JesusChristwascondemnedonthe firstGoodFridayfor"politicism."He wasaccused)ofsettingthepeople againstCaesarandtheRomans.But, inreality,HewascondemnedforreactingagainstthepoliticsoftheHigh 'Priests,wholongedforatemporal reignoftheMessiahandthetemporal triumphoftheJewishpeopleandthe Sacerdotalcaste,insteadofthereligious triumphofGodandHisMessiah. JesusChristdidnotsharetheseaspirations,whichdebasedHisdivinemissiontoasimplepoliticalsphere.Hence Hewascondemnedtodeath.
In1923,whentheSupremeProcuratoroftheU.S.S.R.,Krylenko,at theinstigationofTrotskyandZinoviev, arrestedalltheclergyatLeningrad, andinitiatedthegreatMoscowtrials, heaccusedtheCatholicChurchofbeing apolitical,counter-revolutionaryororganisation,andthisaccusationwas oftenrepeatedduringthatperiod.
TheSovietStatehadconfiscatedthe churches,deprivedtheChurchofits juridicalpersonalityandinstitutedin itsplace''religioussocieties"ofthe faithful,profanedthesacredvessels,desecratedholyrelics,forbiddenthe teachingofCatechismtochildrenunder 18yearsofage,confiscatedtheparo-

chialregisters,givenadecisivedeathblowtoChristianmarriage,andprohibitedthecelebrationofMassandof religiouscultinprivatehouses.The clergy,comparingthislegislationwith CanonLaw,andfindingitcontrary, manifestedtheirfirmintentiontodisregarditandcontinuedtoteachCatechismtothechildren,andtosayMass; theyprintedanddistributednoticesto theirparishioners,urgingthemtohave theseanti-religiouslawsrepealed.The March,1923,trialwasheldexclusively todeterminethecriminalityornoncriminalityofpreferringthedivinelaw totheSovietlawwhenthislattercontradictedtheformer.Krylenkodeclaredittobeacrime,andcondemned theaccusedforpolitical,counter-revolutionaryagitation.
SincethatdatealltheCatholic priestsintheSoviet(excepttwo foreignerswhoenjoyspecialprivileges) havegraduallybeenarrestedbythe KRO-'branchoftheGPUforcombatingthecounter-revolution-andsentto concentrationcampsforpoliticalcounter-revolutionaryactivity.Whilethe SovietleadersweresuppressingtheCatholicclergy,theydeclaredtothe worldthattheywereprotectingthe Russians'freedomofconscience,and

thatthislibertywouldsuffernodetrimentwhiletheclergyabstainedfrom politicalactivity.
Theterm,PoliticalCatholicism,passedfromtheSovietintoGermany.When thenational-SocialistPartybeganto preach,andlaterimpose,theteachingofadoctrinetheHierarchyjudged incompatiblewithdivineRevelation andgraduallysuppressedeverypossiblemeansofcombatingitthrough thepress,theschool,thepulpitandCatholicassociations,theHierarchyprotestedandwarnedthefaithfultoprotecttheintegrityoftheirFaith.But theyhadtopaytheprice.Theclergy washunteddown,tribunalspublished strangeaccountsofarrests,theNational Pressbeganacampaignofdefamation towhichitwasforbiddentoanswer; andallthesemeasuresaresaidtobe takennotagainstreligion,butagainst thePoliticalCatholicismoftheclergy! Here,asintheU.S.S.R.,whoeverrefusedtosubmittotheanti-religious legislationwasaccusedofpoliticalactivity.
"PoliticalCatholicism"hassince madeatouroftheworld.TheexpressionwaspopularinSpainandin Mexico,andhasnowbecomecurrentin manyothercountries.Itisonthe
lipsofenemiesoftheChurch,ofnonpractisingCatholics,andevenofcertainpractisingCatholics,whodonot scrupletocriticisetheirBishopsand theSovereignPontiff.
"PoliticalCatholicism"maymeanthataCatholicemploystheChurch,her meansofsanctification,hermoralauthority,herinfluenceoverconsciences, notforareligiousend,butapolitical one.TheChurch'smissionofsaving allthesoulsredeemedbytheBloodof Christgivesherapre-eminenceover allpoliticalparties,andwhoeverseeks todetertheChurchinhermissionin ordertoobtainmaterialadvantagesfor himself,hisparty,orhiscountryissacrificingreligiontopolitics.
