MyDearpeople,Weliveintremendousdaysforour country.Thefrontiersofourdefence againstaruthlessaggressionhavebeen torcedback,back-wearefighting grimly,desperately,butconfidently, knowingthatvitalreinforcementsare ontheway.Wearefightingfornational survivalagainstafoewhogivesno quarter.Ourcivilianpopulationis beingmarshalledinciviliandefence andA.R.P.Eachoneofusisasked togivewhathehastothenationin herhourofneed.Andgladlyshould wegive. Weareasked,inaword,toputfirst thingsfirst.ButIwonderifwerealisejustwhatthatmeans putting firstthingsfirst!WeareaChristian nation.Webelieveinthedivinityof Christ.Verygood!IfChristwas Godwalkingthisearthasaman,then Hiswordsmusthaveanall-timesignificance.AndtheliturgyoftheChristianChurchkeepsbeforeusthroughouttheyeartheesseptialsofthatsynthesisoftruthsthatChristcameon earthtorevealtous.

Webeginto-daywhatisknownas theLentencycle.Unfortunately,Lent haslostitssignificanceamongstthe vastmajorityofourAustralianpeopleThatisnotonlyapity-itisa tragedy.Thetragedyofapeoplewho foroveragenerationnowhavesquanderedtheirbirthright,havesquandered evenlifeitself.Yes,squanderedlife inthewombandfrustratedlifeatits source.Itisthetragedyofapeople whoacknowledgenorightoftheBlessedTrinity-notevenGod'sexclusive rightoverlifeanddeath.Itisthe tragedyofapeoplewhorefusetogive toGodwhatHehaseverdemanded ofmankindofwhateverraceornation: sacrifice. Itisthetragedyofanationwho willgivetoCaesarthethingsthatare Caesars,butnottoGodthethingsthat areGod's whowilleducatetherisinggenerationsinaGodlessphilosophy

ofmaterialism,knowingnothingof ChristorHisteaching,knowingnothi ofthegreatestfactofhistory-thef' ofChrist,ofHislifeinPalestine, HisDeathandResurrection.Free, seculareducationhasfailed-ithas givenusforthegreaterpartaGodless youth ayouthtowhomthewords ofChristarestrange,unheardof,and fromwhomthedivineultimatumon thenecessityofpenanceinourlives drawsachildishsniggerorasophisticatedsneer.Andmoreover,theyouth ofto-dayarebuttheproductsoftheir homes,andwheretheyarenot-then thehomehasfailed,astoooftenIthas.

Yetperhapsatnootherperiodofour nationalhistoryhastheChristian ChurchinherliturgicalperiodofLent somuchtoteachus onthatvery point.IftherewasonethingChrist insistedupon,itwasthenecessityof penance.Andifthereisonethingwe, asanation,haveforgotten,itisjust that-thenecessityofpenance,and thefactthatweneededtoberedeemed.

ItisdifficultforaChristianmanor womantolookonthiswarotherthan asascourgeoftheTrinity-injustretributionfortheapostasyofthenations andofthemasses.Christhasbeen unceremoniously,evensavagely,driven frominternationalandfrompublic morality.Thecrucifixhasbeentorn fromthewallsofourschools,yes,even hereinAustralia,andwithithasgone thesanctityofloveandtheindissolubilityofmarriage,theinviolableright tolifeoftheunbornchild,andtheprotectionanddevelopmentofadolescence bytheparentsofthenationandby theStateitself.

Goneisrespectforallauthority,unfulfilledthedutyofcensoringpornographicfilth,andlittleconcernis shownoveratheisticpropagandainan allegedlyChristianComonwealth.

Therealmorale,therealstandardof ouryoungmanhoodiseloquentlyex-

pressedintheForcesoftheKing.Our youngmen,andwhynotsayit,are beingutterlydemoralisedincamplife whilsttheyarebeingtrainedtofight "indefenceofChristianity."

Yetallthisislittletobewonderedat. Thesepresentgenerationsarebutthe floweringofournationalculture.If thatsoundsdamning,itismeantto. Forwecanstillgoonfromdaytoclay socompletelyobliviousofwhereweare heading,andoftheparamountneedof prayerinthepresentemergency.

