AfterMass,themenproceededto theDepot,whichwasformerlythe parishhall,buthasbeenhandedoverto theC.W.O.forthedurationofthewar byVeryRev.FatherT.Haugh,0.111.1., asarecreationalcentreforAlliedServicemen.Hereadaintybreakfast wasservedbytheFremantleLadies' AuxiliaryoftheC.W.O.

DuringthebreakfastthechoirofSt. Joseph'sConventpresentedsomechoral numbers.Thestagehadanautical setting,andchildrenfromthePrimarySchoolweredressedbytheSisters torepresentUncleSam,Brittania,Air Force,Navy,Army,NursingSisters, andRedCross.Thesesangasong ofwelcomeinhonourofHisGrace,"Advance,AustraliaFair,""TheAussies andtheYanksAreHere"(asongcomposedbyanAmericansoldierinAustralia),and"It'saGreatDayforthe Irish," Afterbreakfast,aseriesofphotographsweretakenofHisGraceand themen,whogavethreecheersforthe ArchbishopandfortheCatholicWelfareOrganisation. Anotherfeatureoftheceremonywas thedistributionbyR.A.A.F.Cadetsof prayer-books,rosaries,medalsand otherpiousobjectsdonatedbythe variousConventsoftheState.

AlthoughtheDepotwasonlyofficiallyopenedonSunday,ithasbeenin usewithincreasingpopularityforthe pasttenweeks.Alreadyover2,000 mealshavebeenserved.These,togetherwithallotherservicesprovided bytheC.W.O.,areabsolutelyfreeof charge.Thisisacardinalpointof policywiththeC.W.O.

AndwhenthePhariseesurgedthat Moseshadpermitteddivorce,Christdeclaredthatthatwasnotalaw,but merelyadispensationfromthelaw owingtothebaddispositionsofmen.

AndHedeclaredalsothatHewas abolishingthatdispensation,saying, "Fromthebeginningitwasnotso."It isevident,therefore,thatmarriagewas asacredpermanentunionasoriginally institutedbyGod,andthatitsprimitivecharacterobligesChristianswho enterintomatrimony.

Q.:WhatistheidealofChristian marriagewhichtheCatholicChurch holdsouttoherflock?

R.:Thatshouldbeevidentfromthe definitionofChristianmarriage.ChristianmarriageisaSacrament,inthe receptionofwhichtwoChristians,who arehinderedbynoimpediments,give themselvestoeachotherpermanently, forthesakeofchildren,lifelongcoinpanionship,andmutualedificationin religiousandspiritualduties.Inthe EpistletotheEphesians,St.Paul stressestheidealbylikeningChristian marriagetotheunionexistingbetween ChristandtheChurch.Astherecan neverbeadivorcebetweenChristand theChurch,withwhichHepromised toremainalldaystilltheendoftime, sotherecanneverbeadivorcebetween Christianhusbandandwife.AsChrist haseverprotectedHisChurch,sohusbandsshouldloveandprotecttheir wives.AstheChurchhaseverbeen truetoChrist,wivesshouldbetrueto theirhusbands.Finally,astheChurch isfruitfulbythegraceofChrist,bringingusforthtothespiritualandeternallife,sotheChristianwifebrings forththechildrenGodsendstoher astheresultofhermarriage.

DOMESTICAUTHORITY.

R.:Thefatheristheheadofthe family,andhasauthorityoverdomesticdiscipline.Hisauthoritymustbe exercised,ofcourse,inareasonable way,andinaccordancewiththelawof God.Whilstthewifeissubjectto herhusband,sheisnotaslave,buta companion.Thefatherrulesbylove, notbytyranny;andthewifegladly co-operates,Childrenareallsubject tobothparents,withequalrightsand dutiesinthehome,olderonessharing

RIngeneral,thedutyofallthe membersofthefamilyistoco-operate forthespiritualandtemporalwelfare ofthewholedomesticgroup.Besides showingloveanddevotednesstowardseachother,parentsareobliged toprovidefortheirchildrenaChristian education,traintheminChristianvirtuebothbywordandexample,providefortheirpresenttemporalneeds offoodandclothingandshelter,and prepare,asfaraspossible,fortheir futuresettlementinlife.Children

theState.Domesticsocietyis,there fore,priortocivilsocietybothin natureandintime.Therightsofthe familyarenot,therefore,derivedfrom theState,norhastheStatetheright tocontroldomesticlife.Ithasthe righttocheckabuseswhichcouldbe destructiveofthecommongood.But itcannotinterferewiththepositiveadministrationofthenormalhome.The Statedidnotgivebirthtothechildren.Theparentsdid.Theparents,therefore,havetherightandthe dutytobringuptheirchildren,fosteringandpreservingthelivesforwhich theyareresponsible,andseeingto theirspiritual,intellectual,andphysicaldevelopment.Theeducationof childrenbelongs,therefore,totheparents,andnottotheState.Thepar-

entsmayentrusttheeducationoftheir childrentoothers;buttheseothers haveonlyadelegatedrightinsucha case.Therightalwaysremainsthat oftheparents.TheState,ofcourse. hastherighttodemandacertainstandardofproficiencyinsecularsubjects; butithasnottherighttosayhowor wherethechildwillbebroughttothat standard.Thatbelongstotheparents.Inconclusion,itmustbesaid thatthefamilyisthemostancientand necessaryofallformsofsociety,havingitsimmediateorigininthenatural lawitself,andderivingitsrightsfrom nootherandsubsequenttypesofsociety.

