TheBanningof"Ulysses"

(Severallistenershaveaskedmeto statetheCatholicattitudetoJames Joyce's"Ulysses,"andtocommenton theactionofMr.Harrisoninbanning thebook.Itishopedthatallenquirerswillbesatisfiedwiththefollowing generalstatement.)

Publicauthorityhastheright andthedutytosecurethewell-being ofitscitizens,topromotethegoodof thecommunityasawhole,topreserve themoralstandardswithoutwhich civilisationwouldlapseintosavagery andanarchy,andtofosterreligion whichisthenecessarybasisofmorals.

Ithas,therefore,boththerightand thedutytobanandproscribeeverythingwhichissubversiveofright orderandgoodmorals.Thisrighthas itsoriginintheverynatureofcivil society,theAuthorofwhichisGod. Andthisrightanddutymustbeexercisedinaccordancewtihthelawof God. Nooneintouchwithrealitieswill denythattherearebookswhichare subversiveofallorderanddecency. Noonewholivesintheworldofliving menandnotinthe(Gistsofdiscreditedrationalisttheorieswilldenythat therearepeoplewho,becauseoflack ofeducationormentalbalance,or both,areliabletocorruptionfrom suchsources.Suchbeingthecase, fewnormalpeoplewilldenythatsocietyhastherightandthedutyto protectitselfagainstsuchsubversive anddestructiveelements.

ASERVICETOTHEPUBLIC.

12)TheStatewhich,underpretext ofbeing"democratic,"allowsfullfreedomtotheagenciesofimmoralityand subversionisnotbeingdemocratic.It issimplyfailinginitsdutybothto theCreatorandtoitsowncitizens, betraying trust,andwritingthe sentenceofitsdestructiononthewall ofthefuture-perhapsofthenear future,

(3)Thetheorywhichwouldgive everyoneabsolutefreedomtodowhat hepleaseshasnobasisinreasonor reality,andissynonymouswithanarchy.Freedomisnottherightto dosimplywhatonepleases,butthe righttodowhatoneoughttodo. Whatoneoughttodoisdetermined bythelawofGod,therightsofothers andconsiderationsofthecommon good.Weoughttobefreetoattain ourfinaldestiny,andthereforewe mustbefreetoobservethelawof God,whichisthemeanstoitsattainment.Intheconcretewearefreeto doaswepleasewithinthegeneral frameworkofthelawofGodandthe commongood.Outsidethoselimits thereisnosuchthitukasmoralfreedom.

(4)"Ulysses"isagrosslyobscene andblasphemouswork:theproductof adiseasedandpervertedmind;breathingtheatmosphereofthesewerand thebrothelandofperversionswhich cannotbenamed.

Therefore,inbanningtheimportationof"Ulysses,"theMinisterwas simplydoinghisduty,and,thereby, doingaservicetothepeopleofAustralia.

(Incidentally,ournewspapersdiscreetlypassedoverthefactthatthe bookhaslongbeenbannedinEnglandandCanada.)

ALAMEARGUMENT.

(51Inreplytoanableletterby hopPitcher,publishedinitscolumns onWednesday,October15,the"SydneyMorningHerald"attemptedto answertheissuesraisedbytheBishop bycomparing"Ulysses"withsections oftheBible,andofthewordsofChau. cer,etc.,Shakespeare,etc.,stating thattheobjectionablepassagesin "Ulysses"formbutaninsignificant partofthetext,

Thereis,moreover,nocomparison betweenthetwoclassesofbooks.The Bibleoccasionallydescribesscenesof evil,butdoesnotapproveorcondone evil.

"TOTHISPUREALLTHINGSARE PURL"

(7)Perhapsthemostcynicaland hypocriticalofallthereasonsurged againstthebanningofthebookwas theplea:"tothepureallthingsare pure." InhisEpistletoTitus,Bishopof Crete,St.Paulwrote:

"Allthingsarecleantotheclean; buttothemthataredefiledandtounbelievers,nothingisclean;boththeir mindandtheirconsciencearedefiled."

Furthermore, ifthewordsmeant thatforthosewhoarepurethereisno suchthingasimpurity, thenitwould followthatGodwhoisPurityitself, wouldbeunabletoforbidorcondemn theviceofimpurity.

WhatSt.Paulmeantteasthis:All thingscreatedbyGodaregoodin themselves.Thosewholeadgood liveswillneverbecontaminatedbya createdthing,fortheywilluseitasit shouldbeusedinaccordancewiththe lawofGod.Ontheotherhand,those whohavecorruptedtheirownsoulsby infidelityandtheviolationofGod's lawwillpervertanddefileeverything theytouch, Yet,withastupidityoradishonesty whichleaveonespeechless,somepeopledistortthemeaningoftheApostles'wordstojustifyallsortsofmoral perversion.