TheChristwehaverejected,said FatherLalor,willnothearourprayer ofsupplicationunlesswemanifestour sinceritybypenance.Thenecessity ofpenancewasoneofthethingsthat Godbecamemantoteachus.But asanationweareproudto-day.We havebeenlivinginafool'sparadisepolitically,sociallyandspiritually.It hasgonetoourheads.Wespeakof theenemy'sdisregardforhumanlifewe,bledwhitethroughcontraception andthemurderoftheunbornchild. Onlybyfacingrealitieswillweachieve aresurrection,throughthebloodand sweatofwar,ofournation-oldand blasewhilstyetitisyoung.

ThatisthewarningoftheLenten Liturgywhichcommencesto-day.It isthespiritofthisseasonofpenance thatmatters-andweshouldcarryit onthroughouttheyear,thatthiselementofpenancemightbecomepartof ourlife,always.Eachoneofuscan makeitwhatwewill,buteachoneof usshouldrememberthisyearjustwhat dependsonthisspiritofpenancevoluntarilyaccepted.Andbetterthatby farthanapenanceinvoluntarilyenforced,fromwhichGoddeliverus!

Inanycase,IrejoiceintheLordthat hedidnottellusthattheScriptures hadthreateneduswewouldalwayshavethepoorwithus. Therewasoneothermemorableutteranceinthesameaddress.Lord Halifaxsaid:"Onlytwothingscanredeemthetragiccost.Firstly,weare comingtoseethathappinessdoesnot dependonmaterialthings;secondly, wearecomingtoattachanewmeaning totheoldquestion,"Whatshallitprofitamanifhegainthewholeworld andlosehisownsoul?"Thefirstpostulateistobeapplied,presumably,to friendDivesprimarily.Butithasits applicationalsotoLazarus,whose nameislegion.Themassesofindustrial poorwhocharacterisethisagehave fewenough"materialthings,"and,God knows,theyknowlittleenoughabout happiness.ButtheirsisnotavoluntarypovertyacceptedinaChristian spirit.Poverty,ofamostdegraded

Thelate(Sirs.Marwick,second daughterofthelateMr.andMrs.A. G.Prunster,was'bornatGuildford72 yearsago.Shewaseducatedbythe SistersofMercy,whohaveeverbeen proudtoclaimherasanex-pupiland towhomshehasbeenadevotedfriend. Attheageof19shevisitedYork, whereshemetthelateMr.William Marwick,whomshemarriedin1891, andwhopredeceasedher40yearsago. Afamilyofthreesonsandthreedaughterswasaresultoftheunion.The eldest,Mamie,andJackdiedininfancy.Theremainingmembersofthe familyare:Lucy(Mrs.PercyHicks), ofKalgoorlie;Dolly(Mrs.Martin),of Northam;W.J.(Bill),andS.J. Themorningofeachdaywasdevotedprincipallytoreligiousinstructionandchoirpractice.Theafternoonwasdevotedmainlytorecreation, andthechildrenwereaccompanied tothebeacheachdaybytheSisters.

TheworkoftheSchoolfounditsculminationintheadmissionofsomany ofthechildrentothereceptionofthe Sacraments.OnFriday,January9, tenreceivedHolyCommunionforthe firsttime,havingmadetheirfirstconfessionthepreviousday.Finally,on theSaturdaymorning,HisLordship BishopO'CollinsconferredtheSacramentofConfirmationtonineteenchildrenintheConventChapel.Atthe conclusionofashortinstruction,His Lordship,assistedbyVeryRev.Father Gallagher,Adm,.,administeredthis augustSacramenttothosepresented. Ignoringthedangerfromflamesand ofcollapsingwalls,Rev.FatherPatrickJ.Reeves,ofSt.Patrick's,Huddersfield,enteredaburningfactory, mountedaladdertothesecondfloor, andgaveconditionalAbsolutionto whoeveramongthevictimsmighthave beenalive,saystheLondon"Catholic Times."Thewallscollapsedwhenhe returnedtothestreet.