Youmaynotbelievethis.Butyou couldnotrefutetheclaimoftheCatholicChurchbyalackofunanimity, harmony,andagreementonanyessentialChristiandoctrineswithinher ownborders.Forsuchalackof unanimitydoesnotexist.

NODISPUTES.

Q.:Further,thesedisputeshaveoften beenaboutimportantquestionsof factandveracity.

R.:Thosedisputesarenotwithinthe CatholicChurch,butamongstChurches separatedfromtheCatholicChurch. IfanyCatholicbegantodisputeimportantfactsorteachingsessentialto theChristianreligion,hewouldbe calledupontoacceptCatholicteachingwholeheartedly,orbeexpelledfrom thefold.Nodisputeaboutessential thingswouldbetoleratedintheCatholicChurch.Andsincesuchdisputessoshockyou,youshouldadmire theabsoluterefusaloftheCatholic Churchtotoleratethem.

CATHOLICCHURCHUNIQUE.

Q.:InChristianity,however,theCatholicChurchclaimsapeculiarsup remacyandsingularity.

R.:I'mairaidyouwillfinditvery difficulttoconsidertheCatholicviewpointonitsownmerits.Yetuntil youdo,youwillnotbeabletoform arightjudgmentconcerningit.When yousaythat"inChristianitytheCatholicChurchclaimsapeculiarsupremacy,"youagainvisualiseallprofessingChristianChurchesasmaking uptheChristianreligion,andwithin thatreligion,theCatholicChurch claimingtobesuperiortoothers.Your word"singularity"isabetterchosen word.TheCatholicChurchclaimsto betheonetrueanduniqueChurchof Christ.Sheisnot"inChristianity" withotherChurches,claimingsupremacyoverthem.Sheregardsallother Churchesassectswhicheitherseparatedfromher,orweresetupindependentlyofher,andwhichclaimalso torepresenttheChristianreligion.But shedeniesthattheydotrulyrepresentit.Andsheasksthosewho wouldconsiderherclaimstoforgetall otherchurchesforthetimebeing,and considerherassheisinherself.

* CAPABILITYOFLAYMEN.

Q.:TheCatholicclaimtosingularity restsupongroundswhichthelayman,atanyrate,isincapableof eitherprovingordisproving.

R.:Thatisnottrue.Forlaymen havesucceededinprovingthegrounds fortheCatholicclaim.Iwouldask youtogetandreadArnoldLunn's book,"NowISee."Ofcourse,you mayreply,"Butheonlythinkshehas provedtheCatholicposition."To thattheobviousretortwouldbe,"You onlythinkthathehasnotdoneso." Atmostyoucouldsaythat,whilsta laymanmightbeabletoprovethe Catholiccase,youyourselfhavenot yetseentheforceoftheconsiderations adduced.

WHYPEOPLEDOUBT.

Q.:Thelapseoftimebetweenthe eventsthemselves,andthefirstwrittenrecordsofthemaloneseemssufficenttomakeotherwell-qualified andeducatedmentoquestionand doubtthepremisesonwhichclaims andargumentsarebased.

R.:Thatdifficultywouldnotonly militateagainsttheclaimsoftheCatholicChurchtobetheonetrue Church.butwouldequallyundermine thepositionofallChurchesclaiming tobeChristian.ButIdenythatthe lapseoftime,forexample,between theeventsoftheGospelandthefirst writtenrecordsofthemissufficientto provideanywell-foundeddoubtfor anyintelligentmanwell-informedon thesubject.Ofcourse,ifaman wantstodoubt,hewilldoubt.But even'grantedthattherebenowillto doubt,amancouldbewell-qualified andeducatedinothersubjects,yetnot wherethehistoricalvalueofancient documents,and,aboveall,of,theGospels,isconcerned.Thosewhodoubt theauthenticityoftheGospels,onthe scoreofthelapseoftimebetween themandtheeventstheyrecord,do soeitherbecauseofconsciousorunconsciousprejudiceagainsttheChristianreligion,orbecausetheyhavenot rightlystudiedtheproblemasitreallyis.ThosewhoprofesstobeChristians,butrejecttheCatholicclaims, donotarguefromthelapseoftime betweentheeventsandtheGospels recordingthem:theyaccepttherecords asauthentic,butdenythatwhatis recordedhasthesignificancetheCatholicChurchdeclaresittopossess Andthistheydothroughconscious orunconsciousprejudiceagainstCatholicism,orbecausetheyhavenot studiedsufficientlytheparticular pointstheydispute,Yourownletteragainandagainbetraysaconfusion ofthoughtwhichpreventsthatclear graspofthestateofthequestionwhich issonecessarybeforeanysubjectcan bediscussedprofitably.

