Itisnotapeaceatanypricefor whichwepray,norhastheHoly Fatheratanytimesuggestedthat ajustpeacewasnotworthfightingfor,anddyingfor.Clearly, too,hehasenunciatedthebasic principlesuponwhichanypeace agreementmustbebuilt,and untiltheyarefinallyacceptedby victorsandvanquishedalikethere willhenorealpeace,butonly anotherfutilearmistice.
Itisindeedsignificantthatin eachyearofthewartheHoly Fatherhaschosenthemonthof Mayforacrusadeofprayerfrom thesufferingranksofChristendom.Itisnolesssignificantthat heplaceshishopesforthefinal triumphoftruthandjusticein theomnipotentmediationofOur Lady.Forsurelyinthis,its darkesthour,humanitywillnot heleftunsuccouredbytheGodgivenMotherofmankind.
Witheveryconfidence,then,in theMotherofGodandmen,to whomourcountryandourArchdiocesearededicated,letusturn tohertobegforthiswar-racked worldthejustandChristian peaceforwhichthepeopleofall nationsdesire.

TheGospelsarefragmentaryaccounts,andwedonotknowallthat transpiredonthatoccasion.Buteven so,theactualtextisnotopposedin anywaytothehonourwegiveto Mary.SomeonepraisedMary.Christ replied,"Yearather,blessedarethey
dieted,"allgenerationsshallcallme blessed."Yetblessedaretheywho hearthewordofGodandkeepit!We CatholicscallMaryblessedindeed, whilstmanyProtestantssearchScriptureinthefondhopeofprovingsomethingtoherdiscredit!
Christcalledher,"Woman,"whenBe said,"Woman,beholdthySon." litthelanguageChristspoke,that wordwasatermofgreatrespect,howeverharshlyitmaysoundinourmodernEnglishlanguage.OurLord wouldhavebeenthelasttoslightHis mother,athingwedespiseinevery man;andaboveallinHislastand mosttenderwordstoher.Norarewe likelytopleaseHimbyseekingtodishonourher.
DidHenotsaytoheratthemarriage feastofCana,"Woman,whatisthat totheeandtoMe?" Hedid.ButmostcertainlyHeintendednoreproachtoMary.Heractionwasoneofpurecharitytoothers. Foreseeingthepossibledistressof others,sheaskedHimtorelievethem: andHewouldnotrebukesounselfish athought.NorwouldHespeakto herwithanytraceofdisrespect.Then, too,hadMaryaskedawrongthing, Christwouldnothavedoneit,nor wouldHehavesanctionedarequest 'Hehadtorebuke.AndMaryknew thatshehadnotbeenreprehended,or shewouldnothavetoldthewaiters todowhatherSonwouldtellthem. Shewouldhavedroppedthematter. WhypraytoMaryatall?
BecauseGodwillsthatweshouldel, so,andbecausesuchprayerstoher areoftheutmostvalue.Godoften willstogivecertain'favoursonlyon conditionthatwegotosomesecondaryagent.Sodomwas bespared throughtheintercessionofAbraham: Naaman,theleper,wastobecured onlythroughthewatersoftheJordan.NowMaryis,andmustever remain,themotherofChrist.Shestill hasamother'srightsandprivileges, andisabletoobtainforusmany graces.Butletusviewthingsreasonably.IfIdesiretopray,Ican certainlypraytoGoddirectly.Ye. wouldyoublamemeif,attimes,I weretoaskmyownearthlymothe toprayformealso?Sucharequest isreallyaprayertoherthatshemay intercedeformewithGod.Certainly, ifImettheMotherofChristonearth, Iwouldaskhertoprayforme,awl shewoulddosoAndinhermore perfectstatewithChristinheaven sheisnotlessabletohelpme. ButaprayertoGoddirectlymustbe moreefficaciousthanaprayerto Mary.