Forty-sevenworkers,manyofthem girls,losttheirlivesintheblaze.As heclimbedtheladder,FatherReeves couldseethe'bodiesofthetrapped people.Hesawthattherewerenone whomhecouldreach.Thewallswere collapsingwhenhereturnedtothe street.

Later,whenthebodieswerebeing takenfromtheguttedbuildingon stretchers,hewentamongtherelatives comfortingthem.

FatherReevesfirsthurriedtothe hospitalonbeingtoldofthefire,and itwasthreehourslaterwhenhereachedthesmoulderingfactory.

Toapressmanhesaid:"Onbeing informedbyafiremanthattherewas aremoteprdbabilitythatsomeofthe

Itishearteningindeedtonotethepracticalthoroughnessthat markedthediscussionsattherecentDiocesanTeachers'Conference.Anaspectofthisannualconvention,thathasgrownincreasinglyproductiveofideasandinspiration.istheopenforum followingeachofthecarefullypreparedpapers.Thisexchange ofviewsandexperiencesofthemanyteacherspresentisnotonly ofinteresttoall,butdefinitelyofpracticalbenefit.

Thepaperon"ApostlesofTo-morrow-CatholicActioninthe Schools,"readbyFatherHussey,isbeingreprintedincurrent issuesof"TheRecord,"andwecannotbuturgethosewhomit mostdirectlyconcernstostudycarefullyandsympatheticallythe varioussuggestionssubmitted.

InotherStatesoutstandingsuccesshasattendedtheefforts ofteachersexperimentingonthelinesrecommendedbyFather Hussey.Theactivityitself,thoughofsecondaryimportance,is inmanycasesreallyremarkable.Thethree-foldfieldofapostalate-thehome,theschool,andtheparish-offersabundantscope. Yetmorecreditable,andmoreimportantstill,istheformation beingachievedthroughthisveryactivity.Andthatistheacid test.Theactivityisbutthemeansusedinthisformationof youngapostles,whichistheaimofallCatholicActionendeavour intheschools.

Wemustteachouryouthtoaccepttheapostolateasanecessary,integratingactivityofCatholiclife.Tolookononenot engagedinsomeformofapostolateorother,asnotlivingthefull Catholiclife.TheymustcometoregardthetermsCatholicand apostleassynonymous.Maybeitsoundsalittleaxiomatic,but verytrue,however,thatunlesstheyouthofto-morrowareapostlesitisdoubtfuliftheywillevenretaintheirfaith.

Experienceseemstoprovethatitisnotsomuchwhatis taughtinmattersoffaith,butratherhowitistaught,thatreally countsinthelongrun.Thereisadifferencebetweenlearning thefaith,andactuallyLIVINGthefaith.Livingiteverymomentofourday,intensely,enthusiastically.Itisonethingto knowthingsbyroteandanothertorealisethem,insuchfashion thattheycolourourwholeattitudetowardslife,andtheevents andexperiencesthatmakeupthedramaofourwakinghours. This,ourchildrenmustlearntodo,andnomoresuccessfulmethod ofinstillingthisconceptoftheirfaithasadynamicthingintheir lives,canwesuggestthantheapostolate.

OfHisverynatureChristwasanapostle-"theOnesent"from theTriuneGodtomankind.Ifthenouryoutharetobecome "otherChrists,"they,too,mustbecomeapostles.AstheHoly Fatherhasputit:"EveryChristianisanapostle."orshouldbe Sothat,toknowtheirfaith,tolivetheirfaith,andtolovetheir faith,theyoungmenandyoungwomenofto-morrowpassing throughourschoolsto-day,mustbeformedthroughthespiritand activityoftheirapostolateinto"otherChrists."

\Yefeeljustifiedinhopingthat.bigthingswilleventuatefrom thediscussionsonthesesubjectsattherecentTeachers'Conference.Thosetakingpartweregivenmuchfoodforthought,and manyhelpfulsuggestionswithwhichtheymightexperiment.Attendantproblemsareseeninconsiderablylessmagnitudewhen oncetheyaretackled.Again,theapostolateopensupanew fieldofactivityandanewmethodofformation.Whereithas beentriedithasprovedeminentlysuccessful.andtheLegionof Mary,inparticular,istobecongratulatedontheimagination,on theonehand,andthepracticalthoroughness,ontheother,with whichithasgrappledwiththeproblemelsewhere.Thesystem oftheLegionisideallysuitedtothisimportantsphereofCatholic Action;itsadaptabilityandinspirationalforcearecharacteristic, ,itsresultsremarkable.