Inourownsmallcitywehaveseen somethingofthemoralravagesofthe spiritofwar-timeabandonment.Excessivedrinking,leadingtosexual promiscuityandthebreak-upofhomes. isalltoosadlyobvious.Andwehave reasonforapprehensionthatourleadersarcnotdoingeverythingpossible tostemtheeviltide.OneglaringexamplehasoccurredinNewSouth Wales,ASydneyfirm,engagedexclusivelyonwarwork,hasbeenunableto completeseveralcontractsbecauseit cannotsecureanessentialcommodity whichisbeingusedinthemanufactureofcontraceptives.Whenthisfirm askedacompanymanufacturingcontraceptivestoreleaseportionofitsstock ofthiscommoditysothatwarcontracts couldbecompleted,therequestwasrefused.TheCatholicChemists'Guildof N.S.W.broughtthemattertotheattentionoftheCommonwealthGovern-

SimilarlyAmericanCatholiccontemporariesreportthattheU.S.Governmenthasgrantedapriorityinrubber tobeusedintheproductionof"prophylacticdevices."Whatevertheintentionsofpoliticiansandmilitaryleadersinthesematters,thefactremainsthatsuchactionswillleadtothe growthofcommercialisedvice.The hatefulpracticeofmakingcontraceptivesavailableinmilitarycampscontinuesandhelpsontheprocessofnationaldecay,Thecommonassumptionamongarmychiefsseemstobe

thatforamaninuniform,liquorand womenareaphysicalnecessity.Under presentconditions,themilitaryofficials donot,itistrue,advocatesexualpromiscuity.Buttheregulationscondone it,providednodiseasefollows.The realhorrorofthenastybusinessisnot thatphysicaldiseasemaycome,but thatmenandwomenareshamedand inthemtheimageofGodisdesecrated. Furthermore,thedefeatistattitudeto chastitysapsthefoundationsofthe wholemoralstructure.Toplantin themindsofthousandsofyoungsoldiers(forthemostpartlackinginelementaryChristianinstruction)thatthe Government'ssoleobjectiontosexual promiscuityisthedreadofdisease, mustinculcateacompletelycynicaldisregardofmorals,ashamelessattitude tothedignityofwoman,andatotal lackofself-respect.Theattemptto representsexualviceasinevitable isadiscreditedtheoryofmaterialism. sayingthattherewaseveryreason foroptimism,sincetherewouldbea businessrevivalunequalledsincethe NapoleonicWars.Somepeoplewill refusetobeworriedonthegrounds thattherevivalofCapitalismistobe takensimplytomeantheretentionof asystemofprivateproperty.But Capitalisminpracticedoesnotconnote asocietywhosedistinguishingmark isprivateownership.Itmeansasocietywheretheretentionofsmallscaleownershipisbeingmadedifficult tothepointofimpossibility,andwhere, infact,themassofthepeopleiseffectivelydeniedtherightsofownership. Itisastateofsocietywhichenables afewveryrichmentolivesafely amongmassesofdispossessedpoor.

InthissenseAmericahasbeenthe super-capitalistState,andwhenaresponsibleAmericantalksof"arevival oftheCapitalisticsystem,"onewonders whatmorecanbedonefortherichand whatmoreitiscontemplatedcanbe takenfromthepoor.Capitalistsocietiesarenowoverwhelminglyproletarian.Theprocessonlyneedsstabilisation, andthat,itseems,canbebesteffected byStateCapitalismbasedonforcedlabour.InitseffectsStateCapitalism willbeindistinguishablefromSocialism.Therightsoftheworkerofbarteringandofassociationwillhaveto goover-boardforthecontinuanceof classstrugglewoulddefeattheprimary endofpresentsocialtrends,whichis tostabilisetheCapitalisticsystem. Thiscanbestbedone,andindeedcan onlybedone,byremovingfirstlythe moralcontradictionsofsociety(as,for example,thelegalfictionoftheprotectionofproperty),and,secondly, theactualelementsofconflict,namely, tradeunionsandtherighttostrike.

Thestageisideallyseteverywhere forsuchacoup.Mr.Menzies,when PrimeMinister,seemedtoenvisagea NewOrderbasedontheretentionof war-time"controls."Henceitwas hearteningtoreadintherecentSocial JusticeStatement-"ForFreedom"thattheCatholicChurchinthiscountry isveryalivetotherealityofthedangersinvolvedinthis"totalwar"legislation.Henceitwarnedthat"intime ofwar,theseedsofdictatorshipare sownmoreeasilythanatanyother." Whileitisrecognisedthatthese"controls"maybenecessaryinthevastmajorityofcases,thereremainsthefear thatthey"maycometobeusedasa modelintimeofpeace andmay beaseffectiveaspaganCommunismor Nazismindestroyingthefreedomwhich theindividualandthefamilyshould rightlyenjoy."Furtheritisinsisted thatthesurrenderofourlibertiesis voluntary(unlessourdemocratic vauntsbeutterlyhollow),and,second. 1y,thatitistemporary.Howeverthat beviewedinAustralia,itiscertainthat someU.S.leadershavequiteother ideas.

Itseemedtomeespeciallyinfelicitous thatMr.Arnoldshouldhaveviewedthe futureoptimisticallyonthegrounds: lathattherewouldbeabusinessrevival,and(b),thatitwouldbeona scaleunnequalledsincetheNapoleonic Wars.Inthefirstplacethereisnaturallyandinevitablyabusinessrevival forthevictorsinwar.Thewinning nationverygenerouslyhelpsthevanquishedtoobtainfood,torebuilddevastatedareas,andeventore-arm. Someprominentfiguresonbothsides oramong.neutralsdonotneedabusinessrevival,forwaristheirbusiness, andsotheyassistintheimmediaterearmingofthevanquishedinanticipationofanewandproximatestruggle

ButMr.Arnoldfailedtoaddthatthe businessrevivalisinevitablyfollowed byahideousslump,thevanquished nationhavinggotonitsfeet.(Unless, ofcourse,intheNewOrder,itwillbe possibleforthevictorstocollareverythingandhavethevanquishedineternaleconomicsubjugation.)

