Itisnotapeaceatanypricefor whichwepray,norhastheHoly Fatheratanytimesuggestedthat ajustpeacewasnotworthfightingfor,anddyingfor.Clearly, too,hehasenunciatedthebasic principlesuponwhichanypeace agreementmustbebuilt,and untiltheyarefinallyacceptedby victorsandvanquishedalikethere willhenorealpeace,butonly anotherfutilearmistice.

Itisindeedsignificantthatin eachyearofthewartheHoly Fatherhaschosenthemonthof Mayforacrusadeofprayerfrom thesufferingranksofChristendom.Itisnolesssignificantthat heplaceshishopesforthefinal triumphoftruthandjusticein theomnipotentmediationofOur Lady.Forsurelyinthis,its darkesthour,humanitywillnot heleftunsuccouredbytheGodgivenMotherofmankind.

Witheveryconfidence,then,in theMotherofGodandmen,to whomourcountryandourArchdiocesearededicated,letusturn tohertobegforthiswar-racked worldthejustandChristian peaceforwhichthepeopleofall nationsdesire.

Correct.Thefirstcommandment forbidsthat:andweinsistthatthe firstcommandment,justastheothers, mustheobserved.

Butyou"do"adoreher,andyou"do" serveher;thereforeyoubreakthe firstcommandmentnotoncebut twice.

Doyourigidlylimityourselftothe "OurFather"'Andhowoftendo yousayit?Doesyourprejudice :igainstrepetitionallowitonlyonce inalifetime,andexemptyoufromall prayerfortherestofyourdays?

DidHeignoreMaryHewouldnot havebeenaverygoodson,norwould HehavehadmuchrespectforGod whosaid,"Honourthyfatherandthy mother."Christwasaperfectexampleofvirtueinallthings.Andif HedidnotrecogniseMary,whydid HegodowntoNazarethandbesubjecttoher?WhydidHeperform Hisfirstmiracleatherrequest?And whydidHemakesuchspecialprovisionforheratthemomentofHis death?

WhensomeonepraisedMary,Christ paidnoattention,butsaidthatonly thoseareblessedwhokeeptheword ofGod.(Lk.XI,28.)

TheGospelsarefragmentaryaccounts,andwedonotknowallthat transpiredonthatoccasion.Buteven so,theactualtextisnotopposedin anywaytothehonourwegiveto Mary.SomeonepraisedMary.Christ replied,"Yearather,blessedarethey

dieted,"allgenerationsshallcallme blessed."Yetblessedaretheywho hearthewordofGodandkeepit!We CatholicscallMaryblessedindeed, whilstmanyProtestantssearchScriptureinthefondhopeofprovingsomethingtoherdiscredit!

Christcalledher,"Woman,"whenBe said,"Woman,beholdthySon." litthelanguageChristspoke,that wordwasatermofgreatrespect,howeverharshlyitmaysoundinourmodernEnglishlanguage.OurLord wouldhavebeenthelasttoslightHis mother,athingwedespiseinevery man;andaboveallinHislastand mosttenderwordstoher.Norarewe likelytopleaseHimbyseekingtodishonourher.

DidHenotsaytoheratthemarriage feastofCana,"Woman,whatisthat totheeandtoMe?" Hedid.ButmostcertainlyHeintendednoreproachtoMary.Heractionwasoneofpurecharitytoothers. Foreseeingthepossibledistressof others,sheaskedHimtorelievethem: andHewouldnotrebukesounselfish athought.NorwouldHespeakto herwithanytraceofdisrespect.Then, too,hadMaryaskedawrongthing, Christwouldnothavedoneit,nor wouldHehavesanctionedarequest 'Hehadtorebuke.AndMaryknew thatshehadnotbeenreprehended,or shewouldnothavetoldthewaiters todowhatherSonwouldtellthem. Shewouldhavedroppedthematter. Why,then,didChristspeakthus?It wasHisfirstmiracle,thefirstpublic signofHisdivinitywroughtbyHimself.AndHewantedtobringout nubliclythefactthatHewasdoing it,notasthesonofanearthlymother andaccordingtoHishumannature, butcallinguponHisdivinenatureas theeternalSonofGod.Hedidit

becauseHismotherrequestedit,but HedidnotdoitbyanypowerderivedfromHismother.Hethusbrought outbothforthelistenersandforus thatthisbeginningofmiracleswas proofofHisdivinity,althoughinappearanceHeseemedbutman.