ThelogicalplaceforCatholicActiontobeginisintheschool, anditishightimetheaxewaslaidtotherootofthetree.The wholequestionisfulloflatentpossibilities.andthediscussionswe lizo.rereferredtodoallowustolookforwardtofar-reachingdeelopmentsinourmethodsofformingtheApostlesofTo-morrow.

Thewordsweheatfromthepriestashemarksourforehead withashesnext'Wednesday,areamuch-neededreminderthat deathisanever-presentreality.Justwhenitwillcometoyou andtomeweknownot.Itmaybeunexpected-itoftenis.It maycomeinaflash.Theroadaccidentswereadofinthedaily pressshoulddrivethislessonhome.Thepossibilityofenemy airactivityinthenearfuture,threateningyourlifeandmine,is perhapsmorethananyotherfactorresponsibleforamoreacute awarenessofthepossibilityofdeath.

Catholicsarerealists,andtheycantalkaboutthesethings. Itisneithermorbid,cowardlynordefeatisttodoso.Ittakesa lotoffaith,alotofhope,andalotofcouragetofacetheissueof deathsquarely.Ittakesanunflinchingrealismtokeepitever beforeourmind,andtorefusetothinkaboutitisnotonlycowardlybutun-Christian.Christspokeofitoften.Sodoesthe Churchinherliturgy,andsometimesverybluntlytoo."Rememberman,thouartbutdust,anduntodustthoushaltreturn."That isall.Laconic,fateful.

Inthesegrimdays,whenthecountryispreparingforthe worstandhopingforthebest,whenthecivilianpopulationisorganised,moreorlesssatisfactorily,underA.R.P..withthecontinualpossibilityofeventstakingtheunexpectedturnthathas madethiswarfromthebeginningsounlikeanyother,wehave reasontobeunspeakablygratefulforthequietcourageandtrust thatnothingbutourfaithcouldinspireinus.Andthatissomethingthatnothingcantakefromus,thatnothingonearthshould evenshake.

Lookingfactsinthefacemaytakecourage.butinthe Eucharistwehavethesourceofallcourage.Iftheashesonour foreheadsremindusofdeath,theyremindus.too,thatwehave beenredeemed.Iftheyremindusofapassiontobeundergone withChrist,theyremindus.alsothatwithHim,throughtheEu charist.wemayshareHisResurrection-andthat,asanation,too.

Thequestionwhichnowarisesus: Intheorganisationofthesecampaign', shouldweworkthroughselectedorvolunteergroups,orshouldweendeavour tomaketheclassestheunitsofaction?

Itwouldbeprematureandfoolishto attempttoimposeanylarge-scaleCatholicActionmovementontheschools atthisstage.Suchamovementshould growgraduallyandfromwithin. Isuggestthatthisyearshouldbeone ofexperimentation.Leteachschool makeitsownexperiments,andlater intheyearwecananalysetheresult, (TobeContinued.)

ForBenedictionisjustthat-earth's reflectionofheaven'sworship,expressinginanearthlywaytheliturgy ofheaven.Thepriestrepresentsthe eldersbeforethethrone,andisclothed astheyare,inwhiterobes.Thecurlingcloudofincenserepresentsasit doesinheaventheaspirationsoflove andadorationofthosepresentbefore theglorifiedChrist.

Atthe"Veneremurcernui"webow ourheadsineucharisticadoration,as dothehostsofheaven,andwhenwe havethusexpressedourloveforGod throughChrist,soamomentlaterHe returnsthroughChristthatexpression ofourlove.HeasksHispriestto raisethesacredbodyofHisSonand blessthekneelingcrowdbeforehim. Itistheself-sameblessingthatwe wouldreceivefromChristwereHeto appearinpersononthealtarsteps, andblessuswithHisownsacredhands. Thereweresevenofusintheparty; twoofthemhadbeenthere'before, sotheywereawaketotheWogs.We wentby"garry"fromthestationto KursaalHouse,wherewestayed.The tariffwas20piastresforbedandbreakfast,equalto5s.inAustralianmoney.

