AfterMass,themenproceededto theDepot,whichwasformerlythe parishhall,buthasbeenhandedoverto theC.W.O.forthedurationofthewar byVeryRev.FatherT.Haugh,0.111.1., asarecreationalcentreforAlliedServicemen.Hereadaintybreakfast wasservedbytheFremantleLadies' AuxiliaryoftheC.W.O.
DuringthebreakfastthechoirofSt. Joseph'sConventpresentedsomechoral numbers.Thestagehadanautical setting,andchildrenfromthePrimarySchoolweredressedbytheSisters torepresentUncleSam,Brittania,Air Force,Navy,Army,NursingSisters, andRedCross.Thesesangasong ofwelcomeinhonourofHisGrace,"Advance,AustraliaFair,""TheAussies andtheYanksAreHere"(asongcomposedbyanAmericansoldierinAustralia),and"It'saGreatDayforthe Irish," Afterbreakfast,aseriesofphotographsweretakenofHisGraceand themen,whogavethreecheersforthe ArchbishopandfortheCatholicWelfareOrganisation. theState.Domesticsocietyis,there fore,priortocivilsocietybothin natureandintime.Therightsofthe familyarenot,therefore,derivedfrom theState,norhastheStatetheright tocontroldomesticlife.Ithasthe righttocheckabuseswhichcouldbe destructiveofthecommongood.But itcannotinterferewiththepositiveadministrationofthenormalhome.The Statedidnotgivebirthtothechildren.Theparentsdid.Theparents,therefore,havetherightandthe dutytobringuptheirchildren,fosteringandpreservingthelivesforwhich theyareresponsible,andseeingto theirspiritual,intellectual,andphysicaldevelopment.Theeducationof childrenbelongs,therefore,totheparents,andnottotheState.Thepar-
entsmayentrusttheeducationoftheir childrentoothers;buttheseothers haveonlyadelegatedrightinsucha case.Therightalwaysremainsthat oftheparents.TheState,ofcourse. hastherighttodemandacertainstandardofproficiencyinsecularsubjects; butithasnottherighttosayhowor wherethechildwillbebroughttothat standard.Thatbelongstotheparents.Inconclusion,itmustbesaid thatthefamilyisthemostancientand necessaryofallformsofsociety,havingitsimmediateorigininthenatural lawitself,andderivingitsrightsfrom nootherandsubsequenttypesofsociety.

SimilarlyAmericanCatholiccontemporariesreportthattheU.S.Governmenthasgrantedapriorityinrubber tobeusedintheproductionof"prophylacticdevices."Whatevertheintentionsofpoliticiansandmilitaryleadersinthesematters,thefactremainsthatsuchactionswillleadtothe growthofcommercialisedvice.The hatefulpracticeofmakingcontraceptivesavailableinmilitarycampscontinuesandhelpsontheprocessofnationaldecay,Thecommonassumptionamongarmychiefsseemstobe
thatforamaninuniform,liquorand womenareaphysicalnecessity.Under presentconditions,themilitaryofficials donot,itistrue,advocatesexualpromiscuity.Buttheregulationscondone it,providednodiseasefollows.The realhorrorofthenastybusinessisnot thatphysicaldiseasemaycome,but thatmenandwomenareshamedand inthemtheimageofGodisdesecrated. Furthermore,thedefeatistattitudeto chastitysapsthefoundationsofthe wholemoralstructure.Toplantin themindsofthousandsofyoungsoldiers(forthemostpartlackinginelementaryChristianinstruction)thatthe Government'ssoleobjectiontosexual promiscuityisthedreadofdisease, mustinculcateacompletelycynicaldisregardofmorals,ashamelessattitude tothedignityofwoman,andatotal lackofself-respect.Theattemptto representsexualviceasinevitable isadiscreditedtheoryofmaterialism. Itisaflagrantdenialofthepowerof free-willandtheefficacyoftheGrace ofGod.Betterrecreationalfacilities arewantedinsteadofprophylacticdevices.Inanycase,condonedimmoralitycanhenoaidtoarmymorale.

