ThisLittleFlowercamefromoneof themostcharmingandvirtuousfamiliesinthewholeofFrance;nay,itmay besaid,thatinthehistoryofthe ChurchtheMartinfamilyrankshigh inthelistofthoseChristianfamilies whichhavebeenfortheChurch,nurseriesofsaints.
Everymorningthefatherand motherofTeresawereatMassand HolyCommunion,ThedaysofpenanceoftheChurchwerezealouslyobservedintheirhousehold:Though roundabouttheirhomeonSundaypeopleworkedunnecessarilyandmissed Mass.Theyneverdid:Andagreat dealoftheirSundaywasoftengiven tothereadingofgoodandholybooks. Prayersinthemorningandinthe eveningweresaidalltogether.The Martinswerecomfortableasfaras earthlygoodswent,butintheirhome nobodywasextravagantorspoilt. Moneywasgivenbythemtothe Church,tothePropagationofthe Faith,andtoallcharitablecauses,especiallytothepoor.Andtheexcellentparentsofthesechildren,oneof whomwasTeresa,oftenspoketotheir

YetthefamilycircleofTeresahad timeforitsinnocentjoyandlaughter. Teresaherselftellsusofherwalkswith herfatherandhowtheywouldvisit OurBlessedLordontheway.Then thegloriouswalksinthefieldsinthe country,thefishingexpeditionswhen Teresawithherlittlefishingrodtried, thoughunsuccessfully,tocatchsome fish,Howtheplayingofthemilitary bandattractedherattention,andhow allthebeautiesofnatureweremusic tohersoul.
Thenathomeherlessons,herbooks, herdolls,hergamesofdraughts;how allveryhumanandyetallsanctified bytheloveofGodandprayer.
Asachildshewasintelligentand veryopeninhercharacter,butextremelyhead-strongandsensitive,and couldbeverystubbornattimes,Teresaalsowasratherbrightandgayin herdispositionstillsorrowenteredher younglifeandmadeherinureserious andthoughtful;butTeresaneverlost herstrengthofcharacter.
Manylessonsmaybelearntfromher life,butwemustbecontenthereto learnfromherathreefoldlesson:Firstly,herspiritofunselfishness;secondly,herspiritofprayer;thirdly,her tenderdevotiontoOurBlessedLady.

Teresabecameasaintnotbecause shehadnofaults,butbecauseshe strovetocorrectthem.Evenasa littlegirltheSaintusedherstrongwill againstherself,andsethersoultosacrificeseveninthedaysofherchildhood,AndGodgavethismerechild manyanopportunitytosacrificeherselfforHissake.Allloveisproved bysacrifice,AllforGodandour neighbourandnothingforourselvesis thereallifeofanunselfishsoul:andif evertherewasanunselfishsoulitwas Teresa's.Onecannotcomeaway fromthereadingofherlifewithout beingconvincedofthis:"Thereisa happylife-foritwasspentindoing God'swillinallthings,""Fromthe timeIwasthreeyearsold,"shecould sayofherself,"Ihaveneverrefused anythingtoGod,"
Godtookherdearmotherfromher whenTeresawasamerechild.Then whenPaulinewastakingtheplaceof amotherinheryounglife,Godtook PaulineawaytoCarmel.Then,when leftaloneafterthesetwohardand heartbeltpartings,GodsentHisLittle Flowerasickness,whichmadeher youngheartsorrowfulevenuntodeath. Buttheyoungsoulofthissmallgirl wasequaltosuchappallingsacrifices: Fromtheageoffourteensufferingnow wassodeartoher,itwasajoy-not becauseofsufferinginitself,butbecauseitgavejoytoGod,itbought forHimthesoulsofmen.Sheprayedforanabandonedcriminalwhohad refusedallthesacraments.Teresa askedforhisconversionevenasheput hisfootonthescaffold-andherprayerwasansweredbecauseherprayer wasaccompaniedbytheofferingof suffering.