Apiastreisworth3d.Theplacewas veryclean,andthebreakfastwasvery good.Itwasrightintheheartofthe city,averytallbuildingrightona corner.Itwas,infact,agoodlandmarktofindourwayhome.

Thefirstthingwehadtofindwas thepayoffice,sothesevenofusall gotontheold"garry"againand awaywewent,Thatnightwespent lookingabouttoseewhatgoesonina nightinCairo.Wearoseabout7.30 onthefollowingmorning,hadbreakfast,andsetsailforourfirstmorning inCairoCity.

TheNativeBazaarwasthefirst placewedecidedtovisit.Herethey tryandsellyougoodsofallkindsand descriptions.Thepricetheyasked ofyouatfirstisveryhigh,butthey nearlyalwaysfinishupsellingitfor abouthalftheoriginalpriceWhile onourwayhomefromheretheProcessionoftheHolyra:petpassedus. Thisseemedtobeabgeventwith thepeopleinCairo,asthestreetswere linedforhourswaitingforittopass. Itonlyoccursonceayear.Thecrowd wentmad,everyonetryingtotouch it.AfterthiswewenttotheEmpire ServiceClubtohavedinner.

TheGiziraRaceswereoninthe afternoon,sowedecidedtogooutand havealookatthem.ThisClubis runasasportsclub,theGiziraSports Club.Thereisagolfcourseinthe middleofthetrack,andtenniscourts andcricketfield,too.Itseemedfunny toseethemplayinggolfinthemiddle ofthecoursewhiletheraceswerein progress.ThereareafewAustralian jockeyshere,twoListersfromS.A., andJ.SharpefromW.A.W.Lister rodeonewinnerandasecond,while Sharpe'sbestwasathird.

IbackedtwowinnersandwonS5; itcameinveryhandy,too.They werethelasttwo,MarrassandShaheen,bothgreys.

SundaywewentouttothePyramids.Itcostsus25piastrestohire horsestogoouttothem.Alltogethertherearenineofthem.The largestis475feethigh.Weclimbed righttothetopandthegoingwas prettyhard,butwemadethegrade.

AllthePyramidsarebuiltfacing north.WhileinsidetheGreatPyramidafirebrokeout,thefirstfirein thePyramidsfor5,000years.Itcovers anareaofabout13acres.Theyestimatethatthereisenoughstonein thisPyramidtobuildhousestoaccommodateapopulationof120,000 people.NearthePyramidsisthe Sphinx,arecumbentcolossallionwith ahumanhead.Onthewayhomewe visitedtheZoologicalGardensandsaw alltheanimalsbeingfed.Wealso passedanArabfuneral;theywere carryingthedeadpersononabierto theburyingground.Sundaynight wewenttothepicturesatKursaal Theatre.

OnMondaymorningwevisitedthe Mosques.TheCitadelwasbuiltby MohammedAli.Fromhereyoucan obtainasplendidviewofthecity.At thefootoftheCitadelistheMosqueof SultanHasam;itisover800yearsold, andhasninedomes.Thecarpetson thefloorarethesamepatternasthe glassinthedomes.Wealsovisited theMosqueofElAzhar.Atallthese placestheurgersareatwork;they "bite"youeverywhereyougo.

Mondayafternoonwasspentwalkingaroundthecity,whileonMonday nightwedidtherounds,lookingatthe CabaretsandthenightlifeofCairo.

