ARCHBISHOPMANNIX.

"Iwouldregardwithdeepsuspicion andwithgraveconcernanyGovernmentpolicythatwoulddrawyoung mothersawayfromtheirhomes,"

Thestrongcampaignofprotestby theCatholicnewspapersoftheCommonwealthagainsttherumouredextensionofthepublicnurserysystemto attractmothersofyoungchildreninto industryandagainstadvertisementdesignedtosecurethesameend,has beencrownedwithimmediatesuccess.

TwoFederalMinistershavegiven assurancesthatthispolicywillnotbe pursued.Theoffendingadvertisement hasbeenwithdrawnfromMelbourne newspapers, Anotablefeatureofthecampaign wasthesupportwhichwasgivenby theAnglicanArchbishopofMelbourne (MostRev.J.J.Booth,D.D.)tothe publicprotestvoicedbytheCatholic Archbishop(MostRev,D,Mannix, D.D)againstthispolicy.

Dr.Mannixdeclared:

"Ifwomenhavetofacewarworkit isaregrettablenecessity.Surelythe lastwomentobecalledon,ortobe accepted,foranyworkthattakes themawayfromtheirhomesareyoung marriedwomenwithfamilies, "IhopeAustraliawillsetherface resolutelyagainstanyfurtherattack onthesacrednessoffamilylife.I wouldregardwithdeepsuspicionand withgraveconcernanyGovernment policythatwoulddrawyoungmothers awayfromtheirhomesandtheirchildrenandembarkonlarge-scaleprovisionofnurseriesandcrechesforchildren."

InaninterviewwiththeMelbourne "Herald"onthefollowingday,Dr, Boothsupportedthisattitudeinthe followingwords:

"Theremustbespecialcircumstances whereamotherwascompelledtoearn herlivelihood,whenshemustoffer herselfforemploymentatthebestpossiblerate.Butasageneralrule,it wouldbeentirelywrongfortheState todeprivechildrenofahome,with thecareandattentionwhich,inmy opinion,onlyamothercouldgive."

"IhopetheGovernmentwillavoid anycompulsioninthismatter,ifsuch athingisinitsmind:'

Commentingupontheprinciple whichhasbeenraisedbythetwo Churchleaders,theMinisterofMunitions(Mr.Makin)declaredthathe fullyconcurredwiththeattitudethat themothersofyoungfamiliesshould notbeseparatedfromtheirchildren byreasonofworkinfactories.

Theattitudewhichhadbeentaken upbythetwoArchbishopswasfollowedbyaprotestofthemembersof alldenominationsofQueenscliff("V.) toMr.Dedman,whoisnotonlyMinisterforWarOrganisationofIndustry, buttheFederalMemberforCorio,in whichQueenscliffisincluded.

Theprotestwasthusworded:

"Thatthismeeting,representativeof ChristianChurchesinQueenscliff, stronglyprotestsagainsttheemploymentofmarriedwomenwithfamilies onwarwork,andviewswithalarmthe suggestionthatchildrenshouldbeleft inthecareofotherpeople.Thehome isthebasisofChristiansociety,and canneverbesubstitutedbythecreche. Notuntilallotheravenuesofemploymentindomesticservicebeautyparlours,luxurytrades,andnon-essential serviceshavebeenthoroughlycombed shouldmothersbeaskedtoleavetheir homesandchildren.Thismeetingfurtherprotestsagainstthepracticeof employingwivesofoursoldiersto workinfactoriestosupplementtheir payallotments.Iftheirallotments areinsufficient,Christianjusticedemandsthattheyshouldbegivenaproperfamilyallowance,andnotbecalledupontoundertakeoutsideworkincompatiblewiththeirdutiestohome andchildren.Asourparliamentary representative,wehopeyouwilldoall inyourpowertoupholdtheseChristian

principles,andwouldrespectfullyask thatyoubringthismatterbeforethe properauthorities." Inhisreply,Mr,Dedmanclaimed thattheGovernment'sintentionshad beenmisunderstood.Hedeclared: "Themunitionfactorieswhichhave beenacceptingmarriedwomenforemploymentonmunitionwork,havenow "Thehomecanneverbesubstitutedby thecreche."

