgescondemningOurBlessed LordsaidtheyhadnoneedoffurtherwitnesseswhenHedeclaredthat HewastheSonofGod.SotheprofessionoftheCatholicFaithwastreasonandblasphemyintheeyesof JudgePemberton.

LonEssex,whohadbeenViceroy inIreland,appealedtotheKingto pardonthevictim,whomheprotested wasinnocent.TheKing,feelingthat theanti-Catholicwavewasathigh tide,darednotgrantthepardon.
Afew wereallowedthemartyr topreparefordeath.FatherCorker, aBenedictine,wasinprisonatthe time,andactedaschaplain.Tothis FatherandtohisillustriousOrderDr. Plunketconsignedhisbody.
Whenthemorningofexecution dawned-July11,1681-thevictim wasstretchedandtiedonawooden hurdle,andthis,attachedtoacart, wasdrawnthroughthestreetsofLondontothehillofTyburn,

Oneofthereallysignificantevents inthehistoryoftheCatholicChurch inAustraliainthelastfewyearsis theassumptionbyHisLordship,the BishopofWagga(MostRev.F.A, Henschke,D.D.)ofthepostofEpiscopalChairmanoftheNationalCatholicRuralMovement.For,althoughit hasbeenpopularlyrealisedinother countriesthatCatholicActionMovementsareofficialbodiesparticipating intheapostolicmissionoftheChurch, thisisthefirsttimeinthehistoryof thiscountrythatanationalspecialised MovementofCatholicActionhasbeen givenanepiscopalleader,thussymbolisingtheintimateunionbetweena laybodyandtheofficialChurch,and thefundamentalincorporationofthe formerinthelatter.
Ithasbeenpointedoutbeforethat themodernMovethentofCatholicActioncameintoexistenceastheresponsetoachallengelaunchedbythe modernworldagainstthebasicideas andinstitutionsofChristianity.The crisiswhichcradledtheN.C.R.M.is partofthegreatandfundamental crisisintherelationoftheCatholic tothemodernworld,butithasfeaturesofitsownofasurpassingseriousnesswhichrenderedthefoundationoftheRuralMovementamatter ofurgentnationalandreligiousimportance.
Itisnowmanyyearssincethefirst symptomsofthedisintegrationof rurallifemadetheirappearancein Australia.Thebreakdownofthelife onthelandwasindeedendemicinthe foundationofAustralianagriculture, forthecommercialtraditionwhich gaveitbirthwasonewhichcontainedtheseedofitsowndestruction.
Thesymptomshavebeenobviousto manyevenofthosewhowerenotconcernedtostudytheproblematits roots.ToaCatholicthemostobvious signwasthegradualtransformation ofdistrictswhichhadoncebeenwhollyCatholicintodistrictsinwhichCatholicswerenotevenamajority.The ordinarycitizensinterestedmorein thetotalnumberoftheruralpopulationwouldhavebeenstruckbythe magnitudeoftheimpendingdisaster hadherealisedthesignificanceofthe factthatbetween1914and1933the numberofmalesemployedinAustralianagriculturedeclinedsharplyfrom 211,000to189,000.Buthewasignorantofthefigures,andevenhadhe knownthemhewouldhavebeenignorantoftheimminentperilwhich theybetokenedforAustralia-forsecularismisthecreedofanindustrialsocietytowhichtheonlyevilisadeclineinthefiguresofindustrialproduction.
Itwasinevitablethatthistendency tofleefromthelandshouldbeacceleratedbythewar,andtheinevitable hashappened,Itisimpossibletoassessthefiguresatthemoment,butthe virtualdepopulationofmanyCatholic
ruralparishessincetheoutbreakof warisapointertothegeneraldepopulationofourcountryareas.The storyisthesamethroughoutAustralia.Sixmonthsgotherewerefive hundredCatholicsinoneRiverina town.To-daythereareonlytwo hundredandfifty.Thenumberof CatholicsinoneVictoriancountry townthreemonthsagowasonehundredandtwenty.To-dayitisninety, Oneotheralreadysmallcountrytown haslostforty-fiveCatholicfamiliesin thelastfourmonths.Thisterrible runningsorehasdepopulatedwhole districtsoftheiryoungmenand women,andthefutureseemstopromisenothingbutdecay.
Thereislittleneedtoexpatiateon thegreatnessofthecrisis,beitfrom thenationalortheecclesiasticalpoint ofview.Fromthelatterstandpoint itisclearthateventhebasicparochial organisationoftheChurchisthreatened.fortherearenowparisheswhich wereonceprosperousandarenowno longerabletobefinancedwithoutsubsidies.Thereareevenmoreparishes whichareonthevergeofthisdepopulation.Itisnoexaggerationtosay thattheChurchisreallyfacedwith thethreatofthebreakdownofits parochiallifeinruralareas.Ifthat aloneweretheproblem,measuresof exceptionalurgencywouldhavetobe takentomeetthemenace,forwhile itisimpossibletocalculatethepreciseresultsofthisbreakdownonthe restoftheChurchinAustralia,itis equallycertainthattheresultswould notbepleasant.
Butthatisonlyoneaspectofa crisiswhichismoredeep-rooted.The figuresoftheflightfromthelandmust beseennotasanisolatedphenomenon,butaspartofthegeneralpictureofthedisintegrationoftheland initssocial,economicandculturalaspects.Thefallintheruralpopulationhasgonehandinhandwithan increaseinthesizeofholdings.To taketwoStatesonly:in1929-30,there wereapproximately76,000holdingsin NewSouthWaleswithatotalareaof 172,500,000.acres.By1938-9thenumberofholdingshadfallento75,300,but thetotalareahadincreasedto174,600,000acres.Thesamestorywas toldinVictoria.74,100holdingsin 1929-30withatotalareaof38,300,000 acres.By1938-39thenumberof holdingshadfallento72,400,whilethe acreagehadrisento40,700,000.
Thesignificanceofthisincreasein thesizeofholdingsismostimportant. Onthefaceofititmeansthatrelativelyfewerfamiliesaredrawingtheir livelihoodfromtheland.Astheresulthasproved,itwascoincidentwith thebreakdownofanidealpeculiarly Catholic-thatthefarmisahomefor thefamilyandthatitspurposeisto enablementolivefromthefruitsof theearth.Initsplacewassubsti-

Thepositionispresentedconcisely inthereportoftheRoyalCommission ontheWheatIndustrywhichwaspresentedin1935.Atthattimethetotal debtsofthewheatgrowerswereestimatedtobemorethan£151,000,000. Thetotalvalueofthewheatgrowers' assets,includingland,stockandmachinery,wasestimatedtobe£136,000,000.Sothatalready,sixyearsago, thatsectionoftherualcommunity whichspecialisedinthegrowingof wheatwastotallybankrupt,witha deficiencyof£15,000,000.