"PoliticalCatholicism"maybeunderstoodinanothersense:theeffort ofaCatholictoserve,atthesame time,bothhiscountryandhisreligionbyparticipatinginthepolitical lifeofthecountryinwhichhelives. Lastyear,Iwasunabletoreach BethlehemforChristmasDay,even thoughIwasbutafewmilesaway. Thisyear,however,afewofusmanagedtoobtainleavetojourneythere, andIwaslookingforwardtothetrip veryeagerly.Hopesforafineweek vanishedonSunday,December21,asa terrificthunderstormarose,whichcontinuedforovertwelvehours,withunabatedfury,turningthesunbaked clayeysoilintoaquagmire.Dayand night,withoutwaitingtotakeabreath, therainjustpoureddownonthesoddenearth.Ardentlywehopedthat theelementswouldrealisethatwehad alongwaytogotoreachBethlehem, andletup,butapparentlythatwas notintheorderofthings,eventhough weconsidereditmustsoonpausefor arefill.
ChristmasEvedawnedwetand bleak,andpresenteduswiththealternativeofbeingwettotheskinvery veryquickly,ormissingourleave. Wouldwego?We'llprobablyfindit verydifficulttofindtransport,and mightnotreachourdestinationafter all.Yes,we'llgo.However,atmidday,justaswewerethinkingofsettingout,thedownpourtrebleditself, andindecisionbecameoncemorethe orderoftheday.Nevertheless,as soonasmesswasover-wedidn'twant tosetoutononemptystomach,becausesomeonewhoknewmorethanI dooncesaidthatanarmymarcheson thatportionofitsanatomy-weset outlightlyladen.My"luggage"consistedofapairofpyjamatrousersin onepocketofmygreatcoat,atoothbrush,tobaccopouch,matches,anda supplyofhandkerchiefsintheother. Overourgreatcoatswewrappedour ground-sheetstoprotecttheupperpart ofourbodies,andwebravedtheweather.Acoupleofbreakupswesoon looked,withthewaterrunningdown offtheground-sheetontoourcoats, andthencetoourboots.
Ourfirstliftcarriedusaboutsix milesalongtheroadquiteprotected fromtherain,andwebecamequite chirpy.However,thechirpinesswas soonknockedoutofusafterwegotout ofthevehicle,aswehadalongtrudge andwaitbeforetheoldthumbbore fruit.Pitythepoororphaninthe storm!Apparentlymanyofthedrivershadneverseenanorphanbefore, astheyfailedtorecogniseus.Everythingcomestohimwhowaits,andso anotherliftcametous.Oncemore outoftherain,weundidourgaiters, tookoffourbootsandsocks,wrung thefirstandthelast,anddrainedthe boots.Thebottomsofourtrousers wereverywet,too,butweweren't gametotakethemoffandwringthem. aswethoughtwemighthavetodescendfromthetruckwhilstinthe middleoftheoperation.Ourthird stagewascoveredinahugeempty truck,andweweretossedfromsideto sideliketheorangesonthefloor.Nevertheless,itwasagoodlyride,asitcarriedu,quitetenmiles.However,even thiswasbutpartoftheway,andwe eventuallylostit,andfoundourselves strandedlikeacoupleofshagsona spitpostinPerthwater.
Bythetimeanotherliftwasobtained,mythumbwasjustaboutgivingout,andIhadseriousthoughtsof employingtheotherthumbandreturningtocamp.Asmallutilitysavedthesituation,andwewerecarried alonginfinestyleforanotherfive milesundercover,enablingarepeat performanceofthestripteaseact. Haveyoueverattemptedtostandup inthebackofalowtruckwhilstitwas
movingalongaslipperyroadatforty milesanhour,tryingthewhiletodon apairofwettrousers?Asgarnishingforthatdelightfuldish,haveyou everfeltthedelightsofafloodof waterfromaholeinthecanvascanopy?Myfriend,ifyouhaven'tenjoyedthesethrills,youhaven'tlived! Ourlaststageprovedfortunate,as wefoundrefugeinautilityboundfor Jerusalem.Forawhilewewereable tolaughatthestorm,aswebowled alongatagoodspeed,necessarilyreducedatcertainplaceswherethewadis -wecallthemriversinAustralia-had encroachedontheroadway.Atone these,severalcarsandtruckshad beenbadlyhandled,andhadbeen washedovertheedge.Fortunately, ourdriverknewhislorryandhisjob, andwegraduallyascendedthemountainsofJudea.Theridecarriedusto themainY.M.C.A.buildinginJerusalem,andwesetaboutobtainingaccommodation,whichweknewwas scarce.