WhypraytoMaryatall?

BecauseGodwillsthatweshouldel, so,andbecausesuchprayerstoher areoftheutmostvalue.Godoften willstogivecertain'favoursonlyon conditionthatwegotosomesecondaryagent.Sodomwas bespared throughtheintercessionofAbraham: Naaman,theleper,wastobecured onlythroughthewatersoftheJordan.NowMaryis,andmustever remain,themotherofChrist.Shestill hasamother'srightsandprivileges, andisabletoobtainforusmany graces.Butletusviewthingsreasonably.IfIdesiretopray,Ican certainlypraytoGoddirectly.Ye. wouldyoublamemeif,attimes,I weretoaskmyownearthlymothe toprayformealso?Sucharequest isreallyaprayertoherthatshemay intercedeformewithGod.Certainly, ifImettheMotherofChristonearth, Iwouldaskhertoprayforme,awl shewoulddosoAndinhermore perfectstatewithChristinheaven sheisnotlessabletohelpme. ButaprayertoGoddirectlymustbe moreefficaciousthanaprayerto Mary.

Notnecessarily.Itmightwellbe thatGodintendstohonourOurLady bygrantingthefavourIseekthrough herintercessioninaparticularway.In thatcasethegraceistobegiven throughherprovidedIhonourherby addressingmyselftoher.Again, everyprayertoMaryisinrealitythe askingofa'favourfromGodevenas themotherofChristisrequestedto askthesamefavouralso.Itisoften bettertoaskGodforafavourand tohavesomeoneelseprayingtoGod withoneforthesamefavour.Two prayersarebetterthanone.And aboveall,whentheotheronepraying isChrist'sownmother. GodlovesyoumorethanMaryloves you. Thatisso.ButHelovesMary morethanHelovesme.Andasshe ismorepleasingtoGodthanIam, Hewillhemorereadytograntherrequests. Itisunscripturaltoattributepower toMary. Thatisaveryunscripturalstatement.AtHismother'srequestJesus changedwaterintowineatCana, thoughHehadsaid,"Mytimeisnot yetcome."St.Jamestellsusthat "theprayerofajustmanavaileth much."Ja.,V.,16.Howmuchmore theprayerofMary!

DoestheBiblesanctionsuchprayers toMary?

Yes.AllthroughtheBibleyouwill findGodconferringfavoursthrough theprayersofothers.IntheOld Testamentwereadoftheprayersof Abraham,Moses,andofthevarious prophets.IntheNewTestament,St. Jamestellsusto"prayforoneanother,"inthetextIhavejustquoted. Ifwemustalwayspraydirectlyto Godandmaynotasktheprayersof others,whydidSt.Paulwritetothe Thessalonians,"Prayforusthatwe maybedeliveredfromimportunate andevilmen?"2Thess.III.,2.Why didhenotaskthatdirectlyofGod,insteadofaskingtheprayersofthe Thessalonians?Orwouldyoubemore scripturalthan'theNewTestament itself? Thereisbutonemediatorthereisno placeforMary.

Christistheprincipalmediatorin Hisownright.Maryisasecondary mediatrix,through,with,andinChrist. WithoutHimshewouldhaveno

power,andthereforeHeisthesource ofallmediationwithGodonbehalf ofmen.

Howcanyoublendthemediationof otherswiththatofChrist?

Itfollowsfromthedoctrineofthe CommunionofSaints.Remember thatbyBaptism,everyChristianisincorporatedwithChrist.St.Paulsays. "Christisthehead:yearethemem-

Mk.1X.,40.EveryChristianisChrist inamostintimateway.St.Paultells usthatifabaptisedpersonsins,he takesthemembersofChristandmakes themthemembersofiniquity!When thatsameSt.Paulwaspersecutingthe Christiansbeforehisconversion,Christ appearedtohimandsaid,"Saul,Saul, whypersecutestthouMe?"Iledid notsay,"1,1VhypersecutestthouMy Disciples?"Ilecouldequallysay, whenwepraytoMaryortothe Saints,"WhataskeththouofMe?" WhenwehonourOurLadyorthe Saints,wehonour,nottheirownmerelyhumanandcreatednature,butwe honourChristinthemaccordingto thedoctrineofScripture.TheCatholicChurchistheonlycompletelyscripturalChurch.