InthissenseAmericahasbeenthe super-capitalistState,andwhenaresponsibleAmericantalksof"arevival oftheCapitalisticsystem,"onewonders whatmorecanbedonefortherichand whatmoreitiscontemplatedcanbe takenfromthepoor.Capitalistsocietiesarenowoverwhelminglyproletarian.Theprocessonlyneedsstabilisation, andthat,itseems,canbebesteffected byStateCapitalismbasedonforcedlabour.InitseffectsStateCapitalism willbeindistinguishablefromSocialism.Therightsoftheworkerofbarteringandofassociationwillhaveto goover-boardforthecontinuanceof classstrugglewoulddefeattheprimary endofpresentsocialtrends,whichis tostabilisetheCapitalisticsystem. Thiscanbestbedone,andindeedcan onlybedone,byremovingfirstlythe moralcontradictionsofsociety(as,for example,thelegalfictionoftheprotectionofproperty),and,secondly, theactualelementsofconflict,namely, tradeunionsandtherighttostrike.
Thestageisideallyseteverywhere forsuchacoup.Mr.Menzies,when PrimeMinister,seemedtoenvisagea NewOrderbasedontheretentionof war-time"controls."Henceitwas hearteningtoreadintherecentSocial JusticeStatement-"ForFreedom"thattheCatholicChurchinthiscountry isveryalivetotherealityofthedangersinvolvedinthis"totalwar"legislation.Henceitwarnedthat"intime ofwar,theseedsofdictatorshipare sownmoreeasilythanatanyother." Whileitisrecognisedthatthese"controls"maybenecessaryinthevastmajorityofcases,thereremainsthefear thatthey"maycometobeusedasa modelintimeofpeace andmay beaseffectiveaspaganCommunismor Nazismindestroyingthefreedomwhich theindividualandthefamilyshould rightlyenjoy."Furtheritisinsisted thatthesurrenderofourlibertiesis voluntary(unlessourdemocratic vauntsbeutterlyhollow),and,second. 1y,thatitistemporary.Howeverthat beviewedinAustralia,itiscertainthat someU.S.leadershavequiteother ideas.
Itseemedtomeespeciallyinfelicitous thatMr.Arnoldshouldhaveviewedthe futureoptimisticallyonthegrounds: lathattherewouldbeabusinessrevival,and(b),thatitwouldbeona scaleunnequalledsincetheNapoleonic Wars.Inthefirstplacethereisnaturallyandinevitablyabusinessrevival forthevictorsinwar.Thewinning nationverygenerouslyhelpsthevanquishedtoobtainfood,torebuilddevastatedareas,andeventore-arm. Someprominentfiguresonbothsides oramong.neutralsdonotneedabusinessrevival,forwaristheirbusiness, andsotheyassistintheimmediaterearmingofthevanquishedinanticipationofanewandproximatestruggle
ButMr.Arnoldfailedtoaddthatthe businessrevivalisinevitablyfollowed byahideousslump,thevanquished nationhavinggotonitsfeet.(Unless, ofcourse,intheNewOrder,itwillbe possibleforthevictorstocollareverythingandhavethevanquishedineternaleconomicsubjugation.)

Justatpresentamenjoyingashort leaveinCairo.Wehadabitofa crashafewdaysago,sotheC.O.told ustohaveaholiday.NotthatIneededit,butmycrewhaven'thadanyleaveforawhile,sowedecidedtotake it. Wehadbeenonanightraid,andreturnedtofindour'Dromeobscuredby agroundmistandcouldn'tseetheflare path.Whileflyingroundtryingtoget aleadintothe'Dromefromacertain pointonthecoast,weranoutofpetrol. Knowingthecountrywastooroughfor ablindlandingatnight,IpretendedI wasaseaplaneanddidacrashlanding intheMediterranean.Thiswasthe onlythingwecoulddo,asweweretoo lowtobaleoutandthingshappened fast.
Havinggentlykissedthewaves,we finallyscrambledouthalffullofsea waterandsoakedthrough,andfinally piledintoourdinghy.Ourgunnerhad hurthisleg,sotheobserverandIleft himinthedinghyandtriedtotowit ashore,butthewindandwaveswere sostrongwecouldn'tmakeit.Allthat wasleftwastogetintothedinghyagainandletherdrift.Thenextthree orfourhourswetossedonthewaves inthegeneraldirectionofGreece.If everIwantedmyprayerstobeansweredthenwasthetime.Miraculouslyenoughtheywere,forabout4a.m. thewindchangedandwetossedour waybacktoshore,andmadealanding at9a.m.,verycoldandwetandtired, butveryhappyandthankful.