DowntotheOldCitywewent,and wendedourwaytothe"CasaNova,"a hospicerunbytheFranciscansinthe goodolddaystohousepilgrimsunable topayforaccommodation.Here, fortunesmiledonus,andaroomwas obtained.Simon,theporter,tookus inhand,showedustheroomsolovely andclean,sowarmanddry,andorderedustobedwhilsthetookourclothes awaytodry.However,webeggeda fewmomentsgracewhilstwewentout andpurchasedapairofsocks.How thatgalledme!Backatcampwe bothhadadozenormorepairs,but wehadtravelledtoolight,andsohad topaytheprice.Andwhataprice! Forapairofwoollensocks,the equivalentoftenshillings,sowe madedowithapairofveryverycottonycottonsoxathalfacrown.
Simontookawayournethergarmentstodrythem,andwewrapped oursocksandgaitersaroundthehot waterradiatorthatmadetheroomso cosyandwarm.Atabouthalfpast six,wearosefromthebeautifulwarm andsoftbed,anddonnedournearly dryclothes,andthenewsocks, Sadtorelate,wehadforgottenabout ourboots,andtheywerestillsodden. However,aswecouldn'tgooutinthe wet'barefoot,weputthemon,andour soximmediatelyharmonisedwith them,muchtoourdiscomfort.
Warmedbyaverygooddinner,we oncemorefeltfitfortheroadtoBethlehem,butourattemptswereunavailing,astransportwasnottobehadfor loveofmoney.Havingsearchedfor overanhourinthepeltingrain,we returned,wetanddiscouraged,toCasa Nova,havingdecidedtoattendMidnightMassinJerusalem,andattempt tomakeBethlehemonthenextday.
Bythistime,youmaybesure,there wasquiteawadiofourowninthe roomfromtheground-sheets,soour entrywasthesignalforanumberof newtributariestodevelopandjoin themainstream.Offcameourgaiters, boots,apologiesforsox,andourtrousers.Oncemoretheradiatorperformedherculeantasks,andmoreor lessdriedthem.Towardsmidnight, wedressed-ouroriginalsoxwereby thistimequitedry,sowefeltcomparativelydryshod-andwendedour waythroughthecontinuousrainto theChurchofSanSalvatore,wherewe attendedMass,andreceivedHolyCommunionwiththeChristianArabs.This churchistheparishchurchofJerusalem,andwasundertheprotectionof theEmperorofAustria,whoembellisheditsaltarfurnishingsveryrichly.

Aswecameoutofthechurch,we metanotherofourlads,whohadalso madehiswayupinstages.Alldevotees ofthethumbrealisethatitissuicidal toattempttoobtainliftsinnumbers, soourpartyhadsplitupintothree groups.Uptothistime,Jockhad beenunsuccessfulinfindingaccommodation,sowetookhimtoourroom, and,aseachofushadtwomattresses (imaginesuchluxuryinthearmy!)we gaveoneeachtohim,andheslepton thefloor,'betweenthetworivers,CollooyandWallace.There'shardlyany needformetorepeattheperformanceoftheradiator,asthatoughtto betakenforgrantedbythistime.

ThenceweboardedaWogbus,bound forBethlehem.Thetripisquitea shortone,butitprovedveryinterestingfromthehetrogeneouscollection thatmakeupitscomplement.Naturally,assoonaswegotin,wewanted thebustomoveoffimmediately,but wehadtopossessoursoulsinpatience, asbusesheredon'tgountiltheyare full.Duringourwait,wefoundmany kindredsoldiersoftheAllies.Byfar themostinterestingwasaMalabarIndiansoldier,whowasveryfriendlyand verywelleducated.Severallanguages hespoke-hehadoccasiontoemploy themallonthebus,astherewere abouteightnationsrepresented-and hisconversationwasveryinteresting. Itappearedstrangetofindthemain churchnodifferentfromusual,until itisrecalledthattheGreekChurch controlsthatportion,andthatfor them,Christmasdoesnotfalluntil later,astheystilladheretotheold JulianCalendar.However,armed withalightedtaper,wedescendedthe stepstotheCaveoftheNativity,and attendedMasscelebratedatthealtar oftheManger.ContinuousMassesare offeredthereallthemorningfrommidnight.

Hearingthattheroadhadfailedto weathertheconsistentrain,wemade hastetohavetherumourdispelled,or reputablyconfirmed.Onourwayto theMilitaryPolice,whoknowallthese things,weranintotheheaviesthailstormthatIhaveeverexperienced. Goodevening,everybody.Thisis theQuestionBoxsessionfromStation 2SMfor1942.Beforecommencing, however,Ioweyouallafewwordsof explanation.Manyofyouwillbe surprisedbyhearinganewvoicefrom yourradiosets;othersbyhearinga voicetheyhavepossiblyheardbefore. Thereasonforthechangeisbestgiven byalittlebitofhistory.Towards thecloseoftheyear1928,IinauguratedthisQuestionBoxsession,andcarrieditoncontinuouslyuntiltheend of1939.ThenIwenttoAmericafur thewholeoftheyear1940todevote myselftoliteraryworkthereandfulfil aseriesoflectureengagementsand radiotalksinvariouscitiesofthe UnitedStates.