TuesdaywewentouttotheoldCairo City.Thispartofthecityhasits ownpeculiarinterest.TheoldCoptic Churchiswhere,accordingtotradition,theHolyFamilydweltforawhile inEgypt.HerealsoistheoldMosqueofAmr.Thischurchiscalled theChurchofAluSargha.AtMetariaisto'beseentheTreeoftheHoly Virgin,alsoconnectedwiththeHoly FamilywhileinEgypt.Wetooka snapofwhereMoseswasfoundinthe bullrushesintheGardenPharoah. AttheWaxMuseumwhichwevisitedintheafternoon,arethefiguresof thekingsandqueensandalltheold headsofEgypt.Theyaredoneup wellandlookverygood.Infacta manusedtowalkoutofoneroom intoanother,andhewouldhaveto looktwicetoseeiftheywererealor

Wednesdaywewentouttoseethe DeltaBarrage.TheBarrageisahuge structurebuiltacrosstheNile.The gardenshereareverybeautiful.Here alsoistheMusuemofModels,containingmodelsofdams,barrages, locks,regulators,andallirrigation worksinEgypt.Youcanhireatrol leyandtheypushyouaround;thiswe thoughtwasafunnyturn.Wednesdayafternoonwasspentseeingthe MuseumofHygiene,whichwasbuilt in1927.Thisistheonlymuseumof itskindintheworld.Itcontains numerousmodelsrepresentingthe structureofthehumanbody,thedifferentorgans,morbids,andthemethodsofpreventingdiseases.Thereis nothingconnectedwiththehuman bodythatitdon'tshow.Wednesday nightwewenttoseetheshowcalled "ThatHamiltonWoman;"thiswasan extragoodshow.

Archbishop'sTribute. HisGracetheArchbishopsaidthat MonsignorMoloneywasaproudman thatday,andwithgoodreason.The beautifulnewbuildingwasinkeeping withtheotherbuildingsoftheparish. Itwasworthyofthepurposeforwhich ithadbeenerected.Itwasamodern schoolwithwell-ventilatedandwelllightedclassrooms.Itmetthemost rigiddemandsofmoderneducational requirements.HeheartilycongratulatedMonsignorMoloneyandallassociatedwithhiminthework.Monsignorhadplannedthebuildingofthe schoolafewyearsago,buthisplans hadmiscarried.Intheinscrutable waysofProvidencehehadbeenstruck downwithaseriousillness,which threatenedatonetimetoprovefatal. liehad,however,madeahappyrecovery,andHisGracehopedhewouldbe sparedformanyyearstocontinuehis

goodwork.Hehaddesignedand supervisedthebuilding,hadactedthe partofplumber,carpenter,andtiler. He(theArchbishop)wasdeeplygratefultoMonsignorMoloneyforthesplendidbuildingsofLeedervilleandforhis helpinconnectionwithbuildingactivityinotherpartsoftheArchdiocese. Hehopedhewouldenjoyacontinu-

terialsweresourgentlyrequiredfor wareffort.Itwasimperativethat theworkoftheChurchshouldgoon inpeaceorinwar.Hencepermission hadbeensoughtinCanberraforthe necessaryexpenditure,andwhenthe circumstanceshadbeenexplained,the permissionwasreadilygranted.

Misunderstanding. Christianeducationmustgoonif wearetoprepareforpost-warreconstruction.Forifitistomeananything,itmustmeanthatreligiouseducationmustgetitsrightfulplaceinthe counselsofthenations,whereithad

werebeing"sectional,"thentheword hadlostitsoriginalmeaning.

HeroismofReligiousTeachers. Whetherwereceivedsupportoropposition,however,theworkofChristianeducationmustcontinue.Init wehadthesupportofthosemagnificentreligiousmenandwomentowhom weowedanincalculabledebtofgratitude.Theheroismofoursoldiers abroadwasrightlyadmitted,butthere wereheroesinourmidst-themembers oftheteachingOrdersofmenand women-whoseheroismwasscarcely recognised.Theyweredevotingtheir lives,theirenergies,andtalentstothe nobleworkoftrainingyoungAustralianstobeChristiancitizens.They receivednoassistancefromthe State,despitethefactthatthey werehelpingtheState.Ifthey

miceofgoodhealthandmanyyearsas RectorIrremovableofLeedlerville. MonsignorMoloneyhadnursedthe parishthroughitsearlyyears,andit wassecondtononebothspiritually andtemporally.