Afterbumpingourwayovervarious reefsandscramblingoverrocks,we foundapartyofArabs,wholitafire andfedus.Nextwemountedcamels androdetothenearestCoastguardStation.Soendedourlittleexperience, whichImightmentionwasthecoldest andmostmiserablenightIeverwishto spend.However,it'sallpartofthe game,andweallgotoutofitsafely, andwe'llbebackatworkinnotime. Mylittlesachetthatyougaveme, mother,alwaysflieswithme,andsure savedmethattime.
Well,Cairoisstillafrowsyplace withallitsscreamingwogs,andthe soonerIgetbacktotheDesertthebetterI'llbepleased.IonlywishIcould getbacktoAustralia,forIsupposeyou willsoonbehavingyourownprivate waroutthere,andwe'llbeleftoutofit. Fromitsveryinception,theparish ofSt.Brigid'shasmadetheglories ofMary,forthemonthofMay,adistinctivepartofparochialdevotion,and itisduetothefosteringandtender nurtureoftheseedsowellplantedby pioneerpriestsandnunsthatwehave to-day,astheculminationofoutward .expressionsoffealtyandlovetowards ourMotherMary,thebeautiful,simpleandexpressivefunctionofthe "CrowningoftheQueenoftheMay." Thepreacherfortheoccasionwas Rev.FatherKelliher.Attheconclusionofhiseloquentdiscourseonthe prerogativesofChrist'sMother,theprocession,composedentirelyoflittleones, enteredthechurch.TheQueenRegentforthisyearwasJusteria,the seven-year-olddaughterofMr.andMrs. J.O'Meara,ofWestPerth.Shewas richlyadornedinglacesilk,withmagnificentsatintrain,inlaidwithantique lace:aveilgorgeouslyembroidered, andattachedtoacoronetofpearls, completedtheregaloutfit-alldonein spotlesswhite,withbutonesimple touchofblueonthedressfront. Sheenteredthechurch,whichwas crowdedtoitsutmostcapacity,with thatpassingdignityandlovelinessthat findtheirtruesettingintherealmof childhood.Beautyoffaceandaheart ofgracewerethetwopotentfactors thatexercisedadeep,synchronisedinfluenceoneverymemberofthat crowdedcongregation.Downnave andaisleshemoved,majesticamong heryouthfulattendants-heralds,courtiers,maids-in-waiting,andDowagerof Queens,whothisyearwereanoveland strikingfeatureofthesuite-PhilomenaDans,onlydaughterofMr.and Mrs.A.Dans:ElaineBoucher,eldest daughterofMr.andMrs.Geo.Boucher; BarbaraMetcalf,eldestdaughterof CaptainC.F.andMrs.Metcalf.
TothestrainsofsweetsingingrenderedbythemembersoftheChildrenofMary'sSodality,thisfavoured childmountedaflower-deckedladder andstoodwithtinyhandsfirstjoined inreverentprayer,thentakingthe crownshehelditinreadinesstoplace ontheheadofthelife-sizedstatue,emboweredwithroses.Thesefewmomentswereclimaxoftheceremony. Feweyeswerenottear-dimmedwhile gazingonthepicturethuspresentedof theembodimentofinnocentloveliness dwellinginthesoulofoneofGod's littleones. Thecrowningwasaccomplishedwith muchdevotion,andtheyoungqueen waitedforthefadingawayofthedulcetstrainsofmelody,themostintangibleformofworshipusedintheChurch, beforeshebeganthedescentfromthe floralsteps.
AccompaniedbytheDowagerQueen oflastyear,BarbaraMetcalf,shewalkedinprocessiontotheSanctuary gates,andkneltfortheSolemnBenedictionthatwasgivenbyFather O'Kane,assistedbyVeryRev.Rather Reidy,whowaspresentintheSanctuaryduringthewholeoftheceremony, withFatherKelliherasDeacon.