DuringmyabsencetheRev.Dr. Ryan,whobelongstothesameReligiousOrderandthesameCommunityas myself,verykindlyundertooktokeep thesessiongoing.Thismeantabandoningmanyofhisowninterests,and althoughhegladlymadethesacrifice, hebeggedmetokeeptomypartof thebargain,andnotstayawaymore thantheproposedyear.Naturally, hewishedtoresumehisownworkas soonaspossible.Unfortunately,I couldnotgetbackintimetocommencethesessionin1941,sobesides fulfillingthedutythroughout1940,he consentedtocarryonduringthefirst weeksof1941,untilIwasreadytoresume.Intheend,owingtootherdemandsthatweremadeuponme,he completedthewholeoflastyear,so thatfortwocontinuousyearsyouhave hadthebenefitofhisservices. The"Convict"Priests. ThegrowthoftheChurchinAustraliaisanextraordinarystory.With Americaclosedtothetransportationof convictsbytheseveranceofthecolonyfromBritain,theproblemofprisonersandofinsufficientgaolaccom-
modati,.nbecamesopressingthatsome arrangementhadquicklytobemade. Soitwasthatin1788thefirstfleet, underGovernorPhillip,emptiedits miserablehumantreightuponthe shoresofSydneyCove.ItisonrecordthatRev.ThomasWalsh,apriest ofOssory,Ireland,petitionedtoaccompanythefleetandattendtothe spiritualneedsoftheprisoners,buthis petitionwasrejected. Soitwasthat,sofarasweknov. therewasnopriesttoadministerto theCatholicswhowerethenonAustraliansoil.Thenextpriestscame withthebatchofpoliticaloffenders transportedfromIrelandaftertheinsurrectionof'98.TheywereFrs.Hat. old,DixonandO'Neill,unjustlytransportedforcomplicityintherebellion.
Inthecolonytheywereforbidden exercisetheirministry,thoughathird ofthepopulationwasCatholic.An glicanismwasregardedofficiallyasthe religionofthesettlement,andthe wholeprisonpopulationwascompelled toattendAnglicanservices.Refitsa' waspunishedfirstbyimprisonment, nextbyreducedrations,nextbythe "cat."Thereweretwenty-fivelashes forthefirstrefusal,fiftyforthesecond,and,ifthiswasnotsuccessfulin breakingthespirit,therefollowed transportationtothehorrorsofNon folkIsland.ThechildrenofCatholic convictswerebroughtupintheofficialcreed.
In1803,however,aftermanyrequests,FatherDixonwasconditionallyemancipatedandpermitted,oncea month,andundersevererestrictions,to exercisehisministry.Butitwas soonrepresentedthatthegatheringtogetheroftheIrishonSundaymorningforMasswasinrealityasinister occasionforthefomentingofrebellion. ThepermissionaccordedtoFather Dixonwaswithdrawn.Inthesame year,1803,FatherO'Neill,hisinno cenceestablished,returnedtoIreland.
In1808FatherDixonfollowed.Two yearslaterFatherHaroldwaspermittedtodepart:thereaftertherewasno priestatall.

ThethoughtfulcelebrationofPassionSunday,oncemoreapproachinginthecycleoftheLiturgicalyear,shouldservetoremindus,first,thattherewasaPassion-apassionuniqueinallhistory;andsecondly,ofthereasonsforthatPassioninwhichthe SecondPersonoftheTrinity,asamanonearth,wasmadetobite thedustofaJudeanroadway,andlaternailedupbythehands andfeettohangbleedingandsuffocatinguntilHedied.
Itwasasavagetragedythatleavesusspell-boundasweread thelaconicaccountpreservedinthewritingsoffourmenwho knewHimintimately.Theyseemsoobviouslyover-awedthemselvesbythethingthathappenedontheeveofthepaschalfeast oftheJewsintheyear33.GodHimselfhadappearedamong themasaman,andofasuddenHisextraordinarycareerhad endedinarrest,torture,andacriminal'sdeath-sentence-crucifixion.ButmorestaggeringstillwasthefactthatHehadbeen buriedonFridayeveningjustbeforetheeveningstarappeared, andonthefollowingSundaymorning,asthefirststreaksofdawn gildedtherangestotheeast,HehadrisenfromHistomb,and hadlivedwiththemsomefortydays.BeforetheirveryeyesHe hadthenascendedtoheaven,andthelastthathumaneyeshadseen ofHimwasasacloudenvelopedHisbodyrisingslowlyintheair aboveMountOlivet.outsideJerusalem.