Mostunhappilyofallwastheparallel withtheaftermathoftheNapoleonic

Wars.ForitwaspreciselyatthisperiodwhenmodernIndustrialCapitalism cameintoitsownanditsownreceived itwilly-nilly.Butwhileitwasundoubtedlyatimeofprodigiousbusiness expansion,itwasalso,andbyreason ofthesesamenewbusinessmethods,a periodofunexampledsocialmiseryand degradation.Thenewrichbrought thenewpoorentrainandtheywere superioronlyinnumbers.Itisoneof themosttragicallywretchedperiods inEnglishhistory.Theslowpassage ofthevariousReformBills,thedestructionoftheEnglishyeomanry,thenew citieswiththeirappallingfactoriesand slums,thenewaristocracybasedon old-clothes'dealersandsoapmerchants -theseweresomeoftheattendantfactorsofthebusinessrevivalafterthe NapoleonicWars.PleaseGod,wewill neverhaveanythinglikeitagainor wewillhavefoughtinvain.

Justatpresentamenjoyingashort leaveinCairo.Wehadabitofa crashafewdaysago,sotheC.O.told ustohaveaholiday.NotthatIneededit,butmycrewhaven'thadanyleaveforawhile,sowedecidedtotake it. Wehadbeenonanightraid,andreturnedtofindour'Dromeobscuredby agroundmistandcouldn'tseetheflare path.Whileflyingroundtryingtoget aleadintothe'Dromefromacertain pointonthecoast,weranoutofpetrol. Knowingthecountrywastooroughfor ablindlandingatnight,IpretendedI wasaseaplaneanddidacrashlanding intheMediterranean.Thiswasthe onlythingwecoulddo,asweweretoo lowtobaleoutandthingshappened fast.

Havinggentlykissedthewaves,we finallyscrambledouthalffullofsea waterandsoakedthrough,andfinally piledintoourdinghy.Ourgunnerhad hurthisleg,sotheobserverandIleft himinthedinghyandtriedtotowit ashore,butthewindandwaveswere sostrongwecouldn'tmakeit.Allthat wasleftwastogetintothedinghyagainandletherdrift.Thenextthree orfourhourswetossedonthewaves inthegeneraldirectionofGreece.If everIwantedmyprayerstobeansweredthenwasthetime.Miraculouslyenoughtheywere,forabout4a.m. thewindchangedandwetossedour waybacktoshore,andmadealanding at9a.m.,verycoldandwetandtired, butveryhappyandthankful.

Afterbumpingourwayovervarious reefsandscramblingoverrocks,we foundapartyofArabs,wholitafire andfedus.Nextwemountedcamels androdetothenearestCoastguardStation.Soendedourlittleexperience, whichImightmentionwasthecoldest andmostmiserablenightIeverwishto spend.However,it'sallpartofthe game,andweallgotoutofitsafely, andwe'llbebackatworkinnotime. Mylittlesachetthatyougaveme, mother,alwaysflieswithme,andsure savedmethattime.

Well,Cairoisstillafrowsyplace withallitsscreamingwogs,andthe soonerIgetbacktotheDesertthebetterI'llbepleased.IonlywishIcould getbacktoAustralia,forIsupposeyou willsoonbehavingyourownprivate waroutthere,andwe'llbeleftoutofit. Oneneverknows-wemaystanda chanceofbeingsentbackhome.All sortsofsurprisingthingshappenwhen leastexpected.IbelievetheNorthWesttownsaregettingsomeattention fromtheJaps.Stilltheyhavealong waytogotoreachPerth.

Well,mustfinishoffthisletterand havesomelunch.Amfeelingwell, andhopeyouareallthesame.Cheerio, andgivemyregardstotheWalshies andBriggs.

ThemonthlymeetingoftheCatholic WomensLeaguetookplaceonMondayeveninglast.Owingtowintry weatherconditions,attendancewasnot solargeasusual.Afterthemeeting asocialsupperwasheldandtheproceedsdevotedto.theFoundlingHome. TheChaplain,Rev.FatherMcCarthy, attendedandwasluckyenoughtohold thewinningticket.

Therewasagoodattendanceatthe monthlyCommunionoftheSacred HeartSodalitymembers.Rev.Father Nolanconductedameetingintheevening,butattendancewaspoor,possibly onaccountoftheheavyrain.

"Itisyourprivilegetobepowerfulagentsanddecisivefactors inthemightyprocessofre-adjustmentandre-construction."

HisGracetheArchbishopsaiditwas hisfirstdutythatmorningtoexpress hisheartfeltgratitudetotheOblate Fathers,whohadbeenresponsiblefor arrangingthatmagnificentdemonstrationofFaith,andespeciallytoFather Breslin,thePortChaplain.Itwas duetotheOblateFathers,withthe efficientandgenerousco-operationof theCatholicWelfareOrganisationthat facilitieshadbeenprovidedtherefor theAlliedFightingServices.TheCatholicWelfareOrganisationhadborne thecostofrenovatingandequipping. anditwouldpayeachweekforthe maintenanceoftheDepotthatwas beingopenedthatmorning.Hethankedthemembersoftheexecutiveofthe C.W.O.fortheirsplendidorganisation. andcongratulatedthemmostcordially.Althoughhewasnotappealing forfundstodefraythecostsofthe Depot,continuedHisGrace,hedid appealformembersfortheCatholic Welfare!Organisation.Thepresent membershipof7,000wasnotaslarge asitmightbe.Nextmonth,anappealwouldbemadeineverychurch oftheArchdiocese,andforthesmall feeofIs.perannum,thosenotmemberswouldbeprivilegedtoseekenrolmentinanorganisationwhichwas doingsuchsplendidworkandofwhich Catholicsweresojustlyproud.