AGUILTYINFIDELITY.

OwingtothenameoftheOrdergiven itbyitsFounder,theProtestantReformersimmediatelyappliedthename ofJesuittothebody,whichtheysaw wastobetheirbitterestfoe.What theProtestantsdidwithazest,the Jansenistsofthe18th.centurycarried tothepointoffrenzy.Nothingthey couldsayorwriteabouttheSociety wasbadenough,Thusin1762the ParliamentofParisissuedadecreein thepreludeofwhichoccurthewords: "TheJesuitsarerecognisedasguiltyof havingtaughtatalltimes,uninterruptedly,andwiththeapprobationoftheir superiorsandgenerals,simony,blasphemy,sacrilege,theblackart,magic. astrology,impiety,idolatry,superstition,impurity,corruptionofjustice, robbery,parricide,homicide,suicide andregicide,"

Ontheotherhand,nootherReligiousOrderhassocompletelywonthe heartsofsomanyPopes,Kingsand Queens,statesmen,menoflearning, andmenofletters,merchant,tradesmen,schoolboy,peasantandsavage.

Itshallbemytaskthiseveningto sketchasclearlyandasbrieflyasI cantheJesuitstoryofthepastfour hundredyears,inthehopethatmylisteners,iftheydonotjointheranksof ferventadmirers,atleastmaybeable todefendtheSocietyfromtheattacksoftheignorantortheill-willed.

In1491wasborninthecastleofLoyola,nearAspeita,intheBasqueProvinceofGuipuzcoa,InigoLoyolawho wasdestinedtobetheFounderofthe JesuitsandtobeSt,Ignatiusof Loyola, NowtheYearisaninterestingone forinthefollowingyearChristophr ColumbusdiscoveredAmericaandtold thestirringtaletothemonarchsof SpaininthespaciousMoorishcourtsof theAlhambrajustwrestedfromthe infidelbythepeerlessIsabella,For in1492endedthe700-yearCrusadeto freethepeninsulaoftheMoslem.

Hedefendedthecitadeltothelastand fellwithalegshatteredbyacannonball.Thevictorsdidhonourtothe braveyoungCaptain,andhewascarriedtotheCastleofLoyola,Itwas theendofhisdreamsofgloryinthis world,Hewasdoomedtobeacripple.InthisveryyearMartinLuther wasexcommunicatedandtheReformationbegan.

Weareallfamiliarwiththestoryof Ignatius'conversionfromdreamsof worldlyglorytothoseoftheglory andthetriumphoftheKingdomof Godonearth,Duringhislongconvalescencehehadperforcetoreadthe LifeofChristandtheLivesofthe Saints,andinthequietlonelyhoursof

theFarnesePope,PaulIII,andfrom himreceivedtheapprobationofthe OrderoutlinedbyIgnatiusandstyled theCompanyofJesus,WecallitSocietynow,buttoIgnatiusthatwould havebeenaverytamenameforhis militantband,Companywaswarlikeinsound,andspokeofskirmishes andbattles,ofvictoryandperhaps evengloriousdefeatAllofwhich heandhisOrderweretohaveinplenty inthecomingfourhundredyears.

In1541Ignatiuswaselectedfirst GeneraloftheOrder,andruledit untilhisdeathin1556. Oneofthe firstactsofhisGeneralatewastosend FrancisXavier,hisdearestfriend,to far-offIndia.

ItwasnowthatIgnatiushadtogive tohisOrderRulesandConstitutions thatweretomarkitwiththatindividualityandstrengthwhichhas madeofitsopowerfulaforceinbattleforhumansouls,Hehadgiven thefirstJesuitstheirspiritbyformingthemontheSpiritualExercises. nowhewastogivetheOrderitsstabilityanditspowerthroughtheConstitutions, Ignatius'greatlegacytohisOrder consistsinthetwoworks,whichdistinguishhimforalltimeasaMaster oftheSpiritualLifeandaninspired organiserwithalmostsuperhuman sagacity,TheyaretheBookofthe SpiritualExerciseandtheConstitutionsoftheSociety.