Relicsstillextantconfirmthefactofthetortureanddeathof Christ.TheChristiancivilisationitselfconfirmsthefactofHis resurrectionfromthedead.UntilthislastcenturytheOldWorld andtheNewhadnotdoubtedthetruthandrealityofeitherdoctrineoftheChristianfaith.Catholicsstillbelieveunhesitatingly notonlyinthehistoricalcertaintyofthesetwofacts,butalsoin thetremendoussignificanceattachedtothemandtaughtbythe Church.TheyarethebasictruthsuponwhichthewholeCatholicphilosophyoflifeisconstructed.
Rememberingthese,themostmomentousfactsinthestory ofmankind,andremindingourselvesthatintheseanxiousdays atallcostswemustputfirstthingsfirst,wecanbutpraytheglorifiedChristthatinthetestingwewillnotbefoundwanting.We mustgivetoGodthethingsthatareGod's,andtoCaesarthe thingsthatarehis.WehaveadutytoourGodandourRedeemer,andadutytoourcountrytoo-maywebefoundwanting inneither,butmayeachofusmeritthefinalcommendationof bothGodandcountry:\Veilclone,goodandfaithfulservant!

To-daywecelebratetheFeastofSt. Patrick.Wedosoundertheshadow ofoneofthegreatestcalamitiesthat everbefellthehumanrace.Itaffords usnosmallmeasureofrelieftoturnour thoughtsfromthedevastationofwar, tocontemplatetheworkofonewho preachedpeaceandhappinesstomen ofgoodwill.Perilouswerethetimes anduniversalthestrifethatsawthe birthandboyhoodofSt.Patrick.The greatRomanEmpirewhichextended overEuropeforhundredsofyears hadpassedthemeridienofitssplendour,andwascrashingtoitsfall.The RomansoldierwhosevalouranddisciplineonthebattlefieldmadehisEmpiregreat,wassuccumbingtothe licenceandsensualitythatrottedsocietyatRome.Hisvalourwaspassing,andthegreatbarbariantribes weresweepingdownonRome,from North,SouthandEast.Lawand orderwerebeingoverthrown.The timeswereripeforbanditandpirate. AraidontheNorth-westCoastofEngland,wherePatricklived,sweptPatrickfromhishomeandfriends,and hewassoldintoslaveryinIreland. Letusnot'bewailthelotofPatrickas aslave,cutofffromhomeandhearth.
Foradversityandtribulationareoften thefiresthatburnthemeanerelements fromthesoul,andpurifyit,toallthat isnobleandinspiring.Aftersixyears, heescapedfromslaverytorejointhe familycircle,totellthemofhisstrange experienceinIreland,andtheperils thatattendedhisescape.Lateryears sawPatrickinvariousecclesiastical centresinFrance;andincluecourse hewaspromotedtothepriesthood.
Nowtheinspirationofreturningto Ireland,toconvertthenation,stirred hissoul.Hispetitionwaspresented byhisecclesiasticalsuperiorstothe Pope.Hisrequestwasgranted.ConsecratedabishopandcarryingtheCommissionofPopeCelestine,helandedin Ireland.Hissuccesswasamazing.
Thewholenation,withitskingsand tribes,renouncedtheirpaganritesand embracedChristianity.Exceptingthe ApostlesandSt.Paul,noothermissionaryenjoyedsuchafruitfulandenduringapostolate.NootherSaint everenshrinedhimselfintheheartsof apeopleliketheSaintwehonourtoday.Thecenturies,rollingon,would wearthegraniteonthemountainrocks ofIreland,andthewatersoftheAtlanticwouldparethecliffsandheadlands,butthenameofSt.Patrick wouldeverremainasfreshasthe Springtideverdurethatenrobedthat IsleoftheWest.St.Patricknot onlybeganbutfinishedhiswork.A fullhierarchyandpriesthoodwereestablishedbyhim,andthestandardof theCrossfloatedoverthefourshores ofIrelandeveninthelife-timeofthe Saint.
distinguishedwriterandtravelleron visitingAlexandriarecently,wasstruck bythesimilaritybetweenthestyleof architectureintheecclesiasticalruins ofAlexandria,andthestyleofarchitecturethatnowgracesecclesiastical buildingsinIreland.
