InthesixteenthcenturytheProtestantreformerspreachedrevoltagainsttheCatholicChurch.Temporal kingsandprincesbackedthemup, seekingtheirnationalindependenceof theoneacknowledgedinternationalauthority.Politicallyandreligiously Euronewenttopieces.But,having abandonedthereligiousauthorityof theCatholicChurch,Protestantsfound themselveswithoutanyreligiousauthority.TheysaidthattheBiblewas asufficientauthority.Butmenmade theBiblemeanwhatevertheyliked, puttinganextraordinaryvarietyof interpretationsuponit,andsettingup everyconceivablekindofdissident Church.Religiouswarsandpersecutionsfollowed.Peoplegrewtiredof it.OntheProtestantprincipleof privatejudgmenttheyfeltfreetoabandontheCatholicChurch.Onthesame principletheyfeltfreetoabandonProtestantismandallreligion.Inthe eighteenthcenturycametheRationalists,professingtodebunkChristianity altogether,insistingthatmanshould gobyreasonalone.Theymaintained thatthisworldwasallmancould expect,andthatmancouldperfect himselfbyhimselfandforhimself.So faithinGodgavewaytofaithinman. Therushbeganforthisworld'sgoods regardlessofGodandthemorallaw.It wasaquestionofthesurvivalofthe fittest.Freecompetition,untrammeledbyreligiousandmoralscruples,enrichedthefewluckyones,butleft themassofthelabouringclassesinappallinginsecurityandpoverty.Man wascertainlynotevolvingtoasatisfactorystateoflife,astheRationalists hadpredicted.Theirsecularismhad robbedpeopleoftheChristianFaith, andgiventhemnothinginreturn.The culminatingpointwasthe1914-18war, Afterthatwar,effortstopatchup brokencivilisationwithoutreturningto GodandtotheChristianreligionwere madebyCommunistsandFascistswith theirtotalitarianStates,withthecompleteenslavementofman.Andhere weareto-day,withtheworstwarof alltime,withcivilisationgoingupin smoke.