YoucannotunderstandaJesuitor thestoryoftheJesuitswithouthavingsomegraspofwhattheExercises are,ThefieryzealandtheextraordinaryprudenceofSt.Ignatiusarethe outcomeofthespiritoftheExercises, Henceitfollowsthatitisthesame spirithehaslefttohissonsandthe sameBookoftheExercisestobetheir TeacherandtheirGuide.

WeknowfromthewordsandwritingsoftheSainthimselfandfromthe testimonyoftheearlycompanionsin theOrder,thatthechiefandcharacteristicExercisesoftheBookwererevealedtoIgnatiusduringhissojourn ofprayerandpenanceinthecaveat ManresainSpain.

TheJesuitOrderconsistsoffour ClassesofReligious,TheSolemnly Professed,whoinadditiontotheThree VowsofReligion,takeaVowtogoto anypartoftheworldtheVicarof Christshallsendthem,andthatata moment'snoticeandwithout,ifneed be,themoneyforthejourney;secondly,theSpiritualCoadjutors, PriestswiththethreeVowsofReligion,PerpetualbutnotSolemn;thirdly,theApprovedScholastics,whohave madetheThreePerpetualVowsofReligion,butarenotyetPriests,and finallytheTemporalCoadjutorsorthe LayBrothers,Religiouswithperputual vowswhoassistintemporalaffairs.

TheConstitutionswrittenbySt,IgnatiusLoyolaconsistoftenparts: PartsI,II,andIIIdealwiththeadmissionofcandidatestotheOrder, thedismissalofthosecandidateswho arenotsuitable,andthemeanstobe employedinpreservingandtraining thoseonprobation.

AsyoungLoyolagrewupinthisRenaissanceworld,Spainalonehadstill thespiritoftheCrusadesandthe AgesofFaith.IgnatiusstandsbetweentheAgeofChivalrydrawingto itscloseandtheNewLearning.With suchatraditionbehindhimofloyaltytoGod,andChurchandKing,it wasobviousforIgnatiustodreamofa greatcareerasasoldier,Aglorious futureshonebeforetheyoungSpaniard.Spainwasrisingtothepeakof itspower,withtheuncountedwealth oftheNewWorldandthewarlike spiritoftherace.RuledinIgnatius'

St.FrancisXavier,ApostleofIndia, sicknessandpain,helearntofanotherkindoflife,inwhichmenand womenfollowingintheMaster'ssteps giveupalltofindHimandlosetheir livesheretofindthemhereafter. Slowlybutsurelyhebegantoseethe meaningoflifeandtoseethathehad stillagreatparttoplay,Butitwas onlythecourageoftheCrusaderand theloyaltyoftheKnight,andthe greatnessofhisFaith,thatwouldface thetremendoustaskbeforehim,

WiththesesixFirstCompanionsIgna. tiuskneltonAugust15,1534inthe littlechapelatthefootofMontmartre andmadetheirvows,Poverty,Chastity andtomakeaPilgrimagetoJerusalem.TheyscatteredthroughoutEuropetopreachandhearconfessions, withtheintentionofmeetingatVenicein1537togototheHolyLand. Anappreciativecrowdofmusic loverswaspresentattheopeningfunctionofthemusicsectionArtsGroup onSundayevening.August16.The beautifultheatreoftheC,B.C.,St. George'sTerrace,kindlymadeav*i ablebythePrincipaloftheCollege, providedafittingsettingfortheinauguralprogramme.Itwassucha pronouncedsuccessthatithasbeendecidedtoholdtheseeveningsmonthly. AlthougharrangedbytheGirls'Movementforthebenefitprimarilyofmembers,acordialinvitation,however,is alsoextendedtoallloversofthefine arts,Itishopedthatparentsand friendsofthegirlswillavailthemselvesoftheinvitation,asPerth'sleading artistsandmusiciansareenthusiasticallyco-operatingtomaketheseeveningsanoutstandingsuccess.That theirinitialeffortwasappreciated wasveryevidentatthecloseofthis openingrecitalandlecture.