Whileschoolsandcollegeshummed withtheintellectualactivityofSaint andScholarinIreland,thelightsof Christianityandlearningwereburning lowoverEurope.TheGothsand HunsweresweepinginhordesoverEurope.Churchesandschoolswere goingdownbeforethem.Libraries andarttreasureswereperishinginthe generaldevastation;thetwilightofthe DarkAgeswasgatheringaround.The IrishSeasavedIrelandfromthedarknessthatsettledonEuropeduringthe DarkAges.Herchurchesandcolleges werepreservedandtheprestigeof learningwashighest,whenthatofEuropewaslowest.And,now,history recordsafactwhichgiveslegitimate pridetoeveryheartthatthrobswith Irishblood:whiletheDarkAgesrolled heavyoverEurope,Irelandsentforth hermissionariestotheContinentto rescuethemfromignoranceandbarbarism.AndifEuropeemergedfrom thedarknessoftheseventh,eighth,and ninthcenturiestothelightofthecivilisationwhichnowobtains,nosmall creditisduetoIrishscholars.That distinguishedwriterandtraveller,H. V.Morton,anEnglishmanandaProtestant,writes:"Ireland'spre-eminsnce inclassicalstudiesduringtheDark Ages,andthenumberofGreekand Latinscholars,whichshesenttoeducateEurope,fromthetimeofCharlemagneonwards,haveoftenbeencited asaremarkableandinexplicablefactof history.ButIdonotknowwhyit shouldbeso,fortheIrishmonkswere greattravellers,anditishighlyprobable,theydrewtheirHellenisticculturestraightfromthetheological schoolsofAlexandria."
Incidentally,wehavehereacrushingrefutationofthatoft-repeatedproposition:thattheCatholicChurch standsinthewayoflearningandgeneralculture.Foritwaswhenthe IrishChurchhadmostliberty,Ireland's reputeforscholarshipwashighest,and onlyundertheswordofreligiouspersecution,didthelustreofherlearning dimanddecline.ButwarsandpersecutionsareoftenGod'schastening meanstoachieveahighpurpose.So. too,inIreland'scase.Persecution drovethesonsofSt.Patrickintoother lands,wheretheexilesbecameApostles,andthestatelyecclesiasticalCatholicedificesthatgracethegreat citiesofAmerica,NewZealandand Australia,hadtheirfoundationslaid byIrishexiles.Sucharethefar-flung 'fruitsofSt.Patrick'sApostolate.Today,allovertheworld,everyone whoseheartcarriesIrishblood,will kneelandsay:St.Patrick,prayforde. ThelittlepriestofArgenteuil,good butfeeble,wasquiteawareofhisdanger.Themonksofthenearbymonasteryhadtransferredthesacredrelic tohisparishchurchintimetoescape destructionwhentherabblehaddriven themoffandwreckedtheirmonastery. Somehowthenewshadleakedout,and atanymomenthemightheartheribaldcursingoftheruffianscoming todemandtheSeamlessTunicfrom him.Forthatwaswhatthemonks hadlefttohiscare.Theinnertunic thatChristhadwornonearth,andfor whichthesoldiershadcastlotsatthe footoftheCrossonCalvary.Made ofwool,theclothingofthepoor,seamlessanddyedareddishhue,itwas markedwithbloodstains fromthe laceratedbodyofChrist.
Lookingattherelic,M.Ozetmight haverememberedthewordsofSt. John:"Thenthesoldiers,afterthey hadcrucifiedHim,tookHisgarments (andtheymadefourparts,toevery soldierapart,castinglotsuponthem whateverymanshouldtake),andalso Histunic.Nowthetunicwaswithout seam,wovenfromthetopthroughout. Theysaidthentooneanother:letus notcutit,butletuscastlotsuponit, whoseitshallbe;thatthewordmight befulfilledwhichwasspokenbythe Prophet:TheyhavepartedMygarmentsamongthem,anduponMyvesturetheyhavecastlots.Andthesoldiersindeeddidthesethings."
"Letusnotcutit":fornearlyeighteenhundredyearsthetunic,woven seamlessbythehandsofMary,had beenpreservedintact.ButM.Ozet wasfrantic.Itseemedtheonlything todo,so,hecutit.Cutitintoseveralpieces,sometogivetohisfaithful friends,sometoburyinhisgarden.

Notallthefragmentswererecovered, butthemajorportionoftherelicisstill preserved.Whenputtogetherthe piecesformtheupperpartofthegarment:theshouldersandtheupper partofthesleeves,aportionofthe front,andaconsiderableportionofthe back.Fiftyyearsagothesepieces werefixedontoaclothofveryfine textureandalmostthesamecolouras theTunicitself,but,toavoidconfusion,ofanentirelydifferenttissue.The colourisareddishbrown.Parcot showedin1934thatitwasnotdyed withanimalpurple,whichwasused forcolouringthegarmentsoftherich, butwithabrownishvegetabledye whichwomenofthepoorerclassespreparedthemselves,asdoubtlessdid Mary. Thetunicwasnotwashedorcleaned afterthePassion,asneitherwasthe ShroudofTurin.Theshroudwasthe propertyofJosephofArimathea,but therelativesofexecutedcriminalshad therighttopurchasethegarmentsof theslain,whichwouldexplainhowthe tunicpassedoutofthepossessionof theguardatCalvary.