DoCatholicsbelievethatMaryis omnipotent?

No.Godaloneisomnipotent.But throughMarywehaveaccesstothe omnipotenceofGod.

HowdoyouknowthatMaryhears you? TheCatholicChurchguarantees that,andsheisheretotellusthe truthaboutsuchthingsinthenameof ChristandwithHisauthority.Reasonalsoassuresusthat,asshecould knowourprayersinthislifeandpray forusinturn,soshecandosointhe moreperfectstateinheaven.Finally experienceprovesit,forshehasmanifestedherpowerinthousandsofconcreteinstancesinanswertoprayer.

TheImmaculateConception

WasitnotsignificantthattheGospelsmakenomentionoftheImmaculateConception?

NoneofthefourGospelsexplicitly mentionstheImmaculateConception, whichmeansthefreedomoftheBlessedVirginMaryfromOriginalSinfrom thefirstmomentofherexistence.

NoneoftheGospelspurportstogive afullaccountofthelifeandteaching ofOurLord.Theyaretrustworthy butincompleteandsupplementary documents.Itisthereforedifficult toseewhatparticularsignificanceattachestothefactthatSt.Markdoes notmentiontheImmaculateConception,unless,ofcourse,youbaseyourselfonthegroundlessassumptionthat theGospelscontainthefullteaching ofChristorthatSt.Markwasunder obligationtomentiontheImmaculate Conceptionifitactuallytookplace.

THEGOSPELSANDTHEVIRGIN BIRTH.

MatthewandLukecontainwholepassageswhich(ifwritten,italater date)musthavebeencopiedalmost wordforwordfromMark.

Assuming,forthesageofargument, thattheGospelsbothofSS.Matthew andLukewerewrittenafterSt.Mark's, why"must"weassumethatthey copiedwholepassagesalsowordfor wordfromSt.Mark?Thereisnota shredofhistoricalevidenceforthat assertion,and,moreover,theinference isillogical,involvingthefallacy:post hoc,properhoc. Theyaretheonlytwowhorefertothe VirginBirth.

Onecouldnotevenbegintothinkof herworthexceptintermsofthemarvellousprivilegesandfavourswhich Godhadconferreduponher. Evennon-Christianmen,whodonot believeintheDivinityofChrist,butat leastinHisperfectionasaMan,have beenabletoappreciatetosomeextent fromanaturalviewpointthenecessaryworthofHisMother.Sucha manasLongfellowspokeofheras"our taintednature'ssolitaryboast"and "notunforgiventoherasuppliantknee mightbend."This,Isay,ispossible naturally.Maryiscalled,amongCatholics"OurLady,"forasChesterton said."shewasours,"andasananonymouspoethundredsofyearsbefore beautifullyexpressedit:"Wellmight suchaLadyGod'sMotherbe."But whatissplendidtothemerenatural mindofman,isofalmostunbearable brilliancetotheeyesoffaith.For MaryistheMotherofGod,foundworthytoconceiveandtobeartheSaviour oftheworld.Whatpresumptionwill denyherhonouruponwhomGodhas lavishedthisincredibledignity?Small wonderthattheChurchhasnever weariedinveneratingherwhomits

Thesecondsentencewasutteredbya SaintundertheinspirationoftheHoly Ghost.Botharetobefoundinthe Bible,whichtheyclaimasthesolerule offaith.Thethirdandlastsentence

Now,sinceallherdignityandworth derivessolelyfromhercompleteand utterdependenceonherSon,itis surpassingstrangethatthe"Reformers"andtheirmoderndisciplesshould havemadehertheobjectofChesterton'sbeautifullines:Shenamednohypocritesaviperrace, Shenailednotyrantforavulpinecur, Shefloggednohuckstersfromtheholy place; Whywasyournewwiseworldin dreadofher?