Notnecessarily.Itmightwellbe thatGodintendstohonourOurLady bygrantingthefavourIseekthrough herintercessioninaparticularway.In thatcasethegraceistobegiven throughherprovidedIhonourherby addressingmyselftoher.Again, everyprayertoMaryisinrealitythe askingofa'favourfromGodevenas themotherofChristisrequestedto askthesamefavouralso.Itisoften bettertoaskGodforafavourand tohavesomeoneelseprayingtoGod withoneforthesamefavour.Two prayersarebetterthanone.And aboveall,whentheotheronepraying isChrist'sownmother. GodlovesyoumorethanMaryloves you. Thatisso.ButHelovesMary morethanHelovesme.Andasshe ismorepleasingtoGodthanIam, Hewillhemorereadytograntherrequests. Itisunscripturaltoattributepower toMary. Catholicsfulfillthisobligationinthe highestpossiblemannerbyofferingthe HolySacrifice.
Thedisputearisesoutofthesecond partoftheCommandment,whichforbidsservileworkontheSabbath.Itis obviousthatthisisnotofsuchimport. anceasthedirectworshipofGod,and itseemsthatmereinactivityisnot apositiveendinitself.Itisunlikely thatGodwouldbeglorifiedbysuch negativemethods.Itappearsrather asameanstoanend.Maniscommandedtolayasidehisordinarybusinessroutine(oranysupplementaryfinancialaffairs-thathemayfulfillthe primarydutyofworshipwithafree, undistractedmindandundividedattention.Norisitimprobablethat GodintendedtheSabbathinasecondarywaytogivemanamuchneeded relaxationofmindandbody,whichis necessarybothforhisphysicaland spiritualwell-being,especiallyinthese neuroticdaysofwar.Itisexceedinglydubiouswhetherthiswouldbe gainedinidleness,especiallyasthe Scripturesaresoinsistentastoits dangers.
Inthelightoftheseconsiderations, theCatholicChurchhasneverprotestedagainsthealthyrecreationon Sundays.butratherencouragedit. ProvidedoneattendstothefundamentalreasonfortheSabbath'sexistence, thereisnoreasonformopingabout fortherestoftheday.Itmight,however,beofferedasacounsel,thatCatholicsshouldendthedayastheybeganit.byworshippingintheTemple ofGod.Innoaspectcansportbe classedasworkorservilework,unless ofcourse.inthesedaysofprofessionalism,thereismoneyconnectedwithit. HerlittleSoniswithher,andherlove forHimisconstantlymirroredinher face.Herhusbandisacarpenterby trade,andweseehimbusyathis work.Itisnotatradethatbringsin muchmoney,andthelittlefamilylive veryfrugally.
Letuspeepintothekitchen.There weseetheLady,busyatherhousehold tasks,herlittleSonwith keep hercompany.Weknow,ofcourse, whothisFamilyis-theHolyFamily ofNazareth.Letuscontrastthiskitchenwiththosethatweareaccustomedto.Itisjustascleanasours,but povertyisinevidencethere.Iwonderhowourmodernhousewiveswould fareinsuchakitchen.I'mverymuch afraidthattheirsunnydispositions wouldsoonvanish.Butthiswasnot sowithOurLady.Shewasthepossessorofagiftthatfaroutweighedany hardship.ShewastheMotherof God,andinherlittlekitchensheknew thehappinessthatonlyGodcangive. Everyactwasaprayertoher,andthe meanesthouseholdtaskassumedanew glory,becauseshehadherDivineSon withher.

RAPHAELSANZIO, hererepresentedbytheMadonna dellaSedia,theVirginandSt.Nicholas,andthecelebratedSistineMadonna,enjoysthemostfamousname inthehistoryofpainting.Hewas certainlythegreatestfigureofthe ItalianRenaissance.Heexcellednot onlyinpainting,butinarchitecture, scenerydesigning,tapestries,ceramics, andworkinggoldandsilverplate. Hisversatilitywasmostpronounced. however,inhispaintingitself.He wasequallyskilledinoils,temperaor mosaic;inportraiture,classicalgenre andreligioussubjects.Ithasbeen saidthatacollectionofhisworks,arrangedchronologically,wouldshowhis developmentandmasteryofasmany differentstyles,inaworkinglifetimeof20years,ascouldbeseenin generationsofotherpainters.