Manyperhapsmightbeastonishedto knowthatsomanyrelicsofChristare stillinexistence.Others,perhaps, thattherearesofew.Thethreenails usedinthecrucifixion,agreatpart ofthetitleofthecross,thebasisofthe crownofthorns,muchofthethorn hushitself,fragmentsofthewoodof thecross,theshroudinwhichChrist

Moreover,theycoincidewiththe markingsverifiedontheShroudof Turin.Evidently,then,thistunicof Argenteuilwasworn'byChristnextto theskin,afterthescourgingandduringtheprocessiontoCalvary,where thesoldiersgambledforit.
Thelengthoftherelic,whenitwas entire,wasametreandforty-fivecentimetres.Itshistoryisinteresting,theessentialfactsarewell authenticated,andEmperors,Kings, Cardinals,scholarsandfaithful havehelditinthehighestveneration throughout.Wovenonasimple, primitivemachine,withthewarpand woofofthesamefinewool,conformable toJewishlaw,itbringsusinthought backtothehideouspassionoftheOne whoworeit,backthroughthoseyears ofteaching,backtothehomeinNazareth,thecarpenter'sshop,Andthepictureofawomansittingatanold-world weaver,makingatunicforherSon herSon.

Thefollowinglettertothemembers oftheThirdOrderofSt.Francis,in Perth,comesfromapriestwhowas formerlyinWesternAustralia,andis nowaFranciscanMissionaryinthe BahamasIslands.Itcontainsagrippingaccountofahurricanewhichrecentlydevastatedtheislands:AUaroundusto-dayweseethe Divinepunishmentonthisworldfor ignoringGodandtransgressingHis lawsandcommandments-thevialof thewrathoftheLambispouredout andthereseemstobenocornerofthe earthtoescapebearingitsshareofthe generalworldtribulation.Soherein theseseeminglypeacefulislands.We havehadafivemonths'droughton CatIsland,andafterallthehardwork ofthepeopleearlyintheyearofcuttingdownbush,burningoff,planting andweeding,therewasnocorntobe gatheredinAugust,sofoodwasvery scarce.Andthen,theSundaybefore last,October5,theislandwassmitten withtheworstandmostviolenthurricanewithinlivingmemory.Inthe morningitwasalovelypanoramaof verdantgreenandprettyshrubs;in theeveningitwasadrearywilderness.Heapsofstoneandshattered timberandscatteredthatchingwhere thelittlehomesstood;uprootedtrees lyingacrosstheroads;thechurches, governmentbuildingsandschoolsunroofed.AnavenueofstatelyCasuarubatrees,calledhere"Australian Pines,"somefiftyfeethigh,fringed theroadalongtheseashore,mostof themwereblowndown.Cocoanuts, oranges,limesandotherfruitlayscatteredonthegroundbythebroken trunksofthetrees.Nearlyallthe bananatreesweredestroyed.Inmanyofthesettlements,numbersofthe peoplehavelosttheirsmallstoreof food,theirclothing,theirbedsand furniture,andeverylittlethingthey had.TwooftheCatIslandsmall sailingsloopsreturningfromNassau werelostwithalltheirpassengersand crewinsightoftheshore,andthree moreweredrivenashoreandwrecked, butthepeoplesaved.Treesand busheshavetheirremainingbranches strippedbareofleavesandthelandscapehasturnedfromgreentobrown andhastheappearanceofhavingbeen burned.