weretodonsecularattireandgo oftheirwork.Theybuild,notmerelywiththebrickofstatelybuildings, butfirmlyandenduringlyinthesouls ofourrace.Hewasgladtohave theopportunityofpayingapublictributetothemagnificentworkthathas been,is,andwillbedoneinourCatholicschools. BrotherConlonsaidthatthescheme wouldthrowabigresponsibilityonthe Brothers,theparish,andMonsignor Moloney.TheBrothershadprovided anefficientstaff.Theyhadtobuild upareputation,andtofinanceabig primaryandsecondaryschool.They hadaccomplishedsimilarworkinother States,andhewasconfidentthey woulddothesamehere.HehadconfidenceintheArchbishop,whohad beenamosthelpfulandgenerous friend.MonsignorMoloneyhaddone marvellouswork.Whenhecameto Leederville,hehadawoodenchurch andnopresbytery.Hehadbuiltone ofthefinestchurchesintheWest,secondonlytotheCathedral;acomfortablepresbyteryforhispriests,aConvent,andup-to-dateschoolforgirls, andahall.TheBoys'Collegewas suitableineveryrespect.ItcomprisedaresidencefortheBrothers,

eightclassroomssecondtononeinany State,sixbeinglightedfromthesouth. Itwouldaccommodateover300boys. Yes,thereisnodoubtthatthereis aglamouraboutSt.Paul.Ourgeneralimpressionofhimasafascinating characteriswellfounded.Butthat isnotthewholepicture.Theintensityofhismind,thedashingeventfulnessofhislifemustnotbeallowed toobscurecertainotherpointsweneed toconsiderifwewouldunderstand whatkindofmanwasPaul. UnderthespellofSt.Paul'spersonal magnetism,andthinkingonlyofthe wondersheaccomplished,weareinclinedtopicturehimasamanofmagnificentphysique,ofcommandingpresence,ofperfectaddress.Suchan impressionisnotaccurate.Paulwas notarobustman.Hehadtoface

Inagrippingandoftquotedpassage inoneofhislettersPaullistsout someofthesufferingshewent through:"FromtheJewsfivetimes didIreceivefortystripessaveone, thricewasIscourged,oncewasI stoned,thricewasIshipwrecked,a nightandadayhaveIpassedinthe depthsofthesea;injourneyings often,inperilsfromrivers,perilsfrom robbers,perilsfrommineownnation, perilsfromtheheathen,perilsincity, perilsinwilderness,perilsinthesea, perilsfromfalsebrethren:inlabour andtoil,inwatchingsoften,inhunger andthirst,infastingsoften,incold andnakedness. ."

Weinevitablyfeelaswereadthat listthatthemanwhohasgone throughsuchsufferingsisonaplane abovetherestofus;wefeelhecan scarcelybehuman,butthathemust beakindofpurespirit,livingahigher lifethanours.Itiswrongtoimagine thatPaulwasnotthoroughlyhuman. Heissoappealingbecauseheisso human.He,likeothermen,knew whattemptationis;hehadtastedit. Hefeltinhimselfthedragof'fallen naturetowardssin,andknewwhat wretchednesswouldbehisbutforthe graceofGod:"WhatIwishIperform not,butwhatIhatetodo. UnhappymanthatIam!Whowilldelivermefromthebodyofthisdeath? ThanksbetoGodthroughourLord JesusChrist!"

St.PaultellstheCorinthians(withoutmentioningitsprecisenature)ofa specialtemptation,overandabovethe ordinarysinfultrendoftheflesh "Therewasgivenme,"hesays,"a thorninmyflesh,anangelofSatanto buffetme.AboutthisdidIbeseech

theLordthatitmightdepartfromme. Andhehathsaidtome,'Mygraceis sufficientforthee,forstrengthismade perfectininfirmity.'"

St.Paulthereforeknewtemptation, knewtoothathiswatchagainstit mustbeunremitting.Hiscareof others'soulsmustnotlullhimintoa specioussecurity.Hewasfearfullest hebecome,asitwere,asignpostpointingheaventoothers,andnotgetting therehimself.So,totheendofhis life,hemortifiedhisbody:"Ibruise mybodyandbringitintobondage, lesthaplyafterbeingheraldtootherI myselfbecomedisqualified."(Toappreciatethefullimportofthesewords oneneedstorecallthatintheIsthmiangamestowhichSt.Paul,inthe context,isreferring,the'herald'was akindofreferee,amostimportant man.Furtheroneneedstoknow thatatthetimehewaswritingthe

Greekwordfor'herald'hadcometo mean'preacher').

