Someofourfellow-citizensthinkit seditiousoreventreasonabletolook aheadtotheendofthewarandask, "Whatthen?"Others-notsosensitiveorsuspicious-thinkitfoolish. "Winningawarisabigenoughjob. Let'snotdivertourattentiontoconsiderfuturepossiblediplomaticnegotiations,politicalmanoeuvrings,territorialreadjustments.

SimeonStrunskyof"TheNewYork Times"editorialstaff,reviewingRaoul deRoussydeSales'"TheMakingof To-morrow,"says:"Itisrefreshingto comeacrossabookaboutto-morrow whichmakespracticallynoeffortto saywhatto-morrowwilllooklike."He speakssarcasticallyof"blue-printers hardatwork makingnewworld patterns amongtheflyingwreckageofprogrammesandprophecies." HeagreeswithdeSalesthatthefuture isunpredictable.

Ifwecannotbesure-orreasonably certain-ofajustandlastingpeace, whatarewefightingfor?To"lick" theAxis?Tore-establishtheprecariousstatusquoofVersailles?To avengethesneak-attackatPearlHarbour?ToreadjustthemapofCentralEurope?Torestoretheterritory

Anyoneofthesepurposeswouldbe bigenoughforanordinarywar.But notallofthemtogetherwouldjustfy thepresentGargantuanconflict.For thisisnotawarbutarevolution;and whenarevolutionisendednothing lessthananewworldmustbetheoutcome.

Isaynewworld.Notthe"new order"ofamaniacandasadist,buta neweraofcivilisation,If,whenthe wariswon,wegobacktotheworld of1914orof1940,thisvastrevolution willgodowninhistoryasaspecimen ofstupendousfutility.Andweshall haveWorldWarNumberIIIinanothergeneration.

Tojudgefromsomeofthecurrent slogans,wewentintothiswartoget Hitlerandchainhimtoarockor shoothim,ButHitlerisnotthe causeofthepresentcatastrophe.He didnotmaketheworldinwhichhe rosetopower,Thatworldmadehim, Nomancanproduceanearthquakeor atidalwave.Theearthopensand themonsteremerges:thetidalwave rollsinandthereheis.

In1918therewasacry:"Hangthe Kaiser!"Butifwehadhangedhim,

westillshouldhaveHitlerorsomeone elseintheimageandlikenessofHitler.

proofthatnoCatholiccanbecompletelyloyaltohisowncountry!As amatteroffact,becauseheisthehead oftheUniversalChurch,thePoperefusestoowepoliticalallegiancetoany earthlysovereign.Thisisinorder thatnoCatholicneedbeafraidthat thesupremereligiousauthorityinthe CatholicChurchmaybesubjectedto politicalcontrolorpressurebyany particularnation.Theresultofthis independenceisthatthePopemustbe temporalrulerofatleasttheterritory onwhichtheVaticanisbuilt.But noCatholicnotlivinginthatsmall territoryissubjecttothetemporal ruleofthePope.Infact,thePope tellsallCatholicslivingelsewherethat theymustbethoroughlyloyaltothe countriestowhichtheybelong.No CatholicintheBritishEmpire,orin America,orinanyothernation,owes politicalobediencetothePope.All Catholicseverywhereowehimobedienceinreligiousandspiritualmatters.

TheVaticanthroughoutthosefatefulyearscouldseethecataclysmabout tobreakoveraEuropewhosemasses werealreadylosttotheChurchandto Christianity.Throughoutallthose yearstheonlyvoiceraisedtocondemntheheresyandabusesofCommunismandNazismandCapitalism wasthatoftheHolyFather.Courageously,deliberately,andrepeatedly PiusXIhadcondemnedthesenew dynamicideologiesfortheliesthat theywere,offeringastheydidtothe millionsoftheWesternworldacure thatwasworsethanthesocialdisease underwhichtheygroaned.

ButChristianityhadbecomeathing ofthepast,andthevoiceofthePope wasasthevoiceofonecryinginthe wilderness,untilatlasthecried,with alltheanguishthatonlyhisChristlikeheartcouldfeelformenofevery nation:"Theclashofweaponshassilencedmyvoice."

Desperatelyhehadstriventoavert theslaughteranddevastationand grindingmiserythathesawonlytoo clearlywasabouttobeloosedupon theworld.Butitwasnouse.ConcordatswiththevariousGovernments ofEuropewerebroken,theHoly Fatherhimselfreviledandcaricatured, thePriesthoodhelduptoderision,the thingsthatCatholicsheldsacredwere profanedandpollutedwithofficialinspirationandconsent.Finallythe lawsofGodHimselfthathadgovernedhumanityforthousandsofyears weredeclaredoutdated,andtheTen Commandmentsweretornuptogether withtheTreatyofVersailles.From nowon"mightwasright,"andthe worldwitnessedthedeificationofAdolf HitlerandJosefStalin.Passionsof hateandcontemptwerebeinglashed intofrenziedviolencebythepropagandamachinesthathadlongago turnedthemassesintowillingsheep. Decencyandmoralitywereflungto thewinds,thearmyprovidedarelease fromresponsibility,andtheindividual

gavemoreandmoretoGovernments thatwantedmoreandmore.