ThisislandandSanSalvadorhad itsworst,thenitpassedontoFlorida anddiedoutthere.Iandmylittle congregationofCatholic"followers" sufferedabadlossandsetbackin havingtheroofblownoffournew church,andonegableendblowndown. Wehadonlyjustfinishedittheweek before.Itwasallstronglyconstructed,buttherewerenodoorsorshutterstothewindows,sothewindjust blewinandliftedthewholeroof,

WehadfirstwarningofthehurricaneonSaturdayafternoon,received onthewirelessattheCommissioner's office,thatthestormwasthenat TurksIsland,400milessouth-east,and travellingthisway:acycloneislikea whirlwind,itsvelocitybeinginitsrevolvingmovement.However,asthe weatherseemedclearinguponSundaymorning,peoplethoughtthestorm hadchangeditscourseandgonemore tothewestward.Idescendedthe hillandwalkedthroughthewinding androckybushtracktoFreetownand celebratedHolyMassasusual.On myreturnjourneyheavycloudswere rollingupandthewindrisng-whenI reachedthelastbitofsteepclimbup "TheWayoftheCross,"Ihadtocling ontothesteps,andwhenIcouldn't standuprightinthewind-howeverit wasnothingasyet!Itwasas muchasIcoulddotopullthedoor openandgetinsidetheHermitage.I hadbarricadeduptheshuttersofthe windowsthepreviousevening.Ihad nosoonerenteredthanthehurricane burstontheisland-rainwhirledlike cloudsofsteam,andtherewasaterrificcontinuousroar-youcouldnot hearyourselfspeak,anditseemed (onlyfancy,Isuppose!)asifthevery rockofthehillitselfvibratedand shook.Ihadnofearwhateverfor mylittlehouse,asitisaveritable fortressbuiltfortheseemergencies withroofentirelyofstone.Having noglasswindowsbutonlywooden shutters,itwasquitedarkinside,soI litthelampandthenthefireand madesomecoffeeandhadmybreakfast.ThenIcrawledthroughthe speciallittlehurricaneholeandtrapdoorunderthevestmentpress,into theoratorytoprayforthepoorpeopledownbelowinthesettlement-and tosaymyOffice.Acyclonegoes roundthereversewaytoaclock.

However,Catholicparticipationin publiclifeisasourceofmainsinconformitywiththeresponsibilities,and laymenaregenerallypreferablefor politicalposts,astheyplacelessresponsibilityontheChurch.Theparticipationoftheclergyinpubliclife wasregulatedbyCanonLaw,andin ourdaysweneverseeaBishopaccept apostofSenatororDeputy.
Thesetwodefinitionsof"Political Catholicism"donotexactlyconform tothepopularopinionofthisterm; for,accordingtosomepeople,thepriest shouldclosehimselfintheChurch,or atleastinthesacristyheshouldadministertheSacraments,organiseprocessions,celebratethereligiousoffices, enjoinonthefaithfulanabsoluteobediencetoalllaws,evenifthesedestroy man'ssacredrights.Inaword,he shouldrenouncethemissionconfided tohimbyChristofpreachingthe Gospel,vindicatingmoralityandtruth andorganisingthefaithfulinCatholic Action.Ifheleavesthisatmosphere ofincenseandperfumetowhichthey haverelegatedhim,ifinChrist'sName hedefendstherightanddutyofformingtheconsciencesofthefaithful,if hedirectstheirspirituallifeinallits forms,thatis,theirapostolateamong allclassesofthepopulation,andif insodoinghemustnecessarilyoppose hisadversariesideaoftheChurch's mission,theywillimmediatelyaccuse himofPoliticalCatholicism.

Inconcluding,letusrecallbrieflythe reasonsofJesusChrist'sdeath:
1.HepreachedobediencetoCaesar, practisedit,paidHistaxesfaithfully, andwasalwaysapeacefulCitizen.
2.Hepreachedobediencetothose "occupyingthechairofMoses,"thatis, theScribesandPharisees,butHedid notsharetheirpoliticalaspirations;He re-established,withHis'divineauthority,thedivinelawcorruptedbythem; HepreachedtheKingdomofGod.
3.Hepreachedthespiritual"KingdomofGod,"whichextendsbeyondall races,andatthesametimeHecommandedHisownto"rendertoCaesar thethingswhichareCaesar's,"tobe humble,peacefulcitizensofearth.
4.Hewasaccusedofapoliticalcrime -ofhavingstirredupthepeople,and forbiddingtopaytributetoCaesar.
Thus,inrecentterminology,Jesus Christwouldhavebeenthefirst"politicalCatholic."ThatiswhyHewas crucified!

Averyseriousmistakeofourdayis toidentifypoliticswithreligion.We haveheardofCatholicsforming°pinions-orratherpoliticalpassions-and tryingtojustifythemin"choosing" fromtheScriptures,Theology,andPontificalEncyclicals,phraseswhichseem toagreewiththeirpointofview.They willinglyexaggerateoneaspectofthe doctrineoftheChurchtothedetrimentofthewhole,andviolentlycriticisetheirBishops,andeventheHoly See.Thatistheoriginofthecontradictoryandfantasticaccusations broughtagainsttheHierarchyandthe Vatican.CatholicswhoopenlycontradicttheHierarchyintheirowncountry orwhotrytosetoneBishopagainst another,whofailintherespectand obedienceduetotheHolySee,areany-
