Bythelawofassociation,ifforno otherreason,itisimpossibletothink oftheChildWhosebirthdaywecelebratesosolemnlyeachyearwithout thinkingofHismother,Assheoccupiesacentralpositioninthelast sceneofHismortallife,sodoesshein thefirst,Hisbirthdayisinaspecial sensethefeastofchildhoodinthe sensethatitscelebrationhasacharacterofchildlikegaietywhichbelongs tonootherseason.Butonthatvery accountitisthefeastofmotherhood. TheVocationofMotherhood.
InauniquesensetheMotherofGod wascalledtoherholytask,Nevertheless,thiscallingexemplifiestheideal characterofallmotherhood,Mary cameofaraceinwhichthisfactwas recognisedinaspecialdegree.She fulfilledatraditionwhichhaddistinguishedherpeoplefromthebeginning andevennowdistingishesthem,But thereligiouscharacterofthisvocation mustheclearlyunderstood.
Itmustnotbeconfused,forinstance,with"thecallofnature,"That isinmanycasesaveryrealthing,and itisoneofthetragediesofthisworld thatmanywhowouldfainachieve motherhoodeitherbysterility(naturalorself-induced)orbyfailureto meetthemanwithwhomtheymight beunitedinholymatrimony,are doomedtomissit.Butitdoesnotin itselfconstitutesufficientgroundsfor matingandbearingchildren.That religiouscall,infact,maycomein spiteofdisinclination.Theacceptanceofmatrimonyunderconditions whichexcludeit,istofrustratethe willofGodandthepurposewithwhich Heinstitutedmarriage. Nolessmustitbedistinguished fromthedemandsofGovernmentsfor "cannon-fodder."Intheiropposition toBirth-Control,Catholicshavesometimesfailedtodistinguishtheircase
withsufficientexplicitnessfromthat oftheStateandtheraceanxiousto populatetheearthandthuscrowd outotherpeoples.
Itiswiththerealisationofmotherhoodasareligiousvocationthatbeginstheprocessbywhichtheterm shouldbeappliedtoallsociallyserviceableoccupations.Religiouscelibacyhasconservedanidealagainst thedaywhenweshouldbereadyto extendittothefarmer,thecraftsman, thebusinessmanandtheruler,Celibacysofarfrombeingadenialofthe idealinrelationtoparentagecontributestoitsfulfilmentinthatsphere itsmostvaluablequality.Itismerelythenegativeaspectofatruthwhich findsitspositiveaspectinthebearing andrearing,underadivinemandate, ofchildren.And,inthesameway, themotherwhoexemplifiestheconsciousnessofareligiousvocationinher maternityisconservinganidealwhich itistobehoped,willbeforelonggovernthefaithfulineverydepartment ofhumanactivity.

TheFulfilmentofWomanhood,
Althoughsupernaturalinitsorigin, Mary'svocationwasinaccordwith naturalinstinct.Womenhavedistinguishedthemselvesinliterature,art, science,politics,andeveninwar.But innoneofthesedotheyappearin theirdistinctiveroleaswomen.There havebeensaintswhohaveachieved sanctity,itmaybesaidwithoutdisrespect,inspiteofthefactthatthey havebeenwivesandmothers,Though exemplifyingthefactthatsanctityis notincompatiblewithdomesticlife, theyhavenotattainedtotheunique glory,whichmaybeclaimedforOur Lady,ofexemplifyingsanctityinthe exerciseoftheirfunctionsasmothers. Itisnotasaholywomanwhohappenedtobealsoamotherthatwe honourherwhoboreJesus.Itissolelyonaccountofhermotherhoodthat shereceivesourhomage, Hadshebeenknowntousasagreat patriot,likeQueenEstherorhercountrywomanJudith,greatlyasshemight havebeenhonoured,itwouldhave beeninarealmsharedbymenthat weshouldhavefoundherclaimsto recognitionandnotasawomanexercisingpreciselythosefunctionswhich aredistinctiveofwomanhood.In her,therefore,wehonournotsimply theindividualbutallwhofulfilthe sacredvocationpeculiartohersex. Inapeculiarsense,sheisconspicuous inhistoryastheMother,Infact, shehasnootherclaimuponus.Beyondthis,weknownothingabouther. Afteroccupyingthecentreofthestage atthecommencementofthestoryconcerningherSon,shepassesintoalmost completeobscurity.Beyondthefact thatshewasthemotherofJesusand whatisrelatedtothat,weknow nothingabouther.Wehavearight, therefore,toconsiderherastheembodimentforalltimeofmotherhood. Becauseofthis,theFeastoftheNativity,whereinsheplayssoimportant apart,istheFeastofAllMothersthespecialoccasionforpayingour debtofloveandgratitudetothe mothersofourrace.