Indeclaringopenthatsplendidand well-equippedDepot,HisGracewished thatimmensesocialbenefits,andconductedasitwasunderproperanddignifiedsupervision,thatimmensespiritualbenefitswouldbederivedbythe membersoftheArmedForcespatronisingit.

FaithSuppliesforHomeLife.

TheyhadbeenprivilegedthatmorningtowitnessamagnificentdemonstrationofFaith,loyalty,anddevotion.He congratulatedthemenoftheForces ontheprivilegetheyhadavailed themselvesof,ofdemonstratingtheir CatholicFaith.Theyhadgivensolid evidencethatitwaspossibletogive toCaesarthethingsthatwereCaesar's withoutdenyingtoGodthethings thatwereGod's.Thiswarhaddraggedthemawayfromtheirhomesand families-fromhomejoys,hometies, andhomesanctity,fromtheholyinfluenceandthechasterestraintwith whichwell-regulatedhomelifehadsurroundedthem.Butinthemeasure humanaidsweredeniedthem,inthat samemeasuretheyshouldseekand clingtotheDivinehelp.

ThepracticeoftheFaithwouldsustainandstrengthentheminthestruggleinwhichtheywereactivelyengagedto-day,Chaplainshadbeenprovidedtohelptheminthepracticeofthe Faith.Theywouldgowiththeirmen andsharetheirhardships.Thisthey haddoneandwouldcontinuetodo. Manyhaddiedbringingtheconsolationsofreligiontotheirmen,andthey wouldcontinuetopaythesupreme sacrificewhenitwasnecessary.The blessingoftheChurchwouldaccompanythemwherevertheymightbe calledupontodotheirduty.Her prayersandpleadingswouldhewith themindeathifitwastheirhappy lottogivetheirlivesfortheircountry. "KeepthechargeoftheLordthy God,"continuedHisGrace,"towalk inHisways,toclaseiveFILprecepts;

takethoucourageandshowthyselfa man."Thesewords,spokenbyHoly Davidtohisson,Solomon,hespoke tothemthatdayastheirspiritual lather.Heurgedthemtobetrueto Godandtotheirconsciences.That theywouldbebraveandcourageous, physicallyandmilitarily,hehadno doubt.Butcouragewasnotlimited tophysicalbravery.Theyshouldnot forgetthemoralcouragethatwasdemandedofthemasCatholicmen.For theyhadnotonlytheircountry'sfreedomtodefend,buttheyhadalsoits honourtoupholdandmaintain

War'sLicence, TheArchbishopurgedthemtobewareofwar'slicence,ofthosevicesthe growthandindulgenceofwhichwould soontearoutoftheirheartsevery nobleinstinct,sullythefairnameof theircountry,anddragthemdown tothelevelofthosewhosedeedsof lustandremorselesssavageryhad alienatedandchilledthesympathiesof millionsthroughoutthecivilisedworld.

NewshasbeenreceivedfromMelbourneUniversitythatMissMargery Owens,ofSubiaco,hastakenherdegreeasaDoctor,obtainingfirst-class honoursinSurgeryandMedicine.At thefinalexaminationshewasheadof theW.A.studentsattendingtheUniversity.Dr.Owenswaseducatedby theSistersofMercyatJolimontand VictoriaSquare,andlateratLoreto, andcompletedherstudiesinW.A.at theAlbanyHighSchool,whereher uncle,thelateMr.FrancisReedywas headmaster.Dr.Owenswillprobably remaininMelbournefor12monthsas housesurgeonatSt.Vincent'sHospital.

Ingredients:

2cupsboilingwater, cupsugar, teaspoonsalt, 5tablespoonscornstarch, 4cupcoldwater, 2eggwhites, Icuplemonjuice.

Method:

Addsugarandsalttoboilingwater, dilutecornstarchwithcoldwater,and combinemixtures.Bringtoboiling point,stirringconstantly,andboil fiveminutes.Coolslightly,addstiffly beateneggwhitesandlemonjuice. Turnintomould,firstdippedincold water,andchill.Servewithsoftcustardorwhippedcream.

TheCatholiccriticismofBolshevismhasneverbeenthatit wouldnotwork,butthatitwasmorallywronginprincipleasin practice.IfBolshevismhadconfineditselftoeconomicandpoliticaladjustmentsandallowedfreedomofthoughtandrealeducation,itwouldnothaveworked,manbeingasheis.Butonceit seizedthecontroloftheschools,thehomesandthechannelsof publiccommunication,andturnedtheseintomeretoolsofpropaganda.theidealbecomerealisable.Ithasbeen,inpointoffact. possibletowarpthenatureofman-atleastsufficientlyforitspurposes.Itisconceivablethataftersomegenerations,Bolshevism mightraiselivingstandardstoarespectablelevel.Theymight haveplentyofbreadandvodka,ultra-refinedflats,reallyartistic andsatisfyingpropagandistart,andinfinitelysuperiorsocialservices.ButtheBolshevistsystemwouldstillbethesystemofthe hiveandtheant-hill.Itisasystemofsub-menwherethelifeis themeatandthebodytheraiment.Itsuppliesalltheeconomic necessitiesofman-quiteunnecessarilybecauseitisnotdealing withmen.Howeverallthismightworkoutinspeculationabout thefuture,thestarkfactremainsthatthedenialofpropertyis houndupwiththedenialalikeofGodandofthespiritofmanin Whoseimagemanismade.

