Nottheleastimportantphaseof C.W.O.workistheactiveserviceperformedbytheLadies'Auxiliary.These zealousworkersrecruitedforthepurposeofvisitingthesickandwounded inhospital,areperformingavaluable patrioticandcharitablefunction.Regularcallstomilitaryhospitalsaremade, andoneachoccasioncigarettes,sweets, literature,etc,,distributed.

Itallhappenedontheweek-endfollowingtheC.W.O.appealday.Jones wastakingaleisurelySundayafternoon strollinthebush,Hehadpaidno heedtothethreateningrainclouds gatheringonthehorizon.Histhoughts werelostinthebeautiesoftheAusalienbushland,thetrees,thebirdsand nature'sartgenerally.Hewalkedon andonuntilsuddenlywarnedofthe approachingrainbythelightsprinkle whichprecededaheavydownpour. Havinglefthomewithoutarair-coat. Joneslookedhastilyaroundforaplact toshelteruntiltherainhadpassed. Hisgazelightedonalargehollov:log, intowhichhehurriedlycrawleland layfullystretchedwhiletheraindropsplayedamerrytattooonthe trunkofthefallenforestgiant,Andthe raincontinued.Itrainedinsheetsin torrents,andinbucketfuls.

thehomerestraints.Hencethespiritualdangerswhichbesetthecareerof thesoldierareverysevereandso,proportionately,hisneedofthesupernaturalstrengthandcouragewhichreligionalonecanbringisgreater.To makepossiblethecelebrationofthe HolySacrificeandtheadministration oftheSacramentsinmilitarycamps, isaspiritualworkofimmeasurable worth.

HencetheworkofourChaplainsis crucialtothewholeschemeofthings. Andtheylabourunderverysevere handicaps.Forthespiritualadministrationofmilitarycentresisvery differentindeedfrompastoralworkin aparish.Incampthereisnochurch, nosodalities,nofrequentexercisesof piety,verylittlelayassistance-ina word,noregularityorcontinuityof effort,

IftheGovernmentcannotobtain thenecessarynumberofworkersfrom amongthemalesectionofthecommunityandisforcedtocallinwomen, thereisonlyoneequitablewayin whichthiscanbedone.Asthewhole

ofAustralia'smanhoodisclassified forservice,accordingtoageandtoreservedandunreservedoccupations, thereisnothingtopreventasimilar regulationoftheavailablewomanhood.

MothersWithYoungChildren, Indrawingupthelistofreservedoccupations,howeveritshouldbemade clearthatthelastcategoryofwomen tobecalleduponwillbethemothers withyoungchildren.Untileveryother avenueoflabourpowerhasbeen fullyexploited,thesemothersshould undernocircumstancesbecalledupon.