Now,itisoneofthemeritsofMr, Harsch'sbookthatthoughhedoesnot attempttoanswerthesequestionsdirectly-his"reporter'saccountofGermany,"ashecallsit,onlygoesdown toJune,1941-hedoesindirectlysupplythelinesonwhichweoughtto thinkandshowwhereasafeansweris likeliesttobefound.Itisclear,for instancethatGermancivilianmorale isunsound.Itisasyntheticmorale basedonnothingbetterthanthediscoverythatwarcanbeprofitablefor thewiningsideandontheirexpectationofvictory.

The"ReligionandLife"week,whichconcludedrecentlyin Brisbane,wasremarkableinthatitincludedthisyearanofficially accreditedCatholicrepresentative.Hisstrikingremarksunthe familyandthemotiveofindustryareprintedelsewhereinthis issue.Now,despitethemanyfundamentalquestionsdiscussed onthatoccasiontruststheChristianoutlook,onewastreatedperforceverygently,andthatwastheeducationissue.Yetitis acardinalpointinanyproposalfuraChristianreconstructionin Australia.FurifthesecularismoftheStateschoolspersists,all theeffortsofthefamilyandofarightlyorderedsocietywillbedefeatedfromwithin.Tragically,forvariousreasons,theCatholic to-dayisalmostcompletelyisolatedinhisstandagainstsecularism.YettheStateschool,:didnutconicintoexistencebecause a"neutral"educationwasconsideredsuperior,butsimplyoutof hatredofCatholicism.ThisspiritwasfreelyconfessedbySir HenryParkes,whenheheldalofthisdraftofthePublicInstructionBillatapublicmeetingandexclaimed:"1holdinmyhand whatwillbedeathtothecallingofthepriesthoodoftheChurchof Rome."Hewas,ofcourse,hopelesslywrung.But,whileit didnotmeandeath,itdidmeanagraveinjustice,whichtothis daypressesheavilyuponourpeople.Andevenmoreimportantly,itmeantthatthousandsofpeoplewhowi.tildotherwisehave grownupinsomesemblanceoftheChristianfaithareto-clay sheerlyandunashamedlypagan.
ThePublicInstructionBillof-1879wastheculminationofthe struggleforCatholiceducationbeginninginthedaysofFather Therry.TheBillof1879calledforthfromtheAustralianHierarchyajointpastoralonthesubjectofreligiouseducation.While itstirredthemalevolenceofthesecularistparty,itservedalsoto awakenintheCatholicbodyarealisationoftheimportanceofthe issueandagenuineenthusiasmforitspreservation.ThatprotestutteredbytheBishopssixtyyearsagohaslostnoneofits point.Itisstilltrueto-daythat"existingdangerstoCatholic educationaresteadilyincreasingsoastobecomeabsoluteperilsto religion,andthatunfairnesstoCatholicsisdevelopingintoabsoluteinjustice."YettheCatholicdemandsarenotforGovernment patronage.butforelementaryjustice.Allcitizensareobligedto paytaxationwhichisdevotedexclusivelytothemaintenanceand staffingofsecularschools,towhichCatholicsobjectasun-Christian,andthereforeinadequatetoimportthefulnessofeducation. WeaskonlythattheGovernmentreturntoourschoolsthatproportionoftaxationwhichwepay.Eventopersonsdevoidofany Catholicsympathiesthismustappealasafairandrationalproposition.