Notthatthisisthefirsttimein historythatoutrightStateologyand thedoctrinethat"mightisright"has seizedwholenations,butitwasChristianitythatreplaceditinthebeginingwithallthatisfinestandmost trulyhumaninourWesterncivilisation;itwasthedoctrinesthattheCatholicPriesthoodstillteachesto-day thattransformedwhatwassomething unnaturalandinhumanintoawayof lifethatwasnaturalandhuman,as Godmeantittobe.

Thereis,atthemoment,aconcertedmovementthroughoutthe CommonwealthtoforcethehandoftheFederalGovernmentto liftthebanfromtheCommunistParty.Normallythisagitation wouldhavereceivedscantattention,fortheAustralianpeoplewere undernoillusionastotherealmotivesandaimsoftheCommunist PartyuptothemomentthatGermanyattackedRussia.Butthree factorshavenowarisentocloudtheissue.Thefirstisthefact thattheAlliesareinmilitaryalliancewiththeSovietUnion.DespitealltheasertionsofMr.Churchill,Mr.Menzies,andothers thatthisalliancewasexclusivelymilitaryincharacterandofno higheroriginthanoneofdireexpediency,thetenuousdistinction hasbrokendownasitwasboundtodo.Peoplehavecometo identifythedefenceofRussiannationalismwithavagueapprobationoftheBolshevistsystem.Theywereconfirmedinthisview, firstly,byMr.Eden's"triumph"insecuringa20-yeartreatywith Russia,andmorerecently,bythedecisonoftheAustralianGovernmenttoexchangediplomaticrepresentativeswiththeSoviet.

Thesecondfactwhichhelpstoobscuretherealissueatstake isthepopularadmirationforthesuccessfulRussianresistanceto theGermaninvader.Thesourcefromwhichsuchvalourand powerofendurancespringmustindeedbesoundandworthyof emulation,itisargued.Wehavenotheardthesepaeansofpraise forthelong-sufferingChinese,norhaveweheardanyacknowledgementofthethree-years'resistanceofferedtotheGermansbythe Tzaristarmies,badlyofficeredandsuppliedastheywere,andin constantdreadofinternaldisruption.NordoesittakeintoaccountthatthemassproductionoftheFiveYearPlanswasdirectedprimarilytowardsawarpotential,sothatthesurprisingthing isnotthattheRussianArmyisformidable,butthatitisnot"invincible"astheCommunistnoisilyproclaimedthroughsomany years.Thethirdelementofconfusionarisesoutofthewell-establishedCommunisttechniqueofpersuadingpersonsinkeypositions tolendweighttotheirspecialpleading.Thesepeople,forthe mostpartparsonsandprofessors,usuallysucceedquitenoticeably intransmittingtheirpersonalvaguenesstothepopulaceatlargo.

CatholicsinrecentyearshavegiventheAustralianpeoplea veryvaluableandpositiveleadinsocialmatters.Theirproposals philosophy,andtheywillnotbe contenttostandidlybywhiletheCommunistPartyisbeingmade respectableagain.WhateverpositiveidealsCommunismprofesses,itschieffactualachievementstothemomenthavebeenin thedirectionofdestruction.Inthistheirtechniqueisstrangely similartothatofIslam.Butthetalentforpullingthingsdown isinnosenseunique.Itisexercisedquiteefficientlybybabiesand lunatics.EventheconstructiveattemptsofBolshevismhinged largelyaboutthe"liquidation"ofobstacles,humanandotherwise. HencethesevenCatholicBishopsofNewSouthWales,representing600,000peopleinthatState,haveurgedtheCommonwealth GovernmenttocontinuetheenforcementofthebanontheCommunistParty.IftheGovernmentisbluffedintolegalisingthe Redfraternity,theymighteasilyheamajorembarrassmentagain intheeventofaRussiancollapse,astheywereinthedayswhen RussiawasinleaguewiththeFascists.WefancytheFederal GovernmentistooshrewdtobelievethattheCommunistshave alteredinanyfundamentalrespect.

Catholic,.inrecentyearshavegiventheAustralianpeoplea veryvaluableandpositiveleadinsocialmatters.Theirproposals arerootedinaclear-cutsocialphilosophy,andtheywillnotbe contenttostandidlybywhiletheCommunistPartyisbeingmade respectableagain.WhateverpositiveidealsCommunismprofesses,itschieffactualachievementstothemomenthavebeenin thedirectionofdestruction.InthistheirtechniqueisstrangelysimilartothatofIslam.Butthetalentforpullingthingsdown isinnosenseunique.Itisexercisedquiteefficientlybybabiesand lunatics.EventheconstructiveattemptsofBolshevismhinged largelyaboutthe"liquidation"ofobstacles,humanandotherwise.