Thecaseisalikewithourownaffairs.Itwouldseemthat thepresentGovernmentofAustraliaismoredeterminedthanmany ofitspredecessorstoguardtheeconomicwelfareofitspeople. Soldiers'payhasincreased,pensionshaveimproved,andahostof publicservicesisenvisaged.ButthebasicstructureofAustralianeconomiclifeisunchanged.Wearetoremainaproletariat, withtheslightvariationthattheinadequacyofthewagesystemis tobebolsteredupwithState"charity."Itmaybethatpeacewill bringwithitprosperity,butifthenationalstructureremainsasit :s.itwillnotbringfreedom.Catholicsarecommittedtobetter theconditionsoftheworkerwiththeideathatahigherwagesystemwillenablehimtoachieverealsecuritythroughtheownership,personalandcorporate,ofproperty.Butitisdeadlyclear thattheverymeansmaydefeattheend.Unlessthespiritual notionoffreedomisaroused,increasedincomemayonlymeanincreasedirresponsibility,morewine,womenandhorses.Thesame dangerattendsincreasedsocialservices."ForFreedom,"quotingMr.Dawson,quitejustlyremarked:"ItmaybehardertoresistatotalitarianStatewhichreliesonfreemilkandbirth-control clinicsthanonewhichreliesoncastor-oilandconcentrationcamps." "CruwningDay'at Brigids,West Perth,wasattended - withthepompand splendourthathavebecomeanintegralpartofthecelebrations. Fromitsveryinception,theparish ofSt.Brigid'shasmadetheglories ofMary,forthemonthofMay,adistinctivepartofparochialdevotion,and itisduetothefosteringandtender nurtureoftheseedsowellplantedby pioneerpriestsandnunsthatwehave to-day,astheculminationofoutward .expressionsoffealtyandlovetowards ourMotherMary,thebeautiful,simpleandexpressivefunctionofthe "CrowningoftheQueenoftheMay." Thecustomharkenshackthrough centuriesoftimetotheCatholiccountriesofEurope,whendevotiontothe MotherofGodwasshownbywayside chapelandwaysideshrine,wherethe simplepeasantspaidpoverty'stribute toMary,astheyculledfromthewoodlandagarlandofforestflowersand placeditonthebrowofMadonnadella Strada.Thecustomwasapopularonein England,whenthetitle,"DosMariae" -Mary'sDowry-wasthatcountry's proudboast,butwiththeso-calledReformationachillingfrostsetinthat stifledeveryCatholicgrowthofoutwardreligiousexpression:HenryVIII. substitutedthedanceofthe"Maypole"fortheformerceremony,anda childbecametherecipientofthefragile crown,insteadofMary,ourMother. Thewell-knownlinesofTennyson's "MayQueen"showhowthetitleof "MaryQueen"filteredthroughvarying stages.Hesays:

LastMay,wemadeacrownofflowers, wehadamerryday, Beneaththehawthornonthegreen, theymademeQueenofMay. Andwedancedaroundthemay-pole andinthehazelcopse, TillCharles'sWaincameoutabovethe tallwhitechimneytops. Inspiteofthetyrant'sdestroying hand,OurLadyisfastcomingback toherownagain,andherstatueis oncemoreadornedbythesimplegarlandthatcalledforthsomuchloving devotioninthedaysofyore.Where theceremonyloomslargeinparochial interests,lengthypreparationsare madefortheevent.Eventhepoorestfindwaysandmeanstosecurenew, whitefrocksthatwillenablethemto takepartinthepublicprocessionsfor theoccasion,andinthemoreremote villagespenniesaredonatedbythe veriestpoortobuycandlestoplace inpractisedorderatthefootofthe statue.Itmaybementionedinpassingthattheplacingofdecoratedcandlesinmassivebrasscandelebraeis devotionallydonebytheChildrenof MaryofSt.Brigid's.Godgrantthat withdeeperdevotionmaycomeamore widespreadparticipationinthesesimpleactsofhomagetoHer,whoisnow, morethanever,ourLife,ourSweetnessandourHope.

Theceremonyiswellcalculated,by itstouchingsimplicity,tostirthe heart,andsounddepthsofemotion thatotherspiritualfathom-linesmay failtoreach.Owingtoprevailingwar precautions,thedevotionswerecarried outintheafternoon,buttheinterior ofthesacrededificewaswrappedin sufficientumbragetolendanadded charmtoaltarandsanctuarydecorations,andtothecostlyrobingofthose favouredtodischargeimportantroles.