Foroverhalfacenturyourdemandsforameasureofjustice intheeducationquestionhavebeengrowingmoreandmoreinsistent.Howmuchlongercanthepoliticiansaffecttoignore them?Theearnestnessofourcaseisattestedbythestatistics of1928,whichshowedtherewerealmostfifteenhundredCatholic schoolsandcollegesintheCommonwealthhousingovertwohundredthousandchildren,withanunsalariedstaffofninethousand BrothersandNuns.TheseschoolsaresupportedbythevoluntarysacrificesofCatholicparentsandtheunselfishservicesofthe teachingOrders.Ifthesewereclosedto-morrow,theGovernmentwouldheinasorryplighttomakeprovisionofschoolsand teachersforsuchamultitudeofchildren.TheStatemustrecognisetheamountofexpensesaveditbytheCatholicChurchinAustralia.Surelyitwouldbenothingmorethananactofcommon justiceandreciprocitytomeetthedemandsoftheCatholicbody which,inallconscience,aremoderateenough.Itisablotupon thefairescutcheonofAustralianpoliticstonotethatGreatBritain, andpracticallyallothercountriesoftheworld,haverecognised atleastinpartthejusticeoftheCatholicclaim,whileAustralia aloneholdsaloof.Unlesstheclaimsofthereligiousschoolsare recognised,allproposalsforaChristian"neworder"willhehasical.lyhollowandimpracticable.

Thereisnopointinemphasising merelyforrecriminationthestupid selfishnessoftheBritish-Dutchrubber monopoly,whichatthefallofSingaporeleftAmericaandBritaintragic. allyshortofvitalsupplies,says "America"inaneditorial.Yet,says thepaper,thefactsshouldnotbeforgottenwhenthetimecomestomake peace.
OnApril7,Mr,Jonestestifiedthat theBritish-Dutchinternationalrubber committee,which,beforetheJapanese
founduswithastockpileofonly700,000tonsofnaturalrubber,andthe British,ironicallyenough,witheven less.Theyhadonly100,000tons. Thereisnopoint,ofcourse,inemphasisingthestupidselfishnessofthe British-DutchrubbermonopolymerelyforthesakeofrecriminationWhat ispastispast,andthedenunciations ofathousandJeremiahswouldbe powerlessnowtogetevenonepound ofrubberfromthejunglesofMalaya ortherichplantationsofJava.But the'futureisaheadofusandwhenthe timecomestoreorganisetheworldin thespiritoftheAtlanticCharter,publicopinionmustbeonitsguardlest theoldforcesstrive,astheyprobably will,toreasserttheirgreedycontrol.

DuringarecentEasterCampaign onesmallsectionalonegottwentyfivefellowworkersbacktotheSacramentsbytheirownefforts.Allsectionsaretryingtogetintouchwith ladswhilestillatschool,sothatthey canbehelpedandguidedintothe rightjobswhentheyleave,andall aretryingtoencouragetheirmembers tobecomeactiveandmilitantmembers ofTradeUnionsandtobringint themanatmosphereofChristianity.
Australianladshavealreadyprovedthattheyarecaableofthesameinitiativeanddevotion.Thereisalways theproblemofleadership,butCanon Cardijn-thegreatfounderoftheJ.O.C. -alwaysinsistedthatineveryparish therewaswaitingthetrueleaderif onewouldonlyseekhimoutandft= him.Leadersareformed,notborn, Wehere,too,areupagainstavital problemforouryouth,asrecentevents inthenationallifehaveproved,The world-widesuccessoftheY.C.W.under allconditionsandwiththemostdiversetypesshowshownecessaryitis thatitshouldbebuiltupinAustralia andhowtruewerethewordswhich CardinalVerdierspoketoeightythousandyoungChristianworkersinParis in1937:

Thealternativecoursewas"human reafforestation"throughtheprotectionofthefamilyagainstthepressure ofthe"modernconditions"which tendedtodestroyit.But"reafforestation"mustbeginwiththespirittheremustbearestorationofsocial standardsbasedonself-disciplineand self-denial,whichisonlypossible througharevivalofChristianfaithin ourowncommunity.Thismeanta returntoChristianeducation,inwhich sex-relationshipsarerelatedtospiritualvalues, Thespeakerplacedthesocialand economicmeasuresdesirableinthe family'sinterestundertheheadings, "defensive"and"restorative."(1) Defensive:Thereshouldbeastiffeninginsteadofarelaxingofthecode, inthematterofdivorce;theprocess of"onemoreconcession"shouldbe discontinued.(2)Thedemoralising

Theworkmustbebeguninthe Churchesthemselves,byteachingand preachingthetrueprinciplesoffamily lifeandrevivingtheChristiantraditionsandloyaltiesofthehearth.