Itisinthetreatmentofreligioos subjects,however,thatRaphael reachestheculminationofhispowers, andparticularlyinhisinnumerable Madonnas.Thisfameendureduncloudedforthreecenturiesuntilmoderntimes,whenthepre-Raphaelites, heraldedbyRuskin,violentlyattachedhisworkaslackingsimplicity, spiritualityandsincerity.Thereactionofthe"Primitives"wasasviolentasitwasunjust.Admittedly Raphaelhadunworthypupilstowhom hehadtocommitsomeofthevast bulkofworkentrustedtohim;admittedlytherehavebeenmoreoriginalminds,andthathemadenodiscoveriesinnaturelikesomeofhisgreat rivals.But,thoughhemaynever regainthesingularpre-eminenceofthe past,heyetappearsasthemostexquisiteandperfectexpressionofanage andasocietywhichwillneverreturn. ThecharacterofRaphaelissaidto havebeennotedforthesameharmonythatdistinguisheshispaintings. Andcertainitisthatheexcelsallhis rivalsandcriticsinhisincomparable senseofbeauty.Nootherhasshown ussuchnobilityinnature,noone everhadorledustoformabetter opinionofhumannature.Noone, asLouisGillethassaid,"hasknown sowellhowtoinvestthehighestand mostpreciousideaswithplasticforms. Hehasgivenformtoourdreams."
THEMADONNAOFTHECHAIR isofthesameperiod.Itisamong hismostpopularworks.OurLady isportrayedasapeasantwomanof theperiod,withthenationalkerchief onherhair.Ofallhispictured works,thisMadonnaisthemost human.Thewholeofmaternallove seemstobeenclosedwithintheperfectcircleofthispicture.
THESISTINEMADONNA. Calledtheloveliestpaintinginthe wholeofart,thisMadonnaisatthe sametimethemostbeautifuldevotionalpicture.Theimpressionis formed,notonlybytheidealismofits form,butbythevision-likerepresentationofspace,bytheschemeof cloudsonwhichtheVirginisupheld, andbythesolemnityofthedraping. Analmostforbiddingmysteryfills thismajesticcanvas,trulyunequalled inRaphael'swork.
THEHOLYFAMILYOFFRANCISI.
Thispainting,nowintheLouvre,is consideredtorepresentanideaby Raphael,butprobablyexecutedby oneofhispupils.Itwasdoneduring hisperiodatRomeandshowsthe growingweaknessofthedivorceetweenplanningandexecution.The harmonyandlyricalnatureofhis workundoubtedlysufferedfromthis divisionoflabour.
ANTONIOALLEGRI, knownfromhisbirth-placeasCorreggio,rankswiththegreatestItalian masters,althoughsomeplacehimat theheadoftheDecadentor"Sweet" schoolofItalianpainting.Theremarkablethingaboutthisartistis thathehadnoteachersofnote,no pupils,andmadenoacquaintance withhiscontemporaries.Theoriginal of"TheHolyFamily,"pictured above,isintheLouvre.Thefigures areinwonderfulperspectiveandthe painterhasgiventhemunparalleled graceandmovement.
CARLODOLCI, aFlorentinepainterofthe17th.century,isnotableinthathepaintedreligiousworksexclusively,andthathe wasoneofthefewmasterswhosepictureswereeagerlysoughtafterbyhis countrymenduringhislifetime.His work,usuallyonasmallcanvas,is highlyfinishedandthecolouringis verydelicate.Thesimplicityand tranquillityonthefacesofhispaintingsofChristandOurLadyseemlittleshortofinspired.Hispictures, however,reflectthedecadentsweetnessofalltheItalianartofhistime. HewasthelastoftheFlorentine School,andthelastreal"masterof theRenaissance."

Churchart,'devotional' art!Theconventionsofthedrawing-roomaredrearyenough,God knows!Butthingsnoonewouldtolerateinthedrawing-roomareconsideredquitesatisfactoryinchurch. TheChurchstillneedsthesamekind ofthingsasshehasalwayswanted, buttheworldcannotandwillnot supplythemexceptinthelowanddegradedformofthechurchfurniture shop-'RepositoryArt.'
