OnMay30,1453,followingthecaptureofConstantinoplebytheforcesof MahometII.,someofhisJanissaries enteredthemonasteryinwhichwas preservedtherichly-jewelledportrait oftheBlessedVirginandtheDivine Child,andbreakingitintofoursections carrieditoffwiththem.Itwas,perhaps,themostveneratedrelicinthe newRomebythePhosphorus,andits losswaslookedupon,perhapsnotunnaturally,asapunishmentforquarrels whichdividedthereligiouscommunity ofthatcityoversomanyyears.The deepregardinwhichitwasheldis perhapsbestillustratedbythesuperstitiousbeliefofcertainofthe Greeks,astheByzantineswerecalled, thattheHolySpirit,oreventhatof OurLadyherself,wasimmanenttherein.Thisparticularpicture,convenientlyidentifiedbythename"Hodegetria:fromitsprevioushome,asmall chapelcalledtheHodegon,wasreputedtohavebeenoriginallypaintedby St.LuketheEvangelist,fromthelife.