HisGracetheArchbishopsaidithad beendecidedforobviousreasonsnotto giveanypublicitytothatday'sfunction.Becauseofthedifficulttimes throughwhichwewerepassing,besides theBedfordParkparishionersandthe personalfriendsoftheSisters,veryfew wereawareofit.Judgingfromthe attendancethatdaytheSistersmust havemanyfriends.HisGracethankedthemfortheirpresenceandtheir patronage,andforthehelptheyhad given,weregiving,andwouldcontinue togive.
ReputationasTeachers. Heknewthereweremanycallsupon themforpatrioticcauses,andthatthey gavegladlyandwillinglytothese.But theworkofCatholicEducationmustgo on.Ifthepost-warNewOrdermeant anything,itmustmeanthatChristian Educationgottheplacethathadbeen denieditsolongandsoshamefully. ItwouldbeathousandpitiesifCatholiceducationwerecompelledtotakea retrogressivestep.Catholicswould continuetodotheirdutytotheState ascitizens,buttheyhadalsoadutyto theChurchinmaintainingthemagnificentsystemofCatholiceducation.

HisGracethankedFatherHenebry forhishelpinimprovingthegrounds oftheschool.Itwasabeautifulbuilding.andwasworthyofabeautiful setting.Ithadcost£1,950tobuild, andtheywereluckytohavebuiltit whentheydid.Somehadsaiditwas beforeitstime.This,theArchbishop emphaticallydenied,Theywouldnot havebeenabletobuilditnow,andeven, iftheyhad,itwouldnowhavecostbetweentwo-and-a-halfandthreethousand,rounds.Thenumberofchildren nowittheschoolhadjustifiedtheir decisiontobuildwhentheydid.
FriendsoftheSisters, ReferringtothenewConvent,His Gracesaiditwasabeautifulbuilding, worthyofthesiteandofthewomen whowouldliveinit.Hethanked thearchitects,Messrs.Bonnerand Treacy,forthebeautifuldesign.He thankedalsoMr.McDonnell,whohad beensupervisoraswellascontractor; forthearchitectshadbeencalledupfor militaryserviceandhadnotbeenable tosupervisethework.Mr.McDonnell haddonehisworkthoroughlyandconscientiously,andHisGracethankedhim publiclyandcordiallyforwhathehad donedespiteashortageofeverything. TheArchbishopalsothankedthememberforthedistrict,Mr,J.Heagney, andthemembersofthePerthRoads Board,forfindingtimetopatronisethe function.TheyhadgivenhelpandencouragementtotheSistersandwould dosointhefuture.HisGracehopedthat itmightsoonbepossibletohavethe roadextendedtothefrontoftheConvent.AlthoughtheChurchproperty wasnotrateable,theparentsofthe childrenintheSchoolwereallratepayers,andtheConventwasonlyan adjunctoftheSchooltoaccommodate theteachers.
HewasgratefultoFatherGallagher forrepresentingtheDiocesefromwhich thatday'sfoundationhadbeenmade. HecongratulatedtheSisters,and thankedthemfortheirgreatwork.He askedGod'sblessingonthemandthe littlechildrencommittedtotheircare.

VeryRev.FatherGallaghersaidit wasverypleasanttobetheretocongratulatetheDominicanSistersonthe erectionoftheirbeautifulConvent,It wasevenmoreincumbentonhimto congratulatetheparishonhavingthe ConventandtheSisters.TheDominicanSistershadbeenintheGeraldton Diocesefor43years.Theyhadgone outtothesmallminingtownsofthe Murchisondistricttosmallschoolswith fewchildren.Andtheyhadstayed there.TheyhadnoConventsuchas this.Theyhadlivedandtaughtin hessianenclosures.Ononeplacewas paintedup,"WecommunicatewithHobart."Theyhadnotconsideredanythingprovidedtherewerechildrento teach.Thesamespiritandcourage wouldkeepthemtheretoteachthe childrenforthesalvationoftheirsouls, andtomakethemgrandChristiancitizensofthecountry.PeoplewereinclinedtotaketheSistersforgranted, andinasensethiswasatributeto them.FatherGallagherrecalledthe honourpaidtotheVestalVirginsin paganRomeinliteratureandclassical art.ThepraiseoftheVirginswas sungnotsomuchbecauseoftheirvirginity,butbecauseoftheoriginality ofsuchathinginthosepagansurroundings.TheSisterswerenoVestalstendingtheflameatapaganaltar,but tendingtheflameofloveatthealtarof thechildren'shearts.Theywould makethemgoodchildren,holychildren. Thiswassomethingexceptionalinthe modernworldandcalledforexceptional co-operation.