TherecentcontroversiesintheEasternStatesovertheprovidingofentertainmentfortroopsonSundaysisnot anewissue.Theobservanceofthe Sabbath,togetherwithpennyraffles, racing,drinkingandtheScarletWoman ofRome,hasbeentheunfadingpiece deresistanceofournon-Conformist brethrenthesemanyyears.Thediscussionwhichthissubjecthasprovoked leadsonetobelievethatthemodern mindtendstowardsfutilityinthematterofreligion.OutsidetheChurch thereappearstoexistpositivegenius forcamel-swallowingandadistressinglypainfulstrainingatthegnats.Not thatworkingonaSundayisasmall matter,butthatplayingontheSabbathisanirrelevantonetothequestionofitssanctity.Catholicsbelieve incommonwithallChristiansthat Godcommandedonedayoftheweek tobededicatedtohimselfinanespecial way.Thisisachievedinitsprimary sensebythedirectworshipofGod. Catholicsfulfillthisobligationinthe highestpossiblemannerbyofferingthe HolySacrifice.

Thedisputearisesoutofthesecond partoftheCommandment,whichforbidsservileworkontheSabbath.Itis obviousthatthisisnotofsuchimport. anceasthedirectworshipofGod,and itseemsthatmereinactivityisnot apositiveendinitself.Itisunlikely thatGodwouldbeglorifiedbysuch negativemethods.Itappearsrather asameanstoanend.Maniscommandedtolayasidehisordinarybusinessroutine(oranysupplementaryfinancialaffairs-thathemayfulfillthe primarydutyofworshipwithafree, undistractedmindandundividedattention.Norisitimprobablethat GodintendedtheSabbathinasecondarywaytogivemanamuchneeded relaxationofmindandbody,whichis necessarybothforhisphysicaland spiritualwell-being,especiallyinthese neuroticdaysofwar.Itisexceedinglydubiouswhetherthiswouldbe gainedinidleness,especiallyasthe Scripturesaresoinsistentastoits dangers.

Inthelightoftheseconsiderations, theCatholicChurchhasneverprotestedagainsthealthyrecreationon Sundays.butratherencouragedit. ProvidedoneattendstothefundamentalreasonfortheSabbath'sexistence, thereisnoreasonformopingabout fortherestoftheday.Itmight,however,beofferedasacounsel,thatCatholicsshouldendthedayastheybeganit.byworshippingintheTemple ofGod.Innoaspectcansportbe classedasworkorservilework,unless ofcourse.inthesedaysofprofessionalism,thereismoneyconnectedwithit. HerlittleSoniswithher,andherlove forHimisconstantlymirroredinher face.Herhusbandisacarpenterby trade,andweseehimbusyathis work.Itisnotatradethatbringsin muchmoney,andthelittlefamilylive veryfrugally.

Letuspeepintothekitchen.There weseetheLady,busyatherhousehold tasks,herlittleSonwith keep hercompany.Weknow,ofcourse, whothisFamilyis-theHolyFamily ofNazareth.Letuscontrastthiskitchenwiththosethatweareaccustomedto.Itisjustascleanasours,but povertyisinevidencethere.Iwonderhowourmodernhousewiveswould fareinsuchakitchen.I'mverymuch afraidthattheirsunnydispositions wouldsoonvanish.Butthiswasnot sowithOurLady.Shewasthepossessorofagiftthatfaroutweighedany hardship.ShewastheMotherof God,andinherlittlekitchensheknew thehappinessthatonlyGodcangive. Everyactwasaprayertoher,andthe meanesthouseholdtaskassumedanew glory,becauseshehadherDivineSon withher.

Andso,too,canthemodernhousewivesmakea"DivineOfficeofthe Kitchen,"justasOurLadydid.We can'tbeonourkneesprayingallthe time.Godrealisesthat;butwecan makeofourlivesonecontinuousprayerbyofferingupouractionsasprayers Whynotmakeastart,theninthatdomesticsphereinwhicheverywomenis athome-thekitchen?