Thepreacherfortheoccasionwas Rev.FatherKelliher.Attheconclusionofhiseloquentdiscourseonthe prerogativesofChrist'sMother,theprocession,composedentirelyoflittleones, enteredthechurch.TheQueenRegentforthisyearwasJusteria,the seven-year-olddaughterofMr.andMrs. J.O'Meara,ofWestPerth.Shewas richlyadornedinglacesilk,withmagnificentsatintrain,inlaidwithantique lace:aveilgorgeouslyembroidered, andattachedtoacoronetofpearls, completedtheregaloutfit-alldonein spotlesswhite,withbutonesimple touchofblueonthedressfront. Sheenteredthechurch,whichwas crowdedtoitsutmostcapacity,with thatpassingdignityandlovelinessthat findtheirtruesettingintherealmof childhood.Beautyoffaceandaheart ofgracewerethetwopotentfactors thatexercisedadeep,synchronisedinfluenceoneverymemberofthat crowdedcongregation.Downnave andaisleshemoved,majesticamong heryouthfulattendants-heralds,courtiers,maids-in-waiting,andDowagerof Queens,whothisyearwereanoveland strikingfeatureofthesuite-PhilomenaDans,onlydaughterofMr.and Mrs.A.Dans:ElaineBoucher,eldest daughterofMr.andMrs.Geo.Boucher; BarbaraMetcalf,eldestdaughterof CaptainC.F.andMrs.Metcalf.

TothestrainsofsweetsingingrenderedbythemembersoftheChildrenofMary'sSodality,thisfavoured childmountedaflower-deckedladder andstoodwithtinyhandsfirstjoined inreverentprayer,thentakingthe crownshehelditinreadinesstoplace ontheheadofthelife-sizedstatue,emboweredwithroses.Thesefewmomentswereclimaxoftheceremony. Feweyeswerenottear-dimmedwhile gazingonthepicturethuspresentedof theembodimentofinnocentloveliness dwellinginthesoulofoneofGod's littleones. Thecrowningwasaccomplishedwith muchdevotion,andtheyoungqueen waitedforthefadingawayofthedulcetstrainsofmelody,themostintangibleformofworshipusedintheChurch, beforeshebeganthedescentfromthe floralsteps.

AccompaniedbytheDowagerQueen oflastyear,BarbaraMetcalf,shewalkedinprocessiontotheSanctuary gates,andkneltfortheSolemnBenedictionthatwasgivenbyFather O'Kane,assistedbyVeryRev.Rather Reidy,whowaspresentintheSanctuaryduringthewholeoftheceremony, withFatherKelliherasDeacon.

Thewholecongregation,inwhichrepresentativesofthefightingforcesof AmericaandAustraliawererepresentedbymembersofland,seaandair units,joinedintheoldhymnthatis evernew,"HailQueenofHeaven."The queenandpartymovedonceagain downthenaveandthusmadeanall too-speedyendtowhathadproveda spiritualdelighttosolargeaconcourse.

Anewchapterinthehistoryofthe ReligiousOrderswasopenedonSundayafternoonlast,whenthefirstfoun dationofDominicanNunsintheArchdiocesewasmadebytheopeningof theirnewConventinBedfordPark byHisGracetheArchbishop.Despite thedifficulttimesandthelackofpublicity.averygoodattendancemarked theceteincny.ManyofthemetropolitanPriestsandBrotherswerepresent, aswellasrepresentativesoftheJesuit, RedemptoristandOblateCommunities.

Byasingularcoincidence,theday correspondedwiththefoundationof thefirstDominicanfoundationinthis State(intheGreenoughdistrict,Geraldtondiocese,43yearsago). WithHisGraceontheplatform weretheRev.FatherHenebry(locum tenensoftheparish!,VeryRev.Father

"1bepeoplewouldbesurprisedto learnthatitwasbecomingincreasingly difficulttostaffthelocalschools.Girls werenotofferingthemselvesaspostulantstobetrainedinthereligiouslife. Uptotheoutbreakofwar,largenumbersofIrishgirlshadcometoAustraliatobetrainedasteachers.Butthat supplylinewasnowcut.Whenthe questionofstaffingtheBedfordPark Schoolarose,hehadbeenobligedto gooutsidetheDiocese.TheDominican Sistershadgivenastaff,andagood staff,andhewasgratefultothem.He feltconfidentthattheSisterswould neverregrettheirdecision. WelcometoHisGrace, FatherHenebrysaiditwashis pleasanttasktowelcometheArchbishoponbehalfoftheSistersandthe parishioners.Thatdaymarkedanother stepforwardinthedevelopmentofthe parish.TheSistershadcometostay, andsincetheircomingtheschoolhad progressedinaremarkableway.They hadhadtosufferprivations,difficulties, andobstaclesofallkinds.Butthey weretruepioneers,andbytheirindomitablespiritandheroicself-sacrifice theyhadfacedtheirdifficulttasksuccessfully.Theschoolhadhadhumble origins,butithadgrownuntilto-day theyhadthelargenumberof90childrenenrolled.TheSisterswouldstill havedifficultiestofacebutwiththe helpandco-operationoftheparishionersthesewouldbesuccessfullyovercome.

HISGRACE'SADDRESS.

HisGracetheArchbishopsaidithad beendecidedforobviousreasonsnotto giveanypublicitytothatday'sfunction.Becauseofthedifficulttimes throughwhichwewerepassing,besides theBedfordParkparishionersandthe personalfriendsoftheSisters,veryfew wereawareofit.Judgingfromthe attendancethatdaytheSistersmust havemanyfriends.HisGracethankedthemfortheirpresenceandtheir patronage,andforthehelptheyhad given,weregiving,andwouldcontinue togive.