Mr.Heagney, saiditwashispleasantdutytoextend acordialwelcometoHisGracethe Archbishop.Thatparishwaspartof thevastdistrictofMiddleSwan,which herepresented,andhehadseengreat progressmadesincehislastvisit.The influenceoftheDominicanSisters wouldbeallforthegood.Theywould impartcultureandrefinement,which wassoneededinthecommunityto-day tocombattheruthlessnessandbestialityprevalentinEuropeandinthe world.Thenewbuildingwouldstand asasentineloverthemetropolitanarea. Thedistrictwasgoingahead,andhe hadeveryconfidenceitwouldgoahead. HewaspleasedtheSistersatlasthad anewhome,andthepeopleofthedistrictwerepleased.Hehopedtheir numberswouldincreaseandgrow.He movedaheartyvoteofthankstothe Archbishop Mr.Gibney.
MrGibney,ofthePerthRoad Board,saidheandhiscolleaguewere pleasedtobepresent.Heapologised fortheabsenceofMr.Abbott,the ChairmanofthePerthRoadBoard whohadintendedtobepresent.He congratulatedtheSistersontheeffort theyhadputfbrwardinthedistrictand fortheirconfidenceinInglewood.The districtwouldhavegoneaheadmore butforthetroublesometimes.The BoardintendedtoextendWood-roadas
farasGovernment-roadassoonaspossibleApplause.)Hehopedthisterriblewarwouldsoonendandthatthe districtwouldbeabletocarryonits progress.

VeryRev.FatherHaugh,O.M,I.,congratulatedtheDominicansonthecompletionoftheirnewConventThey hadatraditionofsevencenturiesof workforGod.Peopleperhapsasked, "WhyopenaConvent?'Theanswer tothatwasthattheCatholicChurch notonlybelievedinenlighteningthe mindsofpupils,butintrainingthe willandheartandinformingstrong, reliablecharactersIttrainedtheyoung tobeguidedbyaclearconscience, strengthenedforthestruggleoflifein doingrightandresistingwrong.That wasthehighestidealandtheaimof Catholiceducation.TheCatholicschool wasthegreatestbulwarkforcivilisationagainstmaterialism.TheCatholicChurchcouldturnoutthebestcitizens,becauseagoodcitizenwasone pureinmorals,ofaclearconscience, andabletomasterhispassions.This requiredstrugleandsuper-strengthto succeed.TheChurchalonehadthe Sacraments-thosechannelsofgraceandunchangingprinciples.

TheChurchextolledcivildutyand patriotism.Catholicsoldiers,airmen, andsailorshadwonthelaurelsofthe brave,becausetheywentintobattle withclearconsciencesandrightintentions.TheyhadwonthehighesthonoursthatBritainandtheUnited Stateshadtogive.Inthedaysto comethehopeofthepeoplelayinrecognisingthevalueoftheCatholic Churchasasupra-nationalsociety,able tocreateaninternationalconscience, whichalonecouldcurbdictators.If thisexisted,therewouldbenoneed ofanAtlanticCharter.Theleaders ofeconomiclifedidnotwantjustice. Theyhadnotimeforoursystemof morals.Thisfactexplainedthebrutal attacksmadeinmanylandsuponthe Catholiceducationalsystem.
AContrast.
InAustraliaweweretreatedwithbenigntolerance,butonecouldonlysee withregret.theimmensesumsofmoney spentinequippingStateschools,while toourschoolswereleftthemerciful penniesofourownpeople.ThemajorityofStateschoolchildrendidnot gotoChurch.Theyhadnoreligious instruction,andwerewithoutevenelementaryreligiousknowledge.Thetext bookswerefulloferrorsconcerning scientificthoughtandhistory.Religionwaseitherscornedorsilenced.In consequencetherewasinAustraliaa lamentablelackofmoraldiscipline. Therewaslicenceonthestreetsandthe spectacleofyoungwomenthrowing themselvesatanythinginuniform.The Catholicschool,ontheotherhand,inculcatedreligiontogetherwithtruecitizenship.FatherHaughconcludedby appealingforfinancialassistancefor thegoodworkoftheSisters