RAPHAELSANZIO, hererepresentedbytheMadonna dellaSedia,theVirginandSt.Nicholas,andthecelebratedSistineMadonna,enjoysthemostfamousname inthehistoryofpainting.Hewas certainlythegreatestfigureofthe ItalianRenaissance.Heexcellednot onlyinpainting,butinarchitecture, scenerydesigning,tapestries,ceramics, andworkinggoldandsilverplate. Hisversatilitywasmostpronounced. however,inhispaintingitself.He wasequallyskilledinoils,temperaor mosaic;inportraiture,classicalgenre andreligioussubjects.Ithasbeen saidthatacollectionofhisworks,arrangedchronologically,wouldshowhis developmentandmasteryofasmany differentstyles,inaworkinglifetimeof20years,ascouldbeseenin generationsofotherpainters.

Itisinthetreatmentofreligioos subjects,however,thatRaphael reachestheculminationofhispowers, andparticularlyinhisinnumerable Madonnas.Thisfameendureduncloudedforthreecenturiesuntilmoderntimes,whenthepre-Raphaelites, heraldedbyRuskin,violentlyattachedhisworkaslackingsimplicity, spiritualityandsincerity.Thereactionofthe"Primitives"wasasviolentasitwasunjust.Admittedly Raphaelhadunworthypupilstowhom hehadtocommitsomeofthevast bulkofworkentrustedtohim;admittedlytherehavebeenmoreoriginalminds,andthathemadenodiscoveriesinnaturelikesomeofhisgreat rivals.But,thoughhemaynever regainthesingularpre-eminenceofthe past,heyetappearsasthemostexquisiteandperfectexpressionofanage andasocietywhichwillneverreturn. ThecharacterofRaphaelissaidto havebeennotedforthesameharmonythatdistinguisheshispaintings. Andcertainitisthatheexcelsallhis rivalsandcriticsinhisincomparable senseofbeauty.Nootherhasshown ussuchnobilityinnature,noone everhadorledustoformabetter opinionofhumannature.Noone, asLouisGillethassaid,"hasknown sowellhowtoinvestthehighestand mostpreciousideaswithplasticforms. Hehasgivenformtoourdreams."

THEMADONNAOFTHECHAIR isofthesameperiod.Itisamong hismostpopularworks.OurLady isportrayedasapeasantwomanof theperiod,withthenationalkerchief onherhair.Ofallhispictured works,thisMadonnaisthemost human.Thewholeofmaternallove seemstobeenclosedwithintheperfectcircleofthispicture.

THESISTINEMADONNA. Calledtheloveliestpaintinginthe wholeofart,thisMadonnaisatthe sametimethemostbeautifuldevotionalpicture.Theimpressionis formed,notonlybytheidealismofits form,butbythevision-likerepresentationofspace,bytheschemeof cloudsonwhichtheVirginisupheld, andbythesolemnityofthedraping. Analmostforbiddingmysteryfills thismajesticcanvas,trulyunequalled inRaphael'swork.

THEHOLYFAMILYOFFRANCISI.

Thispainting,nowintheLouvre,is consideredtorepresentanideaby Raphael,butprobablyexecutedby oneofhispupils.Itwasdoneduring hisperiodatRomeandshowsthe growingweaknessofthedivorceetweenplanningandexecution.The harmonyandlyricalnatureofhis workundoubtedlysufferedfromthis divisionoflabour.

ANTONIOALLEGRI, knownfromhisbirth-placeasCorreggio,rankswiththegreatestItalian masters,althoughsomeplacehimat theheadoftheDecadentor"Sweet" schoolofItalianpainting.Theremarkablethingaboutthisartistis thathehadnoteachersofnote,no pupils,andmadenoacquaintance withhiscontemporaries.Theoriginal of"TheHolyFamily,"pictured above,isintheLouvre.Thefigures areinwonderfulperspectiveandthe painterhasgiventhemunparalleled graceandmovement.

CARLODOLCI, aFlorentinepainterofthe17th.century,isnotableinthathepaintedreligiousworksexclusively,andthathe wasoneofthefewmasterswhosepictureswereeagerlysoughtafterbyhis countrymenduringhislifetime.His work,usuallyonasmallcanvas,is highlyfinishedandthecolouringis verydelicate.Thesimplicityand tranquillityonthefacesofhispaintingsofChristandOurLadyseemlittleshortofinspired.Hispictures, however,reflectthedecadentsweetnessofalltheItalianartofhistime.