ItistoSt.Paul'slettersthatwe mustturntoconvinceourselveshow humanhewas,howsensitive,howresponsive.Studyofthemrevealsthe loveablenessofhisnature.Oncewe knowhisletterswecanneverthink ofhimascoldanddistant,without sympathyforhumanwaywardness. Justponderonafewpassagestaken atrandom.

"Godismywitness,howIyearnfor youallintheheartofChristJesus'' (PhilippiansI.8.).

"Forinmuchafflictionandanguish ofheartIwrotetoyou,withmany tears;notthatyemightbegrieved. butthatyemightknowtheloveI bearsoabundantlytowardsyou" (IICorinth,11.4).

Ararebeautyofcharacter,tact,generosity-thesethingsareshownabundantlyintheEpistletoPhilemon. Onesimus,aslave,hascommittedthe seriousoffenceofdesertinghismaster, Philemon,Paul'sfriend.Therunaway comesunderPaul'sinfluence.Paul pleadseloquentlyforforgivenesswith theinjuredmaster.Withgreatdelicacyheasksthisfavourforthesake oftheirdeepfriendship:"Iplead,as, whatIam,Paul,anoldman,andnow besidesaprisonerforChristJesus.I pleadwiththeeforthismychild. Yea,brother,letmehavethisprofit fromtheeintheLord;cheermyheart inChrist."Onewouldhavetohave aheartofsteeltoresistSt.Paul.

usabalancedportraitofSt.Paul,in allhisfascinationofcharacterandway oflife;inallhiswarmthofsympathy. Weknowhimforamanwhohassufferedtemptationandtriallikeother men.Heknewthebitternessoffailure.Wecanseethatinmanyinstancesofhislife,butinnonemore thanafterhecamebackfrom"smart" Athens.HecametoAthensmore carefullypreparedthantoanyother city.Heharanguedthehaughty,culturedAtheniansincarefully-weighed sentences.Buthewasgreetedwith jeersandtaunts.Thekinderelement inhisaudiencesaidcrushingly:"We shallheartheeaboutthisyetagain." Likeothermen,St.Paul(soweconjecture),smartedunderutterfailure. Yes,hewasveryhuman.

Howeverwehavenotyettouched thesecretofPaul'slife.Wedonot yetenterintothemindofthisman. Hewouldfeelthatsofarwehave mentionedlittlemorethanaccidentals abouthim.Whatisthekeytohis life?Really,itissimpletoanswer thisquestion.Fewliveshavebeen simplerthanPaul's;hislifehadonly oneaim,onetrend.Tounderstand Paul,youmustgoback,oncemore,to theonecrucialeventofhislife.

ItistheroadtoDamascus,the blindinglight,thevoice:

ThosewordschangedPaul'slife: theygaveitaneworientation.He hadflatteredhimselfthathehunted downonlyafewindividualsofahatefulsect.Nowhesuddenlyrealises thatinpersecutingthemheispersecutingthatChristwhohaddiedand lefttheearth.Inthosewordsspoken byChrist,Paulgainsawholetheology, getstheinspirationforhislifeand mission.Hecomestounderstand themysteryoftheMysticalBodyof Christ.Henceforthhislifehasbut oneaim-thebuildingup,inhimself andinothers,ofthebodyofChristSt.Paulwasamandominatedby onemaster-passion;hehadonegoalChrist,thelodestarofhislife.Thus, astheyearsmarchedby,hecouldproclaimtriumphantly: "Withme,toliveisChristandto dieisgain."

Heknewthatallhislongsufferings hadaroyalcurrency,becausehewas mysticallyonewithChrist: "WithChristIamnailedtothe cross."

Paulhaddecreased,thatChrist mightincrease.Thatwasthekeyto Paul'slife;thatwashisgoal;thatwas hisgloriousattainment: "ItisnolongerIthatlive,but Christlivethinme."