ReputationasTeachers. TheDominicanSistershadcometo thisStatefromNewZealand.Bya happycoincidence,to-daywasthe43rd. anniversaryoftheirestablishmentin theGeraldtonDiocese.Eversince, inDongarraandtheirbranchhouses, theSistershadbeensuccessfulinestablishinganenviablereputationfor efficiencyintheirworkofCatholiceducation.TheyhadcometoBedford ParkinFebruaryathisinvitation,to supplementtheactivitiesofthevarious otherteachingOrderswhichweredoing suchremarkablework.TheSistershad hadmanydifficulties,buthadsurmountedthemallandweredoingsplendidwork.

manyhousessurroundingthesite. Whenthewarwasover,hehadno doubtthedistrictwoulddeveloprapidly.

NoteworthyProgress.

TheSistershadfacedtheirdifficulties withcharacteristiccourageandfortitude.Seventeenmonthsago,their schoolenrolmentwas25;to-dayitwas 90.Itwouldhavebeenwellover100 butforevacuationandwarcinditions generally.Thesuccessofthepast17 monthsgavepromisethatitwould beabigschool.Hehadnoapprehensionregardingthesuccessofthefoundationintheyearstocome.His GracerecalledhowtheSistershadcommencedina4-roomedhouse.Their newhomewascommodiousandwellequipped.Itwasfortunatetheyhad beenabletocompletethebuildingbeforethenew,drasticbuildingrestrictionshadcomeintooperation.

CatholicEducationMustGoOn.

HisGracecongratulatedtheSisters ontakingovertheirnewhome,andap- pealedtothepeopletohelpthemasfar astheirfinancialmeanswouldallow. Heknewthereweremanycallsupon themforpatrioticcauses,andthatthey gavegladlyandwillinglytothese.But theworkofCatholicEducationmustgo on.Ifthepost-warNewOrdermeant anything,itmustmeanthatChristian Educationgottheplacethathadbeen denieditsolongandsoshamefully. ItwouldbeathousandpitiesifCatholiceducationwerecompelledtotakea retrogressivestep.Catholicswould continuetodotheirdutytotheState ascitizens,buttheyhadalsoadutyto theChurchinmaintainingthemagnificentsystemofCatholiceducation.

ForesightVindicated.

HisGracethankedFatherHenebry forhishelpinimprovingthegrounds oftheschool.Itwasabeautifulbuilding.andwasworthyofabeautiful setting.Ithadcost£1,950tobuild, andtheywereluckytohavebuiltit whentheydid.Somehadsaiditwas beforeitstime.This,theArchbishop emphaticallydenied,Theywouldnot havebeenabletobuilditnow,andeven, iftheyhad,itwouldnowhavecostbetweentwo-and-a-halfandthreethousand,rounds.Thenumberofchildren nowittheschoolhadjustifiedtheir decisiontobuildwhentheydid.

FriendsoftheSisters, ReferringtothenewConvent,His Gracesaiditwasabeautifulbuilding, worthyofthesiteandofthewomen whowouldliveinit.Hethanked thearchitects,Messrs.Bonnerand Treacy,forthebeautifuldesign.He thankedalsoMr.McDonnell,whohad beensupervisoraswellascontractor; forthearchitectshadbeencalledupfor militaryserviceandhadnotbeenable tosupervisethework.Mr.McDonnell haddonehisworkthoroughlyandconscientiously,andHisGracethankedhim publiclyandcordiallyforwhathehad donedespiteashortageofeverything. TheArchbishopalsothankedthememberforthedistrict,Mr,J.Heagney, andthemembersofthePerthRoads Board,forfindingtimetopatronisethe function.TheyhadgivenhelpandencouragementtotheSistersandwould dosointhefuture.HisGracehopedthat itmightsoonbepossibletohavethe roadextendedtothefrontoftheConvent.AlthoughtheChurchproperty wasnotrateable,theparentsofthe childrenintheSchoolwereallratepayers,andtheConventwasonlyan adjunctoftheSchooltoaccommodate theteachers.

HewasgratefultoFatherGallagher forrepresentingtheDiocesefromwhich thatday'sfoundationhadbeenmade. HecongratulatedtheSisters,and thankedthemfortheirgreatwork.He askedGod'sblessingonthemandthe littlechildrencommittedtotheircare.

Shewasthelastsurvivingmember oftheSchreenanfamily,ofBallarai, fromwhenceshecametoWestAustra. liaover40yearsago.SettlinginMidlandJunction,shetherespentthebest partofherlife.Althoughwelloccupiedindevotiontoherfamily,she foundtimetomakealargecircleof friends,bywhomshewilleverberememberedasafriendindeed.Her greatfaithanduntiringeffortsatall timesonbehalfofanythingconnected withtheChurchweremostedifying.

Thefortitudewithwhichshe,nearthe end,borehersufferingsendearedher stillmoretohermanyfriends.The end,thoughnotunexpected,cameasa greatshocktohersorrowinghusband andfamily.

Thiswassomethingexceptionalinthe modernworldandcalledforexceptional co-operation.

HewaspleasedtheSistersatlasthad anewhome,andthepeopleofthedistrictwerepleased.Hehopedtheir numberswouldincreaseandgrow.He movedaheartyvoteofthankstothe Archbishop Mr.Gibney.

MrGibney,ofthePerthRoad Board,saidheandhiscolleaguewere pleasedtobepresent.Heapologised fortheabsenceofMr.Abbott,the ChairmanofthePerthRoadBoard whohadintendedtobepresent.He congratulatedtheSistersontheeffort theyhadputfbrwardinthedistrictand fortheirconfidenceinInglewood.The districtwouldhavegoneaheadmore butforthetroublesometimes.The BoardintendedtoextendWood-roadas