Heoutlinedtheprogrammetobefollowedoverthenextmonthortwo, andthenintroducedMissMarcia Hodges,who,withDr,Forcleandhimself,gavetherecitalthatconstituted thesecondhalfoftheevening'sprogramme. Thetransferoftheownershipof AlaskafromRussiatoAmerica throughthefamousSewardPurchase in1867laidthefoundation,notonly foraperiodofmigration,climaxing intheKlondikeRush,butforCatholic missionendeavouraswell.

Fouryearsafterthepurchasewas madetheOblateBishopofAthabaska,Mgr.Clut,togetherwithFather LecorreandanIndianinterpreter, crossedthemountainandwinteredat PortYukon,Lateramissionstation wasestablishedatSt.Michael.In 1874thespiritualjurisdictionofAlaska wastransferredfromAthabaskato Victoriaandplacedunderthecareof thesaintlyBishopSeghers.ThiszealousPrelateimmediatelyturnedhis attentiontohisdistantterritory,and, withacompanion,madethearduous triptoNulato,whereheremained studyingthevariousdialectsandinstructingthenatives.UponhisreturntoVictoriahelearnedthathehad beentransferredtoOregonCity,where heassumedthedutiesofCoadjutor andlaterthoseofArchbishop.

Havingreceivedasassistanttwo Jesuitmissionaries,FatherTosiand Robauthesetoff,withahiredcompanionnamedFuller,forthe1,100 miletrektoNulato.Duringthat journeyFullerlosthismindandmurderedtheArchbishop,thussealingthe futureoftheChurchinAlaskawith thebloodofoneofitsgreatmissioners.ArchbishopSegher'ssacrificewas notinvain.Despitethelossoftheir leadertheJesuitsdecidedtoremain and,whentheirnumberwasaugmentedbythearrivalofnewrecruits, FatherTosiwasmadePrefectApostolic-

NosurveyofAlaskanmissionhistorycanoverlookthepartplayedby theheroicNunswhoansweredthecall toworkinthisdifficultfield.In1888 FatherTosiappealedtotheSistersof theCongregationofSt,Anntosend someoftheirmemberstothisnorthernmission,althoughhefearedthe rigorsoftheclimatewouldprovetoo severeforthem.TherewasnohesitancyonthepartoftheCommunity, however.ThreeNunsarrivedbefore alodginghadbeenpreparedforthem, buttheeducationalworktheyinauguratedisstillbearingabundantfruit. havebeenthefirsttojestatthenews thathisenemiesinEngland,being worstedincontroversy,hadrecourseto acampaignofabuseandridicule againsthim.Heisprobablytheonly theologianofalltimethathadhis nameinthepot-housesofLondon-a specialpotcalledaBellarminewas manufactured,bearinginfrontthe imageofaridiculouschurchmanwith ablackbeard.

TwootherSaintsoftheSocietydistinguishedthemselvesintheirwork asmissionerstothecommonfolk,the oneinFranceandtheotherinNaples. Thereareregularpilgrimagesinour daystilltothetombofSt.Francis RegisinLaLouvezinSouthern France,wherehedidwondersforthe Faith,InNaples,St,FrancisJerome, aspreacher,director,missioner,and confessor,spenthislifeforthepeople ofthecityandsurroundingcountry.

Itisperhapsbytheirworkforthe educationofyouththattheJesuitsare bestknown.Stepbystep,St.Ignatiushadcometoseethepossibilitiesof secondaryeducationasaministryof hisOrder.Stepbystepevolved,too, notindeed,thefundamentalprinciples, buttheirformulationandapplication indetailtothevaryingneedsoftimes andplaces. Inpart4ofhisConstitutionsthe Saintdrewupthegoverningprinciples ofJesuitEducation.Thirtyyears afterhisdeathFatherClaudeAquaviva,thefourthGeneraloftheSociety, haddrawnupaminuteplanofstudies,In1599,aftermuchlabour,discussion,testingandrevising,thereemergedthefinaleditionoftheRatio Studiorum,whichisreallyapractical handbookofschoolmanagement,but whichallowsusalsotoperceivethe principlesandnatureofthesystemof educationfollowedbytheJesuits.
